Excellently written, really funny........2005-09-01
Agreed with the above reviews; Burgess seems to have been typecast as the guy that wrote Clockwork Orange and wasn't that a violent movie?...
Before reading the Complete Enderby, A Clockwork Orange was the only Burgess book I'd read and I remembered it as written in a dense, sort of russian/english patois that it was sometimes hard to follow. I didn't think that Anthony Burgess would/could be 'a fun read'
I was very pleasantly surprised to find the Enderby novels very accessible, very entertaining, very funny.
Linguistic pyrotechnics, complete plot control but with a willingness to go completely off topic if he feels like it, a love for the quirkiness of character, respect for poetry and poets but not blind respect; so he'll look at some of the aspects of poets and poetry-writing with an eye to making fun.
There's also some biting societal commentary that, considering 1965 as copyright for the first one, doesn't feel too dated.
I'd maybe describe this as Cormac McCarthy writing A Confederacy of Dunces. This would probably annoy Mr. Burgess, but I think that fans of either would enjoy these books.
Having all four novels in one omnibus edition is a luxury I would strongly recommend. You're not forced to read them straight through but you have the option.
Enderby, Burgess at his best.......2001-07-31
"Inside Mr. Enderby," is wonderful and off beat. "Enderby Outside," follows the off kilter story of Enderby and the absurdity that is his life. "The Clockwork Testament," as the title would suggest, has shadings of Burgess' very well known book, "Clockwork Orange." The "Testament," is surreal and twisted while funny at the same time. The final story, "Enderby's Dark Lady," is wonderful and surprising to the reader with value not only for fans of the dyspeptic poet but lovers of Shakespeare as well.
While slightly dated, these stories have a bite to them that speaks volumes of truth for anyone who has been an academic, a professional writer or just a little bit out of touch with the world around them. Enderby is often misunderstood and though he makes his living in a "communication" field, he has a lot of trouble getting his point across to others.
Not only are these books funny, but as is often the case with Burgess, the satire is thinly veiled and pointing at both society and himself.
hilarious intro to eccentric English literati.......2001-04-27
Leave it to Burgess to create a poet so quirky, so outrageous and neurotic that you have to laugh at every page of his misdaventures. Whether offending strangely clad women in a gay bar or defending himself with a toilet seat, this man lives and was not just created. Clueless about the machinations around him and the pathetic hangers on that want to steal some of his glory, in his poet Burgess paints a disspiriting picture of the 1970s literary scene in London. His world is nightmarish, if leavened by a poet's vision and uncontrollable, irrepressible creativity.
Highly recommended and certainly one his best.
Burgess' Best.......2000-01-25
In these novels, Anthony Burgess has done more to de-mystify the creative process (and those who persue it) than any other modern writer. His protagonist, F. X. Enderby, professional English poet, is as flawed as any character ever created. From his almost constant malapropisms down to his bodily emissions, he is every person with true human frailties. He stumbles his way through everyday conversations (often both misunderstanding and misunderstood) while at the same time offending almost everyone he comes into contact with. He is incapable of handling life in the "real" world and is shamelessly exploited by those who do.
In spite of his human failings, Enderby produces things of great beauty. The delicately worded, well balanced verses offer a wonderful counterpoint to Enderby's social ineptitudes and lack of common sense.
There is also a fairly strong political angle in the books which readers in today's society should heed. Censorship, that demon of modern P.C. sensibility, is discussed here intelligently and honestly. Bear in mind, these books are fairly old and some of the racial and sexual comments made in them will reflect this. However, I think you will find a certain balance in their use; everyone gets it in the end. Including Enderby.
Awaiting rediscovery........1996-06-05
Burgess is probably the most underrated writer in English in the last half of the twentieth century. This collection of somewhat autobiographical novels about F.X. Enderby is on the surface an inventive jaunt about the globe and on little slips of paper, collecting half-noticed experience and half-lines of eventual poetry. Nabokov said that his work was (is?) most appreciated when the reader assumed the point-of-view not of the protagonist, but of the author or fashioner. Burgess is tricky on this point and seems to have played with the difficulty in this distinction throughout his career, making the character who is the narrator assume some part of the creation of the finished work and putting some part of himself in the animated speaker. I hope that in the near future this and other of Burgess' works (I'm reading Earthly Powers now) find a new audience because there is a great deal to enjoy and to absorb. He wrote a great deal and much of it is very great

