Book Description
Marc Basset has a well-deserved reputation as a pitiless restaurant critic. When he writes a devastating review of a celebrated restaurant, the chef commits suicide, roasting himself in his own fan-assisted oven, with Basset's review pasted to the door. Suddenly Basset is moved to do something he has never done before: apologize. Startled by the widow's forgiveness and absolution, he feels unexpectedly euphoric. In an effort to maintain this newfound state of bliss, he decides to gorge himself on contrition by apologizing to every person he has ever done wrong.
And that's just the beginning.
After a series of virtuoso expressions of regret, word of Basset's mollifying power spreads, and he is tapped to become Chief Apologist for the United Nations. His job is to travel the globe in his own Gulfstream V private jet, apologizing for everything from colonialism through exploitation to slavery. It is a role that brings him fame, wealth, and access to a lot of very good chocolate. But in a world overdosing on emotion, does Marc Basset really have the stomach to become the sorriest man in history?
Built of delicate layers of heinous crime, forgiveness, and outrageous gastronomy, Jay Rayner's hilarious new novel is an arch comedy of modern appetite and etiquette.

Who's eating crow now!.......2007-04-02
I enjoyed "Eating Crow" more for its absurdity than anything else. After all who could have come up with the notion that there should be a chief apologist to the UN! What was his job? To appease dictators and tyrants around the globe! Talk about laughing out loud, after all who could have dreamed up such a theme?
Spin forward to 2007 and we find the British Government seriously apologizing for the slave trade of centuries ago. Compensation seems next on the list if Archbishop Rowan Williams to be taken seriously. Perhaps the best record of the slave trade is recorded in the Bible - are we to expect now that the Egyptians apologise to the Jews? Perhaps the Christians will apologise for the Crusades? So it seems I was wrong as this notion of a chief apologist is not that far fetched. Couple this with the fact that the UK is the most spied on nation in the world and Jay Rayner is elevated to join the ranks of Orwell and Huxley in proving that the absurd can so easily become a reality!
Different and quite hilarious.......2007-02-13
Definitely different than other books out there with quite a lot of humor. Mostly believable and the food descriptions are intense! I am not usually in to too much description, but this dose was perfect and complete. I would recommend this title to anyone and everyone.
Crying wolf!.......2006-04-18
If this book isn't you say wolf too many times. He gets crazy apologizing and finds himself all wrapped up in making apologies. But will they come to mean nothing?
I enjoyed this book without a doubt. Highly entertaining, lots of wonderful scrumptious food descriptions. However I agree, the book did leave me kind of like is that all?
I look forward to other books by this author and I want to read more about all the chocolate foods!
A delightful foodie frolic.......2006-01-09
I really enjoyed this book. I'm a repressed foodie (with small kids, one doesn't get to actually experience a lot of great restaurants), and the meal descriptions were Ruth Reichl restaurant review worthy. It took a turn I didn't expect plotwise, with the UN business. Very clever and sometimes laugh out loud funny. I would definately look at this writer's next book.
Funny premise and start, but not a strong conclusion.......2005-01-05
This is definitely worth a read. It's short, under 300 pages, and if you have some time to kill, it's light enough to whip through in a few hours. The story and main character (Marc) get off to a very funny start. However, about mid-way through the book, about the time the Marc gets his job as chief apologizer to the world, the humor is harder to find. On the whole, it's completely worth reading though.
A couple of other minor issues that might bug some readers: if you aren't a foodie, the pages long descriptions of individual meals and foods could put you off. They're easy enough to skim through after the first few and after all, the author is a professional food critic so he's writing what he knows. American readers beware, some of the British slang might throw you. And, if there's any serious flaw it's that I didn't find either of Marc's two female love interests to be very believable or complete characters. They seem to just exist in the story for Marc's benefit, and don't stand very well on their own. The author put more effort into describing some of the chocolates in the story than he did development of the girlfriends.
But it's definitely still a funny book and worth reading. I found it a very entertaining balance to some weightier non-fiction I'm struggling through.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely stunning. Could be 1 of the best Trek novels ever written..........2007-03-16
It took me a long time before I attempted to read Prime Directive, but boy am I glad I finally did. I cannot think of any authors' who write in the Trek universe who can come up with a more compelling and creative storyline than this married duo. Examining Starfleet's General Order #1 in such detail is a hefty task to say the least, but here Judith & Gar have really outdone themselves.
