    Book Description

    Destined to Die takes place in occupied East Jeruselem, the West Bank, and Lebanon (1979). Nabeel, a student at Bir Zeit University, is arrested on unsubstantiated charges of terrorism. Interrogated and tortured by Major Rosenberg, he is held in solitary confinement for weeks. Released, he decides to go to Lebanon to join the PLO. His devoted girl-friend, Samira--a fellow student--insists on going with him.

    Earlier, Dr. Johnson--the American director of an archaeological institution where Nabeel's father works--attempts to get Nabeel released from prison. Troops storm his offices, everybody is searched, and he is investigated by Major Rosenberg. Accusations and coercions eventually lead to Johnson's downfall from office.

    The scene shifts to war-torn Beirut and, later, to the "security belt" zone in South Lebanon. Nabeel spearheads an attack on an Israeli post and is killed just as he captures it. To avenge his death, Samira undertakes a suicide mission which destroys a landed Israeli commando unit in Beirut about to assassinate two top PLO officials.

    Through its Palestinian, Israeli, and American characters, Destined to Die explores, or touches on, themes such as personal and national identity, racism, terrorism, detention without trial, victimization, loyalty, and self-sacrifice.

    4 out of 5 stars Stewart Does it Again.......2005-03-26

    This book was first published in 1993. I just read it for the first time in 2005. Better late than never! I thought the first book in the series, 'Return to Isis,' was good, but this one is much better. Whit and Kali have convinced the council to let them rebuild Isis. As they start to make this happen, the council appoints three new leaders to ensure their success. Tensions (sexual, power struggles, revenge) build throughout the book until the dam breaks, but I won't hint to the conclusion.

    If you like science fiction and lesbians, you'll like this book. If you don't care for science fiction, you'll still like it. The SF isn't overly done, it just provides a setting for the story. Highly recommended. I'm looking forward to reading the third book, 'Warriors of Isis,' this weekend.

    4 out of 5 stars They're Back!.......2002-03-07

    The women of Freeland are back in a stirring sequel to Jean Stewart's wonderful book, Return To Isis. It is now time to rebuild the devastated city of Isis. Along with a host of new characters, Whit and Kali work to rebuild what was lost. But there is trouble brewing in Freeland as old demons from the past resurface in the budding colony of Isis. From small mishaps to major tragedies things are going wrong and there seems to be no explanation as to why. Whit, Kali, and their friends must solve the mystery if they are ever to build the city of their dreams. It is a struggle right from the start and it just gets worse as time goes on. But amidst all the turmoil the reader is allowed to watch the love between Whit and Kali grow and deepen as the two mature and find their true place in the world. As was the first book, this is a love story posing as a sci-fi novel. All the action takes the focus off the underlying truths about love. As you read this book you will be caught up in the action, you're heartbeat will quicken, but you will have an inexplicable warm and fuzzy feeling deep inside! Jean Stewart combines action and warmth here with such skill and finesse. She is a master of the craft and I, for one, hope she never stops writing!

    4 out of 5 stars transition piece.......2001-10-29

    This book, the sequel to Return to Isis, is not as good as the first, but that could be due to the fact that the characters are already familiar. There's none of the drama of the first book of discovering who these people are, unless you count the villain who shows up in this book and you don't see enough of her to get a feel for her except for pure evil. The third book in the series probably has the excitement as Kali has to deal with the villain and Whit has to deal with that. There is some development of other characters, so this very much has the feel of a transition piece. It seems as if this was a two book idea that got divided into three. The story is interesting though and has the comfort of familiar figures and watching them develop. Like any series, you have to read it to understand where the next one is going.

    3 out of 5 stars Not as Good as First.......2001-01-01

    This is the second in the series set in the far future and featuring Freeland and the city of Isis. After the far-right took over about half the country subsequent to a deadly and particulary virulent virus attacked the citenzry, women established Freeland - mainly in the western part of what had been the US. This is the tale of the rebuilding of Isis after the men of Elysia attacked and destroyed it and the women and children who lived there. All the characters from the first book return as the rebuilding gets under way. But someone is sabotaging their efforts, and things get particularly nasty as the election for the leaders of the city near. I thought the first book in this series was excellent. I wish I could say the same for this one. It lacks the punch of the first book. It's as if the author has mellowed the characters almost to vanilla yogurt. There doesn't seem to be the high-wire tension of the first book; and the author tried to make the building and election carry the book rather than the women characters. This book was a disappointment, but I can't wait to read the third (and final?) entry in this futuristic story of a women-only society.

