FOURTEEN ORIGINAL SHORT STORIES OF SECRET AGENTS AND ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE LEFT THEIR MARK ON TIME AND SPACE...
From the true role of the Freemasons to Chronographers who steal pieces of time to an assassin hired by a group that reweaves the threads of history, here are fourteen imaginative tales of time and space and realms beyond our own-all watched over, preserved, or changed by those who work covertly under cover of darkness.

ONE outstanding reason to try a new collection;.......2007-04-30
Tanya Huff has a Terizon short in this book!!!
I love Terizon, Tanya Huff's Arabian-esque thief. This short does not disappoint! Terizon is once again blackmailed by her morals, and the Thieves' Council Three, into a job that no thief should be forced to undertake. Chasing an anti-government conspiracy into the city graveyard, will ghosts spook our brave thief?
Terizon, as all Tanya Huff characters/stories, is smart, funny and completely readable.
Go out of your way to find these hidden Tanya Huff jewels~ They are worth it!
enjoyable suspense thriller anthology .......2007-02-07
The premise of this enjoyable anthology is that covert groups working behind the scenes influence and even cause major events to happen. The fourteen tales run the gamut from suspense thriller to science fiction and even fantasy as the contributors develop secret societies that also range from total controlling to stand-by chronicler/watcher. The entries are interesting though the short story format does not allow for major background development especially of the clandestine societies (this reviewer would not mind several expanded into novellas). Still these are exciting tales whether they have the Freemasons pulling strings, the Scoria changing their existence, the Dancer in Toronto or elves warring in London. Suspense readers especially conspiracy fans especially will appreciate this fine compilation of new stories of covert factions working behind the scenes.

starmen of times past.......2005-09-26
Although the art wasnt done by Tony Harris, the book was very well done. For instance it keeps up with its name sake, this book is primarily about the previous events that happened to starmen. It starts with Jack and Ted but moves on to the Shade, Mikaal and eventually even Gavyn the starman who never made it to earth(so far as I can tell). I was dissapointed that they never had a story focusing on Will Payton(I believe he was the starman of the eighties, but I could be wrong) or the starman of 1951 but this was really good. Its also a book you can read anytime in the series since its made up of one-shots and therefore not directly following the story, so over all you can read the first book and then this one and it wont be too bad, although it may be a good idea to read the books in order either way. All in all I really liked this book and suggest if your a Starman fan, a JSA fan, a James Robinson fan or just plainly like DC books, I think you'll like this one.
Collection of 'Starman' oneshots.......2002-01-04
This book is comprised of several oneshots printed during the latest 'Starman' run for DC comics. Each story deals with an individual from the past who took up the identity of Starman, the hero of Opal City. The stories are interesting, and are a welcome addition to any fans collection who has just started reading 'Starman'. Even though this collection is the 3rd in the series of trade paperbacks, there is a story in it which takes place many issues later.
Learning from the past.......2001-06-27
Throughout Starman's run, Robinson has often taken the opportunity to show what happened in the past to many of the characters in the series. While basically fill-ins, these stories give the reader some insight into these characters and answer some questions that are raised throughout the series, like what happened to The Ragdoll? While some stories are not quite successful (Mikaal's "far-out" disco tale) the stories are pleasant and sometimes unsettling journeys into Opal's past.
For sentimental comics fans everywhere.......1999-07-31
James Robinson loves the past, and in this book it really shows. I's great to see a modern comic writer pick up old character, dust them off, and actually do something constructive with them. The characters are well written, the storys aren't your regular shallow super hero fare, and you can't help but fall in love with the whole thing. If you are a new Starman reader, I recomend starting with the 'Sins of the Father' TPB. You don't really need to read it first, but it certinly helps
Customer Reviews:
Another great fantasy series?.......2005-01-07
I must confess I haven't read any Chalker for ages - I went through a phase of devouring the Well of Souls books, when I developed a taste for complex fantasy which you have to read with one finger in the glossary/map to keep checking not only where you are but WHAT you are in the fantasy world. This book isn't a bit like the WOS books, though having said that it is a kind of prequel, so maybe it isn't representative of the rest of the series. It describes how the world of Flux and Anchor was first set up and the science behind it is truly fascinating. It is similar to the WOS world in that human beings can be drastically altered by interactions with the computers which control their environment. I must admit I did become annoyed at the number of times an intelligent, career oriented female became turned into a simple busty bimbo, but what the hack, in Chalker books it kind of goes with the territory. He probably imagines this stuff is only read by teenage boys anyway!

