Book Description
Much has been said and written about the Bible—but not everything has been accurate. Bestselling author Stephen Lang (more than 1.7 million books sold and author of The Complete Book of Bible Trivia) has gathered misquotes, misconceptions, misuses, and more that have touched people’s funny bones or made them groan in disbelief. In this fun collection, readers will be intrigued by “errors” that include:
- In 1852 a “cleaned–up” version of the Bible was published by a vegetarian. All references to violence, sex, and meat were taken out.
- The image of angels with harps doesn’t appear in the Bible. It probably originated from John Milton’s poem Paradise Lost.
- Fidel Castro announced that “Christ chose the fishermen because he was a communist.”
As readers are entertained by these fascinating facts, they’ll discover many biblical truths and learn some of Christianity’s history.

Some interesting facts about the Bible and Bible Translations.......2007-09-11
This is a rather variable book with a couple of fascinating chapters, including different heresies, sects and cults and translation and printing errors but with other rather dull sections with strange things that students, celebrities and pop culture think about the Bible. The title suggests this book contains funny items but there aren't many of those, it's a general look at the way in which people have misread the Bible or chosen to amend it. The author makes some rather strange generalisations at times and his particular theological and doctrinal standpoint is always portrayed as absolute truth (and people with other views are often shown as wrong or heretical, particularly Roman Catholics) and his anti-communist sentiments seem decades out of date, but the book is worth reading for the good chapters and there were some interest new insights into Christianity and Bible translation through the ages.

Book Description
An entire suburban household comes of age simultaneously in this tender, funny first novel of growing children and their arrested-adolescent parents. Perceptively capturing both the warmth and the frictions within a memorably eccentric family, author Jim Gladstone debuts with a work of great humor, heart, and psychological insight.
THE BIG BOOK OF MISUNDERSTANDING is a refreshingly candid novel that combines the emotional depth of Sue Miller with the comic verve of Stephen MacCauley. The story opens as Joshua Royalton - 22-years-old, gay, and an aspiring children's book writer - contemplates suicide and asks himself:
"Do I have to end my life to end my childhood?"
To come up with an answer, Josh leads readers on a tumultuous jaunt through his family history. The Royaltons, Josh explains, are "like Norman Rockwell run amok, so wholesome it's perverse." Dad refuses to wake up from his dream of an Ozzie and Harriet family life. Mom searches for freedom in psychology books. Brother Lew takes refuge in clandestine romance and rebellious isolation.
Recounting his youth, Josh reveals the elaborate tales, theories and neuroses he developed to cope with the overbearing affection of his parents. These include a fictional history of tacky Chinese restaurant decor, a severe case of crow-phobia, an obsession with Carly Simon, an extreme aversion to jigsaw puzzles, and a deep fascination with the little known Basque-sport, jai alai.Above all else, there is Josh's enduring devotion to his late grandfather, a man who bore little resemblance to the hero Josh makes of him.
Josh struggles to figure out how to be both a part of his family and apart from his family, wrestling with his burgeoning sexuality, his artistic inclinations, and a sometimes crippling inability to be less than empathetic with those around him.
Rendering the feverish - and often hilarious - imagination of a troubled youngster's mind with pitch-perfect accuracy, Jim Gladstone takes readers on a wild ride through pop cultural touchstones of the 1970s and 1980s while maintaining a sense of emotional intimacy that will keep readers highly invested in the developing lives of the Royalton family.
THE BIG BOOK OF MISUNDERSTANDING is about finding ways to laugh when life is at its most trying. It's about the deep bonds between fathers and sons - and between brothers. It's about a strong, evolving mother and a brilliant teenage girl whose insights and desires for independence lead them to force distance between themselves and the men they truly care about.
Most of all, it's about people who insist on figuring out how to love each other despite their differences - and despite the indelible similarities they sometimes wish they didn't share.
Jim Gladstone proves that the darkly ironic eye and the deeply affectionate heart are not mutually exclusive writerly terrains in his impressively accomplished debut novel. Written with sharp wit and emotional subtlety, THE BIG BOOK OF MISUNDERSTANDING delivers quirky surprises at every turn.
