Book Description
In these ten stories, Charles Baxter shows his genius in making his characters' everyday sufferings--and occasional fragile joys--seem utterly unprecedented, even as he reminds us, gently and with a sly comic twist, that everything they feel is only the collateral damage of being human. Whether he is writing about the players in a rickety bisexual love triangle or a woman visiting her husband in a nursing home, probing the psychic mainspring of a grimly obsessive weight lifter or sifting through the layers of resentment, need, and pity in a friendship that has gone on a few decades too long, Baxter enchants us with the elegant balance of his prose and the unexpectedness of his insights. Long admired and now once more available in paperback,
Harmony of the World is a masterpiece of lucidity and compassion.
Customer Reviews:
Poignant Fiction.......2005-07-06
Please don't take the fact that I gave this only three stars to mean that this book isn't very good. I gave it three stars because I am comparing it to other works by Charles Baxter.
This collection of short stories highlights the human condition, for better or for worse. What is true about Baxter's fiction is that he makes characters interesting, especially those characters who, if they were real people, I would have nothing to do with in reality. That is a good thing.
One story, "The Crank", acts as if it doesn't belong in this collection, but in another collection of Baxter's called "A Relative Stranger." In "The Crank", a loner meets a crank caller and discovers something about himself along the way. The protagonists in these stories range from lost college students to elderly persons who seem just as lost. The title story reminds us that we share the same griefs and joys that everyone else does.
Overall, this collection is worth a read, especially if you love short stories, or if you want to learn how short stories are crafted.
with a little disharmony as well.......2001-04-15
Originally published in 1984, this collection features Baxter's least middle-class, most internally-troubled characters. They are senile, depressed, chronically lonely. The finale, "The Crank" is a gorgeous study of plot. The recently divorced protagonist's interactions with a similarly lonely guru are magical and uplifting. Baxter went on to mature considerably in terms of craft, but these stories are emotionally generous and smart.
Another winner from Baxter.......2000-07-22
Sifting through "Harmony of the World" is like panning for gold. Each page is an exercise in patience and endurance, but when you happen upon a nugget of Baxter's comical insight or warm compassion, you know you've struck it rich. Baxter does a wonderful job of balancing intelligence, humor, and believable characters. The title story alone is worth the price.

Book Description
From the creator and artist of Raggedy Ann and Andy, this delicately designed book was first published in 1917 by Voland Company of Chicago and has been restored to its original luster in this edition. Decorating each page are whimsical, jewel-like, full-color illustrations — among the most memorable examples of the "Sunbonnet" period of children's book illustrations from 1905-1920.

My Very Own Tooth Fairy Pillow.......2000-04-06
This is an enchanting tale of a misplaced fairy who never gets anything right, until she falls into her role as the tooth fairy. A cute story for young children who are beginning to lose their first teeth. My daughter loved the story and the tooth shaped pillow for her loose tooth was exciting. I would recommend this book and pillow set to anyone with a child who has a loose tooth!

Story Time Fun!.......2004-05-12
I'm a teenager and I still enjoy reading the stories. Offodile adds such a creative touch to the stories that keep me enchanted. I'm glad that he has captured so many of these folktales in writing so that I can share them with my children as well. I am lucky, being born of Igbo parents, since my mother can sing the songs to me the way they are supposed to be sung. It is very interesting how similar the stories that aren't even from Nigeria are to the ones that my mother knows. Get this book and keep it in your library for fun stories to enjoy in the future.