    "When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back,
    Three from the circle, three from the track;
    Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
    Five will return, and one go alone."
    With these mysterious words, Will Stanton discovers on his 11th birthday that he is no mere boy. He is the Sign-Seeker, last of the immortal Old Ones, destined to battle the powers of evil that trouble the land. His task is monumental: he must find and guard the six great Signs of the Light, which, when joined, will create a force strong enough to match and perhaps overcome that of the Dark. Embarking on this endeavor is dangerous as well as deeply rewarding; Will must work within a continuum of time and space much broader than he ever imagined.

    Susan Cooper, in her five-title Dark Is Rising sequence, creates a world where the conflict between good and evil reaches epic proportions. She ranks with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien in her ability to deliver a moral vision in the context of breathtaking adventure. No one can stop at just one of her thrilling fantasy novels. Among many other prestigious awards, The Dark Is Rising is a Newbery Honor Book and a Carnegie Medal Honor Book. (Ages 8 and older) --Emilie Coulter

    When Will Stanton turns 11, he experiences a birthday different than most and learns that he is the last of the old ones. The old ones were put on earth to protect the world from being over taken by an evil power, the Dark. He has to find six signs that will be of key importance in the battle between Dark and Light. Will the Dark take over the world? or will he be able to prevent it?

    I didn't really care for this book because I lost interest in certain parts. I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy books and although I got bored the writers craft is pretty good.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Indeed.......2007-10-02

    Normally I like these sorts of children's series; however, this is quite poorly done. I was disappointed not only with the stylistic elements of this book, but with the story itself. Perhaps it's just the way Susan Cooper tells a story, but the action sequences are rather dull; after they're over you're rather unsure of what happened. Also, nothing difficult is ever required of the main character; things, it seems, just happen to or for him.

    I hate to compare this book with the genius of J.K. Rowling, but, in Harry Potter, we are always told what is happening during action sequences. Harry casts such-and-such a spell, Volde-pardon me-he who must not be named casts such-and-such back etc. Whereas in Susan Cooper's book there's always some kind of unexplained grandios event, a blinding light, and then the fight with the abstract entity is over.

    Maybe it's just me; the book almost won the Newberry Prize for children's literature.

    I, however, recommend staying away from this book and this series -especially if you're suffering from Harry Potter withdrawal and looking for a replacement.

    3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2007-09-21

    After seeing the trailer of the upcoming movie, I decided to read this book. However I decided to read the first in the series `Over Sea, Under Stone' first, and I enjoyed it. `The Dark is Rising' is a much different book, in style, in tone and with new characters (with one exception). It is a fantasy story, whereas `Over Sea, Under Stone' was more of an adventure story. Many of the reviews I read of the first book complained it wasn't as good as The Dark is Rising because of the lack of magical elements. But frankly the magic in the Dark is rising is a bit of a mess.
    First of all it is unclear what the signs are for, or what exactly their power is. It is mentioned that when all six signs are joined then the Dark will be defeated, but by the time the signs have been joined, the Dark has already been defeated.
    Secondly the use of time travel is really problematic here. I will just give one example; the Book of Gramarye has to be destroyed after Will has read it, so that it won't be in danger of being stolen by the dark. Will travels back to the 1800's to read it, it is then destroyed- but what's to stop the Dark from traveling further back in time and stealing it then? The whole exercise seems pointless. There are many other plot points like that.
    Also the story lacks tension, the Dark Rider is not really menacing, and Will being immortal is never in any danger. He is `The Sign Seeker' but he doesn't do much seeking, he basically goes somewhere and someone gives him a sign- because it is the anointed time.
    Having said all that it is enjoyable in parts, and I will probably continue the series, but I must say if cold weather is a sign of the Dark, then the Dark must really be powerful here in Alberta!

    5 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-07

    Will Stanton's 11th birthday is different. He learns that he is one of the Old Ones, the newst, and is now a warrior for the Light, and things will never be the same again, as he is drawn into the battle.

    Supernatural happenings begin to occur, but he does have a mentor, and a prediction to live by.