Customer Reviews:
Confused young man comes to terms with his inclinations.......2007-09-04
This is the story of the Royalton family, related by Josh Royalton who, at the age of 22, looks back over his life to date, contemplating whether or not he can continue; recounting the many events that have led to this situation.
It is a most enjoyable book, funny, sad, with very likeable and real characters. The dominating, ambitious, insensitive but loving father; the cynical brother; the restless mother; we have probably meet people like them. And then Josh himself, a most appealing individual, who as he matures gradually comes to recognise and accept his feelings for other men.
There is no great plot to talk of, but that is part of its charm, for it is beautifully written, and one can truly enjoy the experience.
Not as good as you've been led to believe.......2005-10-21
Certainly this story of the Royalton family and son Joshua is not a bad novel: the real crime is how great it could have been. Teasing you with son Joshua asking, "Do I have to end my life to end my childhood?" you later wonder what all the angst is about. By the end of the book, why did he feel suicidal at all? It certainly wasn't the coming-out process; that was relatively easy and quick in this story.
The central problem is that the writer wanted this story to be about a young gay man's desire to separate from the terrible environment of his upbringing. Trouble is, his childhood is pretty good. The supposed bad guy, his father, is not bad at all, and his mother has her own trials but they are fairly mild.
This is more of a chronicle of a boy's life and his family than it is a "gay" novel. In fact, readers will be disappointed at the number of pages devoted to Joshua's rather benign upbringing. The plot doesn't get started till nearly the middle of the book so that we can see various (many of them unnecessary) childhood scenes, equipped with frequent "remember that" sort of name-droppings of TV shows, fad toys and brand names. I don't need an author to goose me onto memory lane; it's more effective to organically weave the environment and era into a story.
There were a few problems with dialogue. Sometimes the children spoke too adult-like, and toward the end of the book, Joshua and his father sound like therapists talking to each other. And there's that main problem that nags the reader throughout the book: what's Joshua's problem? A similar, but much more realistic and believable story is "The World of Normal Boys" by K.M. Soehnlein.
My suggestion is to watch for future works by Jim Gladstone, because he is a good writer. The trouble here: he didn't have an editor.
Looking for all the pieces of the puzzle - and finding them!.......2004-03-19
I loved reading THE BIG BOOK OF MISUNDERSTANDING! There it is, out in the open, and writing a critique of Jim Gladstone's first novel is colored by that sort of passion for writing that happens all too infrequently. Gladstone writes with an elegant wit and grace and obviously fell hopelessly in love with all his varied characters of this absorbing novel.
The book opens with what appears to be a suicide decision on the part of our 22-year-old hero Joshua Royalton only to recede immediately into the formative years of this lad and his inimitable family. Gladstone constructs a 1970s family that is headed by Harris Royalton the lawyer father who is obsessed with happiness, and 'inappropriately sensual' with his wife Becca, who weathers the slings of family secrets and misadventures and eventually becomes a psychologist, Joshua our latent closeted gay hero, and his brother Lewis, the athlete and macho man who tolerates the happy-wappy family far less than Joshua. The "Misunderstandings" are sprinkled throughout the progression from childhood glow to teenage angst and we are audience to the disintegration of this Philadelphia family unit which molds the now and future lives of everyone oconcerned. Lewis flees to California's hippy scene, Becca puts all the lunacy into finding her psychologist chair, Joshua tries love with a girl and eventually uncaps his true sexuality and dreams of writing. Only Harris, the softly lovable but deluded 'perfect father' remains on homebase and the 22-year-old Joshua breathes submission then denial to the phrase "You can't go home again." To say more than that would be to deprive you of the tangible joys of turning the pages and falling into the lure of Gladstone's characters. His style of writing is infectious: "Riding the currents of Melville's ocean late into the night, I felt waves of meaning come crashing down. Submerged messages floated to the surface, eddying through my mind. In quicksilver words flashing round a whirlpool, I glimpsed reflections truer and more elusive than mirrors had ever offered. At two in the morning I laughed, exhausted, my pages and my figertips all solid, screaming pink. Having tried to highlight every significant detail, I had drenched the entire story in phosphorescent ink." And when it comes to describing carnal senses, Gladstone is able with a very few words to completely paint the bizarre world of sexuality.
