Fred Chappell is an author that can create a story full of southern charm and "gentile folk" but can still have you on the edge of your seat wondering what Jess Kirkman's adventures will bring. His character development allows you to fall in love with Joe Robert while identifying with a man's quest to posthumously know his father. Chappell's books make you want to move to Appalachia and learn to play the banjo, yet contain a subtle and intellectual beauty through his use of language. If you enjoyed books such as MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL and off-beat characters, Chappell is the author for you.

Disappointing.......2004-04-11

I grant that I have not read any of Chappell's other novels (and the bulk of reviews seem to indicate their superiority), but I found this work to be a terrible disappointment. The mystery was not intriguing and the characters were, largely, not compelling. These faults were compounded by poor writing. The dialogue was forced and the language contrived. The use of local idiom profoundly unimpressive. From reading reviews, I was expecting something between Clyde Edgerton and T.R. Pearson but was met instead with something devoid of storytelling grace, depth and Southern charm.

Look Back at Chappell's Earlier Books.......2001-11-06

Fred Chappell is perhaps the best southern writer of poetry and prose alive today. I personally own all of his books still in print. However, this newest novel from him is not as good as his others. I don't mean to suggest that it's bad--Chappell's too talented to write a truly bad book--but I do advise anyone not already a fan to read his earlier work before this one. His novels The Inkling, I Am One of You Forever, and (especially) It Is Time, Lord are brilliantly crafted and honestly interesting. His poetry, for those who like poetry, is a must. He uses southern imagery with a playful eruditeness to create a humorous yet important body of work. Chappell's main strength lies in his love for and dexterity with language. Once again, my advice is to read all his other books and then this one in order to truly appreciate an American master.

Plodding Through the Genre.......2001-09-16

The south will always be fertile ground for a novelists imagination.The atmosphere and the culture seem to call out for exposition. If you enjoy reading this type of novel DO NOT read this one. I recommend Rick Braggs covering of the same territory. Mr Bragg is a good writer.

1 Part Brust, 1 Part Zelazny, 1 Part Bear.......2007-09-06

Mayer Alan Brenner wrote 4 books back in the early 90's. They were a crossover science/fantasy series that combined the magic and smart-aleck wit of Stephen Brust's Jhereg series with the heroic characterization that typified Roger Zelazny's works and the advanced science/speculation of Greg Bear. A bit like Jack Chalker's works, but without the kinky dominance/submission and gender-crossing.

No, for titillation Brenner instead relied on tight plot, counter-plot, counter-counter-plot, twists, turns, counter-twists, counter-turns, and smart talented individual characters you could believe in.

And it worked. The books were good--darn good. Re-reading good. Re-re-reading good. And rumors are they are to be re-released soon. None-too-soon for me, as my copies are wearing out.

Better than Good.......2002-10-16

What can I tell you? Read this guy! I don't know what he's doing or where he is now, but the series is more than worth it. If you like Douglas Adams, Robert Rankin, Roger Zelazny, Greg Costikyan - well, you'll love Mr. Brenner.

My first and best cookbook.......2007-01-22

My mother valued her solitude in her kitchen, and so I didn't know a thing about cooking when I decided to make my new girlfriend dinner. Thanks to this cookbook, the first meal I ever cooked was a cheese souffle, and because of the book's never-fall recipe I looked like a culinary genius. It's now seventeen years later and I'm married to that woman, and both of us still return to this book. When my two children are ready to cook I'll be buying them copies.

It's perfect for my boyfriend who is learning to cook and asked for "cooking for dummies" but I saw this book and the excerpt I read was great so I got it instead.

NOT for beginners. Assumes a lot........2006-03-25

This is overall an excellent cookbook. It's simple, easy to follow, and has good recipes. Not great but good. That being said, this is NOT a book for the absolute beginner. It assumes that you know a lot of basic terminology and technique, which is really stupid considering the title.

The book is marketed for people who don't know how to boil water, and yet on the very first page it tells you to fill a saucepan with cold water and immerse an egg. A SAUCEPAN? I don't know about you, but when I was a beginning cook, I called that particular item "a pot" -- the word saucepan is correct, but you'd need to be a culinary sort of person to know that a saucepan is not a pan at all, that is, not an object which is wide and round but only an inch deep. A novice cook sees the word PAN and thinks of a skillet\spider\frying pan. Most people do; it's an understandable error.

