Dana Quigly Thornbladt sits hunched over a strange laptop computer, the room in darkness save for the light dancing across the screen sending eerie shadows over her face. Password? Why no password into his computer but a password into B\Acct? A smile crept across her lips. This was better than Party Bridge.

Beads of sweat began dripping into her eyes. Damn! Again and again her fingers flew over the keyboard. All of a sudden, Bingo! The screen jumped: Account balance: $21,792,500.00! Ouch! She almost screamed. Her lip! She ran her tongue over her lip tasting the blood. First National Bank of Grand Cayman! Grand Cayman! The Club was a mob front.

A long-harbored dream of revenge takes shape. A Bamboozle! One of the coups she executed at the bridge table. For it to succeed, to tap into the money, she'd need a patsy, a guy with a boat.

And so begins a tale of double-dealing, Dana charting each step on coups she pulled off at the bridge table…and all but ends when the tables are turned, when she realizes she could have lost something she always dreamed of finding, and it is then she pulls one more trick from her sleeve.

Bamboozle!.......2006-06-11

I have just finished reading "Bamboozle." There are many things
which I can say about it, all good !! The author constructed a very interesting,
believable plot, which keeps your attention until the very end; and truly,
"Bamboozle" is a very appropriate title for it. Just when the reader thinks
they have figured out the direction in which it is going to go; it takes a turm;
and heads in an totally unexpected direction.

I thought if very interesting the way the game of Bridge was woven into the
fabric of the story; and made it a very integral part of the same; and of
course he knows Cape Cod and uses
its idiosyncrasies to move the story line.

The Big Bamboozle is a fresh menagerie of a book that serves up a serious environmental message with a hundred bawdy laughs and a close look at one of the earth's most fascinating creatures.

It mixes a moth-eaten, audience-worn, baggy-pants comic together with an intellectual Great Ape and throws in a Night Club Stripper -- officially known as an ecclysiast.

What stands out in this new work by Hal Sisson is the way this writer crawls inside the heads of his disparate cast of characters. Dwart is a waning stand-up comic running out of steam and self-esteem. Affronting problems he talks his way out of trouble by using old jokes the way a lawyer accesses old court rulings.

Sisson tackles the thoughts and feelings of the Great Apes themselves. He maintains pace, readability and tension throughout the book, while steadily satisfying our voyeuristic desire to learn more about the Great Creature.

Its plot plunges ahead, when Bamboozle's life is in danger from a hot-headed human. This low-life has a hilarious hair-brained reason to want to kill the beast.

All told, a refreshing, original work.

A great book for all to enjoy!!!.......2004-08-17

This guide was perfect for my collection as it really brings the Two Towers film to life through the 48 pages which contain 88 photos featuring Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Eomer, Eowyn, Theoden, Faramir, Treebeard, bad guys, and many more. There is so much to enjoy in this book including the 57 direct quotes from the movie script. Follow the broken fellowship continuing the journey by the wonderful photos that carry you away to Fangorn Forest, the Dead Marshes, Edoras, Helm's Deep, Osgiliath, and Isengard. David Brawn's guides are well done and, as his others, this one will not let you down!

Good for pre-movie viewing, but pretty worthless after.......2003-03-17

It's a good book, don't get me wrong. There's some magnificent pictures from the second installment in New Line's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's the whole movie plot simplified.

But this book is only worth something before the movie. Afterward, it just loses its luster. Since you've already seen the movie, why look at the pictures again?

Nonetheless, there are some interesting items that take place in the book that give some hints as to what some extended material for The Two Towers' extended release will be. (For instance, the plot line about Aragorn releasing Theodred's horse Brego, which rescues him in the movie after the Warg battle. In the movie, the horse just showed up, without prior mention of it)

There's also (at least in ours) a page of stickers in the back of the book, but since there's only one to a character, no one wants to remove them from the page.

