Book Description

A Spinal Tap for sports: the uproarious "autobiography" of Slo Mo Finsternick, 7'8" shooting guard and NBA sensation, by the author of the bestselling Missing Links--Sports Illustrated star columnist Rick Reilly

Seven-foot, eight-inch Maurice "Slo Mo" Finsternick knows nothing about the NBA while growing up in a bizarre cave-dwelling cult in Colorado. Shunned by his shorter peers, he spends lonely days at the cult compost heap tossing a found basketball through a wire hoop. He never misses. Through no fault of his own, he's discovered by the NBA and becomes the hottest sports icon in the country.

This is his story, told, like all jock autobiographies, in his own words. As this dead-on parody of big-time sports unfolds, Slo Mo gradually learns how a famous athlete is supposed to behave. Kind, truthful, polite, and self-effacing, at first Slo Mo is baffled by the attentions of Jacquanda "Jinx" Silver, the groupie with the world's worst condoms, and by the antics of teammates like Kinity "Death" Dedman, whose attempt at becoming the most outrageous and marketable NBA player is thwarted by the tattooist who thought "Ozzie" meant "Ozzie Nelson," not "Ozzy Osbourne." When the veterans on the team pull the old steal-the-uniform gag, Slo Mo warms up in the janitor's uniform left in its place, setting off a fashion craze on the streets.

Eventually, surrounded by an obligatory entourage of people he doesn't know, enticed into endorsing products he doesn't use, Slo Mo begins to lose his innocence, then his patented thirty-foot hook shot.

Nothing is sacred in this brilliant send-up of all that annoys in pro sports. Rick Reilly takes on shoe company vultures, egomaniacal athletes, Zen-spouting coaches, rapacious and corrupt recruiters, dumb-slob sportswriters, sleazeball agents, and mindless fans. Reilly shows again why he is the funniest, and best, sportswriter in America.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Coarse and absurd.......2006-07-05

There are two main themes in this book that are carried to absurd extremes. First, the main character, Slo-Mo, is a ridiculously naive boy/man. This is to the point of having a woman undress and want to sleep over... and Slo-Mo thinks she actually wants to sleep. The second theme is that NBA players are vulgar and immoral. While there is no doubt some truth to this, again it is carried to an extreme that goes beyond fiction.

I found it odd that Reilly wrote a book that is so over the top that it might appeal to more juvenile readers, yet is so coarse in its subject matter that makes it inappropriate for younger readers.

4 out of 5 stars Dark. but Funny.......2004-06-24

This is, especially in the beginning parts, a very funny book.
There are many "put it down and laugh out loud" statements.
It is clear that the author is very familiar with the NBA. I believe that sports fans will enjoy the book a lot. That said the plot of the story is just so weird. The main character, Slo-Mo, is extrememly naive, to the point of absurity. Also, the story turns kind of dark at the end. Overall, though, a fun read.

4 out of 5 stars Slow, no way!.......2004-06-24

This is the untrue autobiography of Slo Mo, a boy who grew up underground in a cave as part of a strict religious cult where he was not aloud to journey to or mix with the outside world. Being extremely tall meant he was really unsuited to cave life and the elders and other cult members didn't really want him around so he was often punished and spent his time shovelling human waste.

One day the septic pipes clogged up and the cult was forced to allow an outsider plumber in to repair them. Upon seeing the freakishly tall Slo the plumber handed him a basketball and wanted to see him dunk it. Having never seen one before Slo couldn't perform this task but hid the basketball from the man so he could play with it later to relieve boredom. He becomes a crack shot and when the plumber returns to fix the pipe again he knows he can make some serious cash off of Slo and since the cult doesn't really like Slo they have no problem with him going and playing basketball for a hefty commission on his payments.

Slo isn't that up to date with the world so this book is sort of a Forrest Gump joins the NBA type thing. His naivety is sometimes stretched beyond plausible limits in some cases but it does help the book flow along. You don't have to follow the NBA (I don't) to enjoy this great book. If you don't take it too seriously you'll really enjoy this light, fun read.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST NOVEL I HAVE EVER READ.......2002-11-07

THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC. I READ IT IN ONE DAY. I USUSALLY READ A BOOK IN ONE MONTH. EVEN NOW I PICK IT UP, OPEN TO A PAGE AND EVEN THOUGH I HAVE SEEN THAT PAGE A MILLION TIMES BEFORE, THE LAUGHS STILL COME. NEED A LAUGH? RIGHT HERE. ANY SPORTS FAN MUST HAVE THIS BOOK ON THEIR SHELF.

