5 out of 5 stars Sad it was over.......2005-04-25

I was so happy to order this book after reading a review of it in our Sunday paper. I was sad to finish reading it this weekend because the prose, character development, and story was so addictive. It was so "ordinary" of a plot that it was easy to get sucked in, like they were people in your community or friends. There was no fluff or unrealistic events. It was truly a "slice of life". Something that happens to others, the joy of finding friends in places you didn't imagine, the harsh reality of what the South. I grew up in the South and this is so true to life. That slow paced way of unfolding time and life around you - letting it do the work and you just sit back and let it happen. I hope he writes more. I loved it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2005-03-14

The View from Delphi has become one of my favorite books. It's a beautiful story of two women in Mississippi in the 1950's who start off in conflict because of their relationship (one is a black maid and the other is the white employer's wife) but end up as real friends. It is funny, serious, sad, and downright inspirational. As a native Mississippian, I appreciated the honesty of Odell's story and the artful way he developed the characters, both white and black, in an even-handed manner. I truly think Odell is destined to be a great southern writer.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK CLUB FAVORITE & PERSONAL FAVORITE.......2004-11-16

A member of my book club chose this book and I took it with me on vacation. I was thinking I was going to "struggle" through it since it wasn't the typical quick-light vacation read!

WOW! WOW! WOW!!

I couldn't put this book down. Every night, while cruising the Mediterranean I couldn't wait to read this book!! It is a true reflection of the attitudes of the south, and conveys the subtle dynamics between people. I was transported from my cruise to the south!!

This book is one of our all-time favorites...we have also loved reading Barbara Kingsolver- The Poisinwood Bible, The Red Tent, The Lovely Bones, Anna Karinana, White Oleander, Memoirs of a Geisha, etc.

The View From Delphi stands up to all of these in a mesmorizing and memorable manner! ENJOY!!!

5 out of 5 stars Story Telling At Its Best!.......2004-07-01

As I contemplate the dizzying pace at which most of us race through our everyday lives, I am grateful to Jon Odell for giving me pause to deeply breathe in the richness of this poetic and profoundly inspired novel. Jon Odell is simply a masterful story teller! He ranks among a dying breed of writers who are gifted and thoughtful enough to tell the stories of ordinary people in a way that intimately and vicariously takes us to where they are while introducing us to ourselves. Nowhere is this more needed than in human relationships across racial stratifications.

I am so incredibly excited about this book because although set in pre-Civil rights Mississippi it is not just about the south. It poignantly tells the untold story of race in America through the intriguing lives and relationship of two complicated heroines, one white and one black, (As an African American this is refreshing to me because rarely have I read a book by a white author in which there is a black main character who is not being rescued by benevolent white characters). By honestly and vividly telling their stories-as well as a whole cast of provocative characters, Jon Odell has invited us all into a honest dialogue about our own race stories, our relationships across race, and ultimately our shared history and future as Americans. I guarantee you that, "The View From Delphi," will make you laugh, weep, and think deeply no matter what your race. Enjoy!!

3 out of 5 stars A contrast in black and white.......2004-06-01

After running away from her poverty-stricken, hardscrabble family life in the rugged Appalachia mountains, Hazel Ishee finds employment in a drug store, until she meets her future husband, a young man from a similar background, with dreams of his own. The industrious Floyd sells machinery all over the Mississippi Delta, eventually realizing his aspirations, when he moves his family into the upper-class neighborhood he covets, anxious to belong in that society. Meanwhile, Hazel struggles with overwhelming feeling of inadequacy that leaches the enjoyment from her comfortable days. Even their two sons cannot relieve Hazel`s downward spiral, which is only alleviated by the alcohol she drinks excessively. The drinking brings a whole new set of problems for a woman unprepared to deal with a successful marriage and comfortable lifestyle.