Visiting the somewhat primitive world of Talin IV, somehow, some way, an accident involving the Enterprise and her Warp Engines being utilized within the planets atmosphere literally devastates the entire world. Within the blink of an eye, millions of the planets inhabitants are snuffed out, and Starfleets flagship, and the entire bridge crew are forever changed. The ship is almost ruined in the aftermath, and the crew is scattered amongst the many different worlds of the Federation. The many facets of Starfleets Prime Directive are explored and even though this whole situation seems to be the result of an accident and not a purposeful violation of the order, the results are the same. What happens as a result could very easily be considered one of the best Trek novels ever written.
Personally I loved the individual sections of the book that explores in more detail than I remember being in any previous novel (or since) the main characters of the Star Trek universe, namely Scotty, Uhura, Chekhov and Sulu. Of course we also have Kirk, Spock and the Doctor, but we rarely (if ever) have been able to get into the minds of these other main characters nearly as deep as we do here. In particular I enjoyed Sulu & Chekhov's exploits. We see a much more detailed look at the strength of Lt. Uhura and her fierce loyalty to her former crewmates and specifically to Kirk in particular.
Unraveling the mystery behind the destruction of Talin IV is like a murder/mystery written by Agatha Christie--just done in outer space. Spock, as one would imagine, is the Private Detective who finally connects all the dots and even though the outcome was never in any doubt, especially knowing that this story takes place during the Kirk's original 5-year mission, how it all plays out really IS a well orchestrated treat to us fans. How could the Enterprise have made such a critical error, or more importantly, how could Kirk have allowed it to happen? WAS it an accident, or was it ignorance coupled with Kirk's natural tendency towards ignoring Starfleet when he deems it necessary? The final answers to how it all comes together really is a journey that is more than worth taking. Comparing 'Prime Directive' to your average Star Trek novel is kinda like comparing a newspaper clipping to The Bible. One is just way more In Depth than the other. I don't wish to bash on other Trek authors, but this one is so much more than most all the others I have read as to almost render the rest comical. This book is the main reason why I firmly believe Judith & Garfied Reeves-Stevens' to be THE greatest authors working in the Trek universe today. Oh, and if you liked this, you simply MUST read 'Federation'. Outstanding. THIS is the reason why I love to read so much. Kudos to this duo once again.
Kirk the world-killer and the disgrace of the "Enterprise Five".......2006-04-25
In the "Star Trek" universe the Prime Directive is Starfleet's General Order #1, which prohibits interference with the natural development of a primitive society ("primitive" defined as any culture that has not yet developed warp drive). Specifically this means that a primitive culture cannot be exposed to information regarding advanced technology or alien races, including any effort to improve or change the natural development of such societies. There was once a "Star Trek" comic book that had fun enumerating all of the times that Captain James T. Kirk violated the Prime Directive, which basically showed that General Order #1 was a piece of Swiss cheese. However, nothing that ever happened during the original "Star Trek" causes as much problems for Kirk and his crew as what happens in this 1990 novel, and the fact that this violation is unintentional is painfully ironic.
When I first started reading "Prime Directive," I had some questions about the precipitating incident, namely the destruction of Talin IV by the "Enterprise." Part of it was the science involved in what happens when a warp engine ignites in an atmosphere, because even though I am completely gullible when it comes to "Star Trek" physics it seems they already did that in the original series (e.g., "Tomorrow is Yesterday"). Beyond that, I had concerns as to how Federation investigators looking at this tragedy could be fooled as to what really happened, since, it goes without saying, Kirk is not a mass-murdering butcher who would destroy an entire planet. The corollary to this is that once the entire known universe thinks you are a mass-murdering butcher, the truth is hardly going to set you being free.
That being said, what makes "Prime Directive" a must-read "Star Trek" novel is that Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens come up with a reason to send the crew of the "Enterprise" to the four corners of the galaxy. After all, Starfleet's highest law has been broken, its most honored captain is in disgrace, its most celebrated starship in pieces, and the crew scattered throughout the Federation. The narrative that picks up the pieces and brings the crew back to Talin IV, the planet where their careers ended, is pretty compelling. Part One of the novel is the "Aftermath," with Kirk trying to find a corner of the universe in which to try and live a normal life, as are the rest of his bridge crew, now cursed as the "Enterprise Five." Mr. Scott was not on the bridge, so he is still in Starfleet, in charge of the cannibalization of what is left of the "Enterprise." Dr. McCoy has retired and is visiting the moon, Uhura is being held for contempt of court, Sulu is in a bar fight on Rigel VIII when he and Chekov are not flying the only vessel that will take them on, and Spock has also resigned after being busted to an ensign.
