Book Description
Leaving his cousin Yrkoon sitting as regent upon the Ruby Throne of Melnibone, leaving his cousin Cymoril weeping for him and despairing of his ever returning, Elric sailed from Imrryr, the Dreaming City, and went to seek an unknown goal in the world of the Young Kingdoms where Melniboneans were at best, disliked. Read by Jeff West. Included is a dramatic introduction over 11 mins in length, read by Michael Moorcock. An 1 disc MP3-CD edition.

Super Reader.......2007-08-30
There are three parts to this book. Sailing to the Future includes the crossover where Elric meets, Erekose, Hawkmoon and Corum aboard the Dark Ship of the Captain.
Then there is Sailing to the Present, and Sailing to the Past. The latter is a reworked version of the Jade God's Eyes.
A great follow-up to the first book !.......2004-07-27
Let me start by saying that I read the 1976 DAW version of this novel. The Sailor on The Seas of Fate begins with our hero Elric escaping from one of the nations of the Young Kingdoms which took him captive between books 1 and 2. He finally loses his pursuers on a lonely unknown beach. Hungry and cold Elric encounters a strange ship with a blind captain and a crew made up of several of the Eternal Champions. Once aboard, Elric begins a long journey through an alternate world where the boarder between dream and reality becomes blurred. The book is really one story told through 3 separate adventures.
During these adventures, Elric makes new friends, fights powerful supernatural creatures and does his usual summoning of demons and elementals. As usual in the Elric novels the line between good and evil is not clear, nor should it be since Elric's world is based around the conflict between Chaos and Order. Because of this good and evil somtimes share the same host. Elric learns more about the strange black sword Stormbringer and how it's lust for blood has the power to influence his relationships.
This book has the same crisp clean writing style of other Moorcock books. Moorcock's writing style is straight forward and to the point. No wasted dialogue or breathy descriptions. Some people don't like Moorcock because or his tendency to be brief and to the point. I however love this style of writing. Moorcock is a master of the english language and as a result his text and dialogue have a medieval flavor while at the same time being very easy for the reader to understand. Of course at the center of any Moorcock novel is his incredible imagination and his ability to keep you turning the page.
I must confess that I am a major Elric and Moorcock fan. His work moves me in a way Tolkien never has. I recommend this book to all fans of good literature and Fantasy. Now i'm off to read Wierd of the White Wolf !
2 of 6: Now a word from our sponsor, the Eternal Champion........2003-02-10
Michael Moorcock, The Sailor on the Seas of Fate (DAW, 1974)
The second novel of the Elric series picks up where the first left off. (There is one major detail regarding Elric's betrothed, Cymoril, that seems to have shifted back in time, but Moorcock resolves it later; still, it seems to have been something of a gaffe.) Here we are introduced, for those who have never read any of Moorcock's other fantasy series, to the idea of the Eternal Champion, and that many of Moorcock's heroes and antiheroes are facets of the same personality throughout time and space. Moorcock meets up with three other incarnations of the Eternal Champion-Corum, Hawkmoon, and Erekose. (Excellent advertising for the other series, whether intended that way or not.) Things get confusing here, as some of the others mention events that haven't happened yet in the Elric series, but just ride with it. It'll all come clear eventually. Needless to say, having read (or reading just after the Elric books) the Hawkoon, Corum, and Erekose series will deepen one's appreciation for this part of the Elric series.
The main complaint I have about Moorcock's writing, while not to be found solely in this novel, is most notable here. Moorcock's action scenes, for all that they are some of the book's turning points, are often described minimally, even sparely. The climax of a battle is often given one sentence, as is the death of a companion, no matter how long that companion has known the characters in the story. (I have made mention many times of what I call characters who enter stories with "kill me now" tattooed on their foreheads. This is the opposite extreme-Moorcock will sometimes spend chapters building up a character, only to treat him as if he did have "kill me now" tattooed on his forehead. It can be disconcerting, to say the least.)
