Good storyline....Just one flaw.......2007-04-06
This was a good fast paced read...interesting storyline...good characters and many important messages throughout the book....Now while I did enjoy reading this story and if not for 1 thing I would have given it a 5 star rating but the flaws that I found were the amount off typos in the book.. that was something that really bothered me it just took away from a really good story...also the spanish used in the book was also incorrect in some instances.. I would have loved to have proofread the book before it was published..Aside from that, I would recommend this book..
A Thoughtful Work from a Talented Writer.......2006-06-26
In I AM YOUR SISTER, the first novel by Ericka K. F. Simpson. The author has created a brave and genuine protagonist in Symone Holmes, the 18-year-old student athlete and entrepreneur.
A basketball phenom, Symone is graduating high school at the novel's onset and has the world at her fingertips. The top b-ball player in the country, her accomplishments allow the star to have her pick of colleges to choose from. Symone ultimately chooses an athletic scholarship Marian University, not exactly the most notable school in the country, but a small school that will allow her to shine and leave her hometown in Virginia, where she has has more of her share of trials.
Not one to hide her sexuality, Symone came out to her parents to disastrous results. During her crisis, she turned to the Lord, hoping He would guide her through the pain and could help her understand her sexuality. He, along with girlfriend Kidera, has been her rock, whom she turned to in times of need. Through him, she truly believes that "being in love, regardless of who it was, was not wrong." And she has no problem explaining that to the world.
Especially at Marian. When Symone arrives at the school, she quickly makes friends a few of her teammates, including fellow sistahs Jasmine, Christina and Deborah. Their color forms a kinship of sorts -- until Symone's teammates find out she's a lesbian. Some of the once-friendly women shun her. Others pick fights. Her car is vandalized. Through these actions, Symone realizes she only has herself and shuts anyone down who gets too close. Except for Regina.
Regina finds a way to befriend Symone, despite what others have done. She allows Regina into her family life and love life, especially after her romance with Kidera goes sour. The attraction is there between them, but Symone doesn't want to let Regina have the one thing that has been broken time and time again: her heart.
Marian University is a new start for Symone, but can she handle the pressure of everything that comes with growing up?
Simpson's I Am Your Sister is outstanding, a great piece of work that combines love and basketball, sexuality and religion. The author really knows her stuff on and off the court, as the b-ball scenes kept my attention (and I am not the sports type at all). What made it so superb was that you really connected with Symone on a more personal level, and got to know her triumphs and struggles with every page. Her connection with the Lord was one every lesbian questioning her sexuality has had, and it allowed you to endear Symone as a great character. I couldn't put it down.
I now have a new favorite book--and new favorite author, as well.
Good reading!!.......2006-04-02
Ok everyone if you are looking for a book that will keep you intrigued from beginning to the end this is it. I am not one to be emotional but this book had me laughing, crying, and excuse my languaged...pissed off and all. I just could not put this book down. back jacket summary.......2006-03-03
from the back cover of the 9th printing Daw November 1991 paperback edition
Cover art by Richard Hescox
Return once again to Darkover, the magnificent world of the Bloody Sun, with Marion Zimmer Bradley and the many writers devoted to expanding the Darkover universe as, in these all-new stories, they reveal legendry and lore about some of the most fascinating dwellers on Darkover, those gifted with laran, the magical powers of the mind which enable the leroni to raise and control natural forces, to communicate over vast distances, and to exercise countless other special abilities.
From the founding of the Comyn Council to a Terran's first encounter with laran, here are spell-binding tales that will take you from the Guild House to Dry Town, from the Terran spaceport settlement to the heart of Hastur's Domain in this exciting new exploration of Darkover and its mysteries.