Book Description
It is the year 1204, and the city of Constantinople burns. For the immortal monsters who have spent eternity in its shadows, it is both a cataclysm and a call for vengeance.
Malachite, leader of the city's Nosferatu, hunts through the ashes and dodges crusaders to find the Patriarch Michael, the vampire who founded the city as the expression of his immortal dreams. Malachite's search brings him beyond the city walls and sets him on a quest that will restore the Patriarch's dream-or damn it forever.
Dark Ages: Nosferatu begins the epic thirteen-part series of Dark Ages Clan Novels, chronicling a vast conflict among the vampires of the Middle Ages. The War of Princes begins here
Customer Reviews:
Great start to the series.......2007-02-24
This is the first of the dark ages saga and the first actual clan novel ive ever managed to get through. I tried, many years ago to read the modern age clan novels without much luck. Having recently gotten back into the obession that is the World of Darkness ive started to, upon reading this novel, buy any and all dark ages vampire i can get my greedy mits on.
I find this particular novel a great start to the series starting with the fall of constantiople and its Nosferatu elder Malachite and his Leper knights. Its all ways best to start a vampire novel series with blood slaughter and burning of a pretty city. What i find fascinating about it is, from a roleplayers point of veiw, actually getting into the mind of a member of the clan and the different ways of using certain disciplines. Like using Auspex to read if someone is lying to you. Little things like that made me turn the page. One downfall of this clan novel is that i felt the writer wanted to explore characters of other clans but obviously couldnt cuz these would be touched on at a later date so it often left me feeling that the other characters from the other clans where just 2 dimential and not really important. I guess i must just be paitent! Will look forward to the rest.
A great tale marvelously written.......2005-07-09
This is the first of the Dark Ages Clan Novels, which is a series of books written specially to shed some light (and darkness) on the nightly life of some noteworthy Canites (or Vampires) of White-Wolf's Dark-Ages: Vampire Role-Playing Setting. Although the books are mostly intended for the Role-Playing audience, The writers are of extraordinary talent and the writing lets the stories be graspable by more "mundane" readers.
This, the first of the novels, tells the story of the Nosferatu named Malachite, which is a leader of some influence within his clans members in the city of Constantinople.
His Character is well presented and I'll leave the plot-line for your own entertainment...
Welcome To The Crusade, A Vampire's View.......2004-12-18
The basis for this series is the idea that Constantinople was a city largely owned and run by vampires. Vampires far more focused on creating a 'civilization' than the modern clans are, i.e., the have a dream of their own. Religion plays an unexpectedly large part. It drives the decisions of Malachite, who was a bishop while alive, and an intensely worshipful Nosferatu in his undeath. The worship has been displaced, however onto Michael on of the rulers of the city, who is a true elder.
But the city of the dream has come to naught. In 1204 the invasions of the crusades come to the walls of Constantinople, and Christian knights, Turks, and even pagan barbarians overrun the city. Malachite, entering the city to find Michael and try to save the dream must face the horror of invading kine and kindred come to kill and plunder. Malachite's quest for understanding is the sum of the story, as Fleming uses him to introduce the themes that will haunt this series.
As a character, Malachite has some shortcoming. He is a 300 year old vampire in the service of one of the rulers of the city, and all he seems to be able to think of is finding someone who will set things right. That and worry on perpetually about the state of his scions. I would have preferred some stronger at the center of the story rather than someone who is always looking under a rock (or a tomb) for what to do. He also shares a common trait of Camarilla vampires - a tendency to mourn his state as a fallen creature.
No doubt Fleming will make something more of Malachite before the series ends. The purpose of this book is to outline the focus of the series, and set a scene where mysticism, insanity, and betrayal are the great themes. And while the book starts very slowly, it eventually accomplishes exactly that as it picks up speed. The world is divided into those who will want to read this series no matter what (like me), and those who, if they read this, will go no further. Being a vampire never seems to be any fun anymore.
Gherbod's Nosferatu (DA) falls short........2004-06-14
I loved Fleming's Nosferatu from the clan novel series, but I'm unimpressed with this kick off to the Dark Ages series. The story slugs about for the first 150 pages where we witness Malachite getting bitch slapped about for the entirity of it's pages. Malachite seems to reflect none of the resourcefulness that his character and clan seem to define. Malachite's conflicts are prodominantly internal and while fine in the core of a series it is an odd way to kick off a series. This book seems more like the written collection of a few amateur players' game sections. I could heardly hear Malachite's religious conviction for the constant wailing of the appetite of the beast. This I'm sure is the author's intent, but it just made the story seem to revolve around the character's indulgence (a trait better suited for Toreador.) I wished they had focused on the humility and steadfastness of the clan. The female mortal doctor was an odd addition to the cast of characters. I wonder why she was even added. Malachite's comatose child takes up too much text. I'm disappointed. I think Fleming does good work though and I expect his future work to make up for this little stumble.
Good start to an interesting series........2003-12-28
The historical setting of Nosferatu is a good place to begin this series. The sack of Constantinople marks a turning point in history and marks the end of an era, for both Cainite society and human civilizations. Refugees flee the burning city, while a new power supplants the old. Thus is introduced Malachite, leader of one of the scion families formerly of the Triumvirate, which has fallen with the loss of Michael and the disappearance of the Dracon.
Malachite attempts to salvage what is left of The Dream and believes the key to this lies in finding the Dracon. We are introduced to some important characters who will be central in novels following Nosferatu in the series. The telling of Malachite's embrace and the independent scenes involving examples of savagery and heroism are well written and create vivid pictures with words. If you removed the vampire element, this book would still be an engaging book to read ~ the fact that the characters are vampires give them additional depth and afford the author creative latitude in weaving a wonderful tale that is worth the telling.
Get this book and begin a journey that will leave you wanting to learn more about many of the things introduced on each page. You won't be disappointed.

