Book Description

Its been twenty years since Cass Wakefield returned from the Civil War to his hometown in Mississippi, but he is still haunted by battlefield memories. Now, one afternoon in 1885, he is presented with a chance to literally retrace his steps from the past and face the truth behind the events that led to the loss of so many friends and comrades. The opportunity arrives in the form of Casss childhood friend Alison, a dying woman who urges Cass to accompany her on a trip to Franklin, Tennessee, to recover the bodies of her father and brother. As they make their way north over the battlefields, they are joined by two of Casss former brothers-in-arms, and his memories reemerge with overwhelming vividness. Before long the group has assembled on the haunted ground of Franklin, where past and presentthe legacy of the war and the narrow hope of redemptionwill draw each of them toward a painful confrontation. Moving between harrowing scenes of battle and the novels present-day quest, Howard Bahr re-creates this era with devastating authority, proving himself once again to be the preeminent contemporary novelist of the Civil War.

5 out of 5 stars Just an Outstanding Book.......2007-09-09

This is the second one of Bahr's books I have read. I enjoyed The Black Flower, but I think this is the better book. In fact, this is a remarkably good book. Bahr has an uncanny ability to capture what I assume was the whole scene surrounding the Civil War. His accounts of the battles are memorable and his accounts of what must have been going on in the heads of the soldiers is excellent. The book is haunting. He doesn't sugarcoat the realities of the killing and suffering. I recommend it unconditionally not to just Civil War buffs, but to anyone who enjoys getting lost in great literature.

3 out of 5 stars Too much bad language.......2007-09-04

I thought it was a very good read except for the bad language. I would have rated it four stars if not for the cursing. I will read no further books by Howard Bahr.

5 out of 5 stars MEMORY.......2007-08-27

"The Judas Field" is about MEMORY! It's about the power of godawful human conflict to wharp, to mutilate, and ultimately to destroy human lives; the lives of those who have lived through the horror of it and "survived." But survived for what? Survived how? NO ONE who faced combat, who "saw the elephant," emerged from our nation's most horrendous conflict without deep scars that lasted for whatever years remained of his life. Bahr is a master at finding, recording and describing those who made it through and what the survival cost them. His descriptive capacity is superior! When I read his works I keep saying, "Yes, yes, that must have been the way it was." In "Judas field" he gives us alcoholism and drug addiction. He also gives us deeply sympathetic characters who desperately want to do the right thing, to care, to make things right somehow. There were probably lots of young men from Iowa and Indiana who went home to lives essentially unchanged from before the conflict. In the South this was certainly not the case. One in four southern men of military age was dead. Statistically, EVERY man who served in the Southern armies and was not killed was wounded. And the world they came home to was devastated beyond anything Americans have experienced since. McMurty says the South is about memory. He's right. Read Bahr's works to know why. "Black Flower" "The Year of Jubilo" and "Judas Field" will make Southerners of anyone. Even this tranplant.

5 out of 5 stars Bahr's Best to date!.......2007-08-26

Howard continues to best himself! With this publication a new angle is brought out, after the war twenty years on. The vivid descriptions of memories are better than ever. It is as if Bro. Bahr is watching these events unfold while on the firing line himself.

Loyalty, ethos, and the ethereal shadows of the past move as you are absorbed by this work.

5 out of 5 stars First in Vampire PI series.......2007-07-31

PN Elrod's "Jack Fleming, Vampire PI" series is a great read with humour and a fantastic setting in 1930s Chicago with film noir aspects. The story begins with Jack Fleming waking up having crawled out of the sea. No sooner has he staggered to the road when a passing driver clips him with his bumper - clearly on purpose. Jack finds himself in discussion with the car driver and discovers that he is supposed to be dead, killed because he wouldn't tell people where an important list was hidden.

Jack realises pretty quickly that he has become a vampire. Fortunately he knows about the vampire life, having had a vampire girlfriend previously, and he prepares his life accordingly (fetching some of his home earth, finding somewhere safe to sleep the day, feeding from the stockyards). Elrod gives her own particular selection of traits to vampires - garlic, crosses and invitations into rooms don't work, disappearing, extra strength and glamour do. What's fun about this story is that we learn about Jack's skills and nature as he does and because he's clearly not evil, just a pleasant and friendly ex-reporter who wants to get to the bottom of his own death.