5 out of 5 stars Fiction in the real world.......2001-06-03

Reilly did it again. He wrote another article, or book in this case, that is unresistable to every reader, not just sports fans. He creates this naive basketball player in the NBA. It all seems real and he shows what's really wrong with the league and the society. A must for everyone.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-02-12

I've enjoyed the majority of the stories in this compilation. Granted, there have been a few that really didn't inspire much interest but others have stirred my interest in searching down that specific author's work to read more because I like the flow of words.

This is the first one I had gotten and as it interested me so much, I've gotten the most current edition to read.

    5 out of 5 stars strong anthology.......2003-08-12

As usual, this annual anthology serves up some of the best work, although this time around, the emphasi is more on orror than fantasy this year. The tales represent a wide panorama of the genres. Most of which are quite strong and a few are tremndous with one particular tale, "The Hunter's Wife," an incredible five star plus treat. Editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling also include their usual insightful analysis of the year. Especially interesting besides the obvious trend analysis that make for fascinating reading notably when compared to earlier editions of this tome is the recognition of comic books as a legitimate form of fantasy.

Overall this edition is a strong anthology that holds up against its illustrious history. Readers will enjoy savoring this collection over several weeks (this reviewer read 2-3 stories a night).

"The man who wears the names of rivers knows that he is no longer like other men, that some part of his fearful work has changed him forever and he can never return to the simple, painless life he lived before.... The invaders are everywhere, and Their agents are everywhere.... In [his] dreams They walk the streets without fear, spreading the androgyne contagion, and the sky burns with the roaring engines of Their warships."

In a novel about a serial killer, the evocation of the killer's madness can make or break the book. In The Crow: The Lazarus Heart, Poppy Z. Brite delivers her usual complement of gay/transsexual pale-faced lovelies dressed in black Lycra and lace, giving just enough of a spin to their aesthetics that they are mildly entertaining to read about. But the way she puts the good gory meat into the story is through the character of a mesmerizing serial killer whose unique brand of paranoia serves as a sly commentary on Brite's own fiction. This is a short and relatively simple novel for Brite, but its narrative momentum never lapses: the plot structure hangs together better than in her longer, more ambitious works. It's overwritten in places--Brite wants to use two similes where one will do--but it's fun. And that's what horror is all about. --Fiona Webster

    3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

A man is on death row. He didn't do what he has been convicted for, being the murder of his lover. Being a photographer of kinky stuff didn't really help his cause.

However, The Crow is lurking, and realises that there is a wrong to be avenged. When Jared comes back, the outfit and places they go will be right up his alley, though.

4 out of 5 stars Having a brain of my own..........2007-03-20

I read this book years ago. It may not be Poppy Z. Brite's best novel, but she had to work her magic within the confines of an already over used idea. She was able to bring a story to life even within these confines, and created something that was very moving, and extraordinary for a Crow novel. I feel that a number of times fans of a certain genre or of a certain author tend to let that get in the way of whether the book or novel had any value at all. Having been a fan of both, Poppy Z. Brite, and the Crow long before actually reading the novel, I was left amazed at the talent and the way that she did tell the story, staying true to the preformed idea, but making it her own. I don't feel that anyone really gives Ms. Brite enough credit for her writing, she is and always will be my favorite author simply because she is capable, versatile, and thinks outside of everyone else's box.

5 out of 5 stars New reader falling in love..........2005-04-12

Having never read another Crow novel, I cannot compare this to others as some reviewers have done. I can tell you that this book was excellent and actually pretty moving. I'm quickly becomming a fan of PZB's work.

