Looking Through Irene's Eyes.......2002-03-29
A short novel that tells of Irene, an emigrant who has crossed over from Romania to Germany. Not a T goes uncrossed in Muller's description of Irene's thoughs. Each flower she touches is thoroughly described and each man in her life is turned out for the reader to see his level worth in her world. As Irene waits to get her German citizenship, she travels to small towns where she meets with her lovers and carefully considers the towns and the men.
It is a book of thoughts, more than it is of action. The reader gets the feeling that it was originally written as poetry.
I enjoyed the feel of the story and how it moved along. I do not, however, think I needed it to be any longer than it was. A full length novel with the story told in this way might have been too tedious.

not a total waste, but disappointing and unmemorable.......2006-06-23
After reading Edwards' novel Bright And Shining Tiger, I was immediately a big fan of hers and sought out her remaining novels. This one was something of a letdown, however. The writing itself was all right, but I found the characters and the overall flow of events very lacking. Adelinda, an independent, strong-willed, lively young woman who made a few big mistakes in her love life, when she was very young, comes to Godsland as a horse trainer. The people of that country are very repressed and patriarchal and the Church of the Quadrate God rules over everyone. Bishop An-Shai is given the responsibility of breaking Adelinda in and their interactions, throughout the course of the book, are frustrating and unsatisfying. They have no chemistry and An-Shai would be hateful if he weren't such a depthless character.
This book is somewhat entertaining--I enjoyed it, but I haven't reread it since, nor have I even gone back to it to skim the good parts. In fact, I can't remember a single scene in the whole book that was good enough to be worth rereading. Nevertheless, if you have read and enjoyed any of Claudia Edwards' other novels, then this one is worth reading at least once. However, if you haven't read any of her books yet, start with Bright and Shining Tiger--it is by far the best.
One of the Lost Books.......2005-11-22
The premise of this book was great and the characters developed in interesting and entertaining ways throughout the course of the book. The heroine is not perfect; neither is the villain. It's a nice, engaging story which manages not to be predictable. It's a shame it's out of print and I hope someone re-issues it at some point.
Good idea, but lacking in execution.......2005-01-04
Adelinda had journeyed far, bringing to the ancient West much-needed horses and her skill as a trainer. But she had come to a land of ignorance and fear...Godsland!
It was a world where monsters could be conjured out of thin air...and the Church of the Quadrate God, steeped in dark magic, ruled all. No man was safe. And women, lowliest of beings, were mere servants of the men, and prey for slave traders. To such a place came Adelinda...
She was gifted, bright, and determined--the equal of any man. But the Bishop An-Shai had not expected a woman trainer, least of all one who could not be yoked. With Adelinda, he would work his mental magic to serve the Quadrate God and defend his very way of life. Now battling for her mind, her heart, and her cherished freedom, Adelinda would have to confront not only the nightmares created by the bishop, but an awesome, new enemy--one of terrifying power...

I found that reading this book was not entirely a waste of time, but disappointing because so much more could have been done with the premise behind it. Character development was, for the most part, good, but it was rather uneven. Some subcharacters were overdeveloped, considering the amount of page time that they ended up with. In contrast, some of the main characters did not seem to have enough development, with too much being left up in the air. While I do not like being force-fed a character's personality, I really don't think that I should have to go grasping at straws, either.
The plot was interesting, but poorly developed. This could have been a really good book, if only things had been brought together more tightly, which would have left less room for holes in the plot. The premise was a good one: feisty, defiant woman meets patriarchal, controlling magician/priest. Battle ensues, at first on the mental plane, then moving to the physical. The ending was a little far-fetched, and I am completely unconvinced that the two erst-while enemies could truly resolve their differences. In other words, willing suspension of disbelief was next to impossible by the end of the book. If it had been longer, I would likely have given up reading, but 219 pages meant, in reality, that it was a quick read. The back cover promised what the book couldn't quite deliver, which was disappointing, because I'd really been looking forward to reading this book.
A stranger in a strange land.......2001-11-24
All of Edwards books are some of my favorties. In this, the heroine brings horses to Godsland and ends up in a magical duel with the priestly ruler. Both learn from each other in the duel, and find refuge together. The ending predicts their future which you can imagine yourself!

Book Description
Book Description How to make beer, wine, liqueurs, cider and moonshine whiskey. The author dusts off over 30 years of experience to tell you how it's done. He not only tells how to make darned near any kind of beer, wine, liqueur and whiskey you can imagine, he also tells you how to make the equipment to do it with. Ever wondered how a still is made? There are 8 types illustrated in this book and though it's illegal to build or possess a still, the illustrations are so complete, you could easily do it! This book includes plans and operating instructions from underground moonshiner manuals used in Mid East oil fields. Some are built with components found in most home kitchens. From moonshine, homebrew, wine and liqueur recipes, to stills, make your own cappers, kegs, scales and even a malt factory from an old freezer, it's all here!
Easy to read and humorous, this book entertains you with Alaskan tales and bootlegger's lore while you learn to make everything from beer and blossom wines, to horse turd whiskey and bathtub gin. If you could buy only one "make your own" book for the rest of your life, this is it. It's like getting a whole shelf of books for the price of one!