A terrific book to have, a must-have!.......2003-03-06

In the second installment of the Lord of the Rings, "The Two Towers" has the fellowship of the ring broken up. Frodo and Sam are on their own as they continue on their way towards Mordor to destroy the One Ring. Merry and Pippin are captured by the Uruk-Hai and it's up to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli to rescue them. Both new allies and new foes will be made as the battle for Middle Earth continues. What will happen to the fellowship, will Middle Earth ever be rid of the evil of Sauron?

"The Lord of the Ring: The Two Towers Photo Guide" is the illustrated story from the epic New Line Cinema film. In other words, this is more like a picture book. Includes over 100 color photos which are of very high quality! LOTR movie buffs might have seen many of the pictures either on the Internet or somewhere else, but there are some photos which are new. Lots of the pictures have captions from the movie. It's easy to look through the book since at the top of each page there is like a title for each major scene in the movie (ex. "Plains of Rohan" or "Helm's Deep".

Some of the best pictures from the book include: Gandalf riding Shadowfax, Legolas riding a horse during the battle against Orcs and Wargs, Frodo keeping the Ring away from Faramir, Merry and Pippin in the capable 'hands' of Treebeard, and King Theoden riding into Helm's Deep. Plus plenty more!

Definitely not a replacement to seeing the actual movie or reading the original books by J.R.R. Tolkien, but I can still recommend this book for LOTR Movie fans and kids. My suggestion though is to watch the movie before reading this since in my opinion it's better to not know what will happen. Another reason to by this book is that there are some missing scenes from the movie. For example, in this photo guide it explains how the horse Brego was able to rescue Aragorn. And Faramir's plan will be pleased to see at the end he helps Frodo and Sam more than in the movie. And some more info on Gollum's past! Hopefully an extended edition of "The Two Towers" will come out including these missing scenes!

Also included at the back of the Photo Guide are stickers of the characters of "The Two Towers". Stickers include Gandalf, Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Saruman, Faramir, Merry and Pippin, King Theoden, Eowyn, and Arwen, which is altogether twelve stickers. Some people might be disappointed to find that there is no sticker for Eomer, who will come to be a pretty major character in the Lord of the Rings.

Good book for younger viewers.......2003-03-02

Whether or not smaller kids will get to go to "The Two Towers" depends on their parents, given that this movie is frightening and violent and quite creepy in places. And even if they do go, some kis may be a little confused by the complex storyline. And, of course, adults who need to see the pictures.

It's basically a picture book, the events of the Two Towers and what happens to Sam and Frodo, who were last seen heading into Mordor; Merry and Pippin, who are kidnapped by orcs and receive some unexpected help; and Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli, who are pursuing Merry and Pippin, but are waylaid by an old friend whom they thought was lost. Be forewarned, this book is crawling over with spoilers about what happens in the movie.

The pictures in this guide are outstanding; most of them aren't featured in the other "Two Towers" guides coming out at this time. And many are captioned with various lines from the movie (such as a photo with Frodo and Sam, which is captioned with "What is it, Mr. Frodo?" "Nothing. Just a dream.") There are good photographs of old favorites such as Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, and Pippin. There are also good shots of Gandalf in his new incarnation, the majestic ent Treebeard (a fantastic shot of a priceless character), the noble Theoden, the grotesque Gollum, and many others. The only problem I can think of is that a few of the shots never appeared in the movie, such as one pic of Frodo holding his cupped hand in front of his shirt, and Faramir watching him. And as with the "Fellowship" photo guide, some of the pictures are rather small.

Despite these minor problems, this is a good book for the "Lord of the Rings" movie fans, especially the younger ones who might need a few pointers, or the older ones who love photographs. This one has very little in common with the other "Two Towers" movie-related books, and it's worth a look.

Very slim.......2002-12-13

This book shouldn't be overrated. It's nice to see the storyline of the second film presented in it, and it has a couple of nice pics. But that's it. The commentary is absulutely worthless and adds nothing unless you're a complete Tolkien novice. Very much a children's book, I bought it for the film storyline (which once again deviates significantly from the books at certain parts) and some stunning pics, of which there are but a few. And the storyline of the film will be known to all soon anyway so it's only merit post-TTT release will be a few nice pics.

