Book Description

A science thriller set in motion when cutting-edge genetic technology collides with a good old-fashioned natural disaster. Through a collusion of coincidence, shared technology, and a string of military crises triggered by one government's attempt to hang on to power at any cost, three nations will spiral toward an unforgettable climax. As the story opens, an ecological catastrophe has changed the face of Northern China. The world's most populous nation is teetering on the brink of collapse. With its fate seemingly upon it, Beijing contemplates the U.S. with stony apprehension--and hatches a startling plan of action to guarantee its own survival...

In San Diego, Richard Kirby, a brilliant young biochemist at Immunological Technologies, prepares to announce a breakthrough in genomic medicine. But when Kirby travels to Geneva to make public the news, he inadvertently sets in motion a chain of events which threaten to derail China's carefully scripted plans. Soon after, his wife mysteriously disappears. Now, to get her back, he will be forced to embark on a journey fraught with peril at every turn. His own government will turn against him, and just to survive he will have to draw upon everything he has learned, walking a tightrope between powerful competing forces--at first dodging, then actively participating in a conflict that will ultimately expose one nation, humble a second, and liberate a third.

1 out of 5 stars A real yawner .......2005-06-30

I'll cut to the chase: This book is staggeringly dull. A lack of any real character development, action, or intersting ideas leaves the reading wondering not only why it was written but, more importantly, why anyone would read more than 10 pages of it. Could have used a good editor but then what would have been left? Not much.

4 out of 5 stars Absorbing and Ingenious!.......2001-04-09

First time author Leonard Crane may find it difficult to surpass Ninth Day of Creation, a gripping tale of international politics, science and engaging underdog protagonists.

As a fan of hard science fiction, I deeply appreciated Mr. Crane's solid and plausible presentation of the science-based elements of the story. Crane does an excellent job of presenting complex genetic and other material in a clear manner. He successfully finds that critical balance between too much and too little information and never lets the science overshadow the story. The novel is frighteningly believable. Crane also avoids one of the chief pitfalls of hard SF: weak characters. His characters are both real and interesting, and their personal struggles keep everything on a human level. I also commend him on writing strong, intelligent female characters.

While very much a science-in-fiction novel, Ninth Day of Creation is also a political thriller, perhaps even more so, and, as someone interested in politics and international relations, I greatly enjoyed the story on this level as well. I strongly recommend Ninth Day of Creation to fans of authors such as Tom Clancy and the Reeves-Stevens duo. There is enough action in the air, at sea and on the road to satisfy anyone!

The book's strengths are myriad. Intelligent, fast-paced, with a complex, tightly woven plot, featuring more twists, turns and surprises than one expects; strongly developed characters; international suspense; realistic, informative science... While I personally found the book to be a bit of a slow start, once the chain of events was unleashed, the action didn't stop.

5 out of 5 stars MICHAEL CRICHTON, MOVE OVER!.......2001-01-05

Do you enjoy science fiction novels with lots of action, believable, interesting characters, and solid science? This is the book for you!

Leonard Crane gets bonus points for featuring some really smart, strong female characters, and also for not resorting to one of the most common mistakes of science fiction novels, which is having all of the characters jumping into bed with each other. (You could read this book to your grandmother and not be embarrassed.)

I won't rehash the plot. I'll just tell you that this book ranks right up there with Jurassic Park and Andromeda Strain.

If you'd like to know more about it, come on over to Amazon's Science Fiction and Fantasy Discussion Board for a visit. There are plenty of friendly folks there who will be more than happy to discuss books with you, including this one!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!.......2000-12-31

What a book! Even though it numbers over 600 pages, I finished it in a mere three days, it was that gripping. "The Ninth Day of Creation" is both science fiction and a political thriller, written masterfully so that the suspense builds and builds and never lets up.

A brilliant, young, unassuming scientist has developed a potential cure for AIDS. Mexico's feisty female president is causing major headaches for the US presidency. The Chinese government is attempting to cover up the drastic measures that it has undertaken to prevent the country's collapse. These three seemingly unrelated plots turn out to be intertwined so fully that the events that unfold have shattering implications for everyone concerned. Leonard Crane weaves his plot so well that it's difficult to believe that this is his first novel.