    When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back;
    Three from the circle, three from the track;
    Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
    Five will return, and one go alone.

    Iron for the birthday, bronze carried long;
    Wood from the burning, stone out of song;
    Fire in the candle-ring, water from the thaw;
    Six signs the circle, and the grail gone before

    Fire on the mountain shall find the harp of gold
    Played to wake the Sleepers, oldest of the old;
    Power from the green witch, lost beneath the sea;
    All shall find the light at last, silver on the tree.

    It will be Will's task to find the Six Signs of Power, needed by the Light to turn back the Dark. The forces of Light are week, so Will, barely a boy becomes a necessary soldier, despite the risks.

    Will must travel in time, master the Gramarye and powers of the Old Ones, find the Signs, encounter mythological figures, and weather a supernaturally harsh winter, all while staying alive and fitting into his normal, large, mortal family.

    2 out of 5 stars good story, poor writing.......2007-07-26

    The story in this book is pretty good and interesting, but the characters annoy me. Maybe I was expecting them to be as good as Harry Potter, where, unlike this book, the main character can solve his own problems and is courageous. I know this book was written before Harry Potter, but JK Rowling had Harry Potter in her head long before. her story is more interesting and has more subplots and a unique style of writing. this book is sort of unique, but I have read ones quite like it. If you want a good book, read the Harry Potter series. Oh, contrary to other comments, Harry does not just revolve around quiddich, in the last book, he doesn't even play it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great series.......2005-04-14

    I've been reading this series ever since it first came out in paperback. It follows a team of commandoes that travel through time trying to keep the enemy from causing disruptions. Each book takes on a well known period of history (Ivanhoe, Scarlet Pimpernle, Jason and the Argonauts) and somehow makes it work without being contrary to known history. The books are lively and well written. I wish he continued the series. I wish the series would be re-issued so I could replace my books that are falling apart and acquire the one I don't have (The Cleopatra Caper). I give these book 2 thumbs up!

    5 out of 5 stars Timewars Series is a definite MUST READ - ITS GREAT.......1997-10-09

    Simon Hawke's Timewars series involves the use of time travel to fight the wars of the future. Excellently written, and I wish he wouldn't have stopped. They would make an excellent movie or TV series. Helps in the learning of history since all the stories take place in the past. Great for kids who love all the sci-fi stuff, when you want them to learn a little history. GREAT BOOKS!

    Book Description

    It is one of the world's oldest and most intriguing cuisines, yet few have explored the diverse dishes and enchanting flavors of Arab cookery beyond hummus and tabouleh. In 188 recipes, The Arab Table introduces home cooks to the fresh foods, exquisite tastes, and generous spirit of the Arab table.

    May S. Bsisu, who has lived and cooked in Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, England, and now the United States, takes you along a reassuringly down-to-earth and warmly personal path through exciting culinary territory. The Arab Table focuses intimately on the foods of Arab countries such as Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Syria.

    The book offers a bountiful range of appealing dishes: cold and hot mezza, or little dishes; vibrant salads and fresh vegetable preparations; savory soups, stews, and hearty casseroles; baked and grilled meats, poultry, and fish; cooling drinks; and ambrosial desserts. There are recipes for familiar dishes including Falafel, Chicken and Lamb Kebabs, and Baklava, as well as a diverse selection of lesser known delights greatly enjoyed around the world, such as Eggplant Pomegranate Salad, Zucchini with Bread and Mint, Grilled Halloumi Cheese Triangles, and Arab Flatbread. Celebration dishes, the cornerstone of Arab cuisine, include Moroccan and Lebanese Couscous, Baked Lamb with Rice and Chickpeas, and Baked Sea Bass with Rice and Caramelized Onions. No Arab cookbook would be complete without an ample selection of soups and stews, the customary way to break the fast at the end of each day during Ramadan. The Arab table is also well known for its sweets: Semolina Pistachio Layer Cake, Milk Pudding, and, of course, date-, nut-, and cream-filled pastries perfumed with rose and orange-blossom water are just a sampling of the desserts included here.

