Book Description
An inspiring tale about a very special friendship and the redemptive powers of a shared passion for the art of working with metal and wood.
Customer Reviews:
A Touching Memoir.......2002-04-12
This short memoir is a true love story. The author loves both shopwork and his friend Archie. It is hard to tell which this book is more about. You need not be a shop - either metalworking or woodworking - enthusiast to enjoy the book. Archie was a truly interesting guy and the author portrays him well. The memoir is appropriately brief. Mr. Probert does not waste time nor is there any hint of self-aggrandizement (always refreshing in a memoir). An enjoyable quick read.
A rewarding glimpse into the mind of an engaging character........1998-10-29
Some of us are lucky enough to find a true mentor in our lives, someone who opens our eyes to a special world, and in so doing, gives us a glimpse of ourselves. Such a person is Archie Raasch, the subject of Richard Probert's book Archie's Way. A man of few words and many talents, Archie is an unforgettable character whose down-to-earth wisdom is vanishing from our hurried world.
Archie's Way sparkles with the joy of discovery implicit in new relationships. Probert's mastery of visual, sound and textural detail gives the book sensory complexity without being overbearing. A few of the mechanical descriptions, though were a little too technical for one unfamiliar with the landscape of the workshop. But this was only a minor flaw and did not distract from my overall enjoyment of the book.
There is a line of tension throughout the book that is skillfully drawn so as to tantalize the reader to discover the true nature of Archie and to tap the wellspring of his enigmatic quirkiness. The later chapters move from the technica of the machine shop to the mysteries of the wood shop and the labyrinthian paths of Archie's woods. There amidst the fragrance and beauty of the natural world, the layers of Archie's character are respectfully revealed, the book takes on a warmth, much like the patina of well-worked wood.
Probert is an engaging storyteller with a wonderful sense of character. Archie's Way is a rewarding glimpse into a sadly disappearing way of life.
A delightful story of friendship and human dignity.......1998-10-13
Wonderfully crafted story depicting life in a small midwestern town. Reminded me of my own father's workshop. He and Dick Probert would have been great friends. Causes one to ponder what really is important and how values are formed. As an instructor in a technical college, I would like to have this book on the reading list for every student and faculty member.
A great book!.......1998-08-10
I was fortunate to read a bound galley of ARCHIE'S WAY. It reminds me more of TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE than JOE AND ME, but no matter what you compare it to, this is a book to share with friends. Funny, sad, sweet, and imbued with the scent of sawdust and cutting oil throughout, it's the kind of book that anyone who has ever done any kind of woodworking or metalworking should read. Through work (which may be art without your knowing it), the best kind of lasting friendships are built.