I gave my sister this book and asked her what she'd do when confronted with the instruction to fill a saucepan with cold water and immerse an egg. She went into the cupboard, took out a 14" frying pan about half an inch deep, filled it with water, and stuck the egg in. The egg was about three times as high as the sides of the pan. My sister isn't stupid, she just doesn't know that a saucepan is actually a small pot. Nobody who buys a book titled "How Long Do I Cook a Three-Minute Egg?" is going to know that!

After this, the book goes on with such instructions as, "dice the vegetables finely" ... um, dice? What does dice mean? Oh, it means to chop up? How was I supposed to know that? Into what shape do I chop? How big should the shapes be? How thin is finely? The book says nothing, so if you're unfamiliar with a fine dice, you're screwed.

After that, here's the book telling us "allow to simmer for half an hour" without ever bothering to mention what simmer means. Is it high heat? Low? The same heat I was cooking on before? Does it mean there are bubbles in the liquid? Again, no explanation whatsoever.

As I stated, this is a great book, but I cannot stress enough how it is NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

You cook a 3-minute egg for 3 minutes........2006-03-22

Firstly, I enjoyed this book and its contents. It's great for one of two people. Either a child or possibly someone who's mother has made every meal for them since they were born and have to move out to go to college. Many of the things were far too simple. If someone wanted to make pasta sauce then they want to make it. They don't want to buy a can of some companies sauce and put their own spices in it. Also, the recipies are simplified and can make think taste not as great as you might have hoped. Other than these few things I think it's fantastic and it does have quite a few recipies that are going to be new to anyone most people picking it up.

What I was looking for........2006-02-26

I bought this book as a gift for my grandchild who wants to start cooking. As I looked though it, I was pleased at its contents. It has the basics explained well with recipes that are simple but not so simple as to be boring. Actually my daughter has used it (mother of the child I bought it for)and was pleased with the recipe she used. I would recemmend this book to anyone interested in beginning cooking.

I purchased this handy cookbook for my daughter's 12th birthday. The author has a clever sense of humor and an ability to break cooking vocabulary down into easy to understand words for those previously uninitiated in the kitchen. Now at age 22 and married for a year, my daugther said that she can't find her copy since moving several times and wants another for some of her favorite recipes. The book is not a children's cookbook, but for anyone new at cooking. I'd love to see a repeat printing.

Excellent! It is an interesting scientific book. It is easy to read and it would be very helpfull if you want to live harmoniously with your pet.

Similar Material To Many Other Dog Books.......2007-07-28

The first 1/3 of the book is probably the most interesting. Here Coren describes how dogs experience the world through their senses. As most dog lovers already know, the sense of smell is the most important to a dog and they also have excellent auditory abilities and are able to hear high pitched sounds that humans cannot. In contrast, their sense of sight is less developed and they see fewer colors than people do. I already knew much of this information from other dog books and my own common sense observations. But Coren does cover this aspect of a dog's life in great detail and it has been fun to try to imagine how my own dog is experiencing our surroundings when I take her out on a walk.

The seconds 2/3's of the book is devoted to other topics. Some of these, such as whether a dog has ESP abilities and the aging process of a dog are of only limited interest to me. Coren also discusses traditional views of a dog's mental capacity and how dogs learn, explaining such concepts as classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Again this is stuff I have already read about and there is really nothing new or groundbreaking here. But I do appreciate that Coren is willing to challenge the ridiculous "animals as machines" ideas previously set forth by Descartes and some of the more extreme behaviorists.

However, I am disappointed in Coren's comments on training. He offers the typical suggestions on how to reward positive behavior. But says virtually nothing insightful about how to discourage unwanted behavior. I currently have a very destructive and strong willed 7 month old Shih Tzu. I had previously tried Coren's "time out" concept to very little avail.

Instead what has been of tremendous use are the techniques on how to assert yourself as pack leader in Caeser Milan's "Dog Whisperer" series available on DVD and the National Geographic Channel. I think Coren tends to anthropomorphize dogs, treating them as human children rather than a different species. In contrast, Milan encourages owners to understand how dogs view the world. For example, dogs are pack animals with a strict social hierarchy. Every pack has an alpha dog who serves as leader. In this way dogs are able to alleviate social conflicts and feel safe and secure with their appropriate place in the pack hierarchy. Every human owner needs to make sure they are respected by their dog as the pack leader. Otherwise strong willed dogs, such as mine, will be more difficult to train and more inclined towards negative behaviors. Using Milan's techiniques I have noticed that my dog is not only better behaved but is even more loving and affectionate towards me. I think this is because she now feels more secure that a clear pack leader - me - has been established and she is not experiencing the stress and anxiety brought on an uncertain leadership sitution. This emphasis on leadership and control may seem harsh to people inclined towards building a more egalitarian relationship with their pets. But dogs think differently from humans and are simply more relaxed, happy and better behaved when it is clear that a calm and assertive leader is in control.

