Book Description
Rudyard Kipling's autobiography, Something of Myself, was the author's last work, but it has not received the serious attention it deserves. Thomas Pinney's edition of the work, supplemented by other autobiographical pieces, aims to change that. Professor Pinney, a leading textual editor currently engaged on Kipling's letters, has consulted the available source material relating to Something of Myself. He has constructed an outline of the book's composition; described the history of its publication; established a text and a set of variants; and given a critical account of the book's design and its main themes. His annotations to the work (and to the supplementary pieces) identify references and allusions, and provide a biographical context against which Kipling's selections, omissions, and distortions may clearly be seen. The extent to which Kipling's description of his life failed to match what actually happened is extraordinary. Two of the additional items presented here (Kipling's Indian diary of 1885 and the illustrations he made for his autobiographical story, 'Baa Baa, Black Sheep') are previously unpublished. Pinney shows how they, and other forms of autobiographical writing, reflect upon or complicate the narrative of Something of Myself. This carefully prepared edition sheds new light on Kipling as a man and writer.

Insanely plagiaristic.......2006-06-26
This entire series is an enormous rip-off of The Lord of the Rings. Worse, perhaps, than The Sword of Shannara. At least the latter was a bit more exciting and adventurous.
too routine.......2002-11-21
Although a slight improvement over
part two the entire series still
suffers from sluggish pacing.
Calix Stay Is Definetely Staying On My Bookshelf!!!!.......2001-07-18
This book was such a great read after I picked it up from a local used bookstore. The transition from Calix Stay's prequel ("Faragon Fairingay") was really smooth and kept the storyline fresh. The main heroes are still the famous trio of the Bear, Dwarf, and Otter, who are trying to cross the river called Calix Stay, for safety. They must guard an important relic with their lives from the destructive minions of the Dark Queen, Dorini, and the only way they can do that is reach the Meadows of the Sun across the Calix Stay. On their way they are hindered by enemies and eventually wind up in an ancient underground realm where they'll find both, allies and enemies that will determine the success of the trio in their endeavors to protect the fate of Atlanton Earth from the Dark Queen. I loved this book, and it was a really easy read (as a matter of fact, it was the shortest book in the series.) I love the cover art as much as the story inside. Though this book has it's really depressing moments, I have faith that Bear, Dwarf, and Otter will some way find a way to win out against the vile Dark Queen... And that we shall find out in the fourth and final book of the series, "Squaring the Circle".
Volume 3 takes the journey even further along.......1998-03-10
Volume Three takes the heroes through capture and tragic escape, to a meeting with new friends and a mystical journey underground. Keeps up the pace and holds interest.

Basic Conceptions of Physical Reality.......2005-08-21
The other reviewers have been a little excited and mistated the propositions that this book outlines.
1. Einstein never proposed a "hidden variables" theory, he was against this formulation. It was David Bohm who proposed hidden variables.
2. Einstein's ironic statement was "Does the moon disappear when I'm not looking at it?" This was stated in order to show the absurdity of the Copenhagen Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, which states that there are no particles in the universe until scientists perform experiments; i.e. the experiments themselves 'create' reality ahead of them, creating an illusion that scientists are exploring a reality that is independent of their mental existance.
"Einstein's Moon" is an excellent summary of that small, but important, battle that occured between the realists, lead by Einstein, and the quantum nihilists, lead by Niels Bohr.
The surprising state of affairs today, summed up under the ruberic of "Bell's Inequality" has yet more surprises waiting just around the corner. This is an area of physics and philosophy that can and will produce world-changing results in the very near future.
So, "Einstein's Moon" is excellent reading for anyone who wants to be prepared for the next revolution in man's understanding of the universe!
If I look at the moon does it disappear?.......2005-01-09
If I look at the moon does it disappear?
The Quantum Double Slit paradox: Quantum theory teaches that light is ultimately made up of finite and indivisible quanta called photons.
