20 tales of shipscats, familiars, and others.......2002-02-15
Many transformations in this one: people reborn as cats, cats reborn as people, and some who have tried both and need restoration to their preferred shape.
Barwood, Lee "A Woman of Her Word" - Tarberry, after a near-death experience in a breeding mill, uses new-found talents to help his rescuer.
Bell, Claire "A Tangled Tahitian Tail" - Told by the first European to set foot on Tahiti: the ship's cat.
de Lint, Charles "Saxophone Joe and the Woman in Black" - The sax player lost his woman when he stumbled across her true name - was she really human? And did he care?
Dunn, Marylois "Teddy Cat" - Cory Johnson's allergic - to everything her stepfather doesn't want her to have: ice cream, the teddy bear he destroyed. But Cory won't let him take the idea of Teddy Bear away from her - so the wild tom that befriends her is Teddy Cat.
Fontenay, Charles L. "Cat O' Nine Tales" - Adrian is a professional writer who makes a modest living through hard work. When Diana Colfax hired him through his agent to live at her family home and write her family history, he accepted the contract. But on his arrival, the situation at Nine Tales is fishy. A young man and woman greet him, saying that the old lady recently died and no arrangements were made for a book. Angered at having packed up his life, including his cat, for a long trip, then being fobbed off with an obvious lie (his agent's got the contract, only a week old, for goodness' sake), Adrian starts poking around. (The ending is somewhat rushed, but the setup is OK.)
Griffin, P.M. "Partners" - As indicated by the title, this is another Bastet story (as in Catfantastic 2 and 5), rather than the Trouble stories of 1 and 4. The cat facing Bastet before his next reincarnation has never had a human Partner in the full sense of the term. Not that he was physically abused in his past life, far from it; he spent his life as a pedigreed Persian, in show cages and stud cages, with excellent care but no affection.
Johnston III, John E. "...But a Glove" - With every full moon, Tom becomes a cat (a wayward gift shared by some descendants of Clan Chattan). Plays the devil with one's social life...
Inks, Caralyn "Fear in Her Pocket" - Jayle is called to help a camilicat shed her old life for a new one, but the price this time comes high.
Lackey, Mercedes "A Tail of Two Skittys" - See my review of her short story collection _Werehunter_, which contains all the Skitty stories to date.
Mayhar, Ardath "Hermione as Spy" - Hermione's first job as a wizard's familiar, fresh from school.
McConchie, Lyn "Moon Scent" - Tale of the dravencat Many Kills.
McQuillin, Cynthia "Cat's World" - Cat acts as Guardian of the Old Knowledge, preserving the laboratory where his kind were designed before the rest of the world ended, because of a prophecy that their creator had once traveled into their present, her future.
Miller, Ann; Rigley, Karen "Snake Eyes" - Lori's aunt and uncle recently died in a fire, survived by their cat, Silver, and their son, Ray. (No accident that her cousin comes second in that list.) But now the auditor hired as part of the proposed sale of the family business has been killed by a hit-and-run driver...
Miller, Sasha "One Too Many Cats" - Continues the tale of young wizard Ferdon, his wife, and his familiar. Ferdon's familiar was once a woman; she's now enduring life as a cat. (She's not much help as a familiar, has a hate / hate relationship with Ferdon's wife, and is *allergic* to cats even after her transformation). Ferdon, who's now aware of the nature of her problem, persuades his wife to help him return the cat to human form. At least, that was the idea...
Norton, Andre "Noble Warrior Meets with a Ghost" - "Noble Warrior" is the translation of Thargun's full name, a Siamese sent by a grateful Princess to young Emmy, the daughter of an Englishman who saved her father's life (see all Catfantastic volumes in sequence for his complete adventures). Here a thief seizes his traveling basket in a train station.
Reyes, Raul; Waters, Elisabeth "Connecticat" - The lama's young nephew hadn't learned the discipline necessary to successfully evade all the traps along the path to rebirth. When his uncle finally locates his reincarnation, he's a LONG way from home...
