Book Description

The ground thudded and trembled, the echoes again, as Cheyenne Jasmine Ferret cut a half-circle to stop, breathing hard, by Montgomery and his trusted mount Boffin. It was a familiar sight to all who lived beneath Montana's Sweetroot Mountains, these two ranchkits riding through the morning light, ever together, completely unalike.

Montgomery has the deep stillness of the outdoors in his soul; Cheyenne Jasmine is less quiet within. He understands the thoughts of animals and the endless colors of a single mountain daisy. She watches movie after movie, drawn indoors by emotion and light.

Kithood ends one morning when Cheyenne Jasmine climbs aboard the train out of Little Paw, destination Hollywood. Montgomery stays put, unwilling to leave the country and his future with animals. They do not realize they are in love until the moment she departs.

In time, Cheyenne becomes Jasmine Ferret, the Jasmine Ferret, international film star, darling of the tabloids; Montgomery a sheep-whisperer, a rancher, and some suspect philosopher ferret. Years pass before they meet again, long after each has found the rewards of their separate callings. Yet the highest reward, they discover, waits for them both together, and it's one that they will share for the rest of their lives.

Rancher Ferrets on the Range is a tale about sacrifice and longing, fulfillment and success, and a love that waits patiently, sure in the knowledge it will find a way home.

4 out of 5 stars Ferret Chronicles.......2007-01-20

This is amusing reading for those who enjoy adventure and/or flying. I'm not sure what the point of substituting ferrets for peoples means. However, once you accept this premise (i.e. the suspension of disbeief) then the story is much more enjoyable. This is almost more of a short story, than a book. The book is only about 135 pages. I like the author, Richard Bach. I have read many of his books, and have never been disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Special story.......2003-10-02

On earth Shamrock Ferret has always answered questions almost from the day she was born so it is not surprising that she especially enjoys responding to those inquiries that seem impossible to obtain a reply. Her upbringing became her work and her skills have earned her a reputation as a successful sleuth. What Shamrock does is sit in the Cases Unsolved Chair to ponder the puzzle until she finds the solution.

Having just succeeded in solving the Case of the Curious Patterns for local farmers she accepts a partnership with Mr. Burroughs. However, she also begins her most difficult mystery. She "sees" a forlorn ferret hopelessly moaning on a dying world seeking someone or some way to save the survivors of the Ferret war that has devastated his people. Sitting in her chair she begins to wonder if this vision is a shadow from the past reaching out to her for help.

Besides the cleverly designed time paradox (not explained here), readers will appreciate Richard Bach's latest tale that clearly cries for give peace a chance. The story line focuses on Shamrock and her use of logic, psychometry, cryptography, and patterns to solve mysteries. Yet with all this Mr. Bach insures his audience understands his message that war is a last resort not a first preemptive strike because of the full impact on the innocent reminiscent of as Animal Farm in relation to Communism.

Fourth grader Akiko continues her adventures on Planet Smoo after being selected as the one earthling suited for the job of rescuing Prince Froptoppit from the evil Alia Rellapor (read all about it in Akiko on the Planet Smoo). Akiko and the extraterrestrial crew of her flying boat--prim Mr. Beeba, gallant Spuckler, robot Gax, and eerie, levitating Poog--lose their way over the Moonguzzit Sea, crash-land into the waiting jaws of a giant sea snake, and make their way to the Sprubly Islands, where a tiny clairvoyant queen awaits them to offer guidance. But the other Sprubly Islanders are not so welcoming as Queen Pwip, and when Akiko's friends disappear into the sky, she must fend for herself in this strange, Lilliputian world, complete with brave, blustering soldiers and an exotic palace.

Based on Mark Crilley's original comic strip, the Akiko series of illustrated novels is bursting with all the elements of a fast-paced adventure story. Akiko and her friends travel in air, underwater, and overland, where they meet unusual friends and enemies. Throughout, Akiko struggles with her role as heroine; starting as a shy fourth grader in Middleton, Earth, she's come a long way. Homesickness and bouts of uncertainty never get the best of her, though, and the reader will love watching Akiko's spunky nature bloom as she rises to every occasion. At novel's end, Prince Froptoppit is still unsaved--watch for future episodes from Crilley. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars The Quest Continues............2002-04-09

Akiko, Mr. Beeba, Poog, Spuckler, and Gax return for another chapter in their quest to rescue the kidnapped Prince Froptoppit from the clutches of Alia Rellapor.