Like most anthologies, a mixed bag........2002-01-23
But for the most part, these are enjoyable, reasonably well-written stories. It seemed to me that they got better as the book went along; one of the earlier stories, "A Dance For Darkover", by Diana Perry and Vera Nazarian, was the one true clunker in the lot, one of the worst stories to show up in any of these "Friends of Darkover" anthologies. I can't imagine what Ms. Bradley was thinking when she included it. The characters were two dimensional and behaved in ways that simply made no sense; their actions seemed noticeably forced in order to get the plot where the authors wanted it, rather than flowing naturally from their established personalities. But given that Ms. Bradley DID include it, I must conclude that she saw something in it she liked; there's no accounting for taste.
Some of the other early stories were also a tad weak, but only a tad. And just about everything in the last half of the book was excellent; on balance, I recommend this book highly. We even get a story about Magda Lorne, (one of my favorite canonical Darkovan characters) even if it is a fairly short one that breaks little new ground.
Worth looking for.......2000-10-12
"Leroni of Darkover" is another of Marion Zimmer-Bradley's anthologies edited by herself and written by new writers. It's already out of print, as it was collected in 1991. I wrote a review for another anthology, "The Four Moons of Darkover" but apparently, it doesn't seem to help buyers all that much as I was afraid to give away too much. Instead, indeed it was too little. In this collection, Zimmer-Bradley makes it a point to say that the collection does not include a single feminist tirade, (at that time, a lot of people were getting into issues that got way out of hand, and put too much meaning into things that were meant to be enjoyed). "Leroni of Darkover" is much better and more entertaining than most of the other collections because the contributors have gotten pretty good at their craft. For instance, Dorothy Heydt's story "Avarra's Children" is another short story that involves Marguerida Elhalyn, the Keeper and Donald Stewart, her Terran paxman (who by the way gets sworn to her in "The Four Moons" anthology). They're kind of like the Mulder and Scully of Darkover, and get into the most interesting situations. I looked forward to their continuing adventures (well, when they were still having them, that is). "The Speaking Touch" by Margaret Carter is also okay, mainly because it deals with characters introduced in "World Wreckers," the first Darkover novel I ever read. As for the rest...Did anyone ever miss Andrew Carr when he disappeared? How did Varzil Ridenow find his path to become "the Good?" Are Darkovans great dancers? What does baking bread have to do with laran? There are 20 (yes, TWENTY) stories in this collection, and most of them quite enjoyable. If you can get a copy, it is well worth it, especially for a Darkover fan. Although where you can find a copy is another story...

Feed me good healthy food!.......2007-04-22
3 children all started eating these recipes as babies... now they are all big kids! We loved this book! It will be packed away with the "babys firsts". This is the best way to feed your child. Real food, with real taste, right from the start. The only problem was potential allergy issues.
great for beginners.......2006-08-16
This book would have been so great to have from the beginning, but my son is a bit old for the recipes in it. I would highly recommend it for someone just starting solids. There are so many tasty varieties to try.
Its a life saver..........2006-07-02
I bought this book along with Lorraine Kellys paperback as I hadn't a clue what to feed our baby let alone how! I really wanted our baby to eat fresh healthy foods so that when she could eat the same as her parents we wouldn't have a battle on our hands. Between the two books this one is my favourite.
The book is well laid out with clear and easy to follow guidelines and recipes. Yes, it takes a while to get the cooking done but it saves alot of money and time in the end(compared to processed foods). The recipes are tasty and surprisingly different - apple in mini burgers (which I thought she'd hate - but loved) and clever presentations that make meal times less of a battle. The end of the book includes recipes that all the family can eat.
Annabel doesn't promise your baby will always eat but she does guide you along with her years of experience as a Mother and a cook.
A real life saver for us. You won't be disappointed.
Great book!.......2005-09-01
This book provides great guidelines for preparing and storing baby food. I also like photos in my cookbooks and this book has plenty of them. I can't wait until my daughter gets old enough so that we can try the toddler recipes. Just take note that Karmel is a British author so some of the foods she suggests for babies may differ from what American pediatricians recommend.