Part Two tells the story of "The Last Mission," and what happened on Talin IV, ending with the destruction of both the "Enterprise" and an entire world in the heat of a thousand killing suns, and Scott relieving Kirk of command. Part Three, "Talin," begins with Spock making a shocking request of Sytok, the Vulcan ambassador to the Federation, which sets the stage for the truth being revealed. The key thing here is that the authors do not take an easy way out with this one, and come up with an explanation that plays nicely with the logic of the Prime Directive. In other words, the punch-line here works. There is also a Part Four, and saying its title gives away a bit much, even if where we end up by the final pages of "Prime Directive" is where we expect to be. The strength of this particular "Star Trek" novel is that Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens have the characters down and take full advantage of the opportunity to let the supporting bridge crew members shine in their parts of the tale (e.g., Uhura refusing to back down in front of the judge). No wonder this one originally came out in a hardback edition; it was worthy of being one.
PRIME REVIEW.......2005-11-06
The reason I liked this book so much is because, unlike other fiction based on popular concepts (including Star Wars, Quantum Leap, and anything else spun off from TV or movies), this deals with a pre-existing concept (The Prime Directive), and then proceeds to explain exactly WHY this concept exists.
Much like the Marvel Comics character, The Watcher, who, like Kirk, learned the hard way that species have to develop on their own, and one must never interfere with an alien race before they are ready. In both cases, it led to the utter annihlation of the species.
Kirk, Starfleet's most celebrated Captain, is somewhat of a maverick, playing by his own rules, and openly disobeying several Starfleet regulations if he feels he is justified in doing so. Because Kirk gets results, his discrections are often ignored. However, in Prime Directive, the unthinkable has happened. The entire poulation, not to mention the planet of Talin IV has been completely and utterly wiped out. The planet itself is a smoking, smoldering husk, burned out from a nuclear war that contaminated the entire planet, now known as "Kirk's World", in a shameful reminder of the consequnces of one person's actions. The Prime Directive was violated (and this time it wasn't even intentional), but the importance of it is underscored, as a direct result of the violation of Starfleet's Prime Directive, their number one rule, their "Holy Grail". James T. Kirk is held responsible for the destruction of the planet and its people and is summarily dismissed from Starfleet without even a trial, disgraced by his actions. His Bridge Crew, voluntarily agreeing to the violation of the Prime Directive by following Kirk, are also released from Starfleet in shame. The most famous Ship, The U.S.S. Enterprise is in ruins. Only Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott remains in Starfleet, unable to resign his commission, since his status as Chief Engineer not only places him above the accusations levied against the Bridge crew, but also because only he possesses the knowledge to even stand a chance at retrieving the damaged Ship's warp core without causing further damage.
Now in hiding, the individual former crew members of The Enterprise knows that no matter what else, they must find out what really happened at Talin IV if they are ever going to be able to live with themselves, much less clear their names and reputations.
Every crew member gets their chance to shine in individual and unrelated sub-plots as they journey back to Talin IV in an attempt to discover why this tragedy occurred, and if they are truly at fault for it.
Finally, the former crew meet up from their individual journeys to the planet, and the storyline meshes the characters' journey together as they meet with a Starfleet reluctant to go back to the planet, as they would sooner sweep the whole thing away, but as the mystery of the planet unfolds, it is clear that there is more than meets the eye.
An excellent, gripping tale that details the consequences of the violations of the Prime Directive, and explains the reason why it is in place, in a way that does not over-simplify it. For those that think "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility", this novel demonstrates that sometimes, the most responsible course of action is no course of action. Recommended reading for fans and non-fans alike. No need to be overly familiar with the genre to enjoy this tale.