With characters and situations based on his long-running Comic Book Akiko, Writer/Illustrator Mark Crilley does a good job of presenting the reader with the information they may have missed by not reading the first book, but also manages to keep the plot moving forward. He also seems to be getting his children's-book writing chops built up, as I thought this book had a much better style than the first one. The art is great too; simple, yet detailed. The characters are fun, and the story is pretty gentle, so younger readers shouldn't find anything too scary.

4 out of 5 stars Part 2 (of 4) of the Akiko adventures.......2000-10-01

This book continues where the first in this series of 4 left off: Earth-born fourth-grader Akiko and her interstellar adventurer friends are on an exciting mission to rescue a young prince who has been kidnaped by the story's as-yet-unseen villain, Alia Rellapoor. Akiko's journey takes her to the Sprubly Islands (hence the title), where she must confront the Sprubly monarch, Queen Pwip, for help in their quest. But danger and surprises lurk in the Sprubly Islands, and Akiko finds herself in an amazing adventure before she realizes it.

Mark Crilley, the author and illustrator of the Akiko novels (and comic from which the novels derive), is in better shape with this second book of the series, mostly because the necessary exposition has already been dealt with in book one. The plot flows quickly, and there is plenty of excitement to keep the story moving, without being too frightening for young children. Being part of a series may make the story hard to follow for those who don't know the story, but there is enough adventure and great storytelling moments to amuse even newcomers.

This book can be enjoyed as a group read with children (there are enough pictures and descriptions to captivate a young audience), or for solo readers who can handle a third- or fourth-grade reading level.

3 out of 5 stars a good read for a nine year old, fast-paced and entertaining.......2000-09-29

This second in the Akiko series is a pleasure in that it features a strong female figure as protagonist, a rarity in fiction for this age group. Yet just as the Harry Potter series appeals to girls despite the fact that its main character is a boy, my son enjoyed this book, and the previous one, even though Akiko is a fourth grade girl. The story is not particularly original, with parts reminding me of Star Wars, Gulliver's Travels, and The Wizard of Oz, but it kept my son's attention and made him want to read on.

Diane Rossen Worthington's Seriously Simple: Easy Recipes for Creative Cooks delivers on the promise of its title. The award-winning chef and author provides sophisticated flavor combinations while keeping the ingredients, and, most importantly, prep time, to a minimum. Chilled Summer Squash Soup with Basil makes a great starter course or light entrée; Grilled Lamb Chops with Cilantro-Mint Sauce yields a rich yet refreshing result with almost no work, especially with the use of a food processor; and the Summer Fruit Crisp (much less work than a homemade pie) includes a custard layer made with crème fraîche. Keeping with her theme of simplicity, Worthington has provided many suggestions for "advanced preparation" so that the busy cook can do some, or all, of the preparation long before mealtime. The most unique element of this cookbook is "the clever cook could" entry with each dish, in which Worthington makes suggestions for substituting ingredients and how to use the leftovers in savvy and tasty ways. Worthington's recipes will help shorten the work to get food on the table but should also increase the enjoyment while at it. --Teresa Simanton

5 out of 5 stars Best cookbook I've ever bought: fast, easy, gourmet results.......2007-07-29

This book is outstanding. The recipes have few ingredients and most are fast to make, but taste like gourmet California cuisine. I have been cooking every night this week because I want to try all the recipes. My boyfriend has several times said the results are equivalent to, or in the case of the pacific island short ribs tonight, better than top-notch restaurants. Also excellent was the avocado-pea cold soup as a starter, the citris tuna, the grilled curry chicken breasts, and the stir-fried ginger shrimp.

I can't recommend it highly enough. The only downside is that I want more of these recipes!

        5 out of 5 stars The best I've found.......2007-02-18

All the recipes in this book give delicious results with minimal effort. My kind of cookbook -- I wish she would write a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Seriously Simple (and elegant).......2006-08-01

I LOVE this book. The title is perfect. Every recipe I have tried has seriously been simple to prepare. Great color photographs make it easy to flip through and find something new to try. The dishes actaully look like the pictures! Each dish turns out tasting wonderful, and many have become repeat favorites in our house. I've purchased this book as a gift several times and won't hesitate to do so again.

