Book Description
Surreal fiction from Juan Goytisolo, Spain's greatest living writer. A resurrected Karl and Jenny Marx sitting on their sofa in Hampstead watching a television documentary about the landing of Albanian refugees on a private Italian beach, flourishing photocopies of dollar bills in search of paradise Dallas. Find out how Karl reacts to the demise of the systems Josef Visionariovitch and Co. built on his word! Read all about the family life of the Marxes, moving upmarket from Dean Street to Highgate and beyond, yet never free of the hock shop. Marx visits scenes of former triumphs in Moscow, where MacLenin T-shirts and harmburger freedom are all the rage, and returns to a Hampstead housewarming reception and ball filmed by the cameras for a Merchant-Ivoryish Red Baroness-which subsequently becomes the subject of a Saturday-night talk show featuring a feminist sexologist from UCLA, an anarchist from the Spanish Civil Bar, Bakunin . . . But the narrator's publisher, the urbane pipe-smoking Mr. Faulkner, wants a best-selling novel, a proper story with real facts and heart-rending descriptions of the Marx menage. Some hope!

Forestalling Armageddon.......2004-05-30
Gate of Darkness Circle of Light is a singleton urban fantasy novel. The focus of this novel is Rebecca, a brain damaged woman with the mental ability of a child, but with the Second Sight. At the age of twelve, she was the only survivor of an automobile accident, suffering a depressed skull fracture which effectively stopped her intellectual development. However, she continued to develop sexually and thus was a desirable target for sexual predators. She has been a ward of the Toronto Metro Social Services since the accident.
In this novel, on a Saturday night, Rebecca discovers the barely alive body of the little man that lives in the tree in front of her apartment house. He has been stabbed with a small dagger. She takes him inside to her bed, but doesn't know what else to do. She leaves Tom, a local cat, to guard the little man and runs to fetch Roland Chapman, a street musician and bard trainee. When they return, the apartment has been disarrayed during a bloody battle between Tom and unknown assailants. The little man finally gives her his name just before he dies. His body vanishes and leaves behind a lot of blood and the dagger.
Rebecca leaves a phone message for Daru Sastri, her caseworker, and then they take the dagger to Mrs. Ruth, a bag lady. She tells them that the dagger is the knife of a Black Adept. Apparently the Darkness is making its move on the world of mankind and they need to enlist the aid of an Adept of the Light to even the odds, Rebecca and Roland convince Ivan, a local ghost, to pass on the request and later the White Adept appears at Rebecca's apartment. Evantarin looks like an adolescent heavy metal rocker, dressed in black and white, and of course is beautiful in a masculine way.
As Rebecca, Roland and Evan are discussing the situation, Daru arrives hastily from a family party and is brought up to date. They determine that the Black Adept has come to open a portal into the realm of Darkness on Midsummer Night; meanwhile, he is killing off the creatures of light and gray as well as indulging himself in sex and blood. Hopefully, they will be able to prevent him from opening the gate and thus forestall the devastation of the Earth in total combat between Darkness and Light.
Police Constable Patton and her partner, PC Brooks, become aware that something out of the ordinary is happening when their car hits a unicorn. Thereafter, they are involved in several mysterious deaths and keep running into Roland and Evan during their investigations. However, both are vulnerable to the manipulations of the Dark Adept and are continually diverted from the real action.
This story is reminiscent of the Bedlam's Bard series by Lackey et al, although preceding that series. In fact, two of Lackey's songs are used herein. However, it based more on the Zoroastrian mythos, in which a balance between good and evil is the desired state, allowing free will for humanity. The exact nature of both good and evil is not specified, but left as a mystery.
The story is apparently the author's third fantasy novel. It has a very unpredictable plotline and an unusual set of well defined characters, although the Dark Adept is stereotypical (evil so lacks originality). The character of Rebecca is extraordinary and the persona of the White Adept Evan is believable without being stuffy. Tom is a male cat, period; he is a totally independent soul with the heart of a warrior.