This is a coming of age and awareness of a young gay man, but this is much more than that. This BIG BOOK OF MISUNDERSTANDING is one of the finest dissections of American family life, presented on the prosector's table with love, style and tender wisdom. Turning the last page made me return to the opening page and start reading all over again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for everyone.
Insightful Family Drama -- Amazing Character Psychology.......2003-06-24
It's remarkable how this book places the reader directly into the mind of the narrator, Josh. Reading it is like seeing a complicated situation through someone else's eyes; I don't know that, in the same scenarios, I would have interpreted things or been impacted by them in the same way that Josh is, but this novel set me in his shoes with astonishing effectiveness. The relationships between the members of the Royalton family are rendered with the sort of humor and carefully nuanced emotion that made them feel as real as my own family. There seems to be a lot of focus in other reader-reviews about this being a "gay novel". I don't get it. This is just a terrific, engrossing family story, along the lines of books by Jane Hamilton, Michael Chabon, and Pat Conroy (Though much less melodramatic than Conroy!). A real small-press gem.
The Big Book Of Misunderstanding.......2003-01-25
The magic of literature, when it touches you in some inexplicable way, is exemplified in Jim Gladstone's The Big Book of Misunderstanding. The subtle nuances of family and childhood issues are evoked in the way a scent can revive one's own memories. This book is a sweet, touching memoir that many of our generation can relate to, regardless of their life's path. I highly recommend this as a great read for any audience.

Lost Dragons Of Barakhai is the second volume of 'Books of Barakhai', continuing the story of a land peopled by shapeshifters who spend half their lives as human and half as animals. A boy who has faced the death penalty for a mistake finds himself unexpected aligned with the opposition as he returns to a fantasy world to further aid its rebel cause. Conflict and confrontation evolve in this fast-paced fantasy.
superb adult fairy tale.......2002-08-18
A year and a half ago, graduate student Ben Collins followed a rat into a storeroom and wound up in the Kingdom of Barakhai. In that land, all humans except the Royal Family were cursed, forced to shape shift into other bodies for half the day or night. When Ben left that world for his own, he was badly injured and needed medical treatment. Now Zylas the white rat says Barakhai needs him once more. Ben feels like Barakhai is home and Earth is just the orphanage where he was raised so he must act.
There are two young dragons held prisoner by the king and they have the power to remove the curse that force the humans to shift into another form. Zylas and Ben concoct a dangerous plan that includes using an old enemy who has the king's ear.
THE LOST DRAGONS OF BARAKHAI is an adult fairy tale with a handsome hero (make that bumbling grad student), a fair maiden (who spends half her life as a fair horse) and a rebel leader (who remains human even when he turns into a rat). Mickey Zucker Reichert is a fantastic storyteller who provides fantasy readers with some of the better tales.

Fred Halpern was the first boy to the moon..........2004-05-11
but the fact is, while he might be able to figure vectors and orbits in his head, he just can't seem to follow orders or stay out of trouble. Also accidents seem to happen around him no matter how much or how hard he tries to do his best.
So when a spaceship crashed on the moon, Fred found himself in a trap. The people at the base had been given the ship's general location via the space station. He KNEW the info was wrong and he also knew where the ship was, but the Moon base only had so many tractors or men to search with and they couldn't mess this up the first time. They didn't have the time!
Now Fred had two ways to handle this. He could obey orders and let two men die. Or he could go out on his own and maybe save the two men by disobeying a direct order.

Wonderful intro to a favorite cuisine.......2007-08-11
Every time I walk past an Indian restaurant, sometimes even downwind of one, my mouth waters. I get almost the same experience from these lucious pictures. If you cook with your eyes, you'll love this book.
Despite the incredible complexity of Indian flavors, every-day cooking is very approachable. This gives a wide sampling of favorite dishes, both vegetarian and meat-based. In addition to main dishes of many sorts, this covers the soups, raitas, breads, pickles, deserts, and beverages that complete the experience.
There are more encyclopedic Indian cookbooks around including Classic Indian Cooking, as well as books that pay more attention to regional differences. This makes a great book for the beginner, though, with its clear directions, variations on each recipe, and emphasis on accessible ingredients. If you cook for fun and a little dinner-time adventure, you'll find a lot to enjoy in this book.