Great book, for a great game.......2004-12-07
One of the common complaints Trek fans have these days is a total lack of continuity in the source material. Well, 'bout 25 years ago a man named Steve Cole designed a tactical game system around another, alternate Trek universe based solely on the Franz Joseph Star Trek Technical Manual. In this universe, you don't find Cardassians, Borg, or the "different forehead alien culture of the week". What you do find, though, is a rich and diverse history with complete continuity from its very inception. This game provides players with a brand new Trek universe to explore, with lots of well thought out systems, technology, and places to play. If you're one of millions of fans who are sick to death of the mediocrity being served up as Trek these last years, then give this a try...you won't be sorry. Based on the popular GURPS system, the rules can be learned in no time. You'll enjoy the universe, though, once you get into it. The Backdrop? A massive, decade long conflict called The General War, pitting the Federation and their allies (the Gorn, the Kzintis, and the Hydrans) against their old enemies the Klingons, the Romulans, and a group of cat like people called the Lyrans. Full of intrigue, adventure and good old space opera fun, this is a great universe and a great way to learn it. Enjoy!
GPD and the SFU ROCK.......2004-12-06
GPD Rocks. I am not a GURPS player (until now) and find this a fantastic piece of work. I've been playing the SFU's flagship game for 25 years and this is a most welcome product. GPD covers a wide range of material so it cannot go into very great detail but it is just the beginning with an ever growing list of additional products. I'm totally satisfied and look forward to more and more!
Prime Power.......2004-12-06
Gurps Prime Directive is a game about an alternative Star Trek reality. Based on Franz Josephs original Star Trek Technical Manual, Prime Directive expands and defines a reality that has the original series races and also many new ones. Star Trek fans are given a chance to play characters that hail from the UFP, Klingon Empire, Romulan Empire, Tholian Holdfast, and Gorn Confederation as they appeared in the original series. At this point however the timeline deviates from "TREK" and becomes The Star Fleet Universe, which includes new races and Star nations Such as The Hydran Kingdom, The Kzinti Hegemony, The Interstellar Concordium, and The Lyran Clans. The manual gives all the necessary mechanics to play using the GURPS system, including a wealth of racial templates, skills, advantages and disadvantages. Background information allows readers to see how the various Star Empires relate, including maps (which are few and far between for the "TREk" Universe.) It includes rules for converting ships from the Star Fleet Universe to GURPS Space and deck plans for the Free Trader class ship, which is well suited for roleplaying groups. For those players who want to jump into play there are several starting packages for characters and a reasonable list of equipment. As a bonus there are several examples play to alleviate confusion. In summary this product is packed full of good stuff for players interested in a Universe that takes some of the best elements from the original series and blends them in with new concepts creating a vision of the future that is dynamic and action packed. It is well worth the purchase.
Not worth the money.......2004-03-18
I'm a trekkie and a gamer geek so I bought this book almost immediately after hearing about it. The dissapointment I felt reading it was palpable. The opening of the book is a story that is, frankly, dull and fails to really give a Star Trek feel to anyting. See an episode of Star Trek you'll have a better grasp on what it is all about. The story is redone as an adventure idea at the end. Pages 23 - 42 give racial templates which while they have good write ups, really aren't much someone who has seen a bit of Star Trek couldn't come up with. Pages 50 - 99 are a minimal retooling of material in the GURPS Basic set. So about a third of the book is completely worthless if you already play GURPS. Then there's information from other Role Playing Games from the Star Fleet Universe. If you play those games, the information might be useful, but it really isn't useful for GURPS. Pages 142 - 152 are a simple timeline and are some of the few pages that would be actually useful in trying to play a Star Trek role playing game. Pages 154 - 158 require you to own GURPS Space to make sense, and GURPS Space does it better. Pages 159 - 164 are some detailed information of a few ships. After going through it, I highly reccomend just getting GURPS Space along with the basic set and Compendium I. If you want to play a Star Fleet Universe game, just buy one of them. Either choice will get you much better information. Of the 40 or so pages of worthwhile information in this book: 20 minutes of thought will probably give you better ideas than they present. Save your money. This book, with shipping & handling and tax, really is worth less than seven dollars.

Beautiful!.......2007-10-10
The book is very nice. It has a lot of photos. It also tells the story about Frida and Diego. It's the perfect gift. There is also a Spanish version, which I have been unable to locate.
Frida's Fiestas.......2007-07-19
This book is a must for anyone who knows about Frida Kahlo, or for anyone who appreciates the Mexican culture. In fact, it's a great book in and of itself just for the pictures and recipes alone. I am thrilled it's another addition to my Frida Kahlo/Diego Rivera collection. Diego's daughter's recollections of her life with these two greats is fascinating. Who knows? I may even learn to cook as the recipes are festive and inspiring.
