Book Description
Despite being born into a poverty-stricken family to an uneducated and naïve mother and a ne'er-do-well absentee father, Alfred Browning Barrett was determined to rise above his circumstances and make something of his life.
To that end, he overcome societal obstacles such as deep-rooted cultural beliefs, unscrupulous teachers, greedy and inhumane employers, and jealous friends and neighbors to become one of the island's most well-known, respected, and feared police detectives.
Through his attention to detail and careful setup of Barrett Island's history and Albert's background, Ronald A. Bonnick creates a well-crafted tale of the Detective from Barrett Island, exposing the subtle moral that if you are ambitious and determined, you can rise above any circumstance in life to become anything you wish.
Book Description
In a world of sentient animals and humans, the hardheaded (and hard-shelled) wizard Clothahump searches across the dimensions for another kind of wizard to help defeat the looming threat posed by the armies of the Plated Folk. What he gets is Jonathan-Thomas Meriweather, part-time would-be rock guitarist and janitor, who finds that with the use of a unique instrument called a duar, he can perform magic by playing and choosing from his well-worn repertoire of rock. Trouble is, while the lyrics he sings may be righteous, the magic they spawn is all too often something else¨

Humour and Adventure at its Best!.......2007-05-22
I have read and worn bare my copy of this book. True, it was in the early 90's when I fist chanced upon a copy while boringly flipping through the local Book Mark store - but it was a treasure found.
Right now the lines still ring in my head as make me smile for its cute antics and sarcastically funny characters:
"Were you going to eat it?" - JonTom
"Nay, I were going to hang it between me neck and use it as a bloody pendant, I was..." - Mudge
Fun series.......2005-09-06
The book is dated because many of the references are from the 1980's but it's very fun series. I highly reccommend it to any of the fan of the SciFi/Fantasy genre.
Probably the best in the series.......2005-06-04
I don't know WHAT the Amazon official review is about, because it's not this book.
At first it sounds like a bad joke. A college student getting stoned in his dorm room gets yanked through a dimensional portal by a senile wizard, and doesn't notice. He ends up on a world populated by talking animals and sword-and-sorcery stereotypes, and gets sent unwillingly on a quest.
What Foster does, however, is concentrate on giving us a street-level view of epic fantasy. The talking animals are not cute -- they're brutal and savage, as befits a medieval world. Magic is dangerous and unpredictable, and wizards are seen as lunatics. The threat from Ultimate Evil elicits more laughter from the populace than sympathy for the heroes' cause.
It's the very nastiness of the world that makes the book work. While I'd still call it comedic fantasy, the humor, even the fish-out-of-water bits, has a dangerous edge to it.
There are two problem areas I should note, however. The first is that the title, "Spellsinger," is very misleading; while musical magic is a theme in the book, it's rarely used. We won't learn much about actual spellsinging until the third book in the series.
The second is that the series begins to degrade quickly after the second book. Once the first major story arc is wrapped up, the remaining novels become increasingly light and frivolous in tone and the world-building becomes careless.
Not the greatest..........2005-05-06
Well I loved the book in many aspects but it still lacks certian aspects of charactization that would make it deserve 5 stars. A lot of it is indeed fairly enteraining but most of the characters are 3 diminsional, mainly lacking their own motives that make them remotely believable.
For examply Flor was was way to spunky and her reaction at being transported into another diminsion just didn't feel all that realistic. Her character also lacks certian elements that goes to the point of being absurd. I also found her attraction towards a certian otter rather disturbing and almost beastial. Not the remotest being even close to a believable aspect. I also am not a big fan of the whole fury fantasy I suppose. I guess it may grow on me... then again it may not, especially if the girls fall in love with the animals, etc. (get real here)
Still over all a good read, I found some of the dialoge hard to follow and wished that he put some effort into making the a little understandable. However I still will keep the four star vote because I found parts incredibly funny and it did keep me around till it was finished.
Excellent, light hearted fantasy novel.......2005-02-05
This novel is one of my favorite "light" fantasy novels. Alan Dean Foster crafts a wonderful story of a somewhat directionless college student who is pulled(via magical means) into another world where he discovers that he can create magic by combining his mediocre singing talents with his guitar skills (hence, the title of this story)!
Along with the great amount of subtle (and no so subtle) humor in the story, there is plenty of innuendo of the adult nature as well as language that could be considered inappropriate for children.
Book Description
Near the end of the 21st century, the murder of her husband and daughter by terrorists drives Ebriel Serique to venture beyond her charmed life to confront the truth about the world. And while she never would have suspected it, Ebriel discovers that she has the courage for anything--even violence.
Customer Reviews:
What resistance?.......2005-09-12
The Maquisarde is the story of Ebriel, a woman who loses her husband and daughter in a supposed terrorist attack. Distraught with bereavement, she is offered the opportunity to join the Chain, a self-styled "resistance" movement. Running parallel with her story is that of James, a military officer with a troubled past of his own, who begins to doubt the integrity of those he serves. And then their paths finally cross . . .
