Not for those who are sick of magic realism.......2001-06-17
This book offers more of the same, from the stereotypal chilli pepper on the cover. It will be a pleasant reading for many, but if you are looking for some truly good and groundbreaking fiction, Latin American or otherwise, you should look elsewhere. The characters are trite, the plot predictable, the ending complacent and bland. Perhaps it may seem surprising that more than a few Latin American readers, myself included, are sick of being portrayed as Boullosa, Isabel Allende, Laura Esquivel and many more writers (both men and women) do. Surprising, but true: if magic realism was, about half a century ago, a very lively and fresh way to look at ourselves (and to tackle the problems of our own varied and contradictory heritages), now there is nothing left of that freshness, the "exotic" locales are just a way to lure bored European and American readers, and the many, many imitators of Garcia Marquez and Carpentier are to them as, say, any "Dungeons and Dragons" hack is to the anonymous poet who wrote "Beowulf".
Challenging material.......2001-04-07
The challenge in this book is certainly not the easy movement of the narrative (quite something in a translated work) but in facing the impact of a "primal scene" on a young girl's consciousness. Unable to confront the reality of what she sees, she plunges into hallucinations (that we might be tempted to anesthetize as 'magic realism') in order to conceal from herself the impact of her experience--disorders in nature intended to prevent (at least subjectively) the re-occurrence of the disturbing sight. Strong stuff. Not for those with a werak stomach!
Sleepless in Tacoma.......2001-04-02
I started to read this book at 9 pm one evening and it kept me reading till I finished it at 4 am. At first it seems a folksy tale but its depth becomes apparent when you realize the price a person, especially a young girl with few opportunities except those of her own making, has to pay to live in what is suffocating comfort. The sense of claustrophobia continually grows until an explosion is inevitable. But that too comes with a terrible price. A very powerful book that was easy to read, in an unusually good translation that moves with fluency and grace. As I said, I couldn't put it down.
Excellent reading.......2001-03-31
This beatiful novel is a must read for any native Latinamerican living away from home and who dreams of going back one day-and not knowing if he/she can do it. The story is very panamerican-this could be anywhere in L.A., not just Tabasco, MX. The story reminded me of 100 Years of Solitude, although it is not as complex and elaborated, and is much simpler in language and style. A great quick read from one of Mexico's best contemporary writers. (If you know Spanish, read the Spanish version, titled 30 An~os).

It is a shame that Edwards hasn't published more books. Taming the Forest King was a highly enjoyable book. Great suspense and romance- Edwards had me guessing until the closing pages of the book about what would happen to Tevra and which beau she would choose. The ending was skillfully done- she gives enough details about the characters' futures to not cause a reader to sob in desperation for more.
One of my early favorites.......2004-06-08
I read this in my early teens, and really loved it. It is well-written, with great characters, easy to read yet effective prose, and a good story. The romance bit of it is also well executed--not cheesy or flowery. I even adapted the first few scenes of this novel into a storyboard for animation back then!
A Book That's Worth Finding.......2002-05-29
This is another out-of-print little gem that's worth finding. I would have given it five stars but some of the scenes seemed to shift abruptly - I don't know if it was written that way or just poorly edited.
This book is a nice blend of fantasy, supernatural and military elements, with a touch of romance to boot. The main character is Tevra who is a Colonel in the Light Cavalry of the Kingdom and who has been sent by the King as Viceroy to resolve the corruption in the misogynistic Forest Kingdom. She is accompanied by her brilliant second-in-command Hetwith, and is aided, strangely enough, by the deposed Forest King, Dard, who is also a wizard. Tevra is a person of high principles who's always defined herself by her military position. The story follows her attempts to familiarize herself with the ways of the Forest Kingdom and handle people and situations totally alien to her training, while dealing with treachery, corruption, rebels, and assasination attempts.
This isn't a massive book - Ms. Edwards was able to create this world and its inhabitants with deft precision. Tevra is slowly revealed to be a person who has triumphed over her origins by making her military career the be-all and end-all of her existence, somewhat to her detriment. As the book evolves, so does she, with the help of the two people she winds up depending on more than she wants.
This is the second book by Ms. Edwards that I've read, and I've enjoyed both of them. I've only found mention of four books written by her, all in the late 1980's, and biographic information about her is almost non-existent. Here's hoping that someday she resumes writing in this genre.
Tidying Up the Forest Kingdom.......2002-02-16
Tevra, a Colonel of the Light Calvary, the youngest regimental commander and one of the highest ranking women in that demanding branch of the service, had been chosen by the King and appointed Viceroy with extraordinary powers to deal with the problems in the Forest Kingdom, a distant and rebellious province. These problems included corruption and mismanagement by the previously appointed governor, famine, disease and unchecked supernatural threats decimating the population. Many of the inhabitants still feel they owed allegiance to the Forest King, the heir of their deposed monarch.
Tevra, aided by her loyal and able second in command, Captain Hetwith, finds herself under magical and physical attack as she deals with bandits and less mundane threats. She had also not counted on the personal attraction she would feel for Prince Dard, the ci-devant Forest King, or the change in Hetwith's previously impeccable behavior toward her. She had, many years previously, taken Hetwith on as a soldier with a less than stellar reputation and by careful handling created a reliable tactician and her most valuable resource. She feels quite lost when his behavior causes a rift between them. Competent as she might be in military matter, Tevra has little experience in understanding her own emotions.
The character of Tevra as a career military officer who has been a very "by the rules" player, is well worked out. Her insecurities and strengths are both displayed as she copes with situations that threaten both her life and her loyalties. Her relationship with Hetwith, who she trusts implicitly to save her life, but whose inner workings confound her, is interesting. Their relationship as commanding officer and subordinate and the conflicts that arise in it are in keeping with both of their characters.
I can't comment on the military aspects of the book from experience, but from the presence of Jenny, the striker, to the uniform, the feel was very British colonial rather than American.
I have no idea what happened that this author stopped publishing, but that she did was fantasy's loss.
An all-time favourite.......2000-08-31
I first bought this book many years ago in a sale and it has been one of my favourites ever since. I have read it dozens of times and enjoy it each time. The heroine is great - strong, but not irritatingly brilliant at everything. The sexual tension is well written as is the action and drama. My only complaint is that at times it jumps scene over a paragraph which can be a bit disorientating. However, this was 99p very well spent! I have never been able to find any other books by this writer, much as I would love to.

