Why do we always want more? Why do we never give up? When do we stop? A fine story by Richard Ford in the perils of adultery; a remarkable piece of autobiography by Ved Mehta on his painful search for a woman's love. Plus: Nik Cohn, A. L. Kennedy, Aleksandar Hemon, Robyn Davidson, Joseph O'Neill, and introducing a brilliant Polish writer, Olga Tokarczuk.

Journalist and ex-poet Maggie Black has inherited the estate of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Davis Cooper, with whom she corresponded for years, but never met. Maggie is a cosmopolitan woman of the West Coast and Europe, and a child of the Appalachian mountains; she has no interest in the desert. She has an ex-husband she still loves in L.A. And Davis Cooper drowned in the Arizona desert, the victim of a mysterious murder. Maggie has many reasons to stay away. Yet she moves to Cooper's desert home, seeking to unravel the secrets of Cooper and his late lover, the mad painter Anna Naverra. But these, Maggie will discover, are not the desert's only mysteries. Ancient powers are stirring--enigmatic and dangerous spirits that would use humans for their own purposes.
Terri Windling is the most important and influential fantasy editor of the 1980s and 1990s: Her many accomplishments include editing (and often discovering) a pantheon of fantasy gods--Steven Brust, Emma Bull, Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen, and many more. She edits, with Ellen Datlow, the indispensible annual Year's Best Fantasy and Horror and the acclaimed revisionist fairy-tale anthology series that began with Snow White, Blood Red. She has won the World Fantasy Award five times. So it's not too surprising that her first novel, The Wood Wife, is well written, fascinating, insightful, and the winner of the 1997 Mythopoeic Award for Best Novel. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
When prize-winning poet Davis Cooper died mysteriously in the canyons east of Tucson, Arizona, he left his estate to Maggie Black, a young writer who knew him only from his letters. The Spirit will take you........2007-09-14
Terri Windling has written a very entertating book. This has things of interest for those, who like Native American background. It's a love story, but I like it for the southwestern background and native american flavor. I really recommend this it's a good read
Fantasy meets Myth.......2007-04-25
This is one of my favourite fictional works ever! It is superbly constructed, beautifully written and rattles along at a good pace, holding your interest. It is one of those books that is best appreciated in a single sitting, exploring the theme of the magick in the land, and the spiritual creatures which inhabit it. The interaction of the characters is very strong and well-written, and it does not fall down anywhere. This is a perfect book for any occasion, and anyone who loves the land should buy and read it.
One of those stories that stay with you..........2006-08-27
I've read this book 4 or 5 times and still enjoy it immensely. I first read it shortly after it first came out, and loved it then. I bought it completely by accident, finding it in an airport bookstore and not even realizing it was fantasy until I started reading it. (I originally thought it was a mystery, and since I prefer Sci Fi/Fantasy, I'm not even sure why I picked it up.)
The characters are well-formed and interesting, as is the plot. The descriptions of the southwest made me want to go there. Years later, spending time in Santa Fe, Canyon de Chelly, Sedona and elsewhere, I felt the images from the book floating back to me and had to re-read the book as soon as I got home from that trip.
I wish Terri would leave off editing and write more! Not that I have any complaints about her editing...
The Wood Wife- Marvelous.......2006-01-07
Having long been a fan of Brian Froud's faeries, I pictured his slightly quirky, sometimes frightening, sometimes sweet creatures when I read this enchanting tale. Imagine my surprise upon finishing the book when I discovered Terri Windling based her creatures on Froud's faeries?
Well written, thought out, and executed. The story holds you tight, sometimes with tingles up the spine...a murder mystery, love story, faerie tale, a stark and sureal look at desert life, and the life of the desert. I will read it again, and hope she writes a sequel, as my heart did not want the story to end.
Magical realism, faerie myths and art.......2006-01-06
"The Wood Wife" won the world fantasy award for a good reason - it meshes magical realism, faerie myths and the artwork of Brian Froud in a strong tale of old favourites - love, loss, friendship and sacrifice.
Poet Davis Cooper leaves all his posessions to a long time penfriend he has never met. She journeys into his life, slowly unraveling his story, encountering his creations and gathering awareness of the desert's secrets around her.
Characterisations and descriptions are original and vivid, enhancing the mental imagery available to the reader. Recommended.
