Windblown and spare.......2003-03-19
I read This Migrant Earth while attending Rolando Hinojosa-Smith's Literature of the Southwest course. Once I became accustomed to the novel's sparse descriptions and dialog driven plot, I could not put it down. The tenacity of the impoverished characters fascinated me.

^_^.......2007-05-17
This is the very first nightwing edition that I have ever read and I immediately fell in love with the story. This volume gives us the tiniest hope that his relationship with oracle might, in some way, still exist. It's a must have if you are a fan of the batgirl/robin romance.
The Hunt For Oracle.......2007-04-04
This was my introduction to Nightwing's attempts to sort out problems in Bludhaven (I like Nightwing, and just decided to read Hunt For Oracle, as opposed to other Nightwing graphic novels, because I'm also an Oracle fan, from her old Suicide Squad appearances). The problems in Bludhaven include a corrupt police force, an attack on a shady lawyer named Bendel-White by a cop turned criminal named Torque, a Nightwing imposter calling himself Nite-Wing, who fights crime by being more violent than any of the thugs he pursues, and a festering gang war that centers around the withering but still-powerful crimeboss named Blockbuster who has had his success severely marred by the mysterious online interloper known as Oracle.
A lot of characters traipse through these pages, and they all make the story great...because they all want a piece of each other. Torque gets a shot at blowing two Night/Nite-wings out of existence, while Blockbuster works his Oracle problem from several angles by hiring several hi-tech and heavily-armed supercriminals to track Oracle down to her lair. This has Lady Vic and Brutale going after Black Canary, a known Oracle associate, while a couple of bizarre electronic experts--Mouse and Giz--try to zero in on Oracle's lair so a dude named Stallion and his small army of mercenaries can close in and commit mayhem. Things don't quite go as planned--not for Blockbuster and his minions, who discover that tracing Oracle is like tracing a phantom with numerous tricks up her sleeve, and not for Nightwing, whose reluctant team-up with Nite-wing sours right about when they invade Blockbuster's home. Capture, torture, escape, surprises, murder, a talking gorilla named Grimm who would like to tear Nightwing's arms out, and soon our hero with the 'ight' not the 'ite' in his name is out trying to save Oracle from Blockbuster.
Blockbuster's final cornering of Oracle in a docked submarine is a terrific finale, now involving even more hired villains, mostly stealth-attired gunsels, but also one of my favourites, the Electrocutioner. Meanwhile, it's Nightwing, Robin and Alfred the Butler (sporting a shotgun and looking distinctly out of butler mode) on the way to the rescue...but they're delayed by lethal, armored motorcycle jockeys. And Black Canary looks like she'll be late too. Which would leave Oracle, aka Barbara Gordon who is paralyzed from the waist down, fighting the good fight alone and in the dark, until all her tricks and boobytraps and ambushes are used up.
The fact that the story is not totally resolved, but does spin off to some Birds Of Prey graphic novel (obviously whichever one starts with Birds of Prey, the original comic book, # 22) does not diminish this complex actionfest. Though I jumped headfirst into the middle of Nightwing's perilous world by reading The Hunt For Oracle as an intro, I don't regret it. What had gone before is summarized or easy to figure out, and what is left dangling--like Torque's or Nite-Wing's ultimate fates after this, as well Black Canary's little life-threatening problem--just demonstrates that sometimes it's hard to splice up superhero comics and sort them into graphic novels when there are crossovers involved (in this case, the Nightwing and Birds of Prey titles), and when the creative team is busy running subplots that can last ten or twenty issues. Whatever. The action, the dialogue, the cruel twists, the characters colliding with each other nonstop, all make The Hunt For Oracle, and Nightwing, a superior effort by writer Chuck Dixon, and the various artists, like penciler Greg Land.
Saving Oracle.......2006-03-06
In "Nightwing: The Hunt for Oracle", Blockbuster has had it with the mysterous Oracle (wheelchair bound Barbra Gordon) hassling him, so he commisions computer hackers and killer bounty hunters to find her and kill her. Meanwhile Dick Greyson has finally graduated from the police acadamy and it trying to get a job with the Bludhaven Police Department, which is rife with corruption that Greyson wants to root out. But as Nightwing he must deal with a copycat vigulante known as Nitewing, who is using Nightwing's name to murder criminals. Eventually Nightwing come to the aid of Oracle, whom he still has feelings for, and trys to help, but eventually it is Black Canary that ends up doing the most good.
This is really Dick Greyson coming into his own identity, out from under Batman (who is nowhere to be seen). Dick is still confused with his feelings for Barbara. His wanting to do good is still an intrical part of him, but it is clear that, unlike Bruce wayne, he thinks he can clean up the city from the inside as well as outside the law. Interesting idea. I liked this story line a lot, and now you can bet I am going to check out more Nightwing storys.
cat-and-mouse.........2005-11-17
Blockbuster has recently suffered his greatest loss not at the hands of Nightwing or Batman, but Oracle. He becomes obsessed with finding Oracle and killing him/her.
Nightwing and Nite-wing team up in this volume. It is Dick's hope that he can take Tad under his "wing." However, Tad shows a violent, antisocial streak when he kills an undercover FBI agent.
Oracle is nearly found, however, she runs circles around her enemies with superior planning and craftiness. She is proving to be a great asset to the Batman family beyond her impairment.
I could be wrong, but this looks like someone else started picking up the art in this volume on. Personally, I like the art either way, the main thing I like about the series is how action-packed it is without compromising the detective element. If you are picky about that sort of thing though, you might want to ask around.
Otherwise, I strongly suggest this book, and the Nightwing series.
Friendship And Love In The Bat-Family!.......2004-06-13
"The Hunt For Oracle" is volume five in the Nightwing Series that collects the original monthly comics (it's volume six if you count "Ties That Bind" but that one collects the miniseries). This volume continues from the previous one, "A Darker Shade of Justice" and it collects issues 41-45 of the monthly Nightwing and the two issues of Birds of Prey that it crosses-over with.
Chuck Dixon continues his excellent storytelling and characterization-work here. Nightwing (Dick Grayson) returns to Bludhaven after the events of "No Man's Land" in Gotham City. He takes his finals and graduates as a police officer. Meanwhile, the subplots from the previous volumes involving Tad (Nite-Wing) builds to a new level of intensity and violence in this volume as Nightwing attempts to take him under his tutelage. Also, new developments in the relationship of Dick and Clancy. Finally, there is the introduction of a new element into the Bludhaven police force (MacArnot) who may be a sleazier cop than even the legendary Dudley Soames was. For those who have been diligently following Chuck Dixon's developing plot-lines, the rewards of this volume are numerous. If like me, you like the soap-opera aspects of a monthly superhero comic where the characters grow, you'll love what Dixon is doing here.
Then we move on to the main plot. Blockbuster, the "kingpin" of Bludhaven wants to hunt down Oracle (Barbara Gordon, the former Batgirl and Dick's girlfriend). And he does that by torturing Nightwing for information and by hiring a whole group of thugs/assassins. Oracle's partner, Black Canary, races against time around the globe to save her. This story also provides the biggest pay-out in the relationship of the "Birds of Prey" (Oracle and Canary) since the series began.
My only complain here is that the book seems to end on a cliffhanger (that I believe doesn't continue in the "Nightwing" books but are carried over into the "Birds of Prey" book instead). But then, such are the stuff that crossovers are made of. All in all, the story has so much to offer already that you'll overlook that.
Lastly, this volume also sees the debut of Greg Land as the new penciller for "Nightwing"; taking over from Scott McDaniel, who moved on to draw "Batman". While I absolutely love the dynamism and crazy action of McDaniel's art after the last four books, I have to admit that Greg Land is no slouch either. While he lacks the kinetic energy of McDaniel, Land more than makes up for that in his beautiful, clean line-work and absolutely gorgeous figure-drawing. For those of us who've followed Greg Land's art since the original "Nighwing" miniseries, you'll be pleased to see how much the man has evolved and improved here (and also in the CrossGen book, "Sojourn"). On a personal note, I prefer Drew Geraci inking over Land's pencils than Jose Marzan Jr. (who is far better when he's inking over Stuart Immonen). Both inkers strut their stuff in this volume so you can make your own comparisons. Patrick Zircher helps Land out as co-penciller and Butch Guice draws the "Birds of Prey" issues. The art in this book is pure eye-candy and this book is worth the price of admission on that alone.