        5 out of 5 stars Seriously AWESOME.......2005-07-19

This cook book is one of the better finds out there. Most cook books with the word "simple" in the title are filled with recipes that start with a can of condensed soup. This cookbook really is creative. The fish stew is fabulous. A friend of mine prepared it for me (along with the marscapone toasts with honey and berries). I like it so much I had to get the cookbook. I've since tried several other dishes--all fabulous.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and delicious.......2004-12-13

I love this book too. Most of the recipes are terrific. The endive, pear and roquefort salad is a staple for company, and I love the interesting footnotes "the clever cook could add.....". Lets you be creative. A nice book, with nice photos. I just ordered her other book on Summer entertaining. Highly recommend this one!

Are you half of an elegant, interesting couple, living beautifully in a perfectly decorated home that's the envy of all your guests? If not, Living Together: How Couples Create Design Harmony at Home provides an intimate tour of the extraordinary homes of 15 couples who have joined their lives and their possessions to create strikingly original and glamorous domestic environments. A painting couple in the Hamptons, an interior designer in London, a fashion designer in Los Angeles, a landscape designer in Hawaii--all opened their doors to photographer Erica Lennard, architect Denis Colomb, and writer Julia Szabo. Lush color photographs with accompanying explanatory text illustrate how these couples combined individual tastes to achieve unified, dramatic interior design statements. After each home's profile, a set of "harmonious how-to's" are offered to summarize the couple's aesthetic philosophy. But the real treat here is the illusion of being a virtual guest in (take your pick) a picturesque villa on the Mediterranean, an eccentrically restored home in Barcelona, a minimalist loft in London, a stone quarry in Provence, or perhaps a formal townhouse in Manhattan. --Judy Fireman

This book wasn't as great as I expected it to be. I thought the idea of a book on the combining of spaces would take into account each person's taste & style and show how the two work together. There's a lot of text in this book about how to merge lives and living spaces, but no real visuals on how that happens. They have one sample set of photos that show the couple and photos of their own spaces and then the merging into one. That was great...but the rest of the bok shows photos of the finished final spaces, which are beautiful but don't show visually the separate styles. This is a great book in concept and if you want to read every word you may get the information I am looking for visually.

For the first time a design book takes us behind the scenes to learn how couples actually make things work together in their homes. The photographs are astounding, the choices of couples all interesting and creative and each storiy has alot to teach us.I recomend this book to young couples about to move in together and to older couples who may be considering redecorating or moving. It is a must!!

5 out of 5 stars brilliant and insightful look at the interconnectedness of the Diaspora with the world............2007-08-31

I had the privilige to see Robert Farris Thompson, when the FACES OF THE GODS exhibit came to the Seattle Art Museum. Dr. Thompson came to speak about the history of the orishas (gods and goddesses) in the santeria and vodoo religious practices amongst the Afro-Cubans, Afro-Brazilians and African-Americans. What sets Thompson apart from other scholars is his genuine passion for the subject matter he has well-researched, as well as his vast knowledge of the Diaspora, and the cultural interconnectedness of people of African descent throughout the globe.

FLASH OF THE SPIRIT examines on a closer, more intimate level the cultural significance of the gods and goddesses depicted in mythology and art of those who are practitioners of (among other religions) Yoruba, Santeria and Voodoo faiths. We see beautiful and powerful illustrations and photographs of the jewelry, textiles, plates and figurines used in worship, and we also get insight into the characteristics of the gods and goddesses, their meaning in the lives of those who pray to them, and how this plays into other parts of society, human interaction and behavior. I come away from this book feeling that we are lot closer than we think, and that while "African-American" and "African" are important distinctions to recognize in terms of cultural definition, they are also at times parallel and quite similar to the indigenous Native cultures of South and Central America, as well as other parts of the world. This is fascinating material and Farris Thompson's writing style is pure poetry. I guarantee that once you start reading this book, you won't be able to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Seminal, Uplifting, Beautiful.......2003-03-11