In case you didn't notice, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I have also enjoyed the author's Valor science fiction series. I have other novels by this author on my shelf which I should get to very soon.
Highly recommended for Huff fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of urban fantasy with a different twist.

Funny read, but wait, there's more.......2004-01-24
This was a very amusing read that took many unpredictable turns that I won't even mention. Wouldn't want to spoil them. And yes, there is also a bit of comfortable predictableness where the reader sees things happening long before they hit the character. Somehow, Huff can make the most "oh I've known that story since kindy-garden" thing into oh my g how ghastly. Great sense of detail. And she isn't afraid to play fast and loose with world religions. And she is capable of creating a character that realistically (fantasy-style) changes and grows.
What I was thinking about, among many other things she made me think about, when I put the book down, is how an author's whole life and way of being seep into their books. For example, some authors always have a wry way of looking at the world, perhaps their humor comes from showing "of course it's this way" juxtaposed to "this is how I hoped it could be, but of course no." Some authors always write with cynicism -- Ray Bradbury for one. His short stories are filled with a bitter view of humanity. Even Farenheit 451 is bitter -- but don't get me wrong; I love Farenheit 451 and it's phoenixesque qualities. Twain always writes with a deep cynicism that grows from great idealism. Huff writes from a generousity of spirit, a welcomingness and hopefullness. This book will make you feel more positive about the world, and have you seeing the "greys" scurrying around and hanging out in the trees. This is the first Huff book I have read, so I hope I haven't judged her wrong. I think this hopefullness is just part of her, and I love seeing a spirit like that weaving through the turns and dips of fiction.
At first I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into..........2002-08-26
I had picked up the book on an impulse buy because there was a unicorn on the cover and the back cover had some very slight appeal. I let it sit for probably over a year until I was hungry for a good book. I started reading it, not sure I was getting into it, but was quickly delighted with the way she took everyday events, twisted them with mythical fantasy and faery tail creatures and legends, and made a wonderful and addicting story that I couldn't put down. Now I'm off to find out what else she has written and how fast I can get it....
Couldn't put it down ! A real pleasure.......2001-07-16
This was the third book of Tanya Huff's that I have read and it was thoroughly enjoyable. A good tale of light versus dark with characters you can empathise with. It moves along at a fast pace with all the action happening in one week. It had echoes of Simon Greene's Shadowsfall for me in that it could have been a horror story but wasn't, or it could have been a trite little tale, but there was always just a little bit more under the surface.
Well crafted and designed to pull you in to her world. I would recommend this book to anyone, even those who wouldn't normally read fantasy.
A fine, fine urban fantasy.......2001-07-15
This was my first exposure to author Tanya Huff, and I immediately had to rush out and pick up as many of her other books as I could find. Not wanting to repeat what others have said, or give away important bits of the plot, I'll just add that this urban fantasy ranks up there with the best of, say, Charles DeLint. The finely crafted characters are the strongest part of the story--I almost wish for a sequel, as I missed Rebecca, Roland, Evan and the others as soon as I put their story down.

All together.......2004-08-06
I loved having finally all the kids together, i never got to read alien blood as i cant find it anywhere but by the end of the first 6 books i feel i know her as well as the others. Any way this book is great as you now feel as if the kids are a real team and could do a lot together and have a chance against the omegas(read #7) Toni is a great character and i think has the best powerse, shes not my faveourite though, thats Jack and Elena, they are both soooo cool. Toni's abillity to control electricity really helps all the kids in loads of situations throughout the books. This book is the book where something big finally happens to the group and they are really put to the test.A great book and real "on the edge of your seater"
it was okay.......2004-05-03
Toni is not my favourite probably because between Jacks jokes, Ethans serious and Ashs combination of the two Toni stands there and whines the other books in the series are better,if I hadn't read the other mindwarp books then I would probably like it alot better. The book gets good near the end when she is in the ______ car and the driver is __ _______ .I have heard alot of people talking about wanting a website so maybe someone who's good at making websites could make an official mindwarp fan site,I'd be happy to help.
my favorite!.......2002-07-31
its an awesome book! in fact, its my favorite. you really should read it if you like mindwarp books! i think toni, the person who gets the powers, has a really cool power. she can travel through time and get electricity from her palms. i can't think of anything else to type, but you really should read it!
