4 out of 5 stars it's possibly for certain.......2004-06-25

Engaging, quick read in the form of a mystery that tackles some weighty philosophical-religious issues and the timely (and timeless) matter of the need for certainty in a world that refuses to offer any. Proponents of using character witnesses at trials won't be too happy, but E. Loftus fans will howl at this one.

5 out of 5 stars Intellectual, cultural tour de force -ending blew me away!.......2001-11-16

This is a great book for artists, specifically passionate,
cutting-edge artists who loathe the mundane. And it's a
wonderful 'detective' story, with surprise endings. Yes, that's
a plural - it delivers one-two-three K.O.'s right up to the
very end...don't miss the final "Editor's Note," either. I love
a literary roller coaster ride, and this book is one of those, with, as mentioned, a Big Finish.

The book made me want to jump on a plane to Rome,
as well. My mouth watered, thinking of all those
gorgeous Caravaggios I haven't seen. Or at least I'll go
searcing for a "complete works of..." art book with full color repros.

Where has Atl Naess been all my life? Plan to read more, if
I can get my hands on his work.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Who-Done-It for the Discerning Reader.......2001-09-18

Atle Naess tells the fictionalized story of painter Michel Angelo Merisi da Caravaggio (known to us today simply as Caravaggio) using the device of a contemporary cleric's investigation into the events that led up to Caravaggio's exile from Rome: whoring, brawling, and finally a verbal argument that ends in another man's death. Different witnesses give their versions of the painter and his shocking exploits, such as attacking a waiter who serves him improperly cooked asparagus or sitting with a dying prostitute so that he can use her agony as a model for The Death of the Virgin. Finally, we discover the surprising details of Caravaggioýs own death.

Naess, in his "Concluding Unscholarly Comment by the Editor," says:

"I began work on this publication in search of a certain clarity. It was, of course, my interest in the art, ideas and social history of the seventeenth century that prompted it, but if I may be permitted a remark of a private nature: I was driven also by personal need.
"It was the need to describe and comprehend holiness. This could also be expressed as the wise to reconstruct this lost power, which we no longer understand and which thus causes large areas of our history to have become incomprehensible to us" (154, 155).

Doubting Thomas makes perfectly clear our human shortcomings, our inability to attain holiness, but I'm not any clearer, really, about what holiness is. I see that it is NOT collecting sensually appealing, gorgeous artworks that are ostensibly religious in nature; nor it is about the competition of high-ranking churchmen to possess the greatest collection of such art. Caravaggio paints works which inspire some to deep religious feeling, yet utterly fails in his human relationships to attain Christian ideals of self-control, forgiveness, and love. He uses everyone around him as pawns to his art, rejects his family, and sleeps with his models, who are generally prostitutes (but are sometimes young boys). In its quest to comprehend holiness, this novel may serve only to prove in the end that, as the prophet said, "There is none holy, no, not one."

And yet, on the fringes of our perception, there is something pure and holy, something that shines through Caravaggio's art and all the confusion that surrounds our lives. It would be difficult to formulate a simple "theme statement" about this novel after a single reading, as high school teachers often ask students to do, yet Naess does seem to suggest that, as flawed as human beings are, we may be able to create something that points toward the infinite glory of God.

Doubting Thomas was deservedly a best seller in Europe, and I read it with great attention and interest. Nevertheless, I did not I enjoy it in the way one enjoys a simple who-done-it. Doubting Thomas left me disturbed, raising more questions than it answered. I would recommend this thought-provoking book to readers looking for a post-modern, historical detective novel.

"Son of Spellsinger" is the seventh volume in the Spellsinger series, this time with the son of Jon-Tom alongside the two otter cubs of colleague Mudge.

Back cover of book:

Call Him - Spellmaster B

Much to Clothahump the Wizard's distress, ex-hippie Jon-Tom and otherworldly Talea's son Buncan wants to be a questing hero, but not a spellsinger. Instead, he forms a band with Mudge's kids, otters Nocter and Squill, one that creates a wild, unpredictable magic - based on rap!

Then an anteater arrives with rumors about a dangerous legend. Soon the young rappers, aided by a drunk rhino, are off on an odyssey to a fortress where evil sorcerers threaten the world. And where only the unknown power of Buncan's beat can stop the hordes of hideous hybrids.

Son of Spellsinger

The next generation of mayhem and magic begins...

End back cover of book.

Even though at the end of "The Time of the Transference" Mudge had more than two cubs, it is understood he has only two. Also Nocter on the back cover is called Neena throughout the novel yet in the next volume "Chorus Skating" is back to Nocter. Such inconsistencies are unforgivable.