If I could give this book 6 stars I would. Robert Farris Thompson presents our rich, ancient history making it quite clear that African Americans are not an isolated group but a group intimately connected to particular cultures and societies in West Africa and the African diaspora. The rich text is generously supported by illustrated plates. Essential reading for those who wish to gain an understanding of African cosmology, philosophy and art in relation to the African diaspora (North and South America, copious information on Brazil, the Carribean etc) Great reference material for students, artists, writers, researchers and thinkers. As an educator, writer and author I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars An eye-opening look at the African soul in America.......2000-06-08

I enjoyed this book when I first read it as much for the kinds of bridges it seemed to make as for his own writing style and subject matter. R.F. Thompson, who I had the pleasure of meeting once in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is someone who along with being highly knowledgeable cares a great deal for the subject. Where the book could be considered lacking I would say is it's way of seeming dated. It bares some cultural prejudice which, considering the cultural remoteness of the subject matter when compared to the intellectual/cultural arena of the writer(African and African-American, Afro-Cuban/Hispanic culture vs. Post-World War II Ivy League) - and how well he did anyway- is forgiveable, but present nonetheless. If you are expecting some pretty powerful things to be said about Coltrane, or the early days of Rap music and Hip-hop dance (now in its third decade of existence already), or Modigliani, or other things that are in the forefront of the present culture's mind, to a certain degree you will be disappointed. However, if you had no idea other than the Alex Haley "Roots" era rhetoricals about the derivation of many African-American and Hispanic/Hispanic-American cultural paradigms, this will enlighten you in ways that will have you going to the bookstore to see what else he and many others have written on the subjects. I recommend it- particularly for lovers of European modern art, studies of religion, and other things influenced by the Mother country.

4 out of 5 stars African threads in Diasporan artforms.......2000-03-30

Thompson's work on African retentions in New World artforms is seminal in the field of African Diasporan art history. However, Flash of the Spirit reads more like a best seller than a textbook. Fascinating details and insights into the meanings of art from Haiti to Georgia to Brazil, with excellent context for all objects. Great for anyone at all curious about African heritage, religion, and art. Occasionally thick reading, as one must trace entire cosmologies, but well layed out, full of illustrations, and textually easy to follow. Thompson makes an obscure genre easily accesible to readers of varied backgrounds.

bell hooks, who teaches English at New York's City College, is well-known as an abrasive, take-no-prisoners feminist cultural critic. In this moving memoir of her childhood she explains the roots of her forceful and rigorous attitude to life and literature. She grew up in a poor Southern black family, an heir to poverty and racism, surrounded by people too wrapped up in their own struggles to offer much help to her. She writes here of her mother's suffering in an abusive marriage, of her siblings' rejection of her for being "different," of her own painful discovery of sexuality, and of how she found escape through books.

              Book Description

Stitching together girlhood memories with the finest threads of innocence, feminist intellectual bell hooks presents a powerfully intimate account of growing up in the South. A memoir of ideas and perceptions, Bone Black shows the unfolding of female creativity and one strong-spirited child's journey toward becoming a writer. She learns early on the roles women and men play in society, as well as the emotional vulnerability of children. She sheds new light on a society that beholds the joys of marriage for men and condemns anything more than silence for women. In this world, too, black is a woman's color-worn when earned-daughters and daddies are strangers under the same roof, and crying children are often given something to cry about. hooks finds good company in solitude, good company in books. She also discovers, in the motionless body of misunderstanding, that writing is her most vital breath.

bell hooks is known for her many books on the politics of art and culture. This addition is more about the processing of becoming a mature thoughtful writer. Her road was a painful one but all that she experienced fortified her work process and personality. There is some beautiful visual writing and depth in bell hooks' bone black.

4 out of 5 stars A prose experiment that suceeds in providing insight.......2000-08-03

At first, I found the uniformly sized (3-page) chunks of invoking with stripped-down sentences in bell hook's Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood somewhat affectless and very structurally arbitrary. Hemingway sprang to mind, but then I thought of Stein's syntax (and the role she claimed in forming Hemingway's style). Hooks's repetitions are more subtle, and perhaps her prose is, too, because eventually I found it compelling. The pain of being different while young and vulnerable came through the chilly prose.

What she describes of female complicity in male privilege is particularly frightening and compelling. She experienced little female solidarity, being rejected by her five sisters and never able to please her mother (who agreed with her father that her spirit needed to be broken).
