4 out of 5 stars A love story in playful mind games.......2004-10-04

London-based American writer Hoban, who has written 12 novels for adults and over 60 children's books, gives us London-based (possibly American - he's always being taken for a visitor) writer Max who writes "novels that don't sell, children's picture books that do." One of Hoban's novels is the majorly successful "Riddley Walker," but Max is also about 35 years younger than Hoban, so the comparison, invited by his story-within-a-story form, holds and the dedication to a friend, "a.k.a. known as Seamus Flannery," the character who happens to be Max's best friend, reinforces it.

The book opens in 2001 when Max, suffering "blighter's rock," over both his novel and his children's book, collects an unlabeled CD in the mail, and goes to meet Seamus for lunch. Suddenly "the world becomes not there and he has to stop in his tracks while he sees nothing but moving shapes of black. ...He'd like to think it's his mind playing up but this feels as if it's coming from somewhere else. The black shapes are as sharp as double-edged razor blades and Max fears that if he makes a wrong move blood will come out of his eyes and ears and nose and mouth. What would be a wrong move? A wrong thought?"

When the world returns, a foul smelling, ebony-skinned dwarf is writhing on the ground toward him and demanding to be carried. He is heavy, and while no one else can see him, Max has to claim an injured back to explain his posture. With the help of his mind (a major, talkative and sensible character) he places the dwarf as Apasmara, the Hindu demon of forgetfulness and, with a little more help, remembers the CD, an Indian raga. "Lola!" The love of his life, his proudly proclaimed "destiny woman", the woman he loved and lost in less than a year; Lola has sent the raga and the dwarf to wipe his every memory of her.

As his memories flood back, short chapters shift between 1997 and 2001. Then, too, there was a book that wouldn't get started. Max recalls love at first sight, deepening as he and Lola discover a shared world of music and poetry and art. Lola Bessington, self-assured daughter of London aristocrats, half engaged to tall, handsome well-to-do Basil Meissen-Potts, is a bit resistant at first, but Max, convinced of his destiny, wins her.

But there are things she doesn't know about Max. He has a history of falling in love - and out again. "In all fairness he ought to have been wearing a sign that said, IT AIN'T NECESSARILY SO when he appeared in the Coliseum Shop in 1996 and said that Lola was his destiny woman." When he meets the brash and beautiful Lula Mae he succumbs, no, pursues temptation. His mind tries to warn him, Lola tries too, but Max wants what Max wants.

Then, having lost Lola, he's bereft. It's 1997 and suddenly his novel takes off with an artist named Moe who loses the world and acquires a dwarf named Apasmara. Max and Moe dialogue; Moe demanding to know where this dwarf came from, Max confused but sure it has something to do with Moe's as yet unknown actions. Moe wants the dwarf deleted but Max refuses. Returning to his memories, he mourns, but revels in them too. The delicious Lula Mae, the elegant Lola. Both lost. And now his own created character is breaking out of the form he has cast him in.

Once Max has lost Lola the narrative widens to include her separate life. Living in a fashionable London Buddhist retreat, she puts her well-honed mind to work, learning to compose a raga. It will take her years, but we have no doubt Lola will do it. Lola's formidable determination may yet be a match for Max's fecklessness.

Time, memory and reality become increasingly unmoored. The tone is playful and melancholy, humorous and ardent. It's full of musical and literary allusions and metaphysical conundrums. We sympathize with Max and hope he will find and win Lola, but why? He's a cad who only wants what he can't have. Can he change?

Hoban is a marvelous, imaginative and clever writer who makes a simple love story into a meditation on the nature of love, reality and memory, the creative process and spiritual wisdom. Or does he? While some readers will revel in the "emptiness is form, form is emptiness" mantra, others will begin to feel that form overwhelms substance. This reader did a bit of both. Still, it's a playful, charming and buoyant novel, beautifully written, and can be enjoyed on that level alone.

4 out of 5 stars Gourmet Fluff.......2004-08-23

I read this novel largely on the basis of an enthusiastic review in the Washington Post, and it made perfect weekend get-away reading (although it was too much fun to spread out over the whole weekend; I finished it on the first day). It is neither as ambitious nor as accomplished as the Post review suggests, but it is a delightful and intelligent comic romance.

If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children's cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller's stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.

Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it's a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome. --Mark Thwaite

4 out of 5 stars Batman.......2007-10-09

Can't say I understand the whole Batman story entirely yet, but it is very compelling and well written. Very helpful for my Comic Writing Class schoolwork.

5 out of 5 stars Other Books.......2007-09-03

Well, it really doesn't get any better than this. I was hooked on hits from the first time I saw the cover image in a comic shop.

The news media scenes now, are pretty much right out of today, with screaming pundits on the television, American style.

The fascism and violence prompts Bruce Wayne out of retirement. Heartened by the assistance of a young girl, he plans his strategy.

He has one major obstacle.

Superman, who is now a covert special forces operative lapdog.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest tale of batman.......2007-08-14

This book tells the return of Batman in an future where Gotham City is in peace but sudenly appears a new threat, mutants, and they are powerfull and they work like a gang of destruction, you will see the Joker, Superman, Catwoman, Two Face, etc all of them older, cracier and pitiless. Fank Miller give power to the history he is a genius, and the drawing is strange but with a lot of impact and action. If you like batman, you must have this book, and if you never read a batman comic, then when you read this one you will change your mind.

3 out of 5 stars Not For Me (...and possibly not for you).......2007-08-06

I will start by saying that I have enjoyed DC Comics and their heroes for almost twenty-five years. In particular, I have always loved reading about Batman, Robin, NightWing, and anything that was related to the Gotham crime fighting circuit. I couldn't believe that after all these years, I had yet to read what was regarded as one of the best graphic novels of all time. While on vacation this summer, I decided it was time to finally read this classic.

First, the artwork doesn't appeal to me. I know others love it and will defend how wonderful it is. That's fine, it just doesn't suit my tastes and I can get over it provided the story is good. So, is the story good? It's okay. I can definitely see why other people like it, and I appreciate the different approach Miller took to the time and setting, I felt that it was too over the top though. I found myself wondering if this was suppose to be ten years after Bruce's retirement, or forty. I also didn't care for some of the assumptions that are made throughout the story in regards to several characters' pasts. The development and appearance of "Robin" in this novel was weak and pointless, other than to provide a cheap reason for an event (that I won't spoil) that takes place near the conclusion of the book.

Finally, I felt like the book drug on way too long. The brutality of Gotham City and the Bruce Wayne vs. Batman ego struggle was beat to death in my opinion. I could have cared less about the politics of Gotham, which also was repeated time and time again. I didn't feel as though there was a decent balance between those storylines and the ones involving Two Face and Joker.

To wrap this up, I will be honest and say that I did not enjoy this masterpiece the way almost everyone else has. The futuristic story and excessively "dark" setting feel like paths I've been down too many times in too many other books. I am glad though that most seem to have enjoyed the story, it just isn't for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great graphic novels of our generation.......2007-08-01

A friend of mine let me borrow his copy of this and I read the whole thing straight through. Now a year or so later I am buying The Watchmen and this book comes up as recommended. I can't help but buy it. Frank Miller paints an incredible revision of the idea of Batman. His art and story flow so well together. This book has helped to re-define the current definition of a graphic novel. I can't recommend this enough.

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

This was around the time of the massive Bat-craze. The book was a look at all digital and computer art, and that was also the premise of the story.

In the future, the Joker is a computer virus, and the Batman of that time and type has to try and track it down and stop it from doing crazy Joker type things.

        4 out of 5 stars A High-Tech Plot in a High-Tech Comic.......2001-03-30

This hardbound graphic novel by Pepe Moreno is sophisticated and intriguing. Developed in 1990, this book takes the legend of Batman and gives his spirit life in the grandson of Commissoner Gordon, Sgt Gordon. Gotham may be high-tech, but it is still swalloed in crime.

Sgt Gordon is after serious criminals and part of the enemy is not human; but a computer virus established by the Joker himself to cause such havoic in the city. The art work is computer generated and the paper it is produced on is high gloss.

The plot is well developed and even though so many things are going on, it is easy to follow. This comic has some neat little extras after the story that contribut to a well made book just right for any comic fan. A must have.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is Frank Miller's follow-up to his hugely successful Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, one of the few comics that is widely recognized as not only reinventing the genre but also bringing it to a wider audience.Set three years after the events of The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Again follows a similar structure: once again, Batman hauls himself out of his self-imposed retirement in order to set things right. However, where DKR was about him cleaning up his home city, Gotham, DKSA has him casting his net much wider: he's out to save the world. The thing is, most of the world doesn't realize that it needs to be saved--least of all Superman and Wonder Woman, who have become little more than superpowered enforcers of the status quo. So, the notoriously solitary Batman is forced to recruit some different superpowered allies. He also has his ever-present trusty sidekick, Robin, except that he is a she, and she is calling herself Catwoman. Together, these super-friends uncover a vast and far-reaching conspiracy that leads to the President of the United States (Lex Luthor) and beyond.

