Book Description

The daughter of the celebrated Parisian actress Céline Varens, Adèle is a homesick, forlorn eight-year-old when she is first brought to Thornfield Hall by Edward Fairfax Rochester, her mother's former lover and -- though the grand estate's brooding lord refuses to acknowledge it -- quite possibly Adèle's father. Lonely and ill at ease in the cold, unfamiliar English countryside, the sad, precocious child longs to return to the glitter of Paris ... and to the arms of the mother who has been lost to her. But a small ray of sunshine brightens her eternal gloom when a stranger arrives to school and care for her: a mousy and serious yet intensely loving young governess named Jane Eyre.

As the years pass, Adèle watches with wonder as an unexpected romance blossoms between her governess and her guardian -- even as her curiosity leads her deeper into the shadowy manor, toward the dark and terrible secret that is locked away in a high garret. And on Jane and Rochester's planned wedding day, it is Adèle who is instrumental in bringing about the fiery catastrophe that shatters her "family" and sends her fleeing, frightened and alone, back to France.

But Paris is no longer the glamorous ideal she remembers. Intent on finding her mother, Adèle is soon lost in a world of sham sparkle and ruthless exploiters. Yet her will remains strong as she grows and learns, determined to follow her solitary odyssey to its inevitable conclusion, as she -- like Jane Eyre and the tormented Edward Rochester -- searches for salvation and love amid the ruins of misfortune.

A novel of wondrous imagination and vivid intensity, Emma Tennant's Adèle brilliantly captures the nuances and spirit of the cherished classic that inspired it, while being a bold and original literary work that stands firmly and gloriously on its own.

1 out of 5 stars OY!!!.......2007-07-26

I received this book from a friend of mine who knew that Jane Eyre was one of my favorite books...and it is only out of love for her that I finished it....

The idea of story of Jane Eyre being told through Adèle's perspective, at first, absolutely delighted me. But I had assumed that Emma Tennant would have at least STUCK TO Charlotte Bronte's story!

You start to read it and begin to note the creative liberties and changes that the author made; they start small only startling you a little, making you wonder where the author's twists intend to take you. Then it just becomes ridiculously laughable. LAUGH OUT LOUD laughable!

It is a very 'creative' story and an easy read (if your stomach can take it). I only recommend this people who read Jane Eyre a loooooong loooong time ago, and only vaguely recollect events and names....it will put the reader in the same frame of mind that the author was in.

4 out of 5 stars Totally enjoyable.......2007-05-15

If you ever wondered what little Adele is all about, this is a great read! Easy read and I read in almost one sitting.

1 out of 5 stars Why does author bother?.......2007-02-22

I picked this book up because I love Jane Eyre and had a renewed interest after seeing the excellent Masterpiece Theatre version last month. Emma Tennant has written a few sequels to Pride and Prejudice which were terrible, but I thought I'd give her yet another chance. This book was so bad, I didn't even finish it. Too many narrators, characters inconsistent with the source material, idiotic storylines, etc., etc.

Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I give it zero stars!.......2007-02-21

Yuck. This was terrible. First, there were too many narratives from too many people. Second, the original intent of all the characters was totally destroyed. Adele is portrayed as a schemer - even at one point believing she must kill Antoinette (Bertha, I suppose was not a glamourous enough name) because it might reunite her mother with Edward. Mr. Rochester has no redeaming qualities at all - he's an abusive alcoholic. And Jane! She is reduced to a simpleton who is oblivious to the world around her. Adele, who in the original book adored Jane as the only person who showed her kindness, says of Jane that she has a "banality of mind." Don't even get me started on Mrs. Fairfax!!!! Then there are the plot lines that are started, but never finished. Like the appearance of a brother somewhere at the end and endless streams of her mother's lovers and friends. I kept reading in the hopes it would improve, but it didn't. I guess I'm just glad that I got this book on the bargain shelf for 1/3 of the price listed. The bookstore obviously knew something I didn't!