Reminiscent of Grandma.......2007-03-16
I loved this book because it was more than just recipes, it had the story as well. The recipes were true and provided with the original ingredients, reminded me of my grandmothers cooking. I would have liked to see a section that described some of the ingredients we don't normally see in our markets in order to know where to look.
This is a party book!.......2007-01-10
I bought this book for my friend for Christmas and had to have one for myself as well! The pictures are beautiful and the recipes are very unique. We are using the book to plan our next fiesta!
Excellent! Interesting! A great gift!.......2006-07-17
I ordered this book to give away as a door prize. When it arrived, I glanced through it, but was so captivated that I sat down and read through the entire book immediately (even though I had/have no plans to ever cook any of the food) -- it was a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of Frida, Diego and others. Then I ordered three more to give as gifts to friends.

Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

This would be a wonderful book for Rockwell's fans BUT the poor quality of the printing and the copies of illustrations made me regret buying it.
It still makes a nice book on the shelf.
Every home needs exposure to Norman Rockwell........2007-05-07
Wonderful. Even my grandkids enjoy this book. The covers were done long before even their parents were born, but the appeal is universal. It's fun when the grandkids ask questions and notice the little social intricacies which made Nornam Rockwell so loved by so many.
Extraordinary!.......2005-09-23
This is real art. These covers are traditional Americana as it was or at least should have been in the America Norman Rockwell so loved. Study each of these works and you'll be rewarded with an innumerable collection of tiny "extras" this master hid in his paintings. This is a great gathering of very fine and highly charming visual stories.
Amazing.......2001-11-28
To say that you can spend hours browsing through this wonderful collection is an understatement. This is a book that can be savored over a lifetime.
It shows the progression of Rockwell's art from his early, almost Victorian style covers, to his most famous illustrations, to his political portraits. It always annoys me that people claim he is an illustrator, not an artist. Simply because these pictures tell a story should not detract from their artistic merit.
This volume has them all. From the beautiful, awkward, girl at the Mirror, Doctor's appointment and countless others that are not as well known, but still great! So many of these paintings allow us to learn more about America (Can you get much more American than Norman Rockwell?). His GI- Willie Gillis is truly everyman during WWII. We seem enjoying a hometown newspaper, on leave, with his comrades, and finally as a student on the GI Bill. So many ideas are timeless. The chronicle of a day in the life of a boy or girl seem to embody childhood. Commuters on a platform captures the rise of suburbia. THe one of a son sitting with his father and dog about to leave for college captures that bittersweet moment on the cusp of adolescence.
The sunlit, yet dusty, Marriage Liscense is generally recognized as art, but others should be too. I hope that with the recent Rockwell exhibets a new generation of Americans will appreciate this wodnerful artist who captured so much of our lives!
This is a great addition to any collection- you will never tire of looking through it!
A Collector's Item.......2000-04-14
If you can only have one Norman Rockwell book, look no further. This is the quintessential Norman Rockwell. You can spend hours and hours looking at the illustrations and still not fully grasp all the subtle nuances - like the cameo paintings within the painting; the relections in the mirror; the advertisements in the folded newspapers; and so on. I have only found one inconsistency. In "The Clock Mender" some areas in the painting make an abrupt departure from his trademark quasi-realistic style. It reminds me of Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon". Was Rockwell cleverly introducing "Surrealism" into this particular painting, in an inverted Salvador Dali sort of way? Or was the original painting simply damaged and then retouched by someone else? It would make delightful reading if Mr Finch, or anyone else, could offer an explanation.

Book Description
Shows Rockwell's position within American artistic and social traditions as the premier painter of home-and-hearth America... Filled with the warmth of people interacting with people, which is so strangely absent in the contemporaneous work of, say, Edward Hopper. Rich with background information about the movements and style that affected Rockwell.

WORKS OF TIMELESS VALUES AND TOLERANCE.......2004-02-28
Perhaps more than any other contemporary artist Norman Rockwell enjoys popular mass appeal with his warm scenes of Americana. His Saturday Evening Post covers, which he created for more than four decades, enchanted a generation, as he painted his particular visions of daily life.
His work bespeaks timeless values and tolerance, so much so that one of his ads was borrowed by an AIDS activist group to promote safe-sex awareness. What would Rockwell himself have thought of this? His son, Tom, said, "One of the things my father was associated with was tolerance. So I think it's fairly easy to know what he would have said."