Second of three epic trilogies set in the legendary world of Conan the Barbarian
Cursed with an unspeakable power, Anok Wati, the heretic of Set, has unknowingly unleashed a hideous evil. And unless he can find the hero within himself, and destroy a god given flesh, all of Hyboria will be enslaved.
Customer Reviews:
Age of Conan: Anok, Heretic of Stygia, Venom of Luxor.......2006-03-07
The final book of the trilogy was barely good. The character development that occured in the second
book kind of stalled and one of the characters became very cardboard and uninteresting.
Another character that could have been very interesting was not developed to full potential and kind of left a disappointing hole in the story for me.
The plot twists that I have been reading the novels to resolve came to a conclusion to quickly and without much fanfare. What he did write was average. I just thought it could have been so much better.
It just seemed so generic. The first two books were better and seemed less rushed to me. This one felt like it was written on a deadline, especially toward the end. The trilogy as a whole suffers as a result.
If this last book had been as good as the first two I would have given the trilogy a confident recommendation but now I can only recommend it if you are really into heroic fantasy and can make more of the characters in your mind than the author makes of them in the final book.
Venom of Luxur: A Disappointment.......2005-12-19
The book over-relies on recaps of prior events. Basically the structure is thus: Anok does something. Anok's friends worry about what Anok has done (recapping in the process). Anok's enemies ruminate about what Anok has done (giving yet another recap). Anok worries about what he has done in the past (any guesses what this provides? Yes, another recap), then Anok does something else, and the cycle goes on - recap after recap.
The structure of the trilogy, being so filled with constant recaps and reminders of what was read in the last chapter, gave the entire series the feeling of being "padded" in order to achieve a certain length.
This structure was evident in the prior books as well, but it seemed this one added another twist to the structure: In the midst of the recaps, the side characters all pondered their relative uselessness - as if the author suddenly realized his characters had no point and that he needed to get on the ball and give them something to do! Teferi actually is given magical powers from out of nowhere in order to make sure he could contribute in some way.
Magic does underly and solve everything in this series. Magic weapons, magic spells, magic items, magic gods and so on, good and evil. There are anti-magic serums and locations, "simple" spells (why are deflection spells always referred to as a "simple" spell in fantasy novels?), magic swords and magic dream-sticks. Even Fallon asks for a magic weapon at one point, realising she is useless to Anok (other than for sex) if she doesn't have magic.
The storylines are concluded by contrivance instead of by natural consequence of the characters' actions. Every plot line was tied up very neatly and without much effort on Anok's part. Instead of plots resoved by natural consequence of a charater's actions, the plots are resolved by the author in strings of nifty coincidences and revelations.
The novel would have been MUCH better if Anok had truly fallen into corruption. Sure he killed some cannibals and was guilty of arrogance, but he still was pretty nice to his friends.
His descriptions of the setting, however, are excellent. He excels at description. It is easy to visualize what he writes, and that holds true for the third book as well as the other two. I do like the character of Ramsa, even though in this book he did a lot of stupid things - ultimately he was not brought low by Anok's greatness - he was brought down because he made a lot of blunders that allowed Anok to win.
AWFUL final farce.........2005-12-15
'Venom of Luxur' - Anok, Heretic of Stygia trilogy - book 3
Anok book 1 was quite good and promising - rating=7 /10.
book 2 was going downhill and very disappointing - rating=5.
But This 3rd book is not much like the other 2 books.
this is NOW undisguised farce fully revealed in all it's ridiculous silliness!
If you like to dis-engage your brain and let HIGH FANTASY herd you along like a helpless sheep then you may enjoy this book?
Overall, this book is the worst kind of pointless, very silly and corny high fantasy where fate and gods pull all the strings till it strangles your brain and you have to 'laugh out loud' [LOL] to remain sane. [ but i like high fantasy when it is well done.]
It's like watching a cartoon-comic for teen fans of 'Buffy' and 'Hercules' on prime-time tv..with no integrity, VERY silly and LOL corny.
there are so many 'CHEESY-CORNY-ABSURD-SILLY' [CCAS] things in this i have a long list in my notes. the fate-dominated plot is full of CCAS very convenient, instant solutions, events and help 'served on a plate' for all the dummy-hero-puppets.
May the 'real' SET take all the editors and publishers responsible for 'stealing' my money and further insulting REHoward's original creations with this wimpy puerile nonsense?!
[ hyborian publishers still seem to be more corrupted by insanity than the most powerful stygian sorcerers?!] ;)
this is my frank and honest reaction to a VERY disappointing, frustrating, and very silly book. [ a shockingly pathetic final book which ruined a slightly promising new series]
Rating = 2 /10. 1 of the worst fantasy books ever and a stupid waste of time and paper..
..and with a very cheesy-corny 'happy ending' worthy of a disney film!