1 out of 5 stars don't bother with this hack job.......2007-01-23

Ugh, I gave this "book" one star because you can't give no stars, but that does not for one minute mean I think this piece of schlock excuse for a book has any merit whatsoever. Why do people write companion novels to great classics if they are going to change the author's original premise? Or in this case, crap all over it.
Many people compare this novel to "Wide Sargasso Sea" and while I have never liked that either, because I feel that Jean Rhys also misrepresented Charlotte Bronte's original intention, at least that book has the distinction of good writing. This one isn't good, in any way. There is simply not enough room to enumerate the faults of this book, but the other reviews have done an admirable job of listing them: Rochester's brutality, the constant insulting of Jane by Adele, the normality of "Antoinette" (it's always rankled me that Rhys called her that, in the original she is Bertha, why pretty her up by calling her her middle name?) The murderous insanity of Mrs. Fairfax, as kind and benign a creature as was ever invented in fiction, the ludicrous murder mystery later in the book when Bertha's body is found in a shallow grave. And the last hilariously awful plot twist about Celine being pregnant by both the Viscount and Rochester. I mean, maybe, just maybe, a pregnancy by two men is possible if you happen to release two eggs and have sex with two men all at the same time, but really, would you be able to spot the differences in the fraternal twins so exactly as to know who to hit up for child support?????
The whole book is so ridiculous, I can't even believe someone published it. Avoid it, taking a nap would be more productive than reading this.

    Book Description

Minuela is a rich girl with parents who always act too busy to care about her, and everyone at school is too jealous to be her friend. She also has an additional problem—Minuela is afraid of a monster that might be living under her bed. Since she is only thirteen years old, nobody will believe her fear is any more than a phobia, but is this “imaginary” monster more than that? With courage, Minuela finds that the creature under her bed is not exactly what would be called a monster. The creature is a demon who needs her help. Throughout the journey Minuela finds she has more courage, intelligence and strength than she could think possible. These were not the most important things she gained though. Along with courage, intelligence and strength, she gains friendship, a gift she has wanted all of her life. Ten years later, when all is thought to be safe, more trouble occurs.

4 out of 5 stars Great Concept for a book!.......2006-08-20

If you have ever fantasized about world domination than this book is for you.

A history profesor arrives in a strange, primitive world that has no society, no written language, and no civilization.

The profesor's only weapon is centuries of knowledge that he has learned on Earth. But knowledge of the great thinkers, ruthless tyrants, and genius inventors is enough to make himself a god in this new world.

He establishes a civilization, introduces agriculture and religion, advances in weaponry, masonry, as well as Machiavellian politics, power-hunger, and vices.

The book has enough plot twists to keep it interesting. The book asks us if civilization is really superior to savagery and examines the profesor's failure to avoid the same problems that humans have encountered in our development of society and government.

Russell's concept gave him an opportunity to write a great book, but he did not fully capitalize. So much more could have been done with this idea. Still, it's a fun, quick read.

                      4 out of 5 stars good book!.......2007-07-12

This cookbook is great. Even though it's been hard adjusting to not being able to eat my favorite foods- it really helps to have a cookbook of everything I CAN eat versus being told everything I CAN'T eat. It's also great because it goes into further detail what IC is and other ailments that could be a result of IC.

                      5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!.......2007-05-07

This book was such a trememdous help to me. There's no other like it that I know of. It answered many of my dietary questions and honestly made me feel that we with IC really do have food options!!! I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with IC.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource and Cookbook.......2007-03-09

I love this book. Not only is it an excellent source of information about interstitial cystitis (IC) and the complex limitations of following an IC diet, it is also a great cookbook. (The Italian Baked Chicken is fabulous.) Recipes are straightforward and interesting. I refer to it again and again. The tone is sympathetic but hopeful, a great combination when dealing with this challenging condition. I applaud the writer for offering such a needed book.