    Along with these treasured recipes collected from May's extended family, friends, neighbors, and her own discoveries, The Arab Table is also a resource for learning about the traditions and customs associated with this time-honored cuisine. Throughout, essays on Arab holidays, from Eid Al Adha, the feast celebrating the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca, to Ramadan and Mubarakeh, the celebration for the birth of a baby, are explained and menus are provided for each. May enlightens readers as to customary greetings (How do you say Happy Ramadan?), gifts (What do you bring to an Arab home during Ramadan?), and wishes (How do you acknowledge the birth of a baby?) that are traditionally extended during these special occasions.

    Now you can bring the abundance and flavors of The Arab Table to your table.

    5 out of 5 stars A definite must!.......2007-09-20

    This is one of the best books on Arab cuisine that I own. Bsisu is an excellent cook - the recipes are wonderful and easy to follow. The end results are great and very authentic - perhaps because Bsisu book is more of a book on recipes passed down from family and friends than a cultural anthology (home recipes taste the best after all!) The book concentrates mostly on cooking from the levant (where Bsisu is from) but it also has several recipes from other regions, especially the gulf region where Bsisu lived. It includes most of the popular arab recipes as well as lesser known ones, such as those from Gaza, where Bsisu's husband hails. The book is also filled with wonderful cultural ancedotes from Bsisu's family life as well as a thorough explanation of many arab (both christian and muslim) cultural traditions. One thing the books lacks is many stew recipes (she has several of the popular ones but just not as many as I expected). However, what the book lacks in stews is compensated by the huge reportaire of main course dishes -all which are excellent.

    The only caveat I have with this book is the introduction section, where Bsisu lists all the arab countries. She lumps all the gulf arab countries in one category despite listing all the other countries seperately. While the cooking of the Gulf states is similar, it is no more similar than the cooking of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. I would understand lumping Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE and Qatar in one category. Oman and Saudi however deserves categories of their own. Oman lies on the Arabian sea and has a very different culture than the rest of the gulf as it is influenced by trade with Africa and India. As for Saudi Arabia, only the eastern coast has a cuisine similar to the rest of the Gulf. The rest of saudi arabia borders egypt (through the red sea), the levant and Iraq, so its cuisine is vast and distinctive. Of course, Bsisu is probably just not familiar with the various styles of Saudi cooking since the book is really based on her experience of the Arab world - nothing is wrong with that but I just wanted to point it out. Another strange thing is that Bsisu doesn't include Libya Algeria and Sudab among her list of Arab countries and I find this omission really strange as they are very important and it doesn't make sense to include every other arab country except these three! Anyhow, NONE of this detracts from the book, as like I said before it is a book of family recipes and recipes passed down from friends and not a cultural anthology. The recipes are excellent, authentic and hail from all over the arab world - so if you want a cook book on arab cooking, buy this one. I bought this book from my sister who learnt how to cook from it and my cousin bought herself a copy too - they both love it!

    5 out of 5 stars May Shakhashir Bsisu's Book is also Good for Vegans.......2007-06-24

    There are recipes such as Spinach Triangles, Onion Rice, Fava Bean Salad, and many others that are purely vegan. The good thing with most middleastern recipes (Arab & Iranian) is that you can omit the meat (or replace the broth with water) and still have a great-tasting food (soy ground meat is also an amazing substitute for real ground beef). This book is also good for families who want to alternate between foods with meat and without meat.

    5 out of 5 stars I'd Give It Ten Stars.......2007-05-13

    Absolute entertainment. This cookbook goes beyond any other cookbook in my collection towards understanding the whys and wheres of the recipes. Its a cultural information book as well as a cookbook, I find myself reading it even when I have no intentions of doing any kind of cooking. An excellent source of information on customs and traditions of the Middle East. Extremely well researched and the information is presented in a way that is purely entertaining. If you can stop reading long enough to actually try one of the recipes, you will be rewarded with a delicious meal. Kudos to May Bsisu on this project, I love this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Incomparable; perfect intro to Middle-Eastern cuisine.......2007-02-14

    After perusing several cookbooks on Middle Eastern cuisine, this is the one I chose. For specifically two reasons: it contains two universal favorites: chicken schwarma and fattoush, which are the leading dishes served in all the Middle Eastern restaurants here in Michigan, specifically those in Dearborn. I was astonished to discover in so many like cookbooks that failed to contain schwarma and fattoush. Therefore, "The Arab Table" is definitely the one to have.