Vida's disillusionment is of another kind. A young girl from a prominent black Delta family, Vida gives birth at fifteen to the child of a white man, tormented by her sense of disgrace she brings to her family. Vida's father is the local preacher, full of fine words, until faced with the reality of his daughter's illegitimate child. When the biological father of Vida's baby is appointed sheriff he wants the child out of sight, afraid of the damage to his reputation and his political aspirations. Vida's family's fortunes fail and she is haunted by the loss of her baby. She and her brother are forced to work the land they once lived on.

The years pass, and Vida is hired as a maid to the incompetent Hazel, who has also lost a son; Vida's primary duty is giving Hazel the medication that sends her spoiled charge spinning into oblivion every morning, yet the two women's mutual need is the closest thing either has to friendship. Hazel's remaining son lurks in the shadows, spying on Vida and yearning for the attentions of his self-absorbed mother.

Author Odell concocts enough twists and turns to stand the Mason-Dixon Line on its head as Civil Rights comes to the South; just as the movement begins with Rosa Parks' rebellion, circumstances shift in subtle ways for Vida and Hazel and the two enemies eye each other warily, establishing a shaky friendship. Bone-tired and heartsick, each of them has struggled alone for far too long. Their strange relationship turns into an unexpected bonus for women who are unused to friendship or trust.

The View from Delphi is well-intentioned, with liberal use of local dialect and the colorful phrasing of the Delta, as well as the fallout from years of racial abuse and discrimination. Reminiscent of Tademy's Cane River, this novel has the same folksy dialog, if a few too many too many rambling conversations. Doubtless, this novel will have a popular following, with its unusual assortment of eccentric characters and the historical import of the Civil Rights movement. Luan Gaines/2004.

      Description:
This paper reports the final results of a Delphi study into corporate financial reporting by 2010. Twenty UK experts in accounting and the Internet representing academics, auditors, regulators, reporting companies and users participated in the study. A three-dimensional conceptual framework was adopted consisting of the role of the Internet (i.e. problem solver or problem creator), the determinant of change (technological determinism, non-technological determinism or contingency perspective), and the pace of change (conservatism, gradualism or radicalism). The consensus view was that the financial reporting package would evolve into a core of general purpose, standardised information (in both the hard copy and Internet version) together with a non-core of general purpose and customised information. Radical changes suggested by prior studies such as real-time reporting and disclosure of raw data will not occur, at least to the core package. Auditors will be reactive and cautious, and regulators will adopt a minimalist approach. The fundamental dilemma of financial reporting in the Internet environment will be between standardisation and customisation.

4 out of 5 stars Not-bad campy crime novel by an obscure but great writer........2000-01-14

"Axel Young" is the pen name of author Michael McDowell, who in the 80s wrote some excellent horror novels (with a flair for the bizarre, violent and humorous), including the "Blackwater" series, that got him cult following.

In this, his first outing on the "suspense" genre (which he parodies nicely) it's like a novel by Thomas M. Disch in collaboration with James M. Cain became a full-fledged "Valley of the Dolls" send-up.

All the ingredients for a tasty dish are here: the (apparently) ludicrous plot, unbelievable settings, facetious characters, disco dancin', nuns, mayhem, drugs, murder, bedlam, more nuns, turgid passions, sex, even more nuns... and in the middle of it, a pair of twins (Katherine and Andrea) who coudn't be more different, and yet more alike.

I recommend this book to have fun, and think that the author must have had really a grand old time writing this campy, colorful romp, (originally published in 1982) for it is actually quite good and the ending (if protracted) is no less a stunner.

Also recommended is Young's follow-up "Wicked Stepmother".

        2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......1998-03-28

This book is about as bland as you get. It's not that it is poorly written. It's just that it is one of the most unimaginative books I've read. The plot is not new, nor is it presented in a particularly interesting way. I am not saying this book is bad (it really isn't). It just isn't good enough to merit using up the time necessary to read it.

