Book Description
Why do birds often live in pairs and rear chicks together, whereas female mammals usually live in groups and rear their young without male help? Why do males sometimes live with a single mate when they are capable of fertilizing more than one female's eggs? Is male helping behavior important for monogamous partnerships? This book provides answers concerning the biological roots of social monogamy in animal groups as diverse as ungulates, carnivores, rodents, birds and primates (including humans) for students and researchers in behavioral ecology, evolutionary anthropology and zoology.

Another old book that is better than new ones.......2007-01-04
Everyone who wants to breed their poultry and wants some idea of what they will produce should buy this book. It is readable, not dry, and also a nice size for carrying around.
Book Description
Birds show bewildering diversity in their life histories, mating systems and risk of extinction. Why do albatrosses delay reproduction for the first 12 years of their life while zebra finches breed in their first year ? Why are fairy-wrens so sexually promiscuous while swans show lifelong monogamy? Why are over a quarter of parrot species threatened with global extinction while woodpeckers and cuckoos remain secure? Some of these topics, such as delayed onset of breeding in seabirds, are classic problems in evolutionary ecology, while others have arisen in the last decade, such as genetic mating systems and extinction. Birds offer a unique opportunity for investigating these questions because they are exceptionally well-studied in the wild. By employing phylogenetic comparative methods and a database of up to 3,000 species, the authors identify the ecological and evolutionary basis of many of these intriguing questions. They also highlight remaining puzzles and identify a series of challenges for future investigation. This is the most comprehensive reappraisal of avian diversity since David Lack's classic "Ecological Adaptations for Breeding in Birds". It is also the most extensive application of modern comparative methods yet undertaken. This novel approach demonstrates how an evolutionary perspective can reveal the general ecological processes that underpin contemporary avian diversity on a global scale.
Book Description
Loons dance duets atop the water; warblers sing sweet songs to woo the opposite sex; the ruffed grouse beats a startling rhythm; and all manner of males display their true colors, from the brilliant red of the cardinal to the iridescent blue of the peacock’s tail. A natural history of the secret love life of birds, this book lets us in on the most charming--and sometimes downright peculiar--behavior in the avian repertory. The author, a veteran watcher and photographer of birds, chronicles the amours of thirty species, including loons, peacocks, hummingbirds, ostriches, mallards, doves, swans, and ravens. Léveillé writes each essay in a personal manner, speculating and observing from the birder's blind and describing his travels in pursuit of these birds and their stories. A congenial guide, he offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the mating behavior of some of the world’s most lovely and beloved creatures. Finally, a new type of book for all of your bird-loving customers.

Book Description
The story of a young South African black man obsessed with an English girl whom he encounters on the segregated Durban beachfront is told from the narrator's prison cell in this classic African novel. Although no words are exchanged, a connection develops between the two mismatched lovers, leading to an intense and ambiguous sexual encounter. He is charged with rape and receives the death sentence. Reconstructing his own history, his obsession with the girl, and his court proceedings, the narrator offers a powerful examination of the warped racial morality and brutality of apartheid.

Book Description
The final battle for the world of Neyve has begun. Druid magic has summoned warriors of all times and nations from Earth to Neyve where they will fight side by side with elves, dwarves, dragons, and centaurs against the armies of the dead commanded by Karlath-Fayd, the Deathlord...
Customer Reviews:
a better ending than before.......2006-01-20
The last book of the seven circles trilogy is better than the first 2 books. As far as I know, there is no sexuality in this one. Also, there is an interesting twist to the ending. Zystil gets killed finally, and regillix returns to arcati to bring dragon allies to nayve. Shandira and Miradel take a visit to karlath-fayd only to be pestered by a giant gargoyle. The only thing that was bad about the book: There was numerous mispellings and typos. Also as usual, events came to fast and always weren't explained. Still, a very good book to end the series.
strong fantasy.......2003-03-08
The cosmos consists of seven circles with the seventh being Earth and the fourth being the pastoral land of Nayve where sentient species live in harmony. The Goddess Worldweaver spins a tapestry that records all events that happen on all the circles. Druids, humans, fairies, elves, centaurs, dwarves and other fey creatures work together to make Nayve a center of culture and learning. Their peace is about to be broken because Karlath Fayd, the Deathlord who resides in the fifth circle intends to conquer Nayve.
He has sent his legions of ships containing ghost warriors into the realm and the sheer number of them almost guarantees his horde a victory. General Natac leads his armies in defense of the land while the druid priestess Miradel goes to the Deathlord's realm to see if she can find a weakness to use against him in the upcoming war.
Douglas Niles has the ability to construct a fantasy realm that makes readers believe that such a place can actually exist. Unlike the previous two books in this series, THE GODDESS WORLDWEAVER consists mainly of battle scenes interspersed with a glimpse into the fifth circle. Miradel's role is small but pivotal to the story line and readers will feel very satisfied at the way Douglas Niles weaves the end to this series.