Book Description
Wycherley's four comedies are admired for their satirical wit, farcical humour, vivid characterization, and social criticism.Love in a Wood, a lively comedy of intrigue, established him as a brilliant new dramatist. The Gentleman Dancing-Master, in contrast, disappointed contemporary audiences, but the central relationship between Hippolyta and Gerrard features an original and sympathetic study of a young woman's attitudes and feelings. The Country Wife is a sharp but also highly amusing attack on social and sexual hypocrisy. The Plain Dealer, a powerful dramatic satire loosely based on Moliere's Le Misanthrope, continues and enlarges Wycherley's assault on greed and corruption. Under the General Editorship of Michael Cordner of the University of York, the texts of the plays have been newly edited and are presented with modernized spelling and punctuation. In addition, there is a scholarly introduction, a note on staging, and detailed annotation.

Unique in the Sheckley canon.......1999-03-27
Sheckley's world is populated with flesh-and-blood creatures, but all the same it reminds me of Lem's "Cyberiad". I'm sure it reminds everyone of Lem's Cyberiad. And yes, Lem is better. Now that that's out of the way ...
King Dramocles discovers on his fortieth birthday that he has a Destiny, but he doesn't yet know what it is; and thereafter the book is the story of one triggering mnemonic after another, each one bringing to light an earlier memory which, usually, gives Dramocles reason to disregard all the previous mnemonics. A contemporary reviewer said that Sheckley "pulls rabbit after rabbit out of his hat, trying to fool us into thinking that hat is really a Russian doll." Well, it seems I was fooled. The book doesn't consist of deus ex machina; it's ABOUT deus ex machina. (Sorry I don't know the plural of the Latin.) The plot twists seemed like true plot twists, because Sheckley never tries to pretend that the story is spontaneous ... the only constancy the reader can cling to is this: whatever is going on, it isn't spontaneous.
It's written in the latterday Sheckley style, where Sheckley shows evidence of boredom with his slick magazine writing of the 1950s ... sometimes resulting in slipshod work, but sometimes, as here, resulting in something more fresh and interesting. Not his best book, but one of his sweetest.

Book Description
Millions of children across the country have food sensitivities or allergies, and the number is on the rise. And most of these children don't get to eat cookies, for fear of the reaction they might have from the wheat, or the peanuts. Imagine the feeling a young child must have as they stand there watching their friends munch on cookies just out of Mom's oven, while they have to make do with yet another carrot stick
.
Leslie Hammond knows that left-out feeling all too well. As a child she suffered from severe food allergies and would watch year after year as, when the birthday song had ended and she'd blown out the candles, her fancy party cake was whisked away and served to her friends, while she ate a dry rice cake. Now the mother of allergic children herself, Leslie vowed to spare her own children that trauma. She had developed over 100 recipes that will appeal to a kid's tastes. Unlike other food-allergy cookbooks already on the market, her recipes hardly ever call for the kinds of ingredients that would gross out any kid -- like tofu.
The book's recipes take into account all of the most common food sensitivities like wheat and gluten, peanuts, or dairy. Each recipe can be modified to fit the dietary needs to the child.
It's divided into three sections -- snacks, main dishes, and treats. Leslie and co-author Lynne Rominger also provide information about how to find what you need in a regular grocery store, instead of requiring a separate trip to the natural foods store. She writes from the perspective of an ordinary working mom, and doesn't design eating regimes that would take all day in the kitchen to satisfy.
With the recipes in this book, even the most sensitive child will get a cookie too.
Customer Reviews:
Awful!.......2007-09-29
This cook book was awful! It didn't help me one bit when I started dealing with my child's food allergies. I thought the recipes would come without having to make all of these modifications on my own. I would never suggest this book to a friend! (OR a stranger for that matter!)
Not good for dairy or eggs........2007-08-02
I am thankful that I borrowed this book from the library first. Almost EVERY recipe calls for butter, sour cream, milk, or egg. It is so bad it is almost funny. Example Buttermilk Pancakes - egg free variation: omit eggs. Dairy free variation - Replace milk with rice milk, and replace butter with margarine. All this book has is a collection of recipes that are not good for dairy allergic people with substitutions at the bottom of almost every recipe. I can do this with any recipe I don't need a special cookbook to tell me to replace milk with rice milk. When I read the cover of the book - More than 150 recipes that are: Wheat Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Nut Free, Egg Free, and Low in sugar - I have to laugh. O and if you are allergic to nuts this book gives you some truly profound advice: Omit Nuts.
Best for wheat free.......2007-06-22
Luckily I read the reviews here first and checked out this book at my library before buying it. If your child has multiple allergens, I suggest you do the same. If you have relied on processed foods until now, this book may be helpful and her tone is certainly enthusiastic. However, if you're experienced in the kitchen, this book is a big waste of time and money. Just get out your Joy of Cooking and omit whatever your child is allergic too and you'll have this book.
