Book Description
The award-winning author of
The Mysteries returns with another captivating novel in which modern-day enigmas and age-old myths come together with spellbinding results. Here is an enchanting tale set in a land rich with folklore–and ripe for a rekindling of the old ways.
Nestled on the coast of Scotland, Appleton was once famous for its apples. Now, though the orchards are long gone, locals still dream of the town’s glory days, when an Apple Queen was crowned at the annual fair and good luck seemed a way of life. And outsiders are still drawn to the charming village, including three very different American women.
Enchanted by Appleton’s famously ornate, gold-domed library, divorcée Kathleen Mullaroy has left her cosmopolitan job to start anew as the town’s head librarian. Widowed Nell Westray hopes for a quiet life of gardening in the place where she and her husband spent their happiest moments. And young Ashley Kaldis has come to find her roots, and learns that the town’s fortunes turned when her grandmother was crowned Apple Queen–then mysteriously disappeared.
When a sudden landslide cuts Appleton off from the wider world–and the usual constraints of reality–the village reveals itself to be an extraordinary place, inhabited by legendary beings, secret rooms, and the blossoming of a rare fruit not seen in decades. Most unexpected is a handsome stranger who will draw all three women into an Otherworld in which luck and love will return to Appleton–if only one of them will believe.
Lush with the romance and allure of ancient traditions,
The Silver Bough will propel you into a land where, as in Eden, the bite of a single apple can alter the whole course of reality.
From the Hardcover edition.

Customer Reviews:
Compelling fantasy.......2006-08-10
Lisa Tuttle is a great storyteller. I almost missed my train stop, I was so involved in this book. The book centers on three women, all American, Ashley, Kathleen and Nell. They happen to be in the Scottish village of Appleton just in time for an earthquake to cause a landslide that cuts the peninsula off from the mainland. The earthquake turns things around in Appleton, once famous for its orchards and cider. But in 1950, Ashely's grandmother did not fullfil her role as the Apple Queen, and by the time Ashley arrives, there are no more apple trees at all.
Tuttle brings the magic in gradually through a stranger called Ronan, who turns out to be her grandmother's former fiance--presumed jilted when granny disappeared from the village. Ronan touches the lives of Ashley and Nell as magical creatures descend on the village that becomes totally cut off from the rest of the world. In the end, he ends what seems like a curse on Appleton and restores Nell's life.
The story itself was fresh and original. But I only gave it four stars because Tuttle's language was often crude and flat, which tended to bring me out of the story and make me realize I was just reading a book. It also bothered me that she neatly wrapped up the lives of Kathleen and Nell, but left Ashley, the first character we meet and the catalyst for much of what happens, in limbo. She never really describes Nell, and I envisioned her as an elderly widow until the very end of the book, when it becomes clear she is young and beautiful. A physical description somewhere along the line would have helped.
Still, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
A little slow in starting............2006-07-31
This book was quite entertaining....once I got about half way through! It's worth perservering however, as it builds to a magical climax. Magical reading to you!
Evocative and charming.......2006-07-08
The Silver Bough is a lovely contemporary fantasy, with compelling characters and an interesting use of celtic mythology. It starts out a bit slowly, as we are introduced to our cast of characters, but builds into a compelling read as we are pulled into the mystery of what is going on, and what the relationship of that is to the past. Tuttle is always worth reading, and this book is no exception. If you haven't checked out her other books, I highly recommend them all, especially her recent book "The Mysteries," now out in paperback. If you like Jonathan Carroll, Sean Stewart, and Gwnnyth Jones, give Tuttle a try.
Amazing book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-18
The book starts off definetly with two feet firmly planted in the real world. Ashley is finding her roots and going back to Appleton, Scotland where her granny came from. However, a landslide isolates the dying town. Soon, people are seeing mermaids, kelpies, and ghosts. It might put the town back on the map again, but first someone must eat the golden apple...
A mixture of modern and myth, superbly blended together into a gripping plot.
Charming, well written..........2006-06-03
What a pleasure to read this book! No formula writng here...I didn't want it to end.
A light touch of fantasy, with a little history, myth and good characterizations thrown in.

A Classic Work That Should Be Re-released.......2002-01-06
F. Marian McNeill, in the tradition of Alexander Carmichael (Carmina Gadelica) and Anne Ross' The Folklore of the Scottish Highlands, has done an immense service in her writing The Silver Bough Series. These books are currently out of print, unfortunately. If you can find a copy of the first volume you will not be sorry. Little known are the other three volumes which explore a number of very ancient Scottish customs and beliefs, from Selkirk to Orkney to the Isle of Mull to Aberdeen and Fife, which survive to the present day in many cases. In an era of "Celtic" insta-books some of these classical ethnographic sources are deeply refreshing.
Insight on Scottish Folk Customs.......2000-05-09
This book is excellent for ethnologists and the curious alike! Although it is out of print, it is a book worth finding! Written in 4 volumes, each takes a look at different parts of the Scottish folk beliefs -from witchcraft and second sight, to songs and stories told over time, this book has it all, and in an easy to read-straight forward fashion. Definitely a book for anyone remotely interested in Scotland or non-christian customs!

