First I must say that I am a Wilson-Wesley fan and I enjoyed her departure from the Detective series. It showed that she has range and is willing to tackle difficult topics. For example, we all may feel that sleeping with your daughter's ex-boyfriend isn't a good idea, but it makes for interesting discussion. I think that she does a relatively good job reflecting/discussing the difficulties of life, a mid-life crisis, parental relationships and just growing pains. Overall, I thought it was decent and definately worth discussing. For those who are die-heart Hayle fans, you will either love it or hate it. Come on though, give it a chance.

This book was a nice read. The book was about a couple who has problems and the man ups and leave for no reason. After going threw some ups and downs the wife starts to date a ex boyfriend of her daughter. The husband starts having feelings for his best freinds wife. This book was a good read and has alot of drama and it is a 100% must buy!

The most unwarranted crossover ever.......2004-12-01

Back in the early `90s, Jim Lee and Marc Silvestri decided they were doing a good thing by cooking up a WildCATs/Cyberforce crossover, running through Cyberforce #1-3 and WildCATs #5-7, and collected in trade format as KILLER INSTINCT. Not that the crossover needed to occur, mind you, but with early Image, sales gimmicks and hype took precedence over any hint of quality. The main problem is that even with best-selling miniseries and regular issues under their belts, these two super-groups lacked the character development, history, and individuality necessary for an effective crossover. And no matter how strongly the creators felt otherwise, they absolutely could not write a decent story for their own characters.
As a result, KILLER INSTINCT is an endless loop of fight scenes, melodrama, and horrid characterization, with little for the reader to take interest in. It centers around Misery, a villain with ties to the pasts of both the WildCATs and Cyberforce. The two groups meet, but instead of a team-up, it becomes an extended fight. Is this fight due to a valid reason? No, it's due to... MIND CONTROL (high up on the comic book cliche list). In addition, so-called heroes freak out and risk life and limb in response to an insult. Female characters recovering from injuries prance about in skimpy see-thru nightgowns. And, almost everyone has a bad attitude. One unintentionally funny aspect of the story is the liberal use of meaningless technical jargon and acronyms, the conception of which seems to have required more effort than the plot. If you are trying to fill in the backstory of WildCATs, be warned: there just ain't much here. You'll get a bit of info on the island of Gamorra, which plays a part in early issues of THE AUTHORITY, but that's about it.

A history of chocolate in Seattle predated the opening of Fran's some 20 years ago. But Fran Bigelow single-handedly altered the entire landscape. Wow, wow, and wow!!!! I don't even know where to start with this incredible encyclopedia of chocolate!!! But as I am rarely without words regarding chocolate, let me begin!!
Fran bigelow knows her stuff........there are no two ways about it. She did not become a powerhouse by accident. She has worked hard for all the success that has come her way, and she has passed her love for this venue of gastronomic pleasure on to you, if you choose to take it.
Without getting too chemistry-like in her teaching, she tells you all about chocolate and how it wants to be handled. You can try to do it on yor own, but face it, chocolate can be very tempermental, and if you don't know the subtle complexities of its makeup, you will loose time and money. She will guide you if you just take the time to learn from one of the Masters.