For me, the most important aspect that determines whether or not I like a book is if I care about the characters. All of the main players in this book (and most of the minor characters as well) are very real and mostly likeable, despite their very human flaws. Even the villains are portrayed as real people with real reasons behind their despicable actions, twisted as those reasons may be.

I normally do not particularly enjoy this type of political thriller. It says something for Crane's ability to write a story that I picked up his book and didn't put it down until I had finished it three days later. The action never stops, the science is fascinating and well-researched, the characters are delightful, and the ending is satisfying. Who could ask for more?

4 out of 5 stars A good thriller.......2000-12-13

In San Diego, biochemist Dr. Richard Kirby of Immunological Technologies has found a way of introducing a third strand into the DNA double helix model of Watson and Crick. Richard, accompanied by his employer Dan Rosen, will introduce his findings to the General Assembly of the World Health organization in Geneva. Richard's solution to the long-stalled field of gene therapy is amazing, having realized a dream held by geneticists since Watson and Crick first elucidated the structure of genes in 1953.

However, Richard's trip to Switzerland only acts to catalyze a worsening series of global events and bring him to the attention of some already desperate world leaders. From China (whose leaders are dealing underhandedly with an ecological disaster) to the President of the United States (who is about to discover that he has unwittingly supported a top secret biological warfare program) to other places on the globe, all the players quickly seize on Kirby as a key element to the unravelling of their problems.

NINTH DAY OF CREATION successfully blends science and politics into a taut thriller that warns about the potentially dark side of genetics. Does the tale require a stretch in terms of Kirby's actions? Absolutely. But no one will care because the plot is that exciting. Leonard Crane makes a scientifically plausible argument that our current dabbling in the gene code could prove to be the biological equivalent to the 1940s nuclear energy experiments with misuse leading to genocide and racial cleansing. Instead of preaching, Mr. Crane succeeds with invoking his message by packing it inside a fast-paced, non-stop action scientific thriller. The premise will send shock waves through sub-genre fans because the well-written story line appears so feasible.

Here, all the questions are answered -- the real reasons for Tithian's destructive actions, the existence of the shadow people, the truth of the dwarven prophecies, even how Athas became the way it is. The characters that have been given a chance to develop over the course of the series are as strong as ever, and the newer characters (particularly Neeva's son Rkard) are nearly as memorable

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious and irreverent.......2000-05-16

It's surprising that the Marshal Law books are out of print. These stories are some of the best superhero parodies ever written. Mills' hilarious writing and strong knowledge of comics history is almost overshadowed by O'Neill's frantic and hyper-violent art.

Marshal Law... the hero hunter... who hunts heroes. This book collects various tales of the Marshal wiping out parodies of Batman and the JSA, an attack of "Night of the Living Dead"-style zombies, and a great combination of the HUAC hearings & "Seduction of the Innocent".

Hopefully, Dark Horse will get back in the swing of things and realize that comic fans shouldn't be without these stories.

5 out of 5 stars Pyscho-analyse super heroes, then kill them........1999-06-18

Marshal Law lives in a world where 1000's of men became super-powered in a futuristic equivalent of the Vietnam war. They were made to commit attrocities and this combined with the indifference, even fear of their government has left them homeless and bitter. This is scathingly funny, though it will be more to your taste if you have an anti-authoritarian streak, barely disguised versions of famous heroes are parodied to expose their dark underbellies. Marshal Law himself is hilariously obssessed with his hatred for the heroes. A familiarity with the heroes parodied is helpful to an appreciation of this wickedly brilliant story.

5 out of 5 stars The best Marshall Law to date...irreverent but funny........1998-11-14

Marshall Law,he's a hero hunter - he ain't found one yet!

Living in a world turned on it's head, heroes manufactured for war, then tossed on the human scrap heap in peace time(if they weren't turned into mutilated failures in the process). Crime is rife in a society mutilated by war, Marshall Law, one of those heroes who did meet the grade, is scarred by the war like everyone else but his solution is to fight the hypocrisy towering above him - his targets;heroes. The plot is fairly straight forward, with those twists you would expect from Mills, illuminated by an insanely sexually charged environment where superheroes and villians vent their urges; usually for a price.