Common sense dictates that since a photon is indivisible, a single photon can only pass through one slit at a time. Therefore, the photon must pass through slit A or B and then hit the photographic particle screen. If one blocks slit B and measures the results of the photon passing through slit A, the result should match commonsense and since the photon can only pass through one slit the interference pattern can not form; however, when the results of a very large number of these individual events are collected, the familiar interference pattern appears, as if the photon also passed through slit B. This is where the quantum world departs with logic and common sense. The photon acts like it can be at two places at once. It seems light and electrons can behave both like a particle and wave.
Radium 228 demonstrates the concept of the quantum jump. An elementary particle sitting inside the nucleus has too much energy and wants to escape, but no event exists to cause the escape; however, a quantum particle seems to move between two points without occupying the intermediate space in between the two points. This is called the quantum jump. The particle makes a discontinuous leap defying commonsense. At the instant before the leap it occupies a local space and later it is somewhere else. It seems space-time changes shape and the particle emerges in a different topology.
Plank and Einstein claim light existed in discrete packages called quanta. Quanta are so small they are not observable in the large scale world. In large scale light is observed as continuous wave. In thinking about a model for atom, Bohr realized energy of an electron as it orbits the nucleus could not gradually lose energy. Gradual energy loss would mean the electron would collapse immediately into the nucleus and all matter voids out itself. Electrons can not gradually spin inwardedly, they can only jump orbit to orbit. An electron-planet changes its orbit only by losing or collecting a whole quantum of energy.
Heisenburg struggle with the perfect predictable model of the atom and his work in non-communtive matrices formed the uncertainty principle: Error in velocity X Error in position = planks constant, such that, decreasing the error in position increase the uncertainty in velocity and attempting to pin velocity increase uncertainty in velocity. So, if the information about position and velocity is no longer possible to pin down then a prediction about path is impossible. Heisenburg originally believed a path existed but was unknown. Bohr corrected Heisenburg and stated, "the electron does not have a path" meaning that all information about the path was ambiquous. Bohr further introduced the notion of complementarity suggesting Quantum Universe could not be contained within one description.
In an attempt to defend classic determinism, Schrodinger constructed a mathematic wave equation capable of matching the exact calculations by Pauli and Heisenburg's matrix quantum theory. The wave equations turned out to explain hydrogen spectrums perfectly. Born realized Schrodinger incorrected applied the equations as material waves and it turns out the wave equations represented probabilities. The wave function corresponded to the probability of discovering an electron in a region of space. The wave equation predicted where electrons would appear on the screen in the double slit experiment 100 percent. The wave function could not predict the actual position of the electron.
A logic challenge by Albert Einstein, Boria Podolsky, and Nathan Rosen (EPR) would form presenting a logic paradox charging the Copenhagen Intrepretation (disruption or creation as a reason a particle could not be measured) as ambiquous, therefore, concluding the quantum theory was incomplete. The paradox suggests we measure Bs velocity and deduce the velocity of A from it. But since we have nothing to do with A, this means A is in such a state, with this certain velocity. Suppose, we measure Bs position again it is possible to know As position. Both position and velocity are "cards of identity" that have a definite physical existence and the Heinsburg uncertainty principle can not account for this, the theory is incomplete.
John Bell reformulation began as a thought experiment extending work by David Bohm. Bohm's experiment shots two particle opposite direction of each other, at detectors A and B. The resulting measurement is called C.
Every electron has a spin and it can have a value of either up or down. In the detector there is a fifty-fifty chance of up or down, such that, 50 percent register up and 50 percent register down. Pair of electrons initially in a well-defined state fly-off in opposite directions and measurements is done at opposite side of the laboratory. The independent output of A and B is random. The result of Bohm's experiment can be accounted by using conventional Quantum Theory. Bell improved the experiment by changing the angle of the detector and predicted C=- Cos theta where theta is the angle of orientation of the detector. A spin detector can be thought of as a traffic signal. This signal directs up electrons along one route and down electrons along another path. If a second detector is placed after the first, if the second signal is located on the up road, then 100 percent of the traffic will register up. In Quantum mechanical terms the first measurement has forced the state up and repeating the measurement will give the same answer. If theta is 90 degrees then 50 percent of the electrons will go along the up path and at 180 degree up electrons become down. One of the detectors is given a small rotation changing the orientation of the detector and breaks the 100 percent correlation as predicted by Quantum Mechanics.
