Book Description
"Many Pretty Toys is a novel at once about the 1969-1970 era of campus tumult and a narrative shaped by forces just coming into literary and philosophical play during those years. It is to Adams's credit that he makes both sides of this action an extremely interesting story. When student radicals of thirty years ago challenged the authority of discourse, more than current political issues were in question; Hazard Adams's novel shows that our methods of perceiving and writing were forced to change in ways that are of great interest today." - Jerome Klinkowitz, author of Keeping Literary Company: Working with Writers since the Sixties
When Nixon orders the bombing of Cambodia, the resulting protests push a West Coast university to the brink of anarchy, altering irrevocably the lives of students and faculty and disrupting the process of storytelling itself. Through the words of two professors and a communal voice known only as "We," Hazard Adams interweaves the political, literary, and philosophical developments of the time into a story in which generations and their histories meet, as well as literary styles and methods, showing how political and intellectual events play on the consciousness of a range of characters. The spirit here is serious and generous, but not without a satirical element as a communal group attempts to establish an elusive identity. With a remarkable breadth of method, Adams deliberately evades the usual literary classifications.
"We have many novels about the sixties, but few that remember with such care, measure, and maturity. Many Pretty Toys is heartfelt, but also a novel of the mind: of the scholastic temperament struggling to adapt, mentor, and teach in times of great turbulence. Neither an elegy nor an apologia, it comprehends all the paradoxes of trying to know or conclude, and the human need for telling nonetheless." - Bruce Michelson, University of Illinois
"Hazard Adams's Many Pretty Toys echoes and is, in many appealing ways, an update of Lionel Trilling's The Middle of the Journey. Adams's novel does for the tumultuous time of Vietnam-era protest on college campuses what Trilling's novel did for the same world during the radical thirties. The competing voices in Many Pretty Toys both critique and create an academic novel of generous heart and admirable substance." - William O'Rourke, author of Signs of the Literary Times: Essays, Reviews, Profiles 1970-1992

The end of an era(for awhile ).......2007-03-26
After Superman and Batman, the Justice Society was one of the most influential comics from the Golden Age. The first "team" book, the series gave readers the excitement of seeing all these heroes working together, a truly novel experience. The last volume does continue with Broome's penchant for SF themed stories and the art is serviceable with Arthur Peddy continuing the art chores, but the stories lack the fun and excitement found in the middle of the title's run. Circus performers pale in comparison to Brainwave and The Wizard, and after awhile all the time travel and space alien's stories tend to blend together. Roy Thomas writes another informative introduction and the Archives collection is an affordable option to investigate what the Golden Age of comics is about.
Completes the original Justice Society run (in style)!.......2005-12-04
All Star Comics Archives vol 11 completes DC's reprints of the original golden-age adventures of the Justice Society of America, the world's very first superhero team, and it does so in style! Contained herein are issues # 50-57, and they are mostly good reads.
By this time, the comics genre had begun to mature even as the initial sales spikes of the early forties began to fade away. So even though these issues didn't sell as well, they are more contemporary looking than many of the early issues (which are great in their own way, of course). These stories don't seem a whole lot different than the silver-age revivals of the late fifties (which makes sense, because several key creators are the same).
A part of the pre-silver-agey feel is due to stories written by John Broome, the sci-fi writer turned comic guy who famously penned the new Green Lantern about eight years later. He does several stories here with a solid sci-fi slant, including one of the JSA's best adventures (in my opinion, anyway): "The Man Who Conquered the Solar System". Other Broome tales, "The Gun That Dropped Through Time", "The Day the World Ended" and "The Mystery of the Vanishing Detectives" (the LAST golden-age adventure of the original JSA) are all great as well!
And I really enjoyed the introduction by Roy Thomas, a writer who famously revived these characters during the eighties when he wrote "All-Star Squadron" for DC Comics. His affection for the JSA really comes through, and his childhood recollections are fun to read, and touching.

Book Description
Young Andrew and Lian pay a return visit to their old friends in Lost City, a place that served for years as the secret home of a noble tribe of Troodon knights. When they arrive, they find that an elder Troodon has gone off on a crazy, Don Quixote-like quest to prove he's still a great champion. Now it's up to Andrew, Lian, and their Troodon friend Arri to find this old knight and bring him back before he wreaks havoc in Dinotopia. But they may find out that his quest is not so crazy after all--and that the lives of an entire saurian race may hang in the balance. Set in the world created in James Gurney's bestselling illustrated fantasy books, Return to Lost City is an imaginative story of courage, friendship, and adventure.

