Book Description
Scathingly clever short stories. Includes "The Devil in the White House" and "The Development of Iraq as a Case for the Files."
At once a genuine story-teller and a literary documentarian, Alexander Kluge's genius lies in the very special way he makes found material his own. Each of the miniatures collected here touches on "facts" and is only several pages long. In just a paragraph he can etch a whole world: he is as great a master of compression as Kafka or Kawabata.
Arranged in five chapters, the dozens of stories of The Devil's Blind Spot are condensed, like novels in pill form. The first group of stories illustrates the little-known virtues of the Devil. The second explores love from Kant and opera through the Grand Guignol. The third is entitled "Sarajevo Is Everywhere" and tests how convincing power is. The fourth group concerns the cosmos, and the fifth ranges all our "knowledge" against our feelings. In each piece, Kluge alights on precise particulars: on board the atomic submarine Kursk, for instance, we are marched precisely step by step through a black comedy of the exact, disastrous stages of thinking that lead to catastrophe. Sample titles include "The Devil in the White House," "The Development of Iraq as a Case for the Files," "Intelligence of the Second Degree," and "Love's Mouth Also Kisses the Dog."

Dispatches from the Grand Hotel Abyss.......2005-04-04
"What do you mean by the Devil?" asks the Secret Service agent in one of Alexander Kluge's short stories from The Devil's Blind Spot. "A man in Wittenberg," replies the university professor, a specialist in medieval metaphysics, who has been brought from Germany to the Pentagon's Terrorist Screening Center. "Specifically, the direct descendent of a scholar who fourteen generations back is said to have taught Hamlet and assisted Dr. Faustus."
Told in the style of Nietzsche's aphorisms and based on the found material of current events and historical anecdote, this book is bound to confuse readers looking for Evil incarnate. For, as Kluge shows, the Devil is no one person. Rather, the diabolical pervades the world we inhabit. Chernobyl, the Kursk, 9/11, asymmetrical warfare - the disasters of modernity are viewed by Kluge as missives to all of us, who live, as he writes, in the Devil's blind spot.
It has often been remarked that the Frankfurt School of philosophy - Kluge refers to Horkheimer, Adorno and Benjamin as his "teachers" - offers no solutions, only scenarios of doom. Recall the opening lines of Dialectic of Enlightenment, according to which "the fully enlightened earth radiates disaster triumphant." Indeed, the infernal elements of modernity figure prominently in these stories. However, Kluge's stories offer "antidotes" to the perceived pessimism of critical theory.
The black humor of these stories is clearly in a Swiftian tradition. For instance, in a story subtitled "Episode from the First Epoch of Globalization," Kluge traces our "sense of beauty" to heightened powers of imagination developed by our ancestors during the Ice Age: "Those were terrible years," Kluge writes, "without hope, and only in the hearts of man and beast did a kind of glow of former times, promising warmth, remain. In the end only stories." A far cry from today, yet the analogy sticks. The stories in The Devil's Blind Spot chip away at the forms of existence frozen in our collective memory - and provide reason to hope.

Loved it.......2003-11-03
This is probably my favorite of the series. I love how the author goes so deep into the characters emotions and problems. The only thing I really dislike about the series as a whole is the Tamrissa, Vallant thing. Tamrissa gets annoying after a while. But the rest of the characters are great and I love the detail put into her writing.
Gets worse not better.......2001-10-02
Ok, the first book was interesting, a bit slow and redundant when she described almost the same exact scene from five different perspectives, but on the whole it showed promise. The second book continued in the same vein, drawing the story out even more. The third book began to get a bit overplayed. By the fourth book I had just about had enough, but after getting that far in the series I couldn't stop without reading the fifth. Unfortunately, Sharon has one, maybe two, books worth of material which she stretches out over five. The characters seem like they would be complex when you first meet them but there is only so many ways a person can be emotionally traumatized before it gets really old. All they do it whine!
There are basically two types of Sharon Green characters. The evil ones, selfish, self-absorbed and unable to deal with reality, and the good ones, unbalanced, taken advantage of, and always right. Of course the main characters are good and perfect, though emotionally damaged, and they represent the Sharon Green philosophy of relative morality, except when it goes against what these characters believe is right, and uninhibited sexual awareness. She sets up the bad guys as straw dummies of the philosophies that she conceders "wrong" and precedes to tell them how stupid, selfish, and unable to deal with reality they are.