2 out of 5 stars Better Then Quoth The Crow But Still Lacks.........2004-03-20

Yet again, another one of my reviews, this time for The Crow Lazarus Heart. Like Quoth The Crow, I enjoyed the love story although this one felt less forced and more natural. But as soon as Brite got to the villian,"Joseph Lethe", I felt very confused. Now, I can understand having a villian that thinks their justified but this one was just overall confusing. Talking about a lightning bolt that changes his brain? Not a very good reason/explanation. This book I also would not recommend to anyone. At this point, I'm already onto Clash By Night. On a general note, none of these books have attempted to "push the envelope". I will give Brite some credit for trying to add change to the story. And to the reviewer who made the note about the cop, well, I agree.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Poppy's Best.......2003-12-18

This is kind of cheesy. Parts of it are down right silly. This is the first of Miss Brite's work I read. (my mom brought it home for me when I was home sick..she's regretted it ever since) It's ok, it's an interested take of the whole Crow thing, (maybe I don't care for this because the subject's been overdone to death?)and I like her writing style. Her latter work is better though. (Exquisite Corpse, etc)

3 out of 5 stars Magnolia v. Buttercup -- I think Magnolia wins the book battle.......2007-05-30

So, most people who buy this cookbook are aware of the falling out between the owners of Magnolia Bakery -- that's how Buttercup came to be. Since Buttercup is essentially a spinoff of Magnolia, you might suspect that the recipes are similar. They are.

Certain recipes are identical. For example, the "Buttercup Golden Layer Cake" is the same as Magnolia's "Traditional Vanilla Birthday Cake". There are a few other examples. With the same heritage, it's inevitable that this type of thing would happen. To the reviewers who didn't bother to read the recipes, cupcakes are simply the cakes with the batter poured into cups.

So, the difference is in the other recipes. Buttercup tends to pick some really strange ones. Orange Marble Pound Cake anyone? There are a lot of "white cakes" -- cakes without egg yolks. White cakes are definitely not for the beginner because they require a little more of a delicate touch than the "mix and bake" of a Duncan Hines box. Also, a lot of recipes call for cake flour, an ingredient that may not be familiar to a lot of beginners. The Milk Chocolate Layer Cake sounds good, but like many of the cakes in this book, the flavoring is really subtle and disappointing. Same goes with the Red Velvet Cake.

In contrast, the cakes in Magnolia are very straightforward and usually require ordinary ingredients and preparation. And they're much more flavorful. They're simpler and faster. And in my opinion, they're more useful recipes. I can't think of a time when I would want to make a "Fireside Orange Cake with Brandy Glaze" from Buttercup's instead of a "Chocolate Buttermilk Layer Cake" from Magnolia's.

Which is a shame, because Buttercup is the superior bakery when it comes time to compare the two bakeries in person.

But this isn't to say the Buttercup book is bad. The recipes here are decent. They always turn out, and they do taste like what you get in the store. But for my money, I'd just stick with the Magnolia Cookbook.

3 out of 5 stars Where are the cupcakes?.......2007-03-21

I should have read the other reviews when I bought this -- I did specifically buy it because I'd been to the Buttercup Bakery and loved their cupcakes and wanted to make them. There are some cake recipes and some frosting recipes, and I expect I'll be able to cobble together something yummy that I can bake in a cupcake wrapper (though for how long, not too sure...and I hate guessing). The recipes sound lovely, in any case.

But really, guys, if you put cupcakes on the cover, people are going to expect cupcakes inside.

[I write knitting books and if I put a sweater on the cover of one of my books without putting the pattern in the same book, I'd never hear the end of it. :-)]

Ok, so is anyone else dissappointed that Buttercup Bake Shop is known and famous for their cupcakes and there aren't any in this book? Recipes are fine but they sell you on the cupcakes on the cover. Not the best baking book ever either and I really would be qualified to know as I have a baking business.

          Book Description

Dog Language tells us why dogs do what they do and how we can express ourselves so that our dogs can understand us better. It is a systematic book, ordered alphabetically with 293 entries and 94 beautiful drawings illustrating over 150 different dog expressions.

First published in Scandinavia in 1986 as Hundesprog', this book became a great success and has since then helped many thousands of dog owners, instructors, behavior students, and veterinarians to understand dogs. Now available in English, the present edition of Dog Language is an updated, highly revised and enlarged version of the original Hundesprog'.

Following the traditions of the school of ethology founded by Konrad Lorenz, Dog Language is based on many hours of research, observation, and study. Dog Language is a no-nonsense book, written in a modern, uncomplicated style—a book for all readers with interest in dogs, wolves and other canids.