Bloch may be gone, but his tales remain........2001-10-16
Despite being famous for the film adaptation of a single novel, Robert Bloch's greatest contributions to genre literature were arguably in the short story format. Whether he was writing for the pulps or the slick professional magazines, Bloch could be counted on delivering a unique and addictive blend of twisted shock and sarcastic black humor. Each of these 'Complete Stories of' volumes, of which Bitter Ends is the second of three, are pretty much required in any genre fans library. Highly recommended.

It's important to choose our friends wisely, and relationships with man's best friend require a special kind of wisdom. Renowned veterinarian Bruce Fogle (Natural Dog Care) has compiled over 400 pages of helpful advice concerning canine companions, and those looking to learn more about their favorite breeds need look no further. The New Encyclopedia of the Dog's six chapters are filled with gorgeous photos illustrating dogs of all ages from every breed imaginable. While the majority of the book is devoted to explanations of specific breeds, five short chapters provide information on evolution, domestication, health and anatomy, communication, and the roles dogs have played in recent human history. With historical photographs of tapestries, ceramics, and movie posters, as well as intricate diagrams of canine anatomy and charts outlining proper health care, these chapters provide great material for middle-school research papers or science-fair projects.
The 310 pages that fall within the "Domestic Dog Breed" chapter are further divided into nine categories of dogs that range from fascinating primitives to hard-working livestock and guarding dogs. Each breed has multiple photos, both as an adult and a puppy, and a standard set of information that includes size, weight, life expectancy, date and country of origin, and AKC registration. A few simple icons, explained in this chapter's introduction, provide you with information at a glance--when learning about new breeds, you'll know right away if the dog requires extensive grooming and plenty of exercise, or is suitable for small children and city dwelling. From the popular golden retriever to the exotic xoloitzcuintli, the perfect pooches in these photos would melt even the heart of Cruella DeVille. --Jill Lightner

Grreat for the inquisitive mind.......2007-09-19
This book is a quick guide to all the dog breeds in the world. My husband and I refer to it frequently; for example, if we see a breed we're unfamiliar with we'll look it up in this book. Or if we meet a dog that is behaving in a certain way, we go to this book to learn what the typical behavior for that breed is. The photographs are straightforward and not overly styled. Yet the photographs are so professional that you really don't need a different book that may have lot's of "beauty" shots in it. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs in general, and who is interested in learning a little bit about all the specific breeds.
The last comment I'd like to add is that this book is really quite beautiful for a reference book. It's worth the price, and if you are a dog lover it will be in your library forever.
Encyclopedia of the Dog.......2007-08-01
I love this book. I knew what it was before buying it, as had borrowed it for a while before buying. If you love to look at the various breeds of dogs, or need some background on a variety of dog breeds, you will enjoy this. Tons of information on each breed, great photos, and a historical section that is fascinating. Also a good dog anatomy section.
General information, but it does cover rare breeds.......2007-06-17
This book is useful as a reference and for finding information on rare breeds not recognized by the AKC, but the lack of in depth information outweighs that benefit. It's great for a quick breed overview and photos, but really only useful for children and newbies.
Bow-Wow Wonderful.......2007-05-25
One of the best canine reference books I have ever read. The photography is beautiful and unlike many such books, we are treated to photos of both adult and puppy of the breed. Book also contains an excellent health section on the anatomy of the dog and provides an outstanding aid in making preliminary home diagnoses which provide useful information for the vet. Photos also show the dogs in various habitats. Book is a delight for dog lovers of all ages. I purchased the book for my wife who is trying to decide on the best choice for her next dog and our granddaughters love it as well. We usually wind up getting mutts, and most often from the ASPCA, but this book tells us what characteristics we can expect in mixed breeds. Outstanding book.
A Favorite Reference.......2007-03-26
I understand the complaints of lack of detail on each breed. For those of us who have owned dogs for many a year this book is a great over-view - well put together and informative when choosing our next companion. Though it lacks full detail on each breed, its breadth (not just in number of breeds but in history, care, physiology, and why such an animal has this specific set of needs) far outweighs the detail. This book is a great starting point - upon finding a breed that you think will suit you, then research it further by perhaps finding a breed specific book or reading up online.