Gary Russell's Art of the Fellowship of the Ring would be a much more worthwhile purchase. I wonder if he'll do another one for TTT and RoTK...

Pure pleasure to re-read.......2007-07-09

On the whole I've always felt that the first 4 books were the weakest of the series. I came to the series in media res, after the "cast of characters" had been united & had formed their special sort of "family." As with those Sherlock Holmes stories which Holmes himself tells, I missed Watson.

However, as I have read the revised edition of "Colony in Peril" along with the original Ace paperback, I realize that the earlier books function more like a television pilot. They were a bringing together of the "cast of characters." Ms. Griffin handled the development well... gradually rather than "dumping" everything on the reader at once & then having to tell a prolonged backstory.

As I mentioned in my review of the revised "Star Commandos" the differences between the Ace edition & the hardback are minor. We now have references to "nanos" rather than "tapes & books," which is a simple updating of technology as our own world has progressed.

I believe that it is in this book that there is a change made concerning the hierarchy of the military, which is a set-up for the 10-12th books. In the original mass market paperback reference is to "commando brass," no real ranks are given for the upper eschelon un-named brass. The new editions lay the ground for a Chief Admiral, w/o naming him. This Chief Admiral is later a major character.

Unfortunately, there was one area of "Colony in Peril" that benefitted from the Ace editor's work. There is an attempted description of the star system that hosts the major naval base & the bureaucratic civil center. In the mass market paperback, they are reduced to the planet Horus of Isis (Isis is the sun star) & its twin planet, Set. In the revised edition, we may be seeing Ms. Griffin's earlier work rather than a later addition. Here, the relationships of the planets are very confusing. The sun star for Set is not Isis, but Nut (Nut is a more logical choice, since she was the Egyptian sky goddess). However, I read through this section several times & compared it to the paperback. The revision does not enhance the story, but is a confusing interruption.

Still, for those of us who love these books, I find the differences interesting. Plus, it is a reminder that even our favorite authors can benefit from a good editor.

One addendum... the cover art. I am not particularly enamored by the dust jacket artwork of the hardbacks. Mostly, they are just inoccuous... on occasion just plain bad. With the artwork for "Colony in Peril" we see a background of water buffalo, which do not fit the description of goldbeasts at all, but worse, we have a creature who does not at all fit the description of a gurry, which is supposed to be a brown, feathered mammal, about the size of a common English house sparrow.

Here, the "gurry" in the foreground is a very light tan & is the size of a mourning dove, while the flock, flying in the background, is white.

I realize that cover art is often deceptive. It was the cover art of books 4 & 5 that first brought me to the series. However, I do wish that a little more care had been taken with the dust jackets in this series.

Griffin doesn't disappoint!.......2005-05-12

Book 2 of the Star commandos series introduces my favorite character -- Bandit -- who steals the show and brings the main gang closer together as they embark on new perils. With this installment, the series is well on its way! Looking forward to Book 3!

A must have for every spec fic fan's bookshelf.......2005-04-28

I wish I had found the Star Commandos series earlier. This was the first book in the series that I've read. I never thought I would love science fiction this much! With strong, lovable characters, exciting action/adventure, and excellent world-building, Colony in Peril has made me a fan of both P.M. Griffin, and the Star Commandos series. I'm hooked!

If you like to spend a lot of time cooking, this book IS NOT for you.......2007-03-24

I ordered several low carb cookbooks when I decided to start preparing more food at home, and this is the only one I use. I don't have a lot of time to spend preparing or even shopping for my food, and the 3-ingredient recipes really keep things simple. No more going to the store to buy all those exotic ingredients you will never use again.

There is also a handy shopping list of ingredients to have in your cupboard each week - I didn't even have garlic in mine - that make shopping without a meal plan do-able.

