Sex and the adult cerebellum have tended to be Nicholson Baker's cherished subjects, and not necessarily in that order. In The Everlasting Story of Nory, however, he turns his literary microscopy in an entirely new direction, exploring the consciousness of a child. Nory, we are told, "was a nine-year-old girl from America with straight brown bangs and brown eyes. She was interested in dentistry or being a paper engineer when she grew up." This future dentist or paper engineer is also ensconced for a year in the English town of Threll, where her family is taking a sabbatical from life in Palo Alto.
Baker's novel is endearing, entertaining, and most of all, accurate. The author recognizes that an authentic nine-year-old is incapable of long, intricate narratives, so he divides Nory's story into short (and comically abrupt) chapters. He never credits Nory with precocious wisdom or insight. Instead, Baker concentrates on exactly how a nine-year-old mind works. There is, for instance, that wonderful literalism, which subjects a cliché to strict, heartbreaking scrutiny: "Nory suspected that the straw that broke the camel's back was an unsensible idea anyway, because first of all, stop and think of that poor camel. How could it happen? Doesn't he have something to say about the situation? Also, camels' backs are pretty strong things. If you've ridden on them, you know that they can support at least two people, if not three."
Nory slowly makes friends at school, where she's exposed to the usual level of childish cruelty. She fills us in on her family and plays with her kid brother, Frank (a.k.a. Littleguy). And for a large portion of the book she regales us with stories, which are short on narrative logic and long on amusing malapropisms. But this compulsive teller of tales worries about how to keep her material straight in her head: "You live your life always in the present. And even in the present, this day, dozens and hundreds of tiny things happen, so many that by the end of the day you can't make a list of them. You lose track of them unless something reminds you." No Nicholson Baker fan can read that rather touching thought without thinking of The Mezzanine and Room Temperature--novels in which the author seemed intent on recording precisely those "dozens and hundreds" of minuscule events. The Everlasting Story of Nory, then, is partially a meditation on what lasts, and what doesn't. "You can't mummify a nice memory in someone's head," Nory announces. You can, however, keep one alive, as Baker has done in this deeply charming and delightful book. --James Marcus

Baker manages to perfectly encapsulate the mind of a nine year old in all its semi-logical, semi-nonsensical glory. Nory feels like a living, breathing child, as do her classmates and younger brother. A beautiful book.
Nicholson Baker is still a great writer.......2005-08-31
The book is about Nory, a nine year old who is a bad speller and tries to get along with her parents, friends and brother while standing up for herself and others. That's really it. I disagree with other reviewers, in that I think Nicholson Baker did an amazing job of making it seem like most, if not all of the story was coming from Nory herself. It doesn't sound like a middle aged man pretending but more like a middle age man who does a great job of creating a book for adults that seems like it could be for kids. Where the book is flawed, and I think this is where others who reviewed this book will agree, is that you just don't really care about Nory or her friends. There's no real interest, and as such it takes forever to read this 200 page book. Nothing is really resolved at the end because there is no progression. It's Nory telling stories, most of which, although clever, are generally uninteresting and not that fun to read. Nicholson Baker tries to put his amazing writing style into a 9 year old and although it works in his prose, it doesn't work in its ability to create a good story. Sure, it's still Nicholson Baker, who I think is the greatest user of the English language, and you should still read this book if you have nothing else to read and are a fan of his work, but it's not important if you don't. You don't miss too much.
A late-middle-age man imagines life as a nine-year-old girl.......2004-09-29
A fan of Nicholson Baker, I was thoroughly disappointed by a book that I had looked forward to reading. Nine-year-old Nory relates to the reader her observations of her life to date. Although the dusk-jacket blurbs would lead the reader to believe that Nory's observations about her parents, her teachers and fellow children will leave the reader laughing out loud, I found that Nory's voice sounded very much like that belonging to a late-middle-age man working hard to imagine life as a nine-year-old girl. For Baker fans, skip this one.
Indeed, Everlasting.......2004-05-10
The everlasting story of Nory starts well. I was hooked to the first pages who offer something unique and different - a good look into the mind of a nine year old girl. It seems that all parents spend time in one stage or another discussing the issue of how their children think... here is a serious effort to answer this question. Although Nory seems at times like a too mature person (with too-good-to be true parents) who spends a lot of time dwelling about "heavy" issues (she is very concerned with the way Achilles mother held him while dipping his body into the river and not - as Nory thinks would have been better, by cradling him in her arms and stepping into the water with him), but also about subjects I am more familiar with from my kids such as problems with other children, nightmares and trying to be "a good girl". All in all Nicholson Baker does give us pretty good directions. However, once the thrill is over, and the appreciation to Nicholson Baker's genius (no sarcasam here) wears out, you are left with a somewhat tedious feeling. This happened to me around middle book where I realized this book is taking me forever to finish and I had to struggle through the rest of the book wishing that something would finally happen or that the book would end already. The story could have been interesting had it centered around Nory's social life at school and the many problems it presents - especially Nory's relations with Pamela, a very unpopular girl which Nory seems to like. These parts and the real life conflict they present are indeed interesting but the story is filled with the many stories Nory invents - which are, to say the truth, not so interesting for an adult. It is like the feeling you have after spending too much time with your kids... you do love them, but sometimes you crave for an adult conversation.