Still, the originalities in the premise, the unique take on the antihero along with the whole concept of the Eternal Champion, coupled with the simple readability of the series, make them all worth picking up. Each can be gotten through in a single afternoon, for most people. ****
A poor sequel for a great character.......2003-01-31
As much as I love Elric and the Melnibonean mythology, SAILER ON THE SEAS OF FATE is a disappointing follow up to ELRIC OF MELNIBONE.
The book starts with Elric finding himself in a strange land. He boards a mysterious ship and sails off to the first of three unrelated, convenient adventures which do little to progress the overall saga. The stories serve more to explain the whole ETERNAL CHAMPION concept, along with giving details of MELNIBONE'S history and the interaction of all the planes of existence. And ultimately, after 160 pages, nothing really happens.
Though the book is about Elric and his adventures, I found myself really wishing to hear news of Melnibone and the characters who Elric left behind. They are all as much a part of the fun and adventure in the first volume as is Elric. They should have been given some attention.
Three stories in one........2002-04-17
This book is devided into three sections with three different plots. While they are loosely related to each other they could stand alone (I have a feeling Moorcock published them seperately). This is an observation not a criticism. The first and last are excelent. The middle one drags a bit. The first is interesting since Elric teams with three other incarnations of the Eternal Champion (Erekose, Corum, and Hawkmoon). The last fleshes out the multiverse more.

Fake writing for a fake name..........2007-07-22
Where does this author get off? First off Sundiatta was the name of a great leader/family/empire in West Africa. A Tellem is Dogon and the other name I have no idea. BUT I am really tired of uneducated people thinking they can use big ideas and ruin them with poorly organized books with spelling errors and the like...boo
What a waste of Money!.......2006-12-27
I bought this book in hopes of receiving a well written informative book on Reptilian Aliens, but received a little flimsy, poorly written piece of garbage. Please dont waste your money with this ridiculous book, that appears to have been written for an audience of 10 year olds. The author is a black supremacist who obviously can't write well and tries to sound highly intelligent by throwing in a few words about chemistry and atoms into the mix. Please dont bother, this book is a total piece of crap and its gonna be used to pick up my dogs poop..... this book is a joke. It's good for a laugh.
Small Book packed with interesting information.......2006-06-18
Though the book has a few spelling errors, the information given is imformative and learned. Tellem takes you to from the presence of reptilian aliens in oral and written traditions of Africa,India, S. America and around the world. The book deals mostly with the reptilan alien, human genetic lineage and the new physics. I recommend the book for anyone interested in Reptilian and conspiracy theory.
A Great Book of Memes.......2005-01-23
I really enjoyed "Reptilian Aliens a Book of Memes". The Shapeshifter chapter was most interesting.

More than Memes?!?.......2004-12-30
Not since I was first transproted in my adventures during the "Spring Break With Melanie Nuntia" have I been so moved in realms of wonder by Sundiata.
I can only imagine this is the secret narrative behind the events in Occitania (France). The Librarian Melanie Nuntia is a living representative of the goddess Tanith. The Serpent Goddess empowering young women.
Knowledge of the anicent ways is no longer the prize of bearded old Masons. The sword is in the hands of the sisters...
These are more than just Memes that Sundiata weaves into this wonderful work, these are living archytyopes hat are going to shapre the future of human kind.
Having played "The Great Game" ARG I have learned a thing or two about he willingness of the reptilians to share their knowledge with average human beings...that may be saying a lot for a "game" but all I can say is that the "universe" as we know it is at play...
Book Description
I love supper. It’s friendly and relaxed. It’s easy to invite people over for supper, for there’s a quality of comfort that isn’t always there with dinner, a meal that suggests more serious culinary expectations—truly a joy to meet, but not all the time. Supper, on the other hand, is for when friends happen to run into each other at the farmers’ market or drop in from out of town. Supper is for Sunday night or a Thursday. Supper can be impromptu, it can be potluck, and it can break the formality of a classic menu. With supper, there’s a willingness to make do with what’s available and to cook and eat simply. It can also be special and beautifully crafted if that’s what you want.
—from the Introduction
In her first collection of suppertime solutions, the author of the bestselling cookbook classic, Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, solves the perennial question of what to cook for dinner, with more than 100 inspiring recipes to enjoy every night of the week.