6599 A.D. The war between the Earth Federation and the Herculean Empire had been over for more than three centuries. The planet in the Hercules Globular Cluster was a cinder; the few descendents of the surviving Herculeans lived on Myraa's World, half a galaxy away, in what seemed to be a religious commune. But on an unnamed planet, deep within the Hercules Cluster, two survivors, father and son, gather their resources and plan reign of terror against Federation worlds. But the woman Myraa has a different vision- one which excludes empires and warring armies. Subtly, she strives to shape events toward a different end. Rising to one the most unusual climaxes in recent fantastic literature, this novel of chase and vengeance depicts a colorful, poetic future which is struggling to overcome its past. Filled with striking twists and vivid ideas, this is space opera at its most modern.

                          5 out of 5 stars Pre-organized food journal.......2006-03-22

I love all three of Chef Kathleen's books. This book is nice because it can serve as a tool for keeping track of how you are doing on your weight loss plan. If you are interested in food journaling and want an organized format this book is great. It also contains some of her wonderful recipes. There are also some nutrition facts and answers to questions emailed to her. It is a tool and will only help if you use it.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for me.......2006-03-17

When I got this book I was a bit skeptical of the idea of using the journaling aspect. As it turns out, this was the most useful part for me. Keeping an honest accounting of what I was really doing towards my goals has been an invaluable tool for me. Since no one else sees it but me I am totally honest and can take a real look at my progress (or lack of progress). Having it in a daybook form also made me feel like someone was along with me for the journey. On top of that, the food is great and very doable for a non-cook such as myself.

5 out of 5 stars My husband and I have lost 125 pounds with Chef Kathleen.......2006-02-06

We lost the weight with her first book Cooking Thin and we also cook from Getting Thin a lot. This day book is great! It has lots of recipes and tips on how to keep going, how to get motivated, how to make exercise, cooking and losing weight pretty darn easy and lots of fun. Every week has a theme and homework assignments with lots of tips for staying on your plan. There's a place to journal if you want to. And you can go on her website chefkathleen.com and join a group of people who are working their way through the book. Chef Kathleen is right there too. It's free and fun.

                          Book Description

Dogs have been our muses, our mentors, and our playful and noble co-pilots. They’ve had a profound influence on us as healers and spiritual guides, and also as co-workers, helping to guide, hunt, herd, search, and rescue. Our bond with dogs is deep and unbreakable, and there’s no better source a reader can turn to for a richer understanding of that complex and wonderful relationship than The Bark.

The Bark began as a newsletter in Berkeley, California, that advocated for an off-leash area where dogs could cavort and play. Within a few years it had become a full-fledged, award-winning glossy magazine that published work by some of the best writers in America today. And as it grew, the magazine embraced a much larger canvas: to cover the emerging phenomenon of “dog culture” that has been developing over the past decade, as dogs have moved out of the backyard and into our homes, communities, and, indeed, the very center of our lives. As editor Claudia Kawczynska writes, “The implications of integrating another species into society’s daily fabric go well beyond how we nurture our dogs. It calls for a revamping of the standard etiquette—respecting the concerns and interests of society at large. This new relationship, along with an appreciation for our rich and unbounded future, comprises what we call dog culture. This is what The Bark set out to chronicle.”

Dog Is My Co-Pilot is an anthology of essays, short stories, and expert commentaries that explores every aspect of our life with dogs. Fifty percent of the material here has never been published before. The book is divided into four sections: Beginnings explores that first meeting, “the initial murmurings when a dog-human relationship is formed.” Pack investigates the theme of “togetherness” and pays tribute to the dynamic of multiple personalities in the canine-human relationship. Lessons examines what dogs teach us, from love to enlightenment. The final section, Passages, reflects on the themes of true friendship, transformation, and loss.