A Peculiar Penchant.......2005-03-30
Kasey Michaels regency romances are always good, and always have a lot of humor. If you enjoy reading and laughing, you can't go wrong with her!
Since I find it really hard to write an actual review, I'll pull this from the back cover!
Pretty Lady Penelope Rayburn could have had her pick of society's bachelors, but her keen wit and fiery spirit said "nay." To her father's dismay, Penny did not give a fig for the London Season: she preferred mischief to marriage! Distraught, the Marquess made his daughter a wager: Penelope was to winter in rustic Derbyshire with her dowager cousin Lucinda. If she lasted the entire time without incurring an "incident," the Marquess would never again refer to his daughter's refusal to find a proper husband. Penny eagerly accepted the challenge. But then she met a dashing gent named Lucien Kenrick, who was just as playful as she! Lady Penelope had met her match in the person of a devilish bounder. Yet she never heard the cries of scandal...only the beating of her heart!
Book Description
The authentic vintage cocktail has made a comeback. This book does not repeat the timeworn cocktails of old. While old-fashioneds, martinis, rusty nails, margaritas, and negronis are all great drinksand this book includes the most authentic recipesyou can find them anywhere.
Here, historian, expert, and drink aficionado Dr. Cocktail has hand-picked 80 drinks rarely made today, and all of them deserve revival. Some are from the nineteenth century, some from the Prohibition era, and some from just after World War II, as the golden age of the cocktail was waning. All are retrieved from extremely uncommon sources. In fact, some of these drinks were found carefully penned into old cocktail manuals or on scraps of paper and may never have been published. They are true treasures, indeed.
Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails pays homage to the great bartenders of the past and the beverages they created, lost in time, but still grand and full of potential. If you have half the fun looking at this book and trying these recipes as the author did putting them together, a great party is sure to ensue.

A wonderful book, well researched and written.Nicely laid out with attractive photos and graphics.Great recipes and scholarly research. What more could one ask for ? (except maybe for him to come over to your house and fix you one of the drinks in the book ;-)
brilliant.......2006-03-24
this book represents a brilliant volume of classic drinks from yesteryear. Although some ingredients are dauntingly unavailable, most can be subsituted still making a fabulous cocktail. The cocktail revolution in back, baby, and this collection can help any barkeep excel to the top of their game. Get it, this is hott!!
A Good Resource.......2006-03-16
The most valuable part of this book for me was the information on where to obtain products [on line] to re-create these vintage cocktails. The book could have more recipes and less pictures of "old cocktail" shakers and bottles.
Still it is worth obtaining.
Forgotten cocktails are back........2005-07-20
This book features very usefull info about forgotten cocktails. Old classics are the base of all others.... You will learn from this book how cocktails used to be. Every bartender should know cocktails background to understand them better.
Must buy for all industry people.
Very interesting book to explore!!!

