Book Description

“On the way back to the Front I ran over a general.” With this opening line you know that Bartholomew Bandy is back, with a vengeance. It may be 1918 and the war may be grinding on, but Bandy will make a difference. Now he’s in charge of his own squadron of Sopwith Dolphins, but although the hated Hun is pressing fiercely, Bandy’s prime enemy, as usual, is his own Top Brass.

Unable to cope with him, the military commanders post him to Russia, where the Western powers are intervening in the Civil War. Bandy has an exciting spell with the Allied forces in Russia, fighting Bolsheviks, capturing trains, meeting Trotsky, facing Communist firing squads, and, most terrifying of all, being a love slave to the diminutive Dasha Fillipovna.

5 out of 5 stars Historical, yes, but truly hysterical..........2007-01-30

Donald Jack has created a rare thing, indeed, with this series of books that show the true human condition - that humor (and alcohol, apparently) is what makes the most horrible situations bearable. With the grimmest backdrop of the original WWI set of books - no mean feat, given that the series begins in the trenches - Jack keeps you in hysterics regardless, touching on semi-suicidal parachutes, dabbling with the wives of staff officers, baroque dentistry, pigeons, and other seemingly ludicrous subjects with grace, aplomb, and almost ritual silliness. When you throw historical accuracy in the mix as a bonus, well, it's a practically irresistible package. Poignant, incisive and wonderfully belly-laugh inducing.

5 out of 5 stars Best in the Series.......2006-06-30

My fav in the series of excellent historical fiction (the history is quite accurate, but it isn't the focus), it is full of ups and downs emotionally as well as aeronautically. The Bandy papers are very high on my list of great books since I came across them in my HS library in Carleton Place, Ontario (which could double for Beamington). Sad that so few Canadians are aware of these books. Guess it doens't fit with current trends.

If you are into undiscovered gems, check this series out. At least the first 6 books. Vol 7 was ok, 8 (Hitler vr. Me) was disappointing. Have not read the 9th yet.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read........2002-04-03

I've read the entire Bandy series, and though they are all great, this is the best.

A fabulous ride from the first sentence, you will laugh out loud and excuse yourself from any shared reading room often. The characters are wonderfully written and I swear that no-one does drunken dialogue better than Donald Jack. I'm guessing he has some experience with drunkeness. In an observational role, of course.

Though an even more enjoyable read if you have an interest in vintage aviation or history, this books stands just fine on its own as a terrific work of humourous fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A bittersweet ending to the original trilogy.......2000-04-07

Not to give anything away, but a wonderful meld of the usual comedic grace with a poignant touch of tragedy. You'll be laughing and crying and enjoying throughout.

I'm fortunate enough to have the entire series. It's a pity most are out of print now. This series would make an excellent BBC - style television series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Wolverine vs. Sabretooth in years!!.......2005-06-26

Return of the Native is also a return to a more `traditional' Wolverine story than those presented in Brotherhood or Coyote Crossing. Once again tormented by his past in the Weapon X program and lack of memories, Logan has to battle to save another runaway from the program, the beautiful and mysterious Native.

The basic story line is solid, and Robertson's art is brilliant as always, but the true reason for the five star rating is the battle between Wolverine and Sabretooth. Never before have I seen such graphic violence between the two! It was brilliant, showcasing their true contempt for each other. And just when we as readers are able to almost accept Sabretooth as `just' another Weapon X program bad guy, he reminds the world what a truly horrible, rotten person he is at the end.

This is one of the better Wolverine graphics in years, and it gets my highest recommendations. Just a quick word of warning, the violence is VERY graphic and the mature topics make it unsuitable for younger readers, but for the rest of us, it's perfect!

2 out of 5 stars Goodbye to romance.......2004-11-27

Wolverine has found his perfect match (The Naitive), and as always Sabretooth wants to spoil his fun, by killing his girldfriend.

The story does not show anything new, we have seen better battles between Wolvy and Sabretooth, and like I said before she's not the first girlfriend on the run.