An electrifying story.......2000-11-15
I've read the entire Mindwarp series of 10 books and I still think Aftershock is the best (Alien Terror comes in second). Since there's no real explanation of the book I felt I'd better tell you what it's about. Antonia `Toni' Douglas is your typical American girl. Cheerleader and shopper, she does things with zest and wit and an excellent vocabulary. The story opens up with her shopping in a mall for a birthday present (she's turning 13). However, while in the changing room, she gets transported to the past (ten years before to be exact!). She does return, but when she dose, she's arrested for shoplifting (she had `left' with a boutique shirt still on). Later on, during a storm, Toni gets chased by punks and just when she thinks she's done for, the punks get zapped by lightning. It isn't until later that Toni discovers that it wasn't lightning from the sky, but an electricity bolt from HER. Toni has the powers to drain electricity from objects and shock people- also, if she collects enough electricity, she can go back through time. It's then that Toni finds out she's not alone. 5 other teens also have powers. This is the basic info. on them:
Ethan Rogers has super human fighting abilities (more in Alien Terror, #1 Mindwarp), Ashley Rose can swim underwater for any amount of time, and can split herself like a `planariun' worm and regrow body parts, without harming herself (more in Alien Blood, Mindwarp #2) and Jack Raynes can comprehend and speak any language even insect, fax, and alien (Alien Scream, #3). Elena Vargas (Second Sight, #4 Mindwarp) has the powers of a seer, a telepath and can move out of her body in spirit. Todd Aldridge (Shape Shifter, #5)is a shape shifter. However, it isn't long before things tart to fall apart. Toni discovers that there's somebody out to eliminate the `gifted' teens. The things are shape shifters, super human beings (with black bug like globes where their eyes should be) that try to kill you right when your powers emerge. Elena and Todd have already been captured and the creatures now want the rest.
And they are clueless as to how they can stop them.
Just Read This Fantastic Book.......2000-05-18
What I think is so great about Mindwarp #6 is that Chris Archer-- I'm assuming that he's a guy, and not "Christine Archer"-- has told the story of a twelve year old African American girl so convincingly! I'm going through the Mindwarp series with my kids, and I've been really impressed with all of them, but this one has been the most consistently innovative and surprising. Keep it up, Chris!
Book Description
Winner of the James Beard Foundation’s Award for Outstanding Restaurant of 2005
Nestled in the heart of the French Quarter, among the stately townhouses and ornate iron balconies, you’ll find New Orleans’ favorite restaurant. A century after opening its doors, Galatoire’s has become a time-honored New Orleans tradition that draws devoted customers again and again to mark their special occasions. Visitors come from far and wide, knowing that the food will be sublime and the atmosphere warm and inviting.
Galatoire’s Cookbook captures the essence of this storied establishment, with more than 140 recipes for its signature dishes. The restaurant’s unparalleled reputation begins with its emphasis on elegant, locally inspired fare. Anchored in the French Creole tradition, the cuisine of Galatoire’s reflects the bounty of regional seafood, from briny oysters to sweet crawfish; and the family recipes elevate fresh produce, poultry, and game to new levels with sauces and spices that lend unique flavor to each dish.
All of the traditional Galatoire’s favorites are here for the home cook to re-create, from tangy Shrimp Remoulade to classic Creole Seafood Gumbo. And there’s a recipe for every occasion—whether you’re looking for an indulgent brunch such as Crab Sardou, a hearty showstopper like Venison Fillet with Juniper Berry Demi-Glace, or an easy, delicious weeknight dinner of fresh fish drizzled with lemony Hollandaise sauce. Brandy Milk Punch and Champagne Cocktails add sparkle to your evening, and your guests will love sweet finishes such as Bread Pudding with Banana Sauce or Chocolate Pecan Pie—if they can find room after the meal!
