Book Description

Vicksburg, Mississippi's own Beatrice Bush is on the cusp of becoming the first woman to create a multi-million dollar day spa empire, with the moral support of two other Colored grits-Anna from Hunter, Alabama and Susie from Doolittle, Georgia. Unfortunately, the moment the deal is set to close, her ex-husband resurfaces and does everything in his power to cash in. As if his greed and insanity isn¿t enough, her daughter Lauren, calls with what might be good news for some, but is drastic news for Beatrice. Why can't a woman rake in a cool twenty million, fall in love, and make her mark in history in peace? As the clock winds down, everything happens at once: her best friends suddenly have their own personal challenges to overcome; a vicious court battle wages in the background forcing Beatrice to remain in Chicago instead making the much needed trip to New York to deal with Lauren. All three women have handled the worst life has served up before. Their stories span from the time when Coloreds could not be served in public venues, to when Negroes began the civil rights movement, then when Blacks made a militant impact on politics, economics, hair, and fashion; and ending with the changes the three must make as modern African-American women. Can Anna and Susie shake off the deep-rooted Southern-belle, honor, obey and stand by your man tradition to find the happiness and success they deserve? Will Beatrice succeed in closing the deal of a lifetime only to lose her daughter in the process?

3 out of 5 stars Good Home Training.......2004-10-10

This is a story about three women and long time friends, Colored G.R.I.T.S. (African-American Girls Raised in the South), Beatrice, Anna, and Susie. Years after divorcing her emotionally unstable ex-husband, Beatrice is still fighting him for her independence. She is in the process of closing a major business deal that will allow her to franchise her very successful day spa, but entrenched in a legal battle with her ex who wants a piece of the pie even though he has done nothing to deserve it. Anna and Susie are anxiously awaiting the news of the impending deal and preparing to celebrate their dear friend's success. As the story progresses each of the three women reflect over their lives, revisiting moments from their childhood, college life, and young adult life. Through these reflections it soon becomes clear that they have encountered and overcome a great deal of pain, sometimes in spite of and other times because of their good southern upbringing and through the support of their good friends.

The pains, joys, successes, and failures the three women experience and share are what really carry this book. Though Beatrice is the main character, I found myself much more intrigued by some of the secondary cast, particularly Anna. COLORED GRITS lacks positive male characters, and the men that are highlighted are unfaithful and particularly unappealing. I found this to be a weakness and would have preferred at least one positive African American male character to balance the strong women that were profiled. The focus on the impending business deal lacked the tension to give the ending a powerful punch and at times this element of the plot made the story drag. The biggest strength of the book is the superb development of Beatrice and Anna's characters; I understood how their pasts shaped the women they became and felt as if I knew them personally. I was inspired by their strength and felt they taught the lesson that no matter how old you are or how many bumps you've had in your path; it is never too late to reinvent yourself and realize your potential.

I don't know what happened to this author and why he stopped writing but this whole series was great. This series has a lot of action and intrigue. I thought the plot was well thought out. I hope he writes something new.

What can I tell you? Read this guy! I don't know what he's doing or where he is now, but the series is more than worth it. If you like Douglas Adams, Robert Rankin, Roger Zelazny, Greg Costikyan - well, you'll love Mr. Brenner.

Only two issues of Tad Williams's popular TechnoComics Mirror World series were ever printed--issues 0 and 1. Mirror World laid down an imaginative alternate history for Earth worthy of such an unpredictable and original author: Just before the turn of the millennium, giant mirrors sprang up all over the world, and an army of super-sized insects poured out, capturing countless thousands and dragging them back through the mirrors into the unknown. The mirrors stuck around, and eventually some humans made the (one-way, they realized later) trip to the other side, to an Earth-like--and mysteriously superbug-less--parallel dimension. A number of these intrepid souls were souped-up "biotroopers," sent by the UN in pursuit of the giant bugs. These biotroopers were the focus of Mirror World, and they also provide the common thread in this release.

Strangely, Williams didn't write any of the three stories in the richly illustrated Tad Williams' Mirror World. While he did hand-pick the book's authors, none is quite the equal of the talented and creative Williams. The writers clearly understand and appreciate Williams's world, though, and while not entirely polished, their efforts show enthusiasm and innovation. This book would definitely be at home on the bookshelf of any Mirror World fan, with dozens of illustrations and computer-readout-style dossiers on notable biotroopers. --Paul Hughes

            Book Description

It is June of 1999 and a strange phenomenon has suddenly appeared throughout the world's major cities: giant mirrors which split the cities in half. Dividing natural parkways and cutting buildings in two, these mirrors, are as dangerous as they are beautiful. For soon after it is discovered that people can step through them and enter foreign worlds, it becomes clear that a trip through the Earth's Mirrors is a one-way journey. The mirrors work in only one direction. What started out as a curious odyssey becomes a permanent exile.