Naitive the caracter that gives porpuse to the story is far from original, as a matter of fact it's just another she-wolveriene wanna-be.

Wolverine has been drawn by some of the best artist in the field, this is far from the case, if you want a cool Wolverine (one with a costume), look for Marc Silvestri or Kubert.

5 out of 5 stars The first and best collection of James Blish's adaptations.......2004-04-24

James Blish was a science fiction writer who wrote over 27 novels, including "A Case of Conscience" for which he won a Hugo Award and one of the earliest Star Trek novels "Spock Must Die!" He also adapted the original Star Trek novels for a series of Star Trek Readers in the late 1960's and proved himself to be as good at novelization, or whatever we call it in this case, as anybody I have ever come across. The details he puts into the stories, without adding anything new to the actual tale, are amazing. Just read the beginning of his version of "The Trouble with Tribbles" where he talks about how the "harmless" little creatures.

The first volume in "The Star Trek Reader" series brings together volumes 2, 3 and 8 of the original "Star Trek" paperback series into one volume and what is arguably the best of Blish's efforts in this series in his version of "The City on the Edge of Forever." It is actually really and truly Blish's version because he takes what he thinks is the best of Harlan Ellison's original script and the teleplay of what actually aired way back when. Blish admits this was a tricky thing to try and manage and fretted that he might owe apologies all the way around. What Blish is able to salvage is mainly Ellison's original conclusion, although we know Harlan would have liked it if the character of Trooper had made it into Blish's version. But certainly it is a valiant effort.

The other episodes from "Star Trek 2" are "Arena," "A Taste of Armageddon," "Tomorrow Is Yesterday," "Errand of Mercy," "Court-Martial," "Operation--Annihilate!" and "Space Seed." If I remember, correctly, the rationale behind what episodes were included in each volume had to do with their relative popularity, which explains why you have several first-rate episodes in this particular volume. Blish was an excellent writer, who died well before his time, and his adaptation of the Star Trek episodes prove that it was the stories rather than the specific effects that made it a special series. From "Star Trek 3" we have "The Trouble With Tribbles," "The Last Gunfight," "The Doomsday Machine," "Assignment: Earth," "Mirror, Mirror," "Friday's Child" and "Amok Time." "Star Trek 8" provides "Spock's Brain," "The Enemy Within," "Catspaw," "Where No Man Has Gone Before," "Wolf in the Fold," and "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky."

With not only "The City on the Edge of Forever" but "The Trouble with Tribbles," it is easy to make the case that "The Star Trek Reader I" is the best of the four volumes. "Space Seed," "Mirror, Mirror," and "Amok Time" are also episodes that tend to pop up on a lot of the Top Ten lists by "Star Trek" fans. In the old days, when the original "Star Trek" was in syndication in your market, if you were lucky and videotapes were way in the future, these books by Blish were pretty much all a lot of us had. So the only way to really enjoy the episodes was to collect the paperbacks with these adaptations. Now we just have to get these books reprinted again for the next generation of Trekkers to enjoy because in many ways they hold up better than the original series (better special effects in your mind's eye).

5 out of 5 stars Great original series stories.......2003-05-21

This book is quite a collection from the old series, including The Arena and Trouble with Tribbles. Gotta have this as an addition to any Trekker library.

Tapas are more than savory appetizers. "They represent a style of eating and way of life," says Penelope Casas, whose Tapas: the Little Dishes of Spain presents more than 300 recipes for the mouth-watering morsels. "So very Spanish, yet adaptable to America," she says, "they cross the line into what we think of as first course or main course dishes."

In chapters such as Tapas in Sauce; Marinades, Patés, Salads, and Other Cold Tapas; and Tapas with Bread or Pastry, Casas provides a definitive selection of the traditional Spanish bar food--dishes to pass out at a gathering, to serve on a buffet, or to make a party of. Readers wishing an introduction to this versatile food, and the culinary culture in which it thrives, will want this bestselling book.

