Fulfilling a pact they made a decade earlier, she leaves her husband and child in Seattle to care for him as he dies. Customer Reviews:
awesome read - easy to digest.......2006-10-03
Fabulous book, hard to believe this is the author's first work! Each page reads like a conversation with a good friend; it has that easy cadence and believability. I'm eager to read more from this author.
Spellbound.......2006-07-28
I could not put this book down. Delia tells her story in the present and in flashbacks. In the current time, Delia is holding the hand of her best friend while he dies. Kleenex alert!! Delia and Timothy walk this path together in an agony of loss and triumph. We meet Delia some 13 years before as a physically and emotionally bankrupt 17 year old. She comes to rehab as an 89 pound, half dead druggie/alcoholic. Faced with the choice to live or die, Delia makes the courageous leap to grab life. In the rehab Delia meets a delightfully quirky and human cast of characters who will become her friends and guides as she learns how to live a sober life. This book is gritty and sweaty and unflinchingly honest about what it is like to be in recovery. It's a story about how Delia learns to live and to embrace all the scars and challenges that polish and grow her into being a beautiful and unique piece of art, like Beachglass.
Beach Glass is an awesome book!.......2006-06-14
I have long been fascinated by issues related to addiction and alcoholism and have read several books (fiction and non-fiction) on this subect; Beach Glass is definitely one of the best I've read. The indepth portrayal of people in the throes of and recovering from various addictions is amazing. It is great the way the author can realistically create characters from all different backgrounds (gay, straight, male, female). And I loved the way she wove the details of the locations (sounds, sights, etc) into the story. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone, regardless of whether you are in the addictions counseling field or not.
Beachglass.......2006-05-22
Blackburn's book shows the tremendously rich life that's possible for the characters explicitly because they are in recovery. Life's trials were realistically approached and the characters were able to make it because they found community with one another. They seem to get to the point where they know they may not be "normal" but they understand that they are better than normal because they face life's challenges by sticking together, being their weird and wonderful selves and doing the hard work of living a concious life.
Blackburn has an incredible gift for placing you right there in the story. At moments I got little chills. There were suspenseful scenes that kept me reading when I should've really gone to bed already. Her ability to point out the absurdities of life cracked me up. And as the journey was coming to a close and the pages dwindled, I was able to really feel the sadness of the main characters as the story was coming to a close.
I would recommend this book not only for those in "the tribe" of 12-Steppers but for anyone who has had to deal with issues related to life changes like leaving home, having close friends get sick and die and all the craziness of relationships from tempting flirtations to just realizing it's time to end a relationship. I suspect everyone could relate to something in this book.
This year's 'must read' book at the Twelve Step Shop........2006-05-18
When a customer asks me 'What book would you recommend?', I ask them at least 20 questions before I even hazard a guess. Then I suggest a book that I feel most relates to their particular situation.
Gleefully, Beachglass is a book I can recommend with reckless abandon to anyone who walks into my store. ANYONE who reads this capitaving tale will be entertained and indeed educated about the recovery side of the deadly diseases of alcoholism and addiction.
I loved this book!