Just for the sake of an example of what anyone can do, I tried the cake on page 107 called "La Reverie". Holy cow!! You would of thought that I had studied at the Cordon Bleu; it was fabulous and soooo not hard to make. Plus you will make so many new friends that you never knew you had.
She's the best and that's because she is a great teacher and the recipes don't require a degree in chemistry, architecure, or design. Go ahead and try it..........
A must have cookbook for chocolate lovers.......2006-02-15
Fran's passion for chocolate definitely shows throughout the book. I have made three of the recipes (so far) and all have been big successes. The chocolate cake torte was divine as were the truffles and base for hot chocolate (or just spoon eating out of the bowl in my case). The book is very precise and the recipes appear to be well tested for the home cook. I even tempered chocolate for the first time with success following her directions clearly detailed in the book. The only fault I can find is that not every recipe has a picture which would be inspiring and helpful, though many of the recipes do have pictures. It is a beautiful book and should be on every chocolate lover's cookbook rack or living room table. I find myself returning to her book for fail safe recipes even over the Chocolate Bible and The Art of Chocolate.
Easy to make fabulous desserts.......2005-12-31
The recipes in this book are very clearly written and easy to follow, with stunningly delicious results. She has helpful hints, such as the one prefacing her recipe for chocolate madeleines: "the molds must be filled exactly so that all the little cookies are ready to come out of the oven at the exact same time." Try the Princess Pudding recipe and you'll never want to buy instant pudding again. I also love the fact that she goes over how to handle chocolate, how to buy the right kind for dessert making, even how to remove chocolate stains from clothing. I don't usually make dessert unless it's from some prepackaged box, so finding a chocolate dessert cookbook that took some of the mystery out of making tarts, puddings, cookies, even ice cream, has been a really fun learning experience.

Having read all of Alice Medrich's books (chocolate goddess), I came to this book with lower expectations but this book delivers way beyond what I could hope for. Not only are the photos much nicer, the directions and commentary are totally nuetral, taking on a practical and sincere approach for the reader. The recipes are really good too. Highly recommend!

Yum! The first recipe I used from this book was the Chocolate Hazelnut Cheesecake... one bite and I was sold on Fran, her chocolates and any future book(s) she chooses to bless us with. The cheesecake was beyond divine, and Fran's helpful notes and glorious pictures make the recipies fun to follow. The recipies are within reach of the casual cook, yet will fulfill the dreams of the most ardent chocoholic. If you love chocolate you'll adore this book! (All I ask from Fran is that she keeps producing chocolate and books... thank you Fran!!!)

Fun Dog Fun Book!.......2006-08-27
Audrey Pavia"s book portrays the Labrador as an all around fun loving family dog. If you don't own one after reading this book you will probably want to acquire one. She is very thorough in her chapters on health and training. Her chapter five (Understanding Your Lab) is an excellent and easy to understand study of canine behavior. Her chapters on whether to breed or not to breed your Labrador are very thoughtful. It is a well written,handy manual for a Labrador owner... or would be owner.
Okay book, but not a lot of new information.......2005-07-22
I have got this book along with another yellow lab training book. This is the one I finished first. I am not that amazed of the quality of the content. Of course, you should love your puppy and treat him/her with properly. If not, why would you get one? It has a bunch of "do's" and "don'ts" which may or may help you. I have got some ideas, but me and my puppy also attended a local "puppy kindergarden" which I found fun and beneficial for both of us. My puppy is over 14 wks now, and he sure is growing and handful.
If you are going to get this book, check out the content. How would you do it? You may have to buy it. But it is okay. It is a decent book overall.
Have fun raising yours. We are having fun!
Nice Book On Labrador Retreivers!.......2005-01-21
This is an inexpensive but quite accessible book about training Labs, a no nonsense nuts and bolts primer for the new caretaker of a the best dog breed yet devised by the Heavens; the Labrador Retriever. As someone who shares his house and life with four of God's single most nearly perfect craeature, I can testify as to the accuracy and relevance of all the information in this wonderful compendium. It is a literal treasure trive of data about how to raise and care for your new best friend, and it covers everything from potty training to kennel care.
As a personal note, it is improtant to remember how sensitive Labs are, that one never ever strikes one, and that gently scolding them will get you the reaction you want much more efficiently than would any unjustified corporal punishment. Just remember, friends, there are really no bad dogs; only ignorant and incompetent people trying in vain to train the dogs. What you need to avoid such pitfalls is all here! Enjoy!