Easy Book; Great Results.......2007-02-28
I have been using this cookbook for over a year now and, like most reviewers, I can't recommend it enough. You'll have to pardon me if I write a long review...I think I enjoy writing about this food as much as I do cooking and eating it...
I'll comment on some of the specific dishes below but, first, I'll say that the recipes and techniques in this book are simple (for Indian food, anyway) but they produce dishes with very deep flavors. That said, even the meatier curries are lighter and fresher than what I have eaten in most Indian restaurants. In fact, for the most part, I now prefer to cook and eat my own Indian food. At the risk of sounding corny, these recipes have given me a lot of pleasure.
Two other quick points: Since I've been using this cookbook I've tried others, as well as some recipes that I've found online but hands down this book beats all. I find that other recipes produce dishes are either too heavy, aren't flavorful enough, take too much time or the recipes themselves just don't feel inviting to me. I use other cookbooks for other types of food, of course, but for Indian food I'd have to say this is the cookbook. Also, I've been to India a couple times, as well as other places with substantial Indian populations--Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia--so even though I've only been cooking Indian for a year I've known quite a range of Indian food over the years.
And now, the food:
The dals: There are several dal recipes in this book and I've cooked them all. They range from very simple with just a few ingredients to more complex, with multiple layers of flavoring. My favorites are the `simple lentil dal with fresh ginger, green chiles and cilantro', which smells especially fresh and bright when on the stove, and the `simple lentil dal with whole cinnamon, cardamom and cloves'. Both of these have pretty complex flavors but, as a dal should be, they're light.
The vegetables: I haven't made all the recipes in this section but have yet to hit a dud. I'm a real fan of these dishes because the ingredients are inexpensive and the dishes themselves are very healthy and, as an unabashed carnivore, they I'm pleased with their surprisingly huge flavors. A few favorites are `stir fried carrots with cumin and lime', `smoked spiced eggplant' and `Indian cheese in an herbed green sauce'. These dishes are all pretty easy to make, although some take a bit more time than others.
Chicken dishes: I've cooked all the chicken curries and while I have my favorites I'd say they are all outstanding. In my old job I used to bring these in for my lunch and people would literally freak out when they smelled them from across the office. You could say that some of the curries produce a bit too much sauce but I don't mind eating this with rice or bread, especially since it makes the dish go a bit further. There are also recipes for ground poultry dishes and Cornish game hens, but I haven't made these yet. I'd agree with another reviewer who noted that you'll probably need to double the cooking time for the chicken curries. This also applies to the meat curries, below.
Meat dishes: I've made almost all these and have yet to hit one that was anything less than delicious. One thing I've learned is that if I'm cooking meat it's better to pay a little extra for high quality cuts. It makes a big difference. My favorite recipe in this section is the `lamb stew with tomato and southern Indian spices'. I make this with beef or lamb and either way it is one of the deepest, most mysterious dishes I've ever smelled or eaten. I also cook the Vindaloo dish quite a bit, with either pork, lamb or beef.
Fish & shellfish: As is the case with the meats, using the best fish you can afford is worth the extra money. If I can't spend it, then I hold off on cooking fish until I can. Fortunately, these recipes are versatile--I've cooked the `halibut in a hot-and-sour sauce' with either halibut, other sorts of cheaper white fish, scallops or shrimp. All were delicious (except my experiment with haddock, which was just so-so) and pretty much left the diners speechless. The `salmon curry' was something so spectacular that I couldn't believe I'd made by myself, while the `Mangalore fried shrimp' took virtually no time at all. I find that these dishes are at their best if you leave the fish a bit on the rare side. If that sounds a bit strange, just try it once and decide for yourself.
Raita, pickles & chutneys, drinks: I've made a couple of each and have been happy with them all. I've been particularly happy with the raitas (especially the pineapple raita) since they're easy, taste great and for some reason guests are amazed to find them on the table.
Rice dishes: The cookbook notes that it's impossible to overestimate the importance of rice to Indian culture and spiritual traditions. Well, then it's no surprise that the rice dishes in this book are suitably rich and creative. For me, plain basmati rice is profound enough, but dishes such as ` lemon rice' or `coconut-mint rice' put me on the verge of hallucinating.