                Book Description

The ruby is the world's most precious and rare stone. For the ancient Hindus, the ruby was Rajnapura: the Gem of Gems, at whose heart surges an eternal, unquenchable flame. Yet, for all its rarity and beauty, the ruby has always been a slightly sinister stone. Indian legend says the ruby was born from the blood of a demon. Indeed, the ruby is very close to a wild, living being: fiery, passionate, and dangerous. It has been at the center of love and wars, a symbol of passion, greed, and strong magic. Ancient sages and modern crystal healers have credited it with strange powers--from the granting of prophetic insight to protecting one from bullets. It has long been part of the human journey: coveted, fought over, and feared. In Fire and Blood, Morgan considers all the beautiful and terrifying facets of this magnificent stone: scientific, economic, mythological, and spiritual. She discusses the great stones and great heists of the ruby world--and the famous fakes, too--the great Black Prince and renowned Timur. The book closes with a discussion of the making of synthetic rubies and the laser beam.

4 out of 5 stars delightful supernatural novella where vampyre meets fairy.......2003-05-07

Vampyre Abhartach yields the magical ancient sword THE BLOOD RUBY to execute his cousin Quentin Moore of Dun Drac'ola. However, instead of slicing off his head, somehow the sword shatters when contacting Quentin's neck.

Vampyre Fairy Queen Lhiannon Sidhe has waited all her life for the mating with the Sun's chosen one that would fulfill the prophecy and form an alliance between the Fae and Drac'olian peoples. Quentin, who is now her prisoner, is that warrior. He wants this sex goddess desperately but rejects her lures for fear she cannot survive their mating. As his captivity continues, his resistance begins slipping. Though he fails to cooperate, the Fae gives him The Blood Ruby, which was not destroyed when it "shattered" upon touching his neck, as he needs the sword if he to save his soul. Meanwhile time is running out for Lhiannon must mate with Quentin soon in order to conceive a child and fulfill the prophecy. However, Abhartach controls Lhiannon's sister Queen Aeval and is making life quite dangerous for their relatives, but even more so if they fail to mate and conceive.

This supernatural novella provides the audience with a deep look at two races who seem diametrically opposite as species yet share so much. The Sidhe sisters and the two cousins are fully developed though Abhartach is too malevolent with no redeeming quality to make him less cartoonish. The story line is fast-paced and those fans that want to read something new and fresh (even check the names out) will relish this delightful realm where vampyre meets fairy.

As a special bonus there is a very erotic short story at the end of this work "The Silk Garters" about a woman who has the most erotic night of her life thanks to magical garters that bring sexual fantasies to life. This is a very spicy tale.

In his fourth novel, the critically acclaimed author Adam Roberts once again produces an innovative, rewardingly different SF tale, full of extraordinary ideas.
In Adam's universe, a breathable atmosphere extends between planets, aristocrats cruise insterstellar space in biplanes, and skywhals make mysterious distant orbits. The hero, Polystom, the fiftieth steward of Enting, has always lived in a world of certainties: certain that his new wife will love him, certain that his servants respect him, certain that war will bring him the glory he seeks. Then his uncle Cleonicles--the inventor of the Computational Device, the greatest work of man, the summation of human knowledge, the explanation of the

And that is only the first shock to Polystom's comfortable view of life...

Adam Roberts is author of the novels Salt, which was shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, On, and Stone. He teaches at London University, and has also published academic works on both 19th century poetry and SF.

A good novel should often times be more than a story. It should be about something. It should have something to say about our world and the way we live. In Polystom, author Adam Roberts has two major themes to talk about: the nature of reality and our assumptions about the order of our lives. Two interesting questions. Unfortunately, this book comes no where near to giving a satisfactory answer to either.

Polystom is, more than a novel, a collection of three novellas. The first focuses on the failed marriage of the main character, Polystom, while the second follows the violent death of Polystom's uncle. The third brings these two tracks together as Polystom volunteers to help put down a sevant rebellion on another planet. As a noble, Polystom is convinced that war will be glorious, but quickly finds out how mistaken he is.

