Book Description
Ridiculed for her Saturday salon, her long romance novels, and her protofeminist ideas, Madeleine de Scudéry (1607-1701) has not been treated kindly by the literary establishment. Yet her multivolume novels were popular bestsellers in her time, translated almost immediately into English, German, Italian, Spanish, and even Arabic.
The Story of Sapho makes available for the first time in modern English a self-contained section from Scudéry's novel Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus, best known today as the favored reading material of the would-be salonnières that Molière satirized in Les précieuses ridicules. The Story tells of Sapho, a woman writer modeled on the Greek Sappho, who deems marriage slavery. Interspersed in the love story of Sapho and Phaon are a series of conversations like those that took place in Scudéry's own salon in which Sapho and her circle discuss the nature of love, the education of women, writing, and right conduct. This edition also includes a translation of an oration, or harangue, of Scudéry's in which Sapho extols the talents and abilities of women in order to persuade them to write.

Good, but Not for Everyone.......2005-06-08
There is accurate folklore information in this book, but it is mixed with random speculation and humor by the author so things can get a bit confusing. For the bits that were true folklore accounts there is not much indication of the source so it might not be obvious what information on dragons and unicorns can truly be found in other sources. I found it interesting, but if you are looking for specific, clear information on mythological beasts you should probably look elsewhere.
Don't buy it........2005-04-07
The authors warn the reader that this book is based entirely on theory and quite a bit of it is intended to be humorously untrue. That being said I didn't truly hope to glean anything I hadn't already learned about dragons and unicorns, but still counted on it being an entertaining read. It wasn't.
This is a poorly executed attempt at a joke, and it's extremely poorly written. A school child would have done a much better job writing a report on mythical beasts. Not recommended, especially not for Dragon and Unicorn enthusiasts.
A Must Have Book.......2004-03-13
This was one of the first dragon and unicorn books that I laid my hands on and its still one of my favorites years later. For those who like to learn about "real" dragons and unicorns that actually have a biological aspect, this is the book. While these species of dragons and unicorns don't have the magesty of the roleplaying dragons or unicorns, they have a nobility all their own. Definitely get this book and check it out.
Utterly Disappointing.......2003-06-29
This book was awful. It provided false information based on theory without any true research involved. For those wanting to learn about Dragons do NOT buy this book. It makes out dragons to be weak pee-brained animals throwing off the true powerful stature of the draconic kind. As I said for those interested in truly learning about Dragons go find sources elsewhere. I have studied dragons for many years and must say this book has to be one of the worst I read.
Pretty good.......2003-05-20
I wouldn't really recommend this book. It's great for historical references, but it's the kind of book that you read once, then put aside forever. That's what I did. If you really feel compelled to read it, try to get it out of the library.

A geologist from the age of Darwin examines the fossil records and myths from civilizations throughout the world to illustrate the origins of legendary monsters, showing how extinct creatures such as the woolly rhinoceros might be construed as a unicorn and flying reptiles interpreted as dragons. 93 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Good book and well written.......2006-08-23
I was interested in this book when I came across it at a Bargain bookstore. I read that this guy lived at the time when Darwin was alive. I had to get this book when I looked through this book. I'm a creationist but nothing like this I really heard alot of. Charles Gould is pretty much trying to separate the mythologies with the reality. He does a good job in the book with showing that those myths could be explaining something that "really" existed and that this did "really" happen. I could go in to detail but this book is worth it to read it. It's a good book and is not a waste.

Editor David G. Hartwell started this annual anthology series because he felt that the "other" best science fiction anthology (The Year's Best Science Fiction) included stories that weren't quite science fiction. Now in its second year, this anthology is proving that there is plenty of great "traditional" work being published in the field, and enough good stories to go around for both anthologies (although there is some overlap between them). In this edition Hartwell showcases talents such as Terry Bisson, James Patrick Kelly, Gene Wolfe, and Allen Steele. No matter how you define science fiction, you'll find something of interest in this excellent collection.