What if a group of primitive hominids had survived ?, .......2007-03-08
Like Harry Turtledove's "A different Flesh" this superb book by Roger MacBride Allen takes as its starting point the survival of an early race of hominids and the enormous moral problems which might arise if humanity discovered a race of creatures which are human enough that we have to accept them as people but primitive enough that we cannot pretend even as a legal fiction that they are our equals.
The story starts when a paleontologist, who is an American of colour, is staying with her family, who have done well enough that they now own the plantation where their ancestors were once slaves. She finds some records indicating that the original owner had imported as slave labour a group of creatures who her ancestor described as apes. Intrigued she organises an archaological dig to try to find out what kind of ape could have been used in this way. She was not expecting what she finds ...
An example of one of the thought provoking ideas in the book - a journalist asks a distinguished scientist what question he would ask an Australopithicus, and he replies that he would ask "What is a person?" Later in the story he actually does get to meet a hominid closely related to Australopithecus, and on a whim he does ask her this question.
On the last page of the book we get her answer and, although of limited use as a wider definition, it would be completely convincing. If you want to know what it is, you'll have to read the book.
Excellent book, now back in print.......2002-02-21
I finished reading this book a few days ago, and find myself constantly bringing it up in conversation with my wife and other people. It's extremely good: paleoanthropologically accurate, but also dead-on in its human psychology. More: it's one of those books that happens to be packaged as science fiction that could be read, and thoroughly enjoyed, by any thoughtful reader. Indeed, I used to say that no SF book would ever have a chance of being an Oprah's Book Club pick, but this one just might. Its soaring humanity, fascinating look at the concept of slavery (through the distorting lens of a group of African-American slaves having actually burried australopithecines who had been forced to work alongside them in the fields), and finely detailed (and completely believable) African-American female protagonist would make it a natural choice for Oprah. But it also should satisfy anyone who IS a science-fiction reader. It certainly satisfied this lifelong fan. I've written my own paleoanthropologically themed SF (HOMINIDS, from Tor Books), and deliberately waited until I'd finished before I started Allen's book, so as not to be influenced by it. Now that I have read it, it impressed the heck out of me. Five stars.
A keeper.......2000-04-14
The year this book came out, my friends passed it around until the copies we had were tattered. We all thought Allen deserved to win the Campbell award for best new writer. I still have a "circulation" copy for others to read because it's so good.
The basic story line takes you from Africa to the Smithsonian Institue in Washington, DC, then to a startling discovery in the Southern States (remains of prehistoric man are found that only date back to the 1800's). The main character is a black woman, who's point of view is so convincing, I initially thought Allen was a pseudonym for a woman. She's not only dealing with an anthropological mystery, but also with everyday life and marital problems.
The anthropology and basic science presented in the story helps move the plot along, rather than interfering. In fact, by the end of the book, I found myself believing the events depicted really could happen!
Book Description
What better way to experience the richness of Ireland's cultural heritage than a meandering journey through its traditional pubs? The Parting Glass is a nostalgic ramble through 43 of the most inviting establishments in the cities and countryside of Ireland. Eric Roth's warm, glowing photographs and a sparkling text by Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe columnist Eileen McNamara capture the timeless feel and flavor of this intrinsic, but disappearing, part of Irish life.
Ireland's pubs are legendary-unique meeting places where revelers have habitually gathered to sing, dance, and share a little craic with their stout. Some of the pubs visited here are historic taverns; others are more contemporary. But all reflect the vibrancy and drama of the country's social history. Like many traditions entering a new century, Ireland's pub culture may now be endangered, even as the "Irish Pub" look and feel are being exported across Europe and America. This charming volume invites tourists, armchair travelers, and anyone interested in Irish history and culture to raise a "parting glass" to this cherished aspect of life in Ireland.
Customer Reviews:
The Parting Glass.......2007-03-25
Great photography. Great for Irish conversation. Makes a great gift.
Mouth watering tour of Ireland.......2007-01-18
This book is for those who want to be swept away on a marvelous journey through a land of incredible scenery interrupted by warm and friendly people invigorated by mouth watering blends of spirits served in the most welcoming places short of heaven.
A four-leaf clover of a find! .......2006-03-22
This book made a wonderful gift for my husband this Christmas. He and I went to Ireland a few years ago to see a U2 concert at Slane castle. To this day, it remains one of my favorite vacations of all times, and this book rekindled those wonderful memories. So much so, that after browsing through the pages together, my husband and I are planning a return trip "across the pond" as a gift to each other! We're even planning some of our itenerary around these cool cities and pubs.
The photos are just beautiful and so are the stories of the owners, the bartenders, the patrons and pub histories. Neat facts are tucked in between the pages, making it more than a photo essay -- I learned that a special place called a "Snug" exists in the older pubs, where the women used to share a pint or two without the company
of men.
If you are looking for an unusual and thoughtful gift, I recommend this book. It would make a wonderful father's day gift, (or mother's day gift!), it would be great as a birthday present, a graduation present, a coffee table book for a new homeowner, or for any other occassion where you want to raise a pint in celebration. Cheers!
Photos on tap.......2006-03-09
When I'm in Ireland -- which isn't nearly enough -- I try to avoid the trendy new pubs and stick to the joints where the local people go, where you're still likely to find a session in the corner, where the food is simple but hearty, and where the Guinness is pulled with pride.