Scarborough, Elizabeth Ann "The Cat Quest of Mu Mao the Magnificent" - The secret valley of Shambala is the only haven left, after the world ended in blinding light and thunder. Mu Mao, who has achieved the highest state of enlightenment (rebirth as the last cat in the world), is, alas, now subject to feline urges - and having gone to so much trouble to get In to Shambala, he must now go Out.
Straub, Mary H. "The Cat, the Wizards, and the Bedpost" - A continuation of the Flax & Drop stories from 1 & 2 (which are concluded in 4). Drop, the stray accidentally changed into a human boy, may finally return to normal: the wizard who developed the keep-shape spell has asked Flax for help in another matter.
Schimel, Lawrence "To Skein a Cat" - The lonely Fates have adopted 3 kittens - and we all know about mixing kittens with thread.
Schwartz, Susan "Asking Mr. Bigelow" - Lisa isn't a cat person - she's more of a mouse: the kind of mouse who waits in lines forever while the cats get served first. Now she's suffering from a migraine after losing yet another promotion, and someone on the street directs her to Bigelow's (an upscale drugstore). But Mr. Bigelow is a cat, and he can see what she *really* needs for her problem. If you like this, try "Cat Tale" by Vicki Ann Heydron (M.Z.Bradley's _Greyhaven_ anthology).
Wonderful collection!.......2000-11-26
I loved this continuation of stories about our most beloved pet-the cat. I especially liked the diversity of styles. Glad to see continuations of Skitty and Noble Warrior
A great collection!.......1998-03-09
Once again a delightful blend of authors have come up with tales about cats and the people who are owned by them. I always enjoy a collection of shorts and this was no exception!

Book Description
For this tenth anniversary edition of her popular The Uncheese Cookbook, author Jo Stepaniak has completely revised her acclaimed orginal recipes and added many new ones. Includes an introduction by Vesanto Melina, RD, on safely eliminating dairy products from the diet.
Customer Reviews:
I Remember Cheese Fondly.......2007-10-02
I remember cheese fondly although I don't eat it anymore. Jo Stepaniak's The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook offers recipes which make a valiant attempt to imitate the texture and flavor of dairy products, but the most successful aspect of the book is that it makes the comfort food quality of cheese available to those who may have never expected to experience it again.
My favorite recipes from the book so far are the Gooey Grilled Cheez, the Durritas seasoning (the taste of Nacho Cheese Dorritos), the Unprocessed Cheez Sauce (I like it on burritos), Spinafels (Spinach Ricotta Balls), the French Onion Soup Gruyere and most recently the Philadelphia Potato Chowder. The book contains a variety of salads, dressings, soups, pasta dishes, deserts, and block uncheeses. Everything I have tried from The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook has turned out nicely. I strongly recommend this book to vegans (or to anyone else) who would like to experience a unique collection of comfort foods.
A dairy-free miracle.......2007-09-20
Wow, talk about a cheesy resource! With my focus on all things dairy-free, I was amazed that I had not yet picked up a copy of this cookbook. I think that two things held me back: I don't really miss cheese, as I was never a big fan of the stuff; and I couldn't imagine an entire cookbook focused on one type of food.
Well unbeknownst to me, this wasn't just a book about making fake cheddar. Sure, it contains tons of made from scratch cheezes, from slicing Swizz Cheez, to the softer Brie, to a saucy Nacho Cheez. Yet, it goes so many steps further, reminding me just how many foods rely on that creamy and cheesy taste. Blintzes, fondue, pesto, pizza, quiche, alfredo sauce, cheesecakes, French onion soup, lasagna ... you name it and the author Jo Stepaniak has the recipe answer. I was impressed.