Book Description
Building on the unprecedented success of last season's Year's Best, award-winning editor David G. Hartwell has once again scoured the magazines and anthologies to bring together the very best of today's edgy, audacious, and innovative SF. Here are machines that dream and stars that sing; tales from notable pros and heretofore unknowns;wondrously diverse stories that share the sense of wonder that is the mark of great science fiction. "
Includes stories by:
Gregory Benford, Terry Bisson, James Patrick Kelly, Damon Knight, Joanna Russ, Bruce Sterling, Connie Willis, and many others!

Still very good.......2003-01-21
The second in a series for Hartwell. Once again he gathers an eclectic group of Science Fiction writers that cover a wide variety of sub-sections to the genre. He has included two tributes to science the fiction forefathers Well and Verne. My personal favorite of this anthology was 'The Bride of Elvis', a tongue and cheek look at a religion developed around the death of the King. I also loved 'Counting Cats in Zanzibar' by Gene Wolfe. A robot story about a contract killing. If you are looking for easy reading that can also provoke thought, this is a good place to start.
Awesome, simply awesome........2001-12-20
I love the way this collection was put together. All of the stories were well-written and easy to follow, and most of them were quite thought-provoking. One of the best books I've ever read!
I'd rather like it to be "Month's best SF".......1999-01-20
It opens with a tribute to H.G. Wells and ends with an homage to Jules Verne. In the middle are 18 more stories that span from side to side of the SF spectrum and, even though they might not be all in the reader's preferences, are sure worth reading, if not thought-provoking. Talking about preferences, I can't help mentioning Terry Bisson's "In the upper room" and Damon Knight's "Life edit" as the best of the lot. Look forward for number 3, and 4, and...
Book Description
Arthur Avenue winds its way through the heart of the Bronx. Known to many as the "real Little Italy," the storied Arthur Avenue neighborhood has been home to a vibrant community of Italian-Americans for over a hundred years. Today, this area continues to thrive as visitors and residents stop to buy a fresh, crusty loaf of bread; to enjoy a meal at Mario's Restaurant; to dawdle for a while at Randazzo's raw bar on a warm summer afternoon; or to hear Mike's Deli owner Michele Greco belt out an aria from Rigoletto and spellbind his customers with tales of the Avenue's past.
Now, for the first time, the residents of Arthur Avenue invite you to experience the magic of their kitchens and share the flavors of their family tables. Passed down through generations, their delicious recipes are time-tested, tried, and true -- and ready for any kitchen. They include:
• Sicilian Baked Ziti • Yankee Stadium Big Boy (The Greco family's famous grinder that was rated one of the best in the city by the
New York Times) • Osso Buco • Olive Ciabatta • Italian Ricotta Cheesecake • Cannoli • and more
The Arthur Avenue Cookbook also invites you to savor the memories of the neighborhood's most colorful residents, restaurateurs, and shop owners, and those of their families -- many of whom have lived in the neighborhood since it first came into being. Meet Mario Borgatti, the noodle maker who has been there for more than eighty-five years. Anthony Artuso, Sr., takes his bakery business so seriously that he went seventeen years without a vacation -- in part, to ensure that each bride and groom got the perfect wedding cake. And Mike Rella, president of the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, remembers learning English by working in a butcher shop, where he's now a partner with his uncle Peter Servedio.
This cookbook also provides a guide to the pastry shops, delis, restaurants, and other famous and lesser-known gems that line Arthur Avenue. Gorgeous photographs, extraordinary characters, and enticing dishes make
The Arthur Avenue Cookbook an irresistible addition to any kitchen.

The Arthur Ave. Cook Book.......2007-10-05
If you have ever lived near, or on A street in NYC like Arthur Ave.and Little Italy, the pictures and recipes will bring you there again, you can even hear the conversations, and the smell of the neighborhood are so vivid, you want to try to repeat the recipes and be there. They did,nt have super markets, it was a neighborhood ,and shopping for the foods needed for the day ment talking to the veg. man and the sausage maker and then the cheese store. It ment asking how the family in Itly was, and getting the news or a different story from every market. Fresh bread OH How I Miss it. This book is a master of REAL ITALIAN FOODS, and from the REAL ITALIANS
The Arthur Avenue Cook Book and Memories from the Real Little Italy.......2007-03-13
The recipes were excellent but the story of the "Real Liitle Italy" was fantastic. I grew up in this neighborhood as a child and was encouraged to find out that many of the merchants and the character of the area are still in place. Great recipies and even better story. I have not been back for many years , but I will now make an effort to visit when I go back East.