    May Bsisu has done a splendid job, backed by all her friends and family, in giving us the pure basics of classic Middle Eastern fare. These are the recipes of dishes which are recognizable to the world at large. They are especially conducive to home kitchens, and are clear, easy to follow, and tantalizing. After you get started on these recipes, you may find yourself - as I did - at the outset making this cuisine a few times a week, rather than in a month, to savor all the riches of flavors, textures and colors.

    In addition, Ms. Bsisu provides an excellent glossary, explanation of ingredients, and, as well, sources to obtain some of these, if there aren't any suitable markets in your area.

    Best of all, though, in keeping with the generosity of spirit, there are histories, anecdotes, and background information about all that which surrounds the illustrious history of Middle Eastern cookery and traditions; therefore it makes a terrific reading companion as well. The author invites us (delightfully so) into her own family and her inheritance of their traditions. Laudably, Ms. Bsisu keeps these facts and lore to the basics, providing just enough details to both inform and entertain.

    Perhaps most important of all, this book is a wonderful bridge to gap the Middle East to the West, in the most hospitable way. In a world where there is so much misunderstanding between cultures, this book could ostensibly serve as a small, but significant reminder that all of us, all over the world, share the love of the bounties of the earth, the comforts it provides, and the bringing together of families. We here in the West would be all the poorer without these riches of taste sensations.

    Thanks to Morrow for investing in this luxurious compendium; and for Ms Bsisu for the sheer expansiveness and scope of this incomparable cookbook. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Hands-down the best Mideast cookbook out there.......2006-09-18

    After perusing dozens of English-language Middle Eastern cookbooks over the years - none of which I found to be as comprehensive and authentic (based on my experience being raised in the Arab world) as I wanted - I was wonderfully surprised to receive this tome as a wedding gift. May Bsisu does a wonderful job explaining how to cook traditional Arabic dishes and the spectrum of the recipes she includes is impressive. I highly, highly, highly recommend this book.

      Book Description

      Spare the punishment and raise a happy, well-behaved dog …

      The Complete Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training, Second Edition, replaces the standard punishment-based training methods that have potential consequences for puppies and limited effectiveness with older dogs. This guide demonstrates positive training methods, based on a system of rewards and encouragement, to teach basic commands and housetraining, and correct a host of problem behaviors. Readers will also learn loose-leash walking games and how to train for the American Kennel Club's increasingly popular Canine Good Citizen test.

      • Dog owners number more than 40 million in the United States, and more and more of them are giving up on punitive training methods
      • One of the few dog training books that exclusively adheres to positive training methods

      2 out of 5 stars Psychological Argument Never Gets Down To The Bone.......2007-01-04

      While I agree with the author's emphasis on the positive, she is redundant - to the point of defensive - in stating and restating the argument. Being harsh or punishing a pet is bad. I get it. But this tome is very slow to arrive at practical, tactical "I can use this daily" advice. Dennison advocates that any form of negative discipline is counterproductive and to be avoided, often drawing human psychology parallels which, while inviting on the surface deny that Lupus canus and Homo sapien vary beyond the latter having opposable thumbs. Not all dogs share the same issues, and while I emphasize positive reinforcment for good behavior I have found that my vizsla responds to a sharp, unequivocal "NO" (i.e., entering a street; cat litter snack; paw on the table) without surrendering any affection. In due course, using an appropriate balance of reward and correction, she has learned her boundaries.

      As another reviewer admits, "I wanted to like this book, but, I didn't" and I don't think you will either. (And I would suggest that you can't aford, let alone carry enough treats to reward as often as the author advocates.) My advice: Look for a book or information on your specific breed (e.g., The Versatile Vizsla is superb for those owning Hungarian Short Haired Pointers); search the Internet; trust your vet and your (and your dog's) instincts.

      3 out of 5 stars Should be called the Herding Dog training manual.......2006-09-05

      I think positive training methods can be used for all breeds of dogs but I think the author has trouble presenting her book that way. She presents the info as if you own a herding dog and then adds on some quick line about what to do if your dog is resistant. She doesn't acknowledge enough that different breeds truly have different issues. It doesn't mean that you can't overcome these issues, but they are real. I didn't have to do training to prevent my hounds from barking and going crazy at the front door. They just don't do it. I have 3 and none of them has ever done this. My dogs don't nip. However, they will do anything to steal food and they don't want to walk next to me if there is an interesting smell (which apparently is always). These are the issues that are tough for me.

