Both the compliments and criticisms of this book are desreved. Rosenberg continues to give us compelling characters that draw us in. Further, he continues to develope his world in unexpected ways. This book was truly a fun read.

That said. The series has lost its original feel. At this point we are rather disconnected from the original characters and the original idea of the series. Also, there are plot lines from earlier in the series that have been dropped or at least not fully handled. I wait patiently to see if those ideas are brought up again only because the characters now are compelling in their own way but I long for that connection that Rosenberg's fictional world once had to our own.

Searching for Mister Good Baron.......2004-05-08

Not Quite Scaramouche (2001) is the ninth fantasy novel in the Guardians of the Flame series, following Not Exactly the Three Musketeers. In the previous volume, Baroness Elanee instigated a plot to lure Ellegon into a trap, but Pirojil, Kethol, Durine and Erenor foiled the setup. However, Durine and a medium sized brown dragon were killed and Erenor required a healing draught for his slit throat. Although her treasonous plot misfired, Elanee herself survived until Ellegon and Pirojil executed the death warrant on her. Her son Miron disappeared in the confusion.

In this novel, Emperor Thomen calls Parliament into session and Jason Cullinane is late. In addition, Henrad the wizard is beginning to feel the presence of another wizard in the castle. Walter Slovotsky, the new Imperial Proctor, decides to kill two birds with one stone and sends Pirojil, Kethol and Erenor to Barony Cullinane.

Jason delays to the last minute before leaving for Parliament and then finds himself delayed by assassins. Kethol first detects something scaring the wildlife and he, Pirojil and Ahira Bandylegs go into the woods to check out the situation. They find an assassin with two crossbows, one of which gets Ahira in the thigh and the other scrapes Kethol's ear.

Pirojil takes the party off the Royal road and occupies a nearby farmhouse. That evening, Kethol and Ahira take a shortcut through the woods to Dernal's Ford and Pirojil and Erenor head off through the rain on the Royal road to Belneten's Spring. Pirojil and Erenor find more assassins waiting for them, but the other party find Imperial troopers guarding a landing zone for Ellegon. The next day, Jason and his close associates ride to Parliament in style, way above any possible assassins on the ground.

In this story, Miron returns to Biemestren through the sponsorship of Baron Tyrnael. General Treseen recommends that Miron be installed as the new baron and Parliament tends to agree. Walter delays the decision, hoping for an alternative. Leria provides a means of searching for the long gone Forinel, heir presumptive to the barony, and Pirojil, Kethol, Erenor and Leria fly off of Ellegon to search for the heir.

This story twists and turns like a snake with its head cut off. Some things remain the same, of course, such as Kethol dashing heroically after the assassin and Jason standing up on Ellegon as they fly along. Naturally, the barons are always plotting something and the Imperial governors in the Holt baronies are playing their own game.

Recommended for Rosenberg fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of high adventure and intrigue with more than a touch of cynicism.

Not Really the Guardians Anymore.......2003-09-17

While still witty and entertaining, this installment fails to capture the spirit and flavor of the original three. Gone is the wonder of people from a mundane, technological world trapped in a world of dragons, miracles, and arcane magic. Also, gone is the righteousness of Karl Cullinane & Crew's original goals.
Not only have these elements been completely left out in favor of a plot involving the characters in a convoluted political morass, Rosenberg has left several loose ends untied.

For instance, what happened with the conflict with the wizard that originally brought them to this place? And the sword destined for Jason Cullinane?.Maybe it's been so long since the original trilogy, even the author has forgotten what was happening.