Yet despite the imminent threat of banishment, people still cross over the bridge of Mirrors - some to find loved ones stranded on the other side, some to challenge new frontiers, and some to reverse the horrors of what is swarming through the Mirrors to challenge the course of civilization.

For, back on Earth, huge predatory insects are pouring through the Mirrors, killing or carrying away anything living in their path. The Bugs, as they become known, are a deadly plague with which the world I forced to reckon. A plague which both challenges and fuels the Earth's relationship with the Mirrors, as organizations such as the United Nations become involved, symbolizing the harmonious response of the world's nations and many peoples.

The story of the mirrors is revealed through the eyes of Dancer, hero of Mirror World. Thoughtful and brave, Dancer passionately explores the fantastic worlds of the unknown. As he travels through newly established territories such as the city states of Shades and Looking Glass and the downtrodden land of Darklea, we see that the mirrors have created not only an alien civilization but also a new world built upon a the future of hope, love, and a prism of dreams.

              5 out of 5 stars Good Go-To Book.......2006-01-08

Another addition to my family's survival library, this scholarly work will be a great reference when it comes to the field of "mixology." I anticipate the section on "memorable theme parties" will offer some great ideas for little pick-me-up moments in what will probably be a very wasteland-like existance when our precariously balanced civilization finally collapses all around us. This book has also helped me choose which ingredients to stock up on. Nice section on garnishes, too.

5 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Cocktails Book.......2005-11-26

This book has it all. The most informative and amusing twist on old style drink recipe books. Holly Rapport has a wonderful way of presenting the facts with flair.

A wonderful book to give and receive during the holiday season.

I give this book 1 star because I think the author had good intentions. However, instead of relieving any grief over the loss of my beloved friend, this book pushed my buttons and I became very, very upset. Hopefully you will read all these reviews before purchasing this book which is what I mistakenly did not do. As a scientist who believes in divine intervention as this planet has evolved, I felt like I was being insulted over and over as the author defended his belief in creationism and passive-aggressively ridiculed other beliefs. He insists that this book is appropriate for people of all faiths, however it is only appropriate for people who believe in creationism and accept literal interpretations from the Bible as reassurance that are pets are OK. Why does this discussion need to be in a book about pet loss? I suggest reading Animals and the Afterlife by Kim Sheridan if you are looking for comfort in other people's experiences. It is much, much more inclusive and has brought me great relief.

5 out of 5 stars Relief for a Broken Heart.......2007-09-16

This book really helped me to find some peace after the loss of my 11 year old yellow lab that I have had since 7th grade. I feel totally at peace that he is in heaven and I will see him again one day. "Cold Noses" had a lot of scripture and heart warming stories that really made me feel better.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source of comfort........2007-09-09

Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates was a great help to my wife and I when dealing with the loss of our little dog Lucy. It's comforting to know that we won't be separated forever.

2 out of 5 stars Great Premise, Poorly Written.......2007-08-03

Having suffered the sudden and devastating loss of a treasured furbaby, along with being currently the guardian of 3 more seniors, I agree with and think the main premise of this book is great. The actual book itself, however, is very poorly written. Instead of just getting to the topic at hand, the author goes on and on ad nauseum about his beliefs, views, stories and thought trains that have no connection to the book's purpose and then spends what seems like forever apologizing for what he has written. There were SO many apologies, in fact, that it made me feel like the author himself was uncomfortable with his work. He went off on tangents all over the place, offered only the smallest handful of scripture references to support his theories and just seemed like he was all over the place. There seemed to be very little actual material addressed to the topic at hand.

The author seems to be a very kind individual with the genuine desire to do for others, so I hate to be negative, but throughout the entire book I kept thinking "Where's the REAL subject matter? The reason I'm sitting here reading this?" The books is a very easy read, I read the whole thing in one evening, but I'm glad I got it from the library and didn't pay for it.

5 out of 5 stars Every Pet Owner Should Read this Book.......2007-07-11

This is a beautifully written book from a Christian perspective about our beloved pets and that they do indeed go to heaven. Even I was somewhat skeptical about our pets going to heaven. The author really did his homework researching the information about pets going to heaven. This book is a definite must read for anyone who loves animals and has ever grieved over the loss of their pet. This book will change your outlook on life. The author explains how the sin of mankind not only affected mankind but the animals as well. You simply have to read this book!!