Nicholson Baker is a very original writer, and he excels here at writing about a young girl's observations and fantasies in the third person. The main problem is that the myriad observations-- divided into 54 short excerpts-- fail to advance a plot, although we do get deeper into Nory's head. It just gets very tedious after awhile.
I would recommend this as a book from which to read snippets, but Baker would have done better to write a shorter book, or to have some semblance of a plot. Although the style and characters are quite different, try "Zazie Dans Le Metro" for another, more interesting look at young female adolescense. It's offbeat and ultimately more satisfying.

Snarf doesn't talk like that..........2006-09-27
As a Thundercat fan, I was greatly insulted for each minute that I read this book. I can find something on every page that makes me want to tear this book into peices. Snarf Doesn't talk like a British Incredible Hulk, referring to himself in the third person EVERY OTHER WORD!!! This book made me hate and want to kill Snarf in horrible ways. In fact, I can't even recall what the story was about, because all I could think of throughout the whole story was how much I hated what Fiona Avery had done to my beloved character Snarf. Dammit, she didn't even put "HO" at the end of Loin-O's Thundercat's battle-cry. How detached from the series can you be?!! Just do yourself a favor and save your money for the other ones written someone who can actually write. This is just wrong in every way that wrong can possibly be.

Excellent feminist through-the-mirror-darkly viewpoint........1998-03-17
I am a big fan of Sharon Green's work, and found this series one of her best. Often, my non-feminist friends can't start the series with Book 1 because it deals with a "savage" life from a so-called "male" perspective -- take what you want, fight to keep it, get rid of it when it's no longer convenient/useful. While the sex is great, there is more to Ms. Green's writing than erotica. Nowhere else have I seen a true "education" of thoughts and ideas within a character primarily categorized as a "Xena"-wannabe or a "Gor"-knockoff. Ms. Green deals with profound issues involving comfort vs. fighting for ideals, as well as moralist issues such as being willing to sacrifice oneself for a noble cause. This book is a real "kepper", and as soon as I can get a clean copy, I will be replacing it in my library.

This is a great cook book. I am lossing weight and needed to find a good cook book with lower calories. The food that I have made from this cook book is great. It tastes like regular food. Making splendid treats with splenda.......2007-01-10
A friend of mine gave me this book for Christm,as the year that it first came out. I immediately began using it. Chai tea, hot cocoa, pumpkin muffins, glazed carrots, etc. all became quick favorites. My niece came for a visit and together we would cook up recipes to test. All winners. I sent her a copy for her birthday and she was thrilled. She had asked me to send her some of the recipies, I decided that it was just easier to send her the whole book!
For me, the only negative aspect of some of the recipies is that they are way to spicy (picante). Now I just modify the amount of spices I add and all are happy with the result!

I like this cookbook. I have tried the strawberry lemonade, which was great, and a cheesecake. I look forward to trying more things. It also has the weight watchers points listed which is nice.

This book has a good variety of recipes and is well organized. I also have another book using Splenda which is written by the same author. She covers the benefits of using Splenda very well. It's a great way to get rid of the empty calories in sugar without sacrificing sweet taste.
A Perfect Fit.......2006-01-05
I have been on a moderate carb diet for a few years and was experimenting with recipes that would fit with my exchange diet and carb counting. Splenda had been on the market for only a year and few people knew how to cook with it and gain good results. Enter Marlene Koch into my life. Her recipes from this book were just what the doctor ordered. There is just enough sugar to make the textures in the food work, but the carb count and fat content was "a perfect fit" for my diet needs. Not only that, but every recipe I tried tasted fantastic and this book has allowed me to return classic recipes such as three bean salad, coleslaw, gingerbread and "sugar" cookies back into my diet without guilt or ill effects. I've made many of the recipes in this book and make her "Heavenly Cheesecake" for my holiday table each year.
Thank you Marlene for all your hard work. I'm looking forward to reading and cooking from more of your books!

