The inauguration of a genre, big time........2002-04-03
With this novel published in 1926, Valle-Inclan inaugurated a sub-genre that has persisted to this day, with the publication in 1999 of "The Feast of the Goat" by Mario Vargas Llosa: the dicator novel, brilliantly excercised by Garcia-Marquez, Roa Bastos and Asturias.
In this great tale, the author creates a fictional Latin American country, which really sums up the basic representative traits of these lands: a dictator, the ruling elite, the revolutionaries, the foreign diplomats, etc. It's all color, fiesta, cruelty, corruption, cowardice and exploitiation.
The plot is simple: surrounded by revolutionary forces, the despotic dictator makes a big mistake whcih prompts his compadre Colonel de la Gándara to flee and join the rebels. This event unties a chain of investigations, betrayals, prosecutions and war, all in the midst of the annual festivities of the country.
Several characters are memorable: the dictator himself, Colonel de la Gándara, Nachito Veguillas and, above all, the corrupt, decadent, drug-addict, homosexual and transvestite Ambassador of Spain.
Written in an extremely baroque but nonetheless readable language, Tirano Banderas is a great Spanish novel which can be read and enjoyed today. Hint: don't miss the final two chapters, they're great.

Highly entertaining.......2006-12-21
I read these books more than 20 years ago, and decided to re-read them again recently. Originally two separate books, I was pleased to see them bundled into a single package here. As another reviewer has stated, and I quite concur, the first book leaves far too much unresolved, and the second book really cannot stand alone. It simply can't be read as anything other than one lengthy saga rather than two stand-alone books.
Elsewhere, Lawhead has been categorized as being in the "Christian fiction" genre but I must take strenuous issue with this. It pigeon-holes his work far too much and sends a message to non-christian readers that they needn't bother picking up this fine author's novels unless they share his faith. This would be a true shame. Lawhead's books are not at all typical of so-called christian fiction which is almost always written for a distinctly evangelical audience and culture. In contrast, although Lawhead's novels always contain a certain amount of spiritual subject matter such as the existence of evil and suffering, the existence of God and truth, and similar topics, they are neither preachy nor overbearing, and the material isn't really presented in a way that I would even consider to be indicative of organized religion. It's actually often presented in a much more mystical fashion that some Christians may even find mildly objectionable because it ocassionally mixes elements of paganism and Christianity.
Regardless, most Christian readers will find Lawhead's books enjoyable because the author's worldview will be largely consistent with their own and he tells a great story without resorting to profanity, gratuitous sex, and other salacious props (in that regard, he is similar to John Grisham). Non-christian readers: don't make the mistake of dismissing this and other Lawhead novels as suitable only for the shelves of the local Bible book store. It is a wonderful read regardless of your spiritual views and I seriously doubt any readers will walk away feeling preached to at any level...any more than readers would likely feel preached to by John Grisham's "The Testament."
To my knowledge, this is Stephen Lawhead's only foray into the sci-fi genre, and he does an admirable job. For those unfamiliar with Lawhead, he shines the brightest in Celtic historical novels, and I believe some of his best work is in the 5-book "Pendragon Cycle," a multi-generational saga that follows Merlin, King Arthur, and others from the famous "Knights of the Roundtable" lore. But, enough of advertisements for his other books.
In the 2-part "Empyrion" saga, we follow the adventures of Orion Treat, a sort of Joe Average from sometime in earth's non-specified future. Treat is offered 8 million dollars for reasons he cannot quite contemplate to journey to a distant planet where a manned exploratory vessel has found a planet that may support life. The vessel's crew sends several cryptic, partially intelligable messages back to earth, but then communications cease entirely. Treat's task, along with 3 fellow travellers, is to venture to the planet, find out what became of the explorers and their vessel, and report back.
--- Warning: partial plot spoilers here. Skip ahead if desired ---
To get to the distant planet, Treat's ship must pass through a wormhole, compressing a journey that would normally take years to just 10 months. However, upon arriving, the travelers eventually realize that they have travelled not just many lightyears from home, but also thousands of years into the future. They arrive at the planet not as it was when the first messages were sent back, but as it exists after hundreds of generations of people have lived and died since the first group of marooned humans arrived and began populating the place - almost like a cosmic Noah's ark. Like the first group of explorers, Treat and his companions find they've bought a one-way ticket. There is no way to get a message back to earth, and no way to return.
The novel takes us to two distinct civilizations of humans on the planet - those who chose to dwell beneath a gigantic dome in a rigid caste-like system, and those who split off to live outside the dome across an impassible desert in an Eden-like utopia. The novel chronicles the state of the decaying dome-dwellers' civilization, contrasted with the purity and ascendency of the utopian culture built by those outside the dome (the Fierri). An inevitable battle erupts as the two cultures that had remained separate for dozens of centuries poise to intersect once again, with Treat and his companions battling to prevent the repeat of a nuclear holocaust from the planet's distant past.
--- Plot spoilers over ---
It's a wonderful story that I thoroughly enjoyed, pitting the age-old ingredients of good against evil, while giving us numerous glimpses of what the world could be like if man would consistently choose good rather than evil.