Customer Reviews:
sugar - sugar - sugar.......2007-09-10
The AHA is another industry vested joke. This book is full of processed sugar, white flour, light/lite this and that (meaning a sugar substitute usually containing aspertame or saccharin is used) and other low fat bastardized poisons. When will the public wake up to this huge cholesterol/low fat/statin drug/heart disease farse. Do some honest research, discover the facts and forget this dogma.
On the other hand...use this book, eat what is recommended, and you'll have so many problems you will not notice any one in particular. I'm sure the junk in the book tastes just fine.
Great suggestions as well as recipes.......2003-05-01
Lots of great recipes that don't have icky ingredients and great suggestions on how to modify your own recipes.
Fabulous.......2001-09-06
This book is fabulous. If I hadn't seen in the title that it was lower in fat and better for you I would have thought the desserts were from the full fat foods. These were easy and tasty.
Low Fat??? Doesn't taste like it!.......2000-11-16
This book is great! As a co-recipe developer on this book I am proud to say that i had a part in the fantastic recipes. Try the pecan cookies or the german chocolate cake. The Orange Bread pudding with sauce is so rich you will need a glass of milk. I have been teaching "fattening" pastry classes for years and this year I replaced a few of the recipes with these and people do not even know. Try it on your family!
Book Description
From Schnauzers to Shepherds, and Dachshunds to Dobermans, dogs are natural meditators.
Meditating with you improves your dog's health and well-being, and makes his tail wag just a little bit wider. It also helps excitable dogs become calmer, aggressive dogs become more loving, and anxious dogs become zen-ishly calm.
Unsure how to start? Let your dog be your guru.
In this "tail," dog-lover and life-long meditator, James Jacobson and his dog, Maui, unleash the simple, non-dogmatic meditation method that they have been teaching and using for over a decade. Their method makes this ancient practice so doggone simple that it works with any size, age, or breed of dog.
The barest bone of it? Get quiet and focus on your spiritual connection with your dog. It's the intention behind this simple act that transforms it into a meditation practice.
Meditation isn't just great for dogs. In humans, meditation relieves stress, helps us live in the moment, and sharpens mental focus. "How to Meditate with Your Dog" shows how to do all this, while deepening the bond, and broadening the love, between you and your dog.
PRAISE FOR "How to Meditate with Your Dog: An Introduction to Meditation for Dog Lovers"
"By being so present to our lives, dogs bring us back to Presence. This little book will charm as it guides us into the mystery of dogs as spiritual companions and teachers." ~ Jean Houston, author of Mystical Dog
"This excellent book belongs in the homes of all those who recognize that dogs are angels and gifts from God." ~Alan Cohen, author of Are You as Happy as Your Dog?
"Meditating with your dog is the spiritual connection to the Human-Animal Bond experience." ~ Bash Dibra, internationally acclaimed animal behaviorist, dog trainer to the stars and author of Star Pet: How to Make Your Pet a Star

Great little book.......2007-10-08
This is a great little book for anyone who wants to have another opportunity to bond with their dog. Even if you don't plan to meditate with your dog, the book will guide you to finding more peace in your life. Highly recommended!