best in its field (of one).......2007-10-01
This is the best book I've seen (and I've looked through EVERYTHING at Barnes and Noble and Borders stores) on making all kinds of three-dimensional paper creations. In fact, it's pretty much one of a kind. True, as another reviewer says, it doesn't have patterns for the illustrated projects, but it does have good instructions. I would think that most people would want to come up with their own works by using the illustrated techniques, and being inspired by the author's finished projects. After all, the idea is to be creative, isn't it?
Where are the patterns?.......2007-06-27
The illustrations were beautiful, and I was disappointed to learn that patterns were not included.
Good artistic selections.......2007-04-03
Diane Maure-Mathison does a good job of putting together a nice selection of creative ideas with paper. She focuses on creativity and simple ideas that can be easily expanded. Her work on pop-ups which I was looking for covers the basics but does not go into the details of more complex design.

Book Description
Photographer Dominique Nabokov has documented the living rooms of well-known Parisians - artists, writers, designers, intellectuals, and the occasional celebrity. The rooms vary widely from one another in terms of formality and decor, but they are all equalized under the gaze of Nabokov's camera. Each room is shot simply as it happened to appear on that particular day, without any people. Using discontinued Polaroid Colorgraph type 691 film, (which provides a full-color transparency in four minutes), Nabokov does not use special lighting, or allow the rooms to be rearranged or touched by a stylist. The result is a series of fascinatingly deadpan photos that puts an ironic slant on the celebrity interior genre. These peeks into the living rooms of celebrated Parisians will provide hours of voyeuristic pleasure. The book includes more than seventy living rooms of such diverse Parisians as Jean-Paul Goude, Andree Putman, Christian Liaigre, Ingrid Caven, Jeanne Moreau, Victoire de Castellane, Loulou de la Falaise, and Jacques Grange, to name a few.

Original coverage, second in series.......2003-02-27
This book is an original. Ms. Nabokov uses special film (purposely chosen, from a lot of film no longer available) to document various creative people's living rooms--people who are rich and some who are not so rich. She did a similar book called "New York Living Rooms." The rooms have no people in them, and Ms. Nabokov prefers owners would do no touch up of their spaces, when notified that she will be photographying their living rooms. The people covered are jazz players, designers, literary people--many names one would recognize. There is a subtlety to her technique. When I saw "NY Living Rooms," I snatched it up, and could not wait for "Paris Living Rooms." I was not disappointed. Going through the book puts me in a reverie of sorts. Some rooms are natural and show they are not the work of design "experts," whereas others are worthy of design magazines. The common element is that the personality of the owner shows through, even without the person being present. The combination of high end and low end makes for interesting viewing, and also makes me feel a bit like a voyeur, looking into someone's living room, unobserved. I will buy any future volumes by Ms. Nabokov.
limited appeal.......2002-12-18
When you found this book, I hope you were not expecting beautiful photos of French Country or Classic styles of interior design. Instead, this book is the equivalent of a bad art house movie. It has out-of-focus pictures of grungy looking rooms taken at unflattering camera angles in bad lighting.
If you are someone who likes to polish up "diamonds in the rough," you may like this book. Because I think only people that can look at junk and find some intrinsic value in it will like this book. However, those people will probably like the book titled Big City Junk better.