Chicago is a city of gangsters and other dodgy types in this story and Jack falls foul of several of them. What's great about Jack as a character is that if he were fully human he would have died multiple times as he really isn't quite up to dealing with these characters. However his vampire nature gets him out of a lot of sticky situations and also enables him to have a great time scaring some of the people who were involved in his death. Assisted by the trusty Charles Escot, a brave private agent and sometime actor, the two of them try to find out why Jack was killed and what was on the list. In the course of their investigations Jack meets Bobbi, girlfriend to one of the gangsters and a surprisingly phlegmatic person who seems able to cope with his vampiric nature.

There are a lot of amusing jokes and allusions to various books and films which went over the head of this relatively young English reader but that didn't matter as the story was always enjoyable. The best parts are when Jack is 'haunting' his killers but the fun is interspersed with some serious moments as he slowly begins to remember all that they did to him and to come to terms with his new nature.

This is an excellent first story in the series and Jack is a great new character, both as a vampire and also as a slightly hapless investigator.

4 out of 5 stars Great Vampire Noir.......2006-04-03

Since my return to reading, as far as vampire novels are concerned, I've had one hit and one miss: "Pandora's Game" by Christopher Andrews was a big hit, while "Minion" by L. A. Banks was a big miss. I am pleased to say that "Bloodlist" by P. N. Elrod falls closer to the "Pandora's Game" side of the line.

While Andrews gave us a modern day vampire tale with some chapters flashing back to hundreds of years ago, Elrod has given us a vampire tale set against the backdrop of a 1930's noir detective story. Told in first person POV, the main character, Jack Flemming, is technically an out of work reporter, but the mood and plot are handled as though he were Philip Marlow.

Set up as the first in an on going series, "Bloodlist" covers Flemming's rise as a vampire, his exploration of his new found powers, and, with his last few living days missing from his memory, his attempts to solve his own murder. There is a storyline that is part subplot, part back story involving the woman who made him into a vampire, but that gets little attention here.

My only complaint would be in regards to one of the vampire's powers, or limitations. We're shown that crosses, garlic, and bullets do not affect him, while wood, sunlight, and running water do. Now, I've read before about vampires "unable to cross running water" or "being vulnerable to running water." Indeed, in this book, the presence of and proximity to running water is addressed repeatedly (including an unexplained phenomenon where the vampire's presence in a row boat makes it more difficult to row?).

But at the beginning of the book, he awakens having been washed ashore. Wouldn't the large body of moving water, which DOES affect him at other times in the book, have destroyed him even as he was created as a vampire? This element is addressed a LITTLE bit near the end, but for me, it was too little too late by that point, as I had spent too many pages thinking of it as a plot hole.

But otherwise, Elrod handles the story with impressive skill, and I look forward to reading more Jack Flemming books in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Vampires and Mystery, Wonderful!.......2005-08-22

I have read PN Elrod's 'The Vampire Files' many, many times. The series is a wonderful and lively one that hooked me becasue I like vampires, and snagged me into loving mystery stories. I wish these sold in hardcover, or better yet, a movie!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Vampire Adventure.......2004-07-02

Book Review by C. Douglas Baker

If you like comic book quality action/adventure with a bit of the supernatural thrown in you will like Bloodlist, Book One of The Vampire Files. Bloodlist cannot really be considered part of the horror genre because, really, it isn't that scary. That is unless an inept vampire getting riddled with bullet holes and blundering into trouble constantly constitutes "horror".

Set in a gangster ridden Chicago, circa late 1930's, Jack Fleming, an unemployed reporter, is murdered. Jack comes back as a vampire as a result of an extended affair with a vampire, Maureen. He likens vampirism to a disease that is not contagious and is hard to catch or "we would be up to our armpits in vampires". The mysterious Maureen has inexplicably disappeared, leaving an obvious opening for the next book in the series. But I digress. Jack has been murdered by gangsters but his post-transformation amnesia leaves him with few clues as to why he was murdered; so he snoops around. Along the way he runs into a personable private eye, Charles Escott. Together they try to unravel the mystery, rather clumsily if the truth be known. Both are rather worse for the wear by the end of the adventure. And the mystery is really solved by....well, lets not spoil it.

Bloodlist certainly is not great literature but it is rather fun. Characterization is surprisingly well done and while the plot is not exceptional it does keep the reader's interest. If you want a relaxing read where little mental energy has to be expended and the story is both humorous and fast paced, then check out Bloodlist. On the other hand, if you are still searching for the next coming of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles steer well clear.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire vs the Chicago mobsters.......2003-06-18

Bloodlist is the first in a series of Jack Flemming, a reporter/writer turned Vampire in the midst of the post prohibition times of Chicago. Although Capone is in prision, mobsters still rule the streets, run the illegal gambling halls and have the cities polititions in their back pockets. Turf wars continue, revenge is a household word, and the various gangs are still as greedy for money and power as ever. They kill when they have to and know how to work the system. The one thing they've never come across is a real live Vampire.