Excellent.......2007-08-07
Although I haven't finished reading the book yet I am very happy with what I have read so far. Unfortunately I am very slow with reading, time is a big issue with me.
How tp meditate with your dog.......2007-05-31
The book was quite basic. I didn't think it was worth the money.
Meditation.......2007-01-10
Sorry. This was one of the silliest books I have ever seen on Meditation. I have two dogs, and I think I could explain meditation with them far better than this book does.
Book Description
Telechron and General Electric pioneered the application of machine age, art deco styling to clock designs, starting with the Paul Frankl designed Modernique. So impressive are many of the designs that over the years they have been incorrectly attributed to such designers as Gilbert Rohde, Russel Wright, and Rockwell Kent. This book sets the record straight, documenting the designers of some 175 models. Readers are introduced to such long forgotten designers as John Rainbault, Ray Patten, and Ivan Bruce whose work is often credited to the big-name designers. Over 700 Telechron and General Electric models produced between 1925 and 1955 are chronicled through over 900 photographs and illustrations, 430 in color. Extensively researched by author Jim Linz, the book even includes production dates and sales figures for many models. A quick reference price guide and index to the models is included as an appendix. Helpful tips for repairing and restoring Telechron and General Electric clocks, including an astonishing method for breathing new life into dead rotors, rounds out the presentation.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of colored photographs.......2007-10-04
This book is wonderful. It has a lot of colored photographs and is a great reference book. It is worth the money.
Good Model Reference.......2007-07-08
The book contains a lot of good history on the company, the founder, and the advertising/promotion meterials. The section on the "designers" gets a little boring. The section on repairing/restoring is interesting and has some good information. There is not a lot of depth to it but for most people, it is more than you'll need. I like the model look up list in the back. The price guide will soon go out of date though, and some of the color photos of the various clocks are horribly green. Overall it's a good book and well worth buying if you are a Telechron enthusiast.
Interesting and well researched.......2006-12-24
This is a well done book with tons of photos and lots of literature and obscure facts on Warren Telechron. The only thing I found a little dissapointing was the clocks themselves. A few are fabulous, scarce and expensive but the majority are rather conservative and dull. Still, an excellent piece of research.
Electrifying Book.......2001-06-06
This book was recommended to me by a friend who said he thought I might find it interesting. My mother used to work for Telechron and G.E. making clocks. Now, after reading this book I have a better idea what she did all day while I was at school! If you know anyone who worked for Telechron, this book would be a great gift. I even got the courage to look at a couple of broken clocks I had lying around with the help of the repair section. I think I'm going to get one of these working again!
Telechron Clocks- Style and Function in the 20th Century.......2001-05-23
What an incredible book! Mr. Linz presents the History of the Warren-Telechron Company in an interesting, yet not burdensome fashion. Using photographs of the literally hundreds of models made until the company's demise, the author takes you from the heavy Cathedral-Style through the Deco era and into "space-age" design of the 50's and early 60's.
I'll wage a bet that if you don't have a Telechron, someone in your family probably does. This book will make a fan out of anyone who is remotely interested in design. There's literally a Telechron for anyone's decor!

Good ways to pass the time.......2007-10-01
My granddaughter is with me during part of the summer. When the books arrived, she was almost six.
We found some interesting things to do. I monitor her tv and computer viewing. So when she got bored and it was not tv time, she would say: get the book! And we always found some fun things to do.
By this book!!!.......2005-12-02
This book is great for days when your board. You need almost nothing to to all the activities. We use it much more than our other craft books! You must by it!
TV free.......2003-03-08
I tripped across this book at my local library and I am here looking for my own copy, as we are limited on how long we keep it. I brutally removed the kids from their TV addiction, and the transition has been difficult on the older ones especially. This book has been my salvation. The prereader like to pick out things by picture, my beginner read has no problem understanding the direction and my toddler and teen get involved too. We have used this to fill the huge void of television and to stave of the "mom I am bored..." routine. This is a small book it fits in my purse and we take it with us everywhere. Breaking the index down by activity type means I can have a Doctor's waiting room idea or a park idea up in running in 2 minutes. The materials list is in the margin for easy access and all the material are everyday every house items, half of which are in my purse any way... This book is a keeper!
Great addition to a family's library.......2002-03-27
This book was recommended in the book Living the Simple Life. I'm so glad I took the time to get it. It's a wonderful resource for busy families looking to spend some quality time together. So turn that TV off and buy this book. Encourages you and your child's imagination and they learn through playing with simple things around the house and the bonus is that by not watching that TV, you've spent memorable time with each other...what could be better?
Lots of activities for your children to choose from.......2002-01-13
For each activity, the authors explain how to do the activity, materials required and materials that are optional to use
365 activities to choose from which are grouped into 16 categories
Safety reminders are included to ensure safe play environments and to monitor potentially tricky materials
The authors explains the importance of quality tiem and quailty play
Few of the many activites includes:
Alphabet Hands
Atlas Adventure
Crayon Rubbings
Easy House of Cards
Family Calender