The plot is drawn out far beyond what it should be because everything happens not once, but FIVE TIMES! There are some good points though. Green does provide an intriguing society with a unique point of view. The use of the different elements in the Blending is original as well. Unfortunately, none of these things attain more than a superficial complexity, bogged down as they are by the author's shortcomings.
I would not recommend these books to any but the dedicated fantasy fan, as they will be far too heavy and monotonous for the casual reader.
Totally addicted... (and loving it!).......2001-01-26
I got addicted to this series when I went through my local bookstore to find a fantasy book with a good cover. I ended up with Convergence, and was addicted from the start. Unfortunatly, I had bought it only three days after it had been published, so I had to wait for each of the subsaquent (sp?) books to be written before I could sastisfy my addiction to the lives of Rion, Naran, Vallant, Tamrissa, Lorand, and Jovvi!
The books themselves are the most absorbing, well written books I have ever picked up, and, although she is not, I feel that Sharon Green's name should be listed along with those of Edgar Allan Poe, Ernest Hemmingway, and Henry David Thoreau as the best writers that this nation has ever produced.
Unlike most authors, Sharon Green can force her readers to feel emotion, including the most difficult emotion to elicit from a reader; hate. For her style of dealing with the deep-seeded, entrenched, all-consuming evil of the nobles makes the feeling of hatred towards them almost overwhelming. All in all, and incredable series, and I desperatly wait for the second book in the Blending Enthroned to be published.
Prophecy: Book 5 of the Blending.......2001-01-04
I love this author. Sharon Green writes a wonderful fantasy story. I would recommend all of her books to anyone, if you like fantasy.
This one was better........2000-07-11
After really liking the first book, and not being too thrilled with two through four; this book made up for it. It would have been perfect if Ms. Green could get rid of telling the story from so many points of view. There were a few surprises here -- good ones too. I'm still not sure if the five have faced the ultimate test. There was a great climax to this book; but not the one I was expecting. What Ms. Green DID leave me expecting was the next series in this world. I've read a lot of her books, they weren't that great. This series is MUCH better. Ms. Green, if you read this: How about a name other than "the Empire".

Book Description
The subject matter of this collection is varied, but displays Jones’ stance as a practicing SF writer and a feminist; the writing is characterized by both an incisive engagement with the texts and a refusal to dress that engagement in jargon. This very readable book provides insight into the work of one of the UK's most interesting writers and presents strong – sometimes even subversive – views of a range of modern SF and fantasy.
"Gwyneth Jones is one of the two or three most important writers of the current sf boom in the UK... from the evidence in this book it is clear she is also one of the most reflective and readable sf critics working today."—Science Fiction Studies

Excruciatingly chic to the highest degree, the Nobu restaurants are among the hardest to get into on three continents. They are the personal inspiration of a Japanese sushi-trained chef, Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, who, with unusual experiences in Peru, Argentina, and Alaska behind him, was fortunate enough to open an establishment in Los Angeles into which part-time restaurant entrepreneur and actor Robert De Niro happened to wander. During those years on the Pacific coast, Nobu began to experiment, combining the pure, fresh, uncomplicated flavors of sushi with the Western flavors of garlic, chili, and coriander. As he attracted a more upscale clientele, he complemented those flavors with luxury ingredients such as truffles and caviar. Nobu: The Cookbook represents the current state of play. Exquisite, expensive, and breathtakingly stylish, this food is designed to impress with its artful simplicity. Perhaps the two most representative dishes are the most celebrated: the New-Style Sushi, in which raw fish is given a sizzling dressing of hot oil; and the beautiful Black Cod with Miso, marinated in sake, mirin, and miso for three days then grilled and baked and served with a single ikebana-like spear of pickled juvenile ginger. Altogether a beautiful production.
There are aspects of this cooking, however, that for all its glamour may require the turning of a blind eye. How many home cooks will be prepared to disembowel a live octopus? And eyebrows may be raised among environmentalists at Nobu's championing of Arctic sea bass, a fish known before its cosmetic rechristening a few years ago as Patagonian tooth fish and that is likely to become extinct within three years through illegal overfishing in the southern oceans. Food for thought. --Robin Davidson, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
With his multinational and ever expanding empire of thirteen restaurants, Nobu Matsuhisa has become one of the most talked-about international restaurateurs and arguably the world's greatest sushi chef. In his first, long awaited book, Nobu: The Cookbook, Matsuhisa reveals the secrets of his
exciting, cutting-edge Japanese cuisine.
