    Book Description

A story of familial and national discord, conciliation, and redemption, The Linwoods is perhaps the major work of one of the leading writers of early American literature. Set during the American Revolution, Catharine Sedgwick's last historical romance addresses issues of virtuous citizenship, civic identity, and the political development of the nation. The primary narrative thread tells the story of two families: the Linwoods, who are loyalists, and the Lees, who are revolutionaries. Much of the novel narrates the transformation of the Linwood children, especially the heroine, Isabella, from Tory to Rebel. In the process, Isabella not only rebels against British control of the colonies, but challenges the institution of slavery, gender norms, and patriarchal authority. Disguise, intrigues of Rebel and Tory spies, cross-racial and cross-gender passing, as well as cases of mistaken identity not only make for a compelling read, but also foster an anti-aristocratic skepticism of surface appearances and external markers of virtue and identity that resonated with the rhetoric of Jacksonian democracy.

        Book Description

There are new methods of learning, new concepts to be tried, but the basic core of physics remains a constant in an ever-changing world. Mathematical Methods for Physics is the bridge that brings these two worlds together. With supplemental material such as graphs and equations, Mathematical Methods for Physics comes together to create a strong, solid anchor for first year students. Dr. H. W. Wyld has lectured on this subject for years and has put together his first-year graduate physics course in this accessible book so students, eager to venture down this road, may be well equipped to learn the basics of physics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Summary of Relevant Mathematics.......2006-08-16

Mathematical Methods for Physics, by H.W. Wyld (MMFP) is a very lovely, reasonably inexpensive review of the mathematics that underlies much of modern physics through the introductory graduate level, especially (elliptical) partial differential equations, complex variables and integral techniques, and special functions. The book is in lecture note style, which makes it compact and readable, compared to encyclopedic textbooks in mathematical physics such as Morse and Feshbach or Arfken, or (in a more mathematical vein) Hilbert and Courant that cover much of the same ground.

The book provides excellent support for graduate electrodynamics, graduate quantum mechanics, and related or similar courses with a high PDE content or intense usage of e.g. Green's functions, delta functions, Bessel (or other hypergeometric) functions, and sundry special functions or integrals. It omits any treatement (deliberately) of probability and statistics or actual applications from e.g. quantum field theory or truly advanced physics.

I have used this book personally for many years for many purposes -- to support research in multiple scattering theory, to teach graduate electrodynamics, to find quick and straightforward derivations of key e.g. Green's function relations or integral relations. Its derivational nature -- most of the lecture note style content is systematic derivation and exposition of the essential components of e.g. separation of variables and solution of the various resulting ODEs -- make it especially suitable as a deskside reference for physicist and student alike, or even as a textbook or auxiliary reference in a mathematical physics course.

MMFP is a classic, and while it was REALLY a bargain fifteen years ago at $16 (a typical price) it still isn't a bad deal priced in the $50's.

3 out of 5 stars Not Wyld enough?.......2001-07-06

"Book of the Wyld" left me with mixed feelings. The book did contain some interesting and useful information; all the new rules would add just the right amount of flavor to any Werewolf story. Unfortunately, this book left me wanting for more; I don't think it was as good as the two previous books about the Wyrm and the Weaver. "Book of the Wyld" could have definitely use some more work, but I think it is worth having in the end if you want add more the Wyld element to your stories.

4 out of 5 stars The Third Member of the Triad Exposed........2001-06-22

" and the Wild was off picking it's toes or something." This the general stereo type I held of The Wyld. Yes it's the fountain of creation, but it had not been given the personification that the other members of the triad had.

        Well no more.

The down side of this book: It tries to explain the unexplainable.

The Up Side: It gives insight to what is often the most misunderstood element of the WereWolf game. The book has a good selection of Wyld Fetishes and a couple (2) Rites that can work as good background material. The selection of Wyld spirts is good (20 pages worth, and the Gorgans), and can act as excelent additions to any game (be forwarned some are reprints though). It also incluedes a section on The Storm Eater, if any one was wondering more about it, you'll find some answers. The addition of "thresholds" is also something new to me.