Eric Roth, a Boston-based photographer, pays tribute to the "real" Irish pubs of Ireland in "The Parting Glass." Of course, there are thousands upon thousands of pubs to choose from, and the book had limited space, so after exhaustive research (read: going to lots of pubs) he picked 43 representative establishments to capture on film. Eileen McNamara, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe columnist, went along for the trip and provided the text to support Roth's images.
Of course, I have my own favorite spots in Ireland, and sadly, they're not included here. And yet, of the 43 pictured, I've been to only a handful, and they ALL look a delight!
The book includes numerous large, colorful photos of pub facades and pub interiors. Too, you'll find distinctive pub signs and unique pub decor. Better yet, you'll see people manning taps and hoisting pints, people who make up Ireland's traditional pub scene as much as the Guinness-stained tables, peat fires, live music and pleasant conversation.
There are city pubs and country pubs, ornate pubs and plain, crowded and empty. Roth's photos are gorgeous, rich in color, detail and personality. McNamara's narrative is equally colorful, informative and evocative of the pub experience. Combined, they create a desire to dive through the pages, take a seat and order a pint.
What an amazing journey........2006-01-27
Eric and Eileen have done a masterful job of painting an intimate and loving portrait of these cherished Irish institutions. Eric has a keen eye for dramatic composition and a wonderful sensitivity to the details that make these places come alive in his photographs. Eileen's lively prose is direct and personal. It's the next best thing to embarking on your own year-long pub crawl through Ireland.
Book Description
This heavily illustrated volume will prove a blessing to every aquarium hobbyist who has had to settle for superficial plant descriptions in general fish-keeping books. It presents a detailed A-to-Z directory covering hundreds of aquarium plants with high quality color photos and succinct profiles of each plant. Information includes the plant's common name, botanical designation, growth cycle, and general description. The book's additional sections offer details on how to grow and propagate aquatic plants, and how to protect them from parasites and other problems. This handsome volume features approximately 450 color photos and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
What a waste of money.......2007-07-23
Don't purchase this book unless you are a botanist. It is very difficult to understand and the layout impossible to follow.
Good book but some questions remain unanswer........2007-06-30
This is a beautiful book with many high quality pictures of the plants. Overall it has well organized content but some informations are just not specific enough. For example, how much CO2 to dose to your tank is appropriate? How much Gh is a water soft or hard? How much time it normally takes to "cycle" a tank? No introduction on the pros and cons of different CO2 reactors types. Some answers may not be trivial but at least general guide line should be provided to be any useful.
A great all round book for aquatic plants.......2007-06-02
This is a very good all round book for aquatic plants from the substrata , to light requirments etc etc. This book even give basic gardening requirments and arranging to have a healthy and attractice garden in your aquarium .
A great plant book.......2007-01-28
This is an excellent book, simple as that. It has information on not only plants, but many other important aspects of aquarium care. It has extensive information on how plants work in the natural habitat, in the aquarium, and how to care for them.
Everything is simple and concise and explained well, the images are great and show exactly what they should. How to trim different plants, how to plant them, how to get rid of algae and making a balance of nutrients in the aquarium and so on. Just examples of what it covers, if you have an aquarium and have plants and just want to know what to do to keep your plants healthy, just get this book.
Great introduction to aquatic plant care.......2006-08-03
If you are new to planted tanks, then this is a great book to have. It discusses all of the relevent topics ranging from tank setup to pruning and proprogating to nutrients and equipment. The first half of the book is a guide to all of the aspects of caring for aquatic plants. There are a few places where a little more thorough discussion would have been valuble, but for most cases the book does a good job covering the topics. The second half of the book lists many of the plants that you can keep emersed or submerged in an aquarium. There are very nice pictures to go along with the descriptions, making it a useful reference for most plants you will find in your LFS.
In short, I'd say this book would be a nice addition to any planted tank enthusiasts library.
Book Description
Hundreds of different aquarium plants are illustrated in color with detailed descriptions of each plant, its common name, botanical designation, and information on its growth cycle and general care. A brand-new title in the growing Mini Encyclopedia Series for aquarium hobbyists, this book helps aquarium owners plan, create, and maintain a colorful and interesting environment for fish and aquatic life. Each volume provides in-depth information and instruction on a specific subdivision of fish keeping. Complementing the text are sets of illustration panels filled with full-color photos, each with its own detailed and instructive caption. The team of authors, all recognized aquarium experts, show readers how to set up an aquarium, select species, and maintain an optimal environment for the tank's aquatic and plant life. Approximately 250 color photos and illustrations in each volume.
Customer Reviews:
perfect beginner book.......2006-09-06
this book is more than a paperback of color plant profiles, it touches on all the basics of fresh water chemistry, plant keeping, layout and maintenance, using short paragraphs and nicely illustrated pages. it lost a star for not elaborating more on the wide variety of fish, shrimp and snails that are often used to keep a planted aquarium clean.
Excellent book for amateur and wannabe expert.......2006-01-22
This book is a great buy for the price. It has the most recent information (2005 edition), is nicely organized and formatted, and the illustrations and descriptors are very good. The sections on individual plants is very helpful with most popular plant types illustrated and described. I especially like the fact that the decriptions, while brief, are very to the point and provide essential information in a clear concise way (plant height, light and other requirements, overall ease of maintenance, growth rate, suggested placement in tank etc). Not as comprehensive in listing species as some other books, but more than enough for most avid aquarists (I have had aquaria and live plants for over 25 years!). If you buy only one book, make it this one!
basic.......2005-09-22
Basically a good book. Pictures are nice and I couldn't find many faults. Book could be more extensive.

Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants
ASIN: 0262192071 |
Book Description
The Aquarium Encyclopedia is an invaluable reference for everyone involved in fish-keeping, from hobbyists who maintain a single home aquarium to professionals who manage large public aquaria. It is perhaps the most comprehensive work on the subject ever published. Its alphabetical entries span more than 600 pages and the text is augmented with over 1,000 illustrations, many in color.
The book covers all aspects of the aquarium and of fish-keeping, including the natural history of fish, plants, and other forms of aquatic life. Entries encompass the history and basic principles of ichthyology in language that is fully accessible to the aquarium hobbyist. The various technical apparatus of freshwater and marine aquaria are described. The families and higher taxa of primarily aquatic vertebrates and the genera and species of thousands of freshwater and marine fish are covered with complete details of anatomy, physiology, embryology, and ethology.
The Encyclopedia includes practical information on fish diseases, the rearing and feeding of fish, ecology, and water chemistry. The genera and species of the most important aquatic plants are also described in terms of their anatomy, physiology, pathology, and proper cultivation. And the other occupants of aquaria-the invertebrate and freshwater and marine animals-are given appropriate coverage through detailed descriptions of their biology.
Entries are cross-referenced as a further aid for readers who want to explore the endlessly fascinating aquatic world by creating and nurturing balanced freshwater or marine environments in their homes.
Günther Sterba, who edited the original German edition of this book, is Professor of Zoology and Animal Physiology, Director of the Zoological Institute, and head of Research in Cell Biology and Regulation at the Karl-Marx University in Leipzig. Dick Mills, the supervisory editor for this English edition, has been a Council Member of the Federation of British Aquatic Societies for over ten years and is the author of three books and numerous articles on aquarium-keeping.