Lovely.......2003-09-28
Boris Vallejo has always been a personal favorite of mine. His ideas are unlike any others and his work with the brush is amazing. This book shows paintings that I hadn't even known existed. Anyone, in my opinion, who does not like his artwork is more than likely jealous and needs to keep their opinions to themselves if it is not helpful.

Words and wisdom from Chicago Bulls #23: Mega-superstar, "His Airness"
He is the most successful player to ever wear a basketball uniform. On the court and off the court, Michael has entertained the world as a pitchman, movie star, spokesperson, and an extraordinary athlete-although not the greatest baseball player. For the first time ever, bestselling author Janet Lowe has compiled a portrait from Michael's own words. Michael Jordan Speaks touches upon everything about the sport, his mega-superstar status, and his life, culled from articles, newscasts, and interviews.
Customer Reviews:
excellent competitor.......2003-11-18
Michael Jordan Speaks is a very good book because Michael lets you know what he went through as he looks back at it all. As I read it I kept on thinking to myself whoa!. Mike had that God- given talent that comes naturally and he was determined to become a better player. He started to put a lot of work in and had that ability to make it. Micheal said "It's not how you start, it's how you finish." "It's not what's on you, it's what's in you." The stuff that he went through I didn't think that he would be able to conquer it. Mikes words made me think positive and how things in life will work out. His sophomore year he faced a bad thing that he felt like not playing anymore. He got cut from the basketball team. Micheal's coach felt like he wasn't ready, so he worked at it. As time went by money started to come and people were amazed on how this boy turned out to blossom.
Michael Jordan Speaks.......2003-03-26
Many people know Michael Jordan as a legend, but did you know that even this legend has failed. As a sophomore in high school, Michael was cut from the varsity basketball team. Though he may have had thoughts of giving up, it inspired him to work even harder. Michael Jordan Speaks by Janet Lowey tells the story of Michael's life, and what obstacles he has overcome. Throughout the book, Michael faces many struggles, not just physically but emotionally. This sports superstar had to deal with the murder of his father, his business (Jordan), and entertaining the fans of the Chicago Bulls. No matter how bad the problem looked, he never gave up.
Follow Michael Jordan through the ups and downs of being the worlds most known person. See what it's like from growing up in a small town in North Carolina to packing NBA stadiums in almost every city he goes to. Michael has a storybook of a life, from what the general public knows. Find out what conflicts Michael came upon on his journey to the top.
Michael faces many challenges throughout his life. The most difficult challenge brought upon the superstar was the murder of his father. Though Michael did retire from the NBA after his fathers' murder, he didn't just give up. He needed a break from the spotlight while he got his emotions in sorts. Later he did return to the NBA, but in my mind that isn't even close to giving up, because he returned to the Bulls to win three Championships in a row. Michael also faced some trouble with his gambling problems. Michael denies that he has ever had a gambling problem, though many NBA officials beg to differ. Reporters have tried to get him in trouble with the contract he signed with the NBA in reference to gambling. In the end the NBA couldn't try Michael for anything because he would make bets on legal things, such as a private golf game, or a card game. Throughout the whole conflict, Michael never lost his cool to any reporter, though many reports goal in life was to try to get Michael to explode at them just to get a good story. Michael hasn't once lost his cool in the public eye, because he believes that he is someone who kids look up to. He wants to give out a positive image, so that kids will follow his lead of being a polite and respected person.
Janet Lowe took a different type of approach to writing this book. She based the book on quotes that Michael has said, and then went off on a tangent to tell his life story. It is a different type of read, but it is interesting to see what Michael is feeling in his quotes, compared to what is happening in his life. It took me a couple pages to get used to the style, but it is an interesting way to look at his life.
Through all the ups and downs in his life, Michael never once gave up or lost his cool. He kept his eyes on his goal, and remembered his role in society as a role model. Kids look up to him, and he realized it, so he wanted to set a good example for the kids to follow. Nothing was handed to Michael on a silver platter, he had to work hard and never give up to achieve the level he was at.

Give Me More!.......2000-07-09
A quick and easy read about one of our true sports phenomonons. This book leaves us wanting more, infact when I finished my reaction was that now, I wanted to read a book about Michael Jordan.
What more can be said about the great one.......2000-06-20
Being a fan of the game but a Knicks fan, I can say this was a decent read about Jordans career. I always had great respect for the man and think he is the best basketball player of all time. This book will let you see in writing what he did over the years. Well put together by the author and worthwhile for anyone even those who are not fans.