What’s for supper? For vegetarians and health-conscious nonvegetarians, the quest for recipes that don’t call for meat often can seem daunting. Focusing on recipes for a relaxing evening, Deborah Madison has created an innovative array of main dishes for casual dining. Unfussy but creative, the recipes in Vegetarian Suppers from Deborah Madison’s Kitchen will bring joy to your table in the form of simple, wholesome, and delicious main dish meals.
These are recipes to savor throughout the week—quick weekday meals as well as more leisurely weekend or company fare—and throughout the year. The emphasis is on freshness and seasonality in recipes for savory pies and gratins, vegetable stews and braises, pasta and vegetable dishes, crepes and fritters, delicious new ways to use tofu and tempeh, egg dishes that make a supper, hearty cool-weather as well as light warm-weather meals, and a delightful assortment of sandwich suppers.
Recipes include such imaginative and irresistible dishes as Masa Crêpes with Chard, Chiles, and Cilantro; Spicy Tofu with Thai Basil and Coconut Rice Cakes; Lemony Risotto Croquettes with Slivered Snow Peas, Asparagus, and Leeks; and Gnocchi with Winter Squash and Seared Radicchio.
Vegan variations are given throughout, so whether you are a committed vegetarian or a “vegophile” like Deborah Madison herself, you’ll find recipes in this wonderful new collection you will want to cook again and again.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as others by Madison.......2007-06-19
Yeah, my experience was more like Annabel Lee's than Eve's. I've made recipes from this book that were good but I've made more that felt like a lot of effort with little return.
On the other hand, I love that Madison suggests wine pairings for the dishes. I don't always have a glass, but I want to complement my meal when I do. I hope Madison includes this feature in all her future publications.
I am a fan of Deborah Madison but recommend Vegetarian Cooking, Local Flavors, or even Vegetable Soups over this title.
Also, the binding quality on my copy is terrible. I rarely use the book but chunks of pages have fallen out. Perhaps? this problem has since been addressed by the printer, but buyer beware.
Awesome Book.......2007-02-18
I recently became a vegetarian, and this book has proven invaluable in the kitchen. I thought my meat-free lifestyle would be nothing but dull stir-fried veg night after night, but this book has given me loads of easy, useful recipes that even my husband will eat!
Her best yet.......2006-04-19
I adore Deborah Madison; she is my favorite cookbook author. She just makes the kind of food I love to eat. She is the master of rustic, tasty, healthy whole-food recipes, and is better at herbing and zesting the ingredients than any other cookbook author I have come across. Making her food is very satisfying. Somehow she makes everything taste sublime. I will undoubtedly buy any book she writes. That said, this is my favorite of her books so far. The food is just so delicious, and none of the recipes are difficult. If you live anywhere in the vicinity of a great farmers' market, this is just the book to help you make use of the wonderful produce you can find there. Favorite recipes I've tried include Spinach Quesadillas, Yellow Peppers Stuffed with Quinoa, Black Bean Tostadas, Artichoke Fritatta, Masa Crepes with Chard, Winter Squash Lasagne, Whole Wheat Penne with broccoli and green olives, Gnocchi with winter Squash and Radicchio. If I pared down my whole cookbook collection, this book would be one of the 5 books I'd keep. In my opinion, this is also her best looking book so far, since the photos and graphics are much better than in the past. With each recipe, she includes go-withs that are to be found in two of her previous cookbooks. If you are a Madison fan already, you'll have these books, but since most of these recipes are full meals in themselves, you can also go without. This book is a must-have.
My favorite cookbook!.......2005-11-26
I love this book! It is great for exactly what I wanted to do...learn how to cook some fun, vegetarian dishes that even I wouldn't goof up!
Every dish that I've tried has been a success...that's saying a lot since my mother's only cooking lesson was 'how to heat a can of corn.'
One thing to mention is that this book is meant to build on Madison's other cookbooks. It is not meant to be a complete guide for basic family meal planning, just simple yet elegant main dish ideas suitable for casual entertaining.
With our only child in junior high now, and my husband doing volunteer work, we are up to having about 1/3 the time that a serious cook does for making dinner, and these meals fit right in.