Appetizers, snacks, flatbreads, sweets: I haven't made any of these. A couple friends have and, like pretty much everything in this book, the reports are all very positive.
A couple final suggestions: Not everyone wants to blow a lot of cash on a pot but especially for the curries, which simmer for a long time, a high-quality pot makes a world of difference. I use enamel-coated cast iron and it radiates the heat in such as way that the sauce becomes very hearty and I think this also helps open up the magic of the spices. On the other hand, when visiting a friend I cooked in a lighter pot and the curries wouldn't thicken properly. Also, don't be put off if you realize you have to buy some new spices to cook these dishes. Really, you don't need many, they aren't expensive, they're very good for your health and they'll open an entire new universe of flavor. If you can't find everything in your grocery store, go online. Finally, once you get comfortable with the recipes, you'll find that you get faster at putting together the spice mixes. Relax, set aside some time and you will be very happy with the food you'll be able to create.
My favorite Indian cookbook.......2007-02-16
I own a lot of Indian cookbooks and this is my favorite one. The recopies here tend to be a lot healthier than other cookbooks, but they still taste authentic due to Saran's technique of roasting and layering his spices. You'll want to find a well stocked Indian Grocery store after getting this book to stock up on cardamom pods and curry leaves. I can't wait to check out Saran's restaurant (Devi) next time I'm in NYC.
Indian cooking for the American palate? Yes!.......2007-02-07
As someone who loves traditional South Asian food, my natural tendency has been to share it with my non-Asian friends too. Yes, that means my American friends who grew up eating foods that are much milder in flavors and intensity. However, being a typical Asian male means that I was never taught how to cook. But I love cooking and whatever I did learn, it was mostly by trying to remember my mother and aunts cooking whenever they did let me in to the kitchen. The rest was based on experimentation and of course, a big dose of gut instinct. But that generally meant strong and sometimes imbalanced and unpredictable flavors.
That all changed when I came across Suvir's book! Not only can I make consistently tasty and easy to prepare foods, he has also been the teacher that I never had. I actually enjoy just reading this book for fun.
This book makes a great present as well for those who like Indian food but are too afraid to try making it at home. My girlfriend had that problem. She is a gourmet cook but she never tried to make Indian food. I got her a book and gave her a list of spices to get at our local Indian store (the book also has a list). Now she is fully stocked and ready to make most of the dishes in the book without having to search for a particular spice at the grocery store at the most inconvenient time, which is just before you decide to make one of the dishes.
Please go on and introduce yourselves and others to the joy of simple and mostly healthy Indian cooking. Suvir is a great teacher. Learn the basics from him in this book and then experiment! Good luck.
Khalid
Wonderful!.......2007-01-03
This was my first experience cooking Indian food at home. Wow! Now my husband and I actually prefer my own cooking to that of any of the Indian restaurants here in Buffalo. The photos are great, the directions easy to follow, and the result is fantastic. This is one of my favorites.

Polly - the Alarm Clock Cat.......2007-07-22
As a writer of cat mysteries, I often speak to large groups of people, and they frequently ask about animal communication, since Marmalade, an orange tabby cat, (a major character in my mystery series) speaks in italics throughout the books. I answer that I know we can communicate with animals and hear what they say to us. As evidence I cite the story of Polly, my alarm clock cat. Whether people express belief or they raise their eyebrows at me, I send them to this book.
I like the way Marta Williams emphasizes that we would get further by listening than by constantly telling animals what we think. They know what we think, because they're very good at listening already.
When we take the time, as she suggests, to tell an animal "I admire your intelligence and beauty," we grow in the process. LEARNING THEIR LANGUAGE is a lesson in life skills that we all could use.
Interesting.......2007-03-09
This is such a fascinating topic. If you want to dive deeper I recommend "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne, which combines animal training with philosophy, linguistics, and literary criticism. It'll certainly expand your understanding of human-animal communication. If you are an animal trainer-- or even just an animal lover-- it's definitely worth checking out.
IT HELPED ME.......2007-01-19
This book helped me to understand the experiences I have had on my ranch with several of my anamals. I now know what took place and I agree with the author fully. I have actually used her tichnique on my "Best Friend" a Chocolate Lab, and it worked! I have also been the RECEIVER of messages.