I wanted to like this book better than I actually did. I found the setting problematic. The International Cooperative Alliance, where Ebriel and James begin, is made up of first world countries who have formed a protective alliance to establish a quarantine between them and other regions, which are supposedly racked with war and disease. But this setting is never delineated clearly enough to give the story a really solid background and highlight the differences between InCo and everyone else. Was InCo lying about the need for the quarantine or not? The bad guys are cartoonish, the good guys are undoubtedly heroic - there are few shades of grey in this story. Everything is resolved far too easily at the end.
However, the biggest problem I had with the book was Ebriel herself. For a character who supposedly embodies resistance, she's remarkably passive. She never questioned her life in InCo. The Chain found her, not the other way around. She contributes no great ideas, no special talents - she just exists to get sent on whatever mission comes next. It's James who saves her life and finds the evidence to destroy her enemy. This book is also emotionally hollow. How can we grieve with Ebriel for her husband and daughter when they are barely mentioned and her life with them is not described? How can we lament the loss of her old life when she seems to have no trouble adjusting between that old life and the new? Why bother making her a musician when music plays so minimal a role in the story? Ebriel goes along with whatever is happening then suddenly decides to do something different, but when we see no gradual change in her thoughts and feelings over time (and the passage of time is hard to pick in this book) - we are just told she now feels different about something.
I was disappointed with this book after the glowing reviews I read. It's a competent adventure/romance tale, with a minimal science-fiction element. Louise Marley does a lot of telling, but not much showing.
An Interesting Premise.......2005-06-03
I enjoyed this book. The transformation of Ebriel from a rather self-centered musician to a revolutionary was interesting, as were the out-of-the ordinary locales uses in the book. It was an interesting change-of-pace story.
I did have a few quibbles with it, though. Given the fact that the Line of Demarcation was an artificial construct, drawn after nuclear and biochemical warfare, it just seemed a little strange to me that drift didn't seem to be taken into consideration. There also didn't really seem to be anything wrong with the people on the opposite side of the line, other than the destruction of some of their industrial base, and lack of food and medical care. I didn't quite find it believable that the USA would have gone along with the plan, and allow its military control to be subsumed by the new order. It also didn't make sense to me that a woman as driven as Ebriel was, who continued to plan her own agenda even while seemingly to go along with the plans of the Chain, who had such hatred toward General Glass, would, when finally presented with the opportunity to kill him, would have a sudden change of heart. That seemed more of a plot contrivance than a logical extension of the character's behavior.
Splendid Evocation of a Bleak Future.......2004-12-04
Louise Marley's "The Maquisarde" is among the best novels I've read set in the late 21st Century. With respect to style and tone, it most closely resembles John Shirley's "A Song Called Youth" cyberpunk trilogy, especially since it deals with many of the same issues which Shirley wrote about years ago. "The Maquisarde" is a compelling saga about French flutist Ebriel Serique, who loses her husband and young daughter in a terrorist attack which she blames on the military leader of the International Cooperative Alliance (InCo), comprised of North America, Europe, Korea and Japan. It is the late 21st Century and the world has been divided into the industrialized powers which comprised the alliance and the rest, most of which are ravaged by disease, poverty and the lingering effects of nuclear conflict (most notably between India and Pakistan). Ebriel undergoes an amazing transformation from a splendid classical musician to a committed revolutionary terrorist determined to aid those who are not InCo citizens. Marley's dismal, yet still optimistic, view of the late 21st Century is one of the best examples of world-building I have come across in science fiction, and her heroine Ebriel is surely among the most captivating.
Good, but.......2004-10-20
I've enjoyed Marley's work before, but this one left me a bit disappointed. Mostly that was because I was reading it during the days of the Beslan tragedy, when real resistance/rebel fighters took real lives. This book was just too tv-like for me by the end. Everything was neatly wrapped up - sure there was work left to do, but it was just work, not the Big Struggle.
I will say that Marley writes well, and I will continue to read her books.
Some of Marley's best work to date--a fine sci-fi novel.......2004-09-16
I actually liked "Maquisarde" better than "Glass Harmonica", Marley's award-winning novel. The premise, a resistance against an evil corporate-government entity is not unique, but this is a well-handled rendering of the subject. The novel is in some ways reminiscent of Marge Piercey's "He, She, and It" though without Piercey's richness in creating a future world.
Ebriel, a French flutist, loses her family in a shocking event which is covered up. She goes on a heroic quest to bring the perpetrators to justice, and her personal experience of persecution and her resulting rebellion are really the core of the novel. As usual, Marley brings her own knowledge of music to provide detail and context to her work, a nice touch as always and gives a flavor to the writing that I enjoy. I just couldn't put it down.

