    Book Description

Welcome to Klail City, in Belken County, along the Mexico border in Texas' Rio Grande Valley. In the weeks leading up to the Democratic primary, Jehu Malacara chronicles the political rabble-rousing of Klail City's wealthiest citizens in letters to his cousin Rafe Buenrostro. Led by Arnold "Noddy" Perkins, the who's who of Belken County create a complex web of relationships. Wrangling bank loans, club memberships, and local politics, Perkins dominates the political and economic landscape of the community.

When Malacara turns up missing, and the writer, P. Galindo, begins interviewing the citizens, tales of deceit and betrayal float to the surface. From Jehu's knockout girlfriend Ollie to up-and-coming socialite Becky Escobar and even to old man Perkins himself, Hinojosa offers a feast of quirky characters and misdeeds.

Part epistolary, part mystery novel, the population of Klail City makes an indelible impression. With an introduction by Hinojosa scholar Manuel Martín-Rodríguez, a professor at University of California - Merced, this volume combines for the first time the English and Spanish-language versions of the novel that creates a fictitious community that The New York Times compared to Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha and Marquez's Macondo.

    Book Description

Exalted: Beloved of the Dead (Trilogy of the Second Age)

The warrior Dace and his young charge, Yushuv, were already on the run from the inquisitors and huntsmen of the Realm. Now, in the wilds of the Scavenger Lands, they face an ageless, relentless enemy with only the Unconquered Sun to help them.

In more dire straits still, the priest Eliezer Wren braves the Underworld itself to escape the Prince of Shadows. But dark powers await him there, determined to bend him to their will-or break him if he refuses.

5 out of 5 stars Winding Spirals grow to Epic Proportions.......2002-11-19

As the trilogy of the second age by richard dansky continues, the story becomes even more epic. Worry not if your not familiar with the RPG world "exalted" which this is to occur in, for I know nothing about it and yet still loved and comprehended this book with ease and little time.

As I mentioned, the story grows mre epic as yushev, the young boy in the first book, is assisted by a warrior of the unconquered sun while in flee form the elvish fey; Wren is flung into darkness where dead gods rule; ratcatcher travels in a decaying manner; and more. If you loved the first book, this one is even more amazing as the world seems bound in conflict.

I have also written a review for the first book, chosen of the sun, be sure to read it if you havn't already purchased/read chosen of the sun.

2 out of 5 stars This is not a softcover edition of Exalted.......2002-05-31

This is not a softcover edition of Exalted. This is a novel set
in the same universe as the RPG Exalted. The main rule-book
for Exalted is currently availble in two hardcover editions, the Limited and the Unlimited.

The Unlimited is the only edition currently available on Amazon; I believe the Limited is out of print.

This book should not be listed as a "softcover edition" of Exalted, but as an independent title.

Barbecue is not about grilling food fast over high heat. That's something else, delicious in its own right, but something else entirely. Barbecue is about marginal cuts of meat (for the most part), about smoke, about fires burning so low and slow you hardly ever see the flicker of a flame. Barbecue is about succulent pork ribs as dark as sin just falling off the bone and dripping with glorious sweet pork godliness. Or enjoying the effects that 12 to 18 hours of smoking has on beef brisket.

The trick is, how do you do it? How do you master a cooking technique all but ignored in favor of fast and hot? The answer lies in Smoke & Spice. Authors Jamison and Jamison provide all the information you're ever going to need to run a real barbecue. Tips and techniques abound on every page--accompanied with countless recipes that stretch the barbecue imagination. And seeing that one cannot live on barbecue alone (though that's a challenge well worth considering) there are just as many recipes included for all the good food that accompanies barbecue--from Scalloped Green Chile Potatoes to South-of-the-Border Garlic Soup to Buttermilk Onion Rings and even Bourbon Peaches. If smoke in your eyes makes your mouth water, this is the primer for you! --Schuyler Ingle

This is a great book on smoking. It has great tips and recipes. Highly recommended for new and existing cooks who want to use smokers. We tried getting this type of information online and it just takes to long and the information is incomplete. This book fills in the gaps and doesn't leave you wondering.