Nobu's culinary creations are based on the practice of simplicity the art of using simple techniques to bring out the flavors in the best ingredients the world's oceans have to offer and on his unique combinations of Japanese cuisine and imaginative Western, particularly South American, cooking.
While simplicity may be the rule in his cooking, exotic ingredients are the key to his signature style: in Matsuhisa Shrimp he combines shiitake mushrooms, shiso leaves, and caviar; Octopus Tiradito is made with yuzu juice and rocoto chili paste; he even gives away the secrets to making his
world-famous Seafood Ceviche, Nobu Style.
In all, fifty original recipes for fish and seafood are included with step-by-step instructions and lavish color photographs. It features all Nobu's signature dishes along with salads, vegetable dishes, and dessert recipes, while a special chapter about pairing drinks with the meals rounds out the
selections. A chapter dedicated to sushi instructs readers how to make Nobu's own original Soft Shell Crab Roll, Salmon Skin Roll and House Special Roll.
Throughout the book the author shares stories of his rich and varied life: his childhood memories of rural Japan; the beginning of his career; his meteoric rise to the top, as one of the most renowned chefs of his generation.
Featuring a preface by Robert De Niro, a foreword by Martha Stewart and an afterward by Japanese actor Ken Takakura, Nobu: The Cookbook is sure to be the season's hottest cookbook and a sure-fire classic for Japanese cooks and foodies alike.

Some of Nobu's signature dishes in a top quality book.......2006-03-03
Kodansha's corporate big wigs are Nobu fans so when he chose them to publish his first cook book, they decided to match the quality of the book to the quality of Nobu's ingredients. They used an eight colour separation process (absurdly expensive) for all the fish pictures, and try as you might you can't really see the dots that compose the image, at least not without a magnifying glass.
Nobu's aim is to proudly lay himself open to his public. He doesn't fear revealing his secrets because he's confident enough to know his style and character are unique to him. He wants to inspire amateur chefs.
Here are three of the simpler dishes that anyone could make.
1) Sea urchin in a shiitake mushroom cap, wrapped in steamed spinach, served on an egg sauce with a spoonful of salmon roe
2) Asparagus topped with salmon roe
3) Steamed monkfish liver with caviar
As the saying goes, the media is the message and the pictures actually help the amateur chef no end. With the superb pictures that accompany the recipes, you can execute these dishes almost from the name of the recipe alone. Without the pictures, you can't.
One caveat. Nobu is a name dropper. I've no doubt that Robert De Niro, Martha Stewart, Ken takakura, and Linda Evans really are his friends but he mentions famous names too often for my taste. On the other hand when I went to Nobu Tokyo during Nobu week, he was there and toured the dining room. He stopped by our table and signed a copy of his book for me. So he's not too proud to smile and have chat with us rabble; he really likes his customers.

Model of the excellent coffee table cookbook........2005-10-30
'nobu THE cookbook' by Nobuyuki Matsuhisa is Nobu's first cookbook and as he has a new title on the bookstands now, I thought it was high time I got around to reviewing it.
For starters, I must say I rank photographic flash way down on my list of criteria for a good cookbook. I have very little use for cookbooks used to grace a coffee table, since I have no coffee table. So, If impressive looking cookbooks from famous chefs is your cup of tea, then this is an excellent book. Otherwise, it doesn't do a lot for me.
For starters, while the book deals almost exclusively with fish cookery and raw fish dishes, the introductory material on techniques, especially knife techniques is pretty thin. The story on sushi prep is that it takes years to learn everything you need to know about good knife techniques, and we are given but a half a page without even some pictures of the types of knives used in the three techniques described.
I will say that most of the recipes are relatively simple, as long as you have the right skills, but the ingredients for a lot of the dishes are somewhere between difficult and impossible to find. The poster boy for this state of affairs is abalone. Throughout my whole life, I have never seen fresh abalone available on the east coast fishmonger's counter. Now, I suspect this Pacific shellfish is endangered almost to the point of extinction. But, as Bob Kinkaid so eloquently says in his cookbook, high end restaurants can get things which are simply beyond the reach of the average shopper.