Most-used cookbook I own.......2007-05-15
Since learning of my 6 year old's allergies a year ago, I have spent hours and hours trying to make "normal" food for him. I wish I would have tried this one first - it would have saved me a lot of time and money. The chicken nuggets, fish sticks, potato pizza, vanilla wafers, are among our favorites now. I highly recommend the book for anyone with kids. An extra plus is that the ingredients were already in my kitchen (white rice flour is common - easy to find, not as expensive as many specialty flours). I made one special trip for vanilla powder to make several of the recipes, and it is so worth it. I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Not what I expected.......2007-04-25
I was very disappointed in this cookbook. I should have done more reserach before I purchased it. Because nearly all of the recipes contain dairy and egg, I have avoided making anything for fear that by using substitutes, the recipe will not be the same. There are far better allergy cookbooks out there.
Book Description
Written by a psychologist who is a leader in the field of pet bereavement, this practical but sympathetic guide validates the survivor's often misunderstood feelings, explains the importance of the human-animal bond, and offers strategies for working through the grieving process. Some of the coping techniques include memorializing the pet, recognizing problematic thinking, and finding support. The book also covers dealing with guilt and explaining the pet's death to a child.
Customer Reviews:
I read this for an R.N. Continuing Education course.......2007-09-29
I found this book in a program that offers courses for R.N. continuing education. What a wonderful book! We have had many pets over the years. With three kids in the family, we've loved frogs, lizards, fish, cats, dogs and a horse. My horse is 25 yrs. old now and that's why this particular book caught my eye. I think it is very well thought out and written. I give thanks to Lorri Greene and Jacquelyn Landis for addressing the love that we have for our companions and how to help them-and us- to go on when their time comes. My daughter is in Vet school. I'm giving this to her. Good Book!
A Wonderful Book for Pet Bereavement.......2007-03-28
I got this book soon after I lost my 10-year-old Persian male soul mate, and it really helped me through a time of great sorrow. There are exercises to do that help you work through your grief and help you to understand your feelings. I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with the loss of a pet.
Perhaps Works as a Textbook, But Not for Those Grieving.......2007-01-13
I ordered this book and waited for it eagerly, based on "Search Inside" reading I did on Amazon. I hoped the chapter devoted to guilt experienced by "animal guardians," as the author considerately calls pet owners, when euthanasia or an accident precipitates a pet's death would speak to me. Therefore I was surprised to find the book more clinical than inspirational. I also found it emotionally distant from its subject...which perhaps is to be expected, considering that it was written by a psychologist. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone suffering from deep grief over a lost pet.
Too cold and unfeeling.......2007-01-11
Being in the mist of animal grief right now I just recently got this book. One of the things the author says is why one is grieving is to not look at the animal's toys or photos until later. Well the first thing I wnat to do is to have their photo out. She seems to contradict herself when she says there is no right or wrong way to heal then she says don't do this or that. I found the book trite, unfeeling ,and cold. I am sorry I bought it. I will return it and get "The Loss of A Pet" instead.
Good Resource.......2007-01-11
This is a good resource for parents unsure how to communicate with their children about grief and loss of a pet. I purchased it as a resource for my Good Grief Pet Support Group for children at my school. I found that it explained well what parents should do when a pet dies, give them activities they can do with their children to celebrate the pet's life, and resources to consider. A nice book to have in the delicate time of losing a favorite family member, your pet.
Book Description
Chatty CathyTM and Her Talking Friends, an unauthorized history of Mattel talking dolls, documents the famous dolls that were the rage of the 1960s. When you pulled the string they talked! They're all here in this first book devoted entirely to talking dolls-Chatty Cathy, Chatty Baby, Beany Boy, Matty, and Barbie, to name just a few. Read along year by year as Sean Kettelkamp lets you see for yourself why these dolls were so popular. Over 240 color photographs illustrate the adorable dolls, their clothing, accessories, even the talking mechanisms. You'll have great fun looking back at the era of talking dolls. This comprehensive book includes a value guide, making it an indispensable addition to a doll collector's library.
Customer Reviews:
A nice PICTORIAL of talking dolls.......1999-09-04
The photos in this book are big, clear and there are some very nice toys shown. Given the price of this book I sincerely thought it would be more thorough given the VAST amount of Mattel talking toys that were made. It is nice to have as an addition to one's collection. One thing that bothers me is that it is "An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors" which means that material gathered was done so without permission of Mattel and therefore may have some information errors. In addition to this book I encourage you to read "Chatty Cathy Dolls" and "Talking Toys of the 20th Century" by Don & Kathy Lewis.