A lot of recipes and very detailed information. A must have!!!
My only suggestion would be to dedicate a whole chapter to setting up the fire. There is no info about it in the book.
I think any barbecue book is incomplete without helping the user setup and maintain the temperature. I mean, this is not an oven where you can set it and forget it. Maintaining 200F in a smoker is a talent I think.

                        Praise for Second-Hand Dog

"At long last, the book all animal shelters have been waiting for is here: Carol Lea Benjamin's Second-Hand Dog." —Sue Sternberg ASPCA Report

"...goes right to the heart of what it's all about..." —Barbara Dyer, Director Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter

"Benjamin writes with love and sensitivity about caring for pets 'adopted' from a shelter." —Publishers Weekly

"...a solid training program...a great book." —Job Michael Evans, Dog Fancy

"Why a book like this has never before been written is beyond me. It is an invaluable guide to rehabilitating those myriad unfortunate dogs which have either never had a home or have been shuttled from one owner to another, losing confidence, trust and self-esteem every step of the way. It is an absolute must for every owner who wants his second-hand dog to regain the ability to become the warm, loving companion every dog should be." —Kenneth A. Marden President, The American Kennel Club

"...Carol Lea Benjamin has written a witty, sound and thoroughly appropriate book on the extraordinary advantages that each of us who has second-hand pets knows first-hand. If you're thinking about sharing your life with a pet or with another pet, read this book first!" —John F. Kullberg President ASPCA

5 out of 5 stars Good read for training your rescued dog.......2007-07-03

This book is fun, easy to read, and has many practical tips and ideas for integrating a rescued dog into your home. I work with rescued dogs and offer this book to new adopters when they pick up their new best friend.
Carol Lea Benjamin has written several dog training books, which offer dog owners lots of training advice.
                        Great book, great ideas!

1 out of 5 stars Not About Rescued/Adopted Dogs!!! .......2007-05-12

This book was so disappointing! I bought it after we got an adult dog from a shelter who had some serious behavior problems. But this book was completely useless!

It isn't about rescued or adopted dogs or how to help them. It is a VERY basic training guide [and I do mean *very* basic]. It is only 93 pages long and at least 30% of those pages are just hand drawn cartoons or stark black and white photos that are irrelevant to the text. I read the whole thing in less than 1 hour [an hour that I wasted unfortunately :( ].

There was *nothing* specifically about training or working with second hand dogs and the special problems/challenges and rewards you face.

The training advice is pretty bad too. First, it is very basic. Second, it is very negative and punative - most "modern" trainers would not advocate or approve of her methods. Third, some of the advice is just plain dangerous. [For example, her advice on how to deal with a dog who is growling is actually contra-indicated by every other resource I've read - her advice will actually teach the dog to *bite* first instead of giving the warning growl. Many of the techniques she recommends would be especially inappropriate for a rescue/shelter dog who faces special challenges in getting past aggression and/or fear because of their history.

Do yourself a favor and skip this book - there are many better books on both dog behavior and dog training. This book is a waste of your time.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Book.......2007-03-14

This book is dangerous and filled very bad, dangerous advice. It was written in 1998, so giving the benefit of the doubt, perhaps our thinking about homing a rescue dog has evolved, but this book is extremely outdated. It recommends using the dog's crate as a place for punishment -which we all know is wrong. It further recommends "pops" with the leash to jerk your dog into obedience and "staring down" a dog into submission -again, outdated, inappropriate concepts. It is a very high level, superficial, quick read riddled with inappropriate advice that certainly does not speak to how one goes about brining a new, most likely scared, rescue dog into your home.

1 out of 5 stars Please don't waste your money.......2007-01-08

I was recommended this book as I adopted a dog. I've had dogs, but never an adult rescue dog. I thought it would give me advice on dealing with issues specific to an adult rescue dog, solutions to problems I may encounter, what to expect, etc. What I got was a sappy "be patient and love your dog" summary. Any advice in the book was extremely basic and common sense, especially if you've owned any dog before. Yes, we need to understand and train our second hand dog, but this book provides NONE of the "how". I thought it was a complete waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Second Hand Dog.......2005-09-18

I read this book before adopting my first Weimaraner; 4 years later I volunteer as a foster for Weimaraner Rescue and I've re-read it several times. After reading many other training books over the years, I've found Carol Lea Benjamin's dog-training books to be the best in their class.