The work has some pluses. It establishes an interesting universe, one in which there is atmosphere between planets which allows people to travel easily from world to world. The character Polystom is relatively well drawn. But the novel still fails.

It fails for two reasons. The first is, simply, lazy writing. A principal guideline in writing is that one should show and not tell. Don't say a character is angry. Show their features, their actions. Let the reader discover the anger. Polystom features far too much telling, and it bogs down the work. Page after page of what is probably meant to be exciting character development could have been replaced with active scenes showing the same thing, or simply skipped all together. The second novella, featuring Polystom's uncle, suffers from this problem to an especially great degree.

The second problem with the book is its failure in matters related to the two themes mentioned above. As to the idea of the nature of reality, the book presents its arguments all in a rush, and through a long and tortured dialogue between Polystom and his uncle which plays more like a monologue. Indeed, the author seems to realize this as at one point Polystom thinks "...there seemed to be no stopping and no interrupting...his uncle." Moreover, even the points that are presented have been covered in a more interesting and thorough manner elsewhere.

As to the idea of human assumptions as to the order of our lives, the topic is more interesting. Many assume that because people exist, we must be the culmination of some grand process. Our existence is right and morally correct and purposeful, and not just a fluke of nature. An interesting topic, but one that does not get nearly enough attention. Roberts introduces the topic during the first novella, examines it somewhat more in the second, and by the third it has completely disappeared, which is unfortunate.

There were a lot of good intentions that went into this book, but good intentions alone do not make good reading. Instead, I found myself left with a novel that even at 300 pages seemed amazingly ponderous. Perhaps Roberts has had success with other works, but Polystom is not good reading and not worth a reader's time.

                      5 out of 5 stars Mannered, sophisticated science-fantasy. 4.5 stars.......2004-04-25

My first Roberts read, and it's a winner. Structured as three linked novellas, Polystom is set in an Edwardian analog to Garfinkle's CELESTIAL MATTERS, but with an information-age "what is reality?" twist. And I'm a sucker for the old "Ms. found in a [weird place]" device. An unusual, and well-written, science-fantasy.

This book is not only hugely informative, but fun to read. The recipes are easy to follow, and the tips are things that would never have occurred to me. I always thought pasta was so uncomplicated that my childhood "Mac'n'Cheese" pretty much summed it up. WRONG! These two passionate Italian cooks are the real thing, and my family is really, really glad I ordered this book! We should all be grateful that Wanda and Giovanna Tornabene consented to share their love of pasta with the rest of the world.

2 out of 5 stars Il Preferito di Peter flop.......2006-02-20

Bought the book and the first recipe I tried somewhat flopped! In Peter's Timballo pg. 158, the recipe calls to start with one cup of olive oil/8 tbl of butter and then saute the onion, etc. In hindsight it seems I'd been better off with one or two tablespoons oil and 2 of butter as the recipe went awry from that point on. All in all the dish was saved at the end, albeit a bit soggy and just somewhat like the photo on pg. 159. The great frustration is trying to find an email address of the author, publisher or agent to get this corrected or to verify the ingredient's measurements were correct. Having spent the better part of 1/2 a day putting this dish together I'm reluctant to try another with this author.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting regional pasta dishes from Sicily.......2005-11-16

I think I am going to be trying a lot of the recipes in 100 Ways to Be Pasta - these are recipes from the village of Gangivecchio, in Sicily. The book is divided into 5 chapters:

                      Quick and Easy Pastas
                      Rich Pastas
                      One-Dish Pastas
                      Soup with Pasta
                      Baked Pastas and Timballos

The latter is the most interesting to me - I have been very curious about Timballos since I first heard about them in the movie "Big Night" as a rare and kind of mystical dish that you will not find in many Italian cookbooks.