This Cookbook Reeks with Honesty.......2007-01-24
The Arthur Avenue Cookbook is beautifully put together in every way. The recipes, the photographs, the storyline and the quality of the book itself are absolutely first-rate. The people in this book are completely genuine - there is an honesty about their lives and their livelihoods that jumps from the pages. There are no pretenses here: the recipes do not require a lot of complex sauces or fancy ingredients and there isn't a lot of impressive talk about the celebrities who may have visited these businesses, rather it is a book about ordinary people with extraordinary attitudes about what tastes good. It is all as you would want it - cooking that is straight from the heart, straight from the soul. Bellisimo!!
The Arthur Avenue Cookbook.......2007-01-10
This is a wonderful book with great recipes and stories. For anyone who had an Italian immigrant arrive in this country through Ellis Island, and especially if their family settled originally in the Bronx, this is a must-have book.
Arthur Avenue is the REAL Little Italy.......2006-11-14
"This is your world, I'm just temporary." So said the waiter at Mario's on Saturday night, misquoting the old line about Sinatra ("It's Frank's world, we're just living in it") as we settled in to a corner booth. We were with two four-and-a-half year-old girls who were capable of timing out at any moment. Not a promising group. Then we remembered: Mario's is family-friendly. And our guilt at taking up valuable table space on a Saturday night melted quickly away.
But then, we weren't in New York City.
There is a Little Italy in Manhattan, and we have been there. So have you, if you've ever been a tourist in New York and have already crossed Times Square off your list. That Little Italy is noisy and friendly and mildly amusing, and if you are lucky enough to pick a restaurant that doesn't get its red sauce from some central pipeline, you can get a decent meal there.
But it doesn't compare to Arthur Avenue.
Arthur Avenue is in the Bronx, near Fordham University and the Zoo. For a Manhattanite, it's a field trip that not many undertake. For the neighborhood's shopkeepers and restaurateurs, it's home --- probably for three generations. And that makes all the difference.
They filmed scenes from "The Godfather" on Arthur Avenue. More recently, "The Sopranos" dropped by. George Bush, Rudy Giuliani and George Pataki shared a pizza here. It's time travel to come to Arthur Avenue: waiters in tuxedos, valet parking and presents --- like "silver" bracelets --- for the kiddies.
Ann Volkwein visited the mom-and-pop shops. She ate in the restaurants. And she talked to everyone. Her book is essentially a profile of a small town in Southern Italy, where businesses stay in families and you look out for your neighbor and there's no better reason to get together than a meal.
Volkwein's profiles, accompanied by Vegar Abelsnes's evocative photgraphs, are a delight; you'll meet great characters. More to the point, you'll learn about the restaurants and the shops so, when you visit, you can have a personal exchange.
But most to the point: the recipes. This is Southern Italian cooking, It lacks the "refinement" of Northern cuisine. And although there are lovely photos of vegetables and a side order of eggplant at any restaurant here will be the size of a flying saucer, you won't find many vegetable recipes in these pages. The buzz words are "hearty" and "authentic" and "carbohydrates."
What recipe to serve up? What else than meat sauce? But imagine it served by a waiter who is not also an actor, a waiter who's going to be wearing that tuxedo for decades. Enjoy!

This book provides a lot of basic information on horse care. It is a must have for the new horse owner or someone taking up the sport. I was hoping for a little more information on feeding, but overall it was a good buy.

How to enjoy a day at the races-and bet to win!
The last two years have seen a record number of Americans tune in for climatic Triple Crown races featuring Smarty Jones and Funny Cide; in 2004, television viewership jumped a whopping 61 percent over the record set in 2003, and the Belmont Stakes race itself drew a record crowd of more than 120,000! This easy-to-understand guide shows first-time visitors to the track how to enjoy the sport of horse racing-and make smart bets. It explains what goes on at the track, what to look for in horses and jockeys, how to read a racing form and do simple handicapping, and how to manage betting funds and make wagers that stand a good chance of paying off. Complete with coverage of off-track and online betting, it's just what anyone needs to play the ponies-and win!
