Ironic glimpses of inter-World War Vienna.......2005-07-26
A supposed "novel," Yellow Street strings together five short stories by Veza Canetti, the wife of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Elias Canetti (Auto-da-fé, Crowds and Power). They were originally published serially in a Vienna Marxist newspaper, Arbeiter Zeitung in 1932-33 (that is, before Hitler came to power in Germany, let alone Austria). Some of the characters from the first four stories reappear in the fifth (and best) "The Fixer."
All are set on a street of leather merchants in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna. The stories focus on lower-class women who are oppressed by middle-class women and on husbands seizing and squandering the inheritances of dutiful, unpretentious wives. There are wry twists, especially in the oblivious young girl's actions in "The Fixer" and the denouement of "The Canal" and "The Tiger." The hardest-to-take tale of unscrupulous grinding down is "The Ogre." The stories fill 126 pages.
Although set later and in a lower-class milieu, these stories recall the earlier ones of the Viennese master Arthur Schnitzler. All are based on real characters and events. The household division of labor left "invention" to her husband (though most of his books are nonfiction, including his great three-volume memoirs.)

Book Description
*From the prolific creator of 18 manga titles including the best-selling series Escaflowne *TOKYOPOP to release animated series on DVD Fall 2005
Ai is in for the fight of a lifetime when two specialists from A.D.C. come the Psychic Academy in search of those that possess the "aura of light." In order to demonstrate his powers, Ai must fight one of these "professionals." However the stakes are high: If he loses the battle he will be sent to A.D.C. in America--away from his friends and family!
Customer Reviews:
I DON'T WANT TO GO TO AMERICA!.......2005-11-26
As Volume 6 of Psychic Academy begins, Ai is locked in a fight with an agent from ADC, an organization that experiments on humans with aura power in a bid to give psychic abilities to ALL people. While this might be a worthy cause, the scientists have no qualms about ruining the lives of their subjects and making them outright captives. ADC has come to Psychic Academy because of the stories of Ai possessing a "light aura". If he loses the battle, he will have to leave his friends behind and go to America, where he will become the prime test subject for ADC! On a more romantic note, Ai is still dealing with the fact that the girl in his long ago dream of his first love was not Orina, but Mew! And she's starting to regain some memories from her own dream.
Psychic Academy continues it's more adult take of a Harry Potteresque adventure which is heavy on fan service but always remains firmly rooted in action and good-natured comedy. Don't get me wrong, it's not a harem comedy. It's more shojo, focusing on the triangle between Ai, Mew, and Orina. Ai loves Orina, but feels a bond beyond words with Mew....or maybe he loves her too. Hopefully, by the end of the series, this will be settled. The characters are intriguing and likeable and the art suits the manga with its more sexy take of a Tezuka-like cartoon style.
Sexy with a mix of magic!.......2005-01-15
This is one of those series that has the poor main character grabbing the girl's breats all the time even though he doesn't mean to! By this point of the series, Ai is realising that it may be Mew that was on the beach with him in the dream, not his girlfriend. So he's wondering now what he should do. Read and enjoy!

Pleasantly Surprised.......2000-04-05
When I first saw this book ( misplaced in the travel section, I might add ), I got very upset, seeing as how Batman is truly ONE of a kind. Turns out, however, that the writers were talking of the bad guys when they titled the work. Anyhow, it must've been a bad week for the artist. Although Batman looks impressive as always, the Riddler is drawn like a bean pole after a forty day fast, and his weight apparently has been shifted to Miss Catwoman who comes across like Kristy Allie in spandex. But these nauseating thoughts aside, the book is most enjoyable to read ( as long as you're not eating ).

