Book Description
In La frontera de cristal Carlos Fuentes is at his best: aggressive, sharp, powerful. With penetrating humor and frank narrative, the nine stories (in this novel) depict the rift that has occurred between the U.S. and Mexico in the last two hundred years. But Fuentes also gives us an insight into the force of Mexican life and culture, and how it has been able to survive in spite of the injustice and corruption in Mexico that have caused so many to seek to immigrate.
Customer Reviews:
Impressive novel about of USA-Mexico present relations.......1997-01-08
In times of NAFTA, the relations between Mexico and USA are very unstables:
indocummented migration, racialism, intercultural commnuciation, etc. are topics
very importants for them, and they're shaped in Carlos Fuentes' La frontera de cristal.
This novelist, maybe most important of today's Maxico and Latin America, give us a
nine shortstories of love, immagination, and hope about of possible mexicans and gringos
cohabitation in north and south of Rio Grande/rio Bravo for to go through the crystal frontier.

C. L. Moore created Jirel, ruler of Joiry, in reaction to the beefy total-testosterone blood-and-thunder tales of '30s pulp magazines, but Jirel is no anti-Conan. She's a good Catholic girl, stubbornly purposeful, relentless in pursuit of enemies or vengeance, hard-boiled and a little stupid, and cannot be distracted by mere physical attractiveness. Indeed, in Jirel's world, beauty = decadence = corruption. Were these stories written today, inevitably Jirel would have a lot of hot sex, but as they were first published in Weird Tales between 1934-1939, sexual attraction is mostly only vividly implied. No loss. Jirel's journeys through unnatural landscapes and her battles with supernatural opponents are still wonderful to read, and though newcomers Red Sonja and Xena are more famous now, Jirel rules as the archetypal, indomitable redheaded swordswoman in chain mail and greaves, swinging her "great two-edged sword."
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-30
Jirel is a woman that would probably have been right at home wandering alongside the various versions of Moorcock's Eternal Champion. Sometimes it seems she takes her opponent out by force of personality as opposed to steel, as the dour bloodnut goes through her various adventures. So, a slightly different take on the whole thing.
The first lady of swords against sorcery..........2005-08-20
"Guillaume's white teeth clicked on a startled oath. He stared. Joiry's lady glared back at him from between her captors, wild red hair tousled, wild lion-yellow eyes ablaze.
'God curse you!" snarled the lady of Joiry between clenched teeth. 'God blast your black heart!'"
In such fashion did Jirel of Joiry, the first female protagonist in the genre now defined as sword-and-sorcery, explode from the pulp pages of Weird Tales in October of 1934. The story, "Black God's Kiss," is the first and finest of the five collected in this book. (The five are essentially the sum of Jirel's legend. A sixth, "Quest of the Starstone," was written to combine Jirel with Ms. Moore's other famous lead, space outlaw Northwest Smith, and is not included here.)
"Black God's Kiss" establishes the tone and theme of Jirel's legend, as well as the basic plot for each tale: she ventures to a strange and/or dark otherworld and, through her spiritual and emotional willpower, manages to survive, gaining not treasure but self-knowledge. A curious and noteworthy detail: though an expert swordsman, Jirel does not fight a single duel throughout the tales. Rather, she herself is the sword wielded against sorcery. ("The face above her mail might not have been fair in a woman's head-dress, but in the steel setting of her armor it had a biting, sword-edge beauty as keen as the flash of blades.")
Ms. Moore's writing is, on the whole, transparent and clean. It does suffer from some of the tendencies common among other writers of the time (longer descriptions than necessary; multiple adverbs; an unhealthy fondness for abstract words--gulfs, vastness, fathomless, etc.). More detail about Jirel as a character--precious little is mentioned of her parentage, childhood, and the nature of her fiefdom--would have been welcome, too. (Then again, the heroine can be said to spring newly forged into the stories' setting--she simply is what she is.) Many of the otherwordly descriptions are vivid and haunting, even by modern fantasy standards. Her willingness not to spoon-feed the reader the precise nature of the powers Jirel encounters (e.g. the light-devil in "Kiss" and the witch in "The Dark Land") is also appreciated.
