Amaryllis' sister makes impulsive decisions that end up nearly costing her her life in this readable novel set in the western part of the United States. An unsuspected twist near the end of the novel keeps the pages swiftly turning until our tenacious heroine ultimately solves this very personal and poignant mystery.

Had the potential, all the elements to be a good story, but the outline falls apart as you read on. Plot is implausible. This is a vulgur story, tormenting and sad because it's discussion of serial rape and not a "mystery". Seems the author had a finale she was shooting for and the plausibility of the actions that lead up to it are of secondary importance. Is she trying to be Patricia Cornwell?
Good First Novel.......2006-07-06
"Forcing Amaryllis" is Louise Ure's first novel and it's a good start. Many people consider this one of the best crime/mystery debuts of 2005. It was recently nominated for a Shamus award for best first novel, and may get nominated for some other awards soon.
I enjoyed this book, but it isn't perfect. The major problem I had was with the plotting. This book is REALLY slow in the middle, and doesn't really pick up until the last 100 pages or so. This book also contains very little suspense generally (until the very end). I also had some minor problems with the main character, who was likable but too angst-ridden for my tastes.
Despite these flaws, this book is very well written overall. I very much enjoyed the descriptions of life in the Southwest, and I thought the trial at the end was very well handled. I therefore look foward to future books from this writer.
Writing Buddy Swoons.......2005-08-30
I, like some others, have to say up front that I know Louise personally from a writing group. While I never got to hear the ending during my time in the group, she had me hooked immediately. Louise really hits the mark and all the well-derserved accolades contain no hype. No lulls in this read. It's delightfuly scary and wonderfully clever. I visited Tuscon for the first time last January and since reading her book, I feel like I have lived there. This book will be gifted to many appreciative friends.
New Star on The Horizon.......2005-08-25
Move over, Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich. There's a new girl in town.
Louise Ure's "Forcing Amaryllis" is a hot Tucson read from beginning to end. Vivid language evokes the true essence of the Southern Arizona experience while drawing the reader into the story with a strangle-hold. Good thing it's a fast read because it was hard to put down.
Where's the next one? Quick, I need it NOW!

Every fantasy readers fantasy. To be sweapt from this old boring world to another fantasy world filled with powers, beautiful women and a great war against evil powers too terrible to behold.
By taking men of our world and placing them into a fantastic world puts the reader in the box seat of all his/her escapist fantacies.
Well worth the read. Unfortunately out of print, and needs and third book that was never written!

Take her twist on the decadent Chocolate Guinness Cake for example: "I wanted to make a cream cheese frosting to echo the pale head that sits on top of a glass of stout. It's unconventional to add cream but it makes it frothier and lighter which I regard as aesthetically and gastronomically desirable." Who can argue? The cake is to die for. So next time you need to prepare a dinner party let the goddess be your guide, and remember: Keep the preparation simple, use easily available ingredients, and take time to enjoy your guests and your meal. Cold curdled vomit.......2007-10-04
Charly and his wife, Nigella, have acheived royalty here in the UK.
Lucky for us, she was raised in the shires on a diet of liver and cows milk. This has fortunately given her a fat lip and her jaw line is reported to be bigger then her shoulder blades.
She ransacks the refridgerator every night for bits of raw meat to feast on and feeds her husband homemade donuts which he endlessly vomits over time and time again.
So expect only the best from this beautiful woman. She certainly deserves his expertiZe in making everyone suffer like Charly's father, an isreali expert victorious in something or other.

Review for the baking recipes.......2007-05-25
I have all but one of Nigella's cookbooks and this is my favorite. Since I bake rather than cook a lot this review focuses on the baking recipes. After having made a lot of the recipes from this book and her others I have been disappointed more than I thought I would be. Some of the recipes turn out very dry. But this book offers a unique layout by feast and/or holiday and some good, potentially great recipes if they were just tweaked or reworked a little- like the Chocolate Truffle Cake, Lemon Meringue Cake and Chocolate Gingerbread. The only problems are that some of the recipes are not exact enough or have some issues. For instance, with the truffle cake some people complained that the thin layer of cocoa sifted on top made them choke, but the cake and meringue crust were a hit. Also, she does not mention in this recipe that if you do not slowly add a little of the melted chocoalte to the cream them mix the rest in you can get little grainy chocolate pieces rather than a smooth base. The lemon meringue cake is also beautiful, but I would recommend just doing meringue disks, cream and curd and not the cake part since it is SO DRY. The chocolate gingerbread is utter bliss though. The pictures are utterly amazing and the stories behind them are fun to read.I also liked the way the book is set up kinda by holiday rather than the traditional appetizers, main course, desserts, etc. here little background jaunts over where she found or came up with the recipes is a pleasure to read and she is very descriptive in a very sensual way. For some this may be a little tiring. Another plus, this is a big cookbook with lots of recipes andd color pics, which is just great. It's a beautiful cookbook with fun, vibrant, sensual dishes. Overall, I'd recommend this book as her best work so far. If you are a some what experienced home baker able to see some minor flaws in recipes and be creative in re-working the recipes and enjoy being inspired by dishes I'd recommend picking this up.