Good book.......2001-11-30
It's a very good book so far. I'm on page 60. I reccomend this book to ages 9&up.
More Lost Cities, please.......2001-07-05
The Lost City stories in the Dinotopia series are among the best. This one is no exception. My son enjoyed it a lot, though he is starting to outgrow the age group. For others with this problem, try DINOSAUR WARS, by Thomas Hopp, which has a similar feel, though the dinosaurs are not nearly so NICE.

Lightweight and Uneven, But With a Few Gems.......2007-03-07
I'm a fan of DAW's themed anthologies (I even have stories in a number of them), so I was delighted to pick up this book at the train station several weeks ago. Unfortunately, too many of the stories were too lightweight or too cute for my taste and my expectations--wacky anthropomorphisms of animals are just not my cup of tea. The perfunctory author bios and the insider joke story by one author about the editor probably did not improve my mood or my view of the collection. There are a few gems, however, particularly "Flight," by Michelle Sagara West, which has a haunting, melancholy tone, without a speck of cutesiness about it.
Dinos do it.......2005-02-23
I agree with the premise that there is not enough dino fiction. This volume fills the void left by the asteroid impact that obliterated the most amazing bunch of chomping, horn gouging, tail whipping, spike spiking, claw scratching, club wielding, wing flapping beasties ever to grace the planet. I hope there will be another such compendium of dinosauroid literature. But perhaps not. Maybe dino writers have gone extinct too. Then again, there's Dinosaur Wars by Thomas Hopp. Newer and more dino-lightful. So never give up hope. Long live the saurians!
excellent example of dinosaur fiction.......2001-11-07
I've read all the dinosaur fiction collections by martin h. greenburg and this book is one of the better ones, though a couple of the stories are a little hard to follow, they all turned out great, and it has more of a lighter side than his other anthologies( based on dinosaurs), you can also try his other books, DINOSAURS, DINOSAURS 2, and DINOSAUR FANTASTIC, the only thing that bugged me was that some stories are republished in other volumes, good dino fiction is hard to come by, and this is it.

I love this book! I am a beginner at this and this is pretty straight
forward with the recipes, and I didnt have problems finding the ingredients in the supermarket!!!
Good for Beginners & for Experienced Chefs.......2007-06-12
Excellent book, but it's certainly not just for beginners!
This is a great book. Being new to cooking Indian food myself, I have found this book to be really good at explaining some very complicated concepts. It takes the "mystery" out of indian "curry." There are also very few dishes I've made out of the book that haven't turned out well. The recipes are varied, from basic everyday snacks to dinner party menu items. I gave it as a gift to both my mom and my mom-in-law and both were pleasantly surprised to find recipes that they would like to try out.
I highly recommend this both as a gift or if you are ordering for yourself to start cooking.
Hope you get some good eats!
The Indian Cookbook I've been waiting for........2007-04-23
Since I was a little girl I have loved Indian food. Growing up in central Maine, that meant waiting until we visited my grandmother outside Washington DC or an annual day trip to Boston. Gradually Mainers have discovered Indian cuisine and there are now two restaurants within a 30 minute drive of where I live. Sure, it only took ten years....
My mother did whatever a loving mother would do and bought an Indian cookbook. She did her best and made a few recipes. Once I was old enough to cook, she passed on the responsibility to me and I plodded my way through keema mutter. But it was so hard and took so long and was expensive in all the spices I had to buy. Years passed and I came to believe that Indian food was limited to restaurants and would never make a regular appearance in my kitchen.
Now, I'm older and last year revisited the idea. When my partner and I moved in together, our spice collection blossomed. It seemed like we might just have everything we needed minus some lamb and ghee. Therefore I made it known at the holiday season that I would love a basic Indian cookbook.
Behold "the Everything Indian Cookbook!"
These recipes are inviting, easy to understand, and include a very helpful glossary. Everything I've attempted in the first five months has been delicious. Not only that, but I'm cooking more in general which in this day and age means less convenience meals and processed junk. This has led to friends, neighbors, and family taking an interest in Indian food and more entertaining at our house. Add some wine and board games and you have the best darn way to spend a winter in Maine!
So, please buy this book if you are interested in Indian cooking. This is a great starting point for learning the various techniques and most importantly, getting to know the wide breadth of spices that make it all so exciting. Don't worry if you live somewhere where there isn't a "local Indian grocer." I was able to order many staples on-line, found some spices in bulk at our local health food store, and a trip to visit my sister in Waltham, MA, gave me TWO Indian grocers where I found those delicious Alphonso mangoes.
Enjoy!
An Indian food lover's delight.......2007-03-17
This is my new favorite cookbook, for many reasons. For one thing, I never really knew how to use the Saffron that a friend brought me from India, before I read this yummy recipe for Kesari Chawal -- Saffron Rice. All the rice dishes I've made from this wonderful book are fun to create (and eat) because they're simple, tasty, and not at all intimidating. Tonight I'm planning to try the Malabari Coconut Rice recipe. I'm also a healthy food nut, so I love the fact that these recipes are teaching me creative ways to introduce healing spices into my family's diet, like tumeric, which is a natural inflammatory.
I also love the way this author has included the Indian names of every recipe, little stories about the various ways these exotic spices are used, and enticing tidbits about Indian culture and rituals. These little pieces offer practical instructions and a glimpse into Indian perspective and philosophy. You really get the feeling that she's standing next to you, cheering you on.