Peanutty Goodness.......2007-06-04
This book cleary states it is for peanut butter lovers only. And they're right, if you don't like peanut butter, you have no business getting this book, though that much is obvious.
The recipes in this book are all very quick and easy, and most are favorites with just a peanut butter twist. Though there are some, mainly sandwhiches, which I can only reccommend for adventurous eaters to try, though most are much more kid friendly. Some recipes are quite obvious, and aren't really needed, like the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, though the book would be incomplete without it.
All of the recipes in the book use peanut butter, but some use special Peanut Butter and Co flavors, that you can buy online or at certain realtors, (a list is included.) There are also recipes on how to make the special peanut butters at home, though the recommend their own brand.
The book starts with a foreward by Jerry Seinfeild, who was of course made famous on his namesake tv show, Seinfeild. His intro seems slighty out of place, since he really has nothing to do with peanut butter, or the rest of the book, and seems to talk more about bagels then peanut butter.
The book's introduction by the author, Mr. Lee Zalben, is much more fitting, interesting, and better written, as he tells of the start, and success of Peanut Butter and Co.
There is then a section entitled Peanut Butter Basics, which is basically an endosement for buying Peanut Butter and Co products, but also gives the recipes for making your own versions of their peanut butters. There is also a somewhat interesting timeline of the history of peanut butter.
The recipes are divided into five chapters.
The first chapter, Breakfast Treats, is full of baked goods and batter based breakfast dishes, including peanut butter and jelly french toast, in which the peanut butter is in the toast, and the jelly is featured in the syrup. Seven recipes are included.
Chapter two is devoted entirely to sandwiches, of which there are fourteen, ranging from the original PB&J to innovative ones such as cinnamon raisin swirl, to obscure ones such as the Elvis.
Chapter three is entitled after-school snacks, but it is almost entirely devoted to cookies, though there are other sweets included, such as; peanut butter swirl brownies and peanut butter banana bread. Twenty one recipes are included.
The next chapter features fourteen recipes for using peanut butter in entrees such as peanut butter bbq chicken, spicy peanut butter burgers, and two recipes for peanut butter soup.
Chapter five is full of desserts, featuring cakes, pies, and pastries. There are twenty-two recipes total including; peanut butter - caramel cheesecake, peanut butter and strawberry shortcake, and peanut butter - berry crumble.
At the back of the book there's a helpful list of where their products are available, though it contradicts with their website's store locator.
Lots of color photos make this fun to look at as well as to read.
Good stuff!.......2007-01-16
I got this cookbook as a gift for a friend, but I ended up copying quite a few recipes out of it before I gave it away - there is some really creative and delicious stuff in here!
Peanut, Peanut Butter...Jelly!.......2006-04-19
Do you love peanut butter? Are you looking for different ways to use peanut butter in recipes? Do you love quirky cookbooks?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, than this just might be the cookbook for you. I picked up this cookbook on a whim at my local library, and decided to see if I could find any new recipes for my peanut loving son. Included I found several great recipes including Peanut Butter Banana Bread, Peanut Butter & Jelly Cupcakes, Peanut Butter Barbecued Chicken, and Thai-Style Shrimp Skewers. Also included but not personally tested by me include the basics of making your own homemade peanut butter (with several variations), S'more Sandwich, The Elvis (yes, with bacon, bananas, and honey), Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate, and Peanut Butter Tiramisu.
My only comments regarding my 3 star rating is that the cookbook might be too specialized for some, and that in order to improve, I would suggest a picture of each recipe and a spiral binding. However, the recipes included were unique, and yummy. Enjoy!
Peanut Buffer & Co Cookbook is a pnutty read!!.......2006-03-21
This book has a good foreword by Jerry Seinfeld as well as an interesting introduction by author Lee Zalben telling how he got the restaurant started. He also includes a large number of recipes he uses to make peanut butter treats. A worthwhile buy for the money!