Barrons Books Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ for any bird owner!!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an amazing book! There are so many tips and suggestions for correcting or preventing bad behaviors in birds. The ideal time to read this would be before even bringing the parrot home, but it is a must read for all bird owners. The parrot world is evolving and new things are being learned all the time.....read it to learn!!!!
Great Learning Tool.......2007-04-10
I am new to parrots and this book literally takes you by the hand and addresses whatever issue you are having. I highly recommend it.
A very good beginner book!.......2007-03-26
My hubbie decided to petsit his uncle's macaw but we had no idea why she acted the way she did. She would screech loudly, try to bite us, & if we tried to get her down from our shoulder she would run to our back. We needed information. This book didn't disappoint! Chapter 2 was a treasure trove of information. It had games you could play with your parrot, also how to get your parrot to stop biting. The wobble correction method is what we have been using. Chapter 3 was about developing behavior patterns. This chapter was great in helping us realize height does matter. We were letting Baby D(parrot's name) get on our shoulder and also letting her roam on the top of her cage. She was getting very aggresive and we couldn't understand why.Letting her spend time in places that were high was making her think she was the boss. Chapter 5 Common behavior problems talks about dealing with screaming, chewing, and boredom in birds. It also talks more about the height factor. Chapter 7 talks about reading parrot body language and the pitfalls of leaving your parrot home alone all day.
I learned alot by this book. Parrots are alot of responsibility but they are also lovable. I know they have times when they screech and scream but if you follow this book you should you should have a better behaved parrot most of the time. I see some impovement already in baby D. This book has loads of information that should help you understand all about your new parrot.
EXCELENT.......2007-02-06
One of the best books with a thorough guidance how to treat your parrot and skills for a well behaved bird.
Help with problem parrots........2007-01-12
This book is filled with great ideas for how to deal with every crazy parrot behavioural problem you might encounter, as well as practical strategies to keep them from developing in the first place!

A good pictorial for the collector.......1998-04-13
Ms Martini, an avid and well known collector has tried to give us a book which is usable and friendly in the amount of color photos - however, there is a paucity of written information and this puts the reader at a loss for learning, further education and good comparisons of writing instruments. This is not a true learning tool but a good shopping guide. The publisher has turned out better books in varied areas so should try to provide a more thorough text in the future - Ms Martini has the skills, knowledge and collection she needs assistance in translation and more word space.

Great for Pelikan, Parker collectors.......1999-03-20
Worth the price of admission if only for the superb table of vintage Pelikan pens, and a fine section on Parker. Regina Martini is an excellent dealer, especially in German pens; her most recent offerings can be found on e-Bay.
Good reference, '98 update prices comes in handy........1998-08-07
I own several fountain pen books and refer to this particular book more than the others. Though it does not have enough information on some big makers like Shaeffer, it does have good info on others such as Parker and Mont Blanc. There are better books but there are alot more useless reference books. If you had to buy a book to begin your pen collecting hobby, get this one. It is a pretty good reference with a good brief history on some pen makers.

Introduced to the familiar.......2003-12-23
I thought that because I am a novice, I would be overwhelmed with new information, but alas that was not the case. I eagerly devoured the book when it arrived and was sorely dissapointed when I got to the last page. The book is written well and the photographs are lovely.
My only real beef with it was the amount of pages used to explain about different houses. I would rather have seen more rooms and furniture.
I thought the "The Art of the Miniature" by Jane Freeman was a better book, as it showed and explained more ideas for rooms, which I was more interested.
Book Description
The basis of Jane Cumberbatch's approach to interior design and decoration is a pared-down uncluttered look, a relaxed mood, and the timeless appeal of natural materials. In "Pure Style Outdoors", she takes her accessible style outside the home to help you make the most of your garden space, whether it is a modest city balcony, roof terrace, or rambling country garden. The book features inspirational suggestions for all the elements that make up the garden - including colour and lighting, boundaries, surfaces, and containers - complemented by the author's favourite selection of flowers, herbs, fruit, vegetables, and other plants.