The other thing I like about this cookbook, is that everything I make tastes great. And for me, that's saying something. My sister was astonished that I am cooking at all, and when I prepared the fantastic asparagus with fried capers at her house - from memory, with ingredients she had on hand - she immediately bought her own copy.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to control the carbs in their diet by cooking tasty food at home, but who doesn't have the time, skill or inclination to learn more complex cooking methods.

after exhausting every recipe in the south beach diet cookbooks, i needed some new ideas. this book is great. so many great ideas that often times, you already have the ingredients in your fridge. the recipes are all coded, Very Low Carb, Indulgent Low Carb or Low Carb. This helps to balance out a weekly meal plan and keep you on target. i'm so glad i bought this book.

I have been a low carber for years and have lots of low carb cookbooks and I have to say that this book was disapointing. The recipes are things I've already seen or won't make. Some of the carb counts were pretty high too. If you have other low Carb cookbooks you probobly don't need this one.

Creative Ideas.......2005-11-25

I love the tastes and textures used in the recipes. The only drawback is how complicated (as in time consuming) some of the recipes are. With three ingredients each, I expected recipes I could quickly whip up. Some are, but some aren't.

I have always been skeptical of Rozanne Gold's 1-2-3 approach, thinking three ingredients couldn't possibly yield the kind of results I expect. Boy, was I wrong. The recipes in this book are terrific and jam-packed full of flavor. Among those I have tried are: the Pecan-Crusted Chicken Breasts (intensely flavored and incredibly good - hot or cold), the Miso-Glazed Chicken Breasts (yummy), the Salmon Steaks with Cornichon Vinaigrette (lovely), the Green Beans with Pesto and Walnuts (great), "Creamed" Spinach (my husband repeatedly asks for it), the Sauteed Grape Tomeatoes with Shallots (delish), and Smokey Joe Burgers (nice twist for burgers). I use this book at least once a week.

Hilarious and informative at the same time........2007-05-24

This book is the funniest book i have read in a long time. While it is very informative, I would highly recommend it as a gift for anyone, dog owners and people without a dog.

It had my friend and I in stitches and tears the whole half hour trip home from the city. Anyone on the train would have sworn we were on something other than just sugar and happiness.

Would not recommend as a book for young dog owners as some of the pictures are rather inappropriate.

Buy it, you won't regret a cent of what you pay.

As helpful as it is amusing........2007-05-12

I have several books on dog training and care, but this one was by far the funnest to read and most interesting. The illustrations and terminology are hilarious (an "unauthorized download" = poo on the carpet) and the information is very helpful, like the detailed instructions on how to introduce new dog to your current pet.

This book covers basics that many books forget to mention (puppies lose teeth just like humans) and is written in a way that even dog "experts" will appreciate. A must-read for the savvy and beginner alike. If you are trying to find a gift for the 14-35 year old dog lover, look no further.

A delightful book presented in a humorous fashion. The manual is full of valuable information, diagrams and covers all aspects of introducing dogs to each other, to cats, to children, to crate training and more. I would recommend this book to all dog lovers. A delightful read!

Excellent gift for new dog owners.......2005-07-20

Though informative, the real value is in the illustrations and amusing text which has been written in the style of a computer manual. In the section on dog anatomy, nipples are described as preinstalled docking ports for peripherals, noting that "the circuitry of the male model renders these valves inoperative." The book is liberally peppered with gems like these. Another reviewer mentioned that the illustrations are very Ikea and that was spot on--Ikea ought to consider selling this in their pet section. I would not personally use this book to replace a more text-base dog book with photos, but it's ideal as a gift, worth the laughs, and has some interesting facts and essential information.

I think this book has nice fun-to-do projects. The style is Country/Shaker, but even people who typically do not like those styles will like these projects.

This book was a good and interesting read. I would recommend it. Ralph Bunch was a very interesting character. I am sad to say that I did not even know who he was a year ago. It further displays my mis-education. He is never mentioned in Black America. It seems if we forgot he ever existed.

It is funny that during Black history month they bring out the same old tired people. Ralph was incredibly significant to the development of the United Nations. I recommend this book.