And finaly the warning "The Wild is a doble Edged Sword." Under this topic there is a good section explaining the chaos that is The Wyld. As well as an discusion on insainity (The freind of Chaos) and how close association wiht the Wyld can lead your characters to the depths of madness, and how to deal with it as a storyteller, and player.

All in all a good addition to the White Wolf line-up.

On a Galactic Mission from God

Here begins an exciting new epic adventure by Jack L. Chalker, a favorite of science fiction fans for years!

When the wormholes mysteriously failed and the Great Silence fell across a third of humanity's interstellar civilization, it was up to the Church to tie together what remained. As had happened long before, during the Middle Ages, faith kept hope alive in a new Dark Age for mankind.

Ishmael Hand, one of the Church's "Prophets" or cyborg scouts, comes across a system with a gas giant and three habitable moons, matching the description of the fabled star system of the Three Kings, an El Dorado long sought by prospectors across the galaxy. Like most Prophets, Hand is not completely sane; he disappears after his final message -- which does not include the location of the system.

Centuries later, Doctor Karl Woodward, preacher and leader of the starship The Mountain, brings the Word to a lost colony of farmers on an uncharted world, and discovers that saving their souls is the least of his problems. A stranded crew of space pirates has terrorized the peaceful villagers for decades. Now their captain holds Woodward's crew hostage as well. And he wants The Mountain...

4 out of 5 stars Not bad - a good start to an interesting series.......2004-03-22

I'll admit up front I have never written a book, I am a consumer not a producer of books. I acknowledge the fact that good ideas and great stories are hard to come by. I'll also acknowledge that in art there are themes and patterns that are unique to an artist and make up distinctive and recognizable styles. However I expect this more in terms of styling than story line. Having read a ton of Chalker (since I was 12) there are times when his themes though could be construed as bordering on the lack of original ideas. I wouldn't exactly characterize this book in that vein, but I did notice at least one simliarity, namely the setup of planetary system which three inhabitable worlds was similar to his The Four Lords of the Diamond series (which I highly reccomend). However I can't fault him for that entirely, just noting a thematic similarity.

Regardless, its clear Chalker sets out to write a series, and this book largely sets up the books to come, but I found that over all I enjoyed the book. The major story lines centers on a evangelical Christian group proslytizing colonial outpost worlds that have been cut off from contact since the "Great Silence". I was worried that Chalker would use this as a means to grind an ax against religion in general, and was pleasantly surprised to find not only a fairly balanced account, but an exploration of faith in the face of doubt and the individualism of worship juxtaposed against congregational preaching.

I am looking forward to finishing the series, and am glad that the other two books have already been published and I won't have to wait for publication to finish the series.

                  3 out of 5 stars Good Start.......2000-09-15

Chalker is a great writer and doesn't let up with this book. Although B's Serpent is clearly written to introduce characters and the worlds of 'The Three Kings' it is a compelling story in its own right. I would have liked to see more character development. Perhaps because Chalker is introducing characters who will play vital roles in future novels, we do not truly learn to fully empathize with very many in this introductory novel. Pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars Chalker at "fair".......2000-08-03

There's excellent, good, fair, mediocre, poor, and gawdawful.

This one rates a "fair." It's the first book in what is clearly going to be a series of either three or four books, and each one is patently going to deal with the exploration and mysteries of a treasure-trove system called "the Three Kings." This system contains three worlds named either after the Three Magi who brought gifts to the infant Jesus, or "Inferno", "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso."

Chalker essentially spends the entire book doing the background for "How Our Heroes Got Into This Mess." I found the middle so tedious and strung out to fill pages that I nearly abandoned the book at that point. I persevered right up to the massively unsatisfying ending, which essentially amounted to saying "OK, that's the background, I'll start the *story* in the next volume." I was not amused.