I have owned Sterba's Aquarium Encyclopedia since 1985, and to this day it remains my favourite book on the subject. Comprehensive, concise and to the point, packed with information, plenty of illustrations, etc. I would not be without it.

this book is good at explaining the in's and out's of creating natural bioms in your tank. i recently established a 125 gal. fresh water tank resembling an amazon habitat. i especially liked the parts on plants and maintenence. however, what the book does lack are those rare fish that i try very hard to stock with.

A very informative guide to freshwater fish. Very handy to have when considering adding anythign to your tank.
incomplete information.......2000-06-17
This is a nice book to read if you are mildly interested in bredding tropical fishes. If you really want to do it, you will not find the specific information you may want to have in this book. For example, in breeding Betta Splendens the author suggests water temp and aquarium size. Unforunately, water quality may well be much more important. What is the recommended Ph? Water hardness and other chemical factors if properly reproduced as the fish experiences it in the wild will help in spawning the fish. This kind of lack of information repeats itself throughout the book. Luckily it is out of print so you won't have to suffer...

A beginners look at hardanger.......2001-08-22
This is my first book on hardanger after doing some basic stitches from a kit. I am excited by the many projects in this book because they are so different from the usual table runners, etc. that I've seen in other books. The pictures of the projects are great and there are clear pictures of the completed stitches in both the stitches section and projects section. However, there are some problems with the instructions on how to complete some of the stitches. I became very frustrated with one of them in the stitches section and even though there were better instructions in the project section, at least one stitch never was explained very well. I have not yet done any of the projects, but am truly looking forward to doing some of them. I am glad I purchased the book for the beautiful projects.

Not in the same league as the other titles in the H&G series.......2003-01-29
(i see i'm the first to write a review of this book :) ).
while this book is not in the same league as the other titles in the H&G series, it does have merits.
i was pretty confused and initially +very+ disappointed that the style of kitchens and dining rooms in this book was not largely in the same vein as those depicted in the "Bedrooms & Bathrooms" and "Livingrooms" books -- sumptuous, eclectic, a bit on the traditional side but not stuffy.
the rooms depicted in "Kitchens & Diningrooms" were (disappointingly, to me) more of the modern, minimal, spare types.
after i got over my disappointment that this book was different in the styles it promoted vs. the other tomes i have in the series, i did appreciate K&Ds on its own merits.
as always, there are a lot of interesting ideas that are transferable to smaller budgets and scales, even if its obvious the rooms depicted are scandalously beyond my budget.
i +was+ (and still am) very disappointed that there was a decided dearth of dining rooms represented. i made an allowance for the "kitchen" portion and modernity, but i thought that the "diningroom" section would have more variety.
well, it did have some variety -- but there just weren't very many of them! (at least to satisfy me). i wish the editors would breakout a new book on just diningrooms, because i feel i'm still waiting for that volume from them, however much i appreciated the sampling in this book.
i kept this book, and am not sorry. it just was a bit of a surprise at first, as it's a bit of a jump from others in the series.

Book Description
Stylish and concise, this volume presents the work of six venerable names in modern design history. Featuring more than three hundred examples of their best work, yet still eminently portable, Six Chapters in Design is a charming model of economy. Each chapter begins with an essay by a fellow designer, or poet, or, in the case of Saul Bass, director Martin Scorsese, and closes with a biographical profile. Esteemed by designers around the world, these are the artists who created the identities of Warner, AT&T, IBM, ABC, UPS, and Westinghouse; film titles for The Shining and Cape Fear; posters; advertisements; and memorable images of every sort. Their work, nearly omnipresent in everyday life, has influenced an entire culture. This dynamic compendium is a smart resource for designers and artists working in any medium.

Less was more.......2002-06-22
This book is exactly what I hoped it would be: a visual parade of the works of designers who are arguably considered superstars in graphic design.
The various graphics are seen applied to print (magazine/book/poster), signage, film and sculptural media.
The examples span several decades, from the early 40s to the mid-90s. The great thing about seeing superb design in the years before the 1980s is that design during that period was accomplished without the use of computers; as a result, greater emphasis was placed on composition, shape, typography, color and imagination. The result was design that was simple, bold and highly communicative. It's a far cry from the over-stimulated design that almost everyone with a computer is capable of producing -- and has.
The back of the book contains an index to the graphics with a descriptive label and the year in which each was produced. Each designer's section starts off with a few paragraphs of introductory text, and ends with a brief bio.
The graphics are displayed one per page, and speak for themselves. Designers should pay attention to the message in this body of work.
A good ,allthough basic, overview of the giants.......2001-04-14
I think this book is a fairly good inventory of design works by the giants. Some of the works displayed have dated and it seems there could have been better editorial choices. Nevertheless, i think its a good starter for the begginer, and is a fun way to kill an hour. The print quality is exellent, giving vivid colors, but the cover design is...well- a shame.
monolithic work in the palm of your hand!.......1999-09-29
Great works by the great designers, including my fav. Saul Bass's anatomy of a murder, it's simply a designers inspiration in carry size.Don't strain your eyes - it's picture only.
if your a visual person, this book is for you.......1999-03-22
i say this because theres absolutely no copy. color galore and histories of they're work are covered in full. have fun looking at the greats, i did.