      Anyway, if you have a herding dog, I would imagine that this is a great book, but I felt like she didn't do a good job of making the book more general. I called my friend who owns a Sheltie and recommended it to her.

      For positive training books, I prefered Clicking with Your Dog by Peggy Tillman. I felt like she presents the info for all dog owners.

      4 out of 5 stars wordy but good information.......2006-07-31

      This book is very wordy with few photos so I worry that adopters won't really read it all but those that do will find a wealth of good information. For adopters that like to read and want know all there is to know about training their dog, I recommend this book. For those adopters who want to see photos of what to do, I recommend Maran's Illustrated Dog Training.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for the basics.......2006-06-22

      Pam Dennison is perhaps one of the best authors in terms of presenting positive training in an understandable way, that shows clearly why it works and how it fits naturally into a dog's "culture." I also love that she included not just one, but two chapters on body language - sorely lacking in many books. This one has knocked a couple other recommended reads a bit lower on my list. More approachable than Pat Miller (an excellent trainer but too much train-of-thought in her books) and less technical than Pamela Reid (excellent read if you want more depth, tho), anyone can use this tool to create a wonderful relationship with a willing, eager-to-learn companion.

      This book is not for the more challenging issues. It is mostly manners and prevention - the basics. Pair it with Outwitting Dogs, however, and you have all you need to tackle most* issues (*barring aggression, which should be handled with the help of a behaviorist who uses counter-conditioning and desensitization).

      5 out of 5 stars I'm an idiot and I approve this book..........2006-04-04

      As the owner of three terriers, I was happy to find a book that endorsed positive training methods. The mere sight of pinch collars make me a little sick, but then again, I am no dog training expert, I am a regular "idiot" who purchased this book for help.

      Dennison, I think, does a thorough job of explaining positive training methods and the science behind them. I like her sense of humor, ("I'd rather eat poop than come!") and the way that she breaks down training into manageable tasks. I have seen wonderful results with all three of my terriers after a very brief time.

      And just for the record, I'm not sure that all of the people who reviewed this book actually read it. NOWHERE did I find an exercise that involved tying your dog up with a 6 foot leash and approaching him/her to discourage jumping. Dennison openly states that she does not believe in using leashes as a training tool unless you are teaching "come" (which requires a LONG leash and NO tying up) or loose leash walking. Perhaps this person reviewed the wrong book or simply voiced a very misguided opinion.

      Secondly, training a dog with positive methods requires WORK and BRAIN POWER. It is much easier to pop a leash, yell or hit. This method is effective because you learn to communicate with your dog in their "language." I agree with the reviewer who stated that practicing positive methods strengthened their relationship with their dog. The same happened with me. So, if you'd like a healthy relationship with your dog that involves "leading" rather than "dominating" check out this book!

        Book Description

        This newly revised third edition combines recent and classic research with hundreds of all-color photographs to survey Flow Blue chinaware, a highly prized and eagerly sought after ceramic. The values, conveniently located in the captions, have been updated to reflect current market prices. Also, a valuable new index to patterns has been added, giving every collector a quick reference source to the patterns found in all four of the author's guides to Flow Blue. As always, the beautiful color photographs, arranged in chronological and stylistic periods, document the changes in Flow Blue patterns and forms throughout the nineteenth century. Everyday objects as well as rare artifacts are portrayed side-by-side to inform and excite beginning and experienced collectors alike. Common and unusual marks from English, American, and European manufacturers accompany the photographs. The history of Flow Blue, its unusual and distinctive decoration, vessel forms, use, and dating techniques all are covered by an archaeologist whose eye for detail make this a valuable collector's guide. Values are presented for the many forms presented, from the smallest butter pat to the largest platters and footbaths.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2007-01-02

        This book is a part of my Flow Blue research library. Jeffrey Snyder is a leading authority in Flow Blue collecting. His descriptions are clear and precise. His photography is fantastic.
        The prices listed in this book should only be used for insurance purposes as the Flow Blue collecting phase swings with decorating fashions and colors of the times. In reality, you can find prices much more affordable than suggested in ths book.
        Add this to your collection and you will enjoy it for years to come!

