Marcus Stevens's debut novel, The Curve of the World, opens on a cinematic note: An Air France flight rapidly descends over the dense African landscape. The cockpit fills with smoke. Passengers brace for an emergency landing. Although the unlikely premise of this adventure tale--an American Coca-Cola businessman named Lewis Burke is lost in the rainforests of the Congo; his estranged wife and blind 7-year-old son fly to Africa to rescue him--sounds straight out of Hollywood, the story itself is surprisingly well written, unfolding with the grim beauty of a modern-day Heart of Darkness. Even Lewis's inevitable bout with malaria and the attentions of an elderly ndoki (witch) seem believable, set against the author's deft depictions of war-ravaged villages, the poverty and resourcefulness of the rural Congolese, and the complicated politics of the region. Stevens is less sure-handed where ordinary human relations are concerned. He underestimates the caution of mothers (it is hard to believe that Lewis's wife's own elderly mother urges her to go to Africa to find Lewis, and harder still to imagine the young woman bringing her handicapped child to a war zone) and overestimates the kindness of strangers. This is a gripping story nonetheless and a complex, accomplished debut. --Regina Marler
Book Description
After New York businessman Lewis Burke's plane makes an emergency landing in a remote area in Congo basin, armed rebels seize the aircraft, forcing Lewis to flee into the rainforest. As he struggles to survive the unrelenting heat, battling thirst and hunger, he confronts his darkest fears and greatest disappointments: his crumbling marriage; his distant relationship with his seven-year-old son, Shane; and the lack of meaning in his life.
When Lewis's wife, Helen, discovers that he has disappeared, she dares to search for him herself. As she and Shane trek upriver into the forbidding forest, thwarded at every turn by the military conflict raging around them, the boy's visions and dreams of his father give Helen hope. Meanwhile, Lewis is rescued -- and ushered deeper into the jungle -- by a young Congolese boy, who helps him find a side of himself he thought he'd lost.
A stirring adventure, The Curve of the World is a riveting story about crossing barriers and regaining love, and about the resilience and tenacity of the human spirit.

A remarkable mix; adventure and deeply felt love.......2007-03-09
I picked this up as a random choice at the library, and found it to be one of the best novels I've read in years. Although I agree with other reviewers that there are some implausible plot devices, I literally had to force myself to stop reading it so I could go to sleep. There are many passages which capture the inner experience of genuine love in a way that's rarely articulated. The author also portrays life in a ravaged country in a way that captures the beauty of the life there without skirting the horror. Altogether a remarkable book!
A Nice Surprise Read.......2006-07-02
I bought this online in the bargain section and I had no idea what sort of book I was getting! Then when it arrived there was no synopsis or 'blurb' to describe the book - it was a complete mystery! It turned out to be a great story about a Coke executive who gets stranded in the Congo jungle after his plane crashes.
You will have to suspend your disbelief a little bit when the exec's wife travels to Africa with their blind son to see what she can find. Other than that, everything else is completely believable.
I thought the characters were great. My favorite character was Kofi - he was so selfless and inspiring.
This book is beautifully written and I highly recommend it.
The Curve of the World.......2005-12-13
The author is unable to develop the characters and is completely inconsistent in his storytelling (third person but not objective but not insightful either) and therefore unable to secure the readers investment in the outcome. I was completely disapponited in this book.
Beautiful writing and compelling read.......2005-10-06
This book is not only a page turner, but leaves an indelible mark on the memory. Stevens opens new doors on the mysteries of Africa, midlife struggles and relationships. A great book.
A Must Read.......2005-03-31
I loved this book so much, it was my book pick when it was my turn to host our book club and my book club loved it as well. I appreciate the research that went into writting this book - it takes you into the African Congo for survival yet offers a human touch that is touching. This was one of those "read in 3 days" books, because I could not put it down. I could not wait for Stevens next book "Useful Girl" to come out and it was equally pleasing.