Seriously, this is a must have book for any former cheese-loving vegan or dairy-free consumer. Sure, creating an exact duplicate sans dairy can be an uphill battle, and depending on each person's tastes, one recipe or another may not be their perfect fit. But I would be truly shocked if you couldn't find at least a handful of recipes in this cookbook to soothe your inner cheese-craving beast.
I recently trialed the Traditional Macaroni and Cheez, and can't wait to sample some of the calzones (I do miss pizza) and focaccias.
Making the actual "cheeses" does require a few ingredients that may be new-to-you. Luckily, there really are just a handful of these special ingredients required, allowing you to buy a good sized package of each once, and then reap the rewards of various "cheeses" for months. Also, while tofu definitely makes itself known in this cookbook, a surprising number of recipes are soy-free. In a good majority of the recipes, the author uses a variety of nuts, seeds, beans, grains, and seasonings to achieve the right consistency and flavor.
Amazing.......2007-08-25
I just purchased this book, and today I made the Gee Wiz. I'm telling you, this stuff is incredible. I've read most of the reviews here and I took the advise offered. I used a bit less lemon juice and a bit less Nutritional yeast. It was a hit with the entire family. DH and I have gone vegan for medical reasons. He really misses his cheese. This stuff hit the spot. He was ready to eat the entire container. I can't wait to try more of the recipes. When I do, I will be back to update my review.
Ok for those who want to know, it does not taste exactly like cheese.
However if I had not been the one to make it and had it on snack table with crackers, I would have been asking for the cheese spread recipe. It is really that good. I will definitely be making more of this and I will be taking it to homes that are not vegan. I can't wait to see their reactions.
A Great Way to Break a Cheese Habit!.......2007-05-13
As a vegetarian who is struggling to break a cheese habit in order to go completely vegan, this book is a God send. The recipes are absolutely delicious, and I've even used my slow cooker with several. Try it; you'll be glad you did!
Great source of decent recipes.......2007-05-07
You'll have to have access to a health foods/specialty store to buy some of the ingredients but if you're on a dairy-free restriction this book can at least help you have some sort of normalcy back to your diet. If you're used to eating gooey dairy goodness this food probably won't live up but if you've been missing your big ol' bowl of mac-n-cheese while living with new restrictions the recipe here will come pretty close. Good food, easy directions and a great resource for hard-to-find alternative foods.

Customer Reviews:
Not really for dummies!.......2007-09-26
This book is required reading for many retired racing greyhound adoption groups, and with good reason: it's excellent. We read it twice before making the plunge to adopt our first greyhound (we're up to two). It's hard to translate the written word on training to actually doing it, but stick with it. I took one of Ms. Livingood's classes and found my hound and I were ahead of the game because we had been using the training tips from the book. Within three months, we passed the Canine Good Citizen test (okay, I admit it ... greyhounds are naturally good citizens).
So, what are you waiting for? Buy the book and adopt a greyhound!
Required reading !!!.......2007-07-08
The last word for the lay person on retired racers.
AFTER reading this book cover to cover (2 sittings), I adopted the most wonderful ex racing girl of 8 years. It is the best thing I have ever done. If you will always keep your dog leashed and are genuinely interested in this sweet, loving and gentle breed please get this book and bring one of these wonderful K9's into your heart and home forever. You will be so happy you did.
A great insight into owning Racing Greyhounds.......2007-06-27
I bought this book to help me decide whether I would be making the right choice in adopting a racing greyhound. I wasn't disappointed, this book did tell me a lot of the things I needed to know before making the decision final. I now know what to expect when I am ready to bring a racing greyhound into my house, my life, and my heart.
The training methods in this book may work for some, but for me, it is a little vague. I'm fairly certain that the training method detailed in this book may work for some dogs, but for many others, it could achieve little to nothing. I advise researching other training methods after reading the one detailed, and making your own mind up. No two dogs are the same, and no two owners are the same, and ultimately, the choice of training method has to be based on the traits of both dog and owner.