Included are pieces by Lynda Barry, Rick Bass, Maeve Brennan, Margaret Cho, Carolyn Chute, Alice Elliott Dark, Lama Surya Das, Pam Houston, Erica Jong, Tom Junod, Caroline Knapp, Donald McCaig, Nasdijj, Ann Patchett, Michael Paterniti, Charles Siebert, Alexandra Styron, Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, and Alice Walker. In selections that are humorous, poignant, truthful, sometimes surprising, and frequently uplifting, Dog Is My Co-Pilot embraces the full experience of the world’s oldest friendship. For people who love great writing and, yes, great dogs, it’s a book to be both shared and treasured.

4 out of 5 stars Dog lovers can relate to the stories in this book.......2007-07-19

Most of the stories in this book "hit home" with me and I found myself saying "I've had that experience with my dog(s) - I could have written that". Some stories were a little long, just a few I found not as interesting. A good read for dog lovers.

                          5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2007-06-26

If you are a dog lover this should be required reading it is such a great book! It is a little treasure of great writing from some of the best writers ever....I wanted this book to last forever I enjoyed it so much!

5 out of 5 stars A Dog in Every Chapter.......2007-01-28

There's a lot in this book for dog owners--namely, 42 stories on some aspect of dog. Some of the information is factual, but most has to do with relationships--dog to person and dog to dog, the former being much more prevalent. Most any dog owner would gain something of value from this book.

I like the stories from Caroline Knapp, Alice Elliott Dark, and Bonnie Jo Campbell the best. Knapp's and Dark's stories are serious and compelling. Campbell's story about her dog Roscoe, who she comes to believe is a reincarnation of her former and erstwhile fiancé Oscar, is hilarious. The ties between the two are numerous. Even the dog's shortened ear (frostbite) is linked to Oscar's untimely and embarrassing demise.

My pick of three female authors should not be considered unusual in that most of the stories in this book are by females ("A dog is woman's best friend"). Most, also, are about medium- to large-sized dogs. Labs and herding dogs (blue heeler or cattle dog, Border collie, kelpie, and German shepherd) get the most ink.

If you're like me, meaning you often don't do what trainers recommend, you should find some comfort in instances where an owner didn't do what trainers recommend, and things turned out okay. Amusingly, one owner and her dog celebrated their graduation from training by going home and climbing onto the sofa, something the dog had been forbidden to do during the twelve-week training course. The story's message is two-fold: Loving your dog the way you wish is sometimes more important than rules. And since dogs are infinitely variable, what works with one may be useless or even counterproductive with the next.

Many of the owners in this book seem to have dogs who sleep with them religiously. My dogs never have. The closest I've come has been a miniature schnauzer, but even she had her limits and often baled sometime during the night. My current dog's routine, which matches that of the dog before her, is to stay with me until I stop reading and turn off the light. Then she's off to her familiar haunt--a fabric-covered chair near the front door (a nice arrangement, however, for the nights we forget to lock the front door). What these other owners have that I don't I can only wonder. Less body odor or perhaps--we're talking dog here--more?

(I'm giving the book five stars even though I found the formatting (justified, double-spaced text in two columns) at the start of each chapter irritating.)

If you enjoy dogs, you will enjoy this book. It is a perfect book to have by your bed to read a few essays, savoring them, before drifting off to sleep. The essays are well written, in different styles, some humerous, some sad, all enjoyable. I have bought several as gifts for fellow dog lovers.

It makes me want to go out and create a parody of one of these magazines. And these things were so over the top sometimes that this wouldn't be very hard...

An excellent treatment of this genre.

Wow what a great book. The artwork of these old pulps is exquisite. I loved paging through this volume and soaking in all the great images. I do wish they had included more excerpts from the text portion of the pulps, but the outrageous cover art was entertaining in itself. I highly recommend this book.