As for Coren's book, it might be a good choice for someone who hasn't done a lot of previous reading on dogs. But, for me, there is just too much information that has already been covered and his tips on training are rather weak.

One of the best dog books.......2007-07-09

I am only about half way through the book and already I can strongly recommend this book. The information and insight it provides regarding dog thinking in terms of sight and sound has allowed me to adjust my dog training. It provides fact based information and so rather than just skimming through it, I am taking my time reading it to ensure I absorb all of the information. Based on this I have bought another book by this author.

I don't generally write reviews, but felt a need to respond to Deanne's comments below. No, this is certainly not 'Dogs for Dummies'. This is a book that goes much deeper than 'how to' train your dog. It teaches us not only how dogs think but also helps *us* to think when dealing with the 4 footed that share our lives. Instead of an instant answer or step by step by step guide, this book is a thoroughly useful and fascinating discussion of how our dogs see and react to the world. And with that we are given the tools to further understand and work with our dogs... proving that we too can think :)

If you have read everything ethologist Patricia McConnell has ever written and want to go deeper into the nitty gritty, this book is for you. So many interesting facts, and the theories are thoroughly discussed and explained and examples given. A terrific read.

If I could give it 0 stars I most certainly would........2006-06-22

I had high hopes when I ordered this book, given the many star ratings it recieved, only to be greatly disappointed. This book left a lot to be desired. Too many pages, too wordy, not a book for those in search of a concise how to tell all on the K9. I don't want a book that is hard to decipher when I need a how-to guide with a bit of why. Just wasn't for me and may not be for you....trying to save people the frustration of having to return it, really grateful to amazon for their return policy in this particular case. I got the book so I could improve my photography skills for a online jewelry business. I learned a little about paying attention to shadows, but overall I didn't get a whole lot out of this book.

I thought the book was a little pricey. I always justify my purchases, if the book contains at least one technicial piece of info, I did not know or it's info I was searching for.
So that being said, I justified my purchase.
It's a good informative book and has a lot of pictures as samples or this is the way to make the shot.
I would recommend this book to anyone going into EBAY as a seller.

Excellent for Much More Than Just eBay Photos.......2006-09-06

Using simple, lo-tech language and a wealth of color photos, this excellent book can teach anyone to arrange, light, photograph and even edit macro (closeup) pictures. I bought it sight unseen on a friend's recommendation, and it's even better than I thought it would be.
The instructions are always clear and simple, and every instruction is illustrated with full-color, detailed examples. The results make you look like a professional photographer (or could even make you become one!).
I've bought tons of books on Amazon; but this is the first one I've felt compelled to review, because it's so darn good.

My eBay photos will never be the same.......2006-05-19

Not being a true photographer(strictly for business) I looked through many books hoping I could find one that would help me take better photos for eBay. That's when I stumbled on this little gem. I'm sure this stuff is old hat to photo pros and hobbyists, but to those of us who don't know our f-stops from our brackets, this is a God send. My photos look so much better, that I've gotten compliments from friends and buyers (who'd a thought that!) People ask me what kind of camera I use, settings, etc. and my answer is read "eBay Photos That Sell". If nothing else the chapters of Objective and Subjective photos will help most folks (and don't forget the shower curtain). Simple stuff I know, but it makes all the difference in the world. BUY this book! You won't be disappointed.

Highly Recommended!.......2005-12-23

If one takes a look at the items up for sale on eBay, many of the items have pictures. Some of them are stock photos from the manufacturer's website, but the great majority of them are amateur photos taken with a digital camera. The photographic quality of eBay is usually on the lower end of the amateur scale, filled with distracting elements, flash reflections and a host of other problems. The goal of this book is to teach the reader how to take product photos that sell.

The authors of the book do an excellent job of guiding the reader through the process, from the initial setup to taking the photos, to editing them in software. This is a rather non-technical book, and the focus is definitely on the photography and not the image manipulation aspect of product photography. It is written to be understood by the beginner, but has useful tips for advanced photographers as well.