A few months ago I found a puppy lab, and I had NO CLUE as to what to do or how to train him, and I knew I wanted to keep him, so I got this book, and I really went "by the book" with him. It has been very useful. Reading about labs has allowed me to be a lot better parent to him. It has a very good section about training tricks (sit, down, shake), it explains very well what to expect from a lab (they are crazy dogs). It tells you how to deal with his nasty chewing habits, and several other things that you need to know in order to be a good pet owner.

I liked most of this book. I have a male chocolate lab and wanted to know more about the breed. It covered every area from showing, to the breed standard to lab behaviors. The only subject I was dissapointed about was the lack of information on breeding a male labrador. I wanted to know more about the basic steps to take when breeding my male lab with a female. For example, when can I breed him? How do I get the word out that I have a male labrador to breed? If you're an owner of a female labrador, this book covered those areas. However, there were only a few lines on breeding a male.

I purchased this book after viewing many. I found that this book had all the essential elements of Labrador care, characteristics and training with a very nice picture illustration. I bought this book for other Labrador (1st and multiple time) owners who also enjoy it. Some things the pictures present may otherwise be difficult to explain. I thought this book would be more of a "how to", but it is definitely not. It does have some recipes in the back, but on the whole it's a "lookin at" book, and it wasn't what I expected. It is gorgeous, but not very useful.

The Polaroid camera combined two of Andy Warhol's obsessions--the disposable nature of modern consumerism and the photograph as ready-made. An inveterate and relentless user of Polaroid cameras, he made tens of thousands of instant photographs during the 1970s. Many of these were made over a short time span and focused on one individual or subject, sometimes a formal sitting for a portrait, an informal event with friends, or a party at The Factory. Between 1970 and 1976, Warhol established a rigorous system of cataloguing. He would take home the Polaroids, edit and sequence them, and then enter them in individual red Holson Polaroid albums. These albums, with Warhol's original sequence and themes, have remained intact. Red Books is a red wooden box containing 11 of Warhol's Holson Polaroid albums. Each book contains a facsimile reproduction of Warhol's sequence. The themes include a study of Paloma Picasso, a day trip to Montauk, Mick Jagger, the "Asshole" painting, and John and Yoko. In addition to the 11 red books, a black book is included which contains a text by Fran ois-Marie Banier explaining the significance of these albums within Warhol's oeuvre and how they act as a visual diary of his work, offering unrivaled insight into his creative process.

These are copies of the Polaroids Andy took, neatly bound in red covers and bound with plastic spiral bindings --- 11 mini books in all with the twelfth (black) volume containing the pertinent names and dates of the photographs, plus an introduction by the internationally-renowned photographer Francois-Marie Banier. It is Banier who captures the allure of these instant photos best: "In his Polaroids, in those seemingly lacquered little pictures, I saw at once the cry of frantic and reckless youth, lost in a pseudo-civilized world. Each of these Polaroids goes one step further, telling us, from the land of Mickey Mouse: you are all Andy Warhol characters." From 1969 to 1975, celebrities (from Christopher Isherwood to Mick Jagger, Caroline Kennedy to Rudolph Nureyev, Rex Reed to Sylvia Miles), drag queens and assorted Warholian characters are captured crisply, realistically, and above all, affectionately. Owning the Red Books is (almost) like owning one of the more bizarre time capsules of the twentieth century.