Well-printed, hardbound, handsome collection of eye-popping cover art and illustrations from men's adventure mags of the 50s through the early 70s. Every kind of trashy, sleazy, paranoid Whitebread-American fantasy is presented here. Hunky guys in torn shirts being attacked by everything the editors could think of: giant ants, rabid weasels, Nazis, Japs, native savages, Leopard Women of the Congo, Commie dominatrixes, you name it. Then there are semi-nude damsels popping out of their tops while being threatened by a similar list of aggressors. Possibly the best one in terms of ridiculousness shows a chuckling Fidel Castro about to burn a tied-up blonde with his cigar. These pictures are so outrageous they go beyond offensive into a strange realm of ironic hilariousness. The only thing more amazing than the subject matter is the fine execution of these paintings. Every page took my breath away as I marveled at the masterful compositions, the deft use of color and lighting, the absolute mastery of anatomy and proportion. I doubt there are any illustrators working today who would be capable of producing work of this calibre, regardless of subject matter.
My one complaint is that the editor, Adam Parfrey, in his introductions to each section, seems to be defending these covers as a sociological document to be examined from a contemporary Politically-Correct feminist cosmopolitan perspective. (One reviewer here called it "Looney-Left commentary," and I feel that needs clarification.) Sorry Mr. Parfrey, but there is no defense for this material. It is what it is, it's horribly Bad and Offensive and Wrong, but it's _SO_ bad it can't be taken seriously. It's so bad it has become good and can only be enjoyed in the way one enjoys B-movies - by laughing at them, because Now We Know Better.
Most of the introductory material in the front of the book was interesting and informative: a few interviews and reminescences of what it was like to work on the magazines in their heyday. But Parfrey's article was mostly the kind of art critic / social critic mumbo-jumbo which hides a lack of ideas behind a fog of contemporary academic jargon. As I read it, I suspected I was actually reading nothing ... and in the final paragraph, when he used "traction" as a verb, my suspicions were confirmed. Mr. Parfrey has nothing of value to say, but he did put together a really great collection of jaw-dropping cover art, and I thank him for that. This book is worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Defines "over the top".......2004-07-07

These magazines were considered the absolute bottom of the barrel when they were published. To be truthful, they're still offensive today. But now they can be examined in terms of sociology and popular culture. If you don't pass judgemnt on their content, you can marvel at the sheer audacity of these publishers! Nothing was too outrageous to be published in these mags - they define the term "raw." Included is the magazine from which Frank Zappa cribbed his famous "weasels ripped my flesh" line.

This book has extemely high production values and fascinating commentary, whether you agree with it or not. Wholesome entertainment? No. Fascinating? Yes!

In becoming better acquainted, through reading, with a man some of my friends have encouraged me to become familiar with, I have found an incredible gift in the form of Hward Thurman, whose message is not only inspiring, but timely, interfaith, intercultural and, most of all one, thatif taken to heart and put into practice, could change the world. I often wonder why such messages are read, spoken from various platforms and then passed over and and remembered only as inspirational words as we forge ahead in the world doing things the same way over and over again.

I recommend the message in this book to everyone who will care enough to not only learn about an incredible human being who was with us for a while, left us with a vision, and challenged us to see things in a new light. I invite us to see the wisdom he shared and put it into action.

It is an autobiography and so we must accept it as written, staying free f rom judgement as to style, etc. It is a man's heart, gifted to those who will read and those whom he has influenced and those who could gain so much from sharing in the vision.

I recently returned to Thurman's autobiography after 15 years. I am developing a course in Composition/African-American Literature. Thurman's words will be the springboard. His prose is elegant and concise; his sensitivity to nature, a poetic model; his expansive spirit, inspirational. Many chapters will serve as exercises for writing; e.g.: his instruction for the preparation of sermons. In fine, his response to life is a guidline for good writing and holy living.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent compendium.......1998-11-22

Thurman stands on his own as a giant. The only weakness of the book is that often the compilers feel the need to tell us what Thurman is going to say.

Not sure so much from Disciplines of the Spirit needed to be reprinted.

I read much of the book during a 12 hour Prayer Vigil and found it very enriching and satisfying.

Howard Thurman's autobiography is a defining, powerful collection of one man's life-stories that inspire family, schools, churches, nations and gives timely revelations into the transforming power of God's grace that spans the many gulfs that we call racial, economic, religious, political lines. This is a must read text.

Consistently written from a space of incredible compassion and profound understanding of the human condition, Dr. Howard Thurman's extraordinary path unfolds as if it were any man's path. He was mentor to the young Martin Luther King, friend and confidante of Mahatma Gandhi, and founder of San Francisco's Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples; all performed while living the experience of a black man during America's most racially turbulent years. Though he comes from a Christian background and is steeped in Christian theology, his understanding is that of the mystic; seeing the heart of truth in all the world's belief systems. Dr. Thurman is not widely known, but should be on the reading list of anyone who seeks insight into how to move the heart into the world. I will never be without Dr. Thurman's guidance in my life again