For the whole family.......2005-04-01
I saw this book at a friend's house, who just moved back from the U.K. and bought this book there. We both have daughters who are the same age, and spend a lot of time at each others house. After eating several meals together with the kids, I deceided that their food tasted much better than the things I cooked. The first time I made a receipe from the book, my husband came home and was all excited, smelling the flavours before he even entered the house, hoping this would be our dinner. Sadly, not only I had to tell him that I was cooking for our 1 year old daughter, but in addition fight him off tasting the food.
My daughter is now 2 years 3 month old and I am still using receipes on a regualr basis from this book to cook dinner for the whole family.
I highly recommened, especially for first time moms, who wonder what to make for thir child besides steamed carrots and broccoli. Very healthy receipes that taste AWESOME!!!!

Re-publication of Articles from Practical Horseman Magazine.......2007-03-03
I'm sure I overlooked the disclaimer, but it appears this book is a compilation of the series of "Practical Horseman" magazine articles that Ms. Gray authored several years back. Still good information, of course, but I wouldn't have purchased that book had I known that. (I saved the magazine articles to a binder, you see.)
Should be a 4.50, but there's no intermediate step on the stars.......2007-01-29
Let me start by saying, I really think this is a good book to have in one's library. Why? In succinct, but not short or even overly brief statements, Lendon Gray provides chunks of information that neither overwhelm nor talk down to the reader.
Having ridden twice in the Olympics, she knows obviously a lot more about dressage than most of us. What makes this book a pleasure is the presentation. She does it on a straight-forward approach as if talking to someone who is on the same level as her. There is a sense of equality between writer and reader's level of knowledge. In other words, she does not come across as a "I know it all and you know nothing."
All the information throughout the 25 lessons are chunked into small pieces, each comes with a succinct heading that gives the reader a clue as to what she will talk about in the next third or so column. What made this book very useful to me are the images of "right / correctly" and "wrong / incorrectly" applied principles. She details what can be done to correct wrong workings in very good depth, which makes this very useful for either between lessons or for those who do not have the opportunity of working with a dressage trainer on a regular basis.
I can recommend this book for most levels of riding, but believe that as with many books, it will be most useful to those who work in Training through lower Level 2 stages. Advanced Level 2 through Grand Prix riders will be far to knowledgeable to get a great deal of use out of this. But for the majority of riders, I think this book is great and it delivers what it set out to do: teach from start of riding to the first competition. It also provides a great place to go back and figure out "what went wrong" to help correct problems that creep up in riding.
Lessons with Lendon.......2006-06-27
The book is well written so the average person who is either starting out or is early in a riding carrer will benefit. I particularly liked the fact that she believes all basic dressage will help in what ever riding carrer you may wish to take. She spells out the riders total responsiblity verses the horse which I found to be very refreshing. I gave it 4 stars only because it was pitched below where I thought the book was based on the reviews.
Lessons with Lendon.......2004-10-28
This book is a reprint of a series Lendon Grey did for Practical Horseman Magazine some years ago. Excellent book, well done with very clear concepts and goals. The lessons are set up in a very logical order with lots of pointers on how to make the exercises work for you and your horse and what to do if you are not getting the right response. Each chapter ends with a riding challenge. This book is well worth the money, a great resource for student and teacher alike. You will return to it over and over again.
Good book.......2004-08-27
I found this book helpful. It is easy to understand and also has pictures for those who are more visual in their learning process. It covers a lot of the basics, which some need to go back to to help them in the more advanced movements of dressage. Dressage can be very initimidating with the language that is used, but this book explains terminology and concepts. This book also has "Lendons Challenges" which cover the more common errors riders tend to make when doing the different movements. The only fault I found was the majority of horses are wearing flash nosebands. To me this is a fashion of the times and curbs the horses potential.

good reference book to keep handy.......2007-07-13
This is a good reference book to have on hand, whether you're a coin collector or not. Also some good warnings to protect you from common scams. Every well stocked home library needs this book.