My only critique is that some of the battle scenes are drawn out a little too long and this caused the story to bog down in places. Overall, the books come to a fine and highly satisfying conclusion. However, hard-core sci-fi fans who are looking for lots of cutting-edge science won't find it here. It's really a story of good and evil that simply uses science fantasy to carry us into a solar system thousands of years in the future where the age-old tale of hate and fear versus love and courage can carry itself out on a virgin planet. It's a story that could have just as easily been set thousands of years in the past as thousands of years in the future.
A superior story told well.......2006-07-31
Empyrion is an epic science fiction story by Christian writer Stephen Lawhead. Originally two books, The Search for Fierra and The Siege of Dome, the first book ends with too much unresolved and the second cannot stand on its own. The two books of this volume are in fact one story.
All too often Christian fiction is second-rate fiction but this is not the case with Stephen Lawhead and Empyrion. This story is excellent science fiction. However, Empyrion is not just the story of four travelers to an Earth colony in the Epsilon Eridani system; it is the spiritual journey that explores the eternal battle between good and evil.
While Empyrion investigates religious themes, it is not overtly Christian. Another reviewer stated that the story is rich with Allegory. I agree. Dome represents evil, an authoritarian society of demon worship and hate. Fierra, is a utopian paradise, a city populated by people who have either fled Dome or were thrown out. After years of wandering, they have come to know and love the Eternal Father. Even the air of Empyrion and Dome become allegories for purity and death.
The best fiction writers present their stories through setting, action, thoughts, and description. Many Science Fiction stories suffer from lengthy paragraphs of telling. While Empyrion does have some telling, it is blessed with ample setting details that allow you to visualize the alien environment, the bleakness of dome and beauty of Fierra.
As a Christian and a lifetime reader of Science Fiction, I recommend Empyrion to fans of the genre. Don't let the spirituality or length of the novel deter you from sharing the adventure.
Kyle Pratt
Most remarkable book I have read.......2006-06-04
Empyrion is a remarkable book. It will appeal to anyone searching for a great science fiction novel, a book with spiritual revelations, a story of the struggle between great evil and good, or someone just looking for a good read. No one aspect of the book is overbearing, and it is neither preachy nor heavy-handed on the science fiction front, making it a story that can be loved by just about anyone, at any time in their lives.
The story follows four travelers sent to check up on a four year old, other-worldly colony, set up by the powerful corporation Cynetics. On their arrival, they find two cities, and no sign of the original colony. One of the cities, Dome, is mostly corrupt, and vile. The other is serene, and peaceful. The presence of the travelers rekindles an ancient feud between these two civilizations, and sets in motion events that signal the coming of potentially horrible events. The leaders of Dome, some searching for complete power, and others fighting to keep Empyrion from spiraling into chaos, wage a war of information, secrecy, and propaganda, which teeters on the edge of full-scale destruction.
This story, like many of Lawhead's other books, has a slow beginning. The characters take shape gradually, and the plot initially moves at nearly a snails pace. Lawhead spends most of the early pages of the book describing the world of his characters. That done, though, the plot starts rolling. Because of the effort Lawhead takes in preparing the reader, you can't help but be totally engaged as events unroll. Simply put, you won't be able to put the book down. What Empyrion occasionally loses in pace, it gains in beautiful detail of the characters and surroundings. Through these descriptions, Lawhead makes the world of Empyrion real; you feel immersed in it. He brings to life the grandeur of Fierra, and the desolation of the great desert. The characters are complex, multi-dimensional individuals. They seem real, making it easy to connect with them. You can feel Tvrdy's desperation as he struggles, with his back to the wall, against an insurmountable enemy. It is these feelings that drive you forward to find out what happens next.
There are multiple plots, some beautifully subtle, that intersect and eventually weave together seemlessly as the end approaches. There is a psychological tieing together as well, giving the whole story an overarching feeling of the great and fierce battle between good and evil. Empyrion can be taken and looked at from so many angles and appreciated on so many levels that it makes it appealing to a wide range of people. Whatever way you want to look at the story, even if you just want a good read, you will not be disappointed. I was quite saddened when I reached the end of Empyrion, not because of what did or did not happen, but because it was over.
One of the best!.......2005-06-12
Let me begin by saying that I am a long-time reader of Lawhead. I read "The Search for Fierra" and "The Siege of Dome" as separate books around Christmas of 1987. I recently read these books again. While it can be said that Empyrion is an epic novel with sophisticated characters and gripping story lines, this is not what makes the book so unique. Empyrion is much more than simply a story. It is a journey into the very heart of our deepest spiritual longings for the Infinite; it is a philosophical exploration of our most troublesome questions about evil and suffering; and it is a deep expression of our inner-most desire for the only One who can sustain us in the midst of our frail humanity. The battle between good and evil is not entirely resolved by the end of the book; but this is likely because the battle is never truly resolved anyway. Indeed, the battle will remain ongoing until God Himself resolves the conflict in His own time.
A sweeping masterpiece in my opinion.......2004-02-18
Not only of good Space Opera, but of Sci-Fi/High Tech, clearly worth joining the ranks of "Foundation", "Childhood's End", "Virtual Light", "Neuromancer", "Snow Crash", and "Darkeye: Cyber Hunter". All deal with what would appear to be very real worlds of our future and, therefore, should be part of every true collector's library.