Book Description
Ancient cosmic visitors to Earth. The destruction of Atlantis. Questions about human evolution. Bigfoot sightings around the world. Researchers like Erich von Daniken, Graham Hancock, Loren Coleman, and many others have raised the questions and proposed alternative theories. In "The Hunt for Bigfoot," author Lisa A. Shiel explores her own theories to answer the age-old question--where did we come from? "Did I enjoy this book? Do I recommend it? Yes to both.a good read." - Dan Fabian, Bard's Ink In "The Hunt for Bigfoot," Katy Gallagher, website designer and would-be anthropologist, and historian Charlie Bergren scour the Earth for proof that current evolutionary theories are flawed. Their quest turns dangerous when Katy is threatened and Charlie vanishes. Katy joins forces with Charlie's son, amateur Egyptologist Rick Bergren, to find Charlie. Plunging into the depths of Michigan's north woods, they tumble into a double-edged mystery-a hidden Bigfoot society protected by an ancient race with highly advanced technology who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets and a mysterious billionaire willing, for his own reasons, to kill to preserve the Bigfoot legend. To stay alive, Katy and Rick must unravel an enigma half a billion years in the weaving. They must find the creatures science says cannot exist. "An exciting, well-researched, rollercoaster ride of a novel-I approached this book with some skepticism, but enjoyed every last page." - Paul Vella, Center for Fortean Zoology "The Hunt for Bigfoot" is the first novel in the Human Origins Series. Watch for the exciting second book in the series-"Lord of the Dead." Regarding the forthcoming sequel, Dan Fabian of Bard's Ink said, "I would be interested in finding out what happens to the characters and this is the best praise for any book."

Monstrously Entertaining!.......2004-11-19
While recently lecturing for the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of Mufon (the Mutual UFO Network), I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Shiel, the author of a new book titled "The Hunt For Bigfoot."
According to the blurb for the book, "Lisa A. Shiel turned a long-time interest in alternative history and archaeology (especially Egyptology) into gripping fiction based on her own unique interpretation of events that have fueled curiosity worldwide."
With a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of North Texas to her credit, Lisa has written what is without doubt (in my own opinion) a lively, exciting and gripping piece of fiction based around the Bigfoot mystery - and a number of other mysteries, too!
The book focuses primarily upon Katy Gallagher, a website designer and would-be anthropologist, and historian Charlie Bergren, who scour the planet for proof that current evolutionary theories are flawed.
Their quest turns dangerous when Katy is threatened and Charlie vanishes. Katy joins forces with Charlie's son, amateur Egyptologist Rick Bergren, to find the missing Charlie.
Plunging into the depths of Michigan's north woods, they tumble into a double-edged mystery - a hidden Bigfoot society protected by an ancient race with highly advanced technology who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets, and a mysterious billionaire willing, for his own reasons, to kill to preserve the Bigfoot legend.
To stay alive, Katy and Rick must unravel an enigma half a billion years in the weaving. They must find the creature science says cannot exist.
If you are even remotely interested in cryptozoology, ancient cosmic visitors, the legends of Atlantis, human evolution and more, then grab a copy of "The Hunt For Bigfoot" by Lisa Shiel as soon as possible.
Book one in the "Human Origins" series, it is soon to be followed by its sequel: "Lord Of The Dead."

the hunt for bigfoot.......2004-01-13
One of the few new books which i really enjoyed. I have an interest in adventure stories, that coupled with my interest in alternatives to main stream science, found a really exciting and deep story line that held my interest until the end. This is a book of 400 pages, and read it cover to cover in just 4 days. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes thought provoking mysteries. It was a fun reading, and I look forward to her next book.

Poodle Clipping and Grooming.......2007-05-16
Another grooming book for my collection. A wonderful book (although not a current 2006/7), it displays great pictures, explores and explains different clipping styles available for poodles. A great book for the beginner to gain more knowledge or a more in depth book for the professional. Black & White print.
Poodle Clipping and Grooming extraordinaire.......2007-05-09
Poodle Clipping and Grooming: The International Reference Has pictures which show every imaginable clipping for you poodle. If it isn't in here it isn't a recognize clipping. It shows you which blade to use on what part of the body. Gives advice on the best equipment. In short everything you need to know to groom your own poodle and start saving all that money you pay the professional groomer.