I love her books and would highly recommend each of them. I have three of her books and use Domestic Goddess the most, but I think this new one might be used plenty. I love reading them and keep them by my bedside. she is such a great writer besides giving all kinds of great tips and recipes.
Nigella thinks up the best recipes for both sides of the pond.......2007-03-14
I love her holiday recipes...a mix of English and American customs. Nice to see someone in Europe celebrating American delights such as the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner along with pumpkins, cranberries, maple syrup, and other native food items of North America.
One let down was the recipe for the old fashioned chocolate cake. While it looked yummy when I baked it, it came out a little dry. Was worried about that when I noticed the very thick batter. Guess I will have to experiment with the recipe a little more...it was easy to make, though.
Favorite Cookbook.......2007-02-25
This cookbook has many great recipes! I've made a lot of the dishes and everyone thinks I'm a gourmet cook, I guess I really just pick the best cookbooks. I have Forever Summer and I'm buying her other two books, they have so many recipes with normal foods, no wacky ingredients. You really can cook for a crowd without going broke or cook for just your family (they will love these recipes). My only warning is that you will have to have recipe cards ready when you have friends and family over when cooking from this book!

A beautiful and engaging story, this memoir deals with coming of age, learning to accept and give love, coming to terms with parents, and death and dying. Geneen Roth masterfully writes about many of life's large universal themes and puts them together expertly into a cohesive whole. This story will stick with you. This book is one of those rare gems to keep in your permanent library, one that will surely unfold a different lesson and mystery each time you read it.

Parents, like all humans, are imperfect. When they die, we sometimes recall events, actions, and issues that make us question why we may have ever thought they loved us. Pets, on the other hand, come with no strings attached. They love unconditionally and are a source of joy that is boundless. Geneen covers losing both in the funny and touching book, which may offer healing and hope for those who have lost either.
Narcissistic woman, narcissistic family, but the cat is nice........2006-06-10
I was extremely disappointed with this book. It has a great title and the concept of someone who loved neither cats nor herself learning to live with both interested me.
Lo and behold, Geneen Roth spends less than a page describing her antipathy to cats. She gets Blanche, suddenly he's ten years old, and there's no description of how she came to accept something she formerly disliked.
Her description of herself as an overweight, selfhating shopaholic (there are many, many mentions of earrings) is followed by a description of her immediate marriage to an apparent saint. Ms. Roth spends most of the book describing how successful, rich, and spoiled she is--how many people get Zen masters and acupuncture treatments for their cats?--but the greater part is spent on describing her neuroses and her father, pretty much in that order.
Ms. Roth is apparently stung that her father left his money to his wife rather than to her and her brother. If she truly loved her father she'd not have expected anything; after all, his medical treatments were 'only' half a million dollars. His wife is described as working as a secretary. Why does a millionaire's wife work? Possibly because she needs to for financial or personal reasons? In any case, Daddy's money was his, not hers, and he probably felt that Ms. Roth had enough on her own, while the wife needed it more.
This is a self serving tale of a very privileged woman who likes to write about herself. I would have appreciated hearing more about the cat.
Wonderful and tearjerking read.......2006-05-14
This book was absolutley wonderful! It pulls at your heart and really makes you think. I recommend it to everyone. Geneen has a great way with words. I have enjoyed some of her other books as well such as Appetites and When You Eat at the Refrigerator Pull Up a Chair.