Although "Kiss" is likely the only one of the five that would be published by a professional magazine today, this is an easily read and worthwhile collection for the serious fantasy fan--and "Kiss" is a must-read. Three fascinating stars.
Before Xena.......2004-04-11
This book is good if you like medieval type fantasy without all the mushy romance or weird and wacky creatures. It may be lacking a bit in minor characters, but the adventures are so vivid that they make up for it. The book casts a dark shadow on the fantasy genre, wholly unlike it's more light hearted successors, but shines through if you're into that sort of thing.
A good story needs characters . . ........2001-04-19
I picked this book up at a Salvation Army store for about 50 cents, and I'm glad that's all I paid. I have no problem with strong female warrior types, but Jirel does not do them justice. As the editorial review notes, Jirel is a little stupid, and it is often her uncontrolled emotions rather than her courage or her bravery that get her out of sticky situations. As a heroin, I just couldn't bring myself to root for her to win. My biggest complaint, however, is the lack of other characters in most of the stories, especially the Black God stories. Moore undoubtedly spent a great deal of time writing 30 pages of description of strange alien worlds, but after the first 10 pages they get a little boring. A good story needs more than one character to keep up the reader's interest. In this respect, the final story in this collection, Hellsgarde, was a pretty good story, and much easier to read because there were several interesting characters.
Lovers of Heroic Fantasy will enjoy this book!.......1998-09-16
Jirel of Joiry is a haunting, powerful fantasy that takes place back in Dark Age France sometime after the fall of Rome. Jirel, with her red hair and two-handed longsword, is the literary ancestor of such present day swordwomen as Red Sonja. The stories are vibrant and bold, depicting their settings very realisticly. In alot of ways, the stories are every bit as good as Howard's Conan stories. My only reservation is that the stories have a very 30's pulp feel to them (probably because that was when they were written). All in all an excellent read.

Customer Reviews:
Celtic cuisine.......2007-09-03
This book is absolutely fabulous!! I served my family a dinner with a Celtic theme for my daughter's 23rd birthday. What a success!! Who knew that the Irish are such good cooks. We had 6 courses and everything was wonderful.
In addition to the wonderful recipes, there is lots and lots of information about the history of the dishes. For instance, when baking Irish Soda bread, make sure to cut a cross in the top of the dough all the way down the sides before baking to insure that all the fairies get out!
Yummy.......2006-10-31
I received this cookbook as a Christmas Gift and have used it several times. Everything I've made so far has been wonderful. The recipes are easy to follow and delicious. There are wonderful pictures and interesting tid bits through out. A great cook book for experts and novices. A wide variety of food and dishes.
Recommended for the novice or the expert cook........2006-04-02
I first checked this cookbook out from the library. I was so impressed I just had to buy it. Page 8 shows Darina Allen with Lana Pringle in a traditional Irish kitchen making Barm Brack. That image took me back to the days of my childhood and the many wonderful memories of summer days spent visiting family in Ireland. Darina Allen does a wonderful job of implementing a heartfelt dose of Irish history into the book. As for the recipes, for the most part they are simple to make, yet tastefully superb!
A wonderful cookbook!.......2006-02-19
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this cookbook and cannot wait to try many of the recipes. It has a lot of history before each section as well as descriptions before many of the recipes to tell where the recipe came from and how it fits into Irish tradition. It had the overall effect of making me feel as if I'd traveled to Ireland and visited the kitchens of chefs and housewives alike.
The only disappointment was that at least one of the recipes I would like to try is written with antiquated measurements (ie. use two stones of flour).