Flipping Neologisms With a Burgessian Ease.......2006-05-17
Mr. Gangelhoff's magnum opus has caused a stirring success and with good reason. The Odyssean style narrative is in perpetual motion, engaging the reader at every turn to revel in the quirky, kinetic dance which is The Alianthrope. I liken the reading experience of The Alianthrope to the epic speediness of Philip K. Dick because, as with any of Dick's work, the visual construction of the words on the page encourage oculomotor coordinations to go into overdrive. I believe the locomotion of The Alianthrope and the reader's exercise delineated above primarily motivate saccadic people, which is to say those who can effectively & with precision, give meaning to that strange French word, SACCADE, which describes the most elementary faculty that goes into reading. So when Mr. Gangelhoff says something in his own review of the book to the effect of, 'if you want to graduate from the ninth grade it may be a book worth looking into', he has a point, although one hopes the freshman has encountered things of this nature previously, as in perhaps the fourth or fifth grade.
In The Alianthrope we find characters cloaked in exquisite humor and mercurial impulses; everything is in a protean spin. Amongst a whirling salmagundi of humorous action and arcane references, we find that what at first appeared formidable and discouraging, in terms of language, has become fun and rather lighthearted. Mr. Gangelhoff is clearly not afraid to experiment with syntactical arrangements. Thus, for example, on page 299 Mr. Gangelhoff playfully employs a structurally unorthodox dialogue which bandies a mocking allusion to "postmodern verse" and carries with it a sense Derridian obloquy. Or perhaps obscenity.
Mr. Gangelhoff flips neologisms like a cook making a breakfast of champions might flip flapjacks. The reader is taken logo-dancing through the kitchens of Mr. Gangelhoff's new lexicon, a language spoken by a true logophile. In the book we find words like 'vaped'. We find examples everywhere of the author bending the parameters of the English language. On page 442 we can see such experimentation: "Yes, I've become the compleat anglophile," said Fandango. "A peon of Albion, I paean the pennons of Arthur! " Here the author is having homophonic fun with the language. The book is filled throughout with such linguistic fun. I intend to resume this review anon, and hope that it can be read as a benefit to those who have not yet had the ecstatic experience of The Alianthrope, but more importantly, that it be read by those who have and who know whereof I speak. This review is as yet in unfinished form.
Book Description
There is a quiet culinary revolution going on at Commander's Palace a one-hundred-year-old restaurant in the center of New Orleans' Garden District. Here diners gather to enjoy a fabulous "new" New Orleans cuisine. dubbed "Haute Creole." New Orleans is the birthplace of many fine classic dishes -- such as shrimp remoulade, seafood gumbo, oysters Rocketeller, trout amandine, and pompano en papillotte. At Commander's Palace this classic cuisine has been changed to fit today's more health-conscious lifestyles. Only the freshest local ingredients are used, heavy sauces have been replaced by light sauce reductions that intensify spicy Creole flavors. and nouvelle French and Chinese cooking techniques and Japanese modes of presentation have been adapted. The results have been glowingly praised. As Bon Appetit magazine said in its cover story on Commander's Palace, "The Brennans are simply attempting to add an element of originality to a style of American cookery which has already made its mark in the annals of gastronomy but which is now ready for innovative reappraisal."
The leaders of the Haute Creole revolution in New Orleans, and the owners of Commander's Palace, are Ella and Dick Brennan. Brother and sister, they are part of the famous Brennan elan that started Brennan's restaurant in the French Quarter of New Orleans forty years ago. The name Brennan is synonymous with the finest in New Orleans food. In 1974 Ella and Dick took over Commander's Palace, renovated it, and turned it into one of the most innovative, imaginative dining spots in New Orleans. This book brings together for the first time the fabulous recipes and secrets of this exciting restaurant.
There are more than 175 recipes in all, including drinks, appetizers and soups, salads, seafood, chicken and game, beef and veal, and desserts and coffees.
Regional American cuisine has never been more popular. This book should be a welcome addition to the cookbook library of anyone interested in fine Southern cuisine.