Book Description
This collection is concerned with the problems and pleasures of writing literary biography in the context of South African writing. Stephen Gray's introduction outlines the choice faced by the researcher: between writing revisionist history (À la Strachey) and the personal bias the portraitist must take into account when conducting the retrieval especially of lost and enigmatic figures (À la Symons). Concentrating on the unattached irregulars of the arts in South Africa - often "the" arts of their times - Gray stresses the value of the free-lance figure in the formation of an evolving colonial and post-colonial literature.
Subjects included are: "Charles Maclean", alias "John Ross," who recorded his experiences of the Zulu King Shaka in Natal's first captivity narrative; "Douglas Blackburn", rated as the successor of Swift for his satires of the Anglo-Boer War conflict; "Beatrice Hastings", polymath journalist whose lovers included Katherine Mansfield and Amedeo Modigliani; "Stephen Black", founder of indigenous South African drama in English;" Edward Wolfe", the Bloomsbury painter who began as a child-actor in the mining town of Johannesburg; "Bessie Head", who became the Botswana-based wise-woman of African literature before her untimely death in 1986, yet never knew her own origins; "Etienne Leroux", the Free State rancher who, in Afrikaans, wrote much-banned postmodernist novels; "Mary Renault" whose bestselling novels set in Ancient Greece peculiarly represented the shutdown of democracy in apartheid South Africa; "Sipho Sepamla", stalwart of the "Soweto Poetry" school which came to prominence after the 1976 Soweto uprising; and "Richard Rive", novelist, cultural commentator and liberation icon, murdered in his prime. The portrait gallery of the figures who have shaped and defined the role of literature in South Africa is both revealing and provocative, showing the route taken by some lesser-known talents in their struggle to establish the rights of authors in an often indifferent or repressive state.