Good book! Surprised at the other stuff included........1999-01-29
I was thinking this book was just going to be about the Chatty Cathy family, but it also includes a historical time line of sorts of almost all of the talking (and some other) dolls that Mattel made. Very helpful in identifying talking Mattel dolls of the 60s and early 70s. The Chatty Cathy section includes some info not included in an earlier book. Fun to look at and informative

Title: Collecting and Classifying Coloured Diamonds: An Illustrated Study of the Aurora Collection
Customer Reviews:
Accurate Colour Rendition of Diamond Photographs is Impressive.......2006-08-05
Although this seems like an expensive book, the fact that the large number of coloured diamonds are photographed so well, and rendered so accurately in the printed form is very impressive, especially to anyone who has ever tried to take high quality photographs of diamonds. It seets us a standard to attempt.
The book should also be a must for anybody thinking of "investing" in, collecting a=or aquiring any natural fancy coloured diamond.
Hofer'sbook on Fncy Coloured Dias.......2006-02-25
I have been aware of the Aurora Collection for 25+ years and was always amazed by it. Unfortunately, the collection raises more questions in one sitting than you can ever find answers for... until Hofer. Hofer is very likely the most knowledgeable person on earth when it comes to fancies, and his long-time association with Alan B and the Aurora collection has resulted in the most definitive book on the subject in print..
Excellent photos, certain materials hard to read.......1999-07-24
The most attractive parts are certainly the photography and the quality of the color printing. There are however a few disappointments. Firstly, under the chapter of the photos for the entire collection, one's appreciation can be marred by the reading of the so called Common Names for the diamonds which are by no means common. For readers who are not color diamond experts (and indeed even for those in the trade), such names could sometimes sound pompous. Secondly, the most widely adopted GIA color grading description is not used.I suppose somehow there is a temptionion for the author to preach and start his own system which could perhaps be understandable as 7 years of hard work has been done.Frequently, I still browse through the book, not so much because of the text, but because of the excellent colour photos. Overall, the author has still done a lot for the trade and introduced the wonderful color diamond world to the public. It is definitely a book I will treasure. For those who have been facinated by this book, they could be frustrated by the absence of sufficient materials on the subject. The way to quench one's thirst is to read the only other comprehensive book (a much thinner but with perhaps much more interesting and readable materials) by Harvey Harris.
The definitive text on colored diamonds........1999-02-12
This amazing piece of work reflects a tremendous effort by the author and his colleagues. The color photography is superb, especially noteworthy considering the difficulty in photographing small colored objects. ...A very useful appendix... and an extensive glossary provides in-depth discussions of technical terms. This is a beautifully illustrated work... it is an excellent compendium of information and should serve as a very valuable reference for gemologists and any scientist involved in diamond research, faculty, researchers, professionals. Book Description
A controversial and widely heralded look at the race-related pain and anger felt by the most respected, best educated, and wealthiest members of the black community.
Customer Reviews:
Tired of being sick and tired........2006-08-28
I wanted to read this book several years ago, but I was too busy being like the people in his book to read it. It's easy to digest; I finished it in less than a day. It is a better read for some white person looking for enlightenment than for one of us enraged, discontented, over-educated folk.
Outstanding book.......2006-07-23
I find the title a bit melodramatic - although there is definitely rage, there are a lot of other feelings, too. I won't summarize the book because the other reviewers have done so already. It seems that a key problem for successful African-Americans is the ambiguity of many situations. They are pretty sure race explains why they don't get ahead as they should have, but never (or rarely) 100% sure that any given situation and/or obstacle, such as delay in getting a promotion, is entirely due to racism. This uncertainty in itself sounds enormously frustrating.
What is very unfortunate is the extent to which successful people have to deny their feelings and reactions to avoid upsetting oversensitive or excessively judgemental white people, or just those whites (of which there are many) who are not as comfortable around African Americans as other whites. The too-frequent social rejection takes a huge toll, as well. Finally, there is the dilemma of raising children. Be blunt about racial injustice, or shield them from it? It all sounds tough to deal with - harder than it should be, and proof we have not arrived at a true recognition and respect for diversity, as well as overcoming the stereotypes of African-Americans as inferior.
One theme that haunts Cose is the frequency with which he was told - yes, I've done very well indeed, but - who knows how far I could have gone without these obstacles to overcome? The sense of lost opportunities is stated by a number of interviewees.