This visual portfolio presents traditional, modern, and site-specific fireplaces. They range from simple to ornate, and decorative to practical, with beautifully carved wood mantles, rustic timbered chimneypieces, whitewashed brick surrounds, whimsical adobes, vintage adornments, and state-of-the-art metal facades. The design section includes suggestions for furniture placement, lighting, and firewood storage, while the decorating section addresses furnishings on or around the mantelpiece. Each image offers an ingenious solution to fireplace design for any decor.
Customer Reviews:
Great Inspiration.......2005-07-13
Exactly what I was looking for... a "visual portfolio" to help me decide what I wanted in a fireplace for the setting I have. Lots of photographs depicting every style from rustic to contemporary or traditional, and all in tastefully decorated spaces that are just as inspiring. This book provided me with more than enough visual information to put together a plan of my own, and I know I will refer back to it for further decorating ideas.
Not that helpful.......2000-08-23
A pretty book but not that useful. Just found a brand-new Better Homes and Gardens book on fireplaces, which I like much better. The BH&G book has handsome photos but lots of tips on making over a dated fireplace (which we have to do), as well as choosing and positioning a new fireplace (which we also plan to do in our master suite). The Better Homes and Gardens Fireplace book shows a wider range of room and furnishings styles than this House Beautiful book, in my opinion.
House Beautiful Fireplaces.......2000-08-21
British West Indies review sounded like they were inhaling some fireplace smoke.
beautiful dream.......2000-06-21
this books bring new idieas for people who love fire place in ther live my family enyoy the one that we have in our wekend home yon can buy it whit closing your eyes, the book make you dream

Kingsgate: The Art of Keith Parkinson.......2007-03-12
I bought this as a gift and my wife was very pleased. She is a player of Everquest and loves Keith's art!
ONE OF THE TRUE GREATS!.......2005-12-09
Along with Clyde Caldwell, Larry Elmore, and Jeff Easley, Keith Parkingson completes the "Fab Four" of fantasy artists. To think that all four were on staff at TSR at one time is mind boggling. One can only imagine the creative competition that took place between these four supremely talented artists. Kingsgate from SQP features 128 pages of Parkinson's paintings in full, lush color and printed on heavy stock paper. Bestselling fantasy writer Terry Goodkind provides an introduction to the book. Goodkind is an unabashed fan of Parkinson's who has done the covers to several of his books. Goodkind provides commentary on each cover and offers his unique insight on how the covers were devised. I think my favorite cover that Keith did for the Sword of Truth series was for Naked Empire showing the statue of a powerful warrior, long forgotten in the remote wilderness.
Parksinon's book covers are often enough to sell a book and he's done numerous book, RPG, and computer game covers over the years including one of Polgara, the David Edding's sorceress with her dark hair and trademark white steak, holding an owl in the forest. His fantasy calendars are always in a league of their own. There's a certain magic and myth to his work that's often missing in many artist's work. They seem to tell a story all on their own. Parkinson relates how Blizzard wanted him to do the cover for Diablo II but he was already tied up with other projects. So enamored of his work were they that they basically told him to give them anything as soon as he could and Keith would deliver a stunning painting that would be uses in promotional posters for the game.
Dungeons & Dragons fans will be sure to recognize many paintings from some of their favorite game accessories over the years including his group of skeletal kings in "Gods of Lanhkmar" and the "Temple of Elemental Evil" One of my favorites was always one of the Ravenloft Death Knight, Lord Soth. It's simply a gorgeous book that comes with an index to the paintings. A fitting collection by one of the genre's best artists.