Interesting Life and Fabulous Pictures.......1998-08-12
Freeman Paterson's pictures alone make this book worth buying. I have been a fan of his for quite some time and really enjoyed reading the tales of his travels. Those stories really intensified my appreciation for his work. If you like Freeman Paterson's pictures you will like them even more after reading this book.
As I read and embrace the images I can feel the passion........1998-07-19
I am a photographer on the west coast of Canada. I have been a serious one for about 5 years. My love is in the nature of things. Landscape, seascape, flowers, etc. I have admired Freeman Patterson's exquisit work through the lens of his camera for many years. This book was very calming and gave a real sense of gratitude that we as human beings, especially photographers, are given this presious gift in that we can paint with light! I, in my own work try to convey the feeling to the viewer that of which I felt at the time of creating the image. I was also impressed with his text, as he conveys his down home nature through the way his art is written about and expressed. I can only continue to strive to become as good as he in my own right. It truly is my passion. One does not get tired of nature as she is forever giving us new opportunities to freeze moments in time so that we may portray the art of it all. Shadowlight: A Photographer's Life, as all of Mr. Patters! on's publications, was exceptional. A must have for anyone professional, or amature. Yours truly, Joy Gerow

You can do it!.......2007-10-04
My husband travels often because of his job, sometimes months at a time. The company puts him up in a room with a kitchenette, but my husband does not cook. I was getting tired of his phone calls whining that he was sick of TV dinners and eating out. So for his last trip I bought him this cookbook. The incredulous look on his face was hilarious. I just said, "You can do it!"
And he did! The recipes are simple to follow and easy to make; varied enough to keep Mr. Finicky happy. He did complain that the some of recipes were lacking in flavor, so I told him a few dashes of Tabasco sauce would liven up the food. The lack of flavor is not the fault of the recipes because seasoning is included in the ingredients, it's just that he is used to my highly seasoned cooking. The best part for him is he cooks and eats from the same dish, so there is very little clean up. He loves the Maui Beany-Weenies recipe, actually making this for a company potluck.
Smiles all around!.......2007-08-10
Gave this to my son for college meals. He has very rarely made anything to eat for himself! . He and his three roomates have welcomed this gift and have already enjoyed a meal from it.
Good for those on their own.......2007-05-13
Bought this for my son when you moved into his first apartment, he says the recipes are pretty easy to make and pretty decent.
great for the single guy.......2006-12-25
If your own your own for the first time, divorced, etc. This will give you a good start on learning to cook. I found the best part of the book was the tuna casserole. YUM!
Paella was delicious!.......2006-11-15
I was a little worried that this cookbook would make me look like less of an actual cook, but I wanted something new and different that would help me use the microwave more. Wow, it is great! Last night, mostly my husband (I helped by shelling shrimp and opening a few cans) made Painless Paella. It was wonderful! I think I could have sat in the other room and not helped at all, and he still would have had a delicious meal ready in about 30-40 minutes. I am looking forward to his using this more and me taking a night off from cooking once in a while!
Product Description
This witty cookbook for men shows you how to use your microwave for more than popping popcorn. Chock full with 50 recipes for everything from Teriyaki Beef with Broccoli to a Breakfast Burrito you can whip up in less time than it takes to swing through the drivethrough. Clear, simple instructions and colorful illustrations make it a snap to prepare everything from soup to dessert. Best of all, these recipes all start with canned foods like tuna, beans and soup--things you probably already have on your shelf. And, as if that wasn't enough, this stuff is healthy, too! All these recipes were teste in a medium size 1,000 watt oven.