The recipe array is vast. Sauce or ragout-like tapas include Shrimp and Mushrooms in Almond Sauce, Scallops with Cured Ham and Saffron, and Veal Meatballs in Spicy Chorizo Sauce. Endives Filled with Salmon and Shrimp Melon and Apple Salad are two examples of the many tantalizing cold tapas. Prawns Grilled with Garlic Mayonnaise, Lamb Brochettes, and the Three-Layer Omelet, a mixed-egg and vegetable tortilla, are hot-from-the-stove, show-stopping tapas. Including eight pages of color photos, a glossary of ingredients, menus, and a list of recommended Spanish tapas bars, the book is a complete tapas tour. Cooks at all skill levels will find dozens of these tasty little morsels to make and enjoy. --Arthur Boehm

    Book Description

Penelope Casas, who introduced the classic little dishes of Spain to American cooks more than twenty years ago, now gives us a splendid updated edition of that seminal book—with fifty exciting new recipes and eight full pages of new color photographs showing tapas in all their glory.

Here are all the appetizer dishes that have long been a tradition in Spanish cuisine—mélanges of seafood in aromatic sauces; little ragouts of meat, sausages, beans; colorful salads and marinades; the omelets called tortillas that enclose a variety of tasty tidbits; banderillas, zesty combinations on skewers; and empanadas, savory delights encased in pastry. The new recipes Casas includes reflect the influence of the innovative cooking in Spain today—dishes seasoned with soy sauce or balsamic vinegar; ingredients wrapped in flaky phyllo pastry; accents of goat cheese and arugula; foie gras in elegant presentations.

With Spanish cooking at the forefront of today’s cuisine, this “exceptional book by the leading American authority on the foods of Spain” (as Craig Claiborne dubbed it in 1985) is a must for every adventurous cook in America today.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-02-03

This book is great, it has all the recipes I was looking for, except one, Baked Goat Cheese in Tomato Sauce. I had tapas party at my house and all of the food was gone. I made 7 dishes, there were 4 of us and polished everything of. Plus three pitchers of Sangria. We are skinny too and normally do not eat like that, it just the food was so good.

    4 out of 5 stars A good book, but . . ........2007-01-10

This is a very good cookbook, with many recipes ranging from very easy to more complicated. If you are entertaining and want to add a bit of style to your appetizers, get this book. I only wish it would have had more pictures. There are only a few photos in the middle, and the vast majority of dishes have no accompanying picture. I like to see ahead of time what the dish should look like. But, don't let that stop you. This is a very good cookbook and is a standard reference in my kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Book by Casas!.......2006-10-23

Along with Foods and Wines of Spain, this book is one of a handful I keep as my culinary bibles! If you have ever had a fantasy of a perfect cocktail party -- of those cinematically perfect affairs with people in their Sunday best and fancy drinks. But instead of the usual dip and chips, you have dozens of little dishes making the rounds and people moaning in ecstasy every time they put morsel to mouth. Well, this is the book you need to make all those sensually satisfying tapas. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Tapas: The Little Dishes of Spain.......2006-08-03

This cook book is well done, has interesting recipes with good little anecdotes. I have already tried some of the recipes and they were well received at a recent party at our home. The stuffed mushrooms and other recipes are really good and received many compliments.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect cook book if you love casual entertaining........2006-01-19

I bought this book when first published and really need to buy a new one as mine is so dog-eared and stained from overuse. When I was single I often entertained friends and family and they were always impressed with these dishes. Tapas are the perfect party food. Many of the recipes can be prepared a day or two ahead and then reheated when guests arrive. I have prepared almost 70% of the recipes in this book and have yet to find a bad one. One of my favorites, gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp) is a sure pleaser. There are many recipes that call for Spanish paprika. Be sure to buy the "smoked" sweet paprika if you want authentic flavor.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good book for what it is, with caveats.......2007-07-12

This book describes, through subjective stories and sometimes rather overly sentimental and repetitious narrative, how to relate to a dog as a thinking, feeling being with a soul of his own, rather than as a furry domestic "object" to be systematically molded by force to man's will.