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
While the title How to Be a Domestic Goddess may at first make a modern woman bristle, the book itself is just as likely to inspire the woman who brings home the bacon to start baking cakes. And what's wrong with that? "This isn't a dream," writes British cookery deity Nigella Lawson in her preface. "What's more, it isn't even a nightmare." Lawson--the author of How to Eat, food editor of British Vogue, and star of her own TV cooking show, Nigella Bites--has been suspected of upholding the woman-laboring-in-the-kitchen paradigm, but there are lots of hard-working women out there who derive great satisfaction from cooking, even after a long day at the office. For those women, Lawson, who looks more Elizabeth Hurley than Martha Stewart, is the perfect guide to the wondrous world of baking.
"You know, I'm not a cook-to-impress kind of girl," Lawson says midway through the book, but she must admit there are few things more rewarding than putting a warm homemade pie or fragrant cake on the table--especially after preparing a home-cooked meal. How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking makes just such a reward possible, in fact positively enticing, with its delicious selection of easy-to-make cakes, pies, cookies, breads, even jams, presented in Lawson's chatty, pleasantly glib manner. Turns out, you don't have be a Pierre Hermé to make to-die-for chocolate confections; nor do you have to spend hours "faffing around" with hot pans and jars to have jam at teatime. You just need to try baking once, then again, and next thing you know, you'll be turning out cookies and desserts every chance you get. Many of the recipes are hand-me-downs or adaptations from other sources, be it a favorite cookbook or a restaurant in some far-off region, but all are imbued with Lawson's wit and distinctive touch. Profiteroles, My Way are "monumentally impressively better" than the original, thanks to burnt-sugar custard and toffee sauce. Her Coffee and Walnut Splodge Cookies are "American-style cookies; in other words just dropped onto the baking sheet free-form," and so on.
A sophisticated female alter ego of British mop-top Jamie Oliver, and considerably more sly and comedic than most American gourmets, Nigella is sure to convince more than a few up-and-coming hostesses that baking is indeed women's work. --Rebecca Wright
Book Description
The trouble with much modern cooking is that the mood it induces in the cook is one of skin-of-the-teeth efficiency, all briskness and little pleasure. Sometimes that's the best we can manage, but at other times we don't want to feel stressed and overstretched, but like a domestic goddess, trailing nutmeggy fumes of baking pie in our languorous wake.... --from How to Be a Domestic Goddess
How to Be a Domestic Goddess is not about being a goddess, but about feeling like one. What this deliciously mouthwatering cookbook demonstrates is that it's not actually hard to bake a pan of muffins or a sponge layer cake, but the appreciation and satisfaction they bring are disproportionately high. Filled with over 220 gorgeously illustrated recipes, this book understands our anxieties, feeds our fantasies, and puts cakes, pies, pastries, preserves, puddings, breads, and cookies back in our own kitchens. The domestic goddess has to maintain her (or his) cool when faced with pastry, of course -- but with Nigella Lawson's guidance, even puff pastry can be pain-free.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE IT!.......2007-08-28
I am not a baker, but each recipe is clearly explained. Nigella does a good job of letting the reader know what to expect after every step so the possibility of making mistakes are very low. I'm so happy that I chose this as my go-to baking book!
Excellent!.......2007-07-27
Beautiful photographs, excellent recipes, this book will get used over and over again... The London Cheesecake is the best cheesecake I've ever had.
What a feast!.......2007-06-28
I bought this book in a hurry one day based solely on the title. I wasn't disappointed. This is the most fun I've ever had with a cookbook. I've tried more recipes out of this book than any other cookbook I've owned and after two years continue to turn to it. Nigella's writing is beyond unique - what a pleasure to read, let alone to cook. I've also given this book as gifts several times and have received so many comments on it after about what a great gift it was it continues to be in my "good gift ideas" stock pile. Worth the money!
Aims high, but misses the mark in many instances.......2007-04-27
This book is beautifully presented and has some real winners, but it would have benefitted from more careful editing and testing. I'm glad I took the time to look up 'self-rising cake flour' as it seems many disappointed reviewers did not, with disastrous results. To make self-rising cake flour, simply add about 1 tsp of baking powder per 1 cup of cake flour -- if you substitute regular cake flour, much more common in the US than self-rising, your cakes will not rise properly. I do think that the editors might have anticipated this problem, and made a small note in the US version of the book to help novice bakers. I've had great success with the Victoria Sponge and it's variations, particularly the butterscotch cake -- delicious!! I also liked the onion pie that another reviewer found underwhelming, but was frustrated at the consistency of the crust -- I followed the recipe carefully, but the crust was still impossibly soft -- I had to scoop it onto the onions, cobbler-fashion, rather than patting it out and draping it, as instructed. I also recommend increasing the thyme and using sweet yellow onions, as red onions have a bit of a grayish cast after prolonged cooking. Serve with a green salad for a very nice lunch indeed! Today I made the 'burnt butter brown sugar cupcakes' and found that the recipe makes only 9 cupcakes, rather than the dozen promised, and I had to scrape every last bit of batter to get those! Since this is for my youngest child's 1st birthday, I'm a little disappointed that there won't be 1 for each month of his life, but if the aroma and appearance are any indication, these will be delicious! To be fair, they did rise quite a bit and I suppose I could have eeked out a dozen smaller cupcakes, but next time I'll increase the recipe by half. I can't recommend this for novice or timid bakers, nor for blind followers -- be sure to read through the recipe and compare mentally with your knowledge and experience before beginning.
Love, love, love this cookbook!.......2007-04-10
I received this book as a gift a few years ago and can honestly that I have tried at least 75% of the recipes. I was always intimidated by baking (after numerous basic cake and cookie disasters) and before this book, would never have attempted recipes that appear so challenging. Nigella is a wonderful writer who takes the intimidation factor out completely by using a down-to-earth tone. It feels like you are baking alongside an irreverant, sassy girlfriend!