3 out of 5 stars information more useful than recipes.......2006-10-31

This book disappointed me after all the good reviews. I have IC, but I am also lactose intolerant so I can't eat milk or cheese. Milk and Cheese are apparently staples in the IC diet, because the majority of recipes have some sort of milk product (without possible substitutions). The author also uses a lot of oil, which is inconvenient for someone trying to watch their weight. There are some good, tasty recipes like stews that are no brainers-they are IC friendly without milk that you can find in the "joy of cooking". There is however a lot of good information in addition to the recipes. There is an appendix that goes into details about IC safe brands of "staples" and which IC safe foods you can get your vitamins and nutrients from.

                      5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource.......2003-06-13

Bev Laumann's cookbook is far more than that: it is a carefully researched, thorough, easily comprehended guide for the IC patient. The level of detail is amazing, and is presented so that you can delve deeper if you are inclined, or skip ahead to the many summaries, useful lists and recipes. She is quick to differentiate between what has been demonstrated by scientific methods, what is common people with IC, and what is more anecdotal. The needs of people with related conditions are addressed, especially concerns about balancing low-oxalate and IC diets. Throughout, her tone is positive and encouraging without ever sounding condescending. The book much more than I had hoped for - I can't praise it enough. If you are dealing with IC and frustrated or confused about how to manage food, nutrients, supplements, or cooking, this book should be a terrific help.

Quirky yet practical, these cookbooks provide recipes that are nutritionally balanced and veterinarian-approved. They even include sections on "tandem" recipes - recipes for humans that, with slight modifications, can also be served to pets.

REAL FOOD FOR DOGS is written by Arden Moore, the first non-veterinarian to write the pet column for Prevention magazine.

                      4 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2007-10-01

Good alternative meals for dogs, with ingredients that you already probably have in the fridge. Also has great treat ideas that I didn't have in another treat cookbook.

                      4 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2007-09-26

This book has great dog treat ideas and a fun format. The recipes are unusual and very simple. I was disappointed that there weren't more recipes for everyday dog food, though. This book is more for special-occasion food.

3 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book. Not for the long haul.......2007-09-18

I picked this up on a whim just after I adopted my dog. I've been feeding my cats a homemade diet using Feline Future for years now. This is a very cute book. A very fun book. But it is NOT a very healthy book. It advocates a lot of highly processed ingredients. Refined white rice and refined white bread. Corn meal. These are not good for your dog.

It says nothing about whole, fresh, organic ingredients. Vitamins. Nutrients.

If you're looking to get started, this book is a good one for beginners. Although some of the recipes are far too ingredient heavy.

2 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT MY VET RECOMMENDS.......2007-07-13

I bought this book because I was scared to death to buy any more dog food from the stores after the poisoned stuff showed up from CHINA...which is a bad place to get ANY food from.
I showed it to my vet. He confirmed what I already felt after reading it...it is NOT a good book to feed your dog from on a regular basis. It is ok for an occasional cooked meal; but not for regular consumption. The recipes do not contain wholesome ingredients, and do contain salt and other things not good, and are too fattening. The treat section is good. I made some treats from the book and my dogs loved them. I made one of the meal recipes and only one of my dogs spit it on the floor...but she spits EVERYTHING on the floor if it isn't to her liking, and being a Shih-Tzu, NOTHING is to her liking, lol.
Anyway, it is an OK book for an occasional cooked meal treat or for making your own treats, but not healthy to give your dog on a regular basis....according to a Vet with degrees lining his walls.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT starter book for a beginning canine cook..........2007-07-09

I bought about four dog food cookbooks at once, after the big dog food scandal, and this was the simplest and the most clearly understood. It made cooking for the dog fun, which is important, since you will be doing this a LOT! I've learned about all the various things they can and cannot eat from the internet, and I've labored through the charts and graphs in other books, but when the food bowl is empty and I'm getting the *big stare*, this book is where I run to for inspiration. Check in the freezer section of your meat department for ground turkey. Also, throwing a pound or two of hamburger in the slow cooker with a bag of frozen vegetables and some brown rice is a definite time saver, plus much safer than some nasty ground who-know's-what from an unregulated factory. I've been getting complaints that the dog food smells better than the people food. Cooking for your pets will be one of those life-time long learning experiences, but this is a great place to start.