Factory Work examines Andy Warhol's (1928-1987) role as a mentor for two younger artists from opposite corners of the art world. Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) were young, independent artists with their own substantial reputations when Andy Warhol invited each of them to paint in his "Factory" on 860 Broadway, New York City. In 1976 Andy Warhol and Jamie Wyeth painted each other's portraits. They jointly attended openings from 1976 to 1980; the exhibitions were known informally as "The Patriarch of Pop Paints the Prince of Realism," and Warhol visited Wyeth's farm in Pennsylvania. Basquiat rented a studio on Great Jones Street from Warhol beginning in August 1983 and collaborated with Warhol (first as part of a trio including Francesco Clemente) later the same year and in 1984 began joint projects with Warhol alone and exhibited in 1985. Warhol influenced these younger artists, and they enabled him to stay connected to new audiences of an evolving art world. At the same time, Warhol's paintings demonstrably changed due to his contact with Wyeth and Basquiat.
The works illustrated provide clues toward further investigation of these two unique partnerships, also documented in Warhol's published diary entries, Interview magazines, and Warhol's tape-recorded conversations. There are four catalogue essays: Robert Rosenblum, Professor of Fine Arts at New York University and internationally known curator of 20th-century art at the Guggenheim Museum, examines Warhol as mentor for Jamie Wyeth, "a card-carrying member of a Yankee dynasty of three generations of ultra-WASP artists," as well as for Basquiat, the "dark-skinned crazy kid from Brooklyn who began his meteoric career by raucously embracing a counter-cultural life"; Christine Daulton, consultant conservator for the Warhol Museum, describes and provides recreations of the unusual techniques used by Warhol to create his oxidation portraits in the 1970s and 1980s; Joyce Hill Stoner, conservator, art historian, and Director of the University of Delaware Preservation Studies Program, writes about Wyeth's influence on Warhol that can be seen in Warhol's 1976 cat and dog paintings, his 1979 pig photographs and print, and his 1976-1977 skull paintings and self-portraits with skull; Margaret Rose Vendryes of the City University of New York discusses Basquiat's work and his "tagging" of Warhol's commercial images on their collaborative paintings and collages. The text and illustrations also offer insights into the celebrity-obsessed culture of the '70s and the drug- and money-mad art market of the '80s.

... location. If you'd been there, you probably could have taken a collection of photographs of at least equal caliber. What matters in these photos is who is in them, with little apparent attention to the construction of the shots.
So if you'd like to see mediocre photographs but of extraordinary 2nd Factory regulars at that Factory as well as Max's Kansas City and Central Park, this may be your book. It may beat looking at nothing, they may bring you back to a special time.
The value for me lies in a 13 page interview with Billy Name. If you are trying to understand the mysteries of Warhol and his Factories, Billy Name would be a great source of information. Think silver.
You can also (September 2005) see Billy Name photos, mostly black and white, at his web site. He also has some interviews there he was the subject of.
"Artistic" rather than informative.......2003-10-03
Billy Name was there and has one-zillion photographs from which to choose, so I was truly disappointed by the "artistic" crud he chose to print. I wanted to see real photographs of real people, not how clever he was at "conveying the feeling" of the time. I resent this book because it could've been so much better. I didn't buy it to see Name's artistic view of a momentary, yet monumental, era. I bought it hoping I could study people's faces, stances, outfits, the background. I wanted to study the pictures and respond to them all by myself without the photographer hammering me with images amounting to dogma. I mean, the Empire State Building? Yeah, that's really deep and cuts to the heart of things. Name needs to share, not hoard. But lucky for us all, he was there with a camera and actually took pictures. And of all the Warhol set, Name's autobiography would be one of the most interesting.

The interview w/Billy is great, the pix capture the air of the crowd and the essence of their era...but i wasn't satisfied; it captured the Factory kids but not the factory itself. And the info therein was relatively limited.
i feel this book is meant for appreciation and sheer sight-enjoyment, something to be left as an exclamation rather than an explanation.