I won't tell you the plot, read this book then read it again for the varied sub-texts and character sketches. Who is Mills targeting with all this, the list could be endless.

        5 out of 5 stars A fine follow-up to Fear and Loathing.......1998-11-11

Once again, Pat Mills puts the Marshal through the paces. This time, Law is beating back the undead with a new deputy. The same edginess that made the first Marshal Law book a classic is present in this one as well. Meeting Law's family is a treat in itself. Highly recommended.

One of the most coveted reservations to have in New York City is at Babbo, Mario Batali's flagship restaurant in Greenwich Village. In The Babbo Cookbook, Batali (author of Mario Batali Simple Italian Food and Mario Batali Holiday Food) takes readers behind the scenes of his popular restaurant--from the kitchen to the front of house--sharing 150 recipes for his innovative Italian fare and offering tips on menu selection, service, and presentation. Along the way, Batali expertly captures the intimate buzz, the warm hospitality, and the generous attention to detail that makes Babbo a singular dining experience.

Before digging into any of the dozen-plus featured antipasti, Batali offers several specialty aperitivi, including the refreshing Blood Orange Bellini. Two of Babbo's signature dishes, Mint Love Letters with Spicy Lamb Sausage (little ravioli stuffed with a filling of sweet peas, mint, heavy cream, and Parmigiano-Reggiano) and Beef Cheek Ravioli (so good the book recommends doubling the filling and freezing a batch), are broken down and made more than accessible to the home cook. Other exceptional pasta options include Pumpkin Lune with Butter and Sage (finished with a dusting of Parmigiano-Reggiano and amaretti cookie crumbs) and Gnocchi with Oxtail Ragù (a reinterpretation of a Batali family classic, still served at Salumi, his father's must-visit Seattle shop). Chapters "Mare (From the Sea)" and "Terra e Bosco (From the Earth and Forest)" offer Crispy Black Bass with Endive Marmellata and Saffron Vinaigrette ("'crispy' sells more food than a barrage of adjectives," Batali reveals) and a succulent Osso Buco with Toasted Pine Nut Gremolata. There's a wonderful section on pre-desserts and cheese, and in "Dolci" pastry chef Gina DePalma wraps things up with Maple and Mascarpone Cheesecake, Meyer Lemon Semifreddo, and a tempting cookie plate.

The Babbo Cookbook is a gorgeous affair--nearly every recipe is accompanied by a color photo of the finished dish. Batali is an intelligent and inspiring guide throughout the book, and Babbo co-owner Joseph Bastianich (who cowrote the terrific Vino Italiano with Babbo wine director David Lynch) provides detailed notes on their topnotch table and wine service. Some of the recipes may seem daunting to tentative home cooks (the recipe for Warm Testa with Waxy Potatoes opens with "Place the pig's head in a large pot with water"), but Batali recognizes that readers don't have the benefit of being backed by a kitchen staff and offers tips and modifications to turn out a version of the dish as close as possible to the real deal. Whether you choose to cook your way through one recipe at a time or attempt to turn out an entire tasting menu for a special occasion, Batali's Babbo Cookbook is a keeper--a book you'll turn to again and again. --Brad Thomas Parsons

        Book Description

Some of the most inspired (and acclaimed) Italian food in the country is served at Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, Mario Batali’s flagship restaurant in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village. Diners in this converted town house have come to expect innovative flavors and artful presentations that make the most of seasonal, local, and artisanal ingredients—all with a sensibility that is distinctly Italian. Now home cooks can re-create these showstopping dishes, just as they are served at the restaurant, to win raves of their own.

The Babbo Cookbook is Mario’s biggest yet, filled with 150 recipes that have redefined contemporary Italian cooking. Here for the first time he shares such signature dishes as Mint Love Letters with Spicy Lamb Sausage and Beef Cheek Ravioli, all showcasing his unparalleled ability to reinterpret the Italian culinary tradition in a completely original way. Recipes for dozens of Babbo’s renowned antipasti, many based on fresh seasonal produce, are followed by an alluring collection of pastas; fish, fowl, and meat entrées; and a selection of Babbo’s irresistible dessert offerings. From Grilled Pork Chops with Peaches and Balsamic Vinegar to Spicy Lamb Tartare with Mint Crostini and a Quail Egg and Wild Striped Bass with Charred Leeks and Squid Vinaigrette, The Babbo Cookbook is filled with vibrant, complex flavors that belie their straightforward preparations. Even classic recipes like Bollito Misto and Pappardelle Bolognese come alive again in bright new renditions that delight the palate.