P.S. My dog is healthier now, and knows I love him, as well...

All of Francie's fashions and dolls are valued and identified! 450 color photos. 160 pages.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must-Have for Every Francie Fan!.......2003-01-25

This book is as close to being perfect as any can get in the Barbie world. Not only is it informative and well-written, it's fun too!

Each outfit is explained in detail, with each part listed, along with what parts may be more difficult to find, any variations in the outfit, etc. All of these items, where possible, are photographed flat and clearly so you can see each item separately and know what each thing is. Then, another photograph is taken on the doll, in a fun setting that usually goes with the name of the outfit somehow, so you can actually see how the outfit looks on a doll, something which I think is really important.

The photographs are great pretty much right across the board. The book is well-written, with a great sense of humour. All in all, you can't go wrong if you're into Francie and buy this book!

                        5 out of 5 stars FABulous!.......2001-08-24

Finally, a book with color pics of Francie dolls & fashions! I own Joe's "Vive La Francie" book and was disappointed the pics were not in color. This one is much better! Makes identifying and looking for items simpler. THANK YOU MR. BLITMAN FOR A WONDERFUL AND FUN TO READ GUIDE! :)

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad, could used some prototypes in it........1999-09-19

The book was great, just think that it would have been better if there had been some of the Prototype out-fits in it. I wanted the book to see the out-fits that Francie had. Now I want to see the prototypes, because some of the clothes where a nice style, but fabric was ugly. Maybe Joe Blitman will do another book with all of Francies things in it.

5 out of 5 stars A dream come true for Francie Fans.......1999-07-10

Blitman's book is drool-worthy. He has photographed Francie in every outfit she ever had, including the hard-to-find early seventies packs, and set the doll in cute scenes full of props and humor. I could pore over this book for hours enjoying the panache and verve Blitman conveys with his clever photos of Francie. But its not just eye candy -- each outfit is carefully modelled, on the doll and off the doll, and prices are listed. Invaluable. Thank you, Joe Blitman, thank you.

Handhewn bowls are one of the oldest crafts known to humanity, but one which has been almost lost. This new book will help reduce the trend and revive interest by introducing the carver and woodworker to exciting new possibilities. Using only hand tools, the bowl adze, a bowl shave and a carver's hook, Rip and Tammi lead the carver or sculptor through the steps of this satisfying art. They begin with a blank and conclude with an oil finish process that makes the bowls beautiful and perfectly safe for use with food. Each step is illustrated in color, with a complete description of design and technique concerns. Both the beginner and the experienced woodworker will enjoy the creation of these functional, beautiful pieces., 180+ color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"

Absolutely love this book. I've owned it for years and whenever I need to bring something sweet to some event, this is the book I go to. The Lemon Squares on pages 152/153 are the best I've ever had. Everything in this book is so good and fresh tasting. Nothing is over cooked, or bland or ordinary. I love Peach Crumb Pie and the Very Short Shortbread Cookies.

The frosting recipes in the book is also pretty great.

I've baked several recipes from this cookbook and they have all been divine! The cream cheese pound cake has made me "famous" with my family and friends. I bought 5 of the cookbooks to give as gifts this past Christmas.

Judy Rosenberg doesn't leave anything to guess work. Everything that I have made out of this book has been amazingly delicious. So many bakers give complicated instructions and yet still manage to leave something out. Judy is not like that. I have never met her but I feel like I know her after reading her book. She is with you in the kitchen. It is like she is sharing her recipe with somebody she really likes and she really wants it to be good.