God Does Play Dice With The Speed Of Light.......1999-03-03
Einstein thought quantum uncertainty would eventually be explained by "Hidden Variables" . Little did he realize those "Hidden Variables" would travel faster than the speed of light. I wonder what Einstein would say about the breakdown of his speed of light constant by those variables?
A very important book, though not a great read........1998-03-06
I found the explanations of the standard modern physics subjects to be mediocre except the part about Bell's Theorem. The significance lies not in the treatment of the subject (Bell's Theorem) but in the fact that Peat has tackled the subject at all. This theorem may prove to be the most important discovery in human history. Experimental proof (I've heard tell that it has been proven.) of local indeterminacy is mind-boggling. Why every science writer worth his salt isn't jumping to come up with a better write up is beyond me. This book is a must read--even for real students of quantum mechanics.
Please Update and Reprint!.......1997-10-29
What a good book! The metaphors for the layman are usually dead-on, although the heart of the paradox of Bell's Theorem is fuzzy, and better handled in "Shroedinger's Kittens". Otherwise, this book does the best job of navigating clearly through the history of the debate over reality.

Great characters.......2003-04-09
Normally I'm not a big fan of police procedurals, so I'm not even sure why I picked it up at first. But darned if I didn't find myself really getting into the story! I realized that the reason I enjoyed this book so much was because of the characters.
Ty Merrick is great, with her condition that is both blessing and curse. Gibson keeps me guessing. Sometimes he seems cold and calculating, and at other times he truly seems to care for Merrick. He's a good foil for her. And even LaRue and Baba are fun to read.
I know Denise Vitola has written several other books in the series. I hope she continues.
One of my favourites.......2003-01-30
Ty Merrick is one of my favourite science fiction characters, and Quantum Moon is one of my favourite science fiction books. The setting is excellently done, with an admirable blend of the familiar and the exotic. The heroine, Ty Merrick, is tough, admirable, and believable. Vitola shows a keen understanding of superstition and mythology. I highly recommend this novel.
Great blend of Sci Fi & Mystery.......2000-04-06
Ty Merrrick might not be a werewolf in the traditional sense, but she's one great cop...er district marshall. She and her partner have to navigate a near (and very believable) future where "Humanitarian Ideals" rule everyone's lives and most civilians structure their reality around invisible magics. The mystery is nicely paced as one interview leads to another until the climax. This will leave you wanting more.

This is meant to be a survival guide for living on your own for the first time, but I assure you that it is much, much more. This book is useful for people of any age, even if you've been paying the rent for more years than you'd like to admit.
Everything from the expected info on nutrition and cooking (including microwaving real meals), shopping tips, getting stains out of laundry and a how-to on car repair thrown in for good measure.
I don't know about you, but Mom sure never told me how to recognize the symptoms of STD's, but it's in here, along with millions of other cool and useful things.

Perfect graduation present.......2007-05-29
This is a must have for high school graduates going off to college or moving away from home. We have given away a dozen copies since we gave our daughters a copy when they went off to college. Every one loved it and our girls still use theirs even though they are now married.
Where's Mom Now that I need her........2007-05-12
I wanted to purchase this book for my son who just finished his first year of college and will be in his own apartment at school next year. A friend had this book that was given to her 20 years ago. I love the updated version, and the fact that the book is in a 3 ring binder is great for adding your own ideas. I also purchased a copy for me and when my daughter goes off to college in 6 years I hope to purchase another one.
GREAT IDEA MOM.
A great book !!!.......2007-04-12
I bought this cookbook for my son, who is away at college and on his own. Not only does it have fast and easy recipes, (now that he is cooking himself...)but it also has grocery shopping tips, first aid, car and home repairs. I heard about this book from a friend and saw how many things it had for information for some one just getting to be on their own. A great reference book for any one!
Check it out. You will be glad you did.
Where's Mom...book review.......2007-01-05
This book is really great from all aspects...I like the helpful hints as well as the recipes...it all applies as we have our young people starting lives of their own out in the world of wonders.