There's an upside and a downside to this approach. The upside is that Suzanne is clearly a person who deeply loves and cares for her animals, and she desires to inspire others to adopt a similar approach and thus obtain a closer connection with their dog on a deeper and more meaningful level. Based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews of the book here, she is largely successful in this effort. The downside is that this approach is difficult if not impossible to quantify, and as such the book is neither a manual of training nor technique, which Suzanne openly admits. If you have an interest in a specific "behavior problem", this isn't the book you're looking for. However, if you have an interest in the underlying issues and human-canine dynamics that may very well be the source of the "behavior problem", then you'll at least be well on the road to finding your answer here. And given the fact that many "behavior problems" in dogs actually arise because of our own incompetence or misunderstanding of dog psychology, many people (and dogs) would benefit tremendously by our learning to get in touch at some level with "the canine soul".

The one small criticism that I have about the book is that I think Suzanne is rather disingenuous and over-the-top in her blasting of Vicki Hearne. Given the opposite ends "A" and "B" on the scale of approaches to dog training -- with Suzanne at "A" and Vicki at "B", Suzanne's pendulum clearly swings too far to the left at times.

I say this because, all deference to doggie souls aside, they are *still* and will always be dogs. As such, their neurological systems are designed so that they learn MOST EFFECTIVELY through methods that utilize operant conditioning. As Jean Donaldson so appropriately points out in her excellent book "The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs", training methods based on operant conditioning are the widest window that is open to us in this regard and thus, the ones we should use.

This is not to say that one should not also listen to what Suzanne Clothier has to teach us. Because in the end, the absolute best that you can do for your dog is to understand him not only as a thinking, feeling being in his own right, but also how to teach him in ways that he'll best understand.

The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding perspective.......2007-06-08

This is not a cookbook on training a dog. It's not a list of dos and don'ts. Suzanne Clothier gives us insight and understanding and if we're paying attention, helps us to develop a way of interacting with our canine companions that is mutually beneficial. And I think that's the key - the book can give us the tools to develop our own way. Dogs are still dogs and are not humanized. It's worth reading again and again and it's definitely a superb gift.

5 out of 5 stars Bones Would Rain from the Sky: Deepening Our Relationships with Dogs.......2007-03-16

This should be mandatory reading for anyone with a dog and recommended reading for anyone who has to relate to any living creature.

        5 out of 5 stars Changed My Dog's Life.......2007-02-10

I brought home a human- and dog-reactive (aggressive) adult border collie about a year and half ago. He came from an unknown background, had been in shelters on and off for 5 months, and was a mess. I had no idea what to do.

After about a month of wading through countless training books, all of whose philosophies seemed to tout some other "miracle system," I was fortunate enough to stumble onto this one. Clothier's take on my dog's reactions to a frightening world gave me the perspective I needed to help him, rather than frighten him more. Most enlightening was her section about "friendly" dogs who charge at other dogs "just to say hi." Once I could interpret the other dogs' behavior and body language through my own dog's eyes, I could finally help him. I realized that a charging dog - regardless of intention - looked like an attacking dog, at least to Buddy. Knowing this, I could step in, intercede, to protect my dog. This was crucial in giving him the faith that I could handle the tough situations we meet in our day to day walks. Trusting me, he let down his guard, and has become a dog who looks "normal" to those who meet him. We even get "Oh, he's sweet" comments from people on our walks now! He may never be as easy-going as a lab, but I'd say he's 90% of the way to "normal."

"Bones Would Rain from the Sky," along with "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McConnell, should be on every dog owner's bookshelf. The more challenging your dog, the more you need to read these books. And once you've read these, you'll be able to filter out the mush in the other books.