        5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners and experienced both.......2000-08-02

        This book gives readers a thorough understanding of what Flow Blue is, when it was made, how it was decorated and what it is worth. The pictures are terrific. However, a book would have to be huge to provide prices for every piece in every place setting (there are over 1500 patterns)! I'm tired of reviews from inexperienced folks who don't know enough to review responsibly. Get this book and judge for yourself. It's been around for years and is worth having!

        5 out of 5 stars A lasting value.......2000-05-08

        This book provides newcomers and long time collectors with hundreds of patterns in Flow Blue. The wares are organized chronologically by period and values are provided for the wares shown. For beginners the book defines the wares, details the decorations and how they were applied and provides information on the marks appearing on the wares. This is a very good book with solid research and beautiful photographs that will serve collectors well for many years.

        1 out of 5 stars so what's a 5 piece place setting worth?.......2000-04-30

        Just a simple question, right? Wrong! I paid a lot of moneyhoping to find an answer to my question. This book is for a collectorwho already knows what the flow blue pieces are worth. If you're a beginning collector, save your money!

          5 out of 5 stars Something Different.......2004-12-07

          As a twenty-something crafter, it is often difficult for me to find cross-stitch books that are more modern and suit my tastes (I'm not a big fan of teddy bears and old samplers). I bought this book because my mother used to read Mother Goose to me when I was young, and I have been happily surprised! These aren't necessary geared toward the young adult stitchers, but the color usage and reminiscence of the patterns keep me coming back time and again. There are a few easy patterns, but most of them are fairly challanging to the intermediate stitcher, which is a plus. I definitely enjoy this book and am glad I added it to my collection while it was still available!

          5 out of 5 stars My all-time favourite cross stitch book!.......2004-03-21

          I picked up this book about two years ago and I am still cross-stitching its patterns! It is simply the best cross-stitch book ever and it doubles as a children's book too!

          5 out of 5 stars All-Time Favorite Book of Childen's Cross-stitch Charts.......2002-06-25

          This is one of my all-time favorite books of cross-stitch charts!

          Interestingly, I first saw the book "Mother Goose's Words of Wit and Wisdom" in an elementary school library. I loved the bright colors and great illustrations. But it took me a while to realize that *all* the illustrations in the book were counted cross-stitch designs! Once I realized that, I wondered if there were charts available of these illustrations. After a bit of searching, I discovered that indeed this second book was available - a book of charts!

          The front of this book looks like the original, with the rhymes and illustrations. At the back of the book you'll find the corresponding charts. They are full-size graphs, black print on a blue grid with a color key for DMC floss.

          Also included is a nice little explanation about Mother Goose and the Sampler, as well as a short section called Cross-stitch Essentials that gives a short tutorial on cross-stitch techniques.

          This book is a real keeper!

          5 out of 5 stars MOST EXCELLENT!.......2000-07-07

          If you're looking for a cross-stitch book that has everything including cute patterns, this is the one you're looking for. You can't ask for a better cross-stitch book than this one. The colors and the designs are so refreshing and very good. I myself have done three of the patterns in the book now. If you are truly a cross stitch enthusiast, this book's for you!

                  5 out of 5 stars Stitches That Charm.......2003-11-23

                  ~Rarely have we searched to find a library book so that we could own it and read it over and over at home. Since we checked this out, my son (two and a half) has had me read (and sing) it to him every night. I'm not really judging the stitchery from a fine-art perspective. I know that the way it's done and the homemade quality is heartwarming in the very best sense. We find ourselves longing for this book and breathing a sigh of relief when we open it and start to read. I find myself~~ endlessly facinated by the patchworked stitched borders, the lovingly created little characters, and the humor underlying the illustrations. For example Old Mother Hubbard has a procession of little dogs dead, laughing, smoking a pipe, etc. in which the simple little doggy wins my heart every night with his grins and tricks. It is just endlessly charming, amusing, and captivating in turns. And brings us gently to sweet dreams! Thank you for this book, Belinda Downes. We'll keep it forever,~~ and be sure I will be looking for anything else you create.~

                        While this book isn't perfect, it is worth looking at. The pictures are magazine-like, and at the back are several crafts projects. A bunch of the multiple view photos show the projects in their finished states. So if you're looking for a crafts book on this subject, it's a good choice.