`Dog Language is a book that will benefit anyone interested in what makes our dogs tick. It is a must for the professional dog handler or behaviorist, as well as any pet owner. Dog Language is well organized and written in a clear, easily understood manner. The beautiful illustrations help to explain what our canine companions are trying to communicate to us and each other. This is a rare opportunity to tap into the talent and expertise of a well known canine ethologist.' Sandy Myers (President of Narnia Pet Behavior, member of the APDT and NADOI)

`If we are to understand the domestic dog's natural behavior, we must appreciate his social heritage and the adaptive significance of his many complex behavior patterns. Roger Abrantes' book Dog Language provides this knowledge, and presents it in an easy to use and understand format. This encyclopedia of canine behavior is absolutely a must for all serious students of canine behavior and training!' Linda P. 3 out of 5 stars Canine behavior encyclopedia.......2007-08-24

A highly technical, behaviorist slanted, wordy A-Z book of behaviors. A dull read which necessitates extraction for application in dog training. Not exactly what I thought it would be - but none the less a good reference book.

          1 out of 5 stars Not Satisfied.......2007-08-20

This was not at all what I thought it would be based on the description, etc. on Amazon and I was very disappointed.

          5 out of 5 stars Lanny North.......2007-05-07

Excellent book for all two-leggeds. The format is encylopedic, but what seems intuitively to be a fault is really a plus. The book has become close to number one on my shelf of books directed at learning dog. Short of growing a tail, this book will yield rewards in enriched relationships with the four-leggeds.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Fostering.......2007-01-25

We are now fostering and I was curious what the dog was telling us. This is an excellent book on letting you figure out what the heck your saying.

4 out of 5 stars Dog Language: An Encyclopedia of Canine Behavior.......2007-01-12

A welcome addition to over forty books in my canine reference library.I found "Dog Language" to be a handy reference in encyclopedic format listing terms and definitions used in the study of canine ethology. Especially useful is the list of canine behavior references located in the bibliography. The cross-reference line following each entry provides extra information. As a people trainer, I found it useful for defining the buzzwords of dogspeak needed to convey concepts to dog owners. Human to Canine communication is the key element to success in training. Dog Language helps to explain the messages the dog sends us. As an active trainer of working German Shepherd Dogs, I believe this book has enhanced my ability to "read" dogs.

          Book Description

A virtual treasury, this book has more than 1,670 still banks beautifully presented in color and many more black and white illustrations. Focusing on American and English banks, there are many lovely examples of still banks from other countries as well, all rated in terms of their scarcity. Pages from manufacturer's catalogues are reproduced, and the text relates the histories of the manufacturers, specific details about the banks, and information for collectors about clubs and publications where more information can be obtained. The Moores also include a series of conversion tables which correlate the numbering system used in his book with that of all the other major works on still banks. The Penny Bank Book makes its predecessors obsolete. No enthusiast should be without this entertaining, magnificently organized masterwork.

Great book for the collector. Better than the earlier editions in that it has the prices listed with the pictures instead of in the back of the book.
Still the same banks that were in the earlier editions though.

The Penny Bank Book is a pictorial and value guide to collecting banks. Containing both good pictures and approximate values, it is the most comprehensive bank collecting book available at this time. It is a must for any serious collector. This is the guide I keep in my car to advise me.

                  Book Description

James McNeill Whistler was a leading figure in the revival of lithography in the late 19th century. His lithographs focus upon scenes and themes earlier explored in his paintings, etchings, and pastels. Using transfer paper, he created the effects of drawing, and with a few lines was able to convey a total picture. Working with the London printer Thomas Way and his son T. R. Way, Whistler initially hoped the lithographs would bring him a mass audience and financial security; later he hoped connoisseurs would collect his quiet, understated images as precious objects of enduring value.

Steven Block began assembling his important collection in the late 1970s. It includes early experiments, portraits of friends and family, studio models, shop and street scenes, and sketches of the Thames and its bridges.

                  Book Description

Coach Clarence "Big House" Gaines spent 47 years as coach and athletic director at Winston-Salem State University. As such, he became the fifth-winningest coach in NCAA basketball history (behind Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Bobby Knight, and Jim Phelan of Mount St. Mary's College) and the winningest African-American coach. In this book, Gaines concentrates on what was happening socially in the country during his tenure, as well as offering behind-the-scenes details about his many victories.

                  5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2004-09-05

Big House was a great coach - the fifth best in history of college basketball but more importantly he was a guy with a sense of values and a good sense of humor. He knows basketball as well as anyone in the country and has some candid comments about how to improve the game. But his real commitment was to the students he coached. He experienced the bitter bite of segregation - working for an HBCU called Winston Salem State - but his memoir is better than a rant - it is a reflection of his insight and integrity.