A timballo is a served during special occasions and Holidays. It is a kind of savory "cake" made with short or long pasta and layers of either meats, vegetables, cheese and a red or white sauce. The recipes in this book all sound delicious:

Baked Timballo of Anelleti, Veal and Vegetables
Veal Timballo with an Eggplant Shell
                      Eggplant and Ziti Timballo
Timballo of Winter Squash and Sausages (good idea for a new Holiday dish like Thanksgiving or Christmas)

The other chapters have recipes I have not seen in other books, mostly using the local ingredients of Sicily.

The authors give a lot of advice and the book has some beautiful photographs of the village of Gianvecchio as well as some dishes and techniques on pasta making.

Italian food is my favorite and I am very very happy with this book.

5 out of 5 stars New Ideas for Pasta.......2005-10-31

I bought this book sight unseen based solely on the quality of the author's previous books. And I bought it because I had been searching for pasta recipes that did not go heavy on the standard red or white versions. This book really delivered. A few examples:

Fusilli with Porcini Mushrooms, Aromatic Vegetables & Grappa
Ziti with Lamb, Lemon & Rosemary
Lumache Rigate with Broccoli Flowers & Turmeric Cream

September Soup with Green Beans & Caciocavallo

Capellini Timballo with Peas, Edam & Ham

Recipes are largely complete on one page and there are some photographs sprinkled throughout. Each recipe is preceded with a short paragraph by the authors giving a short personal backround on the recipe or serving ideas. Oh, and there is even a sidebar for a pasta meal for your cat or dog!

Overall I was delighted with this purchase.

Turid Rugaas' books should be issued with all puppy packets & adoption info. Her excellent insights into dog behavior bring fresh perspectives to owners/trainers of all levels. In this book, she reveals how so many handlers accidentally reinforce their dogs' tendencies to pull.
If followed, her advice really works.

I saw a seminar by this author, dog trainer Turid Rugaas. Her approach was wonderful. It was a bit different than traditional dog training advice, but seemed more in line with my own philosophies. Her advice is logical and it works.

4 out of 5 stars A great book that you probably don't need to buy........2006-05-25

Turid Rugaas is well known for her expertise in dog communication and canine language. I highly recommend all of her material. But truth be told, you probably don't need to spend the $10 it'll cost you to get this booklet. The booklet is very small, filled with a lot of great pictures and a few paragraphs of instruction. If you don't need the glossy pictures and explanations then you can get all the same information for free on her website TuridRugaas.com. Just go to her Q&A section and look for all the articles on pulling.

If you do decide to buy this booklet, you'll find that the instructions she give are clear, concise and easy to follow. And most importantly of all, the method works. The best part is that there are no gimmicks, no special equipment to use, and no harsh corrections. There's also not really anything special to her method--which is basically the "stop and switch directions" method of loose leash walking, with lots of praise and some noise motivation added in to speed up the process. Understand that her goal is not to get your dog to heel on your side all the time, but just to walk on a loose leash. As long as the dog isn't pulling, she doesn't care if it's in front of you or behind you or walking in circles next to you.

I will say that she does seem to go a bit overboard (perhaps even exaggerating the negatives) in the sections where she explains why other methods and equipment don't work. Her hatred for halters, chokers, pinch collars, short leashes, no-pull harnesses, and corrections of any kind comes through exceedingly loud and clear. She encourages the reader to use just a simple buckle collar and lots of a positive praise and reinforcement. That works for me.

                      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for dog trainers.......2006-04-18

This slight little volume contains the most effective and clearly explained leash-walking instructions I have ever seen in print. A professional dog trainer can teach dogs how to walk on leash within five minutes of meeting him, but most fail to pass their skills on to their human students. Rugaas's technique requires little in the way of training "chops," no ugly training collars and can be quickly taught to even the clumsiest, most easily frustrated students.