If this were a book on classic Japanese cookery, I would have a higher opinion of it, but it is a song to the virtues of Nobu Matsuhisa. It is a very pretty song, well graced with paeons from business partner Robert DeNiro, best bud, Martha Stewart, and about twenty testimonial blurbs from the culinary greats.
If your thing is good books on and about celebrity chefs, buy this book. But, if your interest is Japanese cooking in general, start with Shizuo Tsuji's 'Japanese Cooking, A Simple Art'.
very satisfied with this provider.......2005-10-11
The book was in perfect shape, and it arrived promptly. This was a very good transaction, thank you
EXCEPTIONAL COOKBOOK.......2005-03-29
The recipes in this cook book are truly exceptional. The photography is beautiful and they aid in designing the finished dishes so they look beautiful as well as apetizing. I had a dinner for my relatives and used about 5 recipes from this cook book in one night. You know you have a good cookbook when all the guests talk about is the food! The only caveat would be for folks who don't have access to a good asian grocery store to find the ingredients or those who don't have the patience to do detailed prep work. For the gourmet cook who loves to please thier guests with the best dining experience--this cookbook will rock your world.
An absolute Gourmet cookbook!.......2004-08-02
This is one of my favorite cookbooks - an absolute gourmet experience that will appeal to everyone who loves Nobu's cooking. For those who also loves cruises: the book features some of his recipes found on board Crystal Serenity where the Sushi Bar features menu selections prepared by a Nobu-trained chef, and the Asian restaurant, Silk Road, features a six-course menu with dishes selected by Nobu as well. Fabulous photographs make cooking really easy and enjoyable.

Dog Agility.......2007-03-26
If you're interested in competing, this is a very good book to get started with and to use in conjunction with agility classes. If, like me, you just want to know more about the sport and maybe do a bit of backyard agility with your dog for fun and to give her an occupation other than chewing everything in sight, then it's really too advanced!
Good instructions.......2006-08-28
It gives good instruction for teaching a dog the begining of Dog agility. It makes anyone feel as though you can understand and perform any of the tasks written and described. It also teaches all of the basics of the sport. Very informative.
Intro to Dog and Handler - Agility.......2006-05-01
I bought this book a 1 1/2 years ago because it was recommended by a local trainer and handler. It sat through my first little class of agility at the local Humane society. But, my dog loved Agility so much, I found a need to look further. What a great book for someone with little time to spend reading and a great deal of learning to be done with an active dog. It has helpful tip boxes. So, if like me, you don't read it by the chapter, but by need you get to what you are looking for fast. Clear easy language. The Contents pages are listed under concise titles and appendixes are straight forward and helpful. The equipment list for simple backyard stuff... I can actually build. The useful info on various National club's focus and their differences; and where to get more info... great stuff. Why write a review now... well, I am buying another book for a friend who is getting into agility and buying the next book too for me. And it's on sale...a bargain especially if you think how little time the class instructor has to instruct you on handling your dog.
good book.......2006-02-28
I read this book a few times, and liked it. It has lots of pictures and does a good job explaining the obstacles. My dog appreciated to book too. She enjoyed learning the tricks and the time we spent together while we were training.
Great info........2006-02-17
This book gave a great background of the sport of agility. As someone who is new to the sport, I appreciated the simple ideas and descriptions on how to get started.
Book Description
This exploration into the structure of various weaves provides an understanding of how each weave works, guiding weavers to design and weave their own beautiful fabrics. The underlying principles that govern a particular kind of structure are explained, as are modifying the basic draft and choosing fibers and yarns. Comprehensive and detailed, the book covers plain weave, twills, satin, waffle weaves, distortions of the grid, three-element weaves, loom-controlled double weave, Bedford cords and piques, loom-controlled pile weaves, and crepe weaves.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, essential for really understanding weaves.......2007-08-17
I was very impressed by this book. I just picked it up a few days ago, and already have a much better understanding of what in a weave structure makes stable cloth, what to expect from different weaves in terms of draping and breathe-ability, working with Z and S-spun yarns, and even a bit about what to expect from different fibers (although this is not the focus of the book.) The construction of this book is also excellent--it's a heavy, hardbound book with coated paper and clear, well-shot photography. I'm excited to have this in my weaving library and highly recommend it.