Most of the recipes I've used take about 25-40 minutes to prepare, mostly because I'm really slow at cutting vegetables, finding where I set the teaspoon, etc.
I guess you can't see the contents or preface above, so here's the layout of the chapters:
1. Savory Pies and Gratins
2. Vegetable Stews and Braises
3. Pasta with Vegetables
4. Crepes and Fritters
5. Mostly Tofu and some Tempeh
6. Eggs for Supper
7. Hearty Cool Weather Suppers
8. Light Meals for Warm Weather
9. Supper Sandwiches
10. Basics (eg, guacamole, peanut sauce, tapenade, warm goat cheese sauce)
What I really like about this book is she explains things simply enough for a beginner, and uses mostly ingredients that I've heard of, but always takes things a step beyond what I'm familiar with, so I'm learning something.
So if you are a food snob, this book is probably not pretentious enough for you. If you have a large family and don't feel like getting creative with dinner at the end of the day, and just want something you can throw together fast that will feed several and probably be edible, this book is not for you. But for a family of 3-4, or a couple who likes to have something special a few nights a week, this is just perfect.
My favorite recipe is one for a couple of eggs cooked over mushrooms sauted in wine and bread crumbs...it's something I can throw together for myself in just a few minutes when I get home late, and I don't have to measure anything because you just put in as much of each ingredient as you like...and it tastes so good!
About the wine recommendations--Not only is it good for your heart, but new research shows drinking red wine on a regular basis may help prevent or delay the onset of alzheimer's. Since both health problems run in my husband's family, the suggested wines have been a fun way to incorperate a very healthy habit.
Mostly good, but..........2005-04-28
I've tried a number of recipes in this book, and they were adequate in relation to the effort made. Still, I'm going to try more, as they sound interesting. The skillet-seared tofu was a big hit, and there was enough sauce to make it again later in the week. the whole wheat penne with "masses of broccoli, green olives, and pine nuts" was very good, pretty simple, but made way too much food, even for my hungry family, and it is supposed to serve 4 "generously." After several days of leftovers, I finally had to toss it. Black bean tostadas with slivered cabbage, avocado, and pickled onions sounded really interesting. Deborah promised that each of its components, and there are several, are very simple to make. Still, there were too many bits and pieces and pots and pans and utensils. It took over an hour to make, and the cabbage salad was very watery and made too much. The black bean sauce, on the other hand, made scarely enough to go around. the author suggests serving this dish with a fresh corn soup and a guava dessert (no recipes given), which would lkeep the cook in the kitchen for at least another hour to hour and a half. I also tried the Braised mixed greens and garlicky beans on toast. It was OK, but with only one garlic clove used with the bean and greens mixture (another one is used to rub on the toast), it was hardly garlicky, and really, had not much special flavor at all. It's the kind of dish you can make without a recipe.
Another quibble I have with the book is that if these are supposed to be casual suppers, it is odd that she recommends a different wine to go with each meal-one would need either quite a wine cellar, or a very well-stocked liquor store nearby. I would have liked more information, or even very simple recipes, for side dishes to complete each meal.
Like I said, I'm still going to give the book more of a chance. Wine-braised lentils sounds good, as does Huckleberry potato pie (never heard of Huckleberry potato, though she says one can use any sort of waxy potato-so why not recommend that to begin with?)
I'm not sure that those who own Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone would find much that is new or better in this book.
Book Description
There has been a change in how we treat our horses: We no longer "break" them to harness or saddle; we "gentle" them, so they become our partners, their natural grace and athleticism restored and enhanced through humane and thoughtful methods.
Beginning with equine evolution and domestication, Dr. Miller and Rick Lamb focus on the contributions of such classical horsemen as Xenophon, Pluvinel, nineteenth-century "whisperers, tamers, and professors," and modern masters like the Dorrances, Buck Brannaman, Pat Parelli, John Lyons, and their disciples, and the connection between rodeo and natural horsemanship.
The authors describe how the horse's mind works, how horses learn, and how the revolution has used those principles, especially with regard to a training regimen for newborn foals developed by Dr. Miller that produces positive results to last a lifetime.