1 out of 5 stars hard to extract the meat of the topic from this book.......2007-01-03

It is no doubt that this author 'loves' animals. That is apparent. What also is apparent is that the author is not a writer. Many chapters started out with a 'subject' of discussion only to find by the end of the chapter the author touched on everything 'but' the subject leaving the reading saying "huh". She vicariously relives too much of her own experience losing her self in it to the point that she forgets what it was that she wanted the reader to gain thus losing the the essence of the point. There is a comparison to famed horse whisperer Monty Roberts, to whom I have personally worked. She is not a monty roberts. I beleive she is a caring individual with a lot of stories just not a writer. I do not recommend this book as a guide to training or understanding dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting read.......2004-12-02

As someone new to the world of numismatics (but interested in Morgans) I was a bit confused by all the varieties, mintmarks, etc. This book explained everything to me. The history is quite fascinating. I am looking forward to getting my first "CC". Overall, a very heplful and well written book.

5 out of 5 stars I hate Morgan dollars, but I enjoyed this book.......2004-09-14

Earning my living from numismatics, I can't afford to miss reading just about any book from the field of numismatics. So, I set myself down for some boring reading since I just hate Morgan dollars. But I was engrossed. Mr Bowers is a capable author as well as a famous numismatist. The history of all U.S. dollars is covered in brief, and then the history of why the Morgan dollar was even minted in the first place. Continues with how the original dies were made and includes portions of letters and notes from the people actually involved. There's intrigue, double-crossing, mystery, and so forth -- all in a reference book about one particular coin. You'd just never expect it. Of course, the remainder of the book deals with minting the coins and then a blow-by-blow for each date and mint in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Succint Description of The Morgan Silver Dollar.......2004-06-11

This book gives a concise desription of both the historical development of Morgan Silver Dollars as well as pratical information in determining the highlights of each Morgan Silver Dollar according to the chronological year. The book is informative and descriptive in its interpretation of the Morgan Silver Dollar. Most important the reading isn't dry but keeps you intrigued, especially the historical data associated with the Morgan Silver Dollar Series. The book is well written and definitely an addition to any numismatic literary collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, invaluable resource!.......2004-04-09

The best information and historical reference of the Morgan series I have read in years!

This book has some good ideas and some not so good. I was disappointed that there was not more detail on how to complete the projects. The book is mostly good for ideas, but not good in telling how to use those ideas.

I have used several of the techniques in this book - and the results have always been dramatic. The book has photographs several variations of the same technique, and none of the items takes very long to do (some of them definitely take over 30 minutes).

                    Book Description

The creative team behind the smash hit Crowns:Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats returns with a glorious tour of the spirit of Harlem—a collection of fifty stunning black-and-white photographs and unforgettable interviews that capture the heart and soul of one of the most famous and vibrant neighborhoods in the world.
Harlem, long known as the epicenter of black cultural life in America, is undergoing a radical change. An unprecedented infusion of hundreds of millions of dollars in development capital is revitalizing the community and transforming a cityscape marred by decades of poverty. In a striking show of exuberance, upscale shops are materializing in once-abandoned buildings, new homes are popping up in vacant lots, and sheets of glass twinkle in place of grim, boarded-up windows. The economic renewal has lured a host of new people to the neighborhood—doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, and even a former president. But it has also posed a threat to many residents who have lived through the worst of times and now fear that they will lose their homes and livelihoods as boom times sweep in.
Spirit of Harlem documents this extraordinary period of transition through the words and faces of newcomers and longtime residents alike. There are reminiscences of Harlem during the 1920s through the 1960s, stories of friends and families gathering at churches, in local shops, and on the streets, and thoughts on what the future holds for the neighborhood.
Millions of tourists visit Harlem each year, and many people in the United States can trace their roots to this legendary area or have read about its remarkable history and impact on American life and culture. In more than fifty stunning portraits and essays, Spirit of Harlem brings all its splendor, rancor, drama, and glamour vividly to life.