Richard Eng (Las Vegas, NV) is a racing writer and handicapper for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a columnist for the Daily Racing Form, and the host of a horseracing radio program in Las Vegas. He was formerly a part of the ABC Sports team that covered the Triple Crown.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource!.......2007-08-25
This book has taught me alot about horse racing, and had definitely aided in my enjoyment of the sport and helped me win some money! There are some chapters that are a little boring with unnecessary info.
Excellent For Starters.......2007-06-30
I gave this as a gift to my mother before several trips to the races, and after completing it, I was pleased to find she was doing basic handicapping correctly. This book doesn't get deep into hard-core handicapping, but for most people who enjoy the races as an occasional fun day out, it puts all those numbers in the program or the racing form into perspective... making for a more enjoyable experience! Well done.
And Down The Stretch You Come, With Betting Knowledge.......2007-02-20
With the Kentucky Derby about one week away, it will be like NCAA March Madness where even the casual of sports fans is going to have an opinion on the outcome.
But maybe you will want to take that opinion one step further and place a bet at the local race track or OTB that's simulcasting the race. This book will help you learn the nomenclature associated with wagering on the races and the nuances to betting.
Author Richard Eng guides the reader through the basic bets like win, place and show, but really earns high marks by delving into the exotic bets - like exactas, trifectas and superfectas - where betting the same money as you would on the traditional trio may yield much higher payouts.
The book is not how to handicap races, which is the art or reading a racing form or researching with other material to select runners for your various bets. It purely focuses on understanding what bets are possibly available for the races at your local tracks or on the simulcasts.
And with confidence, you'll be able to march up to the teller and state - for the record - "In race five I'd like an exacta box with with 2 and the 6," just like a pro. And through the help of Eng you will certainly understand it just as well or better than that "expert" who's next in line.
Five stars for the target audience: "Dummies".......2006-11-29
This is a great book for the absolute begginner, first time track experince. For the enthusiastic hobbyist like myself the book only gets two stars.
I thought the pull out cheat sheet in the front of the book was irresponsible, suggesting a sixteen dollar play for the pick 6. I believe two dollars is okay, because it's like buying a lottery ticket, however a minuim of a 128.00 is needed. Anything else is just throwing away money. The suggested amount for the superfecta and pick 4 were off base too.
The book was very hard to read, as it seemed like every chapter the author was just saying the same thing over and over again. Although the book explains to the reader the different types of handicapping methods, it does not teach you how to handicap. Remember the book title is "Betting on Horse Racing" not "Handicapping on Horse Racing".
Now for what I liked about the book. Great glossary and index, something that all horse racing books that I've read lacked. I enjoyed chapter 17, which covered handicapping tournaments. This is something I've never tackled and find interesting after reading. Chapters 19 and 20 covered Harness racing and Quarter horses. I prefer throughbreds because I understand it and find it more enjoyable, but if I ever decide to bet on these types of races I will refer to these chapters. Chapter 25, the ten best race tracks to visit, was also interesting. I'm fortunate to have two of these in my back yard, and in the future I would like to visit the authors other eight picks.
I bought this book after I selected another book and needed to spend more to avoid the three dollars shipping and handling. So factoring that in 10.59 was not a bad price. The amazon advertised 13.59 is'nt bad either, however I would not purchase the book for the suggested 19.99 cover price (not worth it).
In all, good book to have for begginers. Also a good book to have for experinced horesplayers who have non horse playing friends that want to tag along. Much easier to let them borrow the book over night then to have them harrassing you at the track like a little kid with thier questions.
The other do it yourself series KISS and Complete Idiots Guide do not have books on this subject, instead there covered in chapters of other books. KISS Guide to Gambling, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Gambling Like a Pro, respectfully.
Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies.......2006-05-10
I found this book to be just excellent. After being invited to the Kentucky Derby by some folks who own a Kentucky horse farm started in 1867, I wanted to learn more about racing and betting before I went. I was a complete novice, having been to Saratoga several times betting on horses with cool sounding names and always losing. The book goes through everything you need to know about racing and betting. Not only did I win several races before the Derby, but I actually won the Derby with a bet on Barbaro! I made quite a reputation for myself as a handicapper!