Jack Flemming, only one day in Chicago has his life totally turned around and due to incidents in his past history turns into one of the undead. Jack's Vampire powers are somewhat different than those you will find in most of the other books featuring Vampires, and it is these very powers that make this book as entertaining as it is.

P.N. Elrod provides a nice blend of gangsters, mystery, violence, comedy, and the supernatural powers of a Vampire. The book moves along quickly and is action packed starting from the first paragraph. This is an easy series to get hooked on.

          Book Description

          R. H. Barlow (1918-1951) was in every way a remarkable individual. An enthusiast of fantasy and horror fiction since childhood, he came in touch with H. P. Lovecraft when he was only 13. He was already attempting to write short fantasy tales, and Lovecraft took considerable pains to tutor Barlow in the principles of fiction writing. This volume, which for the first time gathers Barlow's substantial body of weird fiction and poetry, contains all six of Barlow's collaborations with Lovecraft, including such celebrated works as "The Battle That Ended the Century" and "The Night Ocean" (which new research has shown to be almost entirely Barlow's work). Barlow went on to write superb short stories without Lovecraft's assistance, including "A Dim-Remembered Story," "The Root-Gatherers," and "Return by Sunset." In the 1940s, when Barlow moved to Mexico (where he became a noted anthropologist), he turned to poetry, producing such scintillating volumes as Poems for a Competition (1942) and View from a Hill (1947). Barlow's life was tragically cut short by suicide, but this volume shows that he had already fulfilled the promise of his early work by producing tales of a substance, maturity, and depth that few of Lovecraft's colleagues could match. The gathering together of his collected weird fiction and poetry is an event that should be welcomed by all lovers of the weird and fantastic.

          3 out of 5 stars A Fine Poet.......2004-04-14

Barlow's best poetry is terrific. His tributes to Lovecraft are quite moving. The stories in this book, however, are juvenalia and for the most part not very good. The one exception is "The Night Ocean," a subtle and memorable fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent gourmet recipes for a pressure cooker!.......2007-04-23

The recipes in this cookbook are amazing, producing very well-balanced and complicated-tasting dishes. The Risotto with Porcini Mushrooms and Escarole is one of our favorites. To get these great results, the recipes in this book can be somewhat lenthy, complicated, and/or require unusal ingredients. When we don't have the time (or we're fresh out of escarole), we balance this book with the much simpler (both in terms of taste and preparation) recipes from The Pressure Cooker Cookbook by Toula Patsalis. The Pressure Cooker Gourmet contains a great collection of recipes we never would have been able to prepare before -- although they sometimes can be difficult, the dishes that result are well worth the effort!

          3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-10-02

I have been cooking "from scratch" for more than 30 years and own more than 50 cookbooks, including most of the great classics. Favorite cookbook authors I return to again and agin include Julia Child, Craig Claiborn, Christopher Kimball, Diana Kennedy, Ruth Reichl, Irene Kuo, Paul Prudhomme and Irma Rombauer (& her descendents). I love ethnic food, gourmet food and great American regional home cooking. The best cookbooks provide detailed techniques and enough information so a confident cook can develop variations based on personal taste and available ingredients. I was dissappointed to find that this book fails in that regard. I purchased it hoping it would be like Barbara Kafka's Microwave Gourmet (still the best on its subject), laying out what this kitchen utensil is best suited for and honestly explaining what it can and cannot do well. Instead, the author seems to believe the pressure cooker should be able to tackle any task. For example, she includes several recipes for items like seafood that are best cooked quickly, but leaves out foods that benefit from long, slow cooking, like soups, sauces and stews. There are only two barebones recipes for stock, one for beef stew (Bouef Bourgiugnon), and a few for odd soups and sauces (like a "blonde onion soup" but no French Onion Soup, a lentil soup but no other legume soups, a Bolognese sauce that dumps raw beef and tomatoes in all at once in violation of all principals I have learned), and several recipes for things like custard and cheesecake. There are unusual, tasty recipes in here, and excellent directions on timing, but I agree with another reviewer who warns that her temperature recommendations are way too high.

The new wave of excluding aversives and training with positive reinforcement is rapidly proving itself to not only be the method of choice for adding behavior, but now, as evidenced by trainers like Jean Donaldson, the method of choice for getting rid of behavior, especially emotionally charged behavior like aggression. If you are of the school of thought that "treats are fine for training tricks but I have a dog that bites," you owe yourself a serious study of the techniques and theory in "Dogs Are From Neptune".