Awesome book find!!!.......2007-01-17
This book is awesome. The step by step instructions and photos helped guide me through from clipping...bathing...brushing...getting the right equipments down to trims... it's a helpful tool for novices and pro groomers alike. Trust me, it's a wise investment and worth every dollar spent. So for those of you who have it in their hearts to bond and groom your pet and show poodle... this book is it!
the gold standard in poodle grooming.......2007-01-17
I chose this book because it has been known as the gold standard in poodle grooming books for many years. I am just beginning to groom my two standard poodles and this book is very helpful. It covers trimmers and other grooming equipment thoroughly and has a great chart that explains what type of cut each numbered blade provides, for five different brands of trimmers. It includes almost every type of cut you might consider giving your poodle and each cut has great photographs and/or black and white drawings that help you visiualize what you are doing. The book also has seperate sections for how to groom feet, topknot, tail, face, stomach and ears- I have refered to these chapters many times and they have very helpful instructions and tips. I would highly recommend this book, it will be the only one you need-its so complete. Many people are surprised to find that I am grooming my own dogs and they often comment that the dogs look like they went to a professional.
Customer Reviews:
A Little Disappointing.......2000-04-03
I was hoping for something a little different. There are only black & white photos/illustrations which are fine, but not great. Other books with color photos are much more user friendly. I have still not figured out exactly how the book is organized. However, all is not lost. As with some of the other glass books I purchased recently, with time, and a lot of patience, I am sure that I can use this book. I would recommend that an in-person examination before buying. Not recommended for the novice collector, like me.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-05-19
I'm obsessed with Shaker furnitue and architecture. I'll get around to reviewing all of my books in time. I think I have every Shaker book printed!
This one isn't "Complete" but there's an aweful lot in here. I look at "complete" more or less as meaning "most" variety of furniture. I didn't take it literally.
This is one book that gives a lot of weight to Shaker built-ins as well. Of which I'm trying to re-create so I've been referencing this book a lot lately.
I do have other books, some of which focus more on details and drawings with potential variety in drawer configurations for example, others more on color and simple photos etc.
So far it 's been one of my favorites in terms of the wide variety of material it contains. An overall wonderful photo and text reference to existing furniture.
Excellent book, beautiful pictures; but see my warning below.......1999-01-18
Probably because it is one of the newer books on Shaker furniture, this one seems to be the most accurate on the provenance of the many surviving Shaker items. It appears they have done an excellent job of deciphering where a piece was made regardless which village it was found.
THERE IS WARNING HOWEVER! Don't be fooled by what they mean by "The Complete Book." They use the word complete to mean, that in addition to covering the "Shaker Golden Years" of 1830 to around 1850, they have included items from the 18th to the 20th century.
With approximately 400 beautiful illustrations, they can't possibly cover every important piece of Shakerdom. To my disappointment, they did not discuss the particular 12 to 20 foot benches of two slightly differing styles that I have seen pictured in the meeting room at Sabathday Lake. Nor did they show the small wall clock at Sabathday Lake that I wanted to know about.
The authors certainly accomplished their goals of descibing the various, differing forms used by the different locatations over the approximate 150 years covered.
For me the final test is, would I buy it again -- Abosolutely.

Possibly the most slept-on book on the subject..........2005-01-11
This book has been underappreciated since it was released; Perhaps due to it being an european release it really never got the exposure that other books on street art & graffiti have recieved. Not only is the author an extremely well-respected writer , he has been there since day one.
This book documents New York City's phenominal explosion of subway & wall art from the beginning stages to the current development that it is at today. Many writers that deserved credit for their contribution to this artform but never recieved it in other books & magazines are represented here, and the book also shows and discusses the evolution of the letter-forms & the creation and develpment of Style.
I can't tell you how many other writers I've talked to that don't know of this book, and if you were to get any book on the subject, I would say this one is possibly the one with the most information, the best variety of pictures going from old-school to new, and the one most deserving of being brought to light for its merit & worth.
aerosol art and its devlopment..........1999-10-02
A nice, sometimes wordy account of the history of graffiti in the new york culture. Packed full of old school pics (pre 1980?) and writers. Lots of personal anectdotes, (from various sources), and ideas/ideals of aerosol culture, This book is like stepping back to the 70's. Phase 2, (the author) has an interesting, self invented vocabulary that seems complicated at first, but what better to use to describe the emergence of the worlds latest most "dis-understood" (AND IMPORTANT) art/culture? The book works to dispell the myth that spraycan creations are not "graffiti" (the media induced "dis-scription"), but is an artform, a communication form, being squashed by the powers that be (and he presents a fine arguement at that). If you want to learn more about the "aerosol culture", this book is a great start. It is currently out of print, but if you look hard enough, you can dig it up. Hazard one. ugn ohio