Fun Contribution to the Murder on The Reservation Genre.......2001-08-18
This book's a hoot. It is the sci fi version of the murder on the rez' genre (pioneered by Tony Hillerman.) The book takes place in the not to distance future. The Navajo Indian reservation is now a haven for hi-tech firms (mostly Asian) seeking skilled labor and tax havens.
Although the Dineh have pretty much abandonned the ancient superstition...it turns out that there's something funky going on with the sand paintings. The cops in the book get to explore the sand paintings, Navajo culture and computer technology and more.
As mentioned in another review. The book is not well written. The characters are weak, and the author never really develops the plot or the symbology in the sand paintings. I really wish the author or editors had taken the time to turn this fantastic idea into a block buster.
But if you are willing to overlook the faults, the book is an absolute riot. The concept behind the books is so strong that I give it a five star rating despite the poor writing

Interesting philosophical idea about data processing.......1999-11-11
This book was a slow starter for a few chapters but became very interesting later on. The plot revolves around a near future detective and an advanced internet for law enforcement. It then incorporates the idea that Navaho sand paintings and associated chants are an aural real world access to an N Dimensional data base left by past visitors to earth. If your interested in philosophy - American Indian history - or computers this is for you. It approaches Colin Wilsons Philosophers Stone in some ways
Clever novel fusing mystery and science fiction........1999-10-13
CYBER WAY is one of those rare science-fiction novels that, while not being a pathbreaking contribution to the genre, well repays rereading.
It fuses the kind of mystery pioneered by Tony Hillerman (in which Navaho culture is central to the plot and most of the cast is Navaho) with cutting-edge science fiction dealing with cyberspace. The MacGuffin that drives the plot is not merely a throwaway -- instead, it is central to the action and plausibly, chillingly developed.
There are a few holes -- at first, the Navaho detective treats his out-of-town white-bread Floridian colleague with surface good humor and respect but with an undercurrent of impatience and condescension that is never really explained -- but you forget about them after a while.
I wish that Alan Dean Foster would write another novel or two about Paul Ooljee and Vernon Moody.
one of the worst books i have ever read.......1999-09-20
Accidentally picked up this stinker at the airport, rushing to catch a flight. oh my god. prose that whines, bores and tires. granted there is a cute idea wrapped in all the tedium, perhaps enough for a short story or a novella, not a book. truly `a dark and stormy night' quality of writing: ``As Moody's gaze rose from the screen he noted that the wind was no longer blowing across the canyon. Instead it was now blasting toward them, making his own hair and (much more impressively) that of Samantha Grayhills' stream out behind their heads.'' the author attempts to add character development to the story, instead paints caricatures. borded and desparate to kill time i found myself skipping pages at a time to make the pace passable, to get to the end so i could throw this thing out. double ick.
Great combination of high tech and Native American mythology.......1997-08-24
A fascinating book combining the traditions of the Navaho indian tribes and post modern culture and technology, while at the same time a thought-provoking "how done-it" . The story revolves around the investigations of a Miami detective looking into the bizarre murder of a wealthy business man and its relation to a unique Native American sandpainting. His investigations take him to California where he calls upon the assistance of a local Navaho detective. While there he uncovers links to an ancient alien race, and is called upon to eliminate a possible threat to all mankind