There are strange goings-on at the Opera House in Ankh-Morpork. A ghost in a white mask is murdering, well, quite a lot of people, and two witches (it really isn't wise to call them "meddling, interfering old baggages"), or perhaps three, take a hand in unraveling the mystery. Fans of the popular Discworld will be happy to see some old friends again in Maskerade, the 18th novel in the series. --Blaise Selby
Book Description
The Ghost in the bone-white mask who haunts the Ankh-Morpork Opera House was always considered a benign presence -- some would even say lucky -- until he started killing people. The sudden rash of bizarre backstage deaths now threatens to mar the operatic debut of country girl Perdita X. (nee Agnes) Nitt, she of the ample body and ampler voice.
Perdita's expected to hide in the chorus and sing arias out loud while a more petitely presentable soprano mouths the notes. But at least it's an escape from scheming Nanny Ogg and old Granny Weatherwax back home, who want her to join their witchy ranks.
Once Granny sets her mind on something, however, it's difficult -- and often hazardous -- to dissuade her. And no opera-prowling phantom fiend is going to keep a pair of determined hags down on the farm after they've seen Ankh-Morpork.
Customer Reviews:
Maskerading as..........2007-08-02
Terry Pratchett's satirical eye doesn't spare anybody or anything, and in his nineteenth Discworld book "Maskerade," it's opera's turn to suffer. In his typically barbed prose, he gleefully spoofs the "Phantom of the Opera," lampoons opera in general, and takes the opportunity to take everyone's favorite witches out to Ankh-Morpork.
Magrat Garlick is newly married and crowned. As a result, Granny Weatherwax is moody and bored, while Nanny pens an erotic cookbook -- and when it turns out that she's being cheated of royalties, Granny decides to go to Ankh-Morpork and confront her publisher. Meanwhile, the primary witch-maiden candidate, Agnes Nitt, has also gone to Ankh-Morpork to become an opera singer.
But the opera isn't all it's cracked up to be -- Agnes finds herself providing the voice for pretty, airheaded Christine, and the opera ghost is causing some major disasters. Granny and Nanny immerse themselves in the backstage -- and onstage -- drama of the opera, trying to figure out who the Phantom is... and why he's a friend one minute and a foe the next.
It's obvious that the opera holds no awe for Pratchett. Sure, the novel is a spoof of Gaston Leroux's novel, but Pratchett's real intention here is to constantly make fun of the opera, both as entertainment and art form. The entire climax of the book is devoted to making fun of opera's illogic, lack of acting, and such time-honored traditions as a dying person flawlessly singing for about fifteen minutes before expiring.
But it's not all opera spoofery. Despite some grisly deaths and the psycho Phantom (who sends notes filled with maniacal laughter), getting the witches out of Lancre gives the whole story a light, fun feel. It has some darker scenes, such as Granny playing cards with Death for a baby's life, but most of it is dedicated to the witches doing the sort of weird things they'd never do at home (impersonating duchesses, for one).
Pratchett sprinkles the storyline with hilarious dialogue, wacky situations (Nanny Ogg moonlights as the world's fattest ballerina), and some swashbuckling. And he includes a small message as well, about being the sort of person we actually want to be -- and how "masks" on the outside can change us.
Agnes Nitt has a lot of pagetime, but she seems rather fussy and pallid next to Granny and Nanny -- we get to see just how strong their friendship really is, despite their bickering. Granny shines especially, courtesy of a shopping spree, some coach rides and some dodgy darkish magic. And we have a wide array of timid janitors, annoying managers and airheaded sopranos to round out the cast.
"Maskerade" is a gleeful, glorious spoof of opera in general, and a fun outing for the Lancre witches. Definitely a solid entry for Pratchett.
Paper Faces On Parade.......2007-04-30
The DISCWORLD novels of Terry Pratchett are perhaps at their best when they are parodies of stories and events from real life. While Pratchett has a definite knack for humor and his fantasy stories are always funny, the original stories seem to get too bogged down in absurdity. Pratchett is much more clever and precise when he is skewing a classic tale with his own unique take on things, and such is the case with "Maskerade", a laugh-out-loud funny parody of "Phantom of the Opera".
Discworld's favorite witches, Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax, find themselves alone, in dire need of a third witch (if only to form a coven and prevent further arguments). The perfect candidate, Agnes Nitt, has just run off to Ankh-Morpork to join the opera; she is of impressive build, with a voice that can sing harmony with itself, but has entered the field at a time when it isn't the fat lady people want to see singing. Agnes, in a desperate attempt to outrun her destiny, tries to disguise herself and her wonderful personality with the name Perdita, only to find herself as the singing voice to an untalented wisp of a girl, who just happens to have 'star power'. It isn't long before Agnes learns of the ghost who haunts the opera house, and soon dead bodies start appearing that causes the new owner to want to shut the whole thing down. But the show must go on; it is opera, after all.
"Maskerade" is a spot-on parody of the beloved story/musical "Phantom of the Opera". Pratchett's interpretations of the song lyrics is priceless, as is the ridiculous nature of superstitions that accompany the opera world. And even though I am a fan of "Phantom", I found myself laughing along at Prachett's twisting of the tale, and other famous shows along the way.
My introduction to Diskworld - I was very satisfied.......2006-07-09
I had heard that Pratchett was an excellent author, but he just had so many books I did not know where to start. I saw this one, and since I enjoy musicals (especially Phantom) I decided to pick this one up.
I was very impressed with the telling of the story. Unlike most comedies and humorous stories, Pratchett also focuses on advancement of plot. The story is very interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the novel.
The characters? One word: MARVELOUS! Also, I knew that this was not the first Diskworld book to be written with the main characters of this book (Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg). I did not feel like I missed out for not reading others - and after a few short paragraphs, I knew the characters very well.
Overall, this book is an excellent read for anyone. But be warned!! After reading this book I went right out to the bookstore and picked up another two Diskworld books!!
ahh discworld, my favorite escape..........2006-03-04
the wyrd sisters get me everytime. i think it's becuase they remind me of my family, only much funnier.
Pratchett is Just Fun.......2006-02-24
I am slowly working my way through his bibliography, and while there are ups and downs, Pratchett always entertains. This is one of the ups, but they are all fun. I have been reading them in order of publication, but it's not a requirement for enjoyment. It does help, however, with the growth and development of the Usual Suspects that inhabit the Discworld. Read other reviewers for plot summations, but if you want encouragement to read this, or any other Terry Pratchett book, consider yourself so encouraged.