The Best I Have Read On This Subject.......2006-07-29
Marta Williams has done an excellent job of organizing, presenting and providing scientific back-up for her information, where appropriate. She is a teacher in the true sense of the word and patiently guides students through all the pitfalls of negative mind traps, suggesting methods to overcome initial fears of failure.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all who are truly interested in animal communication and feel it will be a good investment for you.
Excellent Learning Tool.......2005-10-26
I just finished Learning Their Language, and am getting ready to re-read it, highlighter in hand. It is that good, if your goal is to gain expertise in animal communication. I began with Carol Gurney's book, The Language of Animals, which I felt was a good starter book. It sort of primes the reader for this book. Learning Their Language was extremely well written for use as a text book/learning tool (which is the reason I wanted it in the first place) using a good combination of Ms. Williams own experiences, the experiences of her students, and liberal "homework" assignments.
This book goes a step further than most, offering techniques for communication with plants, rocks, and mountain ranges (to name a few) but Ms. Williams herself invites you to skip over any sections that are out of your range of comfort or your belief system. At the very least, when reading the plant/nature/landscape sections, you will come away with a sense that God can't be too happy with modern man's stewardship of all that we were graciously given. And that, in my humble opinion, is a lesson we should ALL learn.

Not as good as they used to be........2004-01-27
I have been buying the Shooters Bible now for over 20 years.
They seem to be getting worse each year. It is inaccurate in some places and wrong in others.
The Gun Digest has better coverage as far as models go, the "Bible leaves out many makes and models.
They really need to hire a "gun" person to review this book before it is released.
Examples of problems:
1. Page 334 the Enforcer does not have a 4.8" barrel.
2. Page 331, New Model Super Single-Six???? Looks a lot like a Vaquero
3. What happened to Armalite/Bushmaster Rifles? Still in business, but not in the "Bible".
4. Numerous Ruger models missing.
This may be my last year for this dissappointment.
Some of the articles are good, but I would wait until it goes on sale before I would spend the money.

Lots of Articles - Little on Firearm values.......2002-05-09
Lots of articles on topics related to shooting from A to Z. I was looking for a back up for Gun Traders and Gun Digest for research and value information. I was disappointed with the Shooter's Bible in this respect... however, should you need information on ballistics, reloading, some history and many other items, it might be for you!
Shooters guide.......2000-10-06
This is a reference guide for medium range and rifle shooters. Long range shooters and deep forest shooter datas are of less depth.
That's right, an index of NEW firearms........2000-06-13
If you want something that lists collectible firearms, look for something with the word "COLLECTOR" in the title. Meanwhile, the Shooter's Bible is an invaluable source of information for someone seeking information on NEW or recently manufactured firearms. Not much else like it available, and it's updated annually.

Book Description
Walter Benjamin observed in his writings on the interior that 'to live means to leave traces.' This interior design theory reader focuses on just how such traces might manifest themselves. In order to explore interior design's links to other disciplines, the selected texts reflect a wide range of interests extending beyond the traditional confines of design and architecture. It is conceived as a matrix, which intersects social, political, psychological, philosophical, technological and gender discourse, with practice issues, such as materials, lighting, colour, furnishing, and the body. The anthology presents a complex and sometimes conflicting terrain, while also creating a distinct body of knowledge particular to the interior. Locating theory on the interior through these multifarious sources, it encourages future discourse in an area often marginalised but now emerging in its own right.
Within the reader individual excerpts are referenced to their place in the matrix and sequenced alphabetically. This organising strategy resists both a chronological and themed structure in order to provoke associations and inferences between excerpts. In this way the book offers the possibility of examining the interior from multiple vantage points: a disciplinary focus, the spatial and physical attributes of interiors, historical sequence, and topical issue based. Excerpts from Thomas Hope, Catherine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edith Wharton and Charles Eastlake provide contemporary nineteenth century accounts as the profession emerges, whereas Barbara Penner, Penny Sparke, Charles Rice, Georges Teyssot and Rebecca Houze offer re-interpretations of this period. The complexities of the twentieth-century interior are revealed by Robyn Longhurst, Kevin Melchionne, George Wagner, John Macgregor Wise, Joel Sanders and many others.