Overall I believe the story would have been more enjoyable had the author stuck with what worked, Jon-Tom and Mudge. Any offspring of the great duo does not seem proper when one is a cheap clone of the parent with the equivalent idiosyncrasies. It is the same brand of humor and problems but different individuals.

Other new characters are likable and the object of the quest is very witty. The nature of otherworldly devices in a magical world continues to amaze but having the rapping offspring tackle the adventure grew tiresome.

Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Great author, okay sequel.......2000-01-30

Don't get me wrong, the Spellsinger series was great and will forever be one of the best fantasy series i've read. So when I heard about the sequel to it, and it was going to be about his son, I got really excited. It was an okay book to be honest. Not spectacular, not completely horrible. Big problems with it though. The idea to make it about rap music seemed a bit contrived, don't get me wrong I love hip-hop, but when reading it the rapping just seemed silly. This book was okay give it a try if you liked the Spellsinger series, maybe one of these days Mr. Foster will write a better sequel (don't get me started on Chorus Skating...._

3 out of 5 stars Plot's fine; rapping very much less so.......1997-10-27

Whilst the plot of the book is perfectly passable, the problem with this book is very simple.

Alan Dean Foster knows, fundamentally, nothing about rap. Whilst in the previous books the musical connection was obviously based on things that he knew about, this attempts to update itself by changing the musical style used from rock and roll to rap. Unfortunately, the attempts to create convincing rap lyrics fall completely flat. This results in a book which continually shoots itself in the foot by juddering to an awkward halt each time this occurs.

For heaven's sake -- I've read better parodies of rap music in Mad magazine..

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A COMPLEX DREDD STORY.......2006-02-23

Final Cut is one of the more complex and multi-layered plots to be found in any of the Dredd books series. If it's even possible, the story is darker and grimmer than even the usual Dredd stories. We open to the brutal scene of a young woman being brutally tortured and killed, with her body tossed into a chemical dump where it will be slowly dissolved. When a construction crew working on the new building of a wealthy and well-connected man named Peat, uncover the remains of the body and several others, Dredd comes in to investigate. Unfortunately, the chemicals have taken their toll and the only remaining clue is a titanium earring that lodged in the skull of the victim, resistant to the chemicals.

Dredd confronts Peat over the discovery of the bodies, as well as an incident that took place earlier in the evening at the opening of his latest building. A popular music star was making an appearance and was the victim of an assassination attempt. Her bodyguards were also in possession of illegal weapons. This eventually draws Dredd into conflict with chief judge Hershey who needs Dredd to tow the line around the influential Mr. Peat. This doesn't sit too well with Dredd as you may imagine. While all of this is going on, Judge Trager, a member of the mysterious, undercover Wally squad, is knee deep in trouble himself. He's fallen in with the Dansky gang who deal in illegal arms sales in Mega-City One. The gang is set to make a major arms purchase as well as buying a mysterious package for a client who the Dansky brothers seem to fear a great deal. Thus it is that we have three plots running throughout the book with Dredd investigating the bodies found in the dump as well as the attempted assassination, and the Wally squad's involvement with the arms dealers. How are they all connected?

What I loved about Final Cut is that the usual sci-fi elements are downplayed. This could easily be a story taking place in present day. It is at its core a gritty, brutal, street crime drama with mysterious murders, influential but shady businessmen, and ruthless gangs. Writer Matthew Smith as composed one of the best Dredd books yet, requiring Dredd to do so much more than just blow the bad guys away. He needs not only his investigative skills but also needs to display some rare diplomacy as well. It was also interesting to a glimpse inside the mysterious Wally Squad as well. These are some very "different" judges than fans are used to seeing.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the kids........2006-01-20

Warning - this book is intended for a far more mature audience than the other books in the series.

The first chapter starts out gritty, with a very detailed gruesome crime being committed. It was a shock at first, as this seemed so different from the other Black Flame Judge Dredd novels. I stuck with it though, and I'm really glad I did.

While Judge Dredd does play a large part in the story, we also get to see what life in the Wally Squad (undercover judges) is really like. This was not a campy adventure, but a dark story, in the vein of Blade Runner, and other more mature futuristic tales. If you are enjoy Blade Runner, you will probably enjoy this book.

A great story, with many twists and turns. This series just keeps getting better.

3 out of 5 stars Rather disappointed.......2007-02-02

I purchased this based on 6 great reviews. I love to cook and am a long-time vegetarian, but I've not found a good Indian cookbook and have little to no experience cooking Indian foods.

Unfortunately, I just haven't had a good experience with the recipes in this book. Most of them seem to use the same set of spices (hence, very similar tastes no matter what you make). I guess the recipes turned out OK, but not a winner. I thought this would allow me to make restaurant-quality Indian food (as it did for another reviewer), but it didn't. Just more fair-quality food. I liked one recipe with spinach and lentils but couldn't find a recipe for Naan, my chipatis didn't poof up like the recipe said they should, another lentil dish was rejected by my kids. You might be more experienced with Indian food and have better luck, but this cookbook was a disappointment for me.