I suspect that what I'm going to do is wait for the *rest* of the series to appear and then read the other volumes as a group, assuming Chalker doesn't tedious them out again just to fill a length requirement. However, my personal take is that I'll wait for them all in paperback before I start.

Chalker is justly famous for the richness of his creations. The "Well World" saga is as rich as the Bayeux Tapestry, and the "Four Lords of the Diamond" a Bokhara Carpet. This is a throw rug, and I think Chalker's fans deserved better.

1 out of 5 stars Recipes are bland.......2007-09-01

I own this book and the recipes are bland. Most have salt and pepper as the main seasoning. This book also lacks continuity. What i mean is that each recipe seems to have a unique ingredient. So i cant just stock up on basics and prepare several meals from that. Each time i go to prepare a meal there is some new ingredient which i dont have and now have to buy.

Also some of the recipes arent "extremely low carb". One recipe was 10 effective carbs (ie. net carbs) per small serving and about 25 carbs total. My normal portion size was like 40 net carbs!

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2007-05-08

Those who gave this a good review must not have tried any of the recipes.

The book title says extreme lo-carb meals on the go. It is none of these things.

A lot of the recipes contain low carb breads, pastas and tortillas which is fine if you have no weight to lose.

The book promises fast recipes but tells you in the introduction that to the author fast means that the recipes can be cooked in less than an hour. Many of the recipes require that you prep ingredients in advance, the author calls "make ahead".

Many of the recipes call for expensive, hard to find substitutions for sugar, wheat, and syrups.

The only good recipes in the book, which were few and far between, I already had from free, online, low carb sites. (I saw two recipes out of the whole book that I would try and already had seen them online.)

A huge disappointment and I was very excited by the reveiws given so I thought this would be a good resource for me.

Save your money. Search online for the same recipes without the expensive ingredient substitutes.

5 out of 5 stars Alternative Pet Care for Everyone.......2007-06-12

This book is a constantly used handbook for me. I bought this copy to replace the one that I have given away most recently. It is wonderful to be able to help your pet feel better, in addition to what your vet can do, with relatively inexpensive remedies available at the health food store and with accupressure which also helps you bond with your pet. I was even able to get remarkable results from an inexpensive & common TCM patent remedy for my dog who had great difficulty moving her hindquarters after a life-threatening infection. it worked within hours!

5 out of 5 stars Technical, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.......2007-05-07

I bought this book on the recommendation of an integrative vet I know. It does throughly explain TCM, but if you aren't familar with TCM, I would recommend having someone help explain it to you. Some of the info in the book can be used without reading in depth and I used some of the techniques to ease stiffness in pets right away. I haven't pick it up much because it isn't a "light read", at least to me- not a book to read to past time. It is through, probably one of the best layperson books for animal Traditional Chinese Medicine. The price is really good, too, and the book is almost 400 pages.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Information.......2007-03-13

This was a wonderful and interesting book. I loved learning how Chinese Medicine applies to our pets. I have gotten much knowledge from this and have tried some of the techniques. They work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Really liked this book.......2007-01-03

This book shows the pictures I really needed, besides the explanation of where and how to find the points. It tells what the points are used for, and I am very happy with the book. I have used some of the points to keep my dog alive, she has Systemic Lupus, and had gotten to the point of not eating at all, I used some of the points to stimulate her appatite, then several more groups to stimulate her stomach, spleen, liver, and kidneys, etc. I had another dog with S.L.E. and she died because she had no hunger, and she was stopped up so she couldn't eliminate. So far this book has helped in both cases. I also use energy (Reiki-Do) and others energies, but that's another story. It all works together so far. My dog is getting elderly though, so don't know how much longer we have, but this book has helped to make her life much better WITHOUT harmful drugs (my other dog had the drugs and lasted only 11 months). Dog has been in remission on several occassions so far, without drugs and we are coming up on 11 months with her. Keeping our fingers crossed and am not yet using the book to its fullest.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-06

A very good, informative read. Sadly, it arrived the day my dog died. Wish I'd ordered it the first time I came across it.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time and Money.......2003-12-22

The photography in this book is of such poor quality that it is below "crime scene" standards. What a disappointment. I collect advertising paper weights and expected to see examples in colors and detail that would enlighten and entertain. This is a rich topic presented poorly.