I just happened to just give it to my son yesterday. He is in college several hours from home and moved into an apartment on his own. It was such a bonding moment when I handed it to him...what was his reply? "Mom...you really don't think you can be replaced by a book, do you?" Wow...what a profound moment! Well...as he's learning the lessons of life, this is an excellent resource tool for him to use. I plan on ordering three more for my daughters when they head out on their own as well!
Book Description
Two years ago author and horse trainer Linda Kohanov wrote The Tao of Equus — a daring multidisciplinary exploration of the powerful spiritual, emotional, and psychological connections between people and horses. Its provocative narrative, blending her story of prescient dreams and ancestral communication with a wide-ranging exploration of equine-facilitated therapy practices, created a worldwide demand for her workshops and lectures. She also received more than 1,000 letters from readers around the world describing their own strange and wonderful experiences with horses. In Riding Between the Worlds, Kohanov continues sharing the story of her own journey of healing and transformation and further develops the ideas introduced in The Tao of Equus, bolstering her groundbreaking theories with anecdotal evidence. Where her previous book laid the theoretical groundwork for expanding our emotional, mental, and spiritual view of horses, Riding Between the Worlds concentrates on the extraordinary stories that support this view.
Customer Reviews:
Riding Between Worlds.......2007-10-09
Though overall this book is too "new age" for my taste, I believe Ms. Kohanov probably does a tremendous amount of good pairing horses with people and solving inner or repressed emotional conflicts at her ranch in Tucson, and in the clinics she presents. I found the examples she sited very believable for both horse and person, and truly believe horses can heal emotional wounds. I very much agree "it is never JUST a horse!" Horses reveal our deepest secrets and conflicts, they sense these before we even can give them words. I liked, and I promptly employed, the technique of telling my horses things about my life that I believe make me similar to each one. The horse always listens, and the verbalization is good for both. This book adds understanding to our relationship with horses by making the reader more aware of what the horse "knows" or senses immediately about us, and thus makes us more open to the horse.
A Ride You Won't Forget.......2007-09-18
When I saw the beautiful cover of this book, and the intriguing title, I couldn't wait to read it. It promised mysteries and a wild ride into the unknown. Actually, the riding is transformative. The author overcomes a destructive marriage to find her way back to life through her interactions with some very wonderful, talented, compassionate and truly honest animals. A lifetime of fascination with, and interaction with horses leads her into an astonishing field of work, using members of her herd as therapy animals, in the treatment of trauma victims and people with emotional problems.
There is so much to this book that resonates, for anyone who has ever ridden a horse, or wanted to, or just enjoys watching them. Some of the stories are just inspirational. There is a wonderful section in which her beloved mare, Rasa, prematurely foals, and a community of helpers keep the young horse warm with body heat and take turns milking his dam so he can nurse. What a fantastic story.
Some of the horses are stories themselves. There's Noche, the abused horse, who is tender and kind with abuse victims. There is Merlin, a disturbed stallion, who finds love. There is Rasa, a powerful empath and spiritual guide.
I kept waiting for the book to turn New Age-y, but it's not preachy at all. This is one woman's journey that touches and heals. I won't look at horses the same way again.
Better than her first book.......2007-01-11
Linda's second book is easier to read and has more examples of horse-human interaction. I have recommended it even to my non-horsey friends. It has definitely changed my own approach to my equine friends.
A very important book for anyone who loves horses. Empath energy........2007-01-06
This book changed how I relate to my horse, even after a lifetime of being around horses. One of the best horse books I've ever read, yet it goes far beyond just relating to horses. Give this book to all your best friends.
Captivating.......2006-09-20
"Riding Between The Worlds" is an excellent account of the physical, spiritual, metaphysical and emotional connection between humans and horses. I found the metaphysical explanations to be the most helpful and know that I'll keep this book close to me as an inspiration and a reference guide.
Linda's writing style is understandable and captivating. She's able to succinctly put into words what so many other writers in her field have alluded -- yet been unable to describe. Linda's book is a great achievement -- the best book that I've read in the field of understanding horse - human relationships.

