Book Description
Alexandra Verazzano flees to the Canadian high country, running from a brutal divorce and the uncertainty it has wrought. Her personal struggle resonates, becomes universal, then crosses that line between woman and beast to mirror the battle of Survivor, unique timber wolf, and his environment.
Despite the fact that reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone has re-balanced the ecosystem in just ten years, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana has legislation that will once again endanger the wolves' habitat and survival. Due to the paranoia and misinformation circulated about wolves, Woman's Sigh, Wolf's Song has particular contemporary resonance. Additionally, this story resonates with universal themes of personal struggle, survival and courage.
Customer Reviews:
Profound attention to facts and stunning action situations!.......2006-09-25
As a professional with a very busy life, I can't imagine a pleasure journey better than this. This was a real page turner for me. The authentic details of this story and the compassion I felt for the colorful characters, the intimate connections between human and beast, and the complex romances, made this a real emotional rollercoaster ride. I got angy, I got sad, I felt sorrow and love. For all you busy folks out there who want a great read, I can't imagine a better way to spend what little leisure time I have and look forward to more from Ms. Madison!
Woman's Sigh, Wolf's Song.......2005-06-27
It's hard to believe this is Kathryn Madison's first novel. I particularly appreciated the adjectives she used throughout the book - the book was alive! In fact, there were a couple of times I had to put the book down just to let my heart rate get back down to normal. Even though I don't ski or SCUBA dive, when reading her book I felt like I was right along side the characters, whooshing and diving. A thought provoking, vital, and entertaining book.
An exciting interweaving of human and wolf storylines.......2005-06-03
This book is mainly seen through the eyes of a woman, Dr. Alex (a vet), and a wolf, White cub, who later earns the name Survivor. These two stories begin separately and later join together. The interweaving is superbly done. I can't remember enjoying seeing the world through a wolf's eyes so much since I read Jack London's White Fang many years ago. The protagonists are well characterised and highly likeable, as are some of the other characters. There are also some villains worthy of boos and hisses. The story itself is believable, gripping, entertaining, and moving.
As a bonus, there's a great depiction of forest fighting in the book. I live in a rural area which recently got through a forest fire, so firefighters are my heroes, and I very much enjoyed the description of the smoke jumpers.
Completely captivating read.......2005-05-06
It's been so long since I've found a book to captivate me like this one. From start to finish, the author holds you with stories of this woman veterinarian's life. From her marriage ending to how she picks up the pieces by embracing her life work, the obstacles that she overcomes - the fascinating details of the sharks, the firefight, the wolf hunt, - and the spellbinding relationship with the wolf that evolves. This book has many elements working for it - the human and animal survivors connect, and then connect you. Great read, highly recommend it to everyone.
A grownup's book that will quickly engage.......2005-03-11
I really enjoyed this book. My wife and I tend to choose very different reading material, so when I slipped this one from her recent acquisitions, I had no special expectations. I must admit, I would not usually have found the "Woman's Sigh" portion of the title especially appealing. I was, however, interested in the apparent wolf theme. When I finally replaced it in her collection, I considered what a pleasure it had been to discover that this book really went the distance for me, and that perhaps my wife and I had struck the same chord.
There is a lot of grit and excitement here. I had begun warily, expecting to find an abundance of emotion, but when it was amply delivered, I didn't mind. I would predict that most adult readers are going to connect, as the author skillfully and spiritedly answers fate with resolve. For me, she finds unique perspectives and breathes new life into old lessons about vulnerability and strength, all the while weaving a fascinating tale.
Upon discovering the dual nature of the story, I had a moment of apprehension, half expecting it might serve to distract. To the contrary, the stories are a splendid complement to each other, and I sensed not an ounce of contrivance. The shifts are deftly timed, and were received with pleasure by this reader.
This book has a lot of dimension, but that challenge is readily handled under Madison's pen. She courageously and effectively offers the reader a story of terrific scope.
Those with no penchant for wildlife themes shouldn't be put off. There is a lot more happening here, and I think that you will likely be drawn in.
Sharing one man's perspective, I found this book to be a page turner, and I spent every available moment with it to the finish. What an auspicious start! I will be looking for more of this author in the future.

A WORLD OF TROUBLES--TIMES TWO!
When Matt Mantrell--Her Majesty's Wizard--conjured himself from magical Merovence to his hometown in New Jersey, he discovered that vicious drug-dealing gangs had reduced the old neighborhood to a wasteland--and forced his parents to the brink of destitution. For Matt, the only answer was to transport them safely back to Merovence with him.
But the Mantrells weren't the only ones moving to Merovence: While Matt had been away, an army of Moors had invaded. As Queen Alisande led her army forth to engage the enemy, Matt launched his own campaign--with the aid of his fledgling wizard parents, the faithful dragon Stegoman, and a hapless tagalong thief. They sought to root out the real enemy behind the mayhem, even if it meant grappling with djinn, matching wits with a Moorish military genius, and trading spells with sinister sorcerers. For this enemy proved to be a cunning and deadly wizard--one who served the most evil master of all . . .
Customer Reviews:
Another hit from Stasheff.......2007-04-26
This is a great follow-on to the Her Majesty's Wizard book that kicked off the series. This is the fifth in the series.
Stasheff is a master of his genre and can't seem to write a bad book that involves magic. If you liked the first book, you'll also enjoy this one.
Our hero, Matt Mantrel, spends time in both Merovence and New Jersey as he chases down the bad guys in both worlds and deals with supernatural beings.
Ben Bova said that the best way to write a story is to heap problems onto your main character and keep him/her off balance by introducing new ones every time s/he thinks s/he's got one solved. Stasheff does this very well.
Funny and worth reading.......2002-09-07
Stasheff seemed to have contradicting ideas about what Matt's parents would be like until he brought them on board in this book, but I can forgive him that, and the occasional shifts in POV he makes to explain their backgrounds without decent transitions. Suffice it to say, who knew Matt had such gorgeous parents who were deeply in love with each other and really good spellcasters?
Stasheff Delivers!.......1998-02-13
For everyone who loved the Wizard in Rhyme series, this book is a must read. Stasheff provides all the fun and action packed reading put into his first four books, adding more magic and mystery than before. Truly a recommendation for the Christopher Stasheff fan!
If you like the first four books, you will like this one.......1998-01-18
The book started a little slow, but ended very good. I liked how Mr. Stasheff bought in Matthews parents and made them wizards, too; and how he is developing the types of wizards. The book was very good, and was a enjoyable division.