Tops!!!!!.......2001-08-07
I have looked through this book and also bought another in the series. It is fantastic, and anyone who is still interested in Barbie at all should not hesitate-buy it today!!!! It reveals hundreds of Barbies from the beginning of her existence, and is so fascinating and you might even see one that you once owned.
The Collectable Barbie Doll: An Illustrated Guide.......2000-07-13
And illustrated it certainly is! This is the first Barbie doll book I had read and now I am hooked on her world. It tells her story from the beginning and brings it to the present day, all the while illustrating it with dolls from all eras. Although the 2nd edition (which is the one I read) is expanded, I would like to have seen a little more of the late 1980's-present. Overall, if you don't know much about Barbie and would like to find a place to start this book is it!
"An Illustrated Guide to Her Dreamy World".......1998-03-26
"The Collectible Barbie Doll" is a fascinating read about the world's most-loved doll. From her early beginnings in 1959, through the sixties, right up to now, Barbie has been everything from Ken's girlfriend right through to an astronaut, covers every race from Caucasian to Japanese, and the hair to match. Fennick's book captures all of this, whether the reader wants an unabridged history of the world's most famous doll or just wants to see the wardrobe! This is THE book for the Barbie fan, and it is definitely one for the collector.

Beautiful But Not For Beginners.......2005-08-15
This is a really lovely book. The designs are wonderful and and carefully presented. The charts are clearly drawn with color coding and back and white notations so they can be Xeroxed for easy reference. The designs range in style from silhouettes, to South American designs, to Elizabethan flowers and a medieval bird with a Celtic boarder. They are all very clearly laid out.
The directions are not as extensive as they could be, but there is a stitch directory and a well organized introduction makes them easy to follow. Most of the designs are worked on linen in very high thread counts with tent stitch rather then classic cross stitch. Though these patterns are not actually miniature, most measure 3 to 5 inches, they are very small.
The book it's self is lovely. All the photos are full color and every design is shown framed. The frame selection is explained to help the reader decide on their own frames for their own projects.
Mostly due to their size, and due to the complexity of most of them, I do not recommend this book for beginners. Though they can be blown up to a larger designs using a lower count cloth, and they do not suffer for it, they are extremely complex.
a treat.......2004-09-21
I wasn't sure whether to give this 4 or 5 stars. It is a really nice book. The style is pleasant, and there are lots of helpful hints about framing. The pages are really high quality. There are color photos of every finished piece, and the charts are in color. The price of $28 new may seem steep, but it is a very high quality book.
A book of simple but superbly crafted designs........1999-07-15
I was drawn to this book by the gloriously muted tawny brown colourings of many of the works, highlighted by a gorgeous range of frames. Many of the works are completed in tent stitch and are fast to work, others are worked as cross stitch one over one providing a beautiful effect. The author has given many ideas for incorporating designs and there are lots of framing ideas. The graphs are easy to follow and the photography is great.
A fine addition to any embroiderer's library........1998-06-23
This book is an absolute delight! Brenda Keyes presents 34 miniature-size designs in a wide variety of styles. I wanted to start right in and not stop until I'd finished every one. Her sense of humor purmeates the book making it entertaining as well as informative. There is a lot of excellent information on finishing and the photography is first-rate.

Perfect introduction.......2002-03-11
This book is a perfect introduction. It's that simple. Graham Glass, by the way, runs TME a company that is about to build a next-generation computing environment called GAIA which is a peer-to-peer system. Take a peek at themindelectric.com.
This book is terrible.......2002-01-18
Another bad book on Web Services. I bought this book as well as Professional XML Web Services, and both are terrible. If you are a developer, then this book doesn't even go into any detail about how Web Services work.
It gives you examples using GLUE which is useless and will fade into complete and utter obscurity. Of course, GLUE is completely incompatible with all the other real SOAP implementations, so if you get this book, you will need to go out and search for a better book, like I'm going to have to right now.