                        This is Enrica Stabile's first book ever published. A few years back, I bought her second book titled "Comfortable Country" and assumed "Open Air Living" would be as visually rich, beautiful, well-designed, and inspiring. I was very disappointed! "Open Air Living" is comprised almost entirely of very simplistic outdoor settings that are either boring, visually uninteresting and bland, or have no real creative or stylish purpose other than to feature the author's family, friends, and pets. Many were repetitive; a lot of closeups and different angles of the same things. Out of approximately 119 photographs, I only found a dozen or so to be pretty and appealing, or even useful for recreating similiar settings at home. Normally, I browse through books at the library or bookstore before I buy them. Unfortunately, I purchased this one online based soley upon the author's second book and Amazon's reduced price, and mistakenly thought it would be as lovely to look at as "Comfortable Country".

                          Book Description

                          The erotic artist Wolf has created a bizarre and juicy little fetish niche unlike anything before - superheroines in bondage! "Capes and kink" works for a growing legion of fans who just can't get enough of the nasty, nasty stuff! Horny apes, evil lesbians, maniacal mad scientists, all taking turns seeing just how much punishment these "so-called" super-types can really take! Fiendishly clever and expertly created, Wolf has pretty much cornered the market on this new form of entertainment.

                          3 out of 5 stars Collection of artwork by Wolf that has a Superhero theme.......2005-04-11

                          Adult black & white collection of superheroes in bondage (collection of drawing, not a graphic novel).

                          The front and back cover show what this book could have been like if the pictures had been in color (interesting pictures of superheroes or "innocents" in bondage scenes). The copyright page black & white drawing of two women shows what this book could have been like if the artist had drawn the rest of the pictures with that level of detail (quite good drawing) instead of the hasty "sketch" book approach Wolf took with the rest of the pictures (if you get the chance to see the back cover, then what I'm describing might be better illustrated, as the back cover involves two full-colored women leaning against a sketchy black and white drawing). The pictures are interesting, and some are drawn with slightly more detail and time, but most are quite sketchy, and interesting despite that approach being taken, but the hasty sketchy approach is annoying (in some of the pictures, the other characters are just outlines). Some of the pictures are linked, and tell a brief story, though there is not one coherent thread throughout the book (other than superheroes in bondage, or superhero villains tormenting the innocent).

                          Book contains single pictures and linked pictures (that tell almost silent stories), some of which are quite violent (at least in the sense that they imply that the character is in the process of dying or being cooked). Despite the mention of the hasty/sketchy appearance of many of the pictures, the book is interesting.

                          These letters tell the story of a young American woman of Japanese descent who was stranded in Japan during World War II. They chronicle her turbulent life from her arrival in Japan through her experiences as a civilian employee of U.S. forces in the first years of the American occupation.

                          5 out of 5 stars An Important Addition to the Field of Asian American History.......2000-09-14

                          This tightly edited volume of Mary Tomita's letters is an important and very necessary addition to the field of Asian American Studies. Exploring the wartime experiences of Mary Kimoto, a young Nisei (second generation Japanese American) from rural California who travels to Japan and is subsequently trapped in that country during World War II, the letters in this book give tremendous voice to the experiences of this Kibei woman. Kibei were Japanese Americans partially educated in Japan before returning to the US to reside permanently. While the exact number of Kibei is unknown, they are estimated to have numbered into the thousands. While many Nisei went abroad for study tours (kengakudan) sponsored by local immigrant newspapers, an relatively smaller group went to Japan for long-term study or work. Full of warmth, humor, and pain, Tomita's letters to her best friend Miye betray the somber realities of being a minority among the Japanese. It adds a unique chapter to the history of American racism, the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans, and Japanese history. All this, and so much more. This was a wonderfully crafted, expertly edited text that should be on the shelves of anyone interested in issues of biculturalism, racism, and Japanese American history. I cannot recommend this book enough, and will be sure to assign it in my university courses.

                          1 out of 5 stars More Novel Than History Source.......2000-07-19

                          The book is a personal account of an American trapped in Japan after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. One expecting lengthy details on life on the Japanese home front will be disappointed. Only a very small number pages give one much information on life in Japan during WWII. To be blunt, I thought the book was pretty boring.