"The Murdered Sun" is Star Trek Voyager's premier and most prolific author, Christie Golden's first novel in the Star Trek genre and arguably, among the best of the Voyager novels to date. From this very first novel of hers I found her plot framing, characterizations, pacing and overall writing style to be very enjoyable. Few of the authors during this early period in Star Trek Voyager's run captured the characters as well as Christie Golden does with this novel. Given that continued talent and several other titles in the Voyager series, she was later honored with the opportunity to write the inaugural novels in the Voyager relaunch series, "Homecoming" and "The Farther Shore."
The cover art for "The Murdered Sun" is pretty much standard fare for Voyager at the time, if not below standard.
The premise:
Voyager's sensors indicate a possible wormhole nearby and Captain Janeway is more than eager to investigate, hoping against hope to find a quicker way for her wayward starship to get home. Instead of finding the wormhole, Janeway and crew happen upon the Akerians who are a warlike race and are taking siege to Veruna Four. In order to get to the wormhole, Janeway finds that not only must she protect the innocent inhabitants of Veruna Four but she must risk direct confrontation with the Akerians.
What follows from there is, as stated above, one of the best early Star Trek Voyager numbered novels that is well worth taking the time to read. I highly recommend this novel to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction. {ssintrepid}

I decided give it 4 stars. I've heard alot about Christie Golden's brilliant writing so I tried one of her books. It was bold and strong. I liked science based stories because I've read lots of astronomy books. I enjoyed it.
Solid Story.......2001-08-06
It was nice going back to read this story. Copyright 1996, it shows beautifully the Voyager crew as they were at that time. Certainly, we've learned new things about the characters as the seasons progressed, and later novels reflect this, but these first efforts should not be dismissed just because they may not fit what we now know.
Besides, this one was chock full of references to Chakotay's Native American heritage, which was, in fact, integral to the plot - something sorely lacking in the show after about the second season. For this reason (and also because it's still a Kes-inclusive story), it's worth the read.
Okay, so the plot was a teensy bit predictable (two alien races at war, with a big secret between them), but why is that bad? This is a Star Trek tale, ferheavensake, it doesn't have to be the world's greatest novel. It just has to be a lively and entertaining ensemble story that makes me feel good at the end. Spot on for me, my friends!

I read it a million times, and it's always good. I love Christie, she is such a good writer. This is a great story of "things aren't always what they seem", and has a great, classic Trek message.
Best of the Voyager books.......2000-10-11
I'm amazed to see some negative reviews of this book. It's by far the best of the Voyager series. I'm not a big Voyager fan, but I would be if the characters on TV were as interesting as they are in this book. Golden shows you how good the TV show might have been. If you like Voyager at all, get this book.