I was particularly disturbed to see the terrible, murky poorly lit photographs. The author should have wondered why the photos looked so unrepresentative of the original pieces. It isn't just poor printing (that is so as well) but the lighting of this difficult reflective subject is low grade. Any good pro "tabletop" photographer could have made these items sing. In this case, they have croaked.

Also, it is apparent that the prices of the items are badly out of date, reflecting those of the early 1990's at best. In today's active paperweight market, these prices are just not representative. Any visit to eBay will confirm this.

In short, this "guide" isn't much of anything and certainly doesn't offer the crisp detail of images or information that one would expect for this price.

If I had seen this in a bookstore, I would have laid it back on the pile. I wish I could get my money back.

This subject matter of this book has long been overdue in the collecting world. Until now very little had been published on Victorian advertising paperweights. This is certainly one of the most under appreciated and overlooked niches of collecting advertising memorabilia. The book is jammed with pictures of hundreds upon hundreds of examples. Many of the paperweights pictured are so rare that only one or two copies have been found. I have been collecting since the 1970s. I wish this had been published twenty-five years ago. This book is a visual feast for the novice or the experienced collectors alike.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Nice Volume On Ad Paperweights !!.......2001-12-15

A brand new year 2002 delight of a book featuring 192 pages filled with very large, outstanding, beautiful, sharp full color photos to delight any ad paperweight collector. There are few collectibles books whose photography and printing surpass this guide. Collectors will be in awe of this work. There is a nice introduction to the collectible, a list of manufacturers, and a section on "questionable" paperweights. The book covers glass, celluloid, figurals and others. Pricing is current. A beautiful, beautiful book.

                        Book Description

In his bestselling Every Farm Tells a Story, Jerry Apps brought color and detail to the dreams so many of us have of simple rural life. Here, in his signature style, he spins warm-hearted tales about growing up on a Midwestern dairy farm in the 1940s--stories that make his country year our own.

Wearing his hard-earned wisdom lightly, Apps tells a tale for each month of the year in the heart of the country, and adds aphorisms and the occasional recipe for good measure. We skate with him on a frozen pond on a moonlit night. We watch him drive the hired man’s Model T touring car at the age of 10, recover from polio by driving a tractor during disking season, and learn to ride bareback on a pony named Ginger. Whether shooting off firecrackers on the Fourth of July or suffering through “potato vacation” or overcoming stage fright at the annual Christmas program, Apps is a delightful companion, teaching us a gentle lesson as he learns. By turns witty and profound, his book reaffirms our nation’s rural heritage.

                        Book Description

Introduce children to the magic of using herbs for healing, cooking, and nature crafts and inspire a lifelong interest in the natural world.

                        • Designed especially for children ages five to ten.

                        • A hands-on book for children, filled with fun, easy-to-follow activities.

Walking the World in Wonder covers the medicinal and magical uses of sixty-seven common herbs. Each herb playfully introduces itself and talks about its habitat and many uses. With fun, easy-to-follow activities, herbalist Ellen Evert Hopman teaches children basic herbal skills and invites them to make a sunflower seed mosaic, sew a catnip-filled mouse, and dig for Jerusalem artichoke roots. The book also includes simple recipes that children can use, with adult supervision, to treat minor ailments--peppermint tea to soothe a troubled tummy or horse chestnut salve to heal a scraped knee. Children gain a sense of self-sufficiency and awe for the earth's treasures by eating wild nettle greens, sprinkling a sandwich with nasturtium flowers, making strawberry honey, and learning to season food with dill they've gathered themselves. Parents and teachers will appreciate how these earth-centered activities are placed within a broader social and environmental context. Sixty-seven full-color photographs enable children, parents, and teachers to identify these herbs during walks and field trips. Walking the World in Wonder gives children a direct and joyous experience of their connection to the natural world and inspires a lifelong interest in their own health and that of the planet.