Freshly arrived in New York from his native UK, David McCabe was contacted in early 1964 by Andy Warhol after the artist had seen a layout by the young photographer in the pages of "Mademoiselle". McCabe was assigned the gigantic and very Warholesque project of documenting the artist's life for a whole year. Warhol would, spontaneously and on a regular basis for that whole year, call and invite McCabe to his studio, or to whatever event he was about to attend. Some 2500 photographs later, McCabe had succeeded in capturing Andy in the most various events and settings that characterized his life at the time: Andy chatting with Barnett Newman at some Fifth Avenue art openings, Andy at the crowded and psychedelic parties at the Factory, Andy drinking his morning coffee at the diner around the corner, Andy working on the first "Flower" paintings in his studio with assistant Gerard Malanga, Andy and Edie Sedgwick preparing to shoot a movie scene, Andy alone, Andy with! William Burroughs, Richard Avedon, Dennis Hopper, Philip Johnson, and much more. 1964-65 was a crucial year in Warhol's career, and also possibly the time when his public image started playing a major role in the construction of his legend. McCabe's images were in the end never used by Warhol, and they constitute an astonishing documentation of his life. Warhol is known for always playing a role in front of cameras, to a point where it was difficult to say whether he was posing or not. However ambiguous the limit between the public and private Andy is, McCabe's images somehow go beyond this ambiguity, and McCabe's camera was like an accessory that Warhol became used to carrying with and around him. These images are not only a valuable documentation of one of the most important artist of the postwar period, they are also an insight into the world and people that surrounded Warhol, into the New York art world when Pop Art was at its peak. McCabe selected 450 of the most significant 2500 pictures, organized here in chronological order. David Dalton, who took part in many of the events organized at the Factory at that time and became an insider to Warhol's world, wrote the captions and short stories that accompany McCabe's pictures. These writings reveal unique facts, stories, and anecdotes about Warhol and the community of cellebrities that surrounded him.

From 1972 until his death in 1987, Andy Warhol worked prodigiously on a variety of projects. Sublime examples of his work from this period are gathered in this elegantly designed collection which includes essays on the artist and interviews with him.
This collection of paintings, photographs, prints, video stills, and interviews from the last fifteen years of Warhol's career are presented in a four-volume slip-cased set. Along with his best known later works, which include his Oxidations, Camouflage, and Rorschachs, this set contains stills from Warhol's forays into filmmaking, including L'Amour, Women in Revolt and Heat. Contact sheets from his work in photography offer an intimate glimpse of the glittering world of 1980's New York. The artist's books and renowned conversations, including his final interview with Paul Taylor, round out this superb exploration of Warhol's last years.

Beautiful survey of Warhol's post-60s work.......2004-07-10
This set--catalogue for an exhibition currently traveling through Europe--is a nice survey of Warhol's underrated later work, including material not covered in any of the big retrospective volumes. The first part covers (mostly) paintings and (a few) wallpaper designs, starting with the ubiquitous "Mao" series and ending with the "Last Supper" series. In between, we get some of Warhol's most beautiful and enigmatic work (including the "Hammer and Sickles", a range of self portraits, the fairly well-known "Shadow", "Oxidation" and "Camouflage" paintings, as well as lesser-known things like the truly wonderful "Yarn" paintings). This is an exhibition catalogue, and as such only includes a few paintings from each series--we'll have to wait for the final volumes of the Warhol Catalogue Raisonne for the full experience. The paintings are reproduced nicely, with folding plates for the larger work and sometimes closeup details. The second partcovers photography, books, video and movies, along with some samples from Warhol's "Interview" magazine. The photography section is especially fun, as it includes contact sheets from Warhol's continual documentation of the world around him, sometimes juxtaposed with appropriate excerpts from his diaries. The final part consists on interviews with Warhol and essays about him, the former fun, the latter a mixed bag.
The format of the set is sharp: three paperbound volumes (not four as the amazon.com description says) with contrasting spines (paper, cloth and glue) housed in a sturdy slipcase with a luscious closeup reproduction of one of Warhol's "Oxidation" paintings. The individual paperbacks seem rather flimsy, my only concern about this handsome set.

As a student of the arts I frequently find myself browsing the aisles of book stores searching the various impressionistic art books available. This study into the works of Andy Warhol give a grounded understanding of some of the more recognised pieces. Each of Warhol's works is accompanied by a caption explaining the piece and giving the viewer a better understanding of Warhol's intent. This book offers the reader a wonderful and enchanting learning experience.