5 out of 5 stars Light, tasty and doable vegetarian Indian food for the masses!.......2006-12-19

I am a vegetarian cookbook junkie, and the more exotic the better. I hesitated before ordering this one, since I already had so many similar books. But I think I have yuan2 (Chinese for "affinity") with this book. Today I was puzzling over what to do with a bunch of long green beans and four Asian eggplants. Sure enough, there's a recipe called "eggplant and green beans" in this book! I never would have thought of putting these two together myself, certainly not Chinese style, but this dish really worked. I guess lots of disparate ingredients meld harmoniously when stewed with tomatoes in the right spices.

Two of the old reliables from this book I make again and again are mung bean curry, which is especially nice here, since mung beans are available everywhere in Taiwan; and carrot salad, with cilantro and peanuts. I plan to include it in this year's Christmas dinner - it is refreshing, delightful - and *simple*! The various halvas in the dessert section look mouthwatering as well.

The success rate of dishes made from this book is 100% so far, so I will certainly continue to try new ones. We're lucky to have an Indian grocery in Taipei, but the ingredients for most recipes are quite simple and straightforward, once you have a stock of the basic spices. One little thing - you may need to get used to new terms for certain ingredients, e.g. "hing" for asafoetida.

The cover is very pretty and perky, and the page design is clean and comfortable, though I feel the redundant listing of ingredients in the outer margin isn't really necessary.

Another thing that endears me to this book is knowing it is the product of American-Indian cooperation, between two friends. No glamour shots of the authors for the book - they look like colleagues you'd like to have coffee with often! (Or maybe masala tea!)

So, those of you who don't eat meat (or even if you do) and like healthy, easy-to-make exotic food on the light side: get this one. (It's really inexpensive besides! What more could you ask for?)

5 out of 5 stars HOORAY!!!.......2005-07-23

Very practical recipes, very thoughtfully-done book. A user-friendly experience all around. Would not hesitate to give as a gift, even to those who are cooking challenged.

Book Description

Many readers wonder what inspires the creative genius of bestselling suspense writer Dean Koontz. Much of the credit must go to Trixie, the golden retriever who has taught him things about life that no human ever could. Trixie shows us how to be happy every moment of the day, except those fleeting moments after a meal when the dish is (temporarily) empty. Dogs know how to work hard and to play even harder. With words of wisdom only a bird dog knows, and beautiful photos to warm your heart, this book will lift your spirits and make your leg shake uncontrollably with pleasure!

Trixie wrote LIFE IS GOOD to support her friends who are service dogs for people with disabilities. She is donating her royalties to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), the national organization that breeds and trains assistance dogs for adults and children with disabilities.

Any dog on any book catches my attention but this book is special. It is full of quality pictures that capture the very essence of the words on the page. The messages in the book are thought-provoking but presented in such a good-humored way that they actually made me laugh. It's nice to see Mr. Koontz has a bright side.

My favorite line is "Life is good when you think you are beautiful." Isn't that so true? Look at dogs, they don't care how they look, they just assume they're adorable. They never have a negative self-image!

I love this book so much that it's propped up next to my bed. It's the one of the first and last things I see everyday.

This book is excellent. It is a must read for anyone who has had a dog they love. Trixie knows what is good about life and her editor does a very good job converting her thoughts to english.

Being a Koontz fan and also a long time Golden owner I had to get this book shortly after it was published in 2004. It is a sweet FUNNY uplifting book and so true to the breed. We had just lost our beloved Golden in September of 2004 and it brought both tears and laughter as I read. We now have another Golden and he brings us joy as Trixie does in her book !I have ordered additional copies for gifts for other dog loving friends.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Fab, but handy.......2006-02-10

This pocket guide to Beatles collectibles is a handy reference for those wishing to value their own collections or add to them. I learned that my copy of Vee Jay's "Introducing the Beatles" album will not be funding my retirement, since it is in fact a counterfeit. The section on U.S. Beatles releases is useful; clear instructions are given for discriminating among the many variations that exist.

The most annoying feature of the guide is a doltish essay by one Chris Nickson. This uninformed commentator goes on about the importance of "George's" "Baby, You're a Rich Man." You don't have to be steeped in Fab Four lore to know that this is a Lennon-McCartney song. How did this error make it through Editorial? It undermines the Guide's credibility. Nickson goes on to archly dismiss most of the Beatles' music. "Get Back" is "not worth the vinyl." Get this guy out of the 2nd edition, if there is one.

