Book Description
Three short novels show Golding at his subtle, ironic, mysterious best. The Scorpion God depicts a challenge to primal authority as the god-ruler of an ancient civilization lingers near death. Clonk Clonk is a graphic account of a crippled youth's triumph over his tormentors in a primitive matriarchal society. Envoy Extraordinary is a tale of Imperial Rome where the emperor loves his illegitimate son more than his own arrogant, loutish heir.

Ancient lights.......2000-10-24
Not quite three short novels, but three long stories - "The Scorpion God", set in ancient Egypt; "Clonk Clonk", set in Africa somewhere around the Dawn of Man; and "Envoy Extraordinary", set during the late Roman Empire. All are distinguished by Golding's glorious if occasionally difficult style - it's sometimes hard to discern precisely what is going on, but that's because the author is trying to project you into the consciousness of people who are fundamentally different from you - pre-Christian, pre-industrial, pre-rational and in one case prehistoric. All three stories deal with the emergence of new forms of consciousness and hence, new forms of society - in the first, we see the vague beginnings of the Pharaohs; in the second, perhaps, the beginning of the sex war; in the third (in many ways the least difficult of the three) the brilliantly ironic fate of a few ideas which were centuries, not years, before their time. In "Envoy Extraordinary" only - the story set closest to modern times - the attempted change of consciousness does not succeed, is deliberately repressed - or rather, removed until later. There's a real sting in this tale, just as logical, just as inevitable and far less predictable than the ending of Golding's excellent Pincher Martin; the barbs in "Clonk Clonk" and "The Scorpion God" are a bit more subtle and may take longer to sink in, but you'll feel them all right.
Book Description
In the grim medieval Old World, a motley gang of convicts are released from a military prison and offered a grim choice: either volunteer for a suicide mission, or die by the noose. Unsurprisingly, they are very keen tovolunteer for the mission when they are offered a full pardon upon it's completion. But when they discover that they must penetrate deep into enemy territory and bring back a powerful holy relic that could turn the tide of war, they begin to regret their choice. With a traitor in their midst and impossible odds ahead of them, the band of blackheart prisoners must fight their way through the Chaos-infested mountains and into the very heart of darkness
Customer Reviews:
Nice spin on a Cliche.......2005-06-25
Like some of the other reviews have said, the book is a cliche.
Men slated to die given a chance to carry out a mission for their freedom. Sounds pretty straightforward? Very "Dirty Dozen"ish? It is. But it isn't. The characters are thrust into a situation that seems way out of their league, but they perserve and push on against relentless foes and very large odds indeed.
It definately breaks the cliche in places. After reading many, many Black Library offerings from C.L. Werner, Dan Abnett, Ben Counter, William King, and a plethora of others, I think that for his first offering, Nathan Long does a wonderful job of capturing the gritty elements of the dark world of Warhammer fantasy.
The story definately kept my attention from the beginning, as the main character Reiner, a man of noble birth but apparently of low-rank; sits in his cell contemplating which cellmates would make for the best partners in escape, to some of the more climactic battle scenes near the end of the story, I think it's an excellent ride.
The characters besides Reiner all seem to work well in my mind. The ruthless and bloodthirsty Knight, the pair of villanous pikemen, the cowardly savant Artilleryman, the downtrodden Engineer, the malicious Barber-Surgeon, the plucky young archer and the unfortunate Tilean Rogue, all seem to come together well as their mismatched personalities lead to some interesting dialogues and exchanges throughout the story
There are some nice turns and twists and I definately look forward to seeing more of Mr. Long's work.
It has something to offer to the first time reader and the hardened Black Library gurus alike. Give it a shot.
Horrible.......2005-02-06
I have read 98% of the offerings from the BL and have to say this is the worst novel yet. Usually they manage to print only the best of the short stories submitted but this novel misses the mark. The author fails to capture any of the atmosphere of the gothic world of Warhammer. All the ingredients are there but I couldn't help feeling I was reading a screen play. If this is the first novel from either Warhammer or warhammer 40k you read, please don't get turned off. Try William king or Dan Abnett as examples of the best this genre has to offer.
Ode to "The Dirty (half) Dozen".......2005-01-18
This novel was chalk full of non stop action.
Despite being packed with nothing but action and being
a short novel, it manages some very good insight into the
cast of characters. I found the novel to be a very easy read
and finished it in one reading.
The other review has already stated anything else i
might have said except that I did find one
character to be very unbelievable.
The Novitiate Knight, Erich was just too stupid to be believable.
The writer could have built some kind of realistic motivations
that might have explained the character a bit better as he
did with the rest of the cast.
On the whole, a very satisfying read. Would definately purchase
any sequel even though i don't tend to buy Warhammer fantasy
novels except for the Gotrek and Felix line.
I purchased this novel to fill my order for
super express shipping. That and the storyline sppealed to me.
Cliches Twisted Here.......2005-01-06
Valnir's Bane begins with a bang, lets neither rain nor sleet nor dark of night keep it from delivering nonstop gore and colliding bodies and objects, and then ends in a whirl. And I have to face it, I love this sort of thing. I'll read it over and over again -- if it's done well. Nathan Long does it well. He hauls out all the old adventure plot devices and characters without shame, polishes them up, and then proceeds to warp, muddy and hack them to bits. Bring it on!