Beer, Wine and booze book.......2007-09-13
I wanted to like this bokk and I have used it's content many times over and it works. I was a bit dissapointed in the fact the book refers to something like "You can easily make your own yest culture to save money and we will show you how later in the book" forget it you will never find it.
When it comes to recipes on beer even how to malt and make your own gear it is great. For the wine section a lot of very interesting receipes there. For the moonshine, well let's put it like that, there is very few receipes on moonshine, there is a lot of still ideas and they are a good starting point. If you want to just give it a try you should search for "the amazing still" on google and built that first, it takes you 5 minutes to set up and dismantled to no incriminating parts in two minutes, There is little about carbonizing but instead they go the distill 4 times approach, which might be good but it is very time consuming so the most common approach which is carbonizing is not covered at all. So all in all it is a good book on the subject but is lacking a bit information to be a bible really.
ok,,, but title is misleading.......2007-08-06
this is a good resource for a beginner beer or wine maker,,, but is very light on construction and operation of a still for "ethanol".
Fantastic book!.......2007-06-18
This is absolutely the best homebrew, winemaking, and distilling book I've ever read. You can easily tell that the writer has many years of practical experience, from living in remote parts of Alaska, where making your own is the difference between have and have not.
The recipes are simple, cheap, and natural. You'll save so much money and time. I highly, highly recommend this book.
Great Book.......2007-01-18
What a great book - easy to read but very informative. While I would recommend reading Papazian for beer, the wine and liquor sections are very useful. Unfortunately, primarily covers "thin mash" liquors, which are made with sugar, and is a bit lacking on all-grain. Still, it helps you learn the procedures and concepts behind brewing and distillation from which you can experiment. Contains many recipes for beer, wine, whisky. A good read and introduction to distillation.
Great read, all-around fun.......2007-01-16
On a lark, my wife purchased for me a home brewing kit. Wanting to learn more about the subject, I decided to do some reading. The book's title is what brought me to it, but the content is what kept me reading it. It is funny and practical. It is by no means the decisive authority on home-brew, but its all around nature from real-life experiences makes it a good read. Despite the name, most of the book focuses on home beer and wine making (both legal) with just a little devoted to the theory and possible practical side of home distilling (illegal in the U.S.). As I continue to try out new things in home brewing, I find myself referring back to this book time and time again. If you have a few hours free one afternoon, and are every slightly interested in the subject, I suggest this as a great place to start.

Timeless information.......2005-09-11
As a potter struggling with raw glazing, or single firing, I found this book to be informative and well written. The writing style was amusing and easy to read cover to cover like a novel. The discussions about using recycled engine oil for fueling a reduction kiln was intriguing, and I have begun to make inquiries at my local junk dealer and oil/lube garages to see if I can reproduce it. (Synthetic oils have appeared since this was published, and there are some questions to be answered there). All in all, one of the most readible useful books on working clay that I have found.