The voices of Spirit of Harlem:

“The minute you step out your door, everything in Harlem is in your face. There is a beauty and a poetry in all that . . .” —Lana Turner, real estate broker

“Bubba and me thought Harlem was Heaven, all the lights and the sights. I asked my aunt, ‘Where do all the white people live?’” —Rev. Betty Neal

“When I came up from the subway, I said, ‘Oh man, I'm lost!’ But then I saw the Apollo and it blew me away. I said, ‘Wow, this is it! I’m in Harlem!’ I had never been to Harlem before, but I just knew I belonged here.” —Bryan Collier, author and artist

5 out of 5 stars Spirited Account of a Historical Neighborhood.......2004-06-23

SPIRIT OF HARLEM: A Portrait of America's Most Exciting Neighborhood
by Craig Marberry and Michael Cunningham is a beautiful book filled with two page pictorial accounts of famous and not so famous people and places that make up Harlem USA. Places such as the famed Abyssinian Baptist Church, the Harlem Hospital, to the Harlem YMCA, the Dance Theatre of Harlem to Hats by Bunn. It also serves as a historical account because the author and photographer delve into the heart and soul of Harlem's past that made it the elite capital it was for African-Americans during the Harlem Renaissance. SPIRIT OF HARLEM opens with a foreword by Gordon Parks, which sets the tone for this collection, and is followed by the author and photographer's insight into their first glance of Harlem. This collection of narrations also provides a sequencing of accounts by current and former residents of all ages and nationalities with candid black and white photographs of the subjects highlighted. Most photographs include a building, which serves as a backdrop or a tangible item that is featured in the story that follows. The first person accounts are encouraging, heartfelt and humorous as well as dismal and oppressive.

SPIRIT OF HARLEM showcases traditional and non-traditional professions such as a former activist, an art dealer, artists, a bookstore owner, a chess player, Chief Executive Officers, a choreographer, a nun, an opera singer, a real estate broker and a social worker. Other professions include a fencer, funeral parlor owners, an Asian gospel singer, a Caucasian graphic designer, hair braiders, historians, a journalist, a literary agent, a law firm partner, medical doctors, ministers and church deacon, a photographer, a restaurant owner and spa owners, along with a myriad of other professions.

One of my favorite narrations is by Isabel Powell, the first wife of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The former Mrs. Powell tells a humorous short story of their meeting, her occupation, his father's rejection of her and finally, her feelings upon their divorce. Another is Kevin Taylor, a producer for Black Entertainment Television and his recollection of the Harlem Shake, a gyrating dance that took the teens of Harlem and the country by storm. Finally, Ron Clark, a Caucasian, southern, male teacher who moved from the South to teach in Harlem; his tactics for winning parental involvement and the buy-in from his students.

Some people have a distorted perception of this island within an island but SPIRIT OF HARLEM validates the fact that historically and currently there is much to see, do and learn about Harlem. SPIRIT OF HARLEM is a treasured collectible that provides a journey into a rich past.

This book has fascinating stories of ordinary and extraodinary people. For each person interviewed, there is a picture or 2 and a story told by that individual. The writer did an excellent job at capturing these stories in first person...i felt like I was actually sitting in front of these people and listening to them tell me about a moving incident, their childhood, reflections on life... Some of these stories made me laugh and some made me cry. It was a neat experience to "meet" all these interesting people. The photography is beautiful

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, informative, and moving.......2003-12-07

Spirit of Harlem is a wonderful treasure of a book. Looking at the photographs and reading the interviews is like going on a journey. Your eyes take in every color and every shape; your ears take in every sound, every smell, and you can hear the people's voices, some ordinary, some famous, yet they all ring loud and rise from these pages.

I've never read anything like this book, one that forces you to laugh and cry at the same time. One that opens up your eyes to a world that you didn't really existed. It's a flavor-filled coffee table book bursting with wondrous history. And it truly embodies the human spirit as the voices of people from different races and cultures all share their common bond of living and/or working in Harlem.

The Spirit of Harlem is just that - a spirit of discovery that races through from the pages and causes you to learn things you've never heard before. Even if you've haven't been to Harlem, the book makes you proud and happy to know that such a place exists. This important and heartwarming book is highly recommended.