Her Cheesecake Ala Rubens has become my signature recipe. I make it with her Pumpkin cheese cake gingersnap crust. People go crazy over this cheesecake. Even before anyone has tasted it the buzz will start with this cake because it is a show-off cake even unadorn. My children have been heartbroken many times at Church because they couldn't get in line fast to get a piece.

Not being from the south, she is almost apologetic offering her Pecan Pie, but it ended my search for a classic recipe. She might not be southern but her Pecan pie is. It is firm, smooth, tall, and proud, versus shallow, sticky, runny and sad. I live in Georgia and I grew up in Virginia and every time I take her pecan pie anywhere women ask me how I made that pie, and want the recipe.

                              I love this book.

I don't know if there is a better way to attest to how good the book is than to say: I have made things in this book for special occasions without testing it first. I know her recipes are that good! I don't make any desserts that the recipe didn't come out of this or the cookie book. I just wish she'd write a third! Everyone loves my baking, and I owe it to Rosie.

This is such a refreshing book to read and own. It is organized in the author's own homely style, like a mom tells her daughter - these are the basics you need to know to bake cakes, then cake recipes follow; then cookies, pies and so on. The pages are outlined with pink and white hearts, which takes guts to do! Judy Rosenberg is so herself, and so comfortably, warmly so, that it is a joy to learn from her.

Although I've baked various sorts of cookies I learnt a good deal just from her Basics of COokies section--all cookies don't taste their best fresh out of the oven - some are to be eaten warm, some cold, some the next day. For each kind (drop cookies, cake-like cookies, log cookies, shortbreads) she explains all the basics--oven temperature, baking time, checking for doneness, storing the dough, storing the cookies.

WHERE do you find this sort of thing? I haven't come across any other book that tells you so much, so well. I *know* that any recipe I try from here is going to turn out well, given I don't goof up in my own unique way ;-)

4 out of 5 stars The title says it all..........2004-05-04

Since I lived in Boston for a while I had the distinct pleasure of eating cakes that had actually been made at Rosie's Bakery. Sadly, after a while the quality dropped. For example, the icings started to taste more of shortening than of butter. Now, however, I can reclaim the original favorites in my own kitchen. As the title "All-Butter, Fresh Cream, Sugar-Packed" indicates, these recipes at least stick to using premium ingredients.

Each chapter starts off with some of the things Judy Rosenberg learned along the way, and her explanations for how to make these things work. Little things like lining cake pans with parchment paper, cooling cake layers in pans, etc. If you're a relatively new cook it'll be very useful. If you're an experienced cook it might be worth a glance through to see if there are any tricks you haven't picked up yet.

There are some truly decadent treats in here: this is not a cookbook you should use while dieting! You'll find Rosie's Famous Chocolate Sour-Cream Cake Layers, Queen Raspberry Cake, and one of our favorites, Cold Fudge Sundae Cake, which involves whipped cream and raspberries. In the fruit arena you'll find a Bittersweet Orange Cake with a Lemon Glaze, an Applesauce Raisin Cake, Mustard Gingerbread, etc. You'll even find a few cheesecakes, as well as a handful of frostings and fillings. I think a little more variety would have been nice, but the things that are here are quite good. I'm not entirely sure why there's a cookie chapter here since there's an entirely separate Rosie's Bakery "Cookie Book." It seems a bit redundant, particularly for those people interested in buying both. There are also bar cookies, pies and tarts, custards and puddings, and so on; the custards and puddings are my favorites.

I'm not overly fond of the layout of this book. The little hearts all over the place and the pink chapter intro pages are a bit much. Chapter titles like "Cutie Pies" come off as saccharine--titles are often puns. The layout isn't very user-friendly. The quality of the food rates a five, but the presentation issues are just enough to bring it down a bit. Call my rating a 4.5.

