Farewell to Matyora is Grand!.......2003-03-25
Valentin Rasputin's "Farewell to Matyora" is an outstanding work of Russian literature that I highly recommend. Of course, such novels are better read in their native language, but for those of us who don't read Russian (I fortunately do!), this novel may be one of the only English-language translations available and, as such, is a great boon.
Valentin Rasputin has been called one of the most important voices of the post-Stalin era of Soviet literature. Indeed, it has been compared to Solzhenitsyn's masterpieces "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch" and "Matyora's Home." One of Rasputin's shining graces is that he openly exposes the inward charms of Russian character and culture.
The story itself is about the destruction of a village to make way for a Soviet hydroelectric dam project. The dynamics between the older and younger members of the village and their feelings about their imminent departure from a place that has been home to them their whole lives forms the central conflict and interest of the novel. At the same time, the author reveals some of the deep-seated values about the relationship between man and nature that are key to Russian culture.
The blurbs on the back of the novel had a statement that I wanted to share:
"A haunting story with a heartfelt theme, `Farwell to Matyora' is a passionate plea for humanity and an eloquent cry for a return to an organic life."
My strongest criticism of the novel is that the translator in many places seemed to come up short with ways to adequately portray the nuance and charm that are some of Rasputin's strongest charms in his native Russian. In many places the English translation did a very poor job of conveying the Russian meaning. I compared the Russian original to the English translation several times throughout the novel. I feel that the translator simply wasn't up to the task although I certainly don't think I could do a better one. Translation is an art, and, at that, a fickle one.
One of my favorite little phrases that the translator decided to keep was "Japanese Gods," which is a euphemism for cursing in Russian that a charming old codger of a character frequently repeats in his efforts to keep from actually cursing around another character that he considers is a "lady."
Read "Farewell to Matyora" because it's a charming novel for a lover of Russian literature. I highly recommend it.

Harry Potter and Slayers were two factors that probably went into this Korean manga. Creator Hee-Joon Son came up with a strange world where the realm of demons crosses over with the human one. But before most young demons can, they have to go to school!
It starts out with Sang, a young energetic redhead who really seems teamed to enter into Hades, the school for up and coming demon teens. Her personal mission, for reasons to be explained later on, is to gain access to the school and locate a special ring. The ring itself is currently in the possession of Notra, a scantily-clad succubus who is supposedly engaged to the actual prince of Hell, and was given the ring as an engagement present.
In order to get in the school, Sang runs into a group of kids playing hookie. It's Dev the demon, Mordicus the vampire, Pannus the mummy, and Lukan the werewolf. Sang asks for Mordicus to bite her, and she "temporarily" gets vampire fangs to make herself look like a student at the demon school. However, some humans from a religious guild come looking for the ring too, and slash off a few of the students to get it. But, the seemingly vanquished monsters come back to life, only more powerful(sorta like Saiyans). Sang and the others team up to stop them from gaining the ring and having the gates of Hell at their command.
Phantasy Degree(or just PHD)is developing into a great action fantasy so far. It's got great comedy mixed in with action that the typical Yu Yu Hakusho fan would like.

Hilarious, A young girl searching for the demon school hades meets up with some demon dropouts (a werewolf as friendly as a squirrel, a weak demon, a pathetic mummy, and a vampire) and she convinces them to give her a tour of their school. One small problem, she has to be a demon to go to their school. Once that problem is solved by having the vampire bite her, a tour is given to Sang, who runs away when threatened by a bunch of demon bullies. Yet there seems to be more to this girl then meets the eye, is Sang really a powerful scorceress? Honestly I don't know, so we'll all just have to wait and see don't we? *pouts* I hate waiting.

The only series of books that I spend time searching for........2000-06-10
I loved this book. Where the first book introduces you to the main character and hints at the atrocities that are happening around him, this book sinks under your skin and hooks you. I couldn't stop reading. I had to know what fate our poor planet was in for. Gerrold always makes his characters touchable, but in A Day for Damnation you find yourself wondering about those characters even after they are worm food. So much goes on page after page that I had to go back and read it again just to make sure I didn't miss any of the subtle plots. You just know it's going to pop up on you in the next novel. I've recommended it to all my science fiction reading friends and family. And I still am after reading it 8 years ago.

I bought this book with the mini-Zojirushi and it's a good combo. Each recipe has measurement for 3 different loaf sizes: one, one-and-a-half, and 2 pound loaves. The mini-Zo uses the one pound recipes. The Herb Bread recipe is fabulous. They include good tips to help you get the best results out of your machine.

The cookbook is lovely...I already had the original edition...and this new edition allows for our now larger 4-cups-of-flour 2-lb. loaves....but with all the same wonderful recipes as in the original! After using the original edition....I gave away all(and that was many!) my other bread machine books. I also bought the new edition for my cousin, as she always loved my recipes from the original edition. And, as always, Amazon.com is the best! Cracking Cook Book for Bread.......2007-05-14
I've used the book to make several types of bread. It is exactly what it says it is, and provides exactly what it says it does. I can't wait to try out some of the more exotic Swedish, Irish, and German breads. Oh yeah. I already made the German bread. It tasted like they said it would and rose better than they said. Wonderful stuff. Recommended.

I have not had a "bad" loaf of bread using recipes from Bread Machine Magic. Dede's Buttermilk bread on page 18 has terrific texture and taste. The tomato bread is wonderful ... and so is every other one of the many I've tried. You won't be disappointed if you purchase this book. I give it for gifts to those who have bread machines.