This colorful chronicle also offers highlights from the history of the family that has made the restaurant great and captures some of the most memorable festivities that have taken place within its walls. Galatoire’s Cookbook is the ultimate celebration of one of New Orleans’ most beloved restaurants.

Laissez Le Bon Temps Roulez!.......2007-07-12
Great book. It also includes some recipes. This is the best restaurant in New Orleans! What fun it was to spend hours chatting, eating and drinking on Sunday afternoons at Galatoire's with friends and family. I am a native New Orleanian now living in WA state and miss the unique, wonderful food and people of New Orleans. Now with Galatoire's recipes I can recreate a bit of home.
Ripoff Book.......2006-12-10
Unfortunately, Galatoire's Cookbook is little more than a ripoff of books and articles that have previously been published. Many of the recipes reflect those in Leon Galatoire's cookbook (as a member of the revered restaurant family, he was in a position to know the material first hand); and much of the copy seems to be lifted from an earlier work, Galatoire's: Biography of a Bistro. Although the book is slickly framed in a beautiful cover, it offers nothing new for those familiar with the venerable instution on Bourbon Street, and for those who know and love the Creole bistro, it offers nothing, save annoyance.
Avoid this book.
Fantastic Story - Not so good cookbook.......2006-07-26
Would I recommend buying this book - absolutely YES - especially for anyone who has ever had lunch or dinner at this fantastic landmark. Through the stories, you will hopefully relive your experiences at this wonderful institution. If you haven't been there, it will make it a spot that you won't want to miss.
Would I recommend buying this as a cookbook - sadly - No .
Galatoire's in New Orleans is a feeling - an experience - something that you must indulge in. The writer of this book has definitely had this experience and it shows through the wonderful stories as well as pictures included in the volume. But as a cook book, there is something very wrong. I am far from being a professional chef but also by no means a novice in the kitchen. I looked forward to all the exciting dishes described and had a difficult time trying to pick the first one to try. It was a great disappointment. I have since prepared at least 4 or 5 other dishes - all with the same frustrating outcome. Where it called for certain ingredients not found locally, I ordered them. I followed the recipes without making any changes what so ever and was flat out disappointed with each one. Was there a problem taking restaurant quantities and formulating them down for the home setting - I don't know. There seems to be something wrong though. As a cookbook, it was very very disappointing.
Very Pretty book about a great restaurant. Not great cookbook........2006-07-17
`Galatoire's Cookbook' by restaurant general manager, Melvin Rodrigue and restaurant publicist, Jyl Benson is a showcase of all the restaurant's strong points, which have brought it to the forefront of the ranks of American restaurants.
The very first thing one realizes from this book is that it is not only food which makes a great restaurant. The great Michelin three starred restaurants of Europe reach that peak by a combination of great food, great service, and great dining room ambiance. This is all, of course, very expensive. Top flight wait staff, expensive linens, and fancy crockery are not cheap, and all of this is clear from the text and pictures of this famous New Orleans eatery which has just celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Of course, to reach the top of New Orleans eating fame is almost as good as reaching the top of the list in the country, since there are a fair number of world class restaurants in the city, especially Commander's Palace.
The problem with this book is that while it states in its title that it is a `cookbook' and while the majority of pages are taken up by recipes, the quality of the cookbook does not measure up to the relative quality of the restaurant. I would especially warn prospective buyers that the James Beard Foundation award on the cover refers to the restaurant and not the book! Apropos of the credentials of the authors (neither are chefs), the book is more an advertisement for the restaurant ambiance and fame than it is an important interpretation of the venue's cuisine. Compared to major restaurant cookbooks by Thomas Keller (`The French Laundry Cookbook' and `Bouchon'), Eric Ripert (`Les Bernadin Cookbook'), and Judi Rodgers (`The Zuni Café Cookbook') among others, the culinary content in this book is relatively ordinary.