This is my all time favorite book. I liked that she was strong enough to put such a Title on a book when we live in such a so called Health conscience world. We all have to live a little and with this cookbook you can. I have never had one recipe fail that I've made from this. And if not for anything else buy it for her pie crust recipes and hints. It would make a great wedding gift for a bride as she explains all the necessary hints for baking, but in easy to read language. She doesn't scare you off by making you think you have to be a professional to do the recipes in her book.

From its plastic pillow packaging to its passages of almost unreadable peach-colored type on white paper, this tall, skinny book is no stranger to the high-concept bias of contemporary art in the '90s. Fresh Cream demonstrates the continuing bull market for extreme depictions of the body, retreads of once subversive strategies, and work heavily informed by advertising imagery.

The 100 artists in this second installment of a biennial publication (Cream was the first) were chosen by 10 curators from cities as far-flung as Moscow, London, Bangkok, and New York. Asked to select individuals "who have emerged internationally since about the mid-1990s or have yet to emerge at all," the curators chose such widely known video and installation artists as Doug Aitken, Vanessa Beecroft, Jason Rhoades, and Paul McCarthy, as well as those whose identifies would stump the most dedicated art-journal reader.

With so many video, performance, and installation works that beg to be seen in real time and space, this book is a poor substitute for an exhibition. Based on the evidence at hand--a dozen or fewer photographs representing each artist's output and brief descriptions by the curators--the cream only rarely rises to the top.

For this reader, the exceptions include Uta Barth's blurry photographic glimpses of what we see when we're focusing on something else; Doris Salcedo's eloquent furniture memorials to the sufferings of her fellow Colombians; Janet Cardiff's unsettling sound pieces; Annika Eriksson's quietly subversive community-participation events; Heri Dono's politically charged versions of traditional Japanese art forms; and witty paintings by Joanne Greenbaum, Laura Owens, and Elizabeth Peyton. --Cathy Curtis

The Cream series by Phaidon has become almost as important to the artworld as any major biennial, and the introduction of any new book usually is on the lips of the art glitterati for months afterwards. Obviously because the curators who pick out the artists in the Cream series are very good at picking out artists who usually go onto have important careers on the international scene. For anyone interested in the future of the artworld, the Cream series is your best bet. Nothing has so accurately predicted what we will be looking at. This Cream is no exception to the fineness of the series. Phaidon has continually pushed the envelope in the presentation of their works, this Cream comes in a lusciously weird plastic bubble which begs to be a work unto itself. I debated for days on whether to cut it open or just buy another one. In the end I settled for photographic documentation and subsequent vivisection. The book itself is absolutely stunning. True to it's namesake it comes in a creamy faux leather bound cover with the most subtle augmentations in its construction, itself resembles an alien product. The pictures are terrific and take up easily 95% of the book, biographies preseding the works of the artists, most of whom are exceptional. The curators didn't make the mistake of falling into rubbish and filling the book with to much colorful pop oriented tripe like most artbooks these days. Many curators make the mistake of thinking that if they make it look like Las Vegas the artworld will come, and for the most part that is very true, but that would just be inappropriate for the study Phaidon wants to make. If you're looking for something outrageous I recommend anything associated with Saatchi or Deitch. The curators made a great attempt at displaying really thought provoking work which fits nicely into a dialogue on the state and future of the international art scene. This is an absolutely beautiful and important book and great for any serious follower of the contemporary art scene.

Rarely does a book's presentation make you squeal before you actually open it, but WOW!!! Don't buy this one used if you can help it! It comes packaged in it's very own blow-up pillow, and unless you know something I don't know, you have to destroy the pretty packaging in order to look inside!

The book itself is several years out of date now, but still remains one of my top favorite resources for contemporary visual and performance art. Always filled with unique and exciting imagery from around the globe, the Phaidon Cream series is rich in content, as well as presentation!!