                      5 out of 5 stars Victory.......2005-09-02

One of the most personal efforts ever produced by the Walt Disney Studios was not an animated movie for the masses, a big box office live action adventure, or even a theme park. It was the work they provided for the soldiers, sailors, and airmen of World War II. The studio animators under Walt's direction provided free of charge the design of over 1,000 original artistic logos for the armed forces. These were used on individual planes, tanks, and ships for their crews. They also helped design unit insignias for organized armoured units, air wings and squadrons, infantry units and others. These requests were sometimes funneled through the official military channels, but more often came in a letter sent from overseas signed by a bunch of American young men. Most often the boys would send in a rough sketch of what they had in mind, or asked to use a certain animated character they favored. Other times they let the studio come up with whatever they wanted, and the artists often created new characters on the spot. No request was too big or too small, the animators completed every job. These designs were incredible and inspiring works of art, not something dashed off in a hurry.

This effort began when early one morning a fews days after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the phone rang at Walt Disney's house. The Studio called to tell him that 700 army troops had set up camp at the Walt Disney studio campus, in order to protect the nearby airfield. The long war hurt the Disney company many way, including the loss of key staff to the armed forces, reduction in commercial output and attendance, and cuts in overseas theatrical releases of their films. Despite these issues that could have caused resentment of the wars interference in Disney growth and success, the company dove in to do their part to support the war effort.

Whether it was in producing great war time comedy animated shorts such as "Der Fuhreres Face" to keep up the public morale; or educational films to teach soldiers how to operate a certain weapon or avoid disease; or deeply researched theory films like "Victory Through Airpower"; or animated shorts that promoted war bonds... the studio worked overtime to do their part. The logos and unit insignia are a big part of that effort.

The beautiful color photos reproduce the actual designs in page after page of color photos. A wonderful book for the Disneyphile, OR for those that are just interested in high quality unit design artwork from planes, etc. from WWII.

Also see the book "Donald Duck Joins Up: The Walt Disney Studio During World War II (Studies in Cinema)" to get a more complete picture of all the other combined efforts of the studio during the war, including the logos in this book. In order to see the logos themselves, the book on this page features more of them than any other book.

The Disney artist have created some of the very best military art work in the world. This book has some of the many terrific designes creaded by the Disney artists. I have been fascinated with the Disney art work ever since I had lunch with Walt Disney as a young boy.

The book "Arts and Crafts Ideals" by Bruce Smith, Yoshiko Yamamoto, Gail Ynque is for those who like the arts and crafts style and would like to know how it was started. The book takes a philosophical approach to the movement by having each of its seven chapters follow a philosophy discipline. For example chapter 2 is titled design, which could be esthetics and chapter 5 is education or epistomology. The authers have taken quotes from famous sources about the arts and crafts movement which seem to be representative of the ideals and feelings the craftspeople had toward their work. The movements common thread was anti industrialation and protect the hand craft system. Manufacturing was seen as a grinding down of the individual. The process produced cheap copies of somthing that was original. After reading this book you can judge for yourself if they were right. An arguement could be made for the same thing today. I rate this book a 4 only because of its scope. I am also a shop teacher that likes history.

                              Book Description

"This autobiography of a young man who escaped the most foreboding of circumstances and raised himself up by his own bootstraps will appeal to a wide range of readers.... His courage in dealing with and overcoming a wretched existence in Haiti and the dehumanizing effects of racism in the United States will stimulate much reflection on the nature of these two societies."

—Alex Dupuy, author of Haiti in the World Economy and Haiti in the New World Order

African slaves in Haiti emancipated themselves from French rule in 1804 and created the first independent black republic in the Western Hemisphere. But they reinstituted slavery for the most vulnerable members of Haitian society—the children of the poor—by using them as unpaid servants to the wealthy. These children were—and still are—restavecs, a French term whose literal meaning of "staying with" disguises the unremitting labor, abuse, and denial of education that characterizes the children's lives.

