Book Description
A virtuosic performance by one of "our most venturesome metafictional fabulists" (The New York Times Book Review), The Adventures of Lucky Pierre is the culmination of a project Coover has been working on for more than a quarter of a century. It is a tour de force that confirms why Coover is one of our preeminent writers. The place is Cinecity, the frozen meta-city where Lucky Pierre plies his trade. Part porn star, part clown, Pierre is quite literally defined by his films. Following the city motto -- Pro bono pubis -- each of Pierre's nine muse-directors creates her own sexual galaxy with Pierre the star of her show. Pierre becomes a naive castaway, a naughty little boy, a submissive slave, a lovestruck hubby, a sexual outlaw, a dirty cartoon, a sex machine, and more. But what will happen when the film ends? A sparkling meditation on how both sex and stories compel and invent us -- in both magical and violent ways -- The Adventures of Lucky Pierre is a masterpiece from one of America's best writers. "Of all the postmodernist writers, Robert Coover is probably the funniest and most malicious." -- Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times "The supreme chronicler of the unreality of American life." -- Carey Harrison, San Francisco Chronicle "Coover couldn't write a dull note to the milkman." -- John Schulian, Los Angeles Times Book Review

Perre gets lucky and nine again..........2004-08-25
Think of the infinite cycle of revenge initiated by Fellini's 8 and a half. Yes, the dream sequence! No, not the first one, the other later on when he is living in perfect harmony with all the 8 maybe 9 women of his dreams... Broadway still sings about it! Peter Greenway tried to re-movie it HIS way... Coover's way WAY outdoes them all proving that he is firmly transmodern, transcinematic, pantronic, pornoclastic, iconomorphic! Check the references. Go to imdb.com . Verify that Coover found Lucky Pierre in
Herschell Gordon Lewis 1961 forgotten naive exploit of the same name which no one cared to see or comment on. Brought Pierre out of retirement to protagonize as only he could, the brunt of feminist deconstructive romp in this newly meta-Tarrantinized nitemare of romp and stomp, this de-Ramboesque purge so telling of the times.
It is Felini lionised! It is Mastroiani finally "Slavroinized"! It is the all-consumming, selfcom-summing, sum total of all male fears penned with the supreme mastery of the pen-is-my-pained-penis only Coover commands. This is a brilliant work, in more ways than anyone can find or fathom. A slap o mastery that one can only hope, has the infinity of sequels it deserves and engenders in the mind! If you have not read it yet and you are not reading it now, what the hell are you waiting for?

A Lesser, but Worthwhile, Effort.......2007-08-06
This piece is a companion to THE PHILOSPHICAL STRANGLER. It is a sequel in that it was written after the original but the story line takes place before that of the original book. It is also a collaboration and differences can be seen.
The biggest difference to me was the higher level of buffoonery. The characters seem less intelligent than in the original as they wander their way through this magical universe.
The wandering in this story is on the part of two principal characters. One is the mage who was called in to interpret the dream of a king. The king goes mad right after hearing what the mage has to say and said mage embarks on a quest to find out who is trying to thwart him.
The second wanderer is the artist, Benvenuti, from the original book. Since he was supposed to be hired by the mad king, he now has nothing better to do than wander around looking for the wizard who drove his patron mad. Eventually the two link up and set off on a greater quest.
This story is not as interesting as the original nor are the characters as likeable. Still, it is an enjoyable read and well worth the time.
Strange but true.......2006-12-05
Like one reviewer mentioned below, this book is not for the squeamish. My friend and I got a kick out of it and we are both die-hard fantasy lovers (and not very old, either.) However, those to whom Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Princess Bride do not appeal completely may wish to avoid this book.
That being said, this book contains what every good book does: truth. A whole lot of it. Without spoiling anything, the lunatic's advice to Benvenuti in the last line? "Things change." How often does our modern society wish that things didn't change and get washed over by it?
Along the same lines, verbosity is the bane of many readers, and yet the writers go at length to use it (so effectively, I think) to parody the notion itself.
In store for dedicated readers are an uproarious Civil War (in the Dog House,a super-"socialist" city), the completely crazy wizard, and the very human and sane lunatic. (Don't ask me how they did it: the lunatic, Wolfgang, has better insight into the world than most so-called philosophical books do.)
Great, great fun. My friend and I still stage Civil Wars every now and again. (We actually invented a form of government where every other state in the nation controls every state's affairs but its own, inspired by Forward the Mage)
This is the book that got me to really love Flint.......2006-08-07
I actually read this before I read "The Philosophical Strangler," and I liked it more. This was probably the book that got me to realize I should start collecting Flint books.
This was also the book that had me laughing out loud in the library. And again. And again. Perhaps it's because I have the background to appreciate it, as another reviewer mentioned, but the points of view are remarkably well done throughout the whole book and the various historical, social, etc references hilarious in context.
I firmly believe that if you are a big fan of dry humor, meta-humor, and absurdist humor, this will be one of your favorite books.
Pretentious , tries too hard to be funny.......2006-04-18
Boring tripe. Tries much too hard to be ‘cute’.
Plot is non existent. Characters are much too
thin to be even one dimensional. You can
read this piece of c**p free online at BAEN
and that’s too much of a price to pay. AVOID
this at all costs. Read:
“The Compleat Enchanter:
The Magical Misadventures of Harold Shea”
by L. Sprague de Camp, Fletcher Pratt
Tales of the Dying Earth by Jack Vance
Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat by Ernest Bramah
The Worm Ouroboros: A Romance by E. R. Eddison
Satire with substance.......2005-06-08
This book will prove difficult or boring for many people, partly due to the vocabulary and partly due to the scope of background knowledge necessary to really enjoy it. The book parodies not only the prose of eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as with the page-long sentence on the evils of verbosity) but also the political and philosophical movements of the time. Throw-away references to experimental physics, ecclesiastical history, etc. will probably lose everyone at some point. I'm sure I missed some (or a lot) of the jokes. As well, the authors are overly faithful to the voice of their narrators. If you don't have the background to catch the (often subtle) barbs, many passages will read as unleavened pedantry.
In spite of that, I recommend this book for those with patience. Not as comedy, exactly - though it has hilarious moments, they're not that frequent. Instead, I'd place it more in the hazy area of the Princess Bride - a story superficially impossible to take seriously, but ultimately very serious indeed. Beneath the antics, there's a real message about human nature. The characters may be literally larger than life, but they are complex and compelling.
Having a large vocabulary or a willingness to expand it rapidly will help. So will knowing something about nationalism and imperialism.