These training methods include new techniques in riding, such as preliminary groundwork and the independent seat, as well as visualization and other aspects of sport psychology, yoga, and allied disciplines. The role of tack and equipment is also discussed and evaluated in depth. And because the modern attitudes are reflected in equine care, appendices assess innovations in hoof care, nutrition, and veterinary treatment, including so-called "alternative therapies."
With its exploration and analysis of modern attitudes and approaches, THE REVOLUTION IN HORSEMANSHIP is one of the most important equestrian publishing events of this decade, and ensures its position as a classic in the field.

rec. by gold medalist.......2007-08-22
I became interested in this book because it was recommended by an Olympic gold medalist. Not a bad recommendation, since it is a Western oriented book.
Natural Horsemanship.......2007-08-09
While this book contains plenty of useful and interesting facts concerning
natural horsemanship, for someone who's already into it, it can be somewhat tedious reading. Not something I couldn't put down until I
was done. I'm going to think twice about purchasing the followup book.

You will love this one- horse person or not!.......2007-01-16
This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. It really covers ground. It is educational, very well researched and written with such knowledge and passion that even the chapters that from the title seemed like "the same old stuff" , were interesting. I could not put it down!!
I bought extra ones to give as holiday gifts for my friends and they too loved it, whether they were interested in horses or not.
This book is an interesting and refreshing new point of view, that will help people to understand the prey/ predator relationship between horse and a human seeing it though the horses eyes. It is a journey through the history of the horse and a human as partners which offers hope for horses today, but more so makes the reader realise how much hope the horse today offers people all over the world.
A book you can go back to and read over and over, each time getting more out of it.
Interesting and Informative .......2006-11-11
A very interesting history of the Natural Horsemanship 'movement'. The books works it's way through an overview and then looks at a large number of the most well known proponents.
I think that the title was much grander than the content. The content of course only looked at NH or perhaps what should be more correctly called cowboy horsemanship. Although, this has indeed been a very significant change in horse training in recent times, there was no effort in the book to look outside of the US.
For instance, no information on positive reinforcement, the re-emergence of 'classical dressage' or the european contributions to horsemanship. There was also no real discussion about how the general increase in availability of knowledge has made people more aware of issues and training techniques nor information on the scientific research into animal intelligence and learning that is making changes to our views on animals and horses and driving this search for 'new' methods.
The most interesting aspect of the book was perhaps the history of the trainers themselves vs their 'marketing'. Fascinating to see how so many people with little or no horse knowledge can suddenly invent themselves as gurus...
Balanced + Thoughtful.......2006-02-17
This book should be considered a primer for people wishing to finally understand the sequence of events in popular horse training, both current, and the recent and not so recent past. Say what you will about the marketing Savvy® of certain successful trainers, even they willingly give credit where it is due when it comes to recognizing the contributions of the "horse's lawyer" Tom Dorrance and his more talkative successor Ray Hunt. This book puts them all in order and gives an overview of the successive styles of horse behavioral modification systems. The authors also give a short exploration of traditional and non-traditional tack highlighting the why's as they go. This book should be considered a textbook for anyone wishing an organized insight into the riding aspects of equine training.

Beatles Memorabilia Price Guide 1997.......2002-02-02
I was disappointed with this book due to the fact it needs to be updated from 1997. It only covers Beatles memorabilia, not records or albums. Didn't cover autographs. Only covers pricing for early Beatles items, nothing current or the Beatles as individual artists. If you need a price guide for early items and don't mind the book being outdated by 4 yrs, this is the book for you.

Purported Expert Doesn't Care Enough to Correct Mistakes.......2007-04-24
I'm not knocking this entire book; there's a lot of good info in here. What bothers me is that the supposed 'gospel' and 'official' price guide failed to accurately describe the availability of a certain Beatles Collection - BC 13 - Limited Edition box set released in the United States during the Christmas Holiday /December 1978.
As the facts still stand, this "retail release" was available to the general public, in stark contrast to Perry's statement of being only available to Capitol Record executives and industry affiliates. This type of sloppy journalism results in the creation of false perceptions in the market place...
Perry is da man.......2006-12-07
The book is awesome. And a must if you are a collector.