Animorphs are COOL!.......1999-03-30
Animorphs are very, VERY cool. It's about these five kids given the ability to morph into any animal they touch by an alien named "Elfangor." They have to fight an evil alien species called "Yeerks" to save Earth.Their names are Jake,Cassie,Marco,Rachel,Tobias and Ax,Elfangor's little brother.I recomend this book to anyone who likes comedy and adventure. I also recomend that you read the Andalite Chronicles. Reading it will help you understand the Animorphs books better.

Most diners believe that their sublime sliver of seared foie gras, topped with an ethereal buckwheat blini and a drizzle of piquant huckleberry sauce, was created by a culinary artist of the highest order, a sensitive, highly refined executive chef. The truth is more brutal. More likely, writes Anthony Bourdain in Kitchen Confidential, that elegant three-star concoction is the collaborative effort of a team of "wacked-out moral degenerates, dope fiends, refugees, a thuggish assortment of drunks, sneak thieves, sluts, and psychopaths," in all likelihood pierced or tattooed and incapable of uttering a sentence without an expletive or a foreign phrase. Such is the muscular view of the culinary trenches from one who's been groveling in them, with obvious sadomasochistic pleasure, for more than 20 years. CIA-trained Bourdain, currently the executive chef of the celebrated Les Halles, wrote two culinary mysteries before his first (and infamous) New Yorker essay launched this frank confessional about the lusty and larcenous real lives of cooks and restaurateurs. He is obscenely eloquent, unapologetically opinionated, and a damn fine storyteller--a Jack Kerouac of the kitchen. Those without the stomach for this kind of joyride should note his opening caveat: "There will be horror stories. Heavy drinking, drugs, screwing in the dry-goods area, unappetizing industry-wide practices. Talking about why you probably shouldn't order fish on a Monday, why those who favor well-done get the scrapings from the bottom of the barrel, and why seafood frittata is not a wise brunch selection.... But I'm simply not going to deceive anybody about the life as I've seen it." --Sumi Hahn
Book Description
A deliciously funny, delectably shocking banquet of wild-but-true tales of life in the culinary trade from Chef Anthony Bourdain, laying out his more than a quarter-century of drugs, sex, and haute cuisine—now with all-new, never-before-published material
Customer Reviews:
sex and drugs in the kitchen.......2007-10-06
I thought I was going to read some "kitchen secrets" rather than "secrets" that occurred in the kitchen. If I wanted to read about how a drug addict became famous, there are a lot more autobiographies I'd rather read about. Bourdain's arrogant behaviour and kitchen antics didn't impress me. The message I got was in order to be a successful chef, you have to use obscene language, have loose morals and do drugs. I'm a chef instructor in a culinary arts school in Europe.....is this what I'm supposed to be like to inspire my students????
FUNNY.......2007-10-02
I would have never thought to pick up this book... I actually would have never thought he took writing serious enough to write a book! On TV, I love his style... his crass personality... and how his humility shines through when you least expect it! This book is the exact same way! My co worker let me read it and I have not been able to put it down. Classically written ... personal and professional about the business without being all over the place... 5 STARS!
Did I Need to Know?.......2007-10-01
Now that Bourdain is featured on TV, this book will probably get a new life. A mind-blowing look at life in the restaurant kitchen - crazier than we could have ever imagined. Lots of really good insight. Anybody thinking of following the culinary profession must read it.
Kitchen Confidential audio book.......2007-09-27
Loved this raunchy rip of a tour through the world of (upscale) restaurant meal creation. And what a view it is of the unique characters who wield chef's knives! Bourdain is a great writer as well as obviously a superior/successful chef, and to top it off, his baritone voice is perfect for the audio format....great inflection, drama, humor.
The Birth of Classic Bourdain.......2007-09-15
Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain is funny, irreverent, acerbic & just mildly obscene. It's classic Bourdain. Tony's first non-fiction work, orignally published in 2000, explodes to life as read by the author himself. This really launched his media career, and is far more engrossing that the rather tame Fox TV series based on this memoir.
If you have a fascination with fine food, contemporary restaurants, smart-a** sarcasm, or really conscise descriptions of acid, heroin or cocaine abuse-- you really need to read or listen to this terrific book.
Book Description
The 10-Minute Retriever reflects the authors' belief that daily ten-minute training sessions best suit a retriever's attention span and lead to rapid learning. This book is easy to use for the absolute beginner and yet deeply informative for the serious student of retriever training. The text has the information most needed by the owner of a pet retriever: how to make it reliable obedient and well-mannered. It also has the information for which amateur retriever trainers are clamoring: how to force fetch, how to set up tests in the field, and how to use an electric collar humanely and effectively. The emphasis of their training method is on obtaining necessary control and good manners while maximizing the dog's enthusiasm for its work by establishing training situations where the dog desires to cooperate. Primary importance is placed on developing and enhancing the desire to retrieve, from early puppyhood onward. The method presented provides a solid foundation to the dog and owner continuing to advance retrieve training (blind retrieves and competition). Concepts and methods are illustrated with true dog stories. Difference between the major breeds are described and adaptations are given for the different breed personalities.