I wish Bill Gates would read this book and take it seriously. It seems unfair that for these arguments to really get the publicity they deserve, a rich white guy would have to adopt the cause. But I do think this book has gotten less publicity and been taken less seriously than it should have. Being subtly nasty to those who've done everything right and worked hard, in addition to being unfair, is stupid because it means America loses out in many ways.

Ellis Cose presents a thoughtful, well researched book that investigates the complex nuances of racial discrimination. Cose chooses to focus in his book on middle and upper middle class blacks, who show the most dissatisfaction with their social and economic standing according to his research. The feeling of exclusion among this group of people runs deep, whether social exclusion in the mostly-white neighborhoods where many of the people interviewed for this book live, racial exclusion from other members of their race who do not enjoy the same economic standing, or professional exclusion from the track that leads to corporate success.
Cose begins by presenting several stories of middle class blacks who, for one reason or another, have a reason to be dissatisfied with their position in life. What is most striking about these stories is that they are not rich with examples of egregious racial discrimination (though a couple of them are), but that they are mostly stories of affluent blacks who have more or less "made it," in spite of having a deck stacked against them. It is here that Cose introduces his first common theme: though the people interviewed for his book were more successful than most Americans, they have no idea where they may have ended up had they been given a chance to fulfill their potential.
During the course of his numerous interviews with middle class black professionals, Cose found a curious pattern. There were approximately 12 common threads among the many stories he heard. The author named these common threads "The Dozen Demons." They were, in essence, the most common hurdles to the success of today's black professional. Managers would do well to study these 12 complaints, for they are not what most would guess them to be. In fact, more introspctive white managers might find that they unconciously engage in undermining behavior every day, without even knowing it. In this respecet, the book serves as a valuable tool for self-aware people who accept that racism exists, yet do not want to accept that condition.
The central theme of the book is that modern racism is less about hatred and hostility than it is about condescension. Since the implements of racism now have a decidedly lower profile, it is more difficult for people who are not the victims of racism to show much empathy or acknowledgement. That being the case, middle class blacks have generally tended to find that being vocal about racism is not a particularly effective means of creating dialogue. Instead, Cose observes, they tend to keep a low profile, stay outside the mainstream, and distance themselves emotionally from their white counterparts in order to cope. Unfortunately, many white people mistake this reaction for "reverse discrimination," or anti-white prejudice.
Rather than eliminate racism, it seems that Americans have instead eliminated many of the effective means of protesting, arguing against, or even identifying racism. It is becoming more fashionable to insist that race does not matter rather than start any meaningful discussion of the remaining efforts necessary to eliminate racism. When someone treats a black person with respect as an individual, it is a deed to be rewarded with praise. Yet white people expect that same treatment as a social norm.
Cose theorizes that the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s had the unfortunate effect of creating a great deal of "White Guilt". That white guilt is responsible for policies that see minorities as targets of charity, which serves to reinforce the low expectations and perception of laziness that unconciously pervade the minds of many white people.
The problem is not that people do not feel guilty enough, it is that they are in denial. Cose's work goes a long way toward opening eyes, if we can set our fear aside long enough to take a very hard look at ourelves. Reading this book is a good start.
Makes me wanna holler! Throw up both my hands........2003-01-29
Ellis Cose has written brilliantly with regard to the American Dilemma. This is without a doubt his best work. Cose has interviews with successful African-American men and women, including lawyers and corporate executives. What comes forth is a searing indictment of our society, and a warning with regard to (as James Baldwin wrote more than a generation ago) "the fire next time".
A central theme of the work makes clear that regardless of the rate of one's acknowledges material success; racial prejudice remains one of if not the most pervasive and oppressing impacts on the lives of people of color in this society.
"What is there to be angry about?", one may ask. Our President enjoys the benefits which have flowed to him solely due to his Father's success at Yale. At the same time, he decries as "unfair" a Law School's use of race to assist in determining which members of this generation will get to enjoy the same benefit. One person is unabashed about his ability to enjoy the blessings of an accident of birth. Another is challenged and denigrated for the temerity of seeking a corner of the same benefit.
Sometimes, seeing someone else explain the problem makes it not necessarily easier to deal with, but easier to understand (I guess in some way that leads to being easier to deal with). Often as I read this, I thought "yeah".
If the "privileged class", those who by virtually every yardstick appear to be "making it" (and have the most invested in this society) have this much rage, the feeling which is pervasive throughout much of the throughout the rest of Black America is something which must be resolved.
Anyone who thinks that we have got this problem of race in America solved ought to read this book.