I really love this book. It has real photos of the plants making them easy to identify. Gives a nice amount of informations and something you can do with each plant. Plus which season to find the plant in!

                        5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book!.......2004-06-10

This is definitely a must have book for any family who does herbal medicine- Pagan or not! I was so excited to see the Wheel of the Year described. Each description is in very easy to read language for the children, yet offers valuable information. Plainly put, the author trusts the children's intelligence, and doesn't dumb it down for them. Many simple recipes for remedies and treats are included in the descriptions, as well as lore. My only problem with this book is that there aren't more pictures of each plant in various stages. Some of the pictures offer only a flowering shot of the arial parts. Still, with a parent's help the children will have no problem seeing that they are indeed the plants from the book. The pictures offered are full page beautiful shots. So, it's not really much of a complaint- more of a suggestion in case there are any future editions. :) BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect First Herbal for a Child.......2003-10-29

The author begins with some good information on practices of collecting, use and identification, and then proceeds with a nice introduction to the Wheel of the Year complete with the popular festival names (Samhain, Yule, etc.)

My kids (boys, ages 5 and 8) love the full-color illustrations of easy-to-find herbs. This is truly written to be used by a child (though adults will find it enchanting as well) which is exactly what I needed. I have plenty of my own adult versions of herbals and wanted something that my children could call their own and use on their own.

An interesting twist is the organization of the herbs. The herbs are grouped into four seasons, the season they would most commonly be found, and the chapters begin with Autumn, the start of the Wheel of the Year. Living in Florida, we are less likely to be finding that exactly useful; but we do enjoy seeing how they are usually found in the more northern areas of the nation and will enjoy that feature on our travels to visit family.

                          Book Description

Jeanine McMullen was a BBC producer in London when she went to Wales on assignment. There she fell in love--with Wales, its people, and most of all with the farm that on impulse she decided to buy."Magical writing about animals and the country scene with glorious, gusting humor. I loved every word. Jeanine McMullen's book is absorbing, touching and funny and I found something inspiring in her zestful acceptance of life." --James Herriot

I found this book in a tiny bookshop in San Francisco and bought it as a present for my husband. On the flight home I opened it and was immediately enthralled. After I finished it I ran out and bought the 2 sequels. If you love animals or dream of a "simple" country life, you'll adore her books. Full of humor and wry observation of human and animal foibles, Jeanine McMullen's books celebrate our deep emotional bonds with animals. If you've ever wistfully dreamed of raising goats on a craggy mountain farm or of riding your magnficent horse through a misty Welsh valley, you must read these books. They'll make you both laugh and cry, and wishing for more...

Provocative preacher-teacher Michael Eric Dyson, known for his hip-hop-style delivery and encyclopedic intellectual powers, heroically tries to update and examine the true legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. for a glib Generation-X world. Calling I May Not Get There with You a work of "biocriticism," Dyson peels away the superficial image of King the man to reveal a complex human being whose work was far from finished or totally understood. "In the last thirty years we have trapped King in romantic images or frozen his legacy in worship," he writes. "I seek to rescue King from his admirers and deliver him from his foes." To that end, Dyson takes aim at neoconservatives like Shelby Steele, who spin King's multiracial dreams into a right-wing call to end affirmative action, and goes after black militants who thought King was "soft" and overlooked the power of his "black radical Christianity." He also criticizes the government's co-opting of King's philosophy in a holiday, as well as what he calls the King family's well-meaning, but destructive, attempts to protect King's legacy. Dyson forces us to accept King for all of his faults--including plagiarism and womanizing--but more importantly allows us to see a real human being who rose to the height of humanity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