Our rescue gives Second Hand Dog to each new adopter. I also highly recommend Dog Training in 10 Minutes. Both books provide invaluable information--in an entertaining and informative format--as an easy to read, easy to implement way to acclimate & train a new dog in the household.

All of Ms. Benjamin's books give newbie & experienced dog owners insight to canine behavior as well as provide the vehicle to make your dog "the dog you've always wanted." She emphasizes consistency and humane training that's enjoyable to both owner & dog.

Carol Lea Benjamin's dog-training books should be a must-read for every new dog owner!

                            Book Description

This book is a 476-page survey of furniture craftsmen working in Chester County, Pennsylvania from its founding in 1682 to 1850 when there was a recognized decline in the handicraft tradition. The settlers included predominently English Quakers for the first half century, after which numbers of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, Welsh Baptists, Irish Quakers, and Germans became equally important and, later, had major influence in the county. The hand made furniture from the county has certain distinguishing features which are explained in the well-researched text, and illustrated in 175 photographs. Hundreds of cabinetmakers and other craftsmen are profiled in detail from their contemporary public records. The work is an important reference for furniture and social historians alike.

This book's title describes exactly what you'll find inside: graphed sayings with VERY little embelishment or cross stitch accents (there are some). The best project in the whole book is the Mom design pictured on the front cover. Some of the graphed "sayings" in this book consist soley of one word, such as "Love", "Peace", or "Tranquility". I was disappointed in this book mainly because I was expecting something more from the designs. However, the title does say "Little Sayings" and that is exactly what you get and very little else.

                            5 out of 5 stars enchanted.......2001-01-24

What a wonderful, whimsical, nostalgic, delightful book. Of all the cross sticth books there are out there this one certainly tops them all. This book is filled with heartwarming sayings that are appropiate for all occasions like mother's day, father's day, birthdays, friendships, and just about any other occasion you could think about. In other cross stitch books the designs are just averavge, but in this one, they are so beautiful. The only downside is that the book is too crammed. The designs should have been spaced out more to provide a better view of all the crafts. Beginners and veterans of cross stitching would find this book a definite keeper.

                            Book Description

This commentary expands Johannine studies in two directions. First, drawing on the methods of literary criticism, it gives new force to a view which is both ancient and modern--that John's gospel, far from being a poorly-edited mixture of sometimes-conflicting traditions, is in fact a coherent unity, an account of Jesus which, however diverse its sources, is a finely-chiselled work of art. Second, it indicates that the unity of John's gospel is founded ultimately not on history or theology but on spirituality. This too corresponds to a view which is both very old--John was always known as the spiritual gospel--and very recent. The present study spells out that idea in new detail. It indicates that the account of Jesus is so written that the tensions and complexities of the text reflect the tensions and complexities of human life, providing the reader not only with an account of Jesus but also with an anthropology--a map of the development of the human spirit.

Thomas L. Brodie gives the reader a very stimulating read of John's text. As a pastor who is preaching through the fourth Gospel, I have found Brodie's insights very helpful at times. I also appreciate his helpful summaries of other leading commentaries (e.g., Brown, Schnackenburg, Barrett, Lindars, etc.). There are times when reading this work where you feel as though the author is stetching things a bit too far in order to make a connection, but I would rather have this than the frustration that would come with a writer who never takes a risk.

My advise is to use this in conjunction with another commentary whose primary focus will be exegesis and history. But much will be lost if not consulted.

                            5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Mid-Level Commentary.......2004-12-20

Brodie's work is an undervalued gem in the trinket-heavy pawn shop of Johannine studies. With most critical commentaries, you either sacrifice ingenuity or orthodoxy; Brodie's work survives with both intact. Not that I agree with all of his conclusions -- but where we differ I can still respect and appreciate his positions. I learned to rely heavily on his commentary in my own current research. Recommended for those who want a more critical introduction to the FG and something beyond the typical (e.g., Brown, Schnack, Carson, and Bultmann).