DELICIOUS FROM FIRST PAGE TO LAST!.......2007-07-14
COMMANDER'S IS A WELL-KNOWN RESTAURANT IN NEW ORLEANS THAT IS A PART OF THE HISTORY AND FABRIC OF THIS CITY...I LOVE THE RECIPES IN THIS COOKBOOK, AND I FEEL LIKE I'M DINING THERE USING IT. YOU CAN MAKE THE DELICIOUS DRINKS & APPETIZERS WHICH ARE GREAT FOR TWO OR A PARTY...OR YOU CAN MAKE A WONDERFUL COMMANDER'S DINNER TO DESSERT! IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TO THE RESTAURANT YOU MUST GO....BUT THE COOKBOOK HELPS GET YOU THERE IF YOU CAN'T COME TO NOLA. I'M SO GLAD COMMANDER'S HAS REOPENED, BUT IT'S GREAT TO HAVE THEIR COOKBOOK SO I CAN ENJOY THE FOOD ANYTIME.
Just like a trip to New Orleans.......2000-03-28
As a proud owner of literally hundreds of cookbooks, it's always a wonderful surprise to discover a terrific book that I've never seen or heard of before. The Commander's Palace New Orleans Cookbook is just such a book. This book was recently used as the basis of two recipes in a gourmet cooking class I attend once a week, and the results were outstanding, to say the least. We started the meal with Commander's Garlic Bread which was served with Creamy Tomato Bisque with Lump Crabmeat and a Chiffonade of Fresh Basil. The main course, grilled salmon and barbequed mouth watering smoked spare ribs, were simply out of this world ... with a sauce inspired by this book's suggestions. But when we got to the dessert! We made Bananas Foster, a favorite dessert in New Orleans, and one of the most rich and wicked desserts you'll find anywhere - flambéed with banana liqueur and rum, and served over vanilla ice cream. This recipe alone will transport you to another world... a world that will have your taste buds swirling for days and leave you hankering for a trip to New Orleans to visit the Palace yourself.

Whether you own a problem dog or just want to better understand the complex, intelligent mind of your canine companion, this is a book you won't want to miss.

Excellent for those with problem dogs.......2007-07-06
This was recommended by a friend and it has helped me turn around a very challenging dog. It's easy to read, entertaining, and invaluable for understanding and working with challenging dogs.
New possibilities for old problems.......2007-02-02
Showing a sense of humor, Dr Dodman describes his experiences with a variety of problem behaviors in a pleasant, fun read. At first I was extremely skeptical of using drugs to solve behavior problems, but I decided to give Dodman a chance. In each case he analyzes catalysts and contributing factors to the behavior being discussed as well as the biological background. I felt he used a very well-rounded approach, suggesting liefstyle changes (diet, exercise, management), behavior modification, training, and sometimes drugs. Not every case involved drugs, and those that did often were for short term use only. What I found most insightful, however, was Dodman's analysis of various aggressive behaviors, their basis, and how they're acted out. He very clearly differentiates between dominance aggression and fear aggression, providing precise and various examples of each. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a problem dog. Even if you don't go the drug route you'll still learn a lot about your dog and his/her problem(s). The only reason I'm giving it 4 out of 5 stars is because it's a rather dated book (1996) and doesn't cover some newer therapies.
insightful. canine behavioral problems by section........2006-11-25
this book is easy to read, at times humourous, and provides some good knowledge to dog owners who are into the behavior science part of dogs. i will outline how the book is styled.
the book breaks down behavioural problems into 3 main category:
1. aggression
2. fear
3. obsession
5 chapters under the aggressive probems deals with dominance (dog-owner aggression), rage syndrome, territorial aggression, dog on dog aggression, dog aggression to babies.
for fear related problems, each chapter would deal with separation anxiety, fear of thunder, geriatric aeparation anxiety, phobias and fear of strangers.
the obsessive section deals with tail chasing (esp in bull terriers), shadow chasing, persistent licking and incontinence.
each chapter is written very much like watching an animal planet documentary. dr dobson would tell you a little bit about the kind of problem, then use real life examples to tell you how he treats the behaviours shown in these dogs.
it is easy to read, sometimes humourous, and quite matter of factly written. at the end of each chapter, he would conclude the chapter with a "treatment for" summary. the summary notes down in point form treatment/s for each chapter's problems.
i think this book covers all the usual behavioural problems in dogs that we face. some of the chapters was written is a fashion that is much like the tv series "house" (a persoanl favourite), so it's quite exciting and entertaining.
the only downside to the treatments suggested is that i find dr dobman's like for using drugs for treatments. noting that he may be doing these for badly affected dogs seems like a good idea, especially when all courses of treatment has been done. this seems to be the case for the book as he dwells in only the worst cases. this might lead to the reader thinking that one MUST use drugs for treatments. well, if it comes tothe end, if drugs have to be used and it has little side effects, why not? they are increasing being used in treatine human psychological problems anywways.
generally, a very good read and anyone interersted in canine behaviours should have the full repertoire of the more common canine behavioural problems being dealt with here.
Dog who loved to much.......2006-06-26
Excellent!! Gave me insight to how a dod responds to behaviors.
A Big Bow Wow.......2006-03-15
I found this book both informative and a pleasure to read. I wasn't doing research for a thesis so I found the his style of writing very pleasurable. It seemed as though the cases presented were a last resort and education and understanding were the order of the day. There is so much we do not know about canines. If some meds can help the dog defeat a problem behavior I see it as a win-win situation. I doubt that the dog is happy in his current state either. I'm presently involved in opening a "no kill" shelter in my area. I wish Dr. Dodman could open a satellite office near us. I know we are going to be dealing with tons of cases just like those noted in the book.