Not Quite What I Had In Mind.......2002-12-15

For many years Mr. Rosenberg has entertained his readers with fantastic adventure and delights from his mythic land. Anyone who has ever "thrown some dice" from the comfort of their den or basement was instantly and (like me) permanently drawn into the idea of awakening in the "game realm." I loved the earliest works for this very detail. However, as the series progressed, the plot line (which originally drew me so close) regressed into an average fantasy tale. By this book publication, I hardly recognize the thrill from the original four (or so) books. Mr. Rosenberg has within him the creative fire to return his characters (and us, the audience) to the world we first met in "The Sleeping Dragon;" but it is completely up to him to rejuvinate the characters and myriad plot-lines to their once captivating and imaginative status. In short, bring restore the "guardians" to their original and best task, the task we all long to see and do - adventuring!

In Not Quite Scaramouche, Kethol, Pirojil, and the mildly competent and untrustworthy wizard, Erenor, are charged first with bodyguarding characters that readers of previous Guardians of the Flame books will remember fondly, and new readers will surely enjoy. Naturally, things don't go as planned as our heroes end up having to flee into the countryside to attempt to recover a missing heir. This is a great read and very entertaining.

Too many books written for people interested in starting their own business are written by professional writers who have no conception of just how deeply one's determination must be if they are to succeed. This book is not one of those.
Zachary Schat has done a great job explaining the pitfalls and rewards of owning your own bakery. I re-lived my early days in starting my bakery, Billy Boy's, that one day would venture before the world as Billy Bob's Pot Pies fast food franchise.
Although this book concentrates on his experience in bread-baking, it is general enough that it can be used in any sort of bakery and many deli's and restaurants.

I have worked in two bakeries and have decorated cakes professionally for over 8 years. This book is fabulous and very generous for Schat to share - it really gives you an inside look into the heart of a bakery... what it takes to run one well.

Having been an equine bodywork practioner in So. Cal for over a decade, I have looked at many massage books. This book is by far the most comprehensive as far as anatomy and function of the horse. One word of caution, be careful when performing the stretches he demonstrates in the book, not always the best human biomechanics are used!

Within the last year my partner and I started a custom home decor sewing business. We have found this book indispensible as a guide in dealing with customers, and in considering what is involved in giving an estimate, and in creating window treatments, slipcovers, etc to their satisfaction. Following the advice in this book has helped us avoid problems we might otherwise not have considered. Very practical help.

This book does help you avoid mistakes and make more profit.......2000-04-24

After reading the reviews and checking this book out of my library, I bought my own copy. I use it as a reference for planning jobs, measuring, marketing, advertising ideas, what to include in the contract, etc. It's indespensible to my business. Many mistakes that you can make that eat up your profit are pointed out and you are shown how to avoid them before they occur (and shown how to clean up the mess, after they occur). Mistakes and the time they take to correct (and the credibility you lose) are what eats a small business alive. It doesn't matter if you caused the error, or the workroom, or the installer caused the error or mismeasurement, you still have to fix it, and generally with the designer paying for it. $39.99 is a low price to pay for the quantity of information in this book. As for the slightly negative review below, you have to try to close the sale. If you don't try and try again, you walk away with out a sale. I find you have to be slightly aggressive to raise your closing ratio. I used to wait and wait for customers to call me back and give me the sale - it just doesn't happen.

I got this book through my college course as a supplemental text and it was as valuable to me as anything I learned at college (I don't want to offend my instructors, but, they had nothing over this book). It actually teaches you how to get out there and get the interior design project, how to compete with all types of competitors, how to avoid the many mistakes that eat up your profits, it is a window treatment bible. I know I would have gave up and quit had I not started using some of the low-cost marketing and customer psychology ideas. It's the difference in completely wasting your time on "free" estimates. Now, I'm turning each appointment into a "game" that I am winning and really having fun with my business.

Section on window treatments great, rest forgettable........2000-03-25

Window tx advice is terrific, especially specs for hard tx's. But much of the general info is too basic, such as color and elements of design. A text book or two is needed for these topics. Regarding the advice on customer relations, it is just too pushy for me. Suggested answers to "I have to think about it" are "Why think about it?" and "If you are happy with what you picked out... let's go for it! Why put it off!" Or in answer to, "I have to discuss this with my spouse." say "What do you need to discuss with your husband/wife?" or "Would you like me to wait, while you call him/her?" People I know shy away from decorators for just this reason. Consider this book solely for the window tx's, there are better books regarding practical aspects such as, "A Handbook for Interior Designers", by Jenny Gibbs.