Book Description
Though the Bible and creeds have provided a compass for Christianity from earliest times, the frameworks of thought within which they have been understood have constantly changed, the contribution of Augustine to these changes being fundamental. This book traces, first, these changes chronologically and shows how they have led to the separation of religion and science, faith and reason, supernatural and natural, and so to current materialism: but also to radical alterations to our understanding of God and his relationship to the world. The second part shows in more detail how these changes have altered the significance of major features of Christian faith and led to serious incoherences. And the third part shows, not only how pre-Augustinian and Biblical understandings cohere closely with modern science, but that they have radical implications for our understanding of man, his place in nature and survival of death, for Jesus Christ and for the role of the Churches.

Not what I thought.......2005-09-29
I guess I expected a lot more famous names like Gilbert Rowland. This stuff ain't bad but a lot more researsh and better stock could of been included. What ever happened to Rita Moreno, you won't find her in this collection either. A purchase that I never should of made ...for the same price I could of got a good Lydia Mendosa CD!
Vivid Colors and Wild Designs.......2005-09-26
I do graphic work for a living. Having a book like this around helps the muse that visits my studio. I don't read the words. This is purely a picture book for me. And with that said - I really like it and use it for my job.
An Important and Thrilling Collection.......2005-09-07
This so much suits my personal tastes, blending my affinity for the style of art, the era, and my love of the cinema. The collection is a visual joy and a great history lesson. Delightful. Fascinating. Thrilling.
the art of "La Epoca de Oro".......2003-01-22
This dual-language book celebrates the wonderful posters that were made during the Golden Age of Mexican film (1936-1956), with depictions of some of its greatest stars, like the gorgeous Maria Felix pictured on the cover.
In the introduction by Charles Ramirez Berg, he states that "The main rationale for the book is preservation; to maintain the memory of movie posters", which were such a unique part of Mexico's superb cinematic history, and also to "acknowledge the artists, who often worked in obscurity".
Tragically, many posters (as well as films) were destroyed in a massive fire at the national film archive, the Cineteca National, in 1982. The 150 posters included in this book came from the Agrasanchez Film Archive in Harlingen, Texas, which houses a vast private collection of approximately 2,000 posters, as well as 1,400 Mexican films, and much more.
Included in this book is an extensive history of this period of Mexican film, a bibliography, and short bios of some of the artists, although a few posters are not credited, and some of the artists that are credited have no biographical material.
The heart of the book is the artwork, which is colorful, humorous, and dramatic. The women are extremely curvaceous (some scantily clad, and on two occasions with nothing at all), and many of the men, like Jorge Negrete in "El Fanfarron", looking dashing and "muy macho".
It is divided into categories: 1: Comedy, 2: Cabaret Girls, 3: Cowboys and Folklore, 4: History and Religion, 5: Drama, and 6: Mystery and Adventure.
My favorite is "Vuelven Los Garcia", by Juanino Renan Berenguer, with horses and riders in silhouette, against a magnificent sky, and two others painted by Juanino's brother Josep, "Cartas Marcadas" with Pedro Infante and Marga Lopez, and Libertad Lamarque in "Soledad"; both show portraiture with a hint of cubism, and are quite remarkable.
Also recommended is the lovely set of 40 postcards, selected from this book, in an attractive, sturdy gift box. the cards are on a matte finish stock, and the plates of this book have a semi-gloss finish. Both will be appreciated by fans of Mexican film, and anyone who enjoys popular art forms.
GREAT VISUAL BOOK.......2002-12-28
This is a great book to look at, especially if you are at all interested in art or el cine mexicano. I bought one for my family in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, and they enjoyed the nostalgia that the old movie posters brought back. The book divides different types of movie posters into different categories from Comedy to Monster-movies. The only thing that would have made this book better was if it had included more posters on Cantinflas and Clavillaso movies. Orale!

Who’s Gonna Take the Weight? by Kevin Powell leads us to the heart of the searing issues facing us today, from manhood, violence, and gender oppression to celebrity culture and hip-hop. Using compelling personal stories as the connecting thread, he examines what this nation has become since the monumental upheavals of the 1960s and where it might be headed if we’re not careful.