The book clearly states that one may be surprised by the simplicity of the recipes, and it is certainly true that virtually none of the recipes take more than a single page to describe, with both ingredients list and procedure. Part of that is due to the fact that the recipes are truly simple. But, it is also due to the fact that the recipe writer(s) go to no great lengths to spell out some of the more difficult turns in recipes. The recipe for the omelet, for example, does not really have any errors, except that the step of heating the pan without moving is one or two steps too late, based on such diverse sources as Alton Brown and Julia Child.
I was particularly drawn to the soup recipes, because that is one area where the New Orleans cuisine is most distinct from other parts of the country. One problem with all these recipes is that all the recipes are written to serve 8 to 10, a common restaurant batch, but not too common for home preparation. Except, of course, if you plan to use the book as a source for entertaining. This is the most common use of most important restaurant cookbooks. You can brag about the fact that all your recipes are among those made at Galatoire's!
I paid special attention to the Turtle soup, comparing the procedure and ingredients with the comparable recipe in the recent `Emeril's Delmonico' cookbook (to which I gave five stars based heavily on the fact that the book contained a Turtle soup recipe). I am very much the amateur cook, but if I were to judge the two recipes based on what I know, I am inclined to prefer Emeril's recipe just a bit, as he does not grind the turtle meat, simmers just a bit longer, and adds the sherry at the very end, insuring that the sherry taste doesn't get lost in the babble of all the other ingredients. This makes the customer's tuning the taste with a bit of `at the table' sherry more credible with Emeril's recipe. On the other hand, Galatoire's used veal stock instead of chicken stock, which tends to be more flavorful and rich. Otherwise, the recipes are very, very similar, and Emeril's book is a thrifty $25 retail, while Galatoire's offering is about $35 retail. And, Emeril tells us where we can get the turtle meat! Galatoire's list of sources does not include this little bit of information. Overall, Emeril's recipes are more detailed and the sidebars are more about food and less about the restaurant's history, culture, and level of service. One item I found particularly obtuse in this book was the explanation of the difference between Cajun and Creole cuisines. While I have never run across a really good explanation, the offering in this book was lamer than most.
This is not to say the book has nothing to offer to the foodie. I was especially interested in how heavily the cuisine is influenced by mainstream French cooking, especially in the use of sauces. There is an especially heavy use of `beurre blanc', which, if I am not mistaken, is a relatively recent invention, since it is not in Escoffier and it was the darling of the `nouvelle cuisine' crowd. I believe it was certainly invented after Napoleon sold Louisiana off to President Jefferson, well after the Arcadians from French Canada made their way down to the Mississippi delta. I was particularly interested in how Galatoire's crew embellished `beurre blanc' with simple additions such as capers.
So, if you are from the same school as Bob Kinkead (of `Kinkead's' in Washington DC) and read hundreds of cookbooks, but never follow a recipe exactly as written, this is pretty good stuff, but then Emeril's cookbook has much the same stuff for a lower price.
I recommend this book as best suited for died in the wool foodies, patrons of Galatoire's, and lovers of New Orleans. For most others, Emeril, Paul Proudomme, or even Justin Wilson's books may be as good a choice for New Orleans cuisine.
Long Awaited...it's the best!.......2005-12-19
This great establishment has given-up recipes that the household cook can prepare for the best of dinners.
Louis Sahuc's photos bring back all of the memories of that venerable institution. Kudos to all.

Adorable! Spelled the same in French and English, this word sums up the petite French Bulldog. Similar in build to the very popular Pug, the French Bulldog is a roly-poly lotta-lovin' dog -- avec un attitude! While still ranked in the middle of the AKC registrations list at #76, the Frenchie is becoming trés popular.

The French Bulldog : An Owner's Guide .......2007-03-26
I only gave this book one star as this book seems geared strictly towards new dog owners. The Frenchie photos are cute, but not much info that I could use.