Sri Paul IS a Force for Spiritual Truth.......2005-06-08
Well you know the old saying...When the adept is ready, the Master appears! This book is one I collected many moons ago and it has been on shelves, in storage and on shelves again...I simply was not at a point I feel where I was ready to believe the depth of these teachings. I was drawn to open it only after reading Tibet, Tibet which was full of necessary information for the spiritual seeker. I had no idea that Eckankar was in any way connected to Tibet. Woah! What a wonderful book. I love the simple way it explains soul travel. I have been able to travel outside the physical body since early childhood, this phenomenon left me feeling very much alone. Apparently I just needed a spiritual quide all these years. I have studied every kind of text looking for meaning, and this has made me feel very much acceptable and that I am not a...well, an outsider to put it mildly. I suggest a reprinting to any publisher who is wise enough to see that millions more are ready for books like these now. It would be a benefit to so many. Read it if you are a spirit seeker. LOVE...
A fine ECKANKAR Book written by a most excellent author........2005-04-08
This is inspirational and yet beautiful at the same time. It is a must read for any Eckankar chelas. I read the book, and each time that I rearead it, I gain a greater insight into myself and the world around me. I was amazed that the author wrote this book. It just goes to show you how intertwined our soul matrices are. As I have stated, it is a MUST READ for anyone interested in ECKANKAR. It is also an inspirational story for those not involved in the teachings. If you are interested in religion, spirituality and the development of the self, then you will not be disappointed. This is a great book to read.

Easy Access to Good Food.......2003-11-12
I began cooking from this book about 12 years ago, when it was first released in hardcover. I did not know Jaques Pepin's reputation, I simply wanted recipes one can do quickly. My bottom line on this book is that it succeeded in delivering on the promise of the book's title.
I confess I was a little cynical about Pepin's book at first. Pierre Franey, a chef whose very very impressive pedigree I did know had published, at that time, at least three volumes of quick cooking recipes based on his well-known New York Times column. I interpreted this as simply 'jumping on the bandwagon' of a popular trend. I got it anyway because the evidence of Pepin's previous books and the blurbs on the back of the dust jacket attested to Pepin's credentials in the kitchen. Little did I realize that Franey and Pepin were close friends and had worked together for many years.
Regarding thie recipes in this book, I am very happy to find the reliance on prepared foods such as the famous Campbell's soups, to be much smaller than one may expect from the introduction. I also believe that unlike Rachael Ray, Jacques does not accomplish his objective by finding short cuts to long techniques, but keeps his dishes short by selecting recipies which are classicly short on preparation. In this way, he succeeds in describing recipies with few or no compromises on results.
Having prepared several dishes from this book, I will warn you that Pepin is wise not to give any expectations about how long these dishes should actually take. While there is not a lot of prep work in most recipes, some of the recipes do require a fair amount A perfect example is the Salade Nicoise. This may be faster than the recipe in Julia Child's books, but you still need to plan for some serious shopping and prep work to get a good result.Another example is one of my favorites, his Asian influenced tangy rice stick salad. It looks simple on page 105, until you realize you need to do an ingredient preparation on page 22 which takes longer than the final recipe.
All grousing aside, this is really good stuff. The price for 200 recipes of this quality is a real bargain. My only other complaint is that the short section in the beginning of the book on stocking one's pantry is probably a waste of time. Whenever I buy anything with the expectation that I will use it in some unknown recipe in the future, I usually find the stuff spoils or expires before I get around to using it. After a fair amount of experience in cooking from cookbooks, I have learned to ignore all such recommendations and simply buy what I need for what I know I will be making in the next week.
No Ego Here -- A Title That Delivers.......2003-06-17
Jacques Pepin is known for honest, straight-forward, fool proof techqniue and advice. As the most familiar French face for most American foodies, his association has generally been with what Americans consider "classic" French cooking.
But Pepin has been touting all along the simplicity of "real" French cooking -- from his home kitchen to that of his mother's, these recipes attest to the paradigm that a few high quality products can transform a meal into something memorable.
Many contemporary food writers tout quick cooking as a new phenomenon, borne from the hectic digital lifestyles we live. However, quick cooking has always existed and been in continuous evolution for the busy individual for, sadly, time has never been on our side.
This collection of recipes, efficiently organized and simply presented all offer genuine short cuts to fantastic meals. He offers priceless insight on how to stock your pantry (although, what he recommends calls for a fabulously Martha-large kitchen), but you get the general idea of being well prepared. Practical advice on how to entertain surprise guests and making do with what you've got allows the home cook (and individual with a life) to create Mock Chocolate Mousse, Easy Cheese Souffle (a la Madame Pepin), and his daughter Claudine's favorite cake (simple butter cake, a little apricot preserves, allfrosted with vanilla pudding mixed with whipped cream)!
The book is a joy to read. Pepin is a humble, genuine culinary figure eager to offer his expertise to reinforce the love of everyday cooking. No ego here. Just good food.