Customer Reviews:
hmmm.......2007-03-26
I love this book but I just made the autumnal cake and it turned out really messed up I have reread the recipe quite a few times and now Im going to check the website because I know I didn't do anything wrong the coconut macaroons turned out awful as well. she should really have a warning with the corrections sent out or something
A very entertaining cookbook.......2007-03-19
This book is full of great recipes but also is very entertaining. The author is very laid back and fun! She takes all the stress out of cooking.
I love Nigella...........2007-03-02
And have used several of the recipes in the book without any problems. I am culinary school trained and find her recipes both creative and tasty. I think it is def worth a second try if you have had issues....
B.B. (Buyer Beware).......2007-01-05
I love Nigella - and no, I am not a stalker! I love her cooking shows, which are fast-paced, fun and very well produced visually. I love her columns, though I always have to read them with considerable delay. I love her books (well at least How To Eat and the object of this review) because they are chock-full of great recipes and wit.
However, as other readers have pointed out, some of the recipes in this book give incorrect amounts for the ingredients, which often results in a big disaster. I have made the blueberry muffins and the orange chocolate cake and they turned out awful - the muffins were not sweet enough and had to be heavily smeared with jam; the cake was inedible, I had to throw it away.
However, I made the banana bread (with cocoa and chocolate chips for my 2.5-year-old twins), the Madeira cake, the spice cake in the Christmas chapter and the rocky road chocolates from the Children chapter, and they all turned out pretty good. I also tried out the white bread recipe shortly after buying the book when it came out, and it was a better recipe than average. Finally, I made the strawberry jam, which was very good too - and very easy. So it's not all bad.
In order to keep track of things, I have begun sticking post-it notes on the recipes that I try out with comments on what can be done to improve them (needs more sugar, never make this recipe again, good bread etc.). I know this can sound like a pain in the neck, but many of the recipes in Nigella's archive are the result of "tweaking" other recipes, changing quantities, adding ingredients, so I feel like I am keeping with the spirit of the book.
buy the hardcover.......2006-12-01
I completely ignored the marketing for this book, not even the television program influenced me to pick it up. I only bought this book and the how to eat book with Feast because of a successful chocolate loaf recipe from her current television program. Domestic Goddess is a good book. I recommend it over Feast which uses a lot of recipes from her past books. I read a recommendation that a cookbook should have at least one good recipe that you like to make repeatedly for it to be a good purchase. I've made one of the easiest recipes in the book, coconut macaroons. It may not be the best recipe in the book but at least it got me started and sometimes it is hard to get me started.

Unfortunately, we as people often fall short. Dogs rarely do. Tracie Hotchner has written a book that will help us keep up our side of the bargain.
--Dr. Barry C. Browning, B.V.M. & S., M.R.C.V.S.
I believe Ms. Hotchner was a dog in a previous life. Her perspective is that detailed and complete. Since I speak "dog" fluently and converse with my three canines, Lucy, Henry and the "diva" Frances, we have agreed that it is the finest book about dogs ever written.