Written one hundred years after W.E.B. DuBois’s
The Souls of Black Folk and forty years after James Baldwin’s
The Fire Next Time,
Who’s Gonna Take the Weight? is an impassioned witness to the burning problems that have accompanied us on our journey through the twenty-first century.

Just okay.......2005-10-17
This was a fairly easy read, but lacked an instructional model for follow through. This was more of an autobiographical depiction of what race and manhood means to Kevin.
Well articulated, but...........2005-10-13
He's not saying anything that hasn't been said before, and better. Basically this is a well-written, seemingly powerful but ultimately shallow and heavy-handed piece of work by a writer with the sensibilities of a pimp. What I strangely find the most galling is his hypocritical attitude towards women, firstly, and the way he repeats phony white liberal feminist cant about "black patriarchy," which even he knows is just some crap that the media Establishment made up to make us look bad. Kevin Powell mistakenly believes that his account is some sort of official version of the Black American Experience. It isn't. Kevin Powell is Kevin Powell, a basically immature, confused young black kid(though he's older than me)who is incapable of telling his own story and glibly accepts the white liberal version(s) of it. Furthermore, he is obviously scared to dig a little deeper, beneath that phony New York crap, and really look at how this country operates--I guess it's because he isn't as disturbed about how this country operates as he lets on. He didn't have a damn thing to say about either Katrina or the Iraq War, which just goes to show. Had he truly been in James Baldwin's caliber, rest assured he would have gone on television kicking everybody's ass.
I gave it two stars for the quality of writing, NOT the content, which is basically just trash.
a joke.......2004-10-30
In the principal reviews of this book comparisons are made to W.E.B. DuBois, which are of course silly as DuBois was a serious thinker and writer (one greatly overshadowed by Frederick Douglass, but that's another subject altogether). You'll also see comparisons to such a luminary as Dyson, which, on the other hand, are appropriate as Dyson is an idiot with nothing to say. However, the least known fact about this book is that it was written by Powell's dog.
Admittedly, I exaggerate. I suspect that Powell himself actually did sit down and tap this out on his very own computer, or some such. But you do have to take it on faith, because there is no evidence whatsoever of a thinking person behind what amounts to a glut of words arranged to create the appearance of sentences, paragraphs, and thoughts. Indeed, the whole enterprise brings to mind the bit about the infinite monkeys, with infinite time, and War and Peace - oh, wait a minute - in that version, a real book comes out in the end. Here, well, let's just say that 2 or 3 monkeys with their respective typewriters for an hour or two will suffice.
It is not inconceivable that people exist who think this book has some redeeming value. After all, there are people who pay good money for scribblings drawn by elephants with paintbrushes in their trunks. Of course, now that I think about it, even those elephants are assisted by their trainers, so there's a human intelligence at work as well ... ok, well, the analogy's not perfect. The point is, if you're one of the 10 or 12 people who will get something from the book, whether appreciation of the pretty colors, or recollections of the author's time on MTV, well, have at it. Everybody else, hopefully, started investigating other reading material long before reaching the end of this review.
The truth .......2004-07-29
I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Powell at the Essence Music Festival this year, and made sure to let him know his book is the truth. It's not for everyone, meaning you have to be able to expand your mind and be willing to be objective. It's obvious he speaks and writes what he writes, because these are very important issues, and also uses himself in many instances to show he isn't merely just running his mouth and criticizing others. His concerns about where black men are and where we are headed are right on point and should be taken seriously.
and in other tupac news...kevin powell wrote another book.......2004-05-26
he loves tupac....he has serious issues with Black Women....its a hard knock life....he was on the real world.....vibe magaizine...? Who is Kevin Powell?
I've read many of his works, and this is the end of the road for me. My biggest issue with him, is that he lacks balance and if he couldgt past his hurt feelings/bruised ego long enough, I could give more credence to what he says. He's like the Gary Coleman of writing. Sure he makes some valid points, but I could do without the bitching. I'll give him this, he's a good editor. I enjoyed Step Into A World. (minus the introduction) Give me Greg Tate, Mark Anthony Neal, Todd Boyd anyday!!!!