Nowhere else is the case made more strongly for positive reinforcement training for the resolution of serious problems, not simply from the standpoint of dog and handler-friendliness, but from that of efficacy and deep, permanent change.

"Dogs Are From Neptune" draws from real cases to provide clear, step-by-step advice for troubleshooting problems from obedience proofing stumpers to serious biters and fighters. Many of the owners presenting histories had made the rounds of trainers and behaviorists with no improvement prior to submitting their cases.

There is a comprehensive and enlightening discussion of the finer points of classical and operant conditioning and why the former may indeed "over-ride" the latter when dealing with aggression. Donaldson has treated innumerable aggressive dogs and has an excellent ability to tease out key features in each case history. Her description of "Suburban Dog Syndrome" rings true for dog people everywhere. Perhaps most ground-breaking are her discussions of dog bullying, fighting and defensive aggression.

The first three sections cover aggression, towards strangers, family members and other dogs. The aggression to strangers section contains a case of "socialization omission," to men specifically; a more globally aggressive dog with many triggers, a dog on the comeback trail from a bad beginning in life, a therapy dog with a good history that begins growling at certain people and the case of an exasperated family who feel they have a genetic misfit.

The aggression to family members section, entitled "Resource Guarding" gives step-by-step plans for and background on food and object possessiveness as well as a beautifully structured treatment protocol for a dog that will not allow routine handling.

In the dog-aggression section, the topics are reactivity to proximity, chronic fighting in a dog park, a dog that begins growling after a couple of bad experiences at class, a how-to on handling a dog that bullies other dogs, understanding inter-bitch aggression, the owner's role in dog to dog aggression problems and an extremely convincing case for the use of food in the treatment of aggression.

The second half of the book involves cases of behavior and obedience problems and anxiety-related disorders. Counter-surfing, dirt, stool and garbage eating, amusing and informative cases of barking, pushy play-biting in a full-grown dog, sofa-elimination and its likely motives and a mounting Labrador bitch round out the behavior problems section.

The obedience problems range from new insights into garden variety presentations such as pulling on leash, heeling, jumping up and controlling dogs off leash to the more esoteric context-specific stay-breaking, obedience-ring sluggishness and the relative merits of electric shock and non-aversive approaches to undoing a squirrel hunter.

The fear and anxiety section encompasses both mild and severe separation anxiety, anxiety about traffic in general and about getting into cars and a fascinating case of a dog with Addison's disease who must avoid all stress but whose handler would like to continue training in obedience.

4 out of 5 stars Dogs are from Neptune - Good Training Information.......2007-04-04

After struggling through The Culture Clash, I found Dogs are from Neptune to be a much easier, more outlined reading experience. The book is organized around problem areas and while much of the training recommendations are repeated, it still gives the reader clear cut, easy to follow training suggestions. I have used the book as a resource guide many times when working with my cattle dog foster dogs and coaching other foster families. Dog owners looking for a quick fix may be dismayed at the amount of training she recommends to solve dog behavior issues. However, I have found her suggestions to work well. I still recommend The Culture Clash as a necessary read along with Dogs are from Neptune, however expect this book to be much easier to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Highly practical advice, entertainingly written.......2006-11-10

Jean Donaldson is one of the world's foremost experts on how dogs learn and how to teach them. Her methods are humane, based on the well-studied science of behaviorism, not stressful or harmful to dogs, and very, very effective.

The gems in this book are practical solutions to the everyday problems dog owners face, with just enough information thrown in so that dog owners can understand why their old methods didn't work, why these methods do work, and how to apply the principles to other situations.

Ms. Donaldson's most famous book, Culture Clash, goes into much more detail about the learning theory, how dogs think, and why we so often use the worst possible methods to train them. It is less a "how to" book than a "why" book. For people whose dogs are giving them fits, Dogs are from Neptune is the book to start with. Then, follow up with Culture Clash for a deeper understanding.

As a dog trainer specializing in behavior problems, I often recommend Neptune to my clients and they love it!

          5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2006-11-10

Easy to read, clear and sensible advice given in response to 'real life' scarios and dog problems.

3 out of 5 stars An Advice Column for Dog Issues.......2006-01-16

And, like all advice columns, sometimes you get an answer to your question, and sometimes you don't. There is a lot of good information on behaviorism buried in the recommendations...but sometimes you have to read about a completely unrelated training issue to find out about things like desensitization and counter-conditioning. If you have the time, definitely read entries on more than just the issue that interests you.