Customer Reviews:
JUST A GREAT BOOK.......2007-05-19
I keep this book by my desk and use it a lot to get information on different breeds. It gives a quick easy analysis of each breed, giving the reader a real good idea of the breed's positive & negative aspects, the information a person considering buying the breed really needs to know. Things like what health problems are characteristic of that breed and to ask breeders about, what the breed is Best With (for example: "fenced yards, obedience, close human contact, industrial-strength vacuum") and Not For (for instance: isolation, robotic obedience, inactive people")
The author's comments on English Bulldogs is funny, honest, and a good example. "Sleeping is this breed's favorite activity. Eatng is next, but they do love a good belly rub." "After drinking, they carry water in their jowls, slobbering across the floor. A sense of humor about the breed's propensity for flatulence is a good idea."
Absolutely must PRIOR to buying a dog.......2007-04-13
This book helped me find the PERFECT breed for me. You know how people try to tell you all about breeds from what they hear, or dogs they've known, but often they are wrong, or just plain uninformed. This book is ACCURATE, concise and totally reliable.
A MUST HAVE for anyone who is interested in buying a dog and being educated and realistic about the dog's needs and their own.
Definitely worth looking at.......2007-02-20
One thing I've always disliked about breed selection books is that they seldom give you a balanced description of the dog. Often it's heavily weighted for a positive outlook which makes every single breed seem like it could be the one for you. This book is different, and that's why I like it.
Describing the AKC recognized breed as of 1996, as well as a few rare breeds, you get a snapshot of the good, the bad, and the ugly with each breed. All of the basics are covered (protection ability, energy level, behavior with children/other animals, grooming) as well as some not typically covered (health problems, working ability). It also describes ideal and less-than-ideal types of owners. For example, the Rottweiler is described as best with strong confident owners who will train and socialize it early, not for pushovers with an invisible fence.
While a more detailed and lengthy description of each breed would be useful, you have to remember that this book has to cover 150+ breeds in less than 200 pages. This book is intended to help you narrow it down to a handful of breeds you might like. Once that's accomplished you go to breed specific books and other resources.
I give it 4 of 5 stars simply because it's from 1996 and doesn't include some of the breeds known today.
Very Practical.......2006-03-21
The reviews were very concise and well focused on the criteria that a prospective owner should consider.
The book only covers breeds -- it would also be nice to have a chapter on "choosing a mutt" and what the criteria, benefits and pitfalls might be.
Color pictures would make it easier to recognize familiar dogs, but, ultimately, it's not vital to decision-making.
Buy the author's other book!.......2003-08-27
I rated this book only three stars because the same information, expanded and updated, appears in "Choosing a Dog for Dummies," by the same author. The newer version is worth four or five stars, I believe. Both are easy to use, thanks to the telegraphic evaluations preceding each write-up. Despite there being no color pictures, this is a good reference for the price.

Decent and pretty infomative........2000-06-24
I decided to pick up this book while working on a brochure for a local establishment, it gave a good overview of basic principles of design but lacked a little as far as going into the digital realm. We in the design feild know that most traditional skills are the foundation for new, different and eye-catching graphic design. But, without dirrection that's all it is, a foundation. Maybe I need to explain that in no way should this book be a stand alone text but a suppliment.

Not obese but voluptuous.......2005-04-07
I own a copy of this book and I think the women are quite stunning. Not all of us are in love with Kate Mosses and Twiggys, or little boys. Some of us LOVE our women robust, bountiful and feminine. So, hats off to Phil Henderson for making these paintings of REAL women available to people such as myself.