I cant wait until Perry finaly releases his new book!
Don't waste your money !!!!!.......2005-07-29
If you want to learn anything about Beatles records, you are much better of getting copies of Bruce Spizers books, and tracking prices on Ebay. Forget about this overrated and out of date waste of money. I wish I found out before I blew a bunch of money on Ebay.
Official price guide for the Beatles records and memorabilia.......2002-03-29
It doesn`t matter if you have been collecting the Beatles for years or a novice just starting out, this book has something for everyone.Chock full of details like label variations and year of release. What better way to find the value of your record collection than by the experts, and Mr. Cox certainly is that.He has been writing the only official guide to the Beatles records for years. Now,this book is in a handy size so you can take it along to yard sales where you`ll know if you`ve found that treasure or not.For ebayers, this book is a money saver. No more,"I sold it too cheap cause I didn`t know the value" Highly recomended.
The Ultimate Beatles Research and Pricing Guide.........2001-08-28
Perry Cox is the world renowned expert on Beatles records and other collectibles. The man simply has an encyclopedic knowledge of their recordings. This is the ultimate pricing and descriptive guide to their records, covering vinyl in all forms issued in the USA (which means it doesn't cover import versions) and CDs, with other collectibles touched on in its final pages. The emphasis here is clearly on Beatles LPs, EPs, 45s, and CDs, both group efforts, and solo releases. If you are a Beatles collector or want to start a collection, or learn how much your existing collection could be worth, this is the book you want and need. There is no other reference that can touch it. Some of the photographs are poor, but I'd chalk that up more to the printing process than anything. If you need to know EVERY variation of Sgt. Pepper's that Capitol/Apple ever released, or the nuances of the differences in all the pressings of any other Beatles LP, EP, 45, or CD that you can think of, this is your book. Perry's long essay on the "Butcher Cover" version of Yesterday and Today is, alone, worth the price of admission. With prices of Beatles collectibles still soaring, with vinyl getting more and more valuable as the years go by, you need to be armed out there in the marketplace, whether you are buying or selling. You can't do any better than to foray out there with this book in hand.

Buy this for the Photos only.......2000-04-25
While it's hard to knock anyone who clearly has a passion for the Beatles, the fact remains that this book is only worth it (IMHO) as a reference for its photos of Beatles memorabilia. The pricing is wildly off in many instances. And there are many items that you may argue do not deserve any mention due to their lack of collectibility (would you pay ANYTHING for a Mid-West newspaper announcing John's death? - much less hundreds of dollars! ) It feels like one fan's personal photo tribute to their own Beatles collection. A little more research and checking with other collectors could have significantly increased the value of this effort. Having said that, you may find this book still worth it for the photos.
Useful as a picture book,not a price guide.......1998-06-15
This book has some nice photos of newer Beatle items, but is very weak in its coverage of 1960`s memorabilia. Many of the values listed are wildly high, with newspapers relating to John Lennons death priced at over 100 times their actual $5. value. The items depicted in the book seem to be randomly selected, anyone trying to value their collection will be unable to find numerous licensed items produced in the 70`s,80`s and 90`s,the era this book covers.

it is so bad
i hate it because i cant find certin things
not very creative.......2002-12-15
With the word creative in the title I was expecting a more original style of decorating, or at least a broader range of styles. Instead, the style of this book is primarily tradional/cosmopolitan. I do not like that style, so that is probably why I don't like this book. I found it rather boring. The photos are not too bad, but nothing special. I have to admit I was too turned off by the photos to bother reading much of the text, so perhaps the written information would be more useful to people, but I doubt it. Two other definitely more useful books would be The Kitchen Planner and Better Homes and Gardens Complete Kitchens. I reccomend that you skip this book.
Creative Home Design: Rooms for Everyday Living.......2000-06-27
This book is a wonderful design book. The photos are inspiring and show a broad range of modern and welcoming styles. The text accompanying them is very straightforward and details what limitations or problems the design overcame. It is difficult to imagine that the rooms will become dated - they appear to be very fresh, sensuous and appealing. I was able to take some ideas from various rooms and incorporate into my place. This book is very inspirational and allows one to view work of top designers and architects not readily accessible to the public.