Book Description
The Opera House, Ankh-Morpork: a huge rambling building, where innocent young sopranos are lured to their destiny by a strangely familiar evil mastermind in a hideously deformed evening dress. But Granny Weatherwax is in the audience, and she doesn’t hold with that sort of thing. So there’s going to be trouble (but nevertheless a good evening’s entertainment with murders you can really hum.)

Abridged Edition.......2006-08-08
All Corgi Audio books are abridged editions, with Terry Pratchett being read by Tony Robinson.
One of Pratchett's funniest works........2005-12-06
Maskerade is a take on the Gaston Leroux story `Phantom of the Opera'. In the opera house of Ankh-Morpork dastardly deeds are afoot. Christine, the blonde Prima Donna who cannot sing, is being `courted' and taught by the opera ghost. What he doesn't realise is the real star is really one Agnes Nitt, (also known as Perdita X). She is the voice that Christine mimes to. Agnes's talent includes being able to sing in thirds with herself...she also, unbeknown to herself, has a talent for witchcraft.
Lancres famous witches, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are on the hunt for a third witch for their coven since Magrat Garlick very inconsiderately left them to marry the King. After all, everyone knows there has to be three witches...two just won't do. So, Granny and Nanny take a trip to Ankh-Morpork for a night at the opera and to press gang Agnes back to Lancre. In true Terry Pratchett style, mayhem and madness follow. Death makes his appearance as does the Death of Rats, and Greebo, Nanny's evil but hilarious cat will have you rolling on the floor laughing.
This audio book is an abridged version of Maskerade, but has been so skilfully edited that it seems complete. Having read the book I can say I didn't notice any obvious omissions. Tony Robinson (best known as Baldrick in Blackadder) was a perfect choice to narrate this book; he injects the right amount of humour and his `voices' for each character are spot on. This is a truly funny tale and well worth every penny.

Cheese Making.......2007-09-27
This is an interesting book. It has many recipes and some are more helpful than others. All-in-all there is a lot of information and it is very useful. Having taken courses from several cheesemakers, it is nice to get another perspective. However I would note that some information might be hard to follow for someone unfamiliar with the process.
Great Book for Cheese Making.......2007-05-14
This book has many great recipes for delicious cheeses you can make yourself. I found the instructions to be quite clear however it is better suited for someone who already has at least some experience with making cheese. This is a great addition to anyone's cheese making library and I highly recommend it.
Good for Intermediate Home Cheese Makers.......2007-05-02
I like this book because it has several recipes that are NOT included in Carroll's book (the bible of home cheese making), and lots of really nice pictures, both hand drawn and photographs. That said, I would go with Carroll's book if you're just starting out, as it has more detailed step by step information on the process of making cheese. But once you've mastered those basics, this is a great book for expanding your recipe collection.

Excellent Book on Vizsla's.......2007-01-11
This is an excellent book with so much information on Vizsla's. It is practical and will help you better understand this breed and how they work and think. I would recommend it to any new owner or anyone interested in learning the right way to care for, train and enjoy this wonderful dog breed.
Very informative.......2007-01-09
This book was right on target with my new Vizsla puppy. It has tons of information, including breed history, AKC standard, growth guidelines, etc. I gave this book 4 stars because it included pictures, but they weren't in color. I feel that for the price, they could've included a few color pictures. This book really sums up the breed very well. I would recommend it to any new Vizsla owner!

THE FIRST IS NEVER THE BEST.......2002-12-05
Jacobs must be given credit for producing the very first priceguide on homefront collecting. And Jacobs has assembled photographs of some fairly uncommon items from his pool of experienced contributors. But thats where the kudos end. It is mostly all B&W with just a few color. The organization makes it almost impossible to identify an item that does not have a picture. He lists two different prices for the same item on different pages. His coverage of the homefront area is poor. He wastes several pages on listing gum cards while completely failing in the areas like anti-axis where covers, cinderellas and postcards are just about all that is listed missing ceramics, toys etc in that subcategory. He has a slug of jewelry photos that someone obviously spent a great deal of time shooting but they are all in B&W completely subduing that contribution. And his prices are plain and simply not credible especially when compared to his V For Victory book which has many of the same items but radically different prices without explanation. Overall I'd say buy it just for the pics but throw out the price guide part. Its a woefully error ridden text. An obvious rush job. I give it two stars for being the first.