Book for handling blind dogs.......2007-10-10
This book is very helpful for me in training my blind Pekingese. I've gotten several good ideas from it.
Most practical, encouraging help available to owners of blind dogs.......2007-07-21
My sweet Basset Hound Wilma developed glaucoma causing immediate blindness in one eye with the possibility of blindness in the other eye at some point. This book is full of encouragment that blind dogs can lead happy lives and really "normal" lives. It has pages and pages of practical things to do to help your dog. It is also a great resource for someone like me with a dog partially blind or beginning to lose their vision because there is a very helpful information on preparing your dog for blindness. I had felt so sad and hopeless about my dog's future until I got this book. A MUST HAVE BOOK for anyone dealing with their dog and blindness.
Very helpful..........2007-05-14
I am the owner of a 6 yr old rottweiler who has been diabetic since 2005 and has recently developed cataracts due to her illness. This book has been extremely informative to me as I assist my dog to adjusting to life without sight. It helped me to understand that with a little patience and guidance, my dog can still enjoy a quality life. Since this is probably a one-of-a-kind book, it is an invaluable source for owners of blind dogs. I highly recommend it.
Very helpul & informative.......2007-04-04
I had been approached about adopting a blind puppy. I purchased this book to figure out if I would be up for the task of dealing with a blind puppy. I found this book to be very helpful & informative. I did adopt the puppy & I was able to have the house ready for her to negotiate & map out by following the book's suggestions.
Excellant resource!!!!!.......2007-03-18
This book helped me deal with what was a very difficult transition when my dog lost his eyesight late in life!

Book Description
For over a century the majority of Americas major sculptors chose one particular foundry to cast their works in bronze. That foundry was the Roman Bronze Works and its castings (and often the initials R.B.W.) represent a vast and fascinating collection of sculptures, ranging from the monuments of French and Saint-Gaudens to the cowboys of Remington and Russell, from the grand and graceful figures of Paul Manship and the charming salon pieces of Bessie Potter Vonnoh, to the brilliant abstractions of Archipenko and Calder. To study the ledgers and archival photographs of Roman Bronze Works is to see the unfolding of American sculpture through the 20th century, for here are examples from the many schools and isms that locked the nations art world in titanic battles between realism and modernism and the many significant styles in between. Over 700 photographic examples (many in color) and biographical information about over 120 sculptors make up this book, the first to examine R.B.W.s role in American art.