An outstanding work.......2001-12-09
Graham Glass obviously has a talent for making complex material simple and easy to digest. This is evident in both the web services toolkit his company has released, called GLUE, and in this book, which provides a comprehensive, very hands-on, easy-to-read, look at web services.
This book covers a wide range of material, from the basics of what web services are and how they fit in the evolutionary path of distributed computing, to advanced topics such as WSDL and UDDI, Java to XML schema mapping, interoperability, and so on. Glass keeps the reader engaged in a hands-on way with a lot of example source code througout the book. The book utilizes the Java-based GLUE toolkit, which is provided on a bundled CD-ROM, to power most of the examples that illustrate the concepts. There is also a chapter on building and consuming web services with .NET and with Weblogic, a J2EE app server.
To bring it all together, there is a chapter that uses a B2B purchasing scenario to illustrate how J2EE(Weblogic), .NET, and GLUE can work together. This chapter is nice because it really gives the reader a sense of how web services really enable cross-platform interoperability, while sticking to a very pragmatic, real-world situation.
Finally, Glass provides an interesting, thought-provoking look at the P2P world and its intersection with the world of web services.
Glass' writing style is entertaining and his personal voice certainly comes through quite clearly. Overall, a very nice balance between educating the user on abstract concepts and keeping the reader busy with examples. Highly recommended.
Innovative approach to constructing Web Service Architecture.......2001-12-07
Graham is a master when it comes to OO technologies and Graham can convey these technologies clearly. This book covers may aspect of developing the next generation architecture and provides the framework in which to design them. An outstanding book for those who want the 'meat' behind these services. I've read ALL of the books around Web Services (including the .NET) and this is my 'reference' towards building these new technologies...
Graham knows what he is talking about.......2001-11-28
GLUE, Graham's brainchild, is the number one web services
API for Java.
Many people can talk about web services, but only some
can create what is needed from the ground up.
Several other have tried, like Apache, or IBM, but they
don't even come close to his clarity of vision and the
ease of use that comes from this.
Heed his words.

I am a newbie.. This is the start of my journey.. .......2007-05-09
After taking a Computer Graphic Design Class last semister at the Community College that I attend here in the Kansas City area the class pretty much sparked my interest in looking at art. This is one of my first art books that I have bought my first being a book featuring art by MC Escher. I am interested in this style of art.. Lowbrow as it is called.. I like it because it's very thought provoking and makes you wonder where in the world do people get ideas for this type of material? It's really a trip for the mind.. As a whole this book is a very good introduction.. and includes art by several different artists.. you get a good first taste of what this type of art has to offer.. which is perfect if you are a newbie like I am.
Excellent.......2005-11-13
This is a great book. Lots of great featured artists with excellent examples of their work. If you have any interest in this style (lowbrow) art, you can't go wrong with this book...
raves from a lowbrow newbie.......2005-09-04
I do not come from the lowbrow culture ,whatever that is, and have never paid it any heed. But I came across this book and my eyes have been opened. This art is NOT what I had assumed - it's clever, thoughtful, insightful, and challenging. It has an in-your-face attitude which I think held me at bay for a while. But through this book I have learned to relax, to appreciate and to enjoy. Many thanks and much admiration to Kirsten Anderson for assembling this, and for including three short but effective essays by three painters who helped me discover a whole new world lying right before my eyes.
Great Book.......2005-08-05
Can't say enough terrific things about this, it's one of the best selections of modern art available. Yeah. I said modern art and not "outsider" art. Sorry kids, but that new crap we see in Artforum and in the big museums is the hellspawn of marketing, grant maggotry, the corporate world, and the new corporate academia. It has little to do with the natural evolution of Western Art. If it tickles you to think you're being a Bad-Boy/Girl/Whatever by liking this "outsider" stuff then you're falling right into their game plan, you're a niche market and they'll try to eat up this world just like they ate up "alternative music" in one big gulp. This art is the art of true Americans and that other yuck--the so-called mainsteam (which includes the pre-fab avant-garde nowadays no matter how middle-class titilating and naughty it be) is the Devils' work--the real Devil, the one that created Wal-Mart and George W. Bush.