The book is filled with pictures to provide examples of how to transform an everyday object into a visually appealing photograph. The advice and tips given in the book helps beginners solve the common problems of home photography. It is an excellent introduction to product photography and a valuable reference book that no photographer (or eBay seller) should be without.

I was looking for the book "Fashion Shots" so I entered it in the "Books" section of Amazon.com & this is the result I came up with. There is a photo of the book "Fashion Shots," but the heading to the side of the image is "New Product Shots." The information on Amazon.com is about a book called "Fashion Shots" & the reviews are about a book called "Fashion Shots." I thought this was odd but that it must be the same book. I ordered the book & received a book called "New Product Shots" instead - a completely different (but good) book that I already own. I don't know why Amazon.com has false information about this book but I would suggest ordering elsewhere. I'm deeply disappointed! I've been looking for "Fashion Shots" for years & once again am left empty handed.

And that's pretty much all this book does. And truly I'd be okay with that if it were at all well written or offered ANY real insight into his method. Y'know how reality shows always spend like one-third of their air time repeating stuff they already told you? This book is like that.

The King of Virgin is clearly a marketing genius. Surely there's another book that does him justice.

A Good Read!.......2004-11-04

This book is a handy compilation of observations, hypotheses and speculations on the subject of Richard Branson. Author Des Dearlove freely and frankly admits his debt to several other writers who have probed the Branson story in depth and breadth. There is little if anything original to be found, aside perhaps from the author's style of presentation, which tries hard to be light and deft. Although the book carries you along, its biggest punch resides in the author's list of "10 secrets" of Branson's success. Readers who would like to know in the most general terms what Branson has done and how he has done it, and who are willing to swallow a few clichés in lieu of explanations, will seize upon this book.we think you will enjoy it and, after all, enjoying your work is one of Branson's great secrets.

Brief, unsatisfying and repetitive.......2003-07-18

I believe that Richard Branson is a unique character and that information about his life and business philosophies would make an interesting read. Thus I chose to read this book.

However I was somewhat disappointed. Although I did learn a few things and there were some interesting passages, a great deal of the book consisted of quotes obtained from OTHER biographers and journalists attempting to document Branson's life.

Each chapter concluded with a summary (read: repetition) of the information in that chapter, and dozens of other sections/quotes/anecdotes were obviously repeated in various chapters. Perhaps because of this, it only took me an hour to read the entire book (admittedly I am a reasonably fast reader).

One thing that I can say in its favor is that the book was structured well; there were 10 main sections, each devoted to a different "Branson philosophy" (for example, "pick on someone bigger than you").

In short, although I did get some interest out of this book I am looking for another Branson biography to read because this one fell short of expectations.

Business the Richard Branson Way.......2000-04-25

I suggested that we choose Virgin as a company to research as an MBA Project. Our group used this book as research material. We found it wonderful, and uplifting, exactly what what was necessary for this project. I would highly recommend it to others as well as the book "Losing My Virginity". Virgin is a company that should be studied by US business'executives, its shows you can create an empire - differently!

Light up my Life.......2002-07-21

I purchased this book many years ago when I was desperate to understand how to best use my digital camera, in-doors and take pictures of products that I sold.

This book was a beginning in understanding of lighting. From the book I was able to produce better pictures, but I still needed a better understanding of bulbs, fixtures and background. Once I meet a professional photographer I instantly understood because I ate this book over and over. I was able to ask all kinds of intelligent questions.

Being in a real studio made me understand the limitations and frustrations I was having trying to produce a produce with a white background. Buy this book to understand. Don't think that this will help you bring you to a professional status. I am still looking for that book.

Short and very readable book , but quite illuminating.......2007-02-23

For some reason, most Americans know, or think they know, quite a bit about the Civil War. But somehow the decades before the great drama of the 1860's are little known to most of us. It's almost as if everything between the Revolutionary War and the American Civil War happened under a cloud or in some shadowed universe that sends out very few signals to modern Americans. In reality, the country went through a time of near-chaos as competing political and religious movements battled for the minds and hearts of the American public.

Sojourner Truth, the subject of this biography, experienced a good bit of this social ferment, and the story of her life gives readers a good opportunity to get a grip on this very strange and fascinating period. The author starts with the odd fact that the name and face of Sojourner Truth became very well-known, yet the real story of her life was obscured by her status as a symbol of the Abolitionist movement. The real woman led a surpringly adventurous life, and she did it in the context of a society that supposedly kept slaves, women and rural poor people firmly in their pre-ordained place. The story of how a courageous girl named Katherine, born in slavery and poverty on a Dutch farm in rural New York state, became the free woman and independent thinker called Sojourner Truth, is worth reading for its own sake. But the book also sheds light on the wild side of American religious and intellectual life during her lifetime. While reading this book, I felt like I was really getting two books in one-I highly recommend this book!!