Still, I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Excellent Survey of Authentic Irish Cooking. Buy It........2006-01-28
`Irish Traditional Cooking' by leading Irish cooking school owner, Darina Allen is the fourth Irish-centric book I have reviewed and the second which warrants attention as a sound source for genuine Irish recipes. The other worthy book on this subject is `the Irish Heritage Cookbook' by Irish-American high school teacher and culinary writer, Margaret M. Johnson. Of the two, Allen's book is the more scholarly in that it endeavors to give a relatively complete and authoritative view of the cuisine of all Ireland. While Ms. Johnson's book is very good, it is a much more personal view of both Irish and `Irish-American' cooking.
One area covered by Ms. Allen which are not covered by Ms. Johnson is the native Irish pantry with items such as homemade sausage, homemade vinegar, homemade marmalade, and the like.
It's interesting that the two books take very similar approaches to Irish cooking. Unlike the classic Italian cookbook, neither proceeds by course, but primarily by principle raw ingredient. And, unlike Ms. Allen's great `ballymaloe cooking school cookbook', this book is totally Irish.
Ms. Allen's chapter subjects are Broths & Soups, Eggs, Fish, Game, Poultry, Lamb, Beef, Pork, Offal, Potatoes, Vegetables, Food from the Wild, Desserts, Pancakes, Breads, Oatmeal & Other Grains, Cakes & Biscuits, and The Irish Pantry. In addition to all the recipes, and there are certainly a goodly number for the price, there is an excellent historical foreword by Irish culinary historian, Regina Sexton. There are also numerous heading sections on groups of recipes such as nettles, herrings, eels, and many others. There is also an excellent little Appendices on Irish cheeses and cheesemaking; The Potato and the Famine; and Cooking Pits of the Fianna (Bronze Age sites associated with Ireland's early pre-Christian heroes such as Finn McCool (Fionn Mac Cumhaill)). The number of Irish Farmhouse cheese sources, 48 in all, is truly impressive. Since I suspect almost all of these cheeses are not available at our local megamart, I wish she would have given commonly available French, Italian, or American cheese equivalents.
Almost all of Ms. Allen's recipes seem relatively short in procedure and in number of ingredients. I am very fond of how Ms. Allen has put her ingredients list in the margin rather than above the procedure, and I am also happy that all units are in purely English units, rather than both English and Metric. This is not because I disapprove of Metric. In fact, I prefer it, but in a book for an English or American audience, it is simply easier to read if all units are in our most familiar units.
One of my more interesting discoveries in this book is the almost total absence of yeast baking. In the chapter on breads, there are 23 recipes, of which only three (3) include yeast. All others are leavened with baking power or baking soda plus buttermilk or both. With the great popularity of beer in Ireland, it is odd that there is no more yeast breadmaking, especially with brewer's yeast. While I am very fond of Irish Soda Bread, I find it lacks something compared to a good yeast bread; however, if you are yeast impaired, 20 recipes for chemically leavened quickbreads is a great source for breadmaking.
I am also struck by the large number of recipes using apples in both this book and in the previously mentioned book by Ms. Johnson. The dessert chapter alone gives us 12 our of 34 recipes with apples. Oddly, the Irish notion of an apple dumpling recipe is quite different from the Pennsylvania Dutch recipe of a single peeled and cored apple encased in pastry. The Irish `dumpling' is much more like what we would call a `crumble' or `cobbler', as it is a layer of sweetened apples covered by a pastry layer. One may have to use a little local knowledge for the apple recipes as Ms. Allen recommends no apple varieties for most recipes and when she does, they appear to be varieties native to Ireland such as `Bramley Seedling cooking apples'. I guess Macintosh apples should do fine here.
This book is a real winner if you happen to love mashed potatoes. Among the champ, colcannon, and boxty recipes, there are at least 12 recipes for mashed potatoes, not counting the various recipes for making dishes from leftover mashed potatoes such as griddle potatoes and potato & caraway seed cakes.
Overall, while Ms. Johnson's book has a great selection of recipes, Ms. Allen's selection is even broader, without being more difficult. If all you want is easy recipes, Johnson is excellent. But, if you want a great lyric evocation of the foods native to Ireland, Allen's book is superior.