2 out of 5 stars The heavy use of symbolism undermines his study of the text........1998-12-11

The strongest point of Brodie's commentary is his literary approach which has greatly helped him to organize his work. However, after admitting in his introduction that the theological method of study tended to lend itself to the use of arbitrary symbolism, Mr. Brodie does not seem to make any attempt to curb his use of symbolism as he treats the text of the Gospel of John. This results in his reading into the text elements which are not present instead of trying to dig into the real meaning of the text.

I have not read this book, however, I felt that there needed to be some clarification. I do not know the heart of Mr. Disney, but I do know that he grew up the son of a part-time preacher. His father, a carpenter, was a Christian who would, at times, preach at church. Mr. Disney also used to take his daughters to Sunday school when they were young. And finally, he had Disneyland blessed by both Christian and Jewish ministers on opening day. I am not saying that he was a Christian, though he could have recieved Christ as his Savior when he was younger. But he was open to the Bible and I believe put biblical morality into his works.

3 out of 5 stars The irony is that Disney was not a Christian...........2004-04-26

The irony of this book is that the author, and the readers, have completely misinterpreted the intentions of Walt Disney. Disney entertainment was never intended to "promote the ideas of Jesus Christ" it was intended to present an alternative to the Bible as a source of morality.

Disney used pagan imagery and stories to present stories of moral guidance that of course have much in common with stories in the Bible because the they are parables used to teach a moral lesson.

So, I just find it ironic, that Walt Disney, who was not a Christian and who intended to present an alternative to Christian based morality by providing non-Christian moral stories, is being hailed as a promoter of the Gospels. His whole point was to show that Chrisitians don't have a monopoly on morality.

4 out of 5 stars Lessons in Life: The Gospel According to Disney.......2000-07-27

In his letter to the Galatians, St. Paul decreed a particularly ugly fate for males who proclaimed any gospel, other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Rev. Anderson need not worry about that punishment. In fact, the title of his book is a bit deceptive: This is not "The Gospel According to Disney," nor is it a theological treatise of any sort. Rather, it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as seen in bits and pieces, through the work of Walt Disney, et al. In each of the 20 short chapters, Anderson lays out a sermon illustration, Sunday School or Vacation Bible School lesson, as seen in one of Disney's films or leading characters. The book is amusing, engaging, and restates the unchanging Gospel of Jesus Christ in a fresh way that is easily grasped by a modern audience. If there is any short fall to this valuable little book it is that the book can be a bit short on divine grace, and very long on perfectionism at some points. Ironically, sometimes (despite the title) rather than appealing to the Gospel, Anderson appeals to the Law. ...but a book that includes maxims, morals and ethical teachings is still a valuable text. Especially, when paired with opportunities to view the original films, this book can be a wonderful teaching tool for parents, Sunday School teachers, Vacation Bible School teachers, divinity students and clergy.

The Gospel According to Disney provides a wonderful, authoritative starting point for parents to teach their children Christian morals and values. In each chapter, Rev. Anderson skillfully points out the parallels between the early Disney animated classic movies and the important lessons of Christianity. Included at the end of each chapter are study questions which nicely serve to stimulate and facilitate family discussions. Using the Disney movies, beloved by all children, Rev. Anderson has provided parents with an easy, relevant means to make important Christian teachings a part of their childrens' everyday lives. Thank you, Mr. Disney, for making the beautiful animated classics, and thank you, Rev. Anderson, for showing us their important religious significance!

Rev. Anderson skillfully enlightens the reader to a higher level of Disney animated classics. He lifts up scripture from the Bible and shows the reader how its lessons live on in numerous Disney animated films, created during Walt Disney's lifetime. If Walt were alive, I believe he would highly approve of Rev. Anderson's insights. Exploring Christian values by comparing them to popular stories is a creative and fun way to get the entire family to study and learn from the Bible. Each chapter is a sermon for modern times; his insights are shared with humor, touching stories and wisdom. Rev. Anderson even includes study questions for adults (children of all ages) to continue their learning, on their own time. This book is a treasure for the whole family, a valuable companion to the Bible and represents a scholarly view into the world of animated art.