You Can't Do Without It........2004-07-01
The tag line for the Gun Digest is "Essential Information for Shooters, Collectors and Students of the Gun" and that pretty well sums it up. This is the bible of the gun hobby. It has a series of articles that range from the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde to reviews of new gun offerings, it has a summary of what's new in handguns, rifles, shotguns and accessory items, and finally it has a complete catalog of all of the offerings of all the gun companies. I have each annual volume of Gun Digest in my library going back more than 50 years. I can't imagine doing without them.

If you have the 2001, 2002 or 2003 copies don't buy it, very few changes from those editions, otherwise, the book is an essentisl reference and I like the colored section on custom guns.
Change the title to Local Greatest Gun Book.......2003-12-22
One of the world's greatest handguns is the Wildey, it isn't even mentioned in the handgun section, in the WEB directory Wildey is mentioned as Widley !! It's a same.
Another well known handgun and beatifully designed is the Tanfoglio (www.tanfoglio.it), it is only mentioned once in the Manufactorer's Directory.
In the rifles section there's no mention about the Accuracy Precision Rifles (one of the best sniper rifles in the world).
The front page is different on the one I got at home and the one shown on Amazon.com Why is that?
The front page also says 'Complete Illustrated...' well it isn't complete at all
Gun Digest Annual.......2003-09-18
The gun digest has been the premier firearms publication since 1944. No other annual has covered the field consistantly for this amount of time. There are many interesting articles from many contributing authors over its 60+ year span that are timeless in their relevance. Buy and collect gun digests where you can find them and you will have a wealth of information at your fingertips. Especially the gun digest treasuries editions. Those are truly gold. They contain, besides reprints of the best articles, a thoroughly indexed cross reference by author or subject of all the articles published in the various publications of the gun digest up to the date of publication of the treasury edition. The last treasury, the 7th was from 45 years of gun digest. I'm hopeful that the current owners, Krause books will come out with a new treasury edition soon. If you view the gun digest as a cumulative work or as a single standalone issue, you can truly appreciate its command of the firearms and shooting dicipline fields. The 2004 edition continues this fine tradition.
Doesn't live up to its title.......2003-09-07
This is a good book, but clearly not the greatest gun book.

i have followed susie coelho's career since she first started with HGTV. Her latest book STYLING FOR ENTERTAINING is such a great find because it actually gives you step by step advice on how to transform space for entertaining, without breaking your budget....and also how small things can make a big difference in your home.
this book inspired me so much, that i invited friends over for drinks this past weekend and used some of her entertaining ideas
and let me tell you.....they were a big hit.
can't go wrong with this book or with susie coelho.

I think this book is fantastic. I am definitely going to use the Christmas idea for my home. Susie Coelho's style is so simple and elegant, I really love it. I also bought a book for my next door neighbor and she also enjoyed the book very much. I noticed Susie is hosting a television series called Outer Spaces on HGTV so I am going to tune into that as well.

Should be required reading for all young people .......2007-05-30
I bought this book in hardcover when it first came out and since then have bought several copies to give to other people, both black and white, both young and old. Without fail, this book has impacted people, and every one of them has told me how much they learned from this wonderful book.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did a masterful job in gathering these inspiring stories from what has been, unfortunately, the footnotes of history, if they were acknowledged at all. The achievements by black Americans and their contributions to this country have been largely ignored by historians until recently. And even today, many black Americans who were not taught as young people about their heritage remain oblivious to what should be a matter of great pride.
We have taken great steps to equalize human rights, but we still have a way to go to completely obliterate the racial prejudice many of us grew up with. Books like this by people with the stature of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will help get us to where we should be--respecting people of all races, colors and creeds.

I found this book to be very informative and very well writen! I particularly enjoyed learning true historical facts that have long been misrepresented, or clouded with partial information. I highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys history and is interested in learning truth.

What's more remarkable than the informative nature of this text is how it came to be...
An African American sport icon who gained success through one of the primary avenues African Americans have to reach affluence (sports and entertainment) just to use it as an avenue to actually uplift the intellectual level of his community. Well done!
I can't tell you how many tears it brings to my eyes to see a brother who achieve greatness through the stereotypical avenue of sports and actually use his greatness to do the truly great...uplift his people. Though there have been lists and books previous to his on the same subject, it has rarely been done by a person with such influence among youth, and for that I credit him unlike other past atheletes who simply use their stardom to sell grills, orange juice, or try and become rappers.

Simply put, I love this book. I like the fact that it summarizes the lives of so many African Americans including the famous and the still unknown. I highly recommend this book to any reader seeking information about the lives and consequent impact of some of our heroes.