Customer Reviews:
The BEST!!!.......2006-09-21
I LOVE the Dog Bible. It actually is a means to calm down, get control of our human emotions and realize that the stress we are feeling is normal; that our pets are our kids; that we need to love them & realize that WE must learn to communicate BETTER. Bless the author for this fabulous insight into man's best friend.
Very Helpful Book.......2006-08-27
The Dog Bible is a very complete, easy to follow guide to all things dog. It proved very helpful in training my family's willful Pomeranian puppy, and I plan on using it to train my own puppy. An excellent value!
she's an expert on being an expert!.......2006-07-22
This is the same author, childless herself, who has sold many copies of her books about having a baby, with the same kind of know-it-all authority and poor advice based on absolutely nothing. Hotchner has no credentials, and she also has no real insights or tremendously thoughtful or original points to make about raising and training dogs, which would in fact be credential enough. She has some very silly ideas about dog nutrition and lots of other dubious and wrongheaded advice on training, and she does like to talk about herself. She is a true dog lover, it seems, and her advice is probably a bit more sound than her baby advice was in the past, but why buy this particular book?
Latest, Greatest.......2006-05-06
Each time I go to use my Dog Bible as reference, I get lost in it, following threads of interest. Enjoying all the latest info, and the author's opinions on subjects from behavior and specific breeds to debate on vaccination. Even dog people who believe in their good understanding (or maybe especially those) of what makes a dog tick, will find a useful perspective in this book! Everyone with or without dogs should have access to the Dogs and Children chapter and Scooby's rules for kids.
For a book that calls itself the Dog Bible, I'm not a believer.......2006-04-29
Any book that insinuates that people that own pit bull type dogs (APBTs, Staffies, etc) are either macho, are unintentionally trying to put their families at risk, or just plain criminal gets a thumb down from me. Furthermore, any author who seems to have very few credentials in dog behavior (she's not a vet, a behaviorist, a trainer, or a biologist) and ostensibly calls her book the Dog Bible and actually believes that the majority of pit bull attacks were seemingly unprovoked either a) has no idea about dog behavior and knows the other factors going into any dog attacks (pit bull or not) and/or b) is foolish enough to believe the media pot stirring over these dogs is just plain stupid or maybe secretly afraid of these dogs. I don't own a pit bull myself, but I have a Belgian Malinois and a Siberian husky/Rottweiler mix. I appologize to Ms. Hotchner for not owning a dog that's a shrinking violet. Sorry, I'm surely I'm up to no good.

The definitive up-to-date book on watch I.D. and prices.......1998-04-13
This is in its 18th edition. For the authors watches are their liveliehood and their passion. The number of photos is unexcelled although there is always room for improvement, the text at the beginning gives the beginner the knowledge and the glossary at the end a quick reference for terms. It is heavy on pockets but, also chock full of pictures on wristwatches and their prices, the industry almost standard (the market rules) For the money a hard book to beat if you buy more than one watch a year will save the buyer much more than the price of the book many times over. This IS the book to buy without question - universal among hobbyists and collectors alike.

Customer Reviews:
Easy!.......2007-07-20
I have to admit that I'm kind of embarrassed that I didn't think of some of these ideas myself. They're so simple! But they're very effective. There are lots of ideas in here for producing some interesting backgrounds for your scrapbook pages or other art projects.
Great Inspiration and ideas.......2007-05-10
I just ordered this book and already I have found things I want to try and create. This book is a FANTASTIC addition to my scrapbooking library. I feel from the step by step instructions I can create my own pages and have fun making my own paper. This book shows me that I can take basic items from home and my scrapbook supplies and make my own special paper to enhance the story for my photos. I also think it will help me try new things that I was always afraid to try. MY 8 year old daughter is excited to try these techniques as well. I think this book is not only for scrapbookers but for all papercrafters and artists.
Simply Amazing!.......2007-04-13
This book has changed the way I view my scrapbook pages and layouts. Melynda uses ordinary household items (who would have thought to use bubble wrap?) to make extraordinary designs that will make your scrapbook stand out from the crowd. No longer content to choose paper from the local store, I've been challenged to design my own so that my scrapbook is truly unique to me. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are clear. They are easy enough for even the most novice of scrapbookers to follow along with to create their own works of art! I recommend this book to the scrapbook artist who wants to move to the next level.
Creative Colorful Book!.......2007-04-13
Painted Scrapbook Pages is an attractive, interesting, and
helpful book. Any scrapbooker, from the novice to the expert,
can use these helpful hints to add creativity to their personal
scrapbooks. The book includes clear pictures, a list of
materials and tools, which are easily accessible, and step
by step procedures. Each technique also includes pictures of finished
layouts for ideas on how the technique can be used in a
scrapbook. I purchased a second copy for my high school
library for the art students and scrapbook enthusiasts.
Awesome!.......2007-04-12
This book was very interesting and it gave me lots of ideas that I can use in my own scrapbook...plus the layouts and pictures were very well put together!