Also included are notes on the unique touches that make a meal at Babbo such a singular dining experience, from suggestions on wine service to recipes for “predesserts” that smooth the transition from savory to sweet—all representing the distinctive brand of Italian hospitality that has become the Batali trademark.

The Babbo Cookbook is that rarity in the world of restaurant cookbooks: a collection of accessible, appetizing recipes that brings the spirit of a remarkable restaurant into the home kitchen without losing an iota of tantalizing flavor in the translation.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorites!.......2007-09-22

I love this book! Since it arrived (about a month ago) I have made 3 dishes, which really means I have made about 6. Most of the dishes in this cookbook require several other recipes which are also found in the book. For instance, the classic Osso Buco requires you to make a basic tomato sauce as well as a brown chicken stock. Could you go out and buy a good tomato sauce and chicken stock? Yes, but then your finished product wouldn't be the same.

Another aspect that I love about all Batali books are the stories. There are little introductions to each section and recipe as well as general guide lines to service.

If you have eaten at Babbo or any of Batali's restauraunts and are looking to recreate that experience at home, you should really own this book. It doesn't come with the ambience or the service, but you will get all the recipes! Even the weird ones (to Americans at least) like Warm Testa and Warm Tripe. I encourage you to make those as well as they are truly delicious! Enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised!.......2007-07-07

I ordered this along with Harry Potter: Book Seven and asked that they ship together to save costs. They shipped this separately anyway at no additional charge! I was psyched! Highly recommended! The book's great, too!

Love him or hate him, Molto Mario's more than just a Food Network pretty boy. Unlike a lot of so-called "star chefs", he actually puts his money where his mouth is. In a city full of fabulous restaurants, Babbo's known as a no-compromises joint -- and this cookbook will help you recreate many of the restaurant's signature dishes. Set aside an afternoon for prep (and maybe a morning for shopping, while you're at it), and you'll be cooking up dishes that will make your Nonna weep with happiness.

5 out of 5 stars More food porn than "cookbook".......2006-10-27

I think some of these reviews miss the point that this isn't really a book aimed at the casual home cook; the dishes are restaurant quality, which requires restaurant skill or something approaching it, and the book itself is ideal for poring and drooling over, planning (or just fantasizing about) your trip to Babbo. As for whether the recipes work, all I can say is that my husband has successfully prepared several of them, but he's a chef and has been cooking professionally for 25 years. I've not attempted any of the recipes myself and would frankly rather wait until I can eat at Babbo ... but I've still gotten a lot of enjoyment from this book.

2 out of 5 stars not very good.......2006-09-29

I know Batali has become an American icon for Italian cooking, but this book is poorly written and assembled. It is boring to thumb through with recipies that invite you to close the book and go to another.

I love Italy and both Northern and Southern cuisine, but this just doesn't work for me.

          Book Description

It was love at first sight. Amid the frenzied barking and prancing of a house full of Great Danes, one pup was shivering in the corner. Gracie. But when Dan Dye reached her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know I'm the one. No get me outta here!

By turns funny, moving, tender, and inspiring, Gracie's tale is a treat for every dog lover. There is Gracie's first morning, racing around Dan in the snowy yard. Gracie's first determination to prove to her step-sisters, Dottie the Dalmation and Sarah the Black Lab, that she's one of the girls. Gracie's defiant romance with a pint-size charmer named Byron, a Boston Terrier from the wrong side of the fence.

Then born of necessity, the eureka moment: When Gracie's delicate constitution starts turning into anorexia, Dan teaches himself how to cook, and in three days is baking her the cookies that will spur her appetite, launch Three Dog Bakery, and transform their lives forever.

Courage. Compassion. Kindness. Soul. Tenacity. And joy, above all, joy. These qualities Gracie possessed in abundance, and shared with everyone, human or canine, who had the good fortune to cross her path.