I had never tracked a dog before. I followed this book step by step and in about 3 months I sucessfully completed my first tracking test and had put a T.D. on my dog. A lot of work is involved but worth every minute when your dog has that title!

This is a great book for anyone interested in the use of china and silverware in the Victorian Era and the functions of each piece. It is also a great guide for antique shopping or junking. I know I have seen some of those odd pieces of china and silver and never knew what they were used for. Now that I do, I can add to my collection with confidence.

The book has numerous Victorian Projects that include a lingerie case, pillow, evening bag, book cover. Terrific color pictures (both close-up and distant) of the projects, nifty stitch instructions, and patterns too! I highly recommend it to crazy quilters and embroiderers alike.

Unfortunately, lighting is one of the last things people consider when planning their home. This publication should go a long way to change that. If you are one of the many people who walk into a dark room and flip on a light switch without giving it much thought, you may want to take a look at this book. If you are planning on building a home, or remodeling an existing structure, this book is an invaluable source of inspiration. With nearly 200 pages of beautiful photos, The Art of Lighting shows what can be accomplished through the use of lights and shadows. Many of the homes featured are high-end custom designs with professionally installed systems. The interiors become spectacular when lit to their best advantage. The Art of Lighting is not a nuts-and-bolts book about lighting. You will not find wiring diagrams or correlated color temperature charts. There are better books that cover those topics (most notably, "Planning & Designing Lighting" by Edward Effron). If, however, if you are looking for decorating ideas, or enjoy well photographed elegant interiors, don't overlook this one.

A MUST have for any art fan.......2005-01-31
I recently purchased Spectrum 9, 10, and 11. These books are absolutely wonderful, and I would recommend them to any artist or fan of fantasy/sci fi art. They are extremely well put together, of high quality (reproduction wise), have a large number and variety of artists, and contain some of the most beautiful works of art I have seen. Some of the subject matter can be disturbing or somewhat sexual in nature (certainly nothing explicit, but not exactly innocent either), so I wouldn't recomend them for the very young (12 or under?) if you are a parent. These books are worth every penny and highly recommended.

This book is like a kick-ass mobile art gallery. Anyone interested in some cool artists with real talent that you can't find in museums or galleries should have this edition on their coffee tables or on their mantles. A visual cornicopia of excellently presented ideas compiled in a book that will have you closely staring at the pages. Really cool.

Not unlike the other titles in the Spectrum series, Spectrum 9 provides a great overview of contemporary fantastic art, the best emerging artists, new trends, and samples of the forever-loved art. The artwork is much better documented with sources listed for further study of fantastic art.
If you've ever admired a cover on a sci-fi book, cool credits in a fantasy movie, or even action figures of your favorite super heroes, this book might be for you. The nice thing about the Spectrum series is that you do not need to reach for a specific volume to look at specific form of art. Each volume offers a pretty even and ,personally I think, good cross section of the current fantastic art and design.
Spectacular, As Usual.......2003-01-14
I have been patiently waiting (OK, maybe not so patiently) since November for Spectrum 9 to be released. Even though I had to wait an extra month and a half, it was well worth the wait. Once again, the Spectrum series provides us with the best in contemporary and fantastic art, and it IS fantastic. Entries range from weird, to gory, to funny, to beautiful. I began this series with Spectrum 8, then bought 7. Unfortunately, the other 6 are out of print (and cost a pretty penny), but these 3 will do. If you like sci-fi/fantasy art, this is the book for you. There's something for everyone, and in my opinion, there is not one bad painting in the whole book. Buy this today - you will get more than your money's worth.

Angela Davis is without question an American national treasure. From her involvement with Black Power in the 1960s to her humanitarian pursuit of prison reform, Davis has always been remarkable for what she does. This reader introduces a new generation of readers to what she says about what she does. Those who have never read her before will be sure to grab other collections (and, of course, the autobiography).