Customer Reviews:
The best Vegetarian Book I have ever read thus far.......2007-09-23
I am not a strict vegetarian and often get confused or uninterested in the menus many vegetarian cookbooks offer.
Cathe Olson has written a simple book, easy menu's, and most of all delicious recipes.
We have been enjoying so many tasty items from this cookbook. Not only for pregnant women, but for the entire family and your friends.
Good book.......2007-08-14
This is a great book on vegetarian eating while pregnant. Will help you get all you need and has great recipes!

Great vegetarian cookbook.......2007-08-09
I wish I'd had this cookbook when I was pregnant. I bought it now that I am nursing. It has lots of great recipes to help with for common pregnancy symptoms/problems. As well as for when nursing. It seems to be a great cookbook for day to day for the whole family anyway as the recipes are all very healthful and nutrtious, yet not complicated which is especially great when pregnant, as well as a busy mom!
Just as expected.......2007-08-01
Great book - just as it was described. Came in a timely manner, and was less than I could have gotten it at Barnes and Nobel (not including the shipping of course) but being 8 weeks preggers and TOO SICK to move, it was the best route for me to take. Thanks a bunch - Love it.
A Natural Food Inspiration.......2007-04-15
Though I do not qualify as a vegetarian mother or mother-to-be, this cookbook is easily one of my all time favorites. My copy has nearly doubled in size from all of the pages I have earmarked to trial. I have already trialed the Gingery Black Beans and Sweet Potato Salad w/ Peanut Butter Dressing. Both were easy to prepare, delicious, and surprisingly filling as a main dish. The author has also inspired me to purchase a few new-to-me ingredients, such as wheat berries, for her Wheat Berry Pilaf, and some coconut oil to prepare the wheat-free Coconut Almond Shortbread. I do hope that she opts to produce a second vegetarian / vegan cookbook titled for everyone. After all, we don't want the men to feel shy about purchasing and using her nutritious book of recipes!
A few of my extra notes & tips:
This cookbook contains over 300 recipes, all of which are vegetarian, most of which are vegan/dairy-free or have vegan/dairy-free options
The recipes are fairly easy to follow, with more than half containing 10 ingredients or less. They range from extremely simple options, like basic oatmeal and homemade ginger ale, to the slightly more complex tofu quiche and gluten-free bunt cake.
This is an attractive book, suitable for gift giving to women who are expecting. It is a unique and intelligent baby shower gift, that will likely stay in their collection long after the baby is born.
This cookbook deserves five stars for layout. The font is large enough and very easy to read, recipes are typically one per page, and the format is very simple to follow.
Though the entire book is not a one-size-fits-all for special diets (with the exception of vegetarian), there are many wonderful gluten-free, soy-free, egg-free, and nut-free recipes throughout. It is up to the reader's discretion to pick the recipes that are suitable for their diet.
I am a dairy-free consumer, who is learning to cook vegan. Though the cookbook is geared more towards vegetarians who are tinkering with cutting out the dairy to go vegan, I found it incredibly useful.
Book Description
In this easy-to-use guide, Dr. Shawn Messonnier offers the latest research on both treating new diagnoses of cancer and preventing the disease before it takes the life of a beloved family pet. He details a program that includes complementary therapies such as antioxidants, herbal preparations, homeopathic remedies, raw food, glandular supplements, and acupuncture. He stresses that while no one therapy is right for every pet, boosting the immune system is an excellent complement to conventional therapies like radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery, as well as an important preventive program for healthy dogs. Presenting the reader with clinical studies supporting these treatments, or with his own extensive clinical experience where studies are not yet available, Dr. Messonnier gives readers an objective and up-to-date survey, complete with the pros and cons of each treatment, of all the integrative options available for treating and preventing cancer in dogs.