An incredible biography.......2003-11-10

Painter's biography is excellent. She puts Truth in perspective with the challenges of her time. She sheds light on complicated relationships with noteable Abolishionists and with her own children. This book clearly presents the difficult life of one incredible woman who struggles to do her part to free all slaves, gain respect as a woman and be accepted as a human being.

I THINK THIS BOOK IS VERY EDUCATIONAL. I REALLY ENJOYED READING IT. I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT TRUTH. PAINTER WAS A WONDERFUL WRITER. SHE DESCRIBED EVERYTHING TO THE MAX.

A Nearly Perfect Book.......2000-07-24

When I read a book, I want to get a lot out of it, as I enjoy the reading of it. On the second point: this book is engagingly written. The author questions her own motives and information as she constructs a biography of a difficult life to document. We see Painter confront the challenges of performing biography. I found it a compelling literary device. On the first point, the book mixes biography with history and feminist criticism. This interdisciplinary focus produces a highly inviting book. Among other topics, we find out about the details of slavery in the North, 19th century religious cults, and the ways in which feminists and abolitionists of the time exploited Truth for their own gain, as well as how this appropriation of "Truth" continues to the present. On this point, we learn much about contemporary feminism and culture and its need for heroes-especially African American female heroes.

Sojourner Truth?.......2000-03-24

Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol undertakes an interesting challenge as historian Nell Irvin Painter attempts to produce a "historically accurate" biography of a subject that left little evidence of her life. Moreover, Painter takes on another interesting challenge by attempting to analyze the meaning of Sojourner Truth the symbol-a task that requires her to analyze the layers of evidence produced by those who did document Sojourner Truth's life. Is she successful at producing a historically "accurate" biography? Does she successfully "peel back the myth and the legend" in the evidence left by those who documented Truth's life?

I think Painter is somewhat successful at presenting a historically accurate biography. I say somewhat because, on the one hand, she presents compelling evidence assembled from primary sources that document Truth's life-newspaper accounts, monographs, etc. And she obviously has a thorough command of the secondary sources related to Sojourner Truth. What is more, I think that her methodology-what she calls "more or less uncommon research methods"-allows her to reconstruct a version of Truth's life as best as possible. Assembling the pieces of an immense jigsaw puzzle such as this requires great patience and historical skill, both of which Painter exhibits in this work.

On the other hand, her command of the supporting sources, the sources that provide context for her analysis of the primary sources, is a little less complete. For example, as Painter acknowledges, religion-popular religion-is central to understanding American culture. And I think that in this case, one must have a thorough understanding of religion and the Bible to effectively document Truth's life. However, Painter makes at least one glaring mistake in her narrative when she conflates the stories of Lazarus the beggar, and Lazarus the brother of Mary and Martha (p. 127). Painter makes this fundamental error in her analysis of Truth's speech in an apparent attempt to interject an element of "class consciousness" into Truth's abolitionist-feminist discourse. Jesus did not resurrect Lazarus the beggar. Jesus resurrected Lazarus the brother of Mary and Martha, a well-respected and influential patron (the Lazarus to whom Truth refers). Does a gaff such as this mortally wound the entire analysis? Probably not. But, in a book that so heavily relies on "imaginative methods" and "unknowns," it is probably a good idea to have command of the "knowns"-in this case the New Testament.

This analytical error also points to problems in answering the question concerning whether Painter succeeds in "peeling back the myth and legend." Persons who produced the majority of the evidence that Painter uses had a vested interest in Truth the symbol, which eventually led to the perpetuation of myth and legend. Truth is often used to advance causes such as abolitionism and feminism. And while Painter dismisses those who have used Truth the symbol and perpetuated myth and legend, she is left with little without this evidence. In the end Painter concedes that one can not separate the symbol and the person without destroying the "cultural significance" of Sojourner Truth. Cultural significance trumps historical accuracy in the final chapter. And paradoxically, it appears Painter falls into the same trap as her predecessors as she "peels back" the myth and legend. Her analysis on pages 126 and 127 (and in other places throughout the book) strongly suggests that she is adding her own layers and doing to Sojourner Truth, what others-the ones she dismisses-have done.