Comprehensive and easy to follow........2005-05-22
This is a great book for any Frenchie owner. Unlike some books which claim to be breed specific but aren't this book contains lots of information on French Bulldogs. It covers housebreaking, Feeding, Grooming, Health and so much more. There are lots of great photos as well. I got this book shortly before getting my Frenchie, and it was so helpful. It's written in a way that someone new to the breed like me, or someone that is intreseted in a pet rather then a showdog can understand. This is a book written by a true Frenchie lover, for Frenchie lovers and newbies.
WONDERFUL RESOURCE!.......2005-04-07
I have read and reread this book numerous times. I have owned Frenchies for nearly ten years and this is hands down the single best overall basics on the breed. The author presents important information in an engaging, straight forward manner and is a world renowned expert in Frenchies. If you are considering a frenchie or have recently added one to your family, this book will be an invaluable resource.
Great Book For Anyone Considering A French Bulldog.......2005-03-30
I bought this book when we were leaning towards getting a French Bulldog and wanted more in-depth information. The author is a well-respected breeder of Frenchies with many years of experience. She knows what she is talking about first-hand. This is a great book for anyone considering adding a Frenchie to their family. It is full of all the information you need without excessive information that would overwhelm someone trying to decide if this is the right breed for them. Read this book and you will be well prepared for your flat-faced family member on arrival!
Very Helpful Book With Lots Of Accurate Info........2005-03-27
After aquiring my first Frenchie puppy a few months ago, I read this book cover to cover. Now I use it almost daily as a resource--I even quote this book at my vet's office. I would definitely recommend this book to any future Frenchie owner as it has really been a lifesaver for me.

Customer Reviews:
Decent book, although, his first is far better........2005-10-20
I have read and enjoyed Tom Shannon's first KISS price guide since it was released in 2000 & have found it to be a VERY informative and helpful resource for pricing my collection. The prices are quite accurate and it is very thorough, covering nearly every item in the vast KISS memorabilia empire. It is a very well done book and the printing is top notch. I have been very eagerly awaiting Shannon's new book since I heard he would be starting another about two or three years ago. I purchased his new book "Warman's KISS Collectibles Field Guide" and in my opinion, it leaves much to be desired. Although this is of the highest quality printing, its thick & small 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" size makes it difficult to go navigate easily. Also the amount of info on the pages is very limited due to its small size. The tons of quality color photos he includes with his books are a big plus. It does feature the prices on the listed page rather than having to flip to the back of the book, which was the case with the 2000 book which is a bonus. Many of the old items that were in the first book are in this book. I was expecting much more of the newer items to be included in the book. Much to my disappointment, where some items may have been left out of a category in the 2000 edition, many complete categories are left out completely in the 2005 edition. This is a far better printed book than Ingo Floren's (released last year), although not as complete. If you want a GREAT price guide pick up Tom Shannon's first book. This one may fill in some gaps for newer items, but it is not a complete listing by any means. It does have an interview with Bill Aucoin that is very interesting. This would make a good traveling companion (hence the name Field Guide?) due to its small size.
Excellent Book.......2005-10-15
This is an excellent book. Tons of terrific color photos along with a cool interview with former Manager Bill Aucoin makes this product a winner!

Book Description
Glenn Barr's robots, creatures, and vixens live in a seedy yet swinging 1960s universe, drenched in the haze of a postindustrial hangover. Working out of the burgeoning lowbrow movement in Detroit, Barr creates kinky inner sanctums adorned with disembodied cherubs, morally bankrupt babes, and sizzling femme fatales. Influenced by both pulp art and comics, Barr's work, beautifully sampled in this collection, is the visual equivalent of a David Lynch film. Glenn Barr's work has been seen in various print and television media including Mad, The Ren and Stimpy Show, and Bjork's I Miss You video.