US Coins.......2007-01-06
This book is very helpful in telling any coin collector what U.S coins, old and new, should look like. History of coinage is good. I feel the prices given for values of many coins is somewhat high. There are other books for values, but none as good as this one for helping any coin collector learn about our coinage.

Scrap crafts are a great way to use up all those odds and ends and create interesting gifts and home accessories for minimal investment. And naturally we don't want them to look like we just threw them together from leftovers, so it's nice to find a guide that gives them a bit of class. Two-Hour Scrap Crafts features an impressive array of attractive projects in the Victorian vein: plump pillows and delicate lampshades dripping with lace; flouncy valances and furniture covers; button- and shell-encrusted frames and boxes; velvety ornaments; brocaded bags. The designs are stylish and the muted colors appealing, while the time-worn look evokes the feel of Grandma's treasures filtered through today's shabby-chic aesthetic.
Most projects require about intermediate crafting skill, though some are quite simple (such as stitching ribbons and lace onto purchased towels, or turning an old tablecloth into place mats and napkins) and several of the sewing projects demand more experience (including the ruffled dishwasher cover, the heavily embroidered crazy quilt pillow, and the tailored chair cover). Despite being reasonably detailed, the directions leave much open to interpretation, and a general introduction explaining the basics of each craft type would have helped greatly. There are a number of decoupage projects, for example, but the author invariably tells us simply to decoupage the paper or fabric onto our surface following manufacturer's instructions. Several charming projects utilize fabric panels of what appear to be the author's watercolor art, but the instructions call only for "heat-transfer art" with no explanation--how exactly do we get our artwork onto the fabric? Also helpful would have been a rough indication of ease or difficulty: the title trumpets a two-hour time frame, but less-advanced crafters may need considerably more time. It's a shame that more care wasn't taken here, but the lovely photos do show enough detail to make most of the items quite doable, and this is a worthwhile guide nevertheless. --Amy Handy
Book Description
We all save so many things just because we like how they look or they're dear to our heart-a beloved chipped plate of Grandma's; pretty remnants of lace, fabric, and ribbon; and jars full of buttons. Now is the time to gather them up, because with all those "discards" even a novice can make lovely gifts and practical accessories...in only two hours! Turn an old tablecloth into a beautifully matched set of placemats and napkins. Color scan a favorite artwork onto heat transfer paper, iron it onto a pillow, and embellish with buttons and bows. Customize covers for appliances small and large. You'll feel as if you have a treasure trove of crafts supplies-without spending a cent!

creative stuff.......2003-06-30
M's Crane is best known for her amazing one of a kind teddy bears and she brings that expertise into this book. Some projects you've seen many times before, such as the heart shaped pillows. Others, such as the button cards, are fresh and inspiring. There are many innovative purses to be made, just to match a special outfit or just for the fun of it, The lovely pin cushion jewelry box would make a wonderful gift for anybody, but I think a young woman would especially appreciate it - maybe with a special piece of jewelry in it?
This book is good for using up your scraps of stash or for turning that small treasure of fabric you just _had_ to have, (knowing full well it was too small to do anything with) into a wonderful display piece. I recommend the book highly.
It's okay.......2003-03-01
Not really a lot of "scrap" involved here, I ended up buying fabric for one or two projects just so I could try them! It's a pretty book, well written, but I didn't find it as useful as I thought I would. Mary Mulari's books are better, IMHO.

Keeping Memories Alive.......2006-09-15
This was a touching book of the authors using their grandmothers dresses as quilts. There is great information on fabrics, examples and patterns as well as suggestions for other ways to personalize your own quilt.
Scraps of Time: Quilting with Treasured Fabrics.......2006-09-10
I am so pleased with Scraps of Time. This book was written by authors that truly understand the feelings that fabrics from our past evoke, and they have created patterns that will allow me to showcase these fabrics. I especially am pleased that the patterns include both basic piecing and foundation piecing. My favorite patterns are "Dancing Down Memory Lane" and "Sure You'll Wear it Again". I now have a pattern to use my Dad's ties in. I love the sentiments of this book.