Paul Klebnikov tells the incredible story of Boris Berezovsky, a one-time Russian car dealer who assembled a huge--and illicit--fortune after the collapse of Communism. "This individual had risen out of nowhere to become the richest businessman in Russia and one of the most powerful individuals in the country," writes Klebnikov, a respected reporter for Forbes. "This is a story of corruption so profound that many readers might have trouble believing it." Yet Godfather of the Kremlin is a careful work of journalism in which Klebnikov documents the business dealings of a man who once bragged to the Financial Times that he and six other men controlled half of the Russian economy and rigged Boris Yeltsin's reelection in 1996. Berezovsky survived both an assassination attempt and a murder investigation, and paved the way to power for Vladimir Putin. He and the other crony capitalists of post-Soviet Russia like to rationalize their deeds, writes Klebnikov: "Whenever I asked Russia's business magnates about the orgy of crime produced by the market reforms, they invariably excused it by pointing to the robber barons of American capitalism. Russia's bandit capitalism was no different from American capitalism in the late nineteenth century, they argued." Yet nothing could be further from the truth: Carnegie, Rockefeller, and their peers transformed the United States into an economic superpower. Berezovsky, on the other hand, has "produced no benefit to Russia's consumers, industries, or treasury." It's not that he didn't have an opportunity. To pick one example among many, he took over Aeroflot when it had a monopoly position in a booming market. But the company barely grew, and instead experienced myriad problems. Berezovsky controlled many businesses, but he was a lousy business manager; his only authentic success--as an auto dealer--depended on collusion. His real skill is shady dealmaking, especially with corrupt government officials. That's the way to success in modern Russia, as this well-told but troubling book reveals. --John J. Miller
Book Description
Boris Berezovsky's business career has been meteoric. In just six years he managed to seize control of Russia's largest auto manufacturer, largest TV network, national airline, and one of the world's biggest oil companies. When Moscow's gangster families battled one another in the Great Mob War of 1993-1994, Berezovsky was in the thick of it. He was badly burned by a car bomb; his driver was decapitated. A year later, Berezovsky emerged as the prime suspect in the assassination of the director of the TV network he acquired. Although plagued by scandal, he enjoyed President Yeltsin's support, serving as the personal "financial advisor" to Yeltsin and his family. In 1996, Berezovsky organized the financing of Yeltsin's re-election campaign-a campaign marred by fraud, embezzlement, and attempted murder. Berezovsky became the president's most influential political advisor, playing a key role in forming governments and dismissing prime ministers. Having labored to privatize the economy, Berezovsky privatized the state. Based on hundreds of taped interviews with top businessmen and government officials, as well as on secret police reports, contractual documents, and surveillance tapes, Godfather of the Kremlin is both a gripping story and a unique historical document.
Customer Reviews:
The Deadly Truth........2007-05-23
I personally witnessed the outcomes of the corrupted rule of the culprits portrayed by late Paul Klebnikov.
Many Russians believe that the truths revealed in this book were the cause of author's murder.
Great insight for Americans.......2007-03-01
This book tells a powerful story that most Americans are, sadly, unfamiliar with. Mr. Klebnikov outlines in impressive detail the history of Russia during the very turbulent times of the 1990s. The development of gangster capitalism under the Yeltsin regime in an environment of political corruption was a tragic episode in Russian history and an example of an opportunity squandered. This book outlines the rise of the mafia in Russia in the post-glasnost time period and the links they had to the Chechens and to the political leaders of the time.
While I sometimes became a bit lost in all the details and Russian names with which I was unfamiliar, the story came through well as Mr. Klebnikov built, step-by-step, a solid and well-documented case. This story is an important one for Americans who wish to better understand what happened during this time period and how it affected, and still affects, Russia. From political assassinations to presidential elections - the book tells a compelling and sadly disturbing story.
Since I have several Russian friends, I felt I owed it to myself to become more familiar with recent Russian history. And this book did not let me down. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in understanding Russia better and I suspect it will in time become a classic for the detailed description it provides of this time period in Russian history.
Highly recommended!
Berezovsky & the Litvininenko Killing (Polonium).......2007-02-22
Everybody should read this book - it helps to put the entire Litvinenko killing in perspective ; the dead Russian spy worked for Berezovsky - given Berezovsky long criminal history it would not be surprising at all that he was directly involved in murdering his own employee as part of his long ongoing campaign to overthrow the democratically elected president Putin and thereby illegally regain control of all of Russia's natural resources including in particular Russia's oil and gas wealth.
His insight Got him Killed.......2007-01-04
Paul Klebnikov is a modern Russian hero. He was assasinated because he tried to show the world how corrupt Russia had become at the hands of the oligarchs. "The Decline of Russia in the Age of Gangster Capitalism" is well written and organized. It follows not only the "rise" of Berezovsky but also illustrates how the majority of the Duma (Russian Congress) was in fact acting on behalf of the gangsters or were in fact gangsters themselves holding seats in the house.
It is a reavealing look into the saddest chapter of Russian history. A must read for anyone interested in politics or modern history. It is a shame and loss to us all that Paul was killed. Who knows what other truths he could have recovered had he lived. It is also a shame that in our modern age of information, only a few speak the truth - and if they speak to loudly they are silenced, as was Paul. May he rest in peace.
If you enjoyed this book, Paul also did an interview called "Theft of the century: Privatization and the looting of Russia." If you google it, you will find it on the net.
Telling The Truth Will Get You Murdered!.......2006-07-12
I am halfway through this incredible book and it deeply disturbs me that American Paul Klebnikov died because of this book and other articles he wrote while working in Russia for Forbes Magazine. Of late, all one reads is how someone incredibly powerful managed to get off the hook in one way or another. I am just weary of all the lies in the press and the deceitful 'spin' that the US media gives to people they find useful. No, we don't kill our reporters, but we ruin them in other ways. I hope I live long enough to see this change, but I fear it won't happen in my lifetime. I have learned from personal experiences in my life that 99 percent of what I have read and believed to be true was a lie. It starts with Santa Claus and moves on from there. This book has made me want to read more about Russia, the people, and the various governments. How sad I spent half of my life living in fear of the Russians, and they us. I tried to find 'Conversations With A Barbarian', also by Mr. Klebnikov, but it is no longer available. I feel so awful for his family and friends.