With the significantly increased popularity of fantasy films, TV, and books in recent years, the work of fantasy artists is in demand as never before. This art instruction manual, written by a noted fantasy artist, coaches students in methods of portraying convincing fantasy figures in all media—pencil, watercolor, acrylics, oils, and computer-generated pixel points. Following a discussion of needed tools and equipment, the author instructs on techniques for drawing convincing fantasy characters and their worlds, with attention to their faces, bodies, action, and costume styles. He advises on the creation of heroes and heroines, villains and wizards, dragons and man-like beasts. Separate chapters deal with different art media, and a final section on computer art covers everything from the basic desktop setup to methods of creating special effects. This beautifully produced book features more than 250 instructive, vividly-colored illustrations.

Although R. Crumb's "Want to improve your art? DRAW. Wishing won't make it happen!" is the best "How-To" advice anyone can give/get, books like this are still quite helpful and inspirational. I bought this book, ended up loaning it to a friend also interested in it during an OT period at work. Later, I just bought another copy for myself!!! It is that good.

5 out of 5 stars An amazingly helpful book for fantasy artists!.......2006-02-08

I've been drawing for over seven years. This book is helping me considerably.

Cowan gives a good emphasis on the fantasy genre. Before, I knew nothing of how to draw armor or if I was drawing the female and male anatomy correctly or if my drawings even could be considered fantasy.

In the beginning of the book, he explores the different ways you can receive inspiration (scrapbooking, mementoes, museums, art books, et cetera) and different helpful tools. He also explains opportunities that fantasy artists can receive (work in film, games, et cetera).

In the drawing portion of the book, he focuses on the basics: faces, expressions, bodies/anatomy; and helpful intermediate things: archetypes, foreshortening. Throughout the book are drawings and paintings (both digital and traditional) that give both inspiration and help considerably. There is also the topic of wizards and mythical creatures (dragons, gryphons, et cetera) and non-mytical (horses and owls...).

The back of the book deals with painting and inking as well as digital art (3D and Photoshop).

This book is very helpful. The only flaw I see is that it doesn't go into too much depth. I only wish that he went into more depth with the costumes. Otherwise, everything else was fine!

This is two books for the price of one!
(When I was in the bookstore, I couldn't decide on a book on to get. I had two in my hand - together it would have been over $50.00. Then I saw this book that covered everything I wanted: dragons and fantasy themes. So, I don't agree with "A Classicist"'s review about it being two books.) I find this book perfect!

2 out of 5 stars Not useful for drawing instruction.......2005-12-30

While a few helpful tips are included, this book is concerned primarily with listing various characters and props in the fantasy genre and showcasing the artist's work. If you are looking for guidance in drawing the characters or props, this is not the book for you. If you are unaware that the fantasy genre includes warriors, elves, and wizards, then look no further.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book (in a lonely field).......2004-01-06

There aren't very many illustration books out there that deal with drawing from the imagination. Most are concerned only with drawing from nature, from a model, still life, etc. There's the Encyclopedia of Fantasy Art, of course, but that is more of a collection of examples, and not much of a learning resource. And there are a few well-known comic book titles, but they are mostly dated and directed at the pre-teen crowd.

Cowan's book, however, fills this gap nicely. It has a great look and is very informative. The only reason it doesn't get the full 5 stars is because it tries to cover too much material. Two books -- one on drawing and one on painting -- would have been much better, as it would have allowed more detailed coverage of both topics.

All in all, though, highly recommended.

Both professional and student illustrators of action and fantasy art can take the guesswork out of rendering extreme anatomy and dynamic action poses with help from this valuable reference source. It presents more than 600 detailed color photos of live models, and represents a wide range of physiques, postures, and poses that can be incorporated in fantasy scenarios. The book's accompanying CD-ROM contains all of the book's posed images, allowing illustrators to swipe them directly and paste them into their own computer art projects. The book also instructs on rendering realistic effects to the illustrated textures of flesh, hair, clothing, and metal objects, as well as advice on adding highlights, backlights, and shadows. Here is a valuable reference source that belongs in every illustrator's personal library. All images are copyright free.

I really enjoyed this book. I actually downloaded the images onto my computer and use them as poses to draw from in the slide show format. Coupled with "The Natural Way to draw" this book really helps me out and gives me a "safe" place to learn away from the limelight, which is important to me.