Learn the art of collage from world-famous children's author and artist Eric Carle. Comes with 72 sheets of beautifully printed tissue, each an original design painted by Eric Carle himself.
Customer Reviews:
buy this for the paper.......2004-04-07
this book assumes that you already know how to use scissors and glue. the rest is up to you! without giving heavy handed instruction, it lets kids (and adults) use their imagination to make what ever they like. the paper included is beautiful. in my mind, it's the whole reason for buying the book. you can make illustrations (collages) just like eric carle's. thanks to him for providing all his fans with this great pad of paper.
A Total Disappointment!.......2002-06-16
Don't bother with this book, you'll be disappointed. The only thing worth while about this are the few sheets of decorative tissue paper that come with it. I know nothing more about collage after reading this book then before I bought it. Do yourself a favor and DON'T waste your time or money on this. There are MUCH more informative books out there.
Not Just for Kids!.......2001-10-26
I was looking for a very elementary, how-to collage book for myself and this is a good one.
Because Carle wrote and stocked this book for children, it is very basic, but that was what I needed to get me over my fear of trying a collage of my own. His explanation of the format and process was very simple but very thorough. There are enough colors and designs of tissue papers to get anyone off to a good start in creating several different collages.
I think this would be a great gift for children and even for an adult who yearns to find the artist within!
Fun Project for Kids!.......2000-06-26
When I put this book on my wish list months ago, I had never seen the book before. Now that I have the book, I can say that this is an excellent gift for a gradeschool aged child, and the tissue paper that it comes with is beautiful. As someone who loves the art of Eric Carle, I thought it was fun to work with paper similar to the materials that he uses in his art. The instructions are so easy, and with a touch of supervision, this book could easily turn a rainy day into a fun and creative project. This book would be especially good for those children who have read Eric Carle's picture books.
makes a lovely rainy day activity book.......1999-10-25
Beside instructions and illustrations on how to do a collage, the book also contains 72 printed tissue papers to make finished pictures that look enough like Eric Carle's work to please any child. My five year old was delighted with her projects.
Book Description
Vastu is an ancient Indian science concerned with the arrangement and organization of living and working space. Its aim is to create harmony between people and their environment. Like their feng shui counterparts, Vastu practitioners believe that people should try to fit into the natural flow of universal energy, and that everyone's life can be enhanced by the knowledge and practice of certain key principles. However, that's where the similarity between these two sciences end. Vastu combines architecture, mathematics, geometry, astrology, and philosophy to form an intriguing scientific template that anyone can use to enhance their life. Vastu in 10 Simple Lessons shows readers how to use ancient Vastu principles to arrange their workplace for productivity and prosperity, "clear the air" with incense and herbs, create a Vastu-inspired courtyard in their gardens, and incorporate their unique individiual style within the family home. They'll also learn the best arrangement of living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms, as well as the best places in the home for staircases, doors, and even storerooms and garages. Entertaining and easy to understand, Vastu in 10 Simple Lessons is the first book with a jargon-free approach to an age-old science that aims to fill every reader's life with happiness, harmony, and peace.