Well worth reading, especially for those inexperienced with dogs, and in particular greyhounds.
Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies.......2007-02-24
An excellent guide for the adoption of our first Greyhound.
I learned a lot.......2007-01-19
We adopted our first greyhound knowing so much about them. I have done days and weeks and hours on end researching them. I came across this book and bought it for my husband who's not on the computer as much as I am. And we both learned a lot from this book...it's very detailed. I would definately suggest reading this book if you have or want a greyhound
Customer Reviews:
Spiders Games or peoples games??.......2002-12-14
I found this book to be extreamly easy to follow and understand, wereas other books took it for granted that everyone was just born with a loom in hand. I haven't tried weaving before, but this book was not only helpful, but also inspirational as well. It's full of color pictures of weavings & weavers from all over the world. It gives the little details that many others overlook. No matter how you weave, this book will help. It includes the patterns for many types of cloth, and shows how to make your own loom, even a cardboard one!

Book Description
Winner of the 2005 Lambda Literary Award, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award: the first and "essential" (Choice) biography of the author, poet, and American icon of womanhood, black arts, and survival.
During her lifetime, Audre Lorde (1934-1992), author of the landmark Cancer Journals, created a mythic identity for herself that retains its vitality to this day. Drawing from the private archives of the poet's estate and numerous interviews, Alexis De Veaux demystifies Lorde's iconic status, charting her conservative childhood in Harlem; her early marriage to a white, gay man with whom she had two children; her emergence as an outspoken black feminist lesbian; and her canonization as a seminal poet of American literature. 18 photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Unafraid to Fight.......2004-09-07
Alexis DeVeaux presents a comprehensive account of self-described feminist, lesbian, and poet warrior, Audre Lorde. The author pulls together a myriad of published documents, unpublished journal entries by Audre Lorde herself, and a host of interviews with personal friends and family members to create a well documented look at the poet's life. The book is divided into two major sections called "lives." The first life begins prior to Audre's birth, and highlights some aspects of her parent's early life, their eventual marriage and move from the Caribbean to the United States. This family background helps readers understand Audre's nearly lifelong quest to come to terms with her relationship with her often emotionally detached parents. This portion of the book also details information about Audre's childhood, educational background, and young adult life. We learn about Audre's marriage to a white, gay, man and their eventual divorce and follow her process of "coming out" regarding her own lesbianism. Her long-term relationship with a white woman, Frances Clayton, and the challenges associated with raising a bi-racial son and daughter in a lesbian household during an era of rampant, overt racism and sexism was also discussed. DeVeaux also takes time to highlight some of Audre Lorde's flaws, thus providing a somewhat more balanced view of the author. Her professional career as a poet develops slowly, and the evolution of her writing career parallels the evolution of her political views and personal growth.
The second section of the book, "The Second Life," continues to explore her career development, chronicles her battles with cancer in more detail, and ends with her death. Audre Lorde supported freedom and equality for all, regardless of race, gender, class, or sexual orientation. However, because of her strong views and personal lifestyle, she often found herself on the fringes. Many white feminists were uncomfortable with her views on race, while those involved in the black power movement tended to be uncomfortable with her feminist ideology and her lesbianism. Yet she used her own struggles, particularly her battle with cancer, as a means to educate, motivate, and inspire.
I enjoyed WARRIOR POET and was impressed by Alexis DeVeaux's attention to detail and the time she spent helping readers understand the social and political climate of the times. There were times when I felt she went a little too far "setting the stage" and wanted to read more about Audre and less about other poets, or politics. Audre seemed to use her identity to take on very public battles for women's rights, gay rights, and so forth. But I found myself wanting to know more about how her children handled their mother's public persona. I also wondered how her very conservative, Catholic mother and her other siblings responded to Audre's lifestyle, and this issue was surprisingly never addressed. In spite of its sometimes academic feel, this is a must read for anyone that wants to learn more about an important literary figure.