In this memoir, Jean-Robert Cadet recounts the harrowing story of his youth as a restavec, as well as his inspiring climb to middle-class American life. He vividly describes what it was like to be an unwanted illegitimate child "staying with" a well-to-do family whose physical and emotional abuse was sanctioned by Haitian society. He also details his subsequent life in the United States, where, despite American racism, he put himself through college and found success in the Army, in business, and finally in teaching.

I loved this book. I thought it was excellent, touching, compelling, and educational. The tales in Mr. Cadet's life are certaintly unforgetable. I cried, laughed, and lived with this book as I traveled with Mr. Cadet and his life experiences.

This book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Still shaking my head.......2007-07-13

I got this book in the mail on 7/12 at 6:00 pm. I could not stop reading it, even though I had a social to attend (took it with me) and finally fell asleep around 12:30 am. Woke up at 4 to finish it. I could not put it down. To think that what I read is all true is just overwhelming. I am encouraged by his triumph over his life struggles, but still understanding of his daily battle to fight feeling of insecurity and inferiority.

If you need a new appreciation for life or a reason to strive for more, read this book. Someone who has suffered greatly has had enough victory to encourage you to do better.

                              5 out of 5 stars Extremely Enlighting..........2007-07-07

After hearing Mr. Cadet on Oprah, I didn't stop until I ordered his book. I could not put this book down once I started reading it... it was truly a book filled with so many graphic details and the emotions that were evoked were feelings of anger, pity, empahty and sympathy that I never knew existed within me. While, I am not from Haiti I just couldn't help feeling such empathy for the children and people of Haiti who were/are exposed to this type of existence. In 2007 it amazes me that slavery, in any form, exists in the world. This book haunts at the reader to examine him/herself and see what can he/she contribute towards the world whereby the end result will be equality for all mankind. My heart goes out to all of the Jean Robert-Cadets in the world. At the same time I wonder how could his father have loved his mother so much that he would allow such treatment of his child, especially, once he was made aware of his circumstances. As for the people who contributed towards the hell of a life that Mr. Cadet experienced as a child and took that luggage into adulthood...they should know that Karma is alive, well and active.
This book, touches any and all emotions of the reader, it enlightens and paints a vivid picture of what some children have to endure on a daily basis. This book is definitely a wake up call for all people of the world to come to our senses and treat people with dignity. It brings home the fact that we are all products of our environment and we must cherish our most prized possessions, our children of the world. We, as adults, must realize that they are innocent and it should be a reasonable expectation of them to think that at the very least we will provide and protect them. I applaud the steps that Mr.Cadet with the assistance of God and his wife is taking to conquer the strong holds that his childhood put upon him.
Keep the faith Mr. Cadet and break the cycle. Life is too precious to not live it to the fullest. Continue to look towards the hills from which cometh your help...

I have been educated and taught a lesson that will never be forgotten simply from reading this book. This lesson that one will get from this book crosses all color lines. We as a people have to raise up and do to others as we would want done to us and our love ones.

reader will find it difficult to read parts of this book describing the authors childhood as a slave in Haiti. Hopefully your awareness of the real situation for children in countries other than the US wil prompt you to try to help change their situation. inspiring story of overcoming in the face of huge obstacles.

5 out of 5 stars You Have to Go to Haiti If You Can.......2007-05-05

While visiting Haiti recently on a short trip I had the opportunity to meet Jean-Robert. As a matter of fact, I did not know about the book until I had met him.

It is a great shame that Jean-Robert's story is common in the country of Haiti. I had the opportunity to meet two others while in Haiti who were restavecs who related to me their plight.

Jean-Robert does a great service to humanity by documenting and having the courage to tell of his life. I recommended it highly, but only as preparation on seeing the conditions of Haiti for yourself (don't let nay-sayers or worry worts discourage you from visiting). Only after visiting Haiti, I think, can the book be fully appreciated for the powerful testimony that it is.