                                      Book Description

A private citizen who transformed the world around him, Martin Luther King, Jr., was arguably the greatest American who ever lived. Now, after more than thirty years, few people understand how truly radical he was. In this groundbreaking examination of the man and his legacy, provocative author, lecturer, and professor Michael Eric Dyson restores King's true vitality and complexity and challenges us to embrace the very contradictions that make King relevant in today's world.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting expose.......2006-08-08

I agree with Dr. King's message of harmony and peace. At the same time I can appreciate Dyson's exposure of aspects of King's personal life that most authors do not address (an obvious exception is "And the Walls Came Tumbling Down"). In a very real sense it leads to questioning Dr. King's sincerity in asking others to value the character of a person and not the color of their skin. Dr. King was an admirable figure in American history; I wouldn't go as far as the author in saying he might be the most important American ever; that's a bit over the top. I've read a lot on the subject; this book is worth reading.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2004-06-18

I have always been fascinated with Dr. King as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. I love the work that Dr. Dyson did in writing this book, because he is authentic in talking about Dr. King the man - strengths, weaknesses and all - while exposing the myths about him. Being African-American, I can understand why many within our community woud want to scold Dr. Dyson for exposing Dr. King's dirty laundry. I, however, consider it not only essential, but relevant that we talk about the true humanity of our leaders (espcially one as esteemed as Dr. King) to avoid the danger of us elevating them as idols. It is a great reminder that God uses people (albeit flawed people) for magnificent works in a fallen world. This is a great book that I highly recommed!!

1 out of 5 stars libelous work written by pseudo-intellectual.......2004-01-26

I picked up this book expecting a fresh approach and analysis of Dr. King apart from the obligatory images we're force-fed each new year. Instead, I was disappointed to find that Michael Eric Dyson made heavy use of speculation with the intent to scandalize more than to inform and enlighten. One such example includes Dyson conveying the idea that Dr. King may have engaged in orgies with many different women along with his right-hand man Ralph Abernathy. He then goes on to infer that there was talk of King and Abernathy engaging in sexual acts with each other! The author had no commentary to either support or dispel this "theory" making Dyson's retelling of the alleged incident totally irresponsible and even libelous. He just dropped the information, true or untrue, in the reader's lap to do with as the reader pleased. To that end, it is my opinion that Dyson's intent in writing this book was in no way honorable or truth-seeking, rather it was a means to convey his baseless ideas to anyone who would listen. I'm reminded of something my grandmother and mother would always say to me, "an empty wagon makes the loudest noise." Michael Eric Dyson makes a lot of noise in this book but totally lacks substance. This was an expensive tabloid.

4 out of 5 stars be ready for analysis, not simply historical biography.......2004-01-20

This book was not what I expected, but enjoyed regardless. I particularly liked his idea of banning the 'I Have a Dream' speech from public media. The stories about his philandering were a bit shocking to me, but I have never read any biography of King before, so I wasn't prepared. The ocassional tangents might irk some, but understand Dyson has to take some risks and expand on ideas to make the book worth his time. Realize the civil right movement is not over. Dialogue needs to continue in written forms such as this book to make progress.

Much is made of dyson's intellectual prowess; this just goes to show you that all things are relative. There are organisms shuffling down the street to whom dyson's intellect would, one assumes, seem impressive. But that don't necessarily make it so. You may, at some point, have heard the term pinhead. The term signifies that the owner of such a head has a tiny little brain, a "peabrain" if you will. This, in a nutshell, is dyson. He meanders around offering weak commentary and observation that appeals chiefly to the MTV and BET crowd. This is to say, he offers nothing of value other than allowing Penn to make their quota. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs.