4 out of 5 stars give this poor dog a bone.......2007-09-02

This is a fun, sweet, and eventually poignant story, and an interesting account of the startup of the three dog bakery. I loved to hear about Gracie, and she sure makes the idea of a Dane tempting (I've got GSDs myself). What I couldn't figure out though, was why the emphasis on feeding this poor dog whole wheat flour, fruits and veggies. The author talks about poor Gracie potentially starving to death, while he searches for the perfect "nonmeat, nonchocolate, nonsalt, nonsugar ingredient" and discusses carrots, spinach, bananas, apples, pears, etc. And I'm thinking -- why nonmeat? I mean, dogs are carnivores, after all. Why not give up on the pears and hand this starving dog vanishing into thin air half a raw chicken and see what she does with it and how she makes out?

Perhaps because my dogs are raw fed that I am so puzzled by the non meat reference. They do eat a few Castor and Pollux organic chicken cookies on rare occasions (we don't have a Three Dog bakery around here) but the first ingredient even of those is chicken liver, not grain flour, which I can't honestly see how dogs could need or want, for that matter. I'm glad Gracie survived, and more power to Dan and Mark for their incredible business success, and Dan's dedication to keep Gracie going one pan of cookies at a time. But after reading this account of feverish and desperate mixing and baking and substituting ingredients (long before they even had the idea for a business), to keep Gracie fed, I kept thinking how misguided the effort, how much easier and more natural it is just to raw feed and why Dan didn't consider giving her a nice raw meaty bone instead of searching for the perfect "nonmeat" ingredients. I still don't understand that. Later he does talk about baking vegetable beef biscuits, but it still seems to me if I had a starving dog I'd cut a chicken in half -- or for a dog that big, perhaps a whole chicken, and just feed her naturally. Better for her, and so much easier. But apart from that, it's a great tail. I mean tale :)

5 out of 5 stars Humorous Dog Story.......2007-08-16

This book is hilarious and very well written. Dan Dye describes the scenarios with such perfect pitch that I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. He artfully describes his mis-adventures while raising an almost blind and deaf Great Dane puppy and the people that he comes to know and understand while doing so.

          5 out of 5 stars Gracie........2007-06-12

One of the most heartwarming dog stories ever written!
Everybody should read this book, dog lover or not, to experience all the different emotions that express love.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Dan Dye & Mark Beckloff.......2007-03-24

I have given as presents at least ten copies of "Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale". It is such an inspirational and heartwarming story. I will forever be grateful to Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff for sharing the story of Gracie with us. Because of Gracie, they started the Three Dog Bakery, a gourmet food store for pets. Through Three Dog Bakery, Dan and Mark have helped raise money for many homeless dogs. In today's world, it is nice to know that there are people like Dan & Mark.

          5 out of 5 stars Sweet Story...........2007-03-06

A really Sweet book about the kind of dog we would all like to have, and the kind of story we all like to hear. A dog noone wanted turns out to be the best dog....smart, loving,protective....I read this in two days because I couldn't stop reading it....I loved the illustrations in the book, they are just as amusing as the story. You will probably shed a tear but it is more a happy story than sad. Like they say....the only thing wrong with our canine companions is they they don't live long enough. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

          Book Description

This is a companion volume to the authors' excellent book of last year, The Four Winds Guide to Indian Artifacts. In this new book, over 800 color photographs of trade goods to American Indians over the last hundred and fifty years, and more, are featured. These important cultural relics of American history are avidly collected today by museums and enthusiastic individuals alike. Trade beads, frontier goods, military goods, stone relics, photographs, paper goods, and modern replicas of some of the best items are identified in great detail, and the actual auction estimates and prices realized are included in the captions. The authors are traders at the Four Winds Indain Trading Post in St. Ignatius, Montana. Here they have gained over fifty years of experience with authenic goods, and they conduct annual mail/phone/fax auctions which have established the values recorded here. You cannot find a more accurate reference.

Great book if you're into indian trade goods. The trade bead section is especially great w/ lots of color pictures. Auction prices are included which gives a great idea as to the worth of the goods. It's also good just to get an idea of what the trade goods were, not what hollywood says they were. Pretty authentic. Worth the $$$.