The author lays out in plain english and easy to understand stories and terms, what happens to pets, just like people, when they pass away.
Using a combination of quotes from scripture, coupled with near death experiences & descriptions, she logically paints a very vivid picture of what happens to our friends when we lose them. Stories from both sources blend well and compliment each other to provide a good description of what awaits our pets.
Contrary to worst case scenarios, their souls actually are fine and waiting to meet us when we pass away.

A Wonderful, Scripture-Based Book; I Highly Recommend It.......2007-05-19
I enjoyed reading this; I only wish that I would have known about it around the time that I had to say goodbye to my beloved and favorite cat. This book gave me great comfort, new Spiritual insights and confirmed some of what I thought were "my ideas" that certain Scriptures actually meant. I also purchased the companion book, "Animal Prayer Guide." I Praise the Lord that I will be reunited with my beloved furkids when the Lord takes me home. If anybody has any doubts about the destiny of their dear pets' souls, this book is a "must read" and will surely put any and all of those doubts to rest.

Poignant, Admirable, Understated Portrait of a Sensational Place and Time.......2006-09-21
Rarely one reads a book that causes the reader to feel love for its author. I had that experience reading "Ever Is a Long Time." W. Ralph Eubanks' memoir depicts the struggles white supremacy thrust upon him and his family, from his white grandfather, who married a black woman, on down to his own children, whom he must introduce to their father's Mississippi.
Mississippi in the 1950s and 60s -- one imagines lynchings, injustice, heroism, sacrifice, history writ in blood.
Eubanks' memoir, though, is suprising in its quite and restraint. Eubanks's childhood was, in many ways, "idyllic," he reports. His parents were pillars of the community. He grew up on an eighty acre farm. He went fishing and climbed trees.
White supremacy, though, was an unavoidable evil. His father, a college educated professional, was denied simple toilet facilities at his work place. The family did not pave their driveway, so that if an uninvited guest brought trouble, the crunch of gravel would announce his presence. Eubanks' white grandfather's photograph was kept in the closet, lest it rouse questions, and trouble.
Eubanks grew up, and moved away. His sons' questions about Mississippi caused him to go back. In going back, he investigated the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, a state-sponsored spying agency that kept records of 87,000 of Mississippi's just over two million citizens. Its goal was to thwart civil rights workers and federal integration efforts. Eubanks' parents were included on that list of names.
Eubanks meets with a former Klan member, so torn by his own membership in that evil society that he breaks into tears after their meeting. Eubanks also meets with an unrepetent member of the MSC. Eubanks discovers that people he knew, liked, and trusted, including African Americans, were informants.
It was Eubanks' voice that was most attractive for me in this work. I never thought I'd read a memoir of life in the Jim Crow South, written by a black man, that was so affectionate, and so forgiving, of that South, while expressing appropriate rage and grief.
Eubanks comes through strongly as a very decent man. His book caused me to feel great respect and affection for his father.
It was a very worthy experience to encounter simple human goodness in a memoir of such terrible wrong.
Eubanks is to be thanked for this work.
Fascinating read.......2004-06-11
Eubank's autobiography is fascinating. The segues between his childhood, his investigation into the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, his trip back to Mount Olive and the historical pieces about the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi are sometimes missing or confusing. I also caught a couple editorial mistakes (duplicate words or funny gramatical stuff) that should have been caught by the editor.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading the book and feel I am coming away from it having learned a great deal about a time and place in history I am personally quite removed from. I read it just after having heard the NPR All Things Considered 5 part piece on the Brown vs. Board of Education decission so Eubank's memoir provided an interesting counterpoint.
Positive and Compassionate.......2004-04-30
This is an excellent memoir. It combines memories of a childhood in Mount Olive, Mississippi, with current historical research concerning the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Mr. Eubanks is now Director of Publications for the Library of Congress. His account of three years spent trying to reconcile his recollections of growing up in Mississippi with the stark reality of the history of that era makes for great reading. Mr. Eubanks final synthesis is both positive and compassionate. This is a book that every Mississippian who lived through that era should enjoy.
A life examined is worth living.......2003-09-19
First, I am a native Mississippian who has lived out of the South for about 10 years. Coincidently, I went to Ole Miss and lived in the same dorm as the author but a year earlier. I did not know Mr. Eubanks but may have had classes with him. Ever is a Long Time is a great look back on activities of both sides of the civil rights movement. The Mississippi Sovereignty Commission spied on all citizens of the state and had 87,000 names in its files including Mr. Eubanks' parents. I have found the names of parents of several very good friends; Parents who were on both sides of the segregation question. It is a troubling story for a Mississippian to read and has led to phone calls and extended discussions with old friends. It has also increased my awareness of the times, our abilities to do mindless things, and to find the better way. There are some poignant interviews with past Sovereignty officials, a past member of the KKK, as well as leaders of the civil rights movement. These wonderfully display the frailty of humans, the need to cope, the darker side of man, and the ability to change. The passages about his children that open and close the work are among my favorites. The book is an honest, worthwhile read about cultural changes and the history of yesterday. (My copy did not have any pictures beyond the cover). Mississippi carries a brutal stigma regarding racial history. My time in other parts of the country have convinced me that the emotions of the 50's and 60's were not limited to Mississippi but rather widely held across the country. Mississippi, like other southern states, got the label and historical coverage and will always carry the stigma. It is a fading stigma that should have been widely shared across our healing nation. My heart gives it 5 stars, but objectivity demands 4 stars.