An excellent reference tool.......2006-08-16
I know I submitted a review before but for some reason it isn't here. I so want to encourage people to buy this book. Dr. Messonnier is a thorough researcher and a holistic vet with years of experience.
He explains different treatments and also preventative steps we all can take to try and keep our pets healthy.

A Must Read!.......2006-05-19
Dr. Shawn's book is filled with great wisdom and compassion. Information is a powerful weapon against cancer and Dr. Shawn proves this time and time again. Dr. Shawn's "The Natural Vet's Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs" is filled with invaluable and easy to comprehend information. This book will truly empower you as you wage battle against cancer in your beloved animal friend.
My Best Book Yet!.......2006-03-22
Well it's taken me over 4 years but in response to your requests I've finally finished and released this timely book. In The Natural Vet's Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs, you'll learn the pros and cons of both conventional and alernative therapies. I also discuss using diet to prevent and treat cancer, outline a plan using supplements to reduce the incidence of cancer in your pets, and share with you how to control pain in the cancer patient. Here are some of the wonderful reviews of the book I've received:
*"It's becoming more and more evident that natural cancer treatments for both animals and humans have had significant success. With his book, Dr. Messonnier provides a desperately needed bridge between the traditional and more natural cancer therapies. As a health intuitive this book rates a 10+++, a win-win situation!"
Carol Keppler
Intuitive Health
*"This is a truly important book, vital to all dog owners. Cancer is a leading cause of death in older dogs, and unfortunately, veterinarians are seeing cancer in younger and younger animals as well. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but with this book, you get a ton of each!
This is, without question, the most comprehensive book available on this topic. Dr. Messonnier covers all aspects in detail. While some of the language is technical, each medical term is thoroughly explained to allow dog guardians to communicate effectively with their veterinarians. The even-handed coverage of both conventional and alternative treatments provides a rational overview of the most useful therapies from both sides of the fence.
This book is easy to read and well organized. The appendices provide much useful additional information. It's an extremely valuable resource, not just about dogs with cancer, but for dogs of all ages whose guardians are aiming for optimal health and cancer prevention, rather than reacting to a cancer diagnosis."
Jean Hofve, DVM
*"Dr. Messonnier's landmark work is a comprehensive, practical guide to a subject that every pet owner should be concerned about."
Michael T. Murray, N.D., coauthor How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine
*"This book should be recommended reading for everyone who
brings a dog into their lives. Dr. Shawn Messonnier's advice on
holistic preventative care removes the mystery and fear about
cancer and replaces it with a solid understanding of what we
should do-and not do-when raising our dogs. Armed with the
information in this book, we can take precautions to help
prevent cancer in our pets, then work with our veterinarian to
plot a course of action if cancer is diagnosed. A user-friendly
book that steers clear of false hope and tells it like it is."
Joan Stewart
The Publicity Hound
I hope you agree and will use this book to both prevent and treat cancer in your dog (and yes, cat owners can use the information in here as well to help their beloved feline family members!)