this is prolly the 3rd best book ive read on hunting dog training, quick and easy, give it a try
10 Minute Retriever.......2007-08-06
I was pleased with the book until I realized that one chapter was missing. I ordered a second one and had the same problem. I also had to take the time to return the first one and kept the second one, which is still missing a chapter. Perhaps your books should be scanned after printing to avoid misprints being mailed out.
In response to B. Blazer's Spotlight Review..........2007-05-15
How B. Blazer's review was determined to be Spotlight material baffles me. His review makes it patently obvious that he knows precisely nothing about training dogs, has never spent time with professional trainers and has never run a dog in a field trial or hunt test.
Force fetch is an essential part of training retrievers. It is the foundation upon which advanced training is based and all competitive retrievers undergo force fetch training. Yes, you create stress in the dog through the ear pinch or toe hitch because competing and hunting yield stressful situations for the dog as he works through terrain, challenging wind conditions, cold and dozens of other factors that come into play during a retrieve. A dog not trained to handle that stress will exhibit major performance issues when the going gets tough, from popping, ignoring handling or, worse, a total no-go.
To address B. Blazer's little numbered list:
1.) At no point do the authors of Ten Minute Retriever call for the use of a whip. The tool is called a heeling stick. It is never suggested that the heeling stick be used to abuse the dog. It is merely a way to extend your reach to deliver taps and swats for immediate correction of issues like breaking.
2.) At no point do the authors suggest "tying the dog's mouth shut around a dummy". For a dog who chronically spits the dummy during hold training, the authors suggest that a lead may be looped about the dogs muzzle while you reinforce the hold command verbally.
3.) I just explained ear pinch, which is one of the most common practices in retriever training, only slightly less common than...
4.) ... the electronic collar. B. Blazer seems to take exception with the verb "burn" but then goes on to claim that he is not against the "proper" use of the e-collar. The ONLY purpose of the electronic collar is to deliver an electric shock or burn unless Tri-Tronics has a new Rainbows and Unicorn Ponies model I am unaware of.
B. Blazer's conclusion that the training methods outlines in this book serve only to break a dog's spirit is one of the most pathetically laughable statements I have ever seen in an Amazon review. This books methods are straightforward, basic retriever training of the type one can find from top trainers like Danny Farmer or Mike Lardy. There is a logical progression from puppy yard drills and basic obedience through refinement of line manners, multiple marks and basic handling. The information in here will yield a solid field dog or provide a foundation for Derby work in field trials.
Like any training program, steady progression, intense repetition and, most importantly, PATIENCE are what is required. If it were impossible, as B. Blazer foolishly suggests, to both instill desire and passion for retrieving in a dog while also applying direct and indirect pressure during training, every competitive retriever in the world would be an empty husk of a dog - an assertion so baseless and without merit as to be laughable.
AMAZING TRAINING BOOK!!!!.......2007-03-13