A Century of American Sculpture: The Roman Bronze Works.......2002-07-17
Interested in American bronze sculpture? Well, look elsewhere. This book will only serve to frustrate collectors, dealers, scholars with a serious interest in a field which has only recently received serious attention. The book starts off well enough with a brief, though undocumented, history of this important American bronze foundry. However, the bulk of the book is devoted to a picture album of sculptures supposedly produced by the firm by about one hundred sculptors. Each sculptor is given a brief biographical summary accompanied by a page or two of reproductions. That would be useful but, in typical Schiffer indifference to reproduction quality, the photos are often grainy and/or blurry. Furthermore, not one piece is identified with its dimensions. In fact, you will find no useful documentation of the pieces exhibited. There is not one foundry mark used by Roman Bronze Works reproduced in this book. This is a fatal flaw since collectors are hungry for such information to identify and authenticate works. There is a need for serious scholarship on American bronze foundries, but unfortunately this book does not fill the bill.
Product Description
Once you have finished putting all your personal vision and hours of labor into creating a great photograph or digital image (or watercolor, drawing, painting, needlepoint or any other work of art), you need to mat it and possibly frame it for your wall, your client or as part of your portfolio. Clear, straightforward color photographs and step-by-step instructions guide even the novice through introductory and advanced techniques. Topics covered are accurate measuring various mounting techniques including wet, dry and conservation mat cutting by hand and tabletop cutters single and multiple window matting glazing with various glasses and plexiglass framing with metal and wood frames and hanging your artwork including single, multiple and heavy works, as well as exhibition tips.
Amazon.com
Since the cost of framing often exceeds the price of the artwork itself, it pays to know how to do it yourself. This book offers thorough background on all the basics--measuring, mounting, matting, glazing materials, and frames--for both archival and non-archival techniques. Even if you're not ready to invest in specialty tools like a mat cutter or miter box, you'll find useful instructions on working with ready-made frames using simple tools (a ruler and utility knife). In addition to coverage of traditional artwork, directions are provided for specialty items, such as tiles and needlework, and for incorporating slightly dimensional items on the mat to accent the framed piece.
Book Description
A homemade frame is better than a store-bought one for expressing the owner’s personal taste. It’s also far less expensive. This fully illustrated, hands-on guide—now revised and expanded—features easy-to-follow diagrams throughout and expert tips on selecting the best frame for the picture, from ornate elegance to beautiful simplicity. It covers all you’ll need to get started: preparing the artwork, mounting and basic construction techniques, decorative trims and moldings, and eye-catching finishes. And the fun continues with ideas for making fancy cuts of wood and other materials, and money-saving tips for renovating old frames, and repairing family heirlooms.
Customer Reviews:
Picture Framing Made Difficult.......2003-06-09
This is not a book for the person who wants to save a little money. It is written for the fanatic who wants to know how to do everything.
To be fair I did pick up some useful information on restoring old prints and frames. But it all seems a lot more complicated than I want to do. The terminology is British and I have a feeling that some of the materials are not known by the same nomenclature in the USA.
Maybe i'm just looking for a simpler book.
Lacking in details.......2002-03-05
This book is often lacking in details and does not fully illustrate all concepts. For example, it mentions the paper hinge method for mounting a picture to the mount board. However, it does not provide enough detail for an amateur like myself to implement this technique. The techniques all use very cude handtools, and the author does not even mention the tools a professional might use. I'm sure it is possible to use the information in the book to make quality looking frames, but using these tools, it sure will take a struggle of an effort
Framing really is easy.......1997-09-02
I am a water color painter and I have framed my own work, but it usually looked more lynched than hung. So, when I saw Penelope Stoke's book, PICTURE FRAMING MADE EASY, I muttered, "yeah, right." Well, I read the book and realize the key to framing is having the proper equipment and a place to use said equipment. PICTURE FRAMING MADE EASY shows in detail each tool and tack and tells how to use the equipment effectively. I must admit, her book helps make framing easier, and the finished project really can look professional when done at home. Using her step-by-step instructions you can frame your own art, heirlooms, butterly collection, whatever you choose to frame! I highly recommend it

Forgotten Memories.......2004-07-16
Voice of Youth Advocates Magazine October 2002 VOYA
Growing up in San Jose, California, Arturo Rodriguez and his brothers and sister endured an abusive father, their parents' unhappy marriage, and their father's absence after he returned to Mexico. Rodriguez coped as best he could, but his drinking and drug use, in the wrong place at the wrong times led to his incarceration in California's prison system for young offenders. Against all odds, he put his past behind him, married and had a family, and worked hard to overcome injustices and start a successful business. After his retirement Rodriguez began writing about his life and his family. This book is sequel to East Side Dreams (Dream House, 2001, published in Spanish as Sueños del Lado Este. In this second autobiographical book, he writes about childhood pranks and misdeeds, his mother's near fatal illness, his parent's divorce, the birth of his first child, and how his parents even eventually became friends.
The writing here is unpolished but sincere in true, and the reminiscences and descriptions are vivid and true to life. Neither how he grew to understand his father and other relatives whom he loved despite their flaws. His message for young readers is clear. It is possible to survived and overcome injustices and hardships. Rodriguez maintains a Web site at www EastSideDreams. com and invites readers to visit, view his picture alum, and perhaps send him an e-message. He will answer.-Sherry York Voice of Youth Advocates Magazine

Forgotten Memories
Art Rodriguez
Dream House Press
Capably written for teenage readers grades 7 through 11 by Art Rodriguez, Forgotten Memories is the story of his having been a young man growing up amid difficult conflicts in San Jose, California. From life-threatening risks such as drowning and knife fights, to the cutting harshness of vituperative words, Forgotten Memories reflects the drama of learning how to survive, grow, and accept personal responsibility. Forgotten Memories is recommended as a powerful coming of age story. Also highly recommended is the Art Rodriguez previous memoir, East Side Dreams.