Customer Reviews:
Good recipes, times misleading.......2007-09-10
I've now tried 4 of the recipes in this book, and they've turned out nicely. Pictures are good too. The one thing I have a problem with is that the prep times don't include prep - because the ingredient list contains already prepped items, such as 1/2 c celery, chopped, or 8 oz chopped sun dried tomatoes- items which I actually have to prep, and many of them just don't come that way. I still highly recommend this book for fast delicious recipes - just add an extra 10 minutes to the times. (The molten cakes on the cover are easy and delicious).
What a great cookbook!.......2007-05-17
I saw a similar cookbook while visitng a friend. It was out of print. This one is even better with great, easy & quick recipes. Every one I have tried has been a hit with my family.
Southern Living Ultimate Quick & Easy Cookbook.......2006-08-09
This is a great cookbook. My sister-in-law recommended it to me. I made a shrimp dish for my friends and they also requested a copy of this cookbook. The other day the same friend told me it's her faviorte cookbook. The recipes are easy to understand, easy to prepare and are very tasty.
Quick doesn't have to mean processed.......2006-07-27
I like flavor! I love to eat good food! And I am all about saving time but come on- does this mean I have to use so much tasteless processed food! Very disappointing.
Very Disappointed.......2006-03-02
I've loved other Southern Living cookbooks and read some reviews that greatly overrated this book's appeal. I wasn't able to preview a copy at my library and was very unhappy with the results. Boring pedestrian recipes that might be quick and easy but look tasteless and boring. I was hoping for some quick innovative ideas but instead was presented with many recipes that involved mixing "a can of" with processed frozen foods. Yuck!!! Definitely not up to the usual standards of Southern Living.

How Your Horse Wants You to Ride, good advice.......2007-08-09
How Your Horse Wants You to Ride: Starting Out, Starting Over
If our horses could have a verbal conversation with us, it would be about how they want us to ride on their backs. So, if that is the information you are looking for, this book will do that for you. Coming to horses late in life, with only weekend trail riding and no ownership in my background, learning to train my horse and ride her has, at times, been overwhelming. All bad habits that horses have are from bad training, not from stubbornness or naturally occurring mean spiritedness. Every interaction we have with our horses teaches them something, good or bad. Gincy is a patient person, I know from interacting with her on her Riding with Confidence list group on Yahoo. She has great insights into muscle memory, fear, breathing, etc. and the way those things cause horses to react in one way or another. How Your Horse wants you to ride is not a quick fix answer. It is deep and thoughtful requiring work on the part of the owner/rider. The reward is as great and worth striving for. After all, if you have a horse, you want to have fun with it, not be fearful of it.
Usable "Centered Riding" plus some.......2007-05-30
This book has inspired me to work on bareback exercises this summer to retrain my balance. I'm sure my horse will thank me. Having ridden with the author when I was a teenager (40 years ago), I remember the value of the bareback riding after this book reminded me. I have tried to read Sally Swift's "Centered Riding" but just didn't engage me. This book has and I will be applying the lessons to myself.
Great book for riders at all levels.......2007-03-08
I started riding quite late in my life and this book has been a great help to me. Whenever I encounter a problem I consult it again and it always gives me new ideas which work. I like especially the mixture of at home, on the ground and on the horse exercises. You can try basics safely first before you mount your horse. I am a Western rider and although its focus is English riding I was able to use it.
Starting Out, Starting Over.......2007-03-07
In clear consise detail the author puts her over 30 years of experience into the student's hands. She takes you from the first meeting with your horse, on through to the clearest description of the use and purpose of aids I have ever read. This book is in my hands before and after every lesson, and evenings in between. The more often I go through it, the better I get.
Ms Bucklin is famous for her Seven Steps, which are a "must know" for safe and balanced riding. And if she did nothing else, she made clear to me the importance of grounding, centering and balance. The book is empowering because technique rather than athleticism is stressed and for one returning to riding at the age of 66 I am grateful. The pictures clearly show the correct positions which the student can then emulate and the author communicates her knowledge of the sport with encouragement and love.
Absolutely a must have book!.......2007-03-06
As a beginning rider with my first horse this book is at the top of my list! I'm well over 40 yrs. old and suffered a major horse wreck a couple of years ago, breaking my back in 5 places, pelvic bone in 3 and leaving me with a bit of a fear problem as well. But, my dream for over 30 years has been to own horses so I pushed forward. While I've ridden for quite some time, I do feel like I'm a beginner because all of my previous riding was simply get on, kick to go, pull to stop!
How amusing! This book gives you so much very needed information to help you in every aspect of horsemanship. From the ground to cantering and more importantly the very important confidence that you need. I really can't say enough about this.....simply an excellent book! Written in a manner for any level of rider. This one will remain at the front of your bookshelf!