The book's other essays are also superfluous. Why include an article about the Moptops' solo careers when the Guide does not cover albums and merchandise from that period? I wish the section on British LPs, allegedly brief due to space constraints, had been expanded; omitting those essays would have freed up a lot of space.

This book, while not masterful, is nevertheless useful for the many of us who don't know whether we own treasures or trash. Buy it, consult its tables of price information, but don't read it.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!.......2007-09-25

I bought this about a year ago because of the airplane on the cover...I decorated my son's room in airplanes and was looking for a mural. I was so impressed with how easy it was to do the airplane, and I was enchanted with the author's other characters, that I also did some of the pond characters over my garden tub, for my son as well! When I get more time, I plan on using other chapters to create murals for my daughter. My mother was so impressed, I am buying her the book as a surprise gift. I highly recommend this book! If you can draw, you can paint these murals!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-08

What a great book! I haven't done any murals yet, but plan to within the month. I imagine it will be relatively easy to do with the guidance of this book. It has great mural ideas, detailed supply lists and recommendations, and it shows how to do some of the smallers elements of each mural step by step. I feel much more confident going into mural painting with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2007-03-08

Lots of great ideas in here, with step-by-step instructions about how they are accomplished. I think one still has to have a little skill beforehand, but it is a great guide.

I liked the way this book gave me lots of ideas and how-to tips, and also left it open to add my own adaptions. I will definitely use some of the projects in my granddaughter's rooms when we redecorate them.

This book did give us some ideas on what to have painted in our daughter's room. We actually took a few ideas from this book and came up with our own mural.

      Book Description

This riveting sequel to My Bloody Life traces Reymundo Sanchez’s struggle to create a “normal” life outside the Latin Kings, one of the nation's most notorious street gangs, and to move beyond his past. Sanchez illustrates how the Latin King motto “once a king, always a king” rings true and details the difficulty and danger of leaving that life behind. Filled with heart-pounding scenes of his backslide into drugs, sex, and violence, Once a King, Always a King recounts how Sanchez wound up behind bars and provides an engrossing firsthand account of how the Latin Kings are run from inside the prison system. Harrowing testaments to Sanchez’s determination to rebuild his life include his efforts to separate his family from gang life and his struggle to adapt to marriage and the corporate world. Despite temptations, nightmares, regressions into violence, and his own internal demons, Sanchez makes an uneasy peace with his new life. This raw, powerful, and brutally honest memoir traces the transformation of an accomplished gangbanger into a responsible citizen.

4 out of 5 stars The gang life has not changed........2007-06-27

I live in the neighborhood and see the same things that the author went through in the youth today. Gang life destroys neighborhoods and familys and it saddens me to know that life continues to get worse for these young confused children that don't have God in their life.

      5 out of 5 stars Reality in Today's World.......2007-06-23

In a world dominated by drugs, sex, and violence Raymundo Sanchez begins to see an exit to the Latin Kings, one of Chicago's most feared Latino Gangs. He knows that to leave the gang will mean taking a three minute head to toe beating by three Latin Kings, something which could easily leave him dead.

Having earned the name "Lil Loco" in the prequel My Bloody Life for his random acts of violence and his alcohol, drug, and sex addictions Sanchez is now faced with the ultimate decision. Leave the Latin Kings once and for all or become more involved and continue his path to self destruction.

After being arrested, Sanchez has to face jail time which allows him to slow down his life and see things from a different perspective. He begins to see the Latin King's original message, to protect the Puerto Rican community, has faded and is now overcome by power and greed. The Latin Kings have turned on each other.

He must deal with their motto, "once a king, always a king." If he leaves the gang life he will always be haunted by his past. Others will always see him as a Latin King even if he's not involved. His life will always be in danger by rival gangsters.

The inability to keep a relationship due to his pimp lifestyle causes him to leave the one person who truly loved him. He must fight nightmares night after night, reliving the moments of death and pain he caused others.

Raymundo Sanchez's journey as he tries to leave the Latin Kings illustrates the struggle of leaving the gang life but in the end it proves well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Watching Humboldt Park from the boat house. .......2006-10-12

While reading this book I felt like I was watching a movie from the boathouse that sits in the middle of Humboldt Park by the "lake"-facing Kedzie St. It took me there. It was really captivating.

5 out of 5 stars very important book.......2006-05-31

As the author of the Chicano gang novel FOREVER MY LADY on Amazon.com, I have to endorse this book. It is so important to see the reality of people living in the Chicano and Latino gang life. It is a group of people often ignored and looked down upon but who have heart and soul and this book helps you understand why they are the way they are. They are misunderstood but nevertheless alive and real. -- Jeff Rivera (Author of FOREVER MY LADY on Amazon.com)