Love this art, demand that your museums purchase it, rejoice in the fact that you'll never see some Ryden or Williams hanging in a corporate headquarters, sing Hosannas that some trendy art monkey with a Smith degree won't be writing pompous reviews using terms like "globalization" and "gender" about this stuff, wrap yourself in the red, white, and blue, and sing the Star Spangeled Banner! I just wish we could find some equivalent modern creative types with this kind of vitality in music and architecture.
(Recommended--read Paul Johnson's recent history of art, especially the bit where he talks about how the modern art world went all to hell because someone figured out how to market the bejesus out of it)
Our Times.......2005-08-03
Great book to get a well laid out view of the pop art of our times.
While the mainstream media ignores low brow art as if it doesn't exist, on the contrary it is very successful amongst the many who grew up on comic books, Mad Magazine, monsters, tv shows, and so on.
A great overview book, you can't go wrong with it.

While The Big O: My Life, My Times, My Game will not disappoint basketball purists longing for Oscar Robertson's play-by-play of favorite games, the attraction of this autobiography is Robertson's perspective on the evolution of the sport and on the racial struggles that were the context of his formative years. Called by many basketball experts the greatest all-around player ever, Robertson earned an astonishing array of honors including an Olympic gold medal, 12 NBA All-Star appearances, the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and the 1964 NBA MVP award. Most remarkably, Robertson remains the only player in basketball history with a triple-double season (double-digit averages for scoring, rebounds, and assists).
While Robertson could have easily candy-coated this impressive record for his retrospective, he devotes large sections of his book to the racial battles he faced off court, and his final chapters recount his controversial efforts as an NBA union leader to create free agency, a pension plan, and disability protection for players. In telling his life story, he lays bare the racism and mistreatment he suffered at the hands of individuals and institutions throughout his career, from the Mayor of Indianapolis and Cincinnati University to the NBA and CBS Sports. At times, his critiques can seem excessive (e.g. his discussions of the distortions in the film Hoosiers, while interesting, are repeated a bit too often), and some sections (like his attempts to compare himself to contemporary players) border on self-indulgence. Yet, he seems justified in arguing that his achievements--largely accomplished on second-rate teams, against a back-drop of unprecedented racial strife, and before the modern era of sports-media saturation--are easily underrepresented. In the end, The Big O offers a complex, human portrait to complement a spectacular sports career. --Patrick O'Kelley
Book Description
Oscar Robertson received every major award in basketball. In 13 years with the NBA, he set astonishing records; in his first 5 years of playing, he averaged double digits in points, rebounds, and assists, a feat no player before or after has matched. But Robertson attracted as much attention for his controversial stances and uncompromising personality as he did for his on-court magic. In The Big O, Robertson speaks out for the first time. He describes leading his team to the first state championship ever won by an all-black high school in Indiana. He broke the color line at the University of Kentucky and was recruited by the Cincinnati Royals, where he did nothing less than revolutionize the game: Quicker and stronger than any other backcourt player in the league, he created the style that would be imitated by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant. At the height of his career, he became president of the NBA Players Union and sued for the right to free agency. It was this action, along with what Robertson believes to have been endemic racism in sports, that cost him his career. Forced into retirement at 34, he was never offered the management or coaching positions routinely given to players of his caliber. Thoughtful, provocative, and unabashedly honest, Robertson has produced an extraordinary book.
Customer Reviews:
I loved the Big O's honesty and frankness.......2007-03-21
What a wonderful book. I don't have a lot of time to read sports books so I'm very picky when I read one. Being a man of 50+ the Big O has always been one of my favorite players and I'm constantly amazed by the lack of credit he has been given with regards to his greatness as both a player and a man. This is a book that the true basketball fan can really appreciate. Like Jordan, Bird, West and Magic the O would be a star in any era.
Using basketball as an agent of change!.......2005-12-13
Oscar Robertson tells it like it was as this book is as much about racism as it is about basketball. I played briefly against Oscar and we were both raised in the hot bed of Indiana basketball. Trying to become an accomplished player was one thing and dealing with discrimination back in the 1950s was quite another. Oscar tries to paint a picture for the reader showing what it was like to muster enough courage to play while being discriminated against. He performed brilliantly despite the bigotry, hatred and prejudice and , perhaps unknowingly to him at the time, used basketball as an instrument of change just as Jackie Robinson used baseball before him.