Great reference.......2007-09-27
This book is really handy. It's nice that it's specific to the chihuahua breed--lots of information to help this new puppy owner differentiate between the general advice for all puppies and approaches best suited to my pup.
One of my favorite things about this book is the way it has really helpful information like diagrams of different tail positions and whether they indicate something is wrong. Great reference.

very good book, i just adopted a 2 year old chi & i love him dearly but he was not well socialized or well-temermented & this book gave me soo much information on how to correct that even though hes not a puppy and the advice works lol i take my pup to the park in the AM when dog off leash time is allowed and now he plays and doesnt hide or attack and thanks for all the chi adivce
Easy and fun to read, plus informative!.......2006-12-17
I found this book to be very easy and fun to read, plus extremely informative. It's a great book to buy BEFORE you get your Chihuahua because it puts everything into perspective. After I got my two Chihuahua puppies I carefully followed this book's instructions and my puppies immediately learned to be very obedient and it wasn't long before they were potty trained inside and outside the house. I highly recommend it!
Good.......2006-07-28
I liked this book very much. It had Info that I needed to know about Chihuahuas and how to raise them.
Best "For Dummies" I've read.......2006-03-02
This book was very well written and had everything I could possibly want to know about Chihuahuas. The author seemed very knowledgable and that fact that she used to show AmStaffs makes me like her even more. Two thumbs up.

Overpriced.......2007-01-04
My nail technician didn't learn an awful lot from this book, overpriced for what it is in my honest opinion.
Worth the cost, BEST airbrush book out there!.......2004-11-03
Thank you Elizabeth!! This book got me started, and continues to be my reference. It is sad that Elizabeth no longer teaches nail airbrushing, but TooMuchFun (www.toomuchfun.net) does and this book is a great jumping off point to the TMF training. DO NOT rely on just this one book, however. Contact airbrushing companies (like: www.bearair.com, www.airbrush.com, www.iwata.com, www.airbrushaction.com), attend trade shows, and talk to people in the field of nails BEFORE buying an airbrush system. The airbrush shown in this book is ALL PLASTIC and is NOT a good system. I bought it and SENT IT BACK. The techniques are ROCK SOLID, however, and will be a guide to you throughout your career.
Good coverage of the art and business of airbrushing nails.......2002-01-23
This book covers all the bases and gives good detail into the techniques, materials, and supplies required in the business of airbrushing nails. Several illustrations help guide you through some of the step-by-step processes. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seriously contemplating running a nail airbrushing business or is a serious hobbyist, even if you already have experience in airbrushing.
This is the book you must have!.......2001-05-06
I cannot say enough about this book. If you are a nail technician, spend the money and purchase this. It is worth every cent. I am constantly referring to this book and it truly covers everything. It covers color theory in depth, procedures, techniques etc. Of course you have to practice, practice, practice, but I feel this book is a must have.
Stunning!!!.......2000-08-13
Absolutly incredible!!! If there's a better book on airbrushing nails out there I'd like to see it!!! Super pictures and very detailed!!! I'd recommend it to any nail fans out there!!!