Book Description
The true story of the greatest counterfeiting scheme inhistory and the men the Nazis called upon to help it succeed--a group ofconcentration-camp Jews.Only a fortnight after the start of World War II, at a meeting that hasremained a secret for more than half a century, Nazi leaders and officialsof the German Reichsbank approved an audacious plot to counterfeit millionsof British pounds. Now, drawing upon top-secret bank records, German andBritish correspondence, and interrogation transcripts, award-winningjournalist and author Lawrence Malkin reveals how an unremarkable SSofficer named Bernhard Krueger attempted to bring down the world financialsystem. But when Krueger discovered that forging pounds, and later dollars, was no easy task, he made a crucial decision: he would seek out thegreatest counterfeiters of prewar Europe and enlist them in the effort. Hefound them in an unexpected place: a Nazi concentration camp.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and well written book, marred by errors.......2007-04-06
This is a very interesting book. The author does an excellent job of turning historical facts into a story. He manages to form complex history into a narrative that is interesting and informative. I was particularly impressed by the insightful analysis of the Nazi bureaucratic structures and their players. This is a well-written book and reads quickly. It will be of interest to both the WWII historian (especially if concerned with economics) and to those who study the Holocaust.
I am glad I read this book and I learned from it, but there are two areas in which I feel it falls short. First, there are a lot of controversies surrounding the interpretation of WWII history. The author typically picks one of these interpretations, presents it as fact, and neglect to mention that it is not fact at all, but supposition. One of the most egregious examples is the author's explanation for the calling of the Wannsee Conference and the switch (in 1942) from shooting Jews to killing them in concentration camps (predominately, by gassing them). The author explains that Heinrich Himmler was repulsed by the idea of German soldiers shooting people, even Jews and sought other solutions. This explanation is based in fact, but it ignores the many other explanations that reputable historians have offered for this change in policy. Among these is the inefficiency and messiness of killing millions of people by shooting them one at a time, the strain this posed on a stretched German military apparatus which was failing to win the war in Russia, internal power struggles in the German bureaucracy and the clearer articulation by Hitler of his desire to exterminate all the Jews.
Second, there are a distressing number of errors in facts in this book. I will give but two examples: The author states as fact that 900,000 people were murdered at Treblinka. Most scholars agree that 800,000 is the correct number. The author provides a list of extermination camps in Europe, but neglects to mention either Chelmno (150,000 killed) or Belzec (430,000 killed). There are literally scores of such errors in the book. They don't alter the overall story or the analysis, but they are noticeable to the more knowledgeable reader.
I do not know anything about currency and economic policy in Britain, but the number of errors related to the history of the Holocaust led me to wonder how accurate the other facts in the book are. I would ask that a knowledgeable reader in this area assess this question.
Not much of the 'story' in this book of facts.......2007-02-19
Although I finished reading this book I did so imagining that at some point there would be a real narrative of experiences by those who lived it, i.e. a story of what happened. Instead it is like an assembly of facts and names and dates all of which I began to ignore. Without the story of what happened what difference do the dates, names, etc. make to anyone? Very disappointing read.
True World War II story that might shock you.......2006-11-10
Since the first coins were minted, men have tried (the vast majority of the time unsuccessfully) to make themselves rich by counterfeiting the world's currencies for their own prosperity. Nations too, have used the tactic in time of war for the last two thousand years with little success.
Lawrence Malkin's historical Krueger's Men, details probably the single most successful effort of a nation or state's attempt to devalue another nation's currency in time of war.
From the earliest months of World War II, Nazi Germany plotted to counterfeit one of the history's premier and most stable currencies, the British pound. Through a series of fits and starts, Heinrich Himmler and the vaunted SS hit upon a solution that would haunt the Bank of England for half a century.
What started as an experiment--with a motive of devaluing the currency of the last-standing free country of Europe--sent tremors through the shattered economies of nearly every country in Europe.
Krueger's Men explains in startling detail how the prisoners broke down the Bank of England notes to the microscopic level and eventually produced British bank notes so perfect that many were taken as real by the bank itself!
