Mystic Detour in a Binge.......2007-08-27
I must say I am a great fan of the series and I hesitantly give this book 5 stars since it didn't resonate with me as much as the previous 2 books. However, you still get to witness the solid action of Jake Strait, who's hard drinking and amazing action is a mere sideshow to his own personal discoveries. It does skew to a more mystic side then the previous books, however the ideas of relgion it presents are simple a must read to those who are a fan of the human condition.
Of course you don't have to read the previous two books, but you would certainly be missing out on a segment of the plot, but more importantly on the moral history of the man himself, Jack Strait. Thank you.

slightly dissapointed.......2007-04-12
I dunno maybe im just falling into the idea of the sterotypical setite that most camarilla would like everyone to beleive but i was expecting something rather more from this one. I found the setite characters far far to nice but maybe that was the point? they are a clan widely hated across the board, why? cuz they hold beleifs that are alien to most other clans of vampires. Set was actually Caine? hereritics! and well i guess they dont understand them and what they dont understand they try to destroy. I think the whole point of this clan book was to portray them as a rather misrepresented clan that is less monsterous than say the Lasombra or Tzimisce and that they are just merchants and religous zealots. The actual plot i found slow and truging and well not really much happened till the end. In this book one of the main characters Zoe the Ravnos is a rather annoying fledgling and i feel like just hitting her and saying get a grip girl! but i guess thats what whelps are like when they are first embraced.All in all it wasnt a bad book but theres not much plot to it and its just(as the one before was) setting up the sceane for the really good stuff to follow.
From Adrianople to Lombardy in a Hearse.......2005-03-15
This series is beginning to unnerve me. Three out of the first four have a great deal of action and interplay and the last two have been almost compelling. I'm used to White Wolf's novels being slow and detailed, full of the minutia that is invaluable to a game player, but less of a draw to a casual reader. Cappadocian, and now Setite have been novels that could stand in their own right, and I couldn't be more pleased.
As the dust settles in Constantinople, many of the undead are leaving, heading for old homes or fresh starts. But travel, for vampires is difficult and dangerous. The world is divided up into kingdoms and principalities with rulers of all sorts, and a lone voyager is in danger on all sides. Enter Andreas the Settite, also known as Ankhesenaten who makes his living transporting the deathless to other demesnes, when he isn't pursuing other, even more dangerous agendas.
His immediate problem is that, instead of the five vampires he expected to guide into France, there are eleven. Vampires, even when they travel in boxes, require a large support staff. Those that are not in torpor require even more since the must hunt without drawing too much unwelcome attention. And Andreas has another worry - he must coax a box or vessel containing the withered heart of the heretic Khay'tall of the hands of the undead craftsman with whom it has been entrusted.
As this caravan rumbles across Europe on its three year voyage, one adventure opens up after another, like a nourish Canterbury Tales. Greedy kings, mad pilgrimages of the faithful, and even the peccadilloes of vampire love affairs keep up the story's interest and make all of the characters come to life. Even Andreas has his personal moments as he deals with the problems of having a Frankish Setite, the beautiful Meribah, in his entourage. Will he protect her, will he love her, or will he simply use Meribah and throw her away?
As you can tell, there's more here than in the usual clan novel, and this bodes well for future volumes. Especially if they are all as well written as Setite. Despite being part of a series, this book stands well on its own if you have even a vague idea of the underlying plot.

Strange surreal landscapes of a teddy bear society form the background of this graphic novel that deals with racism, murder and evil. The metaphor of bear-as-man and Kling Klang Klatch as Ku Klax Klan is a little too obvious and gets quite over-flogged. But otherwise, a fairly enjoyable graphic novel.

This book has a lot of good info regarding making your own baby food. The recipes are a little more difficult so I haven't used it for the recipes but like to use it as a reference.

Very Helpful Resource.......2006-06-18
There seem to be several mixed reviews on this book. Personally, I found it especially helpful when preparing meals for my son when he was between 6 and 15 months old, though I still continue to use it from time to time now that he's almost 2. The book has plenty of good information on food safety, prep and storage as well as lots of basic recipes. I didn't find following the recipies to a "T" helpful, but simply to get the general idea and then experiment on my own. Use common sense and your doctor's advice with regard to the ingredients introduced at what age (i.e., egg whites, honey, wheat) is my suggestion. My son loved having a wide variety of nutritious foods, and still does in part due to this book. Just keep in mind it's a resource, not a food bible!

A wonderful book for the first time parents, grandparents and anyone interested in all the various things that need to be thought about with regard to the feeding of a baby.

I am surprised with some of the lower reviews on this book. Some of the reviewers seem fanatical and others just plain incorrect. I feel pretty strongly about this which is why I decided to write my first Amazon review.
I am not yet a mother, but I do know a lot about health and nutrition. I am a Pilates & Yoga teacher and a former health columnist. I studied several books before purchasing this one for a shower gift years ago. The then mommy-to-be told me it was so helpful and that she used it all the time, especially when first starting to feed her baby boy. She still refers to it today as she cooks for her 3-year-old! I have since bought it for 3 or 4 baby showers. I've found that this book is appropriate for people with a deeper understanding of health & nutrition as well as nutritionally-challenged people who need a book that will inform them without scaring them off.
Back when I first bought this book, I was at the book store for about an hour comparing various babyfood books and Homemade Baby Foods was by far the best when it came to providing a lot of great information in an organized, reader-friendly, and non-intimidating way. "Search inside" the book and see for yourself.
Linardakis gives great "side tips" that pop out in colored print. In one tip, she explains how to thoroughly wash produce to remove pesticides using a natural bristly brush and warm water or a vegi-wash.
Go to a bookstore and compare the different books. I think you will see what I mean!