Biographies .......2007-10-16
Inspirational book regarding an afro-americana male that overcame terrific odds and became a world famous neurosurgeon and who gives credit to God for his abilities and mother's upbringing for him and his brother in becoming an engineer.
It would be great it his book could be translate to Spanish an other languages which would reach other children an adults.
This is an amazing book........2007-08-25
I was assigned this book for my high school reading list and i thought it would be incredibly boring.I was really surprised by the mix of medical terms and personal circumstances. This is probably the best book I have ever read.
Inspiration.......2007-07-24
I enjoyed this book very much. I am a pre-med student, and I think all pre-med student get discouraged at one point because of all the hard work. Before I read this book, I was nervous about my upcoming semester with the work load. Reading about Dr. Carson's story gave me the extra push I needed to take on the next semester with a little more needed ambition.
The Stuff Heroes Are Made Of........2007-07-13
When you think of a hero, what comes to mind? Bruce Willis in a Die Hard movie? Rocky, perhaps? After reading Gifted Hands, there was no doubt in my mind that Ben Carson is a hero.
The most amazing thing is, that upon reading this book, you will realize that he does not regard himself as such. He humbly acknowledges that he is a child of God and that he is out to put out his best efforts in this world. Ben is a gentle giant - he is a highly capable individual with the ability to save lives - and although he is a person that merits much respect, he acknowledges the value of every human as just that: a human. In other words, he considers himself an equal with someone who, for example, sells cotton candy on the beach for a living.
I rated the books five stars because it is so inspirational. Through his well told story- that of a economically handicapped youth in a segregated society who becomes one of the world's best neurosurgeons - he shows us that there are no excuses in life. We all have obstacles - some small, some mammoth - but we can all pull strength from ourselves and God to make something great of ourselves. His faith and virtues have taken quite far in his life - and it has been accomplished by giving his best efforts each day.
Highly recommended reading for everyone - especially anyone facing hard times that make them feel like they cannot be their best - the book engagingly gives us very practical advice.
Inspirational Pioneer.......2007-07-03
If you're looking for an inspirational, I-can-do-it-too book for high school students, this is the one. Having gone from ghetto child to pediatric neurologist, Carson not only recounts his own journey but offers advice to young people as well as their parents. The life and death stories are page turners.

whose hands are these?.......2000-02-20
Gene Egidio's book is nothing less than extraordinary.Beyond exciting reading; it's all true. This work transcends all worlds of taboo and occultism. The directness and simplicity of his writing are the foundation blocks that make this work truely rich.I give this book 5 stars.
Incredible......an inspiring story for healers everywhere!.......1999-06-10
This book was great. It tells of a man who was thought to be possessed because of his healing abilities. An inspirational book that should be read by all. It makes you wish you had his healing abilities...
Gene Egidio ; "Torch of Socrates".......1999-05-22
Historically great souls have appeared on the Earth destined to assist humanity through its modern day plights. Gene Egidio displays the humility of such a great being.
If one were to take a historical perspective, we would find with all great souls, a common thread. While these individuals were commonly termed "Stand Alones," in reality they "Stood in Oneness." The Oneness of a "Godship" that guided them in humanity's work.
Winston Churchill; "We shall never surrender," Martin Luther King; "I have a dream," Douglas MacAuthor,"I am guided by God," Jesus; "Love One Another," Gandhi, Buddha and Lincoln are just a few examples of the servers of this Oneness.
Their common denominator ..."Selfless desire for Unity." Gene Egidio clearly carries the eternal torch (love/wisdom) of Socrates and other notable "Brain Trust" in his enduring life works. He is a living example of what Jesus meant when he said "Love One Another."
His book is priceless because for those who can see, those that can hear, and those that can feel, it holds a valuable key to unlocking the worlds within yourself. Change yourself and you change the world.
Thank you Gene, it doesn't matter "Whose Hands Are These" because truly to Know Thyself is the eternal gift. After all, could the answer be ... These hands are OURS?
The book was spell binding. Just couldn't put it down........1998-11-23
I cried so hard when I read about this man's childhood. It was incredibly powerful. The love and compassion this "angel" here on earth has for mankind is unbelieve. He is truly God's gift to us. You absolutely have to read this book!