Book Description
The House Rabbit Handbook coined the term "house rabbit" and continues at the forefront of rabbit care and appreciation. Packed with the collective wisdom of bunny-lovers and charming, candid photos of their pets, this fourth edition keeps pace with a more knowledgeable and demanding readership. This revision includes updated health-care and dietary information, accompanied by diagrams and photo illustrations, and chapters on understanding rabbit language, choosing a rabbit, and safety issues. A new section includes revised recommendations for rabbit space and how to creatively integrate it with human space. Fresh housing options described here include "condos" and "Xpens." Exercise and ways to encourage it is the subject of another new section, covering how the shape of an exercise area can determine whether it's used, along with equipment and stimulating "activities" for rabbits. Also here are improved techniques for litter box training, bunny proofing, lifting and handling, grooming and bonding; behavior insights from expert caregivers; dealing with elderly, special-needs, and disabled bunnies; and much more.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for house rabbit owners.......2007-05-14
If you are only going to purchase one book about house rabbits this should be the one. I have purchased several and taken several out of the library and this is still the first one I pick up when I need information.
Simply the best........2007-03-13
This is the single best written resource for people new to the world of house rabbits.
Puzzling.......2007-02-09
I'm not sure I understand why this book has received so many positive reviews. While the writer clearly has plenty of experience with and knowledge about rabbits, the information is not well organized and is often unclear. For instance, in the section on bunny-proofing your home, she never provides a simple list of the hazards and what to do about each. Instead, she opens with a list of questions and then transitions into a list of solutions--but the lists aren't coordinated. At one point, she mentions a solution for hiding hardwood floors and baseboards, but she never says what bunnies *do* to either. Chew? Scratch? How? I need a list of everything bunnies might damage followed by solutions for each. Another example: In the section about multiple rabbits, she focuses on introducing rabbits to each other but says very little about adopting a bonded pair. Is this better than adopting a single bunny? Why? Is it more or less work, and in what way?
My sense is that the author has been dealing with bunnies for so long that she doesn't quite know how to talk to a beginner--and that the editor doesn't understand the benefit of numbered and bulleted lists.
A must have for rabbit owners.......2007-01-01
As a first time rabbit owner, I found this guide very informative. It is a must have for any rabbit owner.
Guide to living with an urbunn.......2006-12-16
Excellent information. I picked up a stray rabbit the week after Easter, with no clue how to care for him or even what to feed him. The House Rabbit Society people were extremely helpful, via their website and this book. Hallelujah, I now know how to take care of my ebil wabbit! I even learned to get him a sister!

Book Description
Fourth in a continuing series, this handsome portfolio contain ten fine art prints of David Roberts' superb lithographs of Egypt's monumental pyramids and the beautiful landscape of the Sinai Peninsula, selected from Egypt: Yesterday and Today (AUC Press, 1996).Between 1842 and 1849, on the basis of sketches made on the spot and aided by his excellent memory, Roberts produced the drawings that Louis Haghe turned into prints published by Francis Graham Moon. These lithographs appeared in the original hand-painted deluxe edition.
Suitable for framing, they reproduce scenes of the mountain wilderness and the monastery of Sinai and the magnificence of the pyramids of the Nile Valley with an accuracy that today would be called photographic. These high-quality collections of prints celebrate the epic grandeur and fine detail of Roberts' views, in a format that complements his extraordinary artistic achievements.
Customer Reviews:
Follow Emmitt all the way to the Record.......2002-12-29
This is a great book that displays Emmitt Smith's life and football career and his pursuit of Walter Payton's rushing record. The pictures in this book are very good since they are contributed by an official Cowboys photographer. The book also shows another side of Emmitt, his family life, that you probably wouldn't know even if you have been a fan of his for many years. By reading this book you really get the sense that Emmitt is a good man as well as being an extraordinary running back. I would recommend this book to all Cowboys fans and Emmitt fans.