INDISPENSIBLE GUIDE FOR GOLDEN AGE COLLECTORS.......2006-01-20
The first question that one may ask about The Standard Guide to Golden Age Comics is why would you need it if you have an Overstreet price guide. Good question, one which I will answer soon enough. The Standard Guide to Golden Age Comics is the 2006 edition from Krause Publications, who have been publishing outstanding books about collectibles for many years. This guide to strictly the Golden Age of comics covers titles from 1938 to 1956 with some 30,000 prices and is edited by Alex Malloy and Stuart Wells III, the same men who edit the Comics Values Annual.
The book is laid out cleanly and neatly with a comprehensive index of artist name abbreviations. The listings are exhaustive with their notations of first appearances, notable appearances, origins, etc. Only a near mint price is listed but a condition and grading guide is included to calculate prices that are not in the top condition. Also important to note that the price is based on strict grading guidelines such as CGC which is why the prices will probably seem higher to collectors familiar with the Golden Age market. This is perhaps the only issue I can find fault with. While CGC is becoming more and more prevalent every day, I still think the average collector would prefer just traditional grading, although dealers may differ with me on that.
So what makes this book worth purchasing if you already have an Overstreet? First, being dedicated to just Golden Age comics, as opposed to everything, this book doesn't have to use a minute font that you need a magnifying glass to read. Sorry, these eyes aren't as young as they used to be and a large typeface is appreciated. Second, it address a growing segment of collectors who ONLY collect Golden Age books and don't need a price guide with a bazillion different X-Men titles and variants to navigate through to find the book they want. Personally, I'd love to see Krause do a Silver and Bronze age price guide as well.
The next great selling point is the over 900 cover reproductions in full color. You just can't beat color! I also love the fact that the editors didn't just reproduce covers of the usual superhero titles but also included many more obscure funny animal, war, and romance titles. The kind of books you just don't see every day.
Finally, the book isn't padded at the back and front with dozens of pages of ads that I frankly don't care about. It's a trimmed down, streamlined guide that gets right to business and doesn't annoy the reader with a lot of fluff they'll never use. An indispensable guide for the Golden Age comic book collector or fan!

While most of us probably don't have the opportunity to stay in many of Europe's elegant hotels, we can take a peek inside them through the pages of this volume which is as luxe as the hostelrys it features.
Included are urban retreats, townhouse hotels, country inns, castle hotels, and manor houses. All are shown with both exterior and interior views.
And, all are beautiful, comfortable, and extravagant.

Pamela Lanier has carved out a niche in the guidebook universe as one of the most discerning travelers. Her Elegant Small Hotels: A Connoisseur's Guide is a selective wishbook for those well-heeled, sophisticated, world-traveled-but-not-yet-world-weary nomads seeking out small hotels with the quiet and elegance of home. And what, exactly, constitutes an elegant small hotel? Small by Lanier's standards means generally fewer than 200 guest rooms; elegant applies to décor, and as Lanier puts it, "something more... those little touches that really matter; fresh flowers, nightly turndown (with a chocolate!), overnight shoeshine, luxurious toiletries, and oversized towels ... all the myriad details that add up to the intangible quality we call elegance."
Elegant Small Hotels is devoted almost entirely to the U.S. (there are a few recommendations for hotels in Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico in the back of the book) and is organized state by state, with hotels listed in alphabetical order. Each property is treated to its own page and gets its own photo, which makes perusing this guide a leisurely pleasure. Double-room rates range from $50-$100 to $225 on up--with most of these properties falling at the upper end of the scale. Still, for those travelers lucky enough to find themselves checking in at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles or the Lowell in New York City, Elegant Small Hotels will serve as a trusted confidante. --Kimberly Brown

What a dream!.......2007-05-30
This set of Dr. King's sermons/speeches is a dream come true. To hear his powerful words coming from his own mouth is so inspirational. I'm really glad I purchased these. Arthur Dunklin, Ph.D.
Deep and moving.......2007-05-17
It's hard to believe Martin Luther King was 39 when he died. His eloquence can be heard in his famous speeches but the fullness of who he was, his spiritual depth, can only be heard in his sermons. These CDs are inspiring and profoundly moving. He is one of the greatest American preachers of all time and the greatest in the twentieth century.
Timeless lessons.......2007-02-27
I have had A Knock at Midnight in book and cassette tape form for many years, and at least twice a year I listen to them. The sermons are timeless, and make clear that we were in the presence of greatness when Dr. King was alive. Listening to this CD truly is inspirational. I have given them as gifts for years, and always receive heartfelt thanks.