Oscar Robertson's book, The Big O should be looked upon not only as a sports book, but as a history book. If readers would like to add to their understanding of the trials and tribulations players went through in the Golden Era of Indiana basketball they might also enjoy my just published book titled Growing Up in Indiana: The Culture & Hoosier Hysteria Revisited.
Starts Good but too much Editorializing.......2005-09-27
As a younger person who was not alive during the era that Oscar Robertson was alive I thought this would give me a good idea of what things were like back in the 60s and 70s. Although I particularly enjoyed the information of his early years including what it was like growing up and playing at the Dust Bowl and winning the Indiana State Championship, I felt that his continued effort to slam his opinions down your throat got tiresome.
I think most people understand that he was a good basketball player and also that racism was a very real subject he had to (has to?) deal with everyday. However, hearing him tell you how all the players in the 60s were better than conterperary players just sounds like an old man trying to make you feel sorry for him. Also, throughout the book you feel as if he thinks everyone was out to get him and in turn he had never done anything wrong. He was a great player and had amazing statisitcs every game and so that must mean that the reason he didn't win in Cincinatti was always some other person's fault.
I enjoyed the book but would only recommend this to die hard Oscar Robertson fans and people who can handle being spoonfed (over and over again..) one person's opinions about things that do come across as very arrogent, bitter and perhaps one sided.
THE BIG O SCORES.......2004-11-19
THIS BOOK IS A GOOD READ. OSCAR DOES A GOOD JOB DESCRIBING HIS LIFE ON AND OFF THE COURT. HE GOES INTO DETAIL ABOUT FORMER COACHES, TEAMATES, AND OPPONENTS DESCRIBING HIS RELATIONSHIPS AND FEELINGS. I FOUND OSCAR TO BE VERY HONEST BUT SOMETIMES BITTER AND DEPRESSED. STILL I THINK HE IS A PRETTY GOOD GUY AND HAD A LOT OF CLASS. I REMEMBER HIM AS A COMMENTATOR FOR CBS AND JUST LOVING HIM GETTING EXCITED DURING A GAME BY YELLING "OH WHAT MOVE BY KAREEM". THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK FOR ALL FANS OF PRO BASKETBALL. ROLL ON BIG O.
BUT ONLY FOR BASKETBALL FANATICS - LIKE ME!.......2004-02-26
TO READ, MUCH LESS REVIEW, THE "BIG O" YOU HAVE TO BE, AND HAVE ALWAYS BEEN, A TRUE LOVER OF THE GAME. IT IS AN AUTOBIOGRAHY OF THE IDIVIDUAL I HAVE ALWAYS CONSIDERED TO BE THE GREATEST OF ALL BASKETBALL PLAYERS - PAST & PRESENT. HIS EXPLOITS BOTH ON AND OFF THE COURT ARE REMARKABLE. IT'S A BOOK FOR EVERY BASKETBALL JUNKY, AND FOR OTHERS WHO WANT TO LEARN A GOOD DEAL ABOUT WHAT'S REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE IN ANY FIELD OF ENDEAVOR.
SINCE I CAN'T FIND REFERENCE TO A "GHOST WRITER, OR ANYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN WRITING THIS BOOK, I WILL ASSUME THAT OSCAR WROTE IT HIMSELF. IT WOULD BE WRONG TO JUDGE THIS BOOK ENTIRELY ON "EDITORIAL" GROUNDS, ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT BAD. OSCAR STYLE OF WRITING IS SIMILAR TO THE WAY HE PLAYED BASKETBALL - HE TAKES IT RIGHT TO YOU! "HERE IT IS, DEAL WITH IT IF YOU CAN." HE DOESN'T MINCE WORDS, TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, AND WAS, AND TO HIS CREDIT DOESN'T SEEM TO REALLY CARE, WHAT YOU OR I THINK ABOUT HIS OPINIONS - USUALLY NOT A GOOD IDEA, BUT COMING FROM HIM, AND GIVEN THE SUBJECT MATTER IT'S ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