Book Description
Donald Goines was a pimp, a truck driver, a heroin addict, a factory worker, and a career criminal. He was also one of world's most popular Black contemporary writers. Having published 16 novels, including Whoreson, Dopefiend, and Daddy Cool, Goines's unique brand of "street narrative" and "ghetto realism" mark him as the original street writer. Now, in the first in-depth biography of Goines's life, author Eddie B. Allen explores exactly how one man could make the transition from street hustler to bestselling author. With exclusive access to personal letters, treatments from unwritten books, photographs, and family members, Allen uncovers Goines's personal experiences with drugs, prostitutes, prison, and urban violence. Fans of Goines's novels will note a dramatic parallelism between his life and his fictional tales.
Customer Reviews:
Only for hardcore Goines fans........2005-09-08
This is a biography of Donald Goines, who wrote a lot of sleazy ghetto fiction books. The only book of his that I have read is Dopefiend, which is good, but is also one of the most depressing books I have ever read. But anyway about Low Road, its not that its bad but this is very incomplete. I really didn't feel like I knew that much about Goines except he was a junkie, he was a convict, he was a criminal, he was murdered. There is a lot of filler in this book too where the author goes into general history of the times that Goines lived. I'd only recomend this to people who are really into Goines. If you only have a casual interest in Goines this book really isn't worth your time.
You Can't Run from the Past.......2004-12-23
Daddy Cool, Black Girl Lost, Dopefiend -- these and the numerous other works published by Donald Goines brought the streets to the pages of a book. Goines was most qualified to write about the themes he covered in his books because much of what he wrote about, he lived. LOW ROAD covers most of his short life, beginning with his childhood, highlighting his family life as well as his less than stellar academic career. Next his decision to join the military and his military life is discussed. Goines' military experiences are a critical turning point in his life because it is while enlisted that Goines develops the drug addiction that would haunt him for the rest of his life. After leaving the military, he returns home with no job prospects and an addiction to support; it is then that he really commits to hustling and quickly gets caught up in life on the streets.
As a result of his criminal activity, he eventually finds himself incarcerated, during which time he is exposed to the works of Iceberg Slim and is inspired to write. Upon his release, Goines was able to secure a series of book deals and was able to achieve a certain degree of success as a writer. In spite of this, his personal demons continued to have a strong hold and his personal life remained one of frustration, poverty and addiction. The murders of Goines and his girlfriend remain unsolved to this day, and while there are many theories as to what killed him, most believe the murder was simply his past catching up with him.
The author obviously spent a great deal of time and research and the result is a well balanced look at Goines. Readers will better understand the factors which ultimately led to his self-destructive lifestyle while seeing first hand how success is not always enough to overcome a drug addiction. Goines' murder resulted in the loss of a talented writer who had the unique ability to bring the grit and realism of the streets to life in an engaging and gripping story. The fact that his murder remains unsolved and that Goines died virtually penniless and still addicted to heroin adds to the bitter irony of his life.
There were times when I felt the book had a bit too much fluff, with the author spending too much time discussing the times rather than Goines himself, I still felt the book was informative and an enjoyable read. If you are a fan of the writings of Donald Goines or have ever wondered about the man behind the books, then LOW ROAD is a necessary and worthy addition to your reading library. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

Tortured Genius.......2004-10-07
Tortured Genius. To me, that's what this cat was. Eddie Allen Jr's book revealed more about the man and the events of his time as well as any other biography about another public figure. Surprisingly, or maybe not to some, Goines grew up in a stable household in which his father owned and operated his own business with the help of his supportive wife. There is no mention of drug use by his parents or other siblings while he grew up. It makes his story even more complicated, and makes people wonder as to why he chose the route he took. Allen takes us back to the turbulent times of the early 20th century and the events that took place, not only in the city of Detroit, but the country as a whole. He drew some interesting parallels, including one that links Goines' father and Joe Louis as buddies during Lewis' reign as champion of the world. That one aspect of Allen's work re-affirmed to me it is a small world indeed. Allen continues as he tells readers about Goines becoming a pimp, bootlegger, and later, being arrested and locked behind bars. He also tells plenty about Goines' increasingly dangerous habit of heroin, which he even displays to his younger sister, all the while, warning her if he ever caught her doing what he was showing her, he would kill her. It was a frightening and hypocritical display, but nonetheless, it most likely proved effective. Allen goes on to tell about Goines picking up the works of Iceberg Slim, and forming his own stories using Slim's as a blueprint, so to speak. Throughout the book, Allen provides plenty of documentation and other sources to prove this is indeed a work of authenticity, including a piece Goines wrote one year before his death entitled, "Private Thoughts on a Lonely Sunday, September 1, 1973." Allen also lets us know about Goines' inner struggle with his addiction, and how desperately he wanted to "kick" the habit out of his life. In the end, his struggles and other wrongdoings in the past came back to haunt him. Allen did a terrific job in not turning this into a sob story. Donald Goines was no saint, but he is admired by many, such as myself, for telling his own stories, his own life, using his imagination, and telling stories from the heart in the most vivid, brutal, harsh, but also heart-felt fashion.