WOW!.......2005-11-01
With this second collection of Keith's paintings, we finally have a book worthy of the art it contains. This all new material is a wonderful collection of paintings and renderings of fearsome dragons, hideous creatures, captivating women, and sword-wielding men of valor. Also included are cover paintings for bestselling books by Terry Goodkind and David Eddings, as well as computer game art for EverQuest and Diablo, never-before-seen sketches, colorful commentary by the artist, and a whole lot more. One of the "Fab Four" from the TSR glory years, his work never fails to kindle the imagination and whisk one away to the worlds he creates.
"Magnificent modern fantasy at its finest--sensual, richly colored, imaginative, powerful. He's on our 'A' list of contemporary fantasy painters; his previous book was a bestseller for us." - from the Bud Plant catalog
With the sad news of Keith's recent passing, this will likely be the last collection of new material, but what we have here, we can treasure forever. Rest In Peace Keith, and thank you for sharing your wonderful gift with us.
Book Description
The first edition of Tally's Corner, a sociological classic, was the first compelling response to the culture of poverty thesis--that the poor are different and, according to conservatives, morally inferior--and alternative explanations that many African Americans are caught in a tangle of pathology owing to the absence of black men in families. Elliot Liebow's new introduction to this long-awaited revised edition bring the book up to date. Visit our website for sample chapters!

Great Example of qualitative research .......2007-06-25
This work, aside from all useful insight into inner city culture, is able to offer the perspective qualitative research a good example of how to construct observation and insider knowledge into one. When writing-up qualitative research it is often hard to determine what balance between observation and insider language must be presented to convince the reader. This book, by its example, provides a very successful model that can be used by almost anyone. Simply stated, you must get this book in order to improve your qualitative research. Good luck!!!
RELEVANT THEN...RELEVANT NOW..........2001-08-28
This study of Black streetcorner men by noted anthropologist, Dr. Elliot Liebow, was his doctoral dissertation. It became recognized as one of the more important sociological treatises, at the time it was written; a time during which Blacks or African Americans were still referred to as Negroes. Dr. Liebow's year and a half long study of a group of disaffected Black males, who routinely frequented a streetcorner in Washington, D.C.'s inner city, provided the basis for the dissertation that gave rise to this book. His analysis of this particular societal subculture, in the context of the overall social milieu in which it exists, is still relevant today. While scholarly, the book is written in an engaging conversational tone, which makes for easy reading. This book should be read by all those with an interest in the social sciences.
Tallly's Corner: A Study of Negro Streetcorner Men.......2000-11-08
Admittedly, I first read Tally's Corner almost three decades ago -- and it still has a hold over me. In those 30 years, I went from studying sociology to making films to doing start-ups in Silicon Valley. I am now in the process of ordering more copies to distribute to friends. Tally's Corner is an exceptional work. It had its origins in a doctoral thesis and yet it reads like a novel. Its powerful message aside, Tally's Corner is marvelous reading. Anyone who wants to write something important and lasting should look to Liebow to see how it is done. Tally's Corner defies the contrary logic which says "no pain, no gain" -- that all things profound must to be impossible for everyman to understand.
Provides an excellent sociological perspective!.......1998-02-09
This book was assigned as part of a course taken on Oppression and Poverty in America. An excellent book for anyone interested in learning about life in the inner-city. Written in 1967 as a field study by the late Elliot Liebow, it offers a view of life that is not seen by most college students. I have assigned it to my Intro to Sociology class as a stepping off point for discussion about American culture, poverty, and family life. Very easy reading and truly a book that should be read by anyone who wants to begin to understand and accept diversity among people.