I highly recommend this book as it breaks the training down to what is most successfully. 10 minutes a day is one of the best ways to train a dog, especially for retrieving. I enjoyed how this book was broken up with true stories about the authors experience with their own dogs and it brought a lot of life into the reading of this book. The photos and diagrams were very helpful as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone working on training any type of dog for retrieving.

This is a very helpful book. It really works on our lab pup!

They say that our first impressions are the most important ones, and it may well be that this is true for places as well as people. First Impressions is all about that most important moment, and it's aimed at helping your home instantly convey the loves and lives of its inhabitants. Designed to appeal to every style, you'll find photos of formal antiques and leaded glass right next to shots of bright yellow walls and cheerful daisies.
While the photos are inspirational, the text is down to earth and addresses the practical concerns of these heavily trafficked areas. While furniture can be a pleasant addition, author Anna Kasabian reminds you to never impede the flow; "nothing is so attractive that you will want to detour around it many times a day." Even with a few common-sense restrictions, her solutions of unique floor coverings and creative use of available space will provide fresh new spaces that are both easily navigated and welcoming to lingerers. If your space accommodates a small table or sitting area, Kasabian encourages you to use it, even for tea and crossword puzzles. Lighting, wall and floor treatments, architectural points, and overall style all come under scrutiny, and she suggests you include personal collections or memorabilia for a truly personal statement.
You make a point of standing up straight and smiling when you're introduced to someone. Shouldn't you make sure your home does the same? --Jill Lightner

Building Doors and Entryways.......2003-01-26
Do not buy this book unless you are building a new house, addition or remodeling. Tells you little about making doors and designs that make sense for the average home owner.
Artisan's Bible on Custom Doors.......2002-12-27
This book addresses all aspects of artful entryway construction from tools and safety to hand carving and installation. No finish carpenter or homebuilder should be without a copy of Weis' book on Building Doors and Entryways.
Building doors yes, hanging & adjusting, no........1999-02-12
Good book for building a door from scrach. Not a good book for hanging, repairing or adjusting doors.
First-rate addition to my library.......1998-01-20
Building Doors and Entryways taught me the basics of a challenging and at times mystifying trade. I came away from the book with a sense of confidence about building and installing doors, and with some ideas for creative door- and- entryway design as well. Worth reading for anyone fascinated and frustrated by doors and their construction. The author knows his subject.
Not what I had hoped for........1997-03-25
There is too much fluff in this book. I was looking for a book with plans and ideas for building different
style doors. Instead what I go were chapters on setting up a woodworking shop, how lumber reacts to moisture and how I should select l
lumber, how to use a jointer and how to make different kinds of joints- all of which I am already familiar with. The final fifty pages or so
were plans for a few doors plus a gallery of photos of different doors. Too many woodworking books do this.