Monty Roberts' protegee Kelly Marks shows you how to communicate with horses through eye contact and body movements, then shows you how to teach them "the rules" of good behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Teach your horse perfect manners.......2007-04-11
kind of elementary for what i was expecting, but i suppose it would be helpful to someone at that level - all in all it is a pretty good book
Literary treasure.......2007-03-02
You do not need to be a horse whisperer, or even a cowboy to enjoy this book. With Ms. Marks as my guide, I was able to learn things about these animals I didn't know like: "Sometimes you can foresee a negative pattern starting up; for example, when you braid a horse, he realizes that he's going to a show and goes off his feed. If this is the case, change his routine to avoid any anxiety starting." Did you know this?
What do you see when you see a horse? When I see a horse, I see an animal whose ancestors time and time again were the only creatures on earth standing between my ancestors and certain death. And I realize that I might not even be here if it were not for these majestic animals. I do what I can for them knowing that it is enough that I am of value to somebody today. Please support your local SPCA and Equine Rescue Services. Author, Bob Miller
Good, but nothing new.......2007-01-27
I like this book and it has some interesting stories, but if you already participate in a program like Parelli, etc. (as I do) then there isn't really any new information. Buying the book is cheaper, but buying the Parelli DVD program gives you a lot more.
If I wasn't doing Parelli, then this book would be a good start. It would be helpful if there was more trouble-shooting.
Save time & money, this one book will is like having a personal coach........2006-10-26
I have bought scads of books as I bought my first horse and was very hungry for guidance. Many books 'assume' alot about where you are in your progress and experience level and many important facts can be overlooked or touched on briefly without enough discussion. Some books even come right out and say, if you don't know how, don't proceed, etc. Thats a fine how do you do after you just spent $20 for a book entitled the first 2 years!!!!
Horses are big, unpredictable animals. Be smart, spend a little money and get professional help in the beginning. If you are determined to learn everything you can, you will be fine. Don't ever be complacent. Friends and neighbors at the boarding stable are always helpful but noone is perfect or knows it all. If they say they do, run, don't walk! Of all the books on horse behavior, relations between the handler and horse, problem solving, and starting young horses, this one has been the most helpful and complete and sure to stay here in my library for many years to come. I can't recommend it enough.
Wonderful teacher.......2005-12-28
The following is a copy of an email I sent to Kelly recently.
Hello Kelly,
My name is Laura and I live in California...I need to thank you for your inspiration....I purchased your book....How to teach your horse perfect manners....2 months after I purchased an 8 yr old Morgan gelding...He was a barrel racer and had terrible manners....With time and patience and tips from your book i was able to catch him and join up....Also taught him to stand still to be mounted...This even the trainer could not do...Anyway
My husband is interested in a horse that is kept out where i board my Morgan....The new horse is a 6 yr old Quarter horse...When I asked the stable owner if I could work with this horse her response was...."If you can catch him, he is uncatchable"....With patience I caught him.,,,It took 20 minutes but I did it....My husband has no horse experience except to ride a rental horse, so he sat back in awe as I worked this "Uncatchable" horse....I handed my husband the lead rope and said "There you go" He said "You looked like the lady in the book you have" I couldn't have been prouder....We took the horse to the stable and groomed him....He seemed to like it...
So today I went to the ranch...Just me....And went to the horse's pasture...3 minutes later I have the "Uncatchable" horse again in halter....This time we went to the round pen and I have to tell you that we joined up in less then 4 minutes....he so wanted to be with me,,,,he kept turning and looking at me.....but I kept him going for a few circuits then released pressure and turned away.....he walked right up behind me.....and followed me....I cried....
My husband then showed up.(I called him and told him to come). I taught him how to halter and then stepped out of the round pen....the horse Joined up with my husband....I cried again....My husband was literally beaming with pride....He then took the horse for a nice walk around the stables....
I have to again thank you....I can catch the most uncatchable horse at the boarding faciliy thanks to your book.....Much to the amazement of the stable owner,,,,who states she has never been able to catch him.....She said he was a cowboy horse and they had to rope him to catch him.....NOT anymore....Now he is my husbands horse....
Thank you.
Also I may add that a few days later after working with my husband and teaching him the right body language, he was able to approach the horse and halter him, in pasture.