This images are good and very well done and give you some really good costume studies (as well as drapery studies) on top of basic anatomy and muscle drawing.

Overall, a very good piece of work.

                                            3 out of 5 stars my review.......2007-07-04

This book is a welcome addition to any cartoonist or illustrator's photo reference file as it includes physical and ethnical types different from the usual stereotypical idealized caucasians. On the other hand, it isn't as systematic, varied or consistent in its poses and points-of-view as the Illustrator's Reference Manuals or the Posefile series of books.

                                            2 out of 5 stars Cliche Central.......2007-01-23

The 'Fantasy' of the title is, unfortunately, the heavily-stereotyped 'thud and blunder' style fantasy of Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser and other such hackneyed, outdated types.

The figures shown are Barbarian warrior, Warrior woman, Evil Sorceress, Fairy, etc. And they are all quite absurd.

The book also includes little tidbits of information about costume and weapons, like this pearl of wisdom: "The nock is the part of the bow that the arrow rests on." Uh, yeah?

Combine this with poses titled "Bring forth tidings", "Arise, my liege" and the like, you soon realise this isn't a particularly well-done piece of work.

As for the CD, the images are huge - making them very difficult to work with.

This book isn't completely useless, but there are surely better things to spend your money on.

If you are new to the fantasy art genre or are looking for a great quick reference for figure drawing, this is the book. It gives a diverse selection of different body types, sizes and looks, as well as a good smattering of accesories, close-ups and clothing...

3 out of 5 stars Not extreme or dynamic, but still has some good parts.......2007-01-03

Unfortunately, this book did not live up to my expectations. Overall, it was uninspiring to me, especially in creating my own characters. As a reference photo book, it fails because the poses are not extreme and dynamic as promised. It also seems to try to reach beyond its scope with a section on painting and many comments on characters beyond anatomy and costume.

                                            Pros:
                                            - "Anatomical studies" show each character type in only shorts (or shorts and sports bra for women) so you know what the body looks like in some poses.
                                            - Summary of character wardrobe
                                            - Poses of characters in wardrobe may help in drawing clothing -- depicting folds, how certain material hangs, etc.
                                            - As another review mentioned, an overweight man ("cleric" and "norseman" types) and a small person ("warrior dwarf" type) are shown here, and both are helpful.
                                            - Captions in the book often direct you to details (how material is bunching up a certain way, how a shoulder strap hangs off the body in a certain pose) or notes about anatomy ("legs need to be placed apart because they will have to bend to compensate for the weight of the ax")
                                            - Section of close-up facial expressions (male and female)
                                            - Although brief, there are also some photos of hand detail, including props like rings & bracelets, and accessory details -- boots, belts, jewelry
                                            - Spiral binding allows the book to lay flat (although when you're drawing, you'll probably print images from the CD instead)

                                            Cons:
                                            - Uninteresting poses. This is the sale-killer for me. Although the book says the photos depict "extreme anatomy and dynamic action poses" I found the poses to be too plain. There was no "extreme" posing where the body is in extreme angles -- lunging, jumping, twisting. Instead, someone is standing still with their arms raised and feet spread, but there is no action happening. You can tell because there is a lack of tense muscles.

                                            - The back of the book has a section on painting characters that seems out of place. This is a photo reference book, not a painting book. Unless you already know about painting with acrylics, this section is useless.

                                            - Some captions have irrelevant comments. In a caption of a photo showing a happy "warrior prince" face, it notes, "All characters should be able to feel elation and happiness."

Summary: although a few poses are good, don't expect most of them to be "extreme" or "dynamic." Note that this is not an instruction book on learning anatomy, and you should have at least a basic understanding of human anatomy to use this book well.

Books that I would recommend for beginning artists:

                                            Book Description

From metallic images to superheroes, Julie Bell's illustrations emanate power and sensuality. The term "metal flesh" has been coined to express one of her distinct styles, making it the trademark of her work. A series of exotic fantasy realms come to life with astounding vividness in her paintings, in which the bodies appear to be a melding of cold steel and vulnerable human flesh.