Book Description
This commentary was begun in 1967, but most of the period from 1971 to 1996 was spent on work that was in some sense an essential preliminary to a detailed study of Aeneid 7. The work will serve as a guide to recent (and future) work on Virgilian language, grammar, syntax and style. Recent approaches to the text have been, where possible, taken into account, with sympathy but without jargon. Virgil's sources, in verse and prose, have been studied with special care and the commentary presents a coherent approach to Virgil's view of Italian religion, antiquities and topography. Unusually full indexing is intended to further the book's use as a guide to many aspects of Augustan poetic idiom.
There is a text independent of recent editions and a precise, prose translation.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent commentary.......2001-03-06
Horsfall's commentary is a welcome and much needed addition to the ever-growing number of studies on Vergilian criticism. First of all, it offers the most comprehensive, complex, and intelligent treatment of Aeneid 7. Book 7 occupies a central position in the Aeneid, being the opening unit of the second half of the epic, and it is loaded with a set of allusions and themes that both herald the new Italian era of the Trojan refuges and tie this "Iliadic" half of the epic with its "Homeric." Yet unitl recently students of Vergil were aided in their approach of book 7 by two rather limited and narrow commentaries, Williams' single volume Aeneid VII-XII, and C.J. Fordyce's Aeneid VII-VIII. Both of these studies spend too much time on vocabulary issues, they are rather erratic, and, in the case of Fordyce, rather frustrating in their inconsistency of managing bibligraphical citations, serving better an undergraduate novice of the text, rather than a more advanced student.
Horsfall himself is uniquely qualified to compose "the reference work" for book 7. This very book of the Aeneid has been the subject of his doctoral dissertation, while in the past thirty years he has published three books and several articles on Roman native tradition and mythology, early latin cults and their origin, latin ethnicity, all of them themes that dominate book 7 of the Aeneid, the very book witnessing Aeneas' arrival in Italy, and therefore functioning among others as an introduction--to us, the readers, as well as the Trojans themselves--of the native character, history, customs, and tradition of the new land and future country of the Trojans-soon-to-be Romans (cf. mainly, Horhfall and Bremmer, Roman Myth and Mythography [B.I.C.S. Supplement 52, 1987]; Horsfall, L'Epopea in Alambicco [Naples 1991]; and, ibid, A Companion to the Study of Virgil [Leiden 1995]). Turning on the work itself, Horshfall begins with an introduction covering: 1) Structure and brief summary of content; 2) Literary Sources, both Greek ( Homer, Greek tragedy, Callimachus), and Latin (Ennius, Sallust's Histories, Varro). 3) Language, Grammar, Syntax, Style, Metre. 4) Textual criticism and manuscript tradition. The exhaustive bibliography alone, which comes before the text and commentary, is perhaps as important as the rest of the book. Horsfall lists well over a hundred major works. Additional references are included in the commentary, and it would have been helpfull, since they are both many and important, if the author has assembled those in an appended reference list at the end. This confusion caused by scattered and delayed references is perhaps the only drawback of the work. Then comes the main section of the book: brief into and text, translation, and three indexes (English, Latin, Proper Names). Horsfall has incorporated in the text several ingenious emendations, the translation I found very helpful, and the wealth, acumen, and detail of the commentary would take pages to describe. Overall, this new volume comes to fill a long standing gap in the study of the Aeneid, and provide both Vergilian scholars and graduate students of Classics with an indispensable reference tool.

Great for those on their Way.......2007-03-11
This was an exciting look into the life and training of a Taoist master in China living through the Communist Revolution. While offering a compelling tale of cultivation and growth, this book also gives the reader insight into the practice and attainment of Way. It allowed me to reflect upon my own life and inner journey and gain new perspectives for my own qi gong practice. I was truly humbled and inspired.
If you practice any type of inner art or are interested in doing so, this is a great book to read.
Deep Story.......2006-02-24
This was a very good perspective on Taoist miracle working. It briefly mentions many techniques, without explaining them, so this is not a manual for learning Taoism. Some of it is unbelievable, but as a story it is excellent. It mentions many books, mostly from the last thousand years. It provokes the reader into more study.
Close the Dragon Gate.......2004-05-20
Great disservices to people whom are searching for information and enlightenment on Taoism. The authors used a map of china and a few books on Taoism to take the reader on an almost 300 page fairy tale coated to read like a biography. The characters shift personality quicker than a chameleon does color. I think there is a story in the book but the contrived situations get in the way.
Seems to be a fake.......2004-05-08
This book looks like pure advertisment of Wang Liping who is said to be chosen as 18th generation transmitter by one Taoist sect. Difficult to read because every second page I stumbled over direct or masked praise on Wang Liping / sect abilities. In the end (as expected) Wang Liping finishes with giving lectures to hundreds of students of Qigong. Special pages dedicated to how simple Wang lives, etc. Taoist teachings are scattered all over the book and don't give the impression of integrity.
One quote from the 1st page: "Over the preceding years the three Taoist masters had been engrossed in secret consultations about the matter of utmost importance, not only to them but to the world at large... trying to find a successor ...". Well after this matter important to the whole world I already assumed that money spent on book was wasted.
Quite a good tale..........2002-08-20
This is a similar book to Deng Ming Dao's "Wandering Daoist" only the story of Wang Liping's training is not embellished in the manner of Saihung. Although I'm sure the average western practitioner of Qigong will likely shake his/her head regarding some of the 'training' methods used by the three old masters it is a good reminder of what one used to have to (and perhaps still should?) undergo before getting into serious practice. It is interesting how, right from the start, Wang Liping demonstrated many qualities essential to following the Tao including great patience and humility.
The book follows his initial training including stints in a hole in the ground and under a large cast-iron kettle. It then follows his journery with his masters into the mountains just as the Cultural Revolution began to sweep across China. Along the way many lessons are imparted including some interesting methods of cultivating with trees. The main portion of the story ends with Wang Liping's return to his village and subsequent marriage (!) as his masters admonish him to carry on the way in a form suitable for the new age.
The book finishes with some commentary on Wang Liping's present activities including some stories from his group training sessions - some of the first held in China as strict controls on Qigong began to be lifted.
I enjoyed the story as well as the information contained in here. There are some great views on meditation, including the aforementioned tree style, in addition to the overview of his training. There are also some very interesting tidbits about the location of the lower Dantien shifting in relation to the cultivator's distance from the equator. There is also an interesting comment that there are meridians within the body that are not terminated - that is, they are open to the universe.