Great for your reference library.......2007-04-05
Alderman is one of those rare combinations of artist AND teacher. The photographs grab you first. The charts are clear. The explanations are detailed enough for beginners. The various weave structures are charted for 2-, 3-, 4- 6-, 8-, and more-harnesses, as each structure may allow. Those new to weaving might find the directions less intimidating if they read the first two chapters before skimming the later chapters; the explanations will make more sense. This is a good boost to your creativity as well as a source to better understand weave structures.
Worth every penny - a great weavers book.......2007-01-15
I bought this book at the same time I purchased Twill Thrills, and couldn't tell you which one I like better. Mastering Weave Structures is a must have for every weaver, especially new weavers, or anyone wanting a better understanding of why things look the way they do, and how to make something look the way you want it to. Loads of beautiful pictures are inspiring. A great book for weavers of all levels.
Mastering Weave Structures:.......2007-01-03
I am glad I ordered this. Is a classic weaving book and should be used for a long time
Great Fun.......2006-08-05
I have been weaving my way through this book. It has been a blast. The photographs are beautiful. I have learned many things and am enjoying each structure.
Customer Reviews:
Sensory Overload!.......2002-11-06
I noticed this book when I looked for my old favorite, The New Key To Weaving. I had found so much thorough, technical info there and was eager to replace my copy. Forget Key To Weaving. This book has taken its place on my bookshelf. Two years later, I still can only read a few pages at a time before I dance off to implement the ideas her book stirred up in me.
Bravo, Helen! Thank you for all the detailed photos, numerous drafts, and nuts-and-bolts theory that you provided.
Must-have for the novice weaver, very useful for all.......2000-06-16
Helene Bress' incredible accomplishment in THE WEAVING BOOK can hardly be understated. She has compiled thousands of samples of handweaving that illustrate the basic weave structures, and the myriad variations thereto that make handweaving a lifelong avocation of learning and discovery.
Weaving theory is presented in a clear & straight-forward text. What is the most valuable are the photos of the samples themselves (the weaving the work of a small group of weavers, including Doromay Keasbey, and the photos the work of Allen Bress, the author's son). As a beginning weaver, it is often very hard to visualize a fabric from a draft, and until you learn to do that, drafts are nearly useless. These thousands of samples are presented in a way that makes the relationship between draft and fabric clearer. Not only will a novice find plenty of inspiration here for original projects, but will come away from working with this book better able to understand and productively use the classic pattern books, as well as those books which treat in depth the weave structures introduced here.
A greedy reader (like myself) could wish that the samples were illustrated in color -- the color pages of examples are tantalizing -- but the author and her colleagues wisely understood that color reproduction would have made the book far too expensive. Even with the significant discount available from Amazon.com, THE WEAVING BOOK is still a serious investment. If you are a novice weaver, buy this book before almost any other. If you are an experiecned weaver, there is plenty within its covers to make it a valued reference and idea source.
A Great Resource for Weavers.......2000-01-21
The Weaving Book is one of the most used volumes in my fiber library! Ms Bress illustrates four common threadings on the loom and then demonstrates the myriad possibilites by altering only the treadling and tie-ups. The book has many, many photographic illustrations and is easy to read. A tremendous resource.

Typical Paolini excellence.......2007-05-07
I love this book. I bought it for my kids to give me for Mother's Day. I'm a handspinner and just love this story about Charlie the shepherd who needs a new cloak. He goes through all the steps from shearing his sheep to sewing the finished fabric together into a new cloak. It has great humor and is a fun read.
Superb preschool book!.......2006-12-23
I enjoy dePaola's books very much, but this one I am extra enthusiastic about. I work in a classroom of 3,4 and 5 year olds, and I am responsible for selecting literature for, and reading to, the younger children in the class. Sometimes when I am reading a dePaola book I have to cut some of the narrative to keep their attention. I don't have to do that at all with this book. This is a book that will keep the 3 year old's attention and still offer something to the older children as well. A lot of the charm of this story is the pictures which feature the action outlined in the text as to what Charlie is doing and also clearly represents the agendas of a spunky sheep and craftly mouse. YOung children love to discover these little "surprises" within the illustrations.