I'm a transplanted Louisianan living in the Northeast (though everyone keeps insisting Maryland is the south)! I recently made a couple of recipes from the book for a New Orleans brunch I hosted for some picky eaters (me being one of them). The food was outstanding and the recipes were fairly easy to understand and prepare. Along with my River Road Recipes cookbooks, this one is quickly becoming a favorite.

This is a wonderful cross-section of the cooking of New Orleans. As a native New Orleanian, I can certainly attest to that. The recipes run the full spectrum of easy to hard and a wonderful history of each dish is provided. I made the easy recipe Heavenly Hash and it reminded me of the candy that was sold at DH Holmes department store. The Texans out here ate it up. I also have prepared a roasted asparagus dish that was EASY and FANTASTIC. Something that needs to be mentioned is that Mr. Fitzmorris is a great everyday chef, he has provided many recipes that he has concocted himself. I really enjoyed his Peanut Butter bread recipe. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in eating GOOD food.

Tom Fitzmoris knows his stuff. I've read his columns/blogs/whatever he was writing, since the 1980s. We used to attend (not together) Thursday night wine tastings sponsored by a NOLA shop, and he was always interesting. The only thing I've tried from this book is chicken livers w/ bacon & pepper jelly (p.57). It was just wacky enough to get my attention. And delish! More pages are dog-eared to try once my new kitchen is finished. The book is also a good read for those who like good food. It's like cooking porno.

I read the book from cover to cover - it's an easy read for an informational book. I used it for a good overview and also have a more detailed "reference" book that I refer to if specific problems arise with my cat.
A Rare Success!.......2007-01-25
I have come accross many cat books, dog books, and dog or cat books that are written in a funny style. This is one of those rare books that actually manages to succeed in everything it aspires to!
Not only is this book recent (2004), inexpensive, and hillariously written and illustrated, but it has all of the basic information a cat owner would need in an extremely USEFUL format. Man, how I wish I had this book when I first got my cat! It covers all of the questions other books could easily overlook, such as how to hold a cat, proper grooming, socialization, etc.... The format is just so... organized, it's easy to get an idea of where everything is, and the funny mechanical manual format is brilliantly integrated so that it does not interfere with either readability or clarity.
The only deficiency of this book is the lack of detailed medical information. This is not a bad thing in itself, though, as it allows for a shorter, clearer book. I would strongly recommend you to also purchase a veterinarian-written guide to cat health that covers all of the common medical problems. This would allow you access to information about vaccinations, what qualifies as an emergency or needs veterinary attention, and at-home solutions to medical problems without constantly questioning your vet. Such books include "Guide to a Healthy Cat" by Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, DVM (great, recent, inexpensive book - the only lack is that it doesn't go into as much depth as it should because it tries to be easy to understand), "Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" (a classic, in-depth book about almost every problem you might face - but not very up-to-date as it was written over 10 years ago), or "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats" (excellent in so many ways, but does not go into problems not treatable at home except to tell you when to take the animal to the vet).

I picked this book up because I am a cat lover. When I started reading the book I found myself laughing as well as learning things I never knew about the care and training of my cat. It is formatted to read similiar to a automobile manual, which I thought was very humorous as well as a neat way to organize the information. I think it is a great guide for anybody who wants to learn more about the care and detail of having a feline friend.

Marlene Dumas (Contemporary Artists).......2006-11-05
This book is one of my favourites. In Marlene Dumas, I found an artist that I totally relate to. I find her philosophy on her art practice refreshing and have enjoyed reading her own opinions. I am currently studying art at University, and she definitely is an artist that has gone against the mainstream of traditional drawing and painting techniques.
The layout of the book is easy to read, with many coloured pictures of her work.