Not that new or helpful.......2001-05-15
The information isn't current (one place I checked was not in business anymore). A disappointment.
Wonderful For Some, Not So For Me.......2000-06-25
The problem I have with the books that Victoria Magazine publishes (and I own a few now) is that they are often a well-done rehash of what has already been printed (text & photos) in their monthly magazine. Don't get me wrong, I adore Victoria Magazine and have subscribed for years and enjoy most issues. Books like The Passionate Shopper are great for someone who doesn't read the magazine because then the content is new and fresh and wonderful. But if you are a regular reader, it's often stuff you've already seen in a pretty new hard cover and you'll feel cheated, like I did.
Save yourself time. Go to the top sources........2000-04-04
I picked this book up thinking I'd just browse through it, and after 40 pages decided it was such a great resource I wanted it for my library. It has the best sources for each of the specific sections that I've seen to date. If you're a reader of the numerous decorating magazines available, you're recognize some of the names, but there are many others I've never seen before. The book is divided into categories, so if you're looking for accessories, vintage tableware, pottery, blown glass, Meissen, fabrics, restoration of period frames and the like, this is the book for you! Victoria Magazine has covered all markets very well. You can save yourself a lot of time by using the sources in this well thought out book.

Jewish Holiday Origami.......2006-10-13
This slim paperback volume includes instructions for 24 Jewish origami projects, along with a black and white photograph and a brief explanation of each project's historical and spiritual significance. The introduction provides basic information about origami and explains how Judaism can be expressed through this ancient paper folding art. The table of contents lists the projects by level (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and by Jewish holiday (Sabbath, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Purim, Passover, and Shavuot). While not nearly as attractive as Florence Temko's Jewish Origami, Jewish Origami II and Bible Origami, which include full-color photographs and diagrams as well as origami paper, Stern's edition is more comprehensive and content-rich - a worthwhile addition for libraries that collect Jewish craft books. The three dimensional pyramid may be one of the best 11-fold pyramids ever created! And with a few more creases, it is transformed into a Purim pastry! All in all, Stern's designs are a pleasure to fold. Clever maneuvers abound and a crease here and repeated crease there often yield hidden surprises and delights. Many of the models like the wine glass, pastry/tart, pyramid, candles, human figures with display stand, book, frog, goat face and meat bone can be folded and enjoyed all year round, adding to their versatility and timelessness. Models in "Jewish Holiday Origami" are conveniently indexed by experience level (beginner, intermediate and advanced) and by holiday (Sabbath, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Purim, Passover and Shavuot).
Paperfolding for Purim, Passover and more!.......2006-04-29
What a great idea, superbly executed! By following Stern's simple steps, enhanced with 'this is how it should look' photos, one can decorate and learn about the Jewish holidays. I'm looking forward to putting the Four Sons on the Seder table according to who's who. There is even 'Two Zuzim." Each origami object is rated according to difficulty so that the 'craftsman' does not immeditely get frustrated by starting with the more difficult ones.
Here is a craft item that adds fun to the teaching of the Holidays. Each origami object is accompanied by a simple but complete explanation of the meaning of the holiday and the object's place in it. Some of the objects even have movable parts, like the Torah and dreidel.
The book itself is a perfect gift. I'm looking forward to teaching my grandchildren about the Holidays while having fun folding paper.

Book Description
In 1958, a few weeks after their marriage, Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested one night in their Virginia bedroom for the crime of interracial marriage. Sentenced to one year in jail, the couple was told the sentence would be suspended if they left the state and did not return for twenty-five years. The Lovings moved, but in 1963 they went back to court to challenge the Virginia mis-cegenation law. Four years later, in 1967, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the law was unconstitutional, thus out-lawing miscegenation laws in Virginia and fifteen other states. In this sweeping and often harrowing history, Peter Wallenstein explores how miscegenation laws were closely linked to attitudes toward race throughout American history.

Good Jumping Point for Research.......2007-03-09
Take time to google some of the people in this book and you see another whole layer unfold in this story. I enjoyed the life they lived of honor and dignity. I didn't read about them hating family or neighbors but of working hard to bring dignity to what they had created. Amazing how the opinions of people depending on what society is facing can change so quickly.

Excellent look back at the outlawing of interracial marriage.......2004-03-19
With the debate over gay marriage impacting the presidential race, Peter Wallenstein provides a timely history lesson focusing on the previous matrimony taboo: interracial marriage. In 1958, a Virginia couple was arrested for violating state law on interracial marriage. In 1967, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the law was unconstitutional, thus outlawing miscegenation laws some as old as three centuries. Mr. Wallenstein points out that the laws on interracial marriage tied very closely to social attitudes on race throughout the nation's history and in many cases back to colonial times
He eloquently and interestingly points out the history of interracial couples and miscegenation laws. The author makes the case that the more you allow the state to dictate about adults, the more everyone loses. Imagine what that means with an amendment. TELL THE COURT I LOVE MY WIFE: RACE, MARRIAGE, AND LAW - AN AMERICAN HISTORY is a well written, thought provoking, and perfectly timed look back at a black eye on the nation's heritage. Readers who see the dots connected to the current debate will want to read Jonathan Rauch's strong dissertation in support of GAY MARRIAGE.