Dark side of Jack Davis.......2006-03-14
Glenn Barr!!!!!!!!! Wow this is an awesome book with a collection of his incredible images!!! I'm not positive if Glenn Barr would say who his influence is?? but it seems to me.... to be a Dark side of an old MAD comic book artist named Jack Davis.
totally incredible!!
This Book Rocks!.......2004-04-12
Glenn Barr is awesome. A truely unique artist. This book seems to cover most of his career and my only complaint is that the book isn't a little bigger. But even that's not enough for me to give it less than 5 stars. Make sure you pickup The Lowlife Companion with this book.
Great book!.......2004-02-10
This is the very first collection of Glenn Barr paintings in a book! Great reproductions of paintings from one of the very best painters on this planet...I don't know what kind of problem the previous reviewer has with the used space in this book; the "white space" is there FOR A REASON: it's called "good layout/presentation"...anyway, buy this book filled with great unique cartoony paintings...there's nothing like a Glenn Barr-painting! I'm really looking forward to the next Barr-book...
too much wasted space.......2004-01-28
this book has art on one page and nothing on the back of the page!its no good.its art on every other page!i don't recommend this book at all!

A Daring Escape to Freedom!!!.......2002-12-22
Ellen and William Craft were a young (mid-20's) slave couple who made a daring escape to freedom. Light-skinned Ellen cut her hair short and dressed in the suit and tophat of a white planter. Since she was illiterate, her husband William made a sling for her arm, so she had an excuse not to sign hotel registers. And since she had a womanly voice, the couple devised a poultice tied around her jaw indicating she had a bad toothache and could not speak. William played the role of his white massa's slave. And the couple traveled by train, steamship, and wagon to their destination in the north. They soon became popular lecturers in the United States and Europe. This is a remarkable story of daring and bravery and should be read by everyone. Anyone who wants to introduce their children to good historical fiction should get them The Journal of Darien Duff, an Emancipated Slave, The Diary of a Slave Girl, Ruby Jo, and The Journal of Leroy Jones, a Fugitive Slave.
Engrossing.......2002-07-31
I read this for a college history survey course before it was mistakenly announced that the book was out of print. The book was dropped from the syllabus, but I am glad I read it anyway.
The first and shortest part of the book is William Craft's powerful account of how he and his wife Ellen executed a daring escape from servitude in Georgia. Their plan was remarkable in its ingenuity: The almost white Ellen, outfitted with a master's clothes and a poultice on her face to prevent incriminating speech with strangers, and her husband William, disguised as a servant, escaped to freedom in the north. Travelling by rail, the pair exultantly crossed over into Canada and from thence headed for England.
The second part of the book is a third person summary of the couple's travels after their ambitious escape. It follows them from Georgia through the slave and free states, in which they were well received and protected (especially in Boston), up to Halifax and across the water to England. I found the final two thirds of the book the most enjoyable, as it treated of foreign travel, in which I have a keen interest. Both portions of the book are beautifully written and often gripping. I hope a few of my classmates read this before that announcement. This book is both pleasurable to read and historically vital.
The Freedom you will get when you read this book........2000-10-31
This book is a captivating account of the injustices of slavery and a amazing story of two fugitives running for there freedom. This book is a great story that should be taught in schools and should not be ignored in American History classes. It opened my mind to the horrors slavery actually caused. It represents a part of our history that should never be repeated. 5 plus stars.
Unique Plot and Style for a traditional topic.......2000-05-25
While taking an African American literature course in college I was introduced to this novella written by William Craft. It is a must-read for American and African American history classes. The novella is a quick and easy read, with the capacity for great discussion and in-depth analysis. Humor, suspense, mystery and action is all provided in this wonderful tale of escape and hypocrisey.
A must read for American history students.......1999-11-24
Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom is a must read for all American history students and should be required reading at least at the high school level. This book gives the reader a first-person view of that "Peculiar Instition" known as slavery and to what lengths one will go to achieve personal freedom. This book will change your view of slavery forever.