Millions of pounds worth of forged notes were surreptitiously circulated through a variety of money launderers scattered all around the European continent. This played havoc with British currency that at the inception of hostilities traded at four pounds to the US Dollar.
By the end of the war, the exchange rate was one for one and many British citizens refused legitimate bills when tendered because of the known scheme to undermine their own currency. One has to wonder whether, given enough time, would the British economy have survived?
To understand the scope of the deception, it wasn't until a little over two years ago that the Bank Of England finally admitted that its currency had been forged during the war.
Lawrence Malkin has done extensive research as the epilog, notes, bibliography and appendixes will testify.
Krueger's Men exposes one of the greatest dark secrets of Nazi deception, the will to live of the men pressed into service at the camps, and a victor's unwillingness to admit the truth.
Armchair Interviews: An amazing true story of World War II.
Fascinating Historical Account.......2006-10-26
It was one of Nazi Germany's top-secret operations. It was the most humiliating episode in the Bank of England's history. It saved dozens of Jewish artisans from the chimneys.
Operation Bernhard was the massive counterfeiting plot designed to destroy England's economy--and the financial wellbeing of any other nation that dared to defy the Third Reich. With the failure of its predecessor, Operation Andreas, Operation Bernhard sought talent from an unlikely source. SS Officer Bernhard Krueger selected his crew of counterfeiters from concentration camps. Some of the men were only hours away from death when they were recruited for the scheme. Printers, lithographers, artists, and others with related skills were brought to Block 19 at Sachsenhausen.
While he was nothing like Oscar Schindler, Krueger saw the sense of treating his men like human beings. Decent food and clothing meant so little to those used to it, but it meant far more to those who had been denied the most basic of necessities. Such treatment will buy respect, if not some form of loyalty.
Author Lawrence Malkin's in-depth research delves into a lesser-known facet of WWII and Nazi Germany. The first several chapters provide information of the events leading to the formation of Operation Bernhard. These chapters are somewhat slow, but they are essential to understand the remaining narrative, which grows intriguing andcompelling.
KRUEGER'S MEN would be an excellent reading choice for students of WWII history, as well as any fields that could benefit from the study of a complex crime ring.
Whether a student or casual purveyor, this book is a fascinating study of brilliance and diligent work put to an unsavory use.

An excellent educational tool .......2005-07-17
This work contains biographical portraits of some of the most important figures in Jewish history. The book is written with a clear factual tone, and provides accurate information on the entries. It is a kind of short encyclopedia and I believe an excellent educational tool in the Jewish people's struggle to deal with their own ignorance about themselves and their history.
I suppose one element of reading such works is a certain ' pride ' if one is Jewish at knowing that one is somehow connected , belongs to the same people as the distinguished person in question.
I think the authors were wise in choosing people whose actions are generally considered valuable contributions to the Jewish people and mankind as a whole.
This work should be of real pleasure to anyone who takes interest in Jewish culture and history.
Great for a brief history.......2002-06-04
This book is an excellent book. It covers information about many different men who have played important roles in Judaism, from Abraham to David Ben Gurion. The book is good if you are looking for a 2-3 page biography and certain highlights of a person's career, but could not be used as an only reference for a research project.
Overall, the Slaters have created a good book documenting important aspects of Jewish history.
Great Jewish Men Forgot Albert Einstein.......2000-03-26
I think the book was ok, but it left out a very important jewish person. That important person is Albert Einstein. As I finished this book I realized that it did not have Albert Einstein in it. That was very dissapointing. So, in conlusion, I would give this book 3 stars because it left out the amazing Albert Einstein.

Product Description
The Mishna and the Talmud are the books that are the backbone of Jewish tradition, faith and history. Though the principles of the Oral Law were given to Moses on Sinai, the transcription, development and expansion of it was accomplished over a millennia beginning with Ezra (c.400BCE) and ending in Babylonia with the advent of the period of the Geonim (c.585CE). All of this work was done by people - great men who built the eternal Jewish world. As people, they had families, responsibilities, disappointments and tragedies. This series highlights the lives of some of these great men and will give the listener an insight into their personal lives and their world and into the creation of the great works of the Mishna and the Talmud.