This one's a handsome winner. I can't believe how many pages it is, because this is a very portable book, with that very thin yet strong paper found in some Bibles, and the covers are hard, yet thin enough to be flexible, so the whole book could gently bend. Still has a red ribbon to mark the place, though it has detached from the book! The pages aren't square cut at edges, but rounded, which is more expensive for publishers. The maps are rather beautiful, and a must for antique cartographers. I think this book covers every conceivable attraction, town, and sightseeing interest. Popular places in 1908, of course! Great deal, recommended. Gold leaf lettering on spine. 573 pages plus 43 maps and 25 pages of amazing attractive advertising, both historically important and appealing!

3 out of 5 stars Common cards from the Commonwealth.......2007-10-10

After a shorting introduction of post card history, 400-500 postcards are presented in black and white, and 22 in color. The cards, from 1900-1950, are arranged alphabetically, and dates for the individual cards are not included. The message on the card is not included, and a brief description is included for about a fourth of the cards (for example in showing a flood, there should have been a caption that this was the 1937 Louisville flood). Still there are some nice cards here, particularly when depicting people; such as; "Wash day at Camp Zachary Taylor", "Making Burgo in Old Kentucky", and several unlabelled real photo postcards.

5 out of 5 stars "Feng Shui - Its not just about hanging bells and crystals.".......2001-08-23

I have been trying to read up all that I can about feng shui in the last few days. And I thaught I knew pretty much until this wonderful book by Lillian Too happened to me. It gives you a compleate picture of how Feng Shui works. I realise now that its not just about hanging bells and crystals around the house. It gives a clear description of the importance of the different directions and why we ought to go by them. The paramount importance of the Kua number is also very well done. I defenetly didnt expect this much from the book. I initially bought it for my own personal use but I guess with this kind of knowledge I could even start practicing Feng Shui. Its a great book to learn from.

Neither significantly knew even a single African American person while growing up. Now, a child will change all of that forever. In this fateful moment, a Black baby becomes perhaps the first in the history of New Mexico to be adopted by a White family. Here is a brazenly honest glimpse into the mind and heart of that child, a true story for the ages that flows like a soulful river—separated from his mother at birth, placed into foster care, adopted, and finally reunited with his biological family in adulthood—an astounding journey of personal discovery. Jaiya John has opened the floodgates on his own childhood with this piercing memoir. Black Baby White Hands, a waterfall of jazz splashing over the rocks of love, pain and the honoring of family. Magically, this book finds a way to sing as it cries, and to exude compassion even as it dispels well-entrenched myths. This story is sure to find itself well worn, stained by tears, and brushed by laughter in the lap of parents, adolescents, educators, students and professionals. Here comes the rain and the sunshine, all at once.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written.......2007-10-08

Jaiya John shows immense courage as he gives the early details of his life's journey. His sensitivity and honesty triumph as he describes childhood illusion, confusion, and isolation. The way he tells his story, anyone can easily understand and relate to, regardless of background. The poetry throughout is brilliant. I read this book hoping to learn about the perspective of adopted children and children in foster care; I gained the perspective and insight I was seeking, but received much more in the reading of this memoir. I am grateful for the opportunity, and encourage others to experience this compelling story.

5 out of 5 stars Raw but true and helpful as an adoptive parent.......2007-09-03

As the white mother of 2 black boys and a white biological son, I found this book to be extremely powerful and educational. I use it as a reference - I go back to it as they grow and change and I learn more about myself as a mother. I am called to be deeply honest about my own thoughts and feelings while trying to honor and respect the unique experiences of all my sons - from their perspectives. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering adoption - of any kind, but particularly transracial adoption.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing view.......2007-07-23

this is going to be a very valuable tool for tranracially parernted or adopted children.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Eye Opening.......2007-01-15

I am now a White mother of a Black baby and I have learned more than I bargained for. I did expect a "how to book" but instead was blessed with this memoir. I bought the book in hopes of learning how to help my my baby to grow to be the best Black man he can be. During this book, I felt as though this could be the story of ANY adopted child OR any Black child not necessarily even both.

5 out of 5 stars This Truth Can Not Be Denied By White Parents.......2007-01-05

As a white sister of an African American boy adopted in 1970,a mother of two Ethiopian children and a soical woker creating multiracially families I have to say this is the most true, painful and amazing book I have read. I painfully made my way through the book for the first time truly understanding the depth of my brother's experience. Wanting to deny what Jaiya was sharing but knowing he was right. Remembering too many painful moments for my brother. However, celebrating the progress we have made and the changes I have made as a mother of black children but also agonizing over the changes we have not made.... It is now required reading for all of my families wanting to adopt across the racial lines.