There is also a bit more jargon in here than I thought was strictly necessary - if you don't have the concepts of behaviorism and learning theory down, you probably need to read another book before this one. Try such gems as Sophia Yin's "How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves," which introduces the concepts *first,* then shows you how to apply them. Also check out anything by Patricia McConnell, who not only knows her stuff, but knows how to teach it.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book on how to teach/train difficult dogs.......2004-11-16

If you liked Ms Jean Donaldson's first book "Culture Clash" - you will like "Dogs are From Neptune" ... In fact, I would suggest that this book is a necessary follow-up.

"Dogs are From Neptune" is written in Ms Donaldson's distinct and forthright style ... The author is clear in her views and sure of her methods ... The reader can either agree or disagree but there is little grey where the author is concerned ...

That said - Ms Donaldson writes in an incisive way, expressing her thoughts in a manner that makes for easy reading ...

"Dogs are From Neptune" is a collection of case studies ... dealing with "difficult" and "problem" dogs - dogs with whom the more traditional training methods may not work so well ...

Together with Patricia B. McConnell's books, "Dogs are From Neptune" make essential reading for any owner/trainer interested in or needing to learning how to use positive training methods to "re-condition" a dog with difficult temperament or bad habits, ranging from counter surfing, food & object possession to the more serious issue of dogs that bully, dogs who are difficult to handle and dogs exhibiting nervous or defensive aggression ... The Editorial Review above provides a good summary of the areas covered in the book.

I found the use of case studies particularly the details provided - most useful ... by providing background to the "difficulty" faced by the respective dog and its owner/trainer ... the book allowed me to appreciate & understand with greater clarity the intention & purpose behind the methods used and suggested by Ms Jean Donaldson ...

Essentially, the book format adopted by the author, brings meat to the bones of training ...

And it doesn't take long for the reader to realise, that while the case studies are by their very nature specific to each case ... Ms Donaldson's methodology, rational and style of training & teaching a dog - can easily be adapted/modified to meet the range of difficulties and issues an individual owner/trainer may face with his/her own dogs.

The book emphasises and teaches why it is so important for every owner/trainer to first understand basic dog behaviour, instinct & psychology and how using such knowledge & understanding in the teaching/training of our dogs reduces frustration, stress & trauma to both owner/trainer & dog, and increases our chances of success.

Most important, the author teaches us how to maintain through all difficult times, the essential bond of trust between our dogs & us.

All in all ... the book is detailed and very sufficient ... A very good read and a worthwhile buy ...

                              Book Description

All Our Kin is the chronicle of a young white woman's sojourn into The Flats, an African-American ghetto community, to study the support system family and friends form when coping with poverty. Eschewing the traditional method of entry into the community used by anthropologists -- through authority figures and community leaders -- she approached the families herself by way of an acquaintance from school, becoming one of the first sociologists to explore the black kinship network from the inside. The result was a landmark study that debunked the misconception that poor families were unstable and disorganized. On the contrary, her study showed that families in The Flats adapted to their poverty conditions by forming large, resilient, lifelong support networks based on friendship and family that were very powerful, highly structured and surprisingly complex.

Universally considered the best analysis of family and kinship in a ghetto black community ever published, All Our Kin is also an indictment of a social system that reinforces welfare dependency and chronic unemployment. As today's political debate over welfare reform heats up, its message has become more important than ever.

I was made to read this book for my anthro class. It was interesting to read about teh family situations, I read all of this book. This book contains a lot of diagrams and charts, so there is even less text to read. A little outdates perhaps though!

                              4 out of 5 stars Carol B. Stack isn't as boring as I thought.......2001-11-04

By looking at the cover.. you'd think this was the most boring book available at the bookstore. I dreaded reading this when it was assigned to my Anthropology course.. however when I finally got around to reading it is insightful and interesting. It brought up facts that I've seen around me but failed to recognize as part of a culture.

One question I do pose though, when the family which inherits a large sum of money decides to share it among the poor community. Wouldn't the community be better off if that one family decided to move out of poverty, enabling the poor community to become smaller and thus have more items being able to rotate within the community? Eventually the community can become richer because of this instead of dragging those around them down.

                              Interesting book..

This book was assigned reading for an introductory anthropology course, however, once I started reading the book, I simply was unable to put it down. This is one of the most enlightening books I have ever read, detailing every aspect of working poor African Americans in the 60's. Carol Stack immersed herself in this culture and was able to learn all aspects of their daily lives and convey to the reader a vivid and detailed portrait of truly difficult lives of a group of people that make up only 1% of African Americans in this country. As a white woman, this book was especially enlightening to truly understand a completely foreign culture. This should be required reading for all.