Let me Loose on the Prom Dresses!.......2006-08-15
Thank you Ann and Amy for directing me (saving me) on what I can do with prom dresses, prarie skirts from the 70's,those big sleeved, big bowed awful bridesmaid dresses I still have from eons ago, vests from the late 70's and the ties I saved from that "Annie Hall"/Punk Rock early 80's era I went through....Geez! These twins have given me "enthusiasm" not that dreaded,"why did I keep this stuff and what will I ever do with it?" feeling!
When purchasing a quilt book, I look for good directions and details I can understand......this quilt book gets 5 stars from me, because their directions are easy to understand, the pictures are great, and they've walked me down memorylane with all their own memories beautifully written.
The quilt I'll try first is on page 53...."Dancing Down Memory Lane"....I can't wait to get the scissors and rotary cutter out!

GREAT.......2007-08-08
This is truly a good black book. There are so many different styles from so many artists. The book has english AND german (they both say the same thing) because StyleLife is Germany based. There's not too much text only an intro and an interview in the middle. A few of the drawings are a little wack but overall the book is GREAT. I recommend this book for anybody starting out graffiti or exploring new styles of graffiti.
This book is great!!!.......2007-01-12
What more could an avid graffiti writer look for in a book? This has everything! For a person who is always looking for new techniques, this is the graffiti writers bible. I couldnt ask for anything more, (except Blackbook Sessions #2.)
B-boy must!.......2006-08-06
Great book to just thumb through for old b-Boys and reminisce or for true graff heads that appreciate street art.
The Graff in this book is RAW!! .......2006-07-21
If you are into hip hop and graffiti styles from New York, this book is definitely for you. This book will help inspire you to draw some graff of your own. It is good for all those writers that are starting out.
DOPE .......2005-02-07
This book is great for those writers trapped in suburbia, who are the only ones in their area that writes and need some inspiration in their work. Its all blackbook sketches, mostly from european writers, and when i started writing it definately opened my mind as to the capabilities of style, and color schemes, that can be done without paint. Some of the sh*t in there is crazy. I still dont know how that can be done with markers. Some of the tags are really weak though, that crazy euro-style, but 90% of the book is dope. Check it out
Book Description
More than a biography, To the Mountaintop is the history of a turbulent epoch that changed the course of American and world history. Moral warrior and nonviolent apostle; man of God rocked by fury, fear, and guilt; rational thinker driven by emotional and spiritual truth -- Martin Luther King Jr. struggled to reconcile these divisions in his soul. Here is an intimate narrative of his intellectual and spiritual journey from cautious liberal, to reluctant radical, to righteous revolutionary. Stewart Burns draws not only on King's speeches, letters, writings, and well-reported strategizing and activities, but also on previously underutilized oral histories of key meetings and events, which present a dramatic account of King and the movement in the crucial years from 1955 to 1968.
In a striking departure from earlier books on Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement, Burns focuses on King's biblical faith and spiritual vision as fundamental to his political leadership and shows how these threads wove together a "single garment of destiny," making King the most important social prophet of the twentieth century. King is not portrayed as a lone exalted hero, butas the heart of a fabric of principled leadershipthat stretched from his closest colleagues to the movement's foot soldiers on the streets. This book stresses his shaping by other leaders -- heroic figures such as Bayard Rustin, Ella Baker, James Bevel, Bob Moses, and Marian Wright Edelman -- and his conflicted relationships with John and Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.
To the Mountaintop is uniquely powerful in presenting actual conversations between King and others, and in showing how King's public words often revealed his private torment. Burns provides a uniquely realist portrait of King and the civil rights movement by revealing the vital but neglected religious character of the story, and by demonstrating how King profoundly experienced the movement as a sacred mission following a path of liberation and sacrifice pioneered by Moses and Jesus.

A piece of the puzzle.......2006-03-11