This is what I look for in an art book, many large good quality reproductions of the work with a minimum of pretentious text. Let me look at the images first and decide what I think about them, then I can go read what the artist or some critic/historian thinks, not the other way around, as far too many books do.
I like the fact that Dumas does what she feels at the time she does it, so there is a lot of variety in this book, it is not the same piece over and over again. She is not like a lot of artist, simply becoming clichés of themselves at the 1st signs of success, she continues to experiment and try different things, which she is criticized for, however, I think that criticism is short sited. There is something fresh, loose and free about her work that I admire. Granted I don't like her work as much as when I first viewed it a few years ago (reflecting my own development as an artist) but it is still one of my favorite books and I would recommend it to anyone interested in contemporary art.
My only critic comes from my own bias, in that I find some of her content overly simplified clichés of women's issues and feminist theory. .........And I'm annoyed by the fact that If I, as a male artist, created some of the images she's created, I'd be lynched by NOW(or some other WWB-Whiny Women's Brigade as I've coined them) as being a misogynist pig.
A SURPRISE PACKAGE!.......2001-06-29
I had seen a self-portrait done by Marlene Dumas in an art book and it blew me away. I did not know who she was or her main specialty. I knew I had to see more of her body of work... I quickly found this Phaedon publication, crossed my fingers and ordered it. When it finally arrived...I poured over it. It is now a few months later and I am still pouring over it. I particularly like the interviews and personal input Helene has had into the publication – this is her book and her philosophies – she puts herself out there for you to see her and to "get inside her head". The layout is very contemporary which adds to the presentation of her imagery. The reproductions of her work are plentiful and I am impressed with the range of her work through her different "periods". The text is concise and confronting in its subject matter, ranging from her life in apartheid Africa to the freedom of Amsterdam. This book is a must for art students and art lovers alike. It holds the key to an modern artist and, as an art student, has inspired me. I am looking forward to seeing more publications about her current work. I definitely give this book 5 stars – plus 5 stars for a major contemporary artist.

gender, identity, sexual and ethnic violence, and oppression. In the paintings there is always
clear interplay between image and spectator: her models give the impression of observing,
rather than being observed. Suspect, the title of this exhibition and catalog, is just as
wonderfully ambiguous; the show undermines preconceived notions about victims and
executioners while adding to the pool of doubt the idea that these images themselves
might be "suspect ".
The catalog features Dumas ' recent works as well as a series created specifically for her
exhibition. The book includes a long interview with the artist and a collection of her writings.

In 2007 Aernout Mik represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale. Rather than produce a standard catalogue to accompany Mik's acclaimed three-part video installation, curator Maria Hlavajova organized this dense and galvanizing critical reader. Interspersed with provocative black-and-white images from Mik's artworks, Citizens and Subjects looks at the Netherlands as an example of the contemporary Western condition at a time when the demands of "national security," the normalization of violence and the maintenance of high levels of fear and anxiety have become part of daily life in the so-called West. This volume seeks to identify the causes of our current predicament and looks at how our society fails to negotiate the challenges posed by economic globalization, human migration and cross-cultural influence. With contributions by philosophers, social scientists and artists including Marlene Dumas, Aernout Mik, Willem de Rooij and Lawrence Weiner.

Nice to read at the beginning, but more and more egoistic as it goes along.......2006-05-20

As the book progressed, it got more and more egoistic, to the point where it becomes a turn-off towards the end of the book. I am surprised that there was so little mentioned of Hakeem. Shaq's attitude seems to be that since he can score, he does not respect centers who can't score. Whereas he respect Bill Russell. But he does give Kobe his fair share of spotlight. The other book I read was an unabashed hype of Shaq, so this is a big improvement.

THIS IS A BOOK BY SHAQUILLE O'NEAL CENTER FOR THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS. HE TELLS US SOME OF HIS LIFE AND CAREER IN THE NBA. MOST OF THE BOOK CONCERNS WINNING HIS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NBA. HE TOUCHES ON HIS TEAMATES, COACHES AND LIFE IN GENERAL IN THE NBA. I LIKED THIS BOOK AND I LIKE SHAQ, EVEN THOUGH HE IS A BIT FULL OF HIMSELF. HE ENJOYS LIFE AND IS VERY HUMAN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO LAKER AND BASKETBALL FANS.

From all of his interviews and press conferences, I know that he wrote this book and there were very few, if any, editors to "re-write" his book like most athlete autobiographies. This one might not have every sentence punctuated correctly, but he does a great job as a whole. Where else can you get something like this--a diary, essentially--from the store.
The Shaq attack now in Miami...he's changed........2004-07-21
I do agree that some sections he repeats himself, and caught myself wondering if I had read that section already. I do like his conversational approach though as it seems like he's just talking right to you. Nowhere does it mention in the 'laws of book etiquette' that you have to be a prolific writer to release a book.
I've read the whole book and thoroughly enjoyed it and how it gave the readers an insight on how Shaq views the NBA, how the underachieving pre-Jackson Lakers REALLY were, and most rewarding, his upbringing and how his parents raised him.
Don't expect the same Shaq in this book than what he portrays now. As he's contradicted himself a bit in light of recent events regarding his trade to Miami. Nevertheless, I do recommend this book as a casual and humorous read.