Charlie Needs a Cloak.......2006-07-13
Tomie dePaola always writes such good books, that I don't worry if it will be good, I know it will be. I will be using this book to help with a yarn/fiber art unit in class. I have enjoyed reading it and I know my students will like it too.
Great for teaching sequencing...........2005-11-02
While I am a pre-service teacher, the second grade classroom that I am observing is currently working with _Charlie Needs a Cloak_and sequencing. The students are given the prompt of each of Charlie's actions on 'wool' pieces and then the students write 2-3 complete sentences using various punctuation. Also, there is a story within a story, which students (at least these 12 second graders) showed enthusiasm with prediction and sequencing. The story within a story format is one big reason why I am a fan of this book!
from white fleece to red cloak.......2005-06-16
Though it's rated at the pre-school level, I've found Charlie Needs a Cloak to be useful and entertaining for kids up to third grade. In my work as a museum educator, this delightful tale serves as a valuable intro to the world of pre-industrial textile production, especially in colonial America. The illustrations are humorous, which dePaola is famous for. Charlie needs a new cloak, and he takes the reader through the process of making one, from shearing his whimsical sheep, who help him with his work, to weaving, dyeing, and sewing the new garment. Too bad Charlie doesn't notice, as soon as he puts it on, that his favorite sheep is already chewing on his hem!

It is not a travelor's book, rather, it is a wonderful way to get a romantic view of different spaces and decorating. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a glimpse of real-life Ireland.

The book "From Rage to Reason".......2007-05-14
I recieved the book very fast and it was in excellent condition.
Bravo! Janet!.......2004-09-27
for having the courage to tell your story about your rise from the projects of Indianapolis to being a member of a power elite. Yours is a story of struggle, guts and determination to make a name for yourself. Your interracial marriages did create a lot of controversy in the elite, for they don't accept the idea of black/biracial black women marrying elite, upper class nonblack men such as your husband.
You made a name for yourself in modeling early on. I have to give it to you for having kept your face and figure, but that's not all. You have a mind of your own that sometimes conflict with the prevailing views of the establishment, which isn't too accepting of smart, assertive women like you. But then again times has changed.
All I have say is that you rose above it all.
startling.......2004-08-22
This is an autobiography so you'd expect Janet Cohen to present herself in a good light. She doesn't. Instead Cohen comes off as a very bitter, self absorbed woman who doesn't seem to have learned anything over the years.
Janet, you did a great job.......2004-08-18
Janet's book is very excellent, she deserves a standing ovation for a book well written. This book is so interesting and captivating. This is the first time, i have seen someone so clear-cut honest. Janet Cohen is a beautiful woman who deserved all the good things in life. She has broken down racial barriers like Oprah to become of the greatest African-Americans of this era. I strongly recommend this book to people who haven't read it.
Amazing - Her Own Autobiography Makes Her So Unlikeable!.......2004-08-10
This book is so mistitled on two accounts. First, I would agree with the reviewer below; "From Rage to Reason" was for me, too, "From Rage to Disgust." How can anyone who is writing their OWN story come off so nauseatingly unlikeable? The more you read, the more arrogant, self-centered, and disengenuous Janet Langhart Cohen becomes. Maybe it should be "From Rage to Sickenly Manipulative." Second, this is clearly not a book about "My Life in Two Americas." Her story is simply not about the experience of being black in America. Forget that she's white skinned with caucasain features, she is astonishingly and uniquely beautiful. Perhaps, in her case, the two Americas could more adequately be described as the "few privileged with astounding beauty and the rest of us ordinary-looking people." Now, I have a great admiration for beauty and nothing against a woman using it to her best advantage; we should all put our assets to their best use. But this woman has done nothing to help the plight, the image, the future hopes and dreams of anyone but herself. As the old saying goes, for some women beauty is the biggest disadvantage because they have no need or motivation to develope any skills beyond dressing well and flirting when necessary. Janet Cohen has not proved that race has been a disadvantage for her, only that beauty paired with selfish ambition can produce a hollow, grating, selfish personality. Her "blackness" is used as a convenient excuse when she doesn't get her way or people don't like. People don't like her, obviously, because she is unlikeable. This woman is a horrible role model for any young woman, black, white, or whatever.