A starter book.......2002-10-16
Indian philosophy believes in living in harmony with all elements of nature. There is also a belief that a natural flow of energy exists which should not be blocked and that all elements- living or non-living- should be aligned in a way to facilitate this flow of energy.
Vaastu shastra is an old Indian text that contains the principles of building construction and placements of objects within it, in accordance with the principles above. But in view of the religious nature of the Indian people, this text explains these principles more in terms of Gods rather than energy. It uses eight directions instead of just the cardinal four. This ancient text contains instructions on things like the shape of the plot, timing of construction, placement of various rooms around the house, home decoration and even the direction in which the inhabitants sleep.
"Vastu in 10 simple lessons" has been written as a starter book. Ancient Indian text allows some flexibility and suggests some alternatives, but only to a certain degree. The author, on the other hand, allows wide latitude- maybe rightly so. After all, the rules of vaastu are not binding but are suggestions. The more principles the readers incorporate, the better- vaastu shastra claims- will be their life. The author explains various principles in context of their traditional significance and relevance to modern day life. Some people confuse Vaastu shastra with feng shui. In spite of the goal being the same, the principles in these two tomes are entirely different and may be at conflict with one another. The practitioners can practice one or the other but not both. This books would be a decent starting point for anyone interested in the science of vaastu.
Does not live upto expectations.......2002-09-05
I bought this book with a lot of hope and expectation. I have read many other vaastu books and this was another one in the series. Unfortunately this book does not live up to expectations. For one thing, this book makes vaastu very flexible and allows user to do as he/she pleases. This book seems geared towards pleasing the audience and giving them an illusion that they are practicing vaastu whereas they actually are not. The lavish pages, print and pictures are meant to impress the user. Another inaccuracy, which I consider an insult to Hindu religion (Hinduism is where Vaastu came from), was that it shows a Nazi symbol and tells the reader that it is a Hindu symbol. This book is not recommended. Better spend that money on more authentic vaastu books.