                          Book Description

Carrine Gafkjen was, as her daughter remembers, at once the most liberated and unliberated of women. If she had considered the subject at all she would have thought it a waste of time. She firmly believed in destiny; what fate planned for her she dealt with head-on.

In the early 1900s the twenty-five-year-old Gafkjen boarded a train from Minneapolis to claim a homestead for herself on the western North Dakota prairies. She lived alone in her claim shack, barred her door at night against the coyotes, existed on potatoes and salt, and walked five miles to the nearest creek to wash her clothes. A decade later she had, by her own ingenuity, doubled her landholdings and became a secure women of property. Then, at an age when most other women would have been declared spinsters, Carrine Gafkjen married Sever Berg and had six children.

Nothing to Do but Stay tells the story of this uncommon woman with warmth and good humor. It gives testimony to the lasting spirit of our pioneer heritage and, in these uncertain times, to the staying power of family and tradition. This book will appeal to all those with an interest in the settlement of the West, the history of the Great Plains, women's studies, and the perseverance of the early-twentieth-century farmers.

                          5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-09-19

There's no plot here and certainly no white knuckle drama. The book is a series of essays, each chapter relating an event or way of life experienced by the author as a child growing up on the North Dakota plains during tbe early 1900s. From education to farm life to holidays, each was covered with love and humor. I felt like I was getting to know my own grandmother as a child. My only wish was that there were more photographs, but considering the time period it was wonderful to have a few.

5 out of 5 stars this was a GREAT story.......2003-03-27

I stumbled on this book in a used book store. It is the amazing story of the author's parents and their life in rural North Dakota. The book has adventures, anecdotes, and gives the reader a real sense of how families existed in the early 20th century. This was a very entertaining story, although perhaps you can't tell from this review. None of us who have read it could put it down, from my 78 year old mom to my sister who is reading it to her 7 year old daughter.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing story about a frontier Mom!.......2002-02-16

I loved this book. Its a compendium of short pieces about the author's mother, who was a frontier woman with a wonderful outlook on life. I also loved the descriptions of her husband, who had to drive the children through snow, to get to their respective schools, and the descriptions about how the kids were settled in the schoolhouse overnight, while wild mustangs banged against the door. I don't know about you, but I'm not sure I would send my children to a schoolhouse way far away, with food for a week. Can you imagine what they did after school let out... all by themselves? I wanted to hear more about this. The descriptions of quilting are wonderful. It is a great book if you are in the mood to feel cold, hungry, and in North Dakota with the snow beating down upon you. Also if you enjoy descriptions of sumptuous meals at holidays, replete with Norwegian recipes!

                          4 out of 5 stars Memorable.......2001-04-10

The author is the youngest of six children of hard-working Norwegian-speaking parents, and the account of the struggles her parents went thru is awesome. Sometimes I thought the author indulged in hyperbole, and I would have appreciated a little more exactitude, but it no doubt is true that life during the twenties and thirties in northwestern North Dakota was a hard and demanding one. The first part of this book is the best, as the author relates the fantastic efforts necessary for the kids to be educated. There is a lot of discussion of Norwegian food, and those of you who are of Norwegian descent will gobble that talk up, but for me I could not get too interested in how her mother went to extraordinary lengths to prepare, under primitive conditions, the food she was so good at concocting. There is less talk of the interesting political events during the time than I would have liked. Appam, North Dakota, which was apparently a home town to the family during these years, has, according to my 1958 atlas, a population of 18. I would like to have learned whether it was a bigger place when the author was a child. But the upbeat attitude to her childhood was a real plus for this book--not the dreary catalog of hardship one sometimes gets from depression sagas. I liked this book.

There is a kind of paradox in Merrill Collett's beautifully written and eye-opening book: she explains that caring for the dying can bring new life and meaning to caregivers. Using her firsthand experience in a Zen hospice in San Francisco, Collett covers the basics of feeding, cleaning, pain medications, handling visitors, and many more practical aspects of caregiving, but she puts them in a context that allows caregivers to be more mindful of their efforts. She urges people to grow personally while offering support, and to learn how to be fully present and pay attention while recognizing when it's best to merely stay close and do nothing. Stay Close and Do Nothing is a moving, practical, lovingly written book.