Norman Rockwell by Montgomery.......2004-01-23
The work shows important illustrations for the Saturday Evening
Post, his wedding and the Art Director's Club. Famous illustrations; such as, the New Tavern Sign are depicted. An
illustration of "A Family Tree" is presented in full color
together with other famous renditions of the artist. The Spirit
of Education and the Airplane Trip are presented in full color.
These were famous presentations in the Saturday Evening Post of
the 1930s. There is a famous Christmas illustration from 1929
and the "Dreams of Chivalry". The famous "Golden Rule" is
presented together with "The Prom Dress" and "The Outing".
This is an important work for ownership by anyone interested
in the modern artwork of the previous century.
Intersting, fascinating and joyful........2000-05-03
I thought this book of Norman Rockwell's work was a fascinatining look into the typical/almost idealistic life of everyday embarrassing/comical/poignant situations which do commonly occur. The picture I enjoyed the most was "The Gossips" where upon I could imagine the tale behind the laughter and enjoy looking at the different facial expressions and that there was such a great twist to the tale. Thank you for such a great book!.
Small, but packed, well written. Defines and defends........1999-06-14
The book is small, but the illustrations still are reproduced extremely well. The essay alone is worth every penny. If you feel uneasy about your love for the work of Norman Rockwell, this book will give you the courage to like what you really like, without any more appologies. Buy it, read it, enjoy. You will, I guarantee.

A Reigning Queen of Writers.......2006-06-23
In this 1990 volume of 48 pages, you will read in lyrical verse everything you need to know about oppression of Black people, by one of our finest writers. Angelou herself, now 78, has risen above bigotry, but hasn't, nor shouldn't, forget about it. It is the black person's legacy ("These Yet to Be United States") and the white person's shame. Author of the highly-acclaimed autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," Angelou sings about slave days, "take me on, Virginia, loose your turban of flowers" and in "The Grandmothers" speaks the title words, "I shall not be moved," a peon to the bravery of the black woman and the cruelty she has endured since captivity. This book should be read by every schoolteacher to her Ghetto children.

I Shall Not Be Moved by Maya Angelou
Is a collection of forty-eight pages of poems. I know little of Maya. Even the small exposure I have had to a few of her writings leaves me wanting to know more about what she is saying. I found this book of poems a new experience not only to feel her glowing smile and personality while feeling the movement of her lyrics, but also to try and see through her eyes items of importance. In her poem Me and My Work, I found I need to understand more than I already do. The last couple lines are.....
"Yet the only thing I really don't need
is strangers' sympathy.
That's someone else's word for caring."
Great Poetry, Angelou is by far the best Poet alive.......1997-12-14
I have read every poem in this collection at least 50 times, no exateration, and they are great. One of these poems, Equailty, I have used for a high school poetry thesis, I made an "A". Even though this collection is from 1990 it is still update!

I Shall Not be Moved.......2007-07-31
The Author did well at identifying and detailing the historical accounts and events that gave way to today's separatism in Christian Worship. As an Afro American member of a predominately white church, the book substantiated the reverse separatism I experience Sunday after Sunday. The book was a spiritual inspiration to Love as Christ Loves and to allow that love to permeate beyond tradition, ethnicity, or ritualism. Most importantly, the book is a call for Unity in Worship, a call to move beyond the norm or status quo.
Timely message.......2007-07-27
Dr. Byrd challenges the segregated church in America as deviant to the model of the church presented in the New Testament. If his challenge were fully accepted, the pervasive racism in our society would be eradicated beginning within the churches, which is where so much social change has originated. The author writes not only out of an academic background of teaching at a Christian university, but out of his experience as a pastor of a black church in the inner city. It is this that makes his brief but penetrating book so valuable. He is not writing as a theorist but as a practitioner.
Grassroots Reconciliation by the Church.......2007-07-19
The book is written in simple, but convinving prose, with some easily managed jargon, that advocates the church, with its phenomenal reach and influence, become the ground floor of racial reconciliation in America. The author suggests that if the Church can overcome its traditional role as safe haven for family traditions and religious customs, it can increase its relevance and leadership influence by becoming social forerunners of racial harmony. I agree that the church has a significant responsibilty to bridge differences in our society and racial differences are chief among those that can and should be championed by the church.