A couple problems .......2004-11-25
After making a strong case that Boxers need specialized training, there seems to be little in it particular to the Boxer. I wonder if this is just an edit off one of the other Barron's books.
Two, the author pushes treats as training rewards, which many believe isnt the best.
Three, on some topics, like handling aggression, the author just punts - 'consult an expert.' Not very helpful.
All in all, I prefer the Monks of New Skeet, and "The Art of Raising a Puppy."

I purchased this book after getting my first boxer. It is a very good book for the new boxer owner. I wish I would have had this book before getting my boxer- it would have been helpful when interviewing the breeder. It would also be very helpful for those who have not researched the boxer before. I did not give it 5 stars only because a lot of the information was basic dog information - education on training techniques and caring for a dog. But if you are new to owning a dog or haven't had a new puppy in a while, it would be very helpful. The information is all accurate and educational and is a good review for any dog owner.

This one is interesting to read now that we know more about Bonds. It holds up well and is very well written. I loved it!
NOT what I expected.......2005-05-23
I am one of the few Barry Bonds fans around, so when I decided to find a book on him, I was disappointed to find that there were surprisingly few. Noticing that "Barry Bonds: Baseball's Superman" was purported to be in-depth, not just another glossy biography and had good reviews on Amazon.com, I decided to make the purchase. Now, after reading it and piecing a few things together, I must say that I am thoroughly let-down. A few observations:
1) The cover and title are cheesy. I know that the book's author may not have had any say in this, but using "Baseball's Superman" as a title makes it sound like a cover story for Sports Illustrated for Kids.
2) The book is not written well. It is very choppy and author Steven Travers has a tendency to ramble off-topic for pages on end.
3) Not that I'm some avatar of morality, but what's the deal with all the sexual references? [...]
4) There are contradictions sprinkled throughout the book. For instance, on page 36, Travers quotes Bonds as saying: "My father and I were never really close when I was growing up." Then, just five pages later, he quotes Bonds as saying: "My father and I have always been very close." Sure, Bonds is the one contradicting himself, but Travers never points this out, just one example of the multiple occasions where I almost laughed out loud at the book's inconsistencies.
5) How many times are we to hear that Travers played pro ball? Big deal, you struck out 15 guys in a minor league game. There are minor-leaguers who have hit 60 homers, thrown perfect games, etc. and they are nobodies. I do not mean this as a slight, just a point that we do not need to hear incessantly about things such as "Stan Javier played with me" or how you sat in Randy Johnson's recliner, or how an interview subject calls you "Trav." The book is about Barry Bonds, not Steven Travers.

The bottom line is that Travers squandered a golden opportunity. Rolling the dice early in 2001 that Bonds would break the home run record, getting permission to do a book, and then seeing him acutally do it is akin to hitting the lottery for a sports journalist. Unfortunately, the finished product seems hastily thrown together, poorly edited, and foolishly out-of-bounds in many areas. Too often we hear about sexual hijinks that have nothing to do with Bonds, and we also get Travers's opinions on a multitude of subjects that I don't care to know his thoughts on. The fact that I'd never even heard of this book should have been enough of a red flag, but it wasn't, and therefore I got what I deserved. This book isn't terrible, but it also is not good, and therefore I would not recommend it. Fans of Barry Bonds should just wait until a comprehensive biography comes out on him when his playing days are over.
Steven Travers writes with a unique insight.......2004-10-28
With the multitude of books written regarding the sport of baseball, Steven Travers writes with a unique insight into not only the sport, but the day to day lives of Bonds and his peers. As a former professional baseball player, Travers touches on the subject matter with a unique insight and perspective. Additionally, Travers attended and graduated from USC during the time Bonds played at Arizona State (Pac-10). As such, Travers is not only a writer, but a fan. Travers not only documents Bond's achievement of becoming baseball's all-time single season homerun champion, but he touches on Bond's trials and tribulations with his peers and the media. Ultimately, the reader soon realizes that Travers was able to do what many has tried and failed at; that is, he was able to garner the respect and support of Bonds in the ability to tell his amazing story to the whole world. As a former Pac-10 pitcher at USC who battled Bonds on many occasions, I found Traver's insight very refreshing and commendable. I found the book a very easy read that kept me entertained throughout.

Steven Travers on Barry Bonds.......2004-08-05
I have lived overseas for many years but was an avid Giants fan in the 60's & 70's. Steven Travers' book on Barry Bonds was a welcome gift. I had read various news articles about the "controversial" Bonds and feel that Travers' book puts things right. I especially enjoyed the insights into the life styles of high powered sports figures. The build-up to Bonds' record setting home run season was handled in an excellent manner. This book is a great read for any baseball fan.

This insightful, well-written book is a must-read for the sports fan interested in a personal, inside view of the multi-faceted personality of the immensely talented Barry Bonds.
Bonds has provided few people with the access and insight he provided Steve Travers, the author. History will prove it to be the definitive work on one of baseball's greatest players.