Great book!.......2006-03-27
This book is great for architecture students. I ordered this book not expecting too much of it, but it's really great. It has a lot of photos and detailed drawings. It's also a hard cover book. It's been very useful.
Great reference for anyone dabbling into lighting designs.......2005-09-14
For those willing to integrate a unique lighting design into their premise or commercial abode, the multiple lighting solutions and systems afforded into this literature is ideal for those willing to expand their design horizon to new dimensions..
Very useful for selection of lighting types to achieve that ideal interior feel for any area..
A comprehensive guide for lighting design.......2000-09-14
I am an interior designer who designs solely commercial spaces. The world of lighting has always been fascinating to me, and since I received only a basic education on the subject, I need a little help once in a while understanding how it works. This book is the best I've seen on lighting design. It has color photos of lighting in action, then includes details illustrating how each fixture was constructed and what materials were used. I have adapted and revised several of these details for use in my own projects. The book has really helped me to become more knowledgeable about lighting and its impact.

Book Description
Throughout her life and work, Marian Wright Edelman has been at the heart of this cantury's most dramatic civil rights and child advocacy struggles. In this stirring, heartfelt memoir she pays tribute to the extrordinary mentors who helped light her way including Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Fannie Lou Hamer, and William Slaone Coffin. She celebrates the lives of her parents and the great Black Women of Bennetsville, South Carolina- Miz Tee, Miz Lucy, Miz Kate-who gave her love and guidance in her youth, as well as the many teachers and figures who inspired her education at Spelman College and empowered her early as an activist in the 1960's.
Illustrated with many of the author's personal photographs, Lanterns also includes a "Parents' Pledge" and "Twenty-Five More Lessons for Life" to guide, protect, and love our children every day so that they will become, in Edelman's moving vision, the healing agents for national transformation.
Customer Reviews:
Lessons Learned.......2003-04-07
Marian Wright Edelman, in pleasing prose, shares the experiences she had growing up surrounded by a community of mentors, both formal and informal. Edleman talks about the importance of parents, community elders as co-parents and mentors, and the powerful role teachers can play in the development of character. Her college years were greatly influenced by the civil rights leaders of the time, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Robert Kennedy among others. Edelman shares lessons learned from influential faculty and family friends and helps readers understand what it is like to be a part of something larger than themselves.
This book, which focuses on the powerful influence that mentors can have on children and young adults, finishes with Edelman's "Parent's Pledge" and "Twenty-Five More Lessons for Life". She shares the wisdom gained from her parents and elders as well as her many years of experience working with children. Pearls such as "Always remember you are God's child. No man or woman can look down on you and you cannot look down on any man or woman or child" and "Keep your word and your commitments" provide valuable advice for those seeking a strong moral center. This book is a recommended read for anyone interested in life lessons learned from a woman of faith whose experiences have been enriched by her interactions with the mentors in her life.
Enlightening!.......2001-12-21
For centuries sailors have relied on the constellations of heavenly lanterns to guide their way. In crisp, vivid prose, Marian Wright Edelman tells us about the heroes who provided beacons of hope and inspiration, helping her find her way through the many moral dillemas of life and stay on course.
What is interesting is the sheer variety of backgrounds Dr. Edelman's heroes have. Nevertheless, they all share the author's passion for human rights and social justice. As a bonus, Dr. Edelman gives a brief history of the civil rights era, a nice complement to two other fine books on that fascinating topic, Taylor Branch's "Parting the Waters" and David Halberstam's "The Children."
This book is much more a memoir. It is a call of action and an inspiration for all of us to act for the common good, to serve the community. It is up to the current generations to act as a positive role model for the next, much as Dr. Edelman's mentors did for her.
Mentors, lanterns, are important at all times, during the economic boom of the late 1990s, when this book was written, as well as in the troubled initial years of the 21st century. There are already too many ships out there lacking a sailor to read the stars. And some ships don't even have a rudder.
Marian Wright Edelman's " Lanterns" Sheds Light.......1999-10-09
The unexpected return of her long lost college diary set Marian Wright Edelman on a quest to recall the mentors who helped her grow from a girl of the segregated south to the first Black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar. If this book were to be viewed only as a further contribution to the history of the Civil Rights movement it would be a valued addition to a growing corpus. Offering an intimate glimpse of the young participants in that struggle for justice she further provides a poignant testament to the critically important role of the not so young who inspired it. Introducing both the celebrated and the obscure Edelman permits a rare insight into the formation of character and commitment. Long the best friend America's children have ever had, in this book, Edelman serves an older clintele who are likely to find in it a powerful pull to accompany the young on the journey to adulthood. In recalling childhood teachers as well as the dominant figures of the 1960s Edelman brings wisdom, insight and strong spirituality to a much needed reflection on intergenerational sharing.