Book Description
First published in paperback by UNM Press in 1976, The Way to Rainy Mountain has sold over 200,000 copies.
"The paperback edition of The Way to Rainy Mountain was first published twenty-five years ago. One should not be surprised, I suppose, that it has remained vital, and immediate, for that is the nature of story. And this is particularly true of the oral tradition, which exists in a dimension of timelessness. I was first told these stories by my father when I was a child. I do not know how long they had existed before I heard them. They seem to proceed from a place of origin as old as the earth.
"The stories in The Way to Rainy Mountain are told in three voices. The first voice is the voice of my father, the ancestral voice, and the voice of the Kiowa oral tradition. The second is the voice of historical commentary. And the third is that of personal reminiscence, my own voice. There is a turning and returning of myth, history, and memoir throughout, a narrative wheel that is as sacred as language itself."--from the new Preface
Kiowa Indian myth, history, and personal reminiscences.
Customer Reviews:
A powerful voice.......2007-01-24
Mr. Momaday's voice in his collection of stories is priceless. He tells of the Kiowa's legends, follows them up with facts, and includes his own reflections on what it means to be Kiowa, Indian/Native American, human. The inclusion of his father's artwork makes this an even more impressive volume.
I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Momaday at a Western Writers Conference where he gave readings from this collection. And, not being a writer myself I felt out of place. It was Mr. Momaday's voice (think James Earl Jones), and his notice of me (the only other Indian/Native American in the auditorium) that mesmerized me. I've been a fan ever since.
Kiowa memories.......2006-07-15
Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, N. Scott Momaday, has compiled a remarkable book of Kiowan myths and stories. Each story is followed by relevant historical and anthropological commentary and by Momaday's personal memories and musings. Taken as a whole, it is the story of the Kiowa tribe during its Golden Age from the 18th to the late 19th centuries. It is beautifully illustrated by Al Momaday, the author's father.
It is a soulful, nostalgic look at a people and way of life that is now all but lost to us. There is much to be learned from Mr. Momaday's thoughts and reflections. There may come a time when our own culture will wane and pass from the earth. If you've enjoyed this book, take a look at The Wisdom of the Native American, edited by Kent Nerburn, which contains orations and essays by Native American leaders. That book is also very good.
Beautifully Written Story.......2004-01-24
In his writing, Momaday creates a vibrant sense of how stories are expressed through living words within vital communities. His brillant blending of mythology, folktales, oral history, historical descriptions, and personal reflections all connect in a fascinating story about finding one's way in life's journeys. The writing is so vivid and the book is so animated that patient readers will connect with what Momaday presents, provided that they choose to share in the reflective silence that he offers on the way to Rainy Mountain.
A timeless journey.......2002-03-04
The Way to Rainy Mountain by N. Scott Momaday; illustrated by Al Momaday. Highly recommended.
Rainy Mountain, a "single knoll [that] rises out of the plain in Oklahoma," is an old landmark for the Kiowa people. It is a land of bitter cold, searing heat, summer drought, and "great green and yellow grasshoppers." It is a land of loneliness, where the Kiowa were drawn after a long journey from the northwest through many types of lands.
The Way to Rainy Mountain is about the journey-in myth, in drawings by Momaday's father Al, in reminiscences, and in historical snippets. All reveal aspects of Kiowa culture, life, philosophy, outlook, spirituality, and sense of self-the beauty and the desolation, how the introduction of the horse revolutionized Kiowa life, the story of Tai-me, and the richness of the word and the past. It is a literal journey as well; Momaday, in Yellowstone, writes, "The Kiowas reckoned their stature by the distance they could see, and they were bent and blind in the wilderness."
This is a small gem of a book, beautifully written, illustrated, and designed. It has moments of insight, beauty, and sadness, as the ending of the Sun Dance, telling as the sun is at the heart of the Kiowa's soul-a soul that survives in every word and drawing of The Way to Rainy Mountain.
Diane L. Schirf, 3 March 2002.
Unique.......2001-01-06
This book is deceptively short: it can be read in about an hour, but you find yourself going back and reading its various passages and thinking about them long afterwards. Momaday tells a story of the Kiowa Indians by tying in three aspects: folklore, actual historical events and his own family history. The book's format underscores this, with the first, folkloric item printed on one page, and the historical and personal reflections in separate paragraphs on the facing page, all set in different fonts. Not meant to be a comprehensive account of the Kiowas, it is rather an attempt to express the author's own feelings and his own view of his heritage. In this he largely succeeds, as he writes poetry in a simple yet powerful prose form. The only shortcoming for me were the illustrations (done by Momaday's father), which seemed to add little to the overall narrative. Otherwise, "The Way to Rainy Moutain" is a very unique and worthwhile book.