If there are still people out there who are into mailing letters/postcards to friends, I am sure they will get a kick out getting these postcards. Great postcards to send to your single girlfriends for laughs.
Naked on rollerskates ..........2002-09-11
I love this book and will be giving copies as gifts this Christmas. The series of magnetic postcards feature pulp covers, and the "Naked on Rollerskates" card alone is worth the price of the book. Absolutely gorgeous.
For that friend who 'has everything'.......2001-10-11
Pulp fiction revolving around the 'bad girl' theme is the topic of Bad Girls In The Big City..., a candid presentation of dramatic pulp paperback covers which display women at their worst. An added bonus: these are 'magnetic postcards' suitable for refrigerator display. A fine gift recommendation for that friend who 'has everything' - and a large refrigerator just asking for displays.

Perry McCarthy decided at the age of 18 that he wanted to reach the top in the world's most expensive sport. This is his autobiography. Foreword by Damon Hill. "Perry McCarthy does for Formula One what Bill Bryson did for travel writing. But beneath the black humor and wisecracks - funny enough to make you laugh out loud in public - lies an inspiring and at times poignant tale of the rarest kind of racer: one who never gave up and was, literally, prepared to die trying" David Tremayne, The Independent on Sunday.

Flat out flat broke.......2007-09-22
Even if you don't remember Perry you have to read this book. After reading Perry's story I became totally selfish and said "I'm glad all that happened because that was one gripping, funny read".
Not only is Perry's story a fascinating insight into the old days of F1, he's a damn good writer and a very funny man. Even if you're not an F1 fan this is a very interesting read.
Fast read of F1 from the non-glamorous side.......2007-04-13
In someways, reading this book you are constantly thinking: no way this can all be true. It would seem that lightning can strike not only twice but multiple times. F1 officially always portrays (especially in current era) a gloss of glamour and flash. You rarely hear the story of one that fights and struggles beyond those that may come up, not perform and fade away. Perry seems to have perfected the art of pulling up from the bootstraps, getting kicked hard and starting all over again. In this book you can see the scramble for sponsorship, the stretch to make ends meet and how it becomes an undying desire. I have had acquaintances whose dream to make it in the NFL eventually lead to the loss of marriage and all else and I can connect with that dream of reaching for the golden ring but falling off the horse instead. This book moves along well but you are always juggling is it true, is he really good or just really crazy. You want the pieces to fit together but fundamentally the dogged determination to keep going provides not only humor but motivation.
Flat Out Laughs.......2007-04-01
Not all racers are as determined to succeed in racing, nor as articulate as Perry McCarthy, and damn few are as funny! This is a great, quick read with a laugh a minute.
Flat out, Flat good!.......2003-09-08
Being an F1 fanatic, I had just finished the great book by Murray Walker. Looking for another ýgoodý book about F1, I found this gem on Amazon. Mad Dog is among other things, a fighter and you have to give him credit; getting into the worlds most expensive sport with no cash is quite a feat.
The book is very well written in a Conversational style that makes you feel like one of the ýrat packý. Like F1, itýs paced at the speed of taking Eau Rouge flat out. After reading this story, you certainly wish you were one of the blokes lined up to give him money. He has a charm and whit that is infectious and translates well in print. I strongly recommend this book. Not to learn about F1, but to learn about Perry. To learn something of risk, gambles and the will to succeed at all costs. The parallel stories of his mates; Hill, Blundell and Herbert are equally entertaining. The overall story of his father, who was foreshadowing Perryýs own career choices and paths, is a welcome angle to this book as well. In short, this book was a total surprise and treat for anyone that just likes good stories of life and struggles in the motor racing world.
To Perry, I say good luck to you sir. You have had a difficult road to travel but what memories it has provided for you, and now me.
A careers worth of "silly season".......2003-04-09