Amazon.com Audiobook Reviews
These 11 historic sermons--some complete recordings of entire addresses, others reconstructed from various church services--make plain why Martin Luther King Jr. considered his "first calling and greatest commitment" to be a preacher of the gospel. As an orator he is second to none, drawing his audience in with an urgency that resonates through every soaring cadence of his familiar, powerful voice. Using insights from psychology, philosophy, and the Bible, he appeals to the heads as well as the hearts of his congregations, explaining that personal and social change can only be effected by adopting a morality of love in service of God and humankind. While King's concern for social justice is a common theme throughout, each sermon is a jewel of literary artistry, as it presents a simple problem, examines its complications, and offers a startling and often challenging resolution. Topics range from "Rediscovering Lost Values," a caution that scientific progress without moral progress can result only in a step backward for humanity, to "An American Dream," a wake-up call to the "self-evident truth" of equality proclaimed in the Constitution.
Brief introductions to the sermons from spiritual leaders and friends, including Dr. Joan Campbell, Billy Graham, Dr. Robert Franklin, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, offer personal insights into King's life, work, and legacy. An interesting note from the producers explains how the recordings of the sermons (published in a hardcover companion of the same name) were pieced together. In word and in voice, these are masterpieces of theological literature from one of the world's great orators, who Robert Franklin rightly says may well be "the greatest religious intellectual of the twentieth century." (Running time: 8 hours, 6 cassettes) --Uma Kukathas

Customer Reviews:
White and a brother of Dr. King!!.......2007-01-15
What a blessing to listen to these sermons of my brother in Christ Dr. King. Never throughout my life did I hear these. Why?
America, wake up!!! You are a great nation, because of the freedom bestowed upon us by none other than Jesus, the Messiah (Christ).
And those people, brought here as slaves (believe me I've heard it ad nauseam going through school, but just listen), have helped make us a great nation!
Now listen - we are ALL slaves - every one of us. To who? To ourselves!
If you think I'm a religious zealot - absolutely, freakin' not. I am a former slave, that's all. No more, no less. Saved by the blood of the Lamb. And now filled with the love of His Spirit, and loving my fellow man, regardless of color or background.
I look forward to meeting you in heaven Dr. King!
(Let's pray for Dr. King's constituents, that they would come to know the Lord, and love all, black and white, and gain God's strength as Dr. King did.... and keep loving one another, faults and all - 'cause we know we all got faults, but our hearts should be turned towards perfection! Thank you Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords!!!)
PittsburghPreacher.......2004-08-08
Simply phenomenal added dimension of Dr king that the general public who know him as an inspired civil rights leader must come to know. He was nspired, energized and directed by the word of Almighty God and conscience. Oh for leaders today to be likewise constituted.
A Profound Message.......2002-07-21
The sermons in A Knock at Midnight are both deeply moving and a powerful reminder of the greatness of Dr. King. This collection should be read and heard by everyone, especially the young of today who have been fed a Dr. King who somehow only delivered one speech ("I Have a Dream"). As a middle school teacher I found the sermons to be an excellent way for my students to move beyond the platitudes about Dr. King to a much deeper understanding of his life and ministry. To read and listen to these great sermons is an absolutely wonderful experience, but at the same time a sad reminder that today we have no great voice of moral authority like his. Fortunately we do have his words and voice preserved for us and our children.
I wish I could give this EXPERIENCE 10 stars!.......2000-05-04
Notice I refer to the cassettes and the companion book as an EXPERIENCE as I both listened to and read the REVEREND King! Although the media focused on the visible part of his ministry, the civil rights movement, his sermons are profound and awesome in their implications for today as well as their in their powerful delivery during the mid-1950's through 1960's. Although I will cherish both the cassette series and the book, it is through hearing the SPEAKING of Dr. King that really made me breathless! Thank you LORD God for sending us your messenger Dr. King to give us a wonderful earthly ministry for a brilliant and brief time (much like Jesus Christ). Simply awesome!
A fabulous collection of soul-stirring preaching........1999-03-24
A fabulous collection of soul-stirring preaching by one of this century's finest preachers. Many people know King as a great political leader, fiery orator, and creative organizer. This collection of sermons will convince the world that King was first and foremost an anointed preacher. His sermons ring with authenticity and resound with relevancy. Kings messages speak profoundly to our troubled times and offer both prophetic insight and divine guidance as we attempt to find our way into the next millinium. This collection of sermons, with their superb introductions and commentaries, is perhaps one of the finest efforts of its kind. It will certainly be a source of pleasure and insight for generations to come.