Wow! This is a life saver for interior design professionals. I can't thank Touch of Design enough. I figure that Linda has saved me thousands of dollars and much frustration in mistakes I would have easily made had I not read the book. Window treatments are heavily covered. Great Artwork for Students of Film design or Star Wars Fans.......2002-05-20

I just got a great deal on this Portfolio today. I had never seen it before, in stores or even online. But I saw it at a store at a very low price so I picked it up. The packaging was great! It was in a beautiful chrome box. I wasn't disappointed at the contents either.

Inside are the twenty prints most of them are of Naboo and the Gungon's in particular. There was only one print of Darth Maul, which was a bit disappointing, but the art work is great. Although I had seen some of these pintings in the Art of Star Wars Episode I book, it was great to see them as larger prints. The size of the prints is "About" 24 inches wide by 12 inches tall give or take an inch, or two.

If you are a Star Wars Fan and appreciate the art, design and imagination that went into the Star Wars movies pick this up.

I got this over a year ago and found the artwork stunning.

Thinking of printing with your own printer? Chances are that even if you can find some Star Wars artwork on the Internet, the printouts won't last. For example, using color ink-jets and even on special paper... after one year, the color degrades...

Today, after a year, the illustrations still look that way and there is no fading of colors at all. This is truly a collectable.

This one is worth keeping if you love Star Wars artwork and the pricing at Amazon is simply a "steal".

this things is nice especially at this price its definetly one of my favorite star wars related items. i must say i did not enjoy the movie as much as i would have liked, however i do love star wars in general. this collection of pre-production sketches are really nice to look at. they all come printed on high quality stock and coated with a nice glossy finish. they people who put this toegther really took time rather than just throwing a episode one logo on it like most companies did. this is truly a great gift for the star wars enthusiast. lastly the packaging is excellent and comes in a nice metal tin which completes the entire package and makes this a great collectible.

I would not recommend this book - it is trite and uninteresting. I did not learning anything new about the jewish indian experience

Not as Culturally intriguing as expected.......2004-08-30

This book was definitely a quick read and very interesting as the other reviewers have stated. The only "issue" I had with this book is that there were a bit too many sensual allusions that seemed were meant to appeal to a trash novel reader. I expected this book to speak of much more "Bene-Israel" traditions but instead it addressed mostly the rebellion of the writer against tradition and not much specifics on the traditions.
I do give this book 4 stars though since it encaptured me immensely but not 5 stars since I expected it to be more wholesome.

great coming of age story.......2004-06-01

I found Carmit Delman's memoir fascinating. Her story was remarkable, how she grew up in the modern world with her family's culture and background several centuries behind. It is very appropriate for mothers of teens, gives you an eye to the struggles they face as they try to reconcile their life with yours.

Every author wishes to touch the emotions of their readers, Ms Delman does just that in "Burnt Bread and Chutney." At first, I felt embarrassed that a man is reading something meant for WOMEN! But pages later, I found myself amused and at times angered, wishing I could help some of the players within. I found I actually "could not put this book down" until I found out what happened!
As ROOTS and GHANDI touched me, so did this book - it too, would make a great movie! (Hey Mr. Spielberg, if you liked The Color Purple, you'll love this!) This book will turn your vision onto a side of life that many are unaware - it will touch your soul....and it will touch your heart.

Engrossing read!.......2003-02-07

Carmit Delman has truly outdone herself in this wonderful account of her life. The juxtaposition of her life with that of her grandmother, led by quotes from "Nana-bai's" diary was unique and kept me so intrigued that I finished the book in 2 days. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to hear more from Carmit!