Book Description
The death of Moose, the family dog, inspired author Jack Cotton to compile for his children a series of lessons gleaned from their canine companion of many years.
What does a dog know about living life? As this wise and warm new book explains, Moose understood quite a lot: from "Love Unconditionally" (I'm not always in the best mood....but that never affected Moose") to "Take a Nap in a Sunny Spot" ("every now and then find a nice, warm spot....and just snooze. There is no better way to reset the stress meter we all carry with us.")
The lessons Moose shares were written for children, but they will resonate with everyone who loves a dog or know someone who does. A Dog's Guide to Life, Lessons from "Moose" is a Chihuahua size book inspired by St. Bernard-size ideas and readers everywhere will be "woofing" about it.
Customer Reviews:
The Simplest Lessons are the Most Important.......2006-03-31
There's something for everyone in this heartfelt compilation of lessons learned from living with Moose that author Cotton has memorialized as Moose's legacy to his children and the rest of us. You don't need to be a dog lover to take something valuable away from this book. Successful people know the importance of enthusiasm, perseverance and arriving early. But most of the lessons involve maintaining that all-important focus on what matters most, some keen insights on living life more fully.
A Touching Tribute to Man's Best Friend.......2006-03-29
Jack Cotton beautifully captures the essence of what people can learn about human relationships from their dogs. A book that may be read on many levels, Cotton provides a touching memorial to the dog that helped him and his family cope with hard times. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has known the unconditional love that a loyal companion can provide.
It really is that simple.......2006-03-10
If we could all just remember this simple approach to life...A very powerful read. I liked it enough to buy twenty copies to share with people I care about.
A half-hearted effort ..........2006-03-09
I found this simplistic effort at sentamentalist prose more than a bit trite. There are a myriad of valuable and beneficial books out there for the grieving process when one loses one's pet but the author's vague references to pseudo-heartfelt sentiment left me unconvinced. How often do we need to hear about the digestive habits of one's pet I ask you when it is reduced to the level of flatulation?? We get it already. You miss your dog. Must it be the "stuff" of publication?
It's just another, in my opinion, in the stream of banal coffee table efforts that comes from the Penninsula that used to be Cape Cod. But again I don't anything decent has been penned on that spit of land since Henry David Thoreau visited it and left in the 1850s.
A Lesson For All.......2006-01-06
Our golden retriever, Beau, died some years ago and he is forever with us in spirit. This book is the heartfelt memory of a beloved pet, wonderful tribute to Moose and genuine catharsis for the author. Thank you for sharing this with all of us and I hope anyone that wants to adopt a pet will take the time to read this delightful and meaningful Lessons From Moose.

Book Description
The Clayton Brothers' idiosyncratic paintings and constructions have won them acclaim as unique -- if twisted -- visual storytellers. Their art collaborations have been seen in movies such as Monkeybone, music videos for Oasis, and print campaigns for the X Games. The Most Special Day of My Life showcases some of their best projects, including Tim House, a 6' x 8' x 13' church/schoolhouse installment with bizarre portraits of people real and imagined clinging together inside. Designed to be sampled rather than read front to back, this sumptuously illustrated book tours the work, and minds, of two masters of postmodern art.

This is an incredible collection of exremely excellent inspiring art. It is beautifully printed and designed. You can spend hours looking at the pictures and wondering what is going on in the artist's head or just making up your own stories.
Every Fan Of Low Brow Needs this book.......2003-11-14
This book is one of the finest art books I've ever purchased. The printing is excellent, the art is the best collection of the Clayton Brothers work that I've seen. The reading is insightful and well thought out. Even if you have never seen the Rob or Christian's work you still need this book.

Book Description
¡Ah, no!

Terrific tale of immigration and starting over.......2004-06-18
I read Rain of Gold on the recommendation of a friend who taught high school English in northern CA. She said it was on her optional reading list for students and that the hispanic kids who decided to read it, despite its length, all came back to her with glowing reviews - telling how it was the first book they'd ever read that was that long and how they couldn't put it down it was so good. Being a Spanish speaker, with native Spanish speaking students and friends, I was intrigued. Loved the book - simply loved it. So when I saw that the author had continued the story of his family in Trece Sentidos, I had to find out more about their lives and their stories. I was not disappointed. Read the second book in Spanish - though it was written in English. Trece Sentidos feels a bit more long-winded than Rain of Gold. There are times when the grandmother goes on and on and on. But you love the character/s and are willing to forgive. There is some repition of history for those who did not read Rain of Gold, but it's a good refresher too. I highly recommend this book. Loved the photographs too. Thank you, Victor Villasenor, for sharing a wonderful family history! Would love to see the ranch too, and think of it every time I'm visiting family in/around San Diego.