3 out of 5 stars Horrible book Design,.......2002-10-12

The best thing about the book, was that it came in the clear plastic floater thingy. For an artbook this is a horrible design, its hard to look at, the pictures are small becuase of the deminsions of the book, it works better as a sculputer or even a life raft then a book, which is ruined once you open it.

As for the art it contains, well I guess they call it "cream" because the cream always rises, backed up by the fact that it comes in a bag that will float to the top. Well, judging by the art/artist withing the book, they should have designed it as a target, because its hit and miss.

There is some really good and interesting stuff, but far too much endulgent junk,I'm surprised they didn't include that artist that does enema art. It is definately pro new media, instillations, video etc. and that stuff is hard to document adequately for presentation in a book, much less a book as badly designed as this. But maybe that is where this book succeds the most, the design is as kitchy(spelling) as the work it contains, excluding the actually good interesting stuff.

This is bad example of the artworld trying to find the "new thing" by displaying artist that are trying to find what I call "the thing", the enema artist, the aids artist, the womens issue artist, the gunpowder artist, the process orientated artist, the elephant dung artist, ya know the kind of artist that focus on the "thing" instead of making great art. Most are in search of their little hook. So the few good artist in the book get overshadowed by all the imature/cliche/insearch of the "thing"/asthetically unaware artist and the horrendous design of the book.

If you still buy it, don't open it, just put it on your shelf because it seems cool, which is probably what was intended in the first place and how the artist were selected for inclusion.

4 out of 5 stars fun book, good introduction.......2002-01-01

I bought this book at the MoMA in November 2000, because I had the first one, Cream, and I enjoyed that one. In physical dimensions, I think Fresh Cream was an improvement from the horizontally wide and floppy paperback binding of Cream. The packaging itself was an interesting addition, and rather appropriate in the context of what this book presented, but in the manner of not judging a book by its cover, the packaging takes a back seat to the contents.

This book, like the first, is a good introduction to one of the edges in modern art, and allowed me to learn more about artists whose work i had seen, and new ones. Concepts are what drive revolution and change in art, and while it isnt possible to include each and every concept behind each and every single work of art ever produced, Fresh Cream did well by providing brief insights into the leading concepts behind the most contemporary work which has been recognized in galleries and shows.

I rated this book at a 4, not a 5, since the book is not as readable as I'd like it to be, and could have done without some artists, as well as included some others. Strictly speaking of content, I liked the first one, Cream, better.

1 out of 5 stars No Thank You.......2001-02-17

This book is the acme of the deadend of Modernism. Phaidon is a great press, but why keep publishing books celebrating artists whose commodity is clever ideas? I'd rather see well-crafted images and intriguing subject matter (whether verism, abstraction, or in between) than one more High Concept catalog. It's a beautifully made book, thanks, but no thanks.

                                Product Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "folding paperboard boxes for fresh bakery products, butter, ice cream pails, and food pails" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

                                  Product Description

This study covers the world outlook for folding paperboard boxes for fresh bakery products, butter, ice cream pails, and food pails across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

                                          Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying buttermilk, kephir, and curdled, fermented, or acidified milk and cream? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of buttermilk, kephir, and curdled, fermented, or acidified milk and cream vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of buttermilk, kephir, and curdled, fermented, or acidified milk and cream? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported buttermilk, kephir, and curdled, fermented, or acidified milk and cream. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that countries are likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes.

                                              Book Description

All roads led to Provence after Mary Roblee and her French husband, Paul-Marc Henry, found a forsaken ruin on a hilltop near Avignon. In one afternoon they bought all twelve acres, launching into the pitfalls and pleasures of restoring their pile of stones and gnarled landscape into a farmhouse and a vineyard. Five years passed before they drank a goblet of their own wine, their orchards flowered, and their monastic white-walled rooms were filled with Provençal anitques. In discovering the fun and fascination of local customs, cuisine and history, Mary Henry learned, as an American woman, to glean the secret art of cross-cultural living and above all, to cope with the care and feeding of a Frenchman.