When asked the difference between art and pornagraphy, it is said one just knows. I "just know" that this books crosses the line way too often. I'll be enjoying a piece, eraptured by it's beauty, turn the page and be disgusted as nude characters fornicate on the next page.
I have no problems with nudity in art. In fantasy art nude and nearly nude women (and some times men)are the excepted standard. When done with class and taste, like Amy Brown for example, it ehances the piece not distracts or in some cases disgusts. True art is something I can share with my children, discuss it with them, let it enrich their lives as it enriches mine; rather than hide in it the back of my closet so they don't see it.

This is the 2nd book i got hold after "Hard Curves". Fans of Julie Bell's fantasy art get to keep her prints in a single book. That's luxury! Profusely illustrated and a sure treat for fantasy illustration. Near flawless fantasy art collection in oil captured on prints. Perfect interpretation of human anatomy through her oil painting techniques. Definitely a must for fantasy art collector. One pity is some prints are printing over 2 pages and over time the paperback give way in the saddle and the prints gets torn out. Would have been better if it's a hardbound.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite look at Julie Bell's art!.......1999-08-14

This book combines comments from Julie with a variety of her work from oil paintings to pencil sketches. Especially exciting is seeing some of her trading card art in a larger format. The only problem is the binding. It can be hard to view double page spreads, as part of it is obscured in the binding. This is a great, inexpensive way to get your hands on some of Julie's art.

The day Walter Payton died, Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey tearfully said, "After Brian Piccolo died, my husband Ed and I promised ourselves we wouldn't be so personally involved with any of the players. We were able to follow that resolve until Walter Payton came into our lives." Payton was magical to watch, playing with a toughness that never failed to impress opponents, teammates, and fans alike. Alternately graceful and bruising, Payton ran, leapt, and battered his way to eight NFL records in his 13-year career--including the most rushing yards in a single game (275), most career rushing yards (16,726), and most career total yards (21,803), in addition to having 10 1,000-yard rushing seasons, five 1,500-yard rushing seasons, and 77 100-yard rushing games.

As Sweetness: The Courage and Heart of Walter Payton points out, however, Payton was much more than just a football player. The contributors (many of whom are Chicagoans themselves) certainly highlight Payton's great athletic ability, his impressive stats, and the respect felt for him by his professional colleagues. But they also honor Payton the family man, the practical joker who loved to set off firecrackers in the locker room, and the philanthropist who quietly gave thousands of dollars to charities throughout Illinois. Dozens of photos, quotes from friends and family, and a handful of short essays will help football fans remember a time when life was a little sweeter. A fitting tribute to the man Mike Ditka called "the best football player I've ever seen, and probably one of the best people I've ever met." --Sunny Delaney

Walter Payton was the model of what every player should be like, even in today's "me only" generation. Walter was a first class football player amd first class individual as well.

He is what other players should strive to be like, Walter broke the mold and still stands as the premiere football player of all time. Walter can not and will never be replaced, he represented what all of us should be like no matter what color we are or where we came from or anything!

A truly remarkable individual that went beyond being a great football player, Walter was a great person as well. If a person couldn't be inspired by what Walter Payton represented, they just couldn't be inspired with anything!

I named my son after his son, and my family will never forget watching #34 on the field on Sunday's. Walter is my all time hero and inspiration, and always will be.

                                              5 out of 5 stars A good book about a good man.......2000-07-10

This is a terrific book, especially for parents who want to show their sports-mad kids a real role model. The photos are wonderful, and the text describes the whole man, not just the football player. And he was as good a man as he was player, and there wasn't ever a better player.

Give this to a football-loving kid for Christmas, and try not to cry when you read it yourself.

"Sweetness: The Courage and Heart of Walter Payton" is a wonderful collection of quotes, stats, stories, and pictures illustrating the complete Payton. He was indeed one of the greatest running-backs of all time. What this book gives, that many don't, is a review of Walter's off-field perfomances. He was kind, caring, and loving to all. This book clearly shows that Walter was in all aspects.....a hero. This title is a must for all those who miss the headbands, the dives over the goal lines, the amazing runs, the jumping high fives, and a great man----SWEETNESS!