A Snowman's Family Album Quilt.......2001-03-01
This is an excellent choice for small Christmas projects and gifts which could include tote bags, pillows or small decorations. The patterns are a suitable size for quilting or foundation piecing, and are ready to be used as is ! I am not sure that I would invest the labor and time in a full sized quilt, but plan to use the suggestions for smaller projects. The book also includes ideas for other holidays, but its main focus is "Christmas".

Now we know what theyýre really thinking.......2004-03-03
Doctors, rap stars, poets, lawyers, pilots, the formerly incarcerated, bus drivers, gay men: what do they have in common? They are all Black men telling their stories. Some of the men are well known, others aren't. Each story tells, in their own words, the joys, the tragedies, the fears, the hopes and dreams of the Black men who wrote the chapters. It gives us an insight into the thoughts of Black men and how they relate to the world they find themselves occupying. These men tell us what they think about their mothers, their lovers, and their wives. They also give us insider information about how they deal with money, education and careers.
The editors, Daniels and Sandy include an introduction to each section so that we will know what we are about to discover. At the end of each section, suggestions and questions are presented to help the reader move forward toward a specific goal. It is a book that is long past due and while it is long, it is definitely worth the effort of reading it.

Book of the Year.......2003-11-04
Souls of My Brothers, Black Men Break Their Silence, Tell Their Truths, and Heal Our Spirits, edited by, Dawn Marie Daniels and Candace Sandy, is a collection of true short stories by African American men from all walks of life. They are movie stars, musicians, CEOs, single fathers, bus drivers and teachers. Each story covers subject matter such as: Growing up without a father in the home, mental illness, love, health, finances and sexual orientation (to name a few).
Every now and then you read a book which blows your mind. Souls of My Brothers happened to be that book for me. From the foreword, by Isaac Hayes, to the last essay, I was captivated. At times I cried, I laughed, and by the end, I was empowered to become a better person. One of the most powerful sections in the book was the section which deals with being the keeper of one's brother. In this section, individuals shared stories on how they became successful when faced with insurmountable odds and how they reached back and developed programs, centers, jobs, etc. to assist their brothers.
Armed only with a keyboard or a pen, each essayist shot powerful words on paper. Their words were loaded with the insight of a race of men that has been silent far too long. If you have ever wondered why an African American man reacts a certain way when placed in certain circumstances, I suggest you read this book. Although this book does not serve as a blueprint into the African American man's psyche, it can be used as a tool towards understanding him.
If you are looking for that perfect Christmas or birthday gift, I suggest you give a copy of Souls of My Brothers, to the brothers in your life.

If you really and I do mean really want to find out what is inside some of the brother's head, then PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!! Not only do I find it informing, but a great read. One brother talked about dating women of all colors and persuasions, and had me grudgingly agreeing to his argument. Some of the men had me feeling for the various experiences they went through, and none left me disappointed. Please read this book.
Anything With Soul Catches My Attention!.......2003-09-29
I enjoyed the narratives of men of today in their own words. Women have often tried to understand these souls, and for some reason can never get it right. So we might as well let these men express themselves. However, I do know that there are always some hidden truths. I look forward to the version for women, and if folks can't get enough of this intimate look at personalities of today's man and woman, I strongly suggest reading PerSOULnalities: Poems For Every Kind of Woman and PerSOULnalities: Poems For Every Kind of Man which both tell both men and women the truths that can't be hidden from a personafied characters. I am going to spread the word about this book, and it has hit the airwaves all over New York. Much luck to these outstanding compilers.