A risque presentation of erotic art.......2003-10-07
Compiled by Douglas Ellis and an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal and academic American Popular History reference collections, Uncovered: The Hidden Art Of The Girlie Pulps is a risque presentation of the erotic art of the "girlie pulp magazines" the were published in the 1920's and 1930's. The predecessors to the "girly magazines" of today, some of these pulp magazine titles were so racy (according to the standards of the time) that they were seized in police raids. The informatively presented story of these magazines (printed and marketed simply because sex sells), is enhanced with an extensive gallery selection of full-color pin-up images and is what distinguishes Uncovered: The Hidden Art Of The Girlie Pulps as a unique book of erotica images that pushed the envelope of social mores of their era.
"Uncovered: The Hidden Art of the Girlie Pulp".......2003-10-02
UNCOVERED is the kind of book that revives that old line people used to use with PLAYBOY magazine: "I don't know about you, but I just buy it for the writing." In fact, UNCOVERED is a perfect balance of pulp-magazine scholarship and wild pin-up style cover illustrations, impeccably reproduced in full color.
I've been following Douglas Ellis' work for quite a long time now, and it's always been first class. With this one, he's achieved the perfect balance of art and story, sharing the history of the '30s girlie fiction magazines and their creators with a breeziness that belies what must've been an incredible amount of research, and sharing also some of the rarest and most appealing pulp covers I've ever seen.
You don't have to know anything about pulp magazines to enjoy UNCOVERED. Anyone who enjoys classic pinup art or weird American pop culture will find this opulent book to be a great addition to his or her home library as well. Highly recommended.
Spicy History.......2003-09-24
This is an outstanding anthology of cover art from the depression-era "girlie pulps" by such highly worthy (and undeservedly obscure) artists as H.J. Ward, Norm Saunders, and Enoch Bolles, among many others. To the best of my knowledge there's no other great source of their work in print (especially Bolles), but they're very well served here, and very little of the work seen here is reprinted elsewhere. The text is diligent, thorough, well-written, and interesting, covering the rise and fall of the magazine niche-industry that produced these amazing visual works; it is scholarly and will be of great interest and service to students of the subject, but the broader appeal- pun intended- is in the more than four hundred color images. These are beautifully reproduced at a generous size, and on slick, high quality pages. The overall design of the book is also excellent.
I'd like to see another volume, perhaps including some of the interior art, if it's worth seeing. I've also been waiting for years for someone to do "The Art Of Enoch Bolles"- how about it, Mr. Ellis?
The author's review below is very informative and interesting, with much more information about this worthy book.
History & Art of the Spicy Pulps.......2003-08-08
As the author of this book, I thought I'd post a brief description of it here. UNCOVERED contains over 400 pulp cover reproductions, all in full color. In addition, the history of these magazines -- their publishers, artists, writers and their struggle to survive -- is examined in 30,000 words of text, covering titles such as SPICY ADVENTURE STORIES, SAUCY MOVIE TALES, GAY PARISIENNE, VICE SQUAD DETECTIVE, LA PAREE STORIES, PARIS NIGHTS, SCARLET ADVENTURESS, SNAPPY DETECTIVE MYSTERIES and many others. Although there were many players in the field, during the 1930's it was dominated by the magazines of Harry Donenfeld, who would later go on to greater success with the company that eventually became DC Comics. Over 100 different titles (many very rare) are pictured, by 50 different artists -- among those artists heavily represented in the book are H.J. Ward, Earle Bergey, H.L. Parkhurst, Enoch Bolles, Peter Driben, Norman Saunders and George Quintana. Others whose work is reproduced include Gene Pressler, Zoe Mozert, Charles Wrenn, Worth Carnahan, Jack Greiner, Allen Anderson, R.A. Burley, Fred Craft, Archie Gunn, Cardwell Higgins, Seymour Marcus and Joseph Sokoli. Unlike the later pin-up magazine cover art of the 1940's and 1950's, most of this art has never been reprinted and has been hidden since its original publication. In choosing images for reproduction, I made an effort to try and avoid duplication of covers reproduced in other pulp histories. Each image was carefully scanned and cleaned, for the best reproduction possible.
I tried to do as much research as possible using period sources, such as the writer's magazines and newspapers of the time, and various books published by censorship groups. In the process, I've corrected some errors that had crept into previous pulp histories. Unlike most books of its kind, UNCOVERED is fully footnoted and indexed.
It examines in depth their war with censorship groups (particularly in New York City) which sought to shut them down, and which were often successful in causing these magazines to be banned from the newsstands and, in some instances, seized by the police as indecent and burned. These groups were ultimately successful, and though the girlie pulps burned bright for awhile, by 1940 their flame had all but been extinguished. Sold "under the counter" when first published, their art and story has remained hidden from then until now.
Though focused on the risque pulps of the day, I think that almost any fan of the pulps will find much of interest in reading UNCOVERED, as many of the publishers, writers and artists crossed over into "traditional" pulps as well. The tale of how some spicy pulp publishers continually changed company names in an effort to stiff their authors on overdue payments is, for example, also typical of some of the more mainstream pulp publishers. And contrary to popular belief, other spicy titles actually were at the top of the pulp food chain in payment rates. The spicy pulps were only one segment of the larger pulp industry that supplied reading material for a significant portion of the population during the 1920's and 1930's, but their heretofore untold story is intertwined with that of this larger industry.

He lived in literature and literature lived in him.......2004-10-20
He lived in Literature and Literature lived in him. Books were for him his truest friends and the secret intimates of his soul. When he spoke to another he spoke always to himself and to the books within him. But because he knew books so well and loved them so much all his speaking too became a book .And in the end even his final words there were books talking to books and talking to more books.
So for those of us who also love books , his particular love of books taught us so so much - but only in books.
A Good Read.......2000-10-03
This offers a series of interviews in chronlogical order (from 1966 until shortly before his death in '85) While he is good humored and self effacing he never lets you know more than he wants you to. There are also certain repetitons of ideas that occur, but anyone that has read Borges before will be used to that. To some extent it happans with most of the better writers in varying degrees anyways. Even with the repetitions it never comes across like he is doing memorized routines (which sometimes happans with William burroughs interviews)all in all important insight into the mind of an important writer.
Borges!.......2000-04-24
Borges is great in in his writings, and almost as good in conversation. Witty, urbane, stylish, Borges shows that conversation can be as exciting as literature. Buy now!

An added work to the canon.......2006-05-09
Burgin's conversations with Borges are like all of the works which Borges involved in an added addition to his canon. Borges breaks down distinctions between forms, and also loves collaborations. He too tends to see the work of individual creators as belonging not to the creator themselves but to the Tradition. Thus any work of collaboration such as these interviews are for him a further elaboration of his own Literature.
Burgin is knowledgeable and respectful, and his conversations bring new information and understanding of the master and his work.
